There is only one-way to describe the riding weather we’ve experienced in Ohio over the last month and that is Hot, Hot, Hot!! Weather conditions can make all the difference in enjoying a motorcycle ride or not. Certainly cold temperatures and/or rain can keep us from hopping on our bikes. It isn’t often that Ohio riders keep them parked because of extreme heat, but such has been the case this summer. Recently one of my non-riding friends commented, “How can they stand to wear all that in this heat?” when she witnessed a biker in full riding gear. That rider knew what many of us have found out while riding through the deserts out West. The best way to cool yourself in scorching temperatures and avoid heat exhaustion is to dowse your cotton shirt with water and zip up your jacket on top of it. Your closed jacket will keep your shirt wet longer. When riding in very hot weather, routes that include many stoplights should be avoided as well. Not only will the engine get hot very quickly (air or water-cooled engines will both suffer), but also the heat from both the road and the engine will rise to make the rider very hot! If you should get stuck in backed up traffic unexpectedly, it is best to switch off the engine if you are likely to be there for any appreciable length of time. This is particularly important for air-cooled bikes. If any of our readers happened to pick up a tattered copy of the July issue of Thunder Roads Ohio, there is an explanation behind that. It is actual road rash! Last month, I headed up to the printing company in St. Joseph Michigan to pick up the remaining couple of pallets of magazines that were not direct shipped to our distribution points. On my way back as I was exiting off of the turnpike onto Route 53 near Fremont, Ohio the top two layers came loose from the shrink wrap and flew off the truck! Quite a few of the boxes broke open scattering the magazines all over the exit ramp! It was one of those extremely hot days, and I was pretty discouraged picking them up while dodging traffic. But my luck turned around when a couple pulled over to help me. When they realized they were Thunder Roads Ohio magazines, the man said, “Hey, I get this magazine!” and we laughed about his “special delivery” of that issue. Their kind gesture in stopping to help once again proved to me what great people bikers are! In a couple of weeks I’ll be heading west to Sturgis along with some of the Thunder Roads Ohio staff. If you are planning on going and haven’t made your camping reservations yet, check out the ads for Glencoe Camp Resort on page 5, and Broken Spoke Campground on page 9. And while you are out there make sure to pop in Full Throttle Saloon to see what Jesse James Dupree is up to this year. Jesse is the lead singer in Jackyl and is partners with Michael Ballard in the Full Throttle Saloon. Jesse was in Ohio for Bike Week and is pictured with me above. If you follow the Full Throttle Series on TruTV you know that Jesse is always coming up with some crazy stunt to the chagrin of Michael. We received a lot of positive feedback on our monthly Custom Bike Build features. This month we take it one step further to showcase bikes of our Thunder Roads Ohio readers. You can find our first batch of featured bikes in our “Readers Rides” feature on page 40-42. August brings another month jam-packed with events all over the state of Ohio. If you’re looking for a riding destination check out the events listing on page 92-94. One event you won’t want to miss is the ABATE of Ohio Bike Giveaway held at Margaritaville in Sandusky on August 25th. There will be live entertainment on the deck throughout the day. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) Poker Run will also end up there on the same day, with the top hand taking home a new motorcycle! See the article on page 26 about how having a child with Juvenile Diabetes affects family life. Until then, ride safe and stay cool!

The Iron Cowboy It’s the height of the riding season and it seems as though our “dance card” is always full! Whether it’s a bike night in Dayton, a rally in Van Wert, a charity ride in Columbus, or a show in Warren JACKASS FLATS – there’s ALWAYS something going on. That’s a good thing, though! I love my job and hitting the road is one of my favorite things to do! It’s especially satisfying when I reflect on all the great folks that I’ve met along the way. While the open road is an exciting lure, it’s the camaraderie amongst kindred spirits that really completes the lifestyle. When you meet someone along the road – whether it’s at Snuffy’s Reloaded in Bradner or Frog Town in Ironton – there is a synergy amongst bikers. That’s the real appeal – and payoff. The biker community is a tight knit family that is built through respect and taking care of each other. We have each other’s back when the chips are down and we are amongst the first to slap each other on the back and make a toast when things are good. But unlike many “tight knit” groups – we’re always open to help a stranger or extend a hand. I’ve shared countless stories about folks stopping to offer a jacket or shelter when I’ve pulled over during a storm – or the folks we’ve helped with gas or assistance when they’ve become stranded. We look out for each other. That’s what being a part of this family is all about – the biker community. With the support of the motorcycle community, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting thousands of Ohio riders since the launch of this magazine. Thunder Road has allowed us to become prominent members of our fellowship and often times we become spokesmen for it. As such, I feel that we have a certain responsibility to you as Ohio riders – and as readers of this magazine. I’m writing this to recognize this and encourage you to hold us responsible for this.

The sponsors are a key part of this whole equation as they are the ones that make it all possible. They cover our costs and allow us to serve you. They are in fact the backbone of the network that we are creating.
Along these lines, our primary focus the next several months will be to continue to develop our network of Road Reps and Contributors. Many of you have already contacted us in this regard. Frankly, we’ve received far more inquiries then we’ve been able to respond to. Simply put, we’ve been too busy to take everyone up on their offers to help! So we are making this a primary objective for us as we head towards the fall. Working with key partners, we will begin hosting meetings around the state for those interested in becoming Contributors or Road Reps. ride on your own ride Not long ago I overheard a conversation some riders were having. The conversation was about “Riding your own Ride.” One rider insisted that riding your own ride meant that you should only ride your own bike, because that’s the bike your familiar with and its not safe to ride a bike your not used to. While there’s some truth to that its an easy fix by spending a few minutes in a parking lot to get used to where the clutch engages, the weight of the bike, how it handles in turns, how its brakes feel etc. Riding your own ride is more about riding within your own skill limits and not trying to match other riders skills. This comes into play a lot during group rides. Newer riders, with skills still developing, may try to keep up with more skilled riders and can get in over their heads. The new rider, or a rider with less skills, may try to corner to fast to keep up with the other riders and get in trouble. This scenario is all to common. Or, they get into a zone where they just follow the tail light ahead of them. Very dangerous.
this over the 4th of July holiday while riding home from Traverse City Mi. I was cutting across Michigan on 115 heading toward Clare. It’s a nice 2 lane country road. For miles I was following a car with very little traffic. Every once in a while there would be a slower vehicle to pass. Yes, the car and I were traveling at an adult pace. After some time there was an old pick up truck going real slow up ahead. I was a good 10-12 seconds behind the car in front of me. The car passed the truck and I was beginning my pass when the truck started to turn left into a driveway. Seeing me coming the truck then stopped mid way in his turn. That required a quick stop on my part, coming to a stop about 5 feet behind the truck. It was early morning with the glare of the sun in my eyes, and to make matters worse the pick-up’s brake lights and turn signal was very dim. Also, I got into a pattern of following this car for miles, and I got into riding the cars ride instead of my own ride. After, I mentally slapped myself a few times I continued on with a great ride home, Riding my own Ride.

When riding in a group you should keep scanning the riding environment and searching ahead for problems that need attention. Search for problems as you would if you were riding alone. Look well ahead for road or traffic hazards. Ride your won ride also pertains to when your riding alone. I experienced

Currently our state government officials are on break. They are making public appearances in their hometowns and gearing up for the elections coming up in November. Now is a good time to meet your officials, introduce yourself to them, and talk about whatever issues are on your mind. It is also a good time to get them to complete the Voter’s Guide Survey. We only have one more month to get those turned in. This survey will be a good way for the candidates to get their names out, not only to their constituents, but across the state. It helps us because we know who stands where on our issues. Please take the time to help with this process. Remember the completed surveys need to be attached to an email and forwarded to votersguide@abate.com. I believe that there are still a lot of traffic signals out there that will not activate with a motorcycle. Making a bigger effort to get these fixed gains us not only less aggravations on the road, but also gains us the respect of our legislators, government agencies like the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and the Ohio Department of Transportation. What this all comes down to is an increase in the respect level of the government for bikers in general. Let’s make the effort to help ourselves and possibly get more efforts to help us on things we need. Report these to legislativedirector@abate. com and I will do the follow up needed to get them fixed. Don’t forget about the call to action on the handlebar bill, H.B. 316. This bill was passed through the House Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security. We now need to have it brought to discussion for the General Assembly. The Speaker of the House is Rep. I
know, I promised two letters ago, that I wouldn’t send any more mountain pictures. But this is the Canadian Rockies!
The Icefields Parkway (Canada Route 93) runs 143 miles between Jasper and Lake Louise, and then on to Banff, Canada through Jasper National Park and Banff National Park. Bow Summit, the highest point, is 6,785 feet. It also passes through the Columbia Icefield and the Athabasca Glacier, the largest glacier that can be seen from the parkway. You’ll see in the pictures what looks like a highway overpass, but it is actually a passageway for critters. They’ve built six of these in a distance of thirty-five miles. This particular one was brand new, and they will plant trees and shrubs to trick the migrating animals into thinking it’s a natural bridge, keeping them from slaughter on the new four-lane highway. Also pictured are the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louis, and The Fairmont Banff Springs. They were built by the Canadian Pacific Railway, with the same idea in mind as the four lodges I visited earlier in my trip near Glacier National Park. They are both impressive and extremely elegant, designed to draw people 16

west to see the spectacular mountains, the Canadian Rockies and the Continental Divide. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louis was constructed in 1890. Additions completed in 2004 brought the total rooms to 550, and included a 200 seat dining room and an 8,800 square foot ballroom. The dining room overlooks a fantastic view of Lake Louise and Victoria Glacier. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

The Fairmont Banff Springs opened in 1888 and was fashioned after a Scottish Baronial Castle. It has 9 floors and 770 guest rooms, perhaps even more impressive than Chateau Lake Louise with a view of the awesome Rockies. The distance between Jasper and Banff is 175 miles. My plan was to spend one night in each town. There are over 14 hostels between those two points, but there were no vacancies as I was traveling through during the high season and a Canadian holiday weekend. I checked online and found the least expensive hotel listed at $179. This left me with two options. Either tent camp or wait until later in the evening and try to find Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
a local pub and turn on my charming personality. I rode 30 miles to Canmore, the next town east of Banff, where I found tent camping available for $25. Fortunately I spotted a sign for a hostel just down the street. The Hostel Bear sleeps 170 guests and has 9 private rooms. Most hostels forbid alcohol but this one has its own bar. It also features a lounge and game room with a cathedral ceiling, 2 fireplaces and a huge kitchen. Rent was only $30 per night, so I was sold! The town of Canmore was named in honor of King Malcom of Scotland. His Gaelic name “Ceannmor” translates to “Big 17
Head” referring to one’s large stature. There is a giant head statue sporting a bandana sitting on the corner of Main Street. It struck me that it looks hilarious sitting there by itself with no explanation. It was time for an oil change so I rode into Calgary for supplies. I stopped in at the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics. They still use the 7 ski jumps built for the games year round, skiing off of wet astro turf in the summer. The skating area is still active and you can ride the bobsled and luge for a price. Next stop was the small town of Nanton where a dedicated few of the 1,700 residents restored a four engine WWII

Lancaster bomber. It is on display at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada. One significant fact of this plane is that it was the only one capable of carrying the “Tallboy” bomb. This unique bomb weighed 12,000 pounds and was capable of penetrating up to 60 feet into the ground or through the thick concrete sheltering the German submarine pens. Passing through the town of Bow Island I completed a U-turn to investigate a large sculpture next to the visitor’s center. I was greeted by an 18 foot high statue of the town mascot, “Pinto MacBean”. This area is the heartland of the dried bean industry.

Once you are away from the Canadian Rockies, Alberta resembles Ohio with fields of grain, plenty of silos, grain elevators and smatterings of free range cattle. The terrain is flat with agriculture being its main industry. While riding across the Trans Canada Highway I was surprised to see that the farmers are permitted to harvest and bale the grass in the median and along the edges of the highway. I noticed a sign that read “Snakes Are At Risk! Watch For Snakes On The Highway Next 67 Kilometers”. Further down the road another sign warned “Watch For Rattle Snakes”. Believe me, I did keep an eye out for them.

I spent the night in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Its claim to fame is the “World’s Tallest Tepee”. It is 215 feet tall with a diameter of 160 feet. It was originally built for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and moved here in 1991. It felt “Mystical” as I stood under the center of it.

Motorcycle Rain Gear is a Necessity, Not a Luxury By Jeff Criley, TRO Contributor We’ve all been there. That day when the weather man says the chance of rain is twenty to thirty percent and we are planning a ride. Our friends are meeting us in thirty minutes and we have a big day planned. Many times we will go about our travels, have an awesome day, and the seventy to eighty percent chance that it won’t rain allows us to escape. But on occasion our luck runs out. We can’t come out on top every time, and inevitably we will get caught in a shower. So, we must be prepared and equip ourselves with some quality rain gear. There are several things that everyone should have in their saddle bags to be fully prepared. Today we will discuss a few of them.

Rain Suit- Rain suits are available in two styles. The most popular is the two piece suit, consisting of a pair of rain pants and a rain jacket. The pants will have an elastic waist for comfort.

These are designed to be pulled over top of your existing clothing, so while you don’t want an extremely loose fit, you do want a comfortable fit. The pants will also have a Velcro strip at the bottom of the leg to ensure that you have a snug fit and seal. Along with the rain pants there will be a rain jacket as well. Some jackets will have a hood, some will not. This is personal preference, but if you are in the rain for a prolonged period of time the hood will assist in keeping the rain from getting in around the back of your neck and soaking your back. Like the pants, the rain jacket needs to fit comfortably, but not too loose. This will also be worn over top of your jacket in most applications. In addition to the two piece rain suits, there are also one piece suits available. Both will offer the needed protection from the elements. Waterproof Boot Covers- Along with the rain suit, you will be much more comfortable if you have a pair of waterproof boot covers. The waterproof boot covers slip on over top of your motorcycle boots and provide a great barrier from the moisture. It is best to put the waterproof boot covers on prior to stepping into your rain pants. This will allow the pants to overlap the boot covers and prevent the water from seeping in around the top. An alternative to the waterproof boot covers would be a layer of beeswax or another form of waterproofing on your motorcycle boots, but I do recommend the waterproof boot covers as they will offer protection for a longer period of time.
Face Shield/Goggles- It is always vital that we are able to see clearly. While it is very important to wear eye protection at all times, the level of need is greatly increased while riding in the rain. Regardless of whether you wear a half helmet, or a full face helmet, the use of a face shield is an added benefit while riding in rain. Glasses and goggles will serve their purpose, but you may have to deal with the aggravation of them getting fogged up. There are products available to help prevent this, but with a face shield this will be less of an issue. Your vision will be greatly increased as you ride with a face shield as well. With most adventures, our level of success is determined by how we prepare. With life in general, we must set ourselves up for success. By planning ahead and making sure we are ready for the various things that might come our way, we will undoubtedly have a much higher success rate. So whether it is a one piece or two piece rain suit, waterproof boot covers or beeswax, a face shield or goggles, make sure that your saddle bag has the necessary equipment to provide safety and comfort during in-climate weather. By doing so you will be able to confidently saddle up for that touring adventure, or that poker run with your friends knowing you are prepared for almost anything that comes your way. RYAN’S STORY A Family Living with Juvenile Diabetes As told to Julie Roeder by Mary Brown Grieger My son Ryan was six when he started having certain difficulties, and he just didn’t look like he felt well. As a nurse, I knew that those were signs and symptoms of diabetes. The average parent would not know that. I worked with a lot of Type 2 diabetics, typically the overweight adult that has to take pills in order to make their insulin work in their body.
A
couple of years ago I was approached by Dennis Peters who was working for Friendship Food Stores at the time. He wanted my input on a Poker Run he was organizing to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF). FriendShip Food Stores, a chain of 21 convenience stores located throughout north central Ohio, had been a major sponsor of the JDRF Walkathon for numerous years and they were looking for a way to raise additional funds. Dennis is an avid motorcycle enthusiast and was very familiar with the generosity of the biker community. Working alongside the North Coast Walk to Cure Diabetes Chairperson Mary Brown Grieger, they pulled off a very successful Poker Run in 2010 with the top hand being a brand new Harley-Davidson Sportster. Dennis has since moved on from FriendShip, but still participates in the event which continues under the capable hands of Kevin Campbell. The last two years, the Poker Run was held in September on the same weekend as the JDRF Walkathon, ending up at East Harbor State Park in Marblehead, Ohio. Kevin came to me earlier this year and requested my help in choosing an earlier date for the Poker Run and to find a new venue to host the event. The event, now in its third year, will be held on Saturday August 25th beginning and ending at Margaritaville in Sandusky. With the support of FriendShip’s vendors, including major donations by Miller Lite and Pepsi, the prize list for this Poker Run is unmatched in this area. While working with Kevin and Mary on this year’s event, I discovered that the reason for Mary’s involvement in fundraising for this cause over the last ten years. Her son Ryan, now 23 years of age, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of six. Mary shared with me Ryan’s journey living with diabetes and how it has affected their family. 26
My mother had a meter, so I used that to check his sugar. A normal sugar level should be about 100, and Ryan’s read 350, so I knew that this was a problem and I took him to see our family doctor the very next day. Dr. Steve Jackson knew immediately what was going on. He told Ryan that he would have to go to Cleveland in the morning, as there was no one in our area that could take care of a child with diabetes. If you are a type 1 diabetic, your body no longer makes insulin. Your pancreas has a lot of different functions. The most important function of the pancreas is to make insulin. Insulin helps convert the sugar that we eat to be used in our muscle for daily functions. Type 2 diabetics have to take a pill to make that insulin work. This pill takes the weak insulin and strengthens it to make it work in their bodies, and they can continue to function. When your body does not produce insulin, your sugar builds up, sometimes over a very short period of time. Type 1 Diabetes falls into the category of auto immune diseases. Other diseases in the category include Rheumatoid Arthritis that affects your joints, Chron’s disease that affects your colon, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) that affects your brain, and ALS (Lou Gerhigs Disease) that attacks your muscles. Type 1 Diabetes is generally discovered in younger children, but sometimes someone as old as thirty and a few forty year olds are diagnosed. Two years ago I worked with a family where their little girl was just 18 months old. She could hardly communicate with us and they had to poke her and inject her. Those are the cases that really bother me. Since Ryan was 6 when he was diagnosed, he was able to be a little more rational. He was always asking me, Mom can I have a cookie? Mom can I have this snack? Mom can I have this or that? We were able to control what he ate because he was still asking us for things. It is harder for a child who is 10, 12, or 14 years of age, who has already been extremely independent. When they are diagnosed with diabetes, they are upset because life has to be really different. My heart goes out to these young children when people give them funny looks while out in a restaurant, or when the other kids at school bully them or try and pull on the pump because they think it’s a beeper. kids. But for the most part most children affected by Juvenile Diabetes will just take it and roll with it.
shots all the time, they might have one big shot every three days to put the set in to make the insulin pump work.
Type 1 diabetics must have insulin injected into their bodies, either in a shot or a through a pump. The pump, which most people are wearing now, continuously gives their body insulin. When we are contemplating eating, our body is already starting to secrete insulin in preparation. It doesn’t know how much, but that is normally what our bodies do. A person that has Type 1 diabetes who has to inject insulin must plan for what they are eating because they have to think for their pancreas.
Through all of the supportive research, JDRF has consistently been the top charitable contributor to find a cure and eliminate the disease or to lessen the complications. They give 85 cents of every dollar raised directly to finding the cure. They have partnered with the National Institutes of Health, meeting with Congress frequently to lobby for additional funds to help find a cure.
This can prove difficult if you have a six year old child. You wonder, are they going to eat everything? Are they going to push their food away? You don’t know so you have to be prepared for that. Many times parents with younger children will give the insulin after the fact because they can’t anticipate what they are going to eat. Type 1 diabetics must test their sugar level frequently because it can bottom out very quickly. It saddens me to think of the young children affected by this disease that are poking their fingers, and giving themselves insulin, multiple times a day.

JDRF has been around since 1970, started by a group of parents that said “We’ve got to find a reason why this is happening.” We don’t know any more reason why Type 1 Diabetes hits someone, or Rheumatoid Arthritis hits some people, and or MS hits somebody else. But we do know that sometimes there are certain genetic traits exist. There has also been research which a viral illness will trigger it. That is what we figure happened with Ryan when he came down with a very bad case of the flu. When you get sick, no matter what kind of illness it is, your body builds up antibodies to that illness. Sometimes those antibodies are stupid and they attack the beta cells that make the insulin. We are all born with a certain amount of these beta cells. A few of them can die, but if a good portion of them die, then you become a Type 1 diabetic. It is those same beta cells that don’t work as well in the adult with Type 2 Diabetes who need to take the pill to make them work. When discussing diabetes in general, the average person typically will think of the overweight adult. They don’t think of a small child or the young adult that wears this beeper on their side that pumps their insulin. That pump is their lifeline, giving them their insulin a little bit every hour. They dial the pump up to give increase the insulin when they go to eat dinner or lunch, or a snack. JDRF is recognized as a reputable charity and is a very tightly run organization. They have surrounded themselves with the top researches in the country, many of which have Type 1 diabetic children. Their goal is to find the cure and make it happen for these children. If nothing else along the way, they have made advances to lessen the complications of the disease or to improve their lifestyle, such as the insulin pump. Although JDRF has been in existence for 42 years, because of the speed of research, this organization has probably made more progress in the last 15 years than the rest of the years combined. The awareness of there is heightened by celebrities with diabetes such as Nick Jonas, or Mary Tyler Moore or Halle Berry. They have been successful in lobbying for more research funds, because the more notable the person the more money gets earmarked. Such is the case with Michael J. Fox and Parkinsons Disease, which never got the publicity until he was affected by it. They are able to take their notoriety and a make a positive contribution. I am happy they can use their celebrity status to help the cause, but I am sorry that they have to deal with the affects of the disease. Ryan is now 23, and he has been on an insulin pump for 11 years. He has actually spent more of his life with diabetes than without. I find that most diabetics will look at their situation as the glass being half full instead of half empty. Ryan never let the disease stop him from doing his everyday things. There are many role models out there with diabetes including Nicole Johnson, 1999 Miss America, or Jay Cutler, starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears, and Ohio’s very own American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox. They are using their celebrity status as a platform to help push the message that if they can achieve their goals in life, so can every little kid out there wondering if they can ever grow up and do anything when they have diabetes. In fact, there were many heedless questions from the media when Sonya Sotomayor was first selected to serve on the Supreme Court, regarding whether her diabetes would stop her from functioning. Bowersox is now a National Spokesperson for Juvenile Diabetes. She grew up in the biker world as her dad Bill is a long-standing member of ABATE. I’ve heard that Crystal is very accommodating when she learns that kids affected by diabetes will be attending her concerts, arranging for special seating and backstage passes. Willie G. Davidson, grandson of one of the founders of Harley-Davidson Motor Company is also a diabetic. Willie recently retired from his long standing position as Vice-President of Styling at H-D. It was exciting when Willie G. was on 27
hand to help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Roeder HarleyDavidson in 2002. He also was Grand Marshall of the Ohio Bike Week parade that day. In preparation for his arrival, they were instructed that he would immediately have to be taken into a quiet location where he would need to be served specific foods because of his condition. When I had to give Ryan his very first insulin shot in the hospital, it was Ryan’s Dad who looked at me and said “We need to at least be grateful that there is a treatment.” Coming from someone who is nonmedical, I was very surprised. I was sitting there ready to give Ryan this insulin shot and I didn’t want to do it because I knew that once I started there was no going back. Throughout the years we continued to live with that philosophy because there is a treatment. It may not be a cure but there is a treatment. Insulin sustains their life but it is not a cure. JDRF has worked very hard with families like mine to reach out in the community and make a positive difference, giving them the support that they need including connecting them with other families that have similar age kids. They support numerous outreach programs including a babysitting network, because the families need extra help. They work with the schools, the insurance companies and the physicians, getting them the supplies they need. There are many different events held every year to help fund JDRF, appealing to a wide variety of lifestyles. I have personally been involved with the North Coast Walk to Cure Diabetes since the beginning. It all started when my family participated in a walk held in Toledo along with another local family, and we both said “wouldn’t it be a great thing to do this locally?” Families come from five different counties to walk in this event now in its tenth year. I’m encouraged when people say things like “I’m here today because my grandson has diabetes.” With the backing of FriendShip Food Stores, the Lions Club and Kiwanis Club, Moser Construction, East Harbor State Park, and Bassett’s Market, we have been able to raise $25,000 to $35,000 every year. This year walk will be held on Sunday Sept 16th at East Harbor State Park.
Sales of the Paper Shoes have increased ever year with the count so far this year reaching nearly $11,000. Words can’t express my gratitude for the support from the Beck family. JDRF is the only charity they support and they only hit their customers up one time a year. I’m very excited to get the biker family involved and about possibilities of what the Poker Run can do for JDRF. By putting on a well run event, and if God blesses us with good weather again, I’m sure the word will spread fast and it will continue to grow. I often think that as a family we’ve done the best we can with our son to be positive and to help him understand that this disease wouldn’t slow him down or change him in any way. And since he is no longer the cute little kid that I used to parade around at the fundraising events, I find new cute little kids to parade around each year. I know that there are many families that keep it in a tight little box, that don’t discuss it until someone brings it up. Ryan has always been acceptable to being in the forefront and will always be by my side to help me fight this cause. I know that because this charity does what they say, putting our money directly into research, that advances are being made such as the development of the pump. It was a byproduct of the research being done to try and find a cure. I firmly believe that a cure will be discovered in Ryan’s lifetime. With the advances made through research in recent years we cannot be that far away from it. JDRF is leading the charge to be put out of business. The ultimate goal is to eliminate Type 1 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes will always be around. There isn’t anything that says that Type 1 has to be.

The relationship with JDRF and FriendShip Food stores goes back quite a ways. As a family affected by diabetes we are encouraged to raise money in any way shape or form to take to the walk. I frequently patronize the FriendShip Stores, so I met with the owner Brian Beck, probably 12 or 13 years ago. I told him that my son has diabetes, this is my information, and then asked “Will you sell these paper shoes in your store?” That first year he agreed to sell the shoes in four or five stores
and he ended up writing a check JDRF for a couple of hundred bucks. Every year I went back requesting that he sell the shoes again and he obliged. Eleven years ago I went to him and said I wanted to do a walk and through their partnership we ended up raising $3,000 the first year.

The Family that Rides Together…
The Crist Family
We are the Crist family and we consider ourselves a motocross family. Our family consists of my husband, Jonny, Mikki (me), and our little 2 year old boy, Gunnar. We both grew up riding motorcycles and racing motocross around Ohio and on the national amateur circuit. As we continue to grow as a couple we have to find ways to keep time for the family as well as riding. Keeping that balance is important for us, and as Gunnar gets older we hope that he will learn to respect and love riding as much as we do. He is already a pro at gliding around on his little KTM Strider bike. Gunnar also already has a Suzuki JR 50 with training wheels. Gunnar has ridden his 50 a couple times in the back yard. We turn the throttle screw way in and we have a little leash behind the bike in case he gets going too fast. Both Jon and I started riding at a very young age. Jon’s first race was a motocross at Sunset Ramblers, and mine was at the Marion County Fair. We both grew up riding at Sunset Ramblers in Galion, Ohio. We met in 2008 at McCune Cycle World. I worked there as the parts girl. After a few dates, we were hooked. Jonny reminded me that we first met in about 2006 at a gas station. He asked me what track I was going to. I just blew him off because I locked my keys in the truck right before that and was in a bad mood! How would I have known we would be married 4 years later?

Well then we made a little monster baby. His first word was “MO-MO” for motorcycle. Now he’s 2, he says,” Mommy, Daddy, Mo-mo, and track”. CONSTANTLY. I think he was bred for motorcycles. Jonny and I were trying to have a baby for about 3 months. Then one day, RIGHT AFTER I RACED A HARESCRAMBLE, I found out I was pregnant. Gunnar will always be around dirt bikes, whether he’s playing with trucks doing his own thing, or riding his dirt bike. It

is what we love to do as a family. I forgot to mention that my dad also races motocross. He is 49 years old and still going strong. Gunnar not only gets to hang out with Mom and Dad at the track, he also hangs out with Grandpa! If I was to give any one advice on raising a child, it would be to get them into riding dirt bikes. It teaches them discipline, money saving skills, and confidence. We are definitely a Motocross family.

Tabasco Thunder Roads Ohio As I sit today to write my “Tabasco Report” I’m still pretty pissed off. You see last night I was heading home from a weekly Bike Night at one of our Sponsors of the magazine. I was rolling up a well traveled four lane divided highway in central Ohio at about 11:30 pm and traffic was light. As I peeled off from the group I gave a quick Peace Sign to my brothers who rolled on up the highway. I stopped at a double lane left turn only traffic light. I did my part. I waited until I got the green arrow and as I started to turn I noticed a lone vehicle approaching the intersection in the far left oncoming lane. I judged that at the speed he was coming, and the proximity to the intersection, he had no idea the light had changed. I pointed my head light toward him and just sat in the empty right oncoming lane and waited. About 30 yards from the intersection he saw my headlight and locked them up. Obviously he had no idea I was stopped and not actually turning. He made the stop 10 feet past the white line, but I’m convinced had I not waited and he saw my headlight, I probably wouldn’t be here to write this today. It was some damn kid on his cell phone! (I thought I covered that in July’s Tabasco Report?!) He met my alter ego “Hot Sauce” last night, and hopefully the one sided “intense fellowship” conversation that followed will stick in his mind for awhile and it will spare another bikers life in the future. On June 5th while many of us were enjoying our time at Ohio Bike Week, a good friend of mine almost lost her life. She rides under the road name “LLEGS” and she was rolling home from her job at a local dealership on her 2002 Road King. She was on a similar four lane divided highway. A van traveling on the opposite side of the highway decided he would do a U-Turn on a crossover drive in the median. The thing is he didn’t bother to stop when he whipped into her opposing lane. He only made it roughly six feet into her lane before she broadsided him. LLEGS died that day, at least for a few minutes to hear her tell it. “I saw the van and had like two seconds to react,” LLEGS recalled. “I remember locking up both brakes and aiming for the side of the van as not to hit him head on. My next recollection it was like I was standing outside my body. I could see the back of my vest and my head laying face down in my arm, and then I came to. They (Emergency Personnel) called for Life Flight, but decided it would take too long so they transported me by ambulance”. She 36

remembered feeling bad for the driver thinking how awful he must have felt. That was before the OSP told her that he was being charged with OMVI and Aggravated Vehicular Assault. I should mention the accident occurred at about 5:15 in the afternoon. LLEGS is lucky. She spent one night in ICU and 4 days in the hospital. She got twenty stitches in her face, broke two bones in her face, broke her wrist and fractured her third lumbar disk in her back. She’ll be down healing with no income for several months. Like I said, she was lucky. There are many of us that have been riding for decades, but with the surge in the popularity of riding, there are many more that are new to it. Might I make a few suggestions? Loud Pipes Save Lives. It’s not just a saying on a patch. I’ve seen many cages come up off a side street stop sign and start to roll on out into my path. I’m much faster on the brake, clutch and the throttle than I am finding that little horn button. I’ve tapped

the brake, pulled the clutch and cracked the pipes several times and gotten that head turn and that meek little wave acknowledging that they almost killed me. Watch their front tire as well. If they have stopped, but you see that front tire start to roll forward, be prepared to take evasive action. Watch the cagers head and see where they are looking. If it’s not at you, don’t assume they saw you. Stop lights don’t stop cars and turn signals don’t turn them either. Hover over your clutch and brake while entering an intersection with vehicles anywhere near it, and make sure that vehicle is actually making that turn before you pull off a side street. I lost a good friend in High School way too young because a dump truck wasn’t actually turning as its signal was indicating when she pulled out in front of it. Almost every year I attend a funeral for a Biker. It’s a risk we all take every time we mount up. Many accidents, such as LLEGS are just unavoidable for the Biker. Take every precaution to watch out for yourself, because in the end, you may be the only one who can save your life.

Hi everyone, Here’s a few photos of my 2011 Road Glide Custom. I’ve had it less than a year but I’m creeping up on the 10,000 mark soon! I love the way it rides. It fits me perfectly. I was waiting for the day to come for me to test ride a Harley and feel completely comfortable. I found it last year! The only mod other than the touring windshield (I’m 6’4”), is the color shift reflective paint I did between all the stock solver pinstripes. It found a metal flake that shifted to all colors of the rainbow as you move around the bike. It’s simple, eye catching and was so simple. I did it in my garage with the metal still on the bike! Anyway, I can’t ride it enough and just got back from a 5 day road trip to Milwaukee. It was during that horrible heat wave. The bikes temp gauge read 120 for 3 days! We were able to get to 9-10 dealerships, the Pilgrim Rd. Powertrain Plant, and of course, the Harley Davidson museum. Safe Riding! John C Mentor, Ohio

Hot Hot Hot!!! The temps are soaring and I have seen more of us (back and front) riding in shorts! When the temps are reaching 100 degrees, what else can we do? I do think we ladies are a little more careful when we choose different attire. I know several guys that have some burns forgetting that those shorts are to keep you cool but those pipes are still hot. Ouch! With the summer in full swing, and events going on all over the place, I am hearing some great stories that are just too good to keep to myself. Therefore, this article is going to be devoted to a few other riders and their experiences. However, no names will be mentioned but you know who you are and thank you for sharing! Let’s talk about windshields. There is a purpose for windshields but my personal opinion is that I like the look of a bike without one. But I am on the back so I don’t have to worry about flying debris, dirt and bugs. And, in the case of him leaning over for some reason, I am short behind a big guy so my chances of getting hit with anything are very slim. I am pretty protected. Not so with lots of riders including some friends of mine.
Enough about those windshields. I really want to talk about sissy bars. Sometimes I think I am the only one out there without one. There has never been one on the back of that old Shovel and I am fully under the impression that there never will be. So, because I have never had one, I don’t know what I am missing. And I am afraid that if I rode with one, I would definitely see the difference and be hooked. There are many kinds of sissy bars and some look very cool and are very comfortable….so I am told. Again, I don’t know first-hand and don’t see me knowing that in the near future so I have to rely of what I am told. A friend of mine had a very nice looking sissy bar. Very short but padded, very subtle but she liked it and it was comfortable. If a sissy bar could be termed as classy, this was it. But, her guy decided that he wanted to replace it with a new sissy bar. So far, that sounds very sweet that her guy wanted her to be more comfortable yet go for a different look. Not sweet at all! You should see this thing. It’s like a metal uneven hard thing jutting out of the back of the bike similar to a Gothic Weapon. (And that is a name coined by one of his best friends!) If you took it off and laid it flat, it looks like a form you would use on your jigsaw to cut a piece of wood. And did I mention no padding! If you can’t lean back and be comfortable, then you don’t have a sissy bar. Welcome to my world! Windshield or not….comfortable sissy bar or none at all….learning to duck or sit up straight, we are all having fun! And for me, it’s always from the back of the bike! BIKE NIGHTS
So, my friends are on their way to meet up with people for some cool beverages. The windshield on their Road King, Matilda, was off. And here comes a bee! By the time he said “Incoming” and ducked out of the way for the bee that was buzzing toward him, she got hit (not stung) right in the middle of her forehead. No harm done…no sting but a whack in the forehead and a dead bee somewhere along the side of the road! So you are thinking...hmmmm. A windshield would have prevented that situation. Not really since the time before, with the windshield on, the bee hit the wind deflector and came up under the windshield. I am sensing that these friends just have a bee problem whether the windshield is on or
off. Oh, did I mention that they have a yellow bike? Just saying….! I guess when we are on the back; we have to be ready to duck no matter what!

jeff loomis Of the many, many great guitar prodigies out there, a few tend to get missed mainly because they aren’t force fed to you by the media giants of main stream radio. As I have said before some of the best music is never played on public radio simply because it doesn’t fit mainstream media giant’s corporate agendas. If you’re a metal head or a guitar player yourself, you’ll know who Jeff Loomis is, & if you don’t YOU SHOULD! Jeff Loomis is a mild mannered mid western guy hailing from a little cheese town in Wisconsin. At the early age of 16 Jeff was turning people’s heads when he won the Wisconsin guitar wars contest. Jeff was even auditioned for Megadeth at 16 during the So far…so what tour! Although Mr. Mustaine agreeably said he could do the job, he was denied the position due to his age. Some things in life are best left alone to invent themselves, and Jeff has done just that. Jeff played in Sanctuary in 1990 & 91, and then shifted over to help form the incredible Nevermore. After a colossal run of music and touring spanning some 18 years, Nevermore lived up to its ominous name. In 2011 Jeff decided it was time he go in his own direction and continue full time work on his own artistry. Jeff has released two solo albums now, 2008’s Zero order of Phase and the 2012 release of Plains of Oblivion. Currently on U.S. tour through August 8th supporting his second solo release on Metal Blade Records, I was able to catch up with Jeff for a few minutes and ask a couple questions before he took the stage and ripped our faces off! Any interests besides music? Honestly … I’m so busy with Music, and it so deeply rooted into my life it truly is all that I do. I mean I spend time with my family or kick back and read, watch movies, or shows like Breaking Bad, or Walking Dead! Love that show! What happened with Sanctuary? Well, I came in at the end you know, however it basically came down to this. At the time 1990-91 the big new thing was “Grunge”, the label sort of wanted us to lean in that direction. Well, Lenny (Lenny Rutledge) kind of saw something big there and wanted to move in that direction, in effect cash in on the opportunity you know? Problem with all that was that Warrel Dane, Jim Sheppard, and 46
I, well we wanted to stay true to our beliefs and we want to continue to play metal! So, there was a little difference of opinion and direction. However, Im happy everthing went as it did because that allowed all 3 of us to bond together and form Nevermore in 1991 and continue what we love to so. I’ve made it clear I’m not a fan of public radio and how much BS it is these days? Or do you see what I do, and that our metal culture is underground in the states and the metal movement of the 80’s and 90’s is overseas now days? I definitely agree with you man, the music scene across the ponds is huge. Yes we are underground in a way except for a few stations here and there that still carry some programming. However it makes metal and hard rock that much more fun and cool that you have to seek out what’s out there and chart your own taste in bands and sounds you know? But I think it’s also cool that the internet has helped out with some of that, and you can find great music stations anywhere in the world now? You’re not just limited to what you can tune in anymore. When did you first decide you wanted to play guitar? Well actually I started out playing drums when I was 12, I’d jam along to records on a little 3 piece Ludgwig kit. I got bored with it realy quick though. My dad had a classical guitar lying around, so I picked that up one day started messing around, I took some lessons to get my feet wet and ended up taking to it pretty quickly I think. I began listening to a lot of 70’s bands and learning to play along to bands like Queen and Electric Light Orchestra. I think I’m blessed with a pretty good ear so that’s how I accelerated so quickly I think. In your younger years who inspired you as a player? Oh man so many people it was a great time you know, late 70 stuff then into the 80s. Really anyone that was Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Practice how often these days? Geese, I practiced so much when I was younger, I’d spend sometimes literally all day playing and practicing 12-14 hours it was crazy. I just play now, I don’t really sit and practice per say, I guess I do that when I’m writing music. Merging different riffs and transitions together to see if they fit. Any ground rules tips for people aspiring to be the next Jeff Loomis? Wow, well met me first start off by saying don’t just listen to one style of music, listen to everything…except county. HAHAHAHA, no seriously so many kids these days end up listening to just one thing and get locked into that, broaden your pallet and listen to classical, and blues, pick up on some of the cool progressions and sounds of the different styles. Can’t emphasize it enough, practice, practice, practice it’s a pain in the ass sometimes but if you want it bad enough it’s worth it and it will pay off. Also get used to playing in front of people, don’t just sit and hide somewhere, a lot of people can play by themselves and choke later. It’s just music man have fun with it! Where does the dark edge of your playing come from – what nurtures that mood? I really think it is just kind of me, I listened to old dark classical music sometimes as a kid, and now living in Seattle..well man it’s true it rains all the time. So that dismal mood it emanates sometimes I think helps keep me focused in my writing and my mindset.

We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. Every stop has been recommended by riders and readers of Thunder Roads. We have then checked them out and determined that they are a biker friendly stop that we would recommend to you! Every stop should be friendly and offer a fun experience. Throughout the summer we will keep adding new stops in order to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us. We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. You will see us at Rallies, Bike Nights, and other designated events throughout the summer. Many of these events will have special booths for registration and offer special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards. We are also working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. n June, the Travel Channel came out to Geneva-on-theLake (GOTL) to film for Rand McNally’s Best of the Road Competition. GOTL was selected as one of the 6 top finalists in the category of “Most Fun Small Towns in America”. This should come as no surprise to anyone that is familiar with Geneva-on-the-Lake; but should serve as a wake-up call to all of you that have missed GOTL in your two wheeled travels. Not only is Geneva-on-the-Lake one of the “Most Fun – Small Towns in America”, it is undoubtedly one of the most biker friendly towns in Ohio – possibly the entire Midwest. Over 130 years ago, Geneva-on-the-Lake was developed as a resort community and currently touts itself as Ohio’s First Summer Resort. While Ohio may have many “resort” destinations, it’s hard to imagine one more comfortable and laid back as Geneva-on-the-Lake. GOTL has an incredibly unique, almost retro feel all along its main, mile long “Strip” that runs along the Lake Erie shore. There’s a little bit of everything on this tight strip of businesses, cottages, and parks. From polished fine dining to putput courses and more then a few taverns there’s something for everyone – and somehow Geneva-on-the-Lake blends it all together! Wandering down “the Strip” you’ll see folks from just about every background imaginable – from professionals vacationing with kids to young couples getting away for just the evening. It’s a fun, safe environment that welcomes all – young and old! And unlike just about every other destination that considers itself a resort, Geneva-on-the-Lake isn’t the least bit pretentious and rates are fairly reasonable throughout the town. Add it all together – and you have the makings of a VERY biker friendly destination. And there are bikers – plenty of bikers! In fact, Thunder Roads has more Thunder Run Stops in Geneva then any other area in Ohio. Sportsterz, The Pavilion, High Tide, Survivors Club, and DW3’s were all chosen as recommended riding destinations for Card holders. Truth be told, we could probably add another dozen without even pushing it! From Gyro Mike to the
countless wineries, there are plenty of cool spots to hit in the Geneva area. Throw them all together – and you have an incredible riding destination with something for EVERYONE! For the last 5 years, several of the local business owners have put together one of our favorite rallies of the year – Thunder On The Strip. Thunder On The Strip is a fun event that involves the entire stretch of downtown Geneva-on-the-Lake. Riders can wander from stop to stop; and enjoy great entertainment and camaraderie. The laid back, casual atmosphere of GOTL is a perfect fit for bikers. “A few years ago we came out to Thunder On The Strip for the weekend and it rained the entire time. We still had a blast and despite the weather… there were still more motorcycles then cars on the Strip! This is Ohio’s bikertown!” - Thunder Roads reader This year’s 6th Edition starts on Thursday, September 6th and runs through Sunday, September 9th. Thunder Roads is proud to be a promotional partner of Thunder On The Strip and we will be hosting a THUNDER ROADS ZONE this year at Sportsterz. We will have displays set up; and the Iron Angels® will be hosting events and giveaways! But more on that in our next issue! We strongly recommend Geneva-on-the-Lake as a recommended riding destination any evening – or as a weekend get-away! Hogs for Hound’s Northeast Ohio Ride, June 24th
The first ever “Hog’s for Hound’s” Benefit Poker Run on June 24th for “Fido’s Companion” at Mulligan’s Pub & Grille in Avon was a great success. First timers Mike Sherrill (Co-Founder), Kathy Smola and Kelly Smick did a great job putting this run together and want to THANK Derek Smith and Thunder Roads for their help guiding us and sponsoring this event. “Hog’s for Hounds” had 107 bikes register and everyone received a t-shirt with registration fees (which all went to Fido’s). It was a SAFE, Fun filled day which saved numerous dogs from DEATH ROW! Fido’s Companion is a small 501 (C) 3 RESCUE Organization out of Avon, Ohio. They are VOLUNTEERS who rescue dog’s from death row. Primarily from Lorain County Dog Pound. They also assist with stray dogs and cats funding their spay/ neuter and vet bills for other independent local rescues. Each year The Friends of Chapel Hill House hold a poker run to benefit Chapel Hill House. This years 8th Annual Chapel Hill House Poker Run on May 19, 2012 at the American Legion Post 368 in Prospect Ohio was a huge success. We had 144 this year which is a record. With the support of both the biker community, as well as the local community “The Friends” were able to raise $17,421.00 to help keep Chapel Hill House running and helping the families who desperately need it. Chapel Hill House is a place of respite for families dealing with childhood cancer and all of it’s terrible effects. There were several new additions to the evening, as the Food Truck craze struck with a half dozen of the celebrity diven mobile caterers staking out the back lot. Next door, the newest addition to the Bedford Heights Motorcycle Mile opened its door – South East’s Gears & Chears! Now that summer is in full swing, vacation time will be spent traveling the winding roads while discovering all the hidden gems and interesting roadside attractions that make this country great. From my own personal experience, I can tell you the space on a motorcycle is at a premium, and while on these adventures it never fails that a purchase or two are made that require more space to carry that I don’t have. There are two ways of handling this problem, the first is to plan ahead and realize that you will need extra space so don’t pack to the point that you cannot add anything along the way. The other is to make sure you have the proper gear for the trip. You want enough space to be able to add items along the way, but don’t want so much space that bags are flopping around and not staying secured. While many companies make such luggage, there are pros and cons to all of them, but in the last year Harley-Davidson has redesigned what they offer and introduced their Premium Luggage Collection. In my honest opinion, I believe they have removed most, if not all the negatives that I would have complained about in their previous lines. Let us unzip and look inside at everything this new line of Premium Luggage has to offer us. The Collection offers us eight unique ways of packing our cargo for those long road trips, daily rides or to and from work. With Rider-Friendly Details such as ergonomically designed, large, glove friendly zipper pulls, and solid oversized custom handles for easy transport from the bike to the hotel. The collection also features multi-purpose interlocking D-rings for easy attachment of bungee cords, cargo nets, or other premium luggage items. While fancy aesthetics were a large factor in the design of these bags, we all know strength and durability are the features that sell them. Harley-Davidson used 1680 denier ballistic grade nylon to maintain their sturdy shape while protecting your belongings. The nylon is coated with a high grade UV protectant that will maintain that rich black color through years of baking under that scorching summer sun. When the sun disappears and the rain closes in, the integrated 190 denier nylon rain cover will keep things dry while featuring the same 3MTM ScotchliteTM reflective strip as the piping used to line the sharp edges of their new design. The collection starts off with the Touring Luggage System that features the Large Touring Bag and the Day Bag combination. The Large Touring Bag measures in at 20”W x 10”D x 17”T with a capacity of 3000 cubic inches, while the Day Bag measures in at 13”W x 10”D x 9”T and has a capacity of 900 cubic inches. This system gives you the most versatility for whatever needs you may require. You can use each bag independently or combine them for the ultimate touring setup. If this system is a little too much for your needs you can purchase the Large Touring Bag or the Day Bag individually. 66
For those of you that want maximum space with the convenience of not having to lug that heavy bag all the way to your hotel room, the Rolling Touring Bag is a perfect match for you. This piece, a slightly larger bag than the Large Touring Bag, features sealed ballbearing wheels and a locking two position extension handle for easy transport. The bag measures in at 18.5”W x 10.5”D x 18”T and has a total capacity of 3100 cubic inches. If you like the design of the small Day Bag but need more space, then the Overnight Bag is just what you are looking for. This versatile bag is ideal for shorter trips and will work with either sissy bars or tour-pak racks. Richard Blais was recently on The Chew, and I wrote down this recipe.These (2) recipes are for you, Super B. RICHARD BLAIS’ PASTRAMI SPICED BRISKET 3-4 Pounds Brisket (fatty end) 1/4 Cup of Coriander Seeds 1/4 Cup of Black Pepper 2 Tbls. Cayenne Pepper 1/4 Cup Salt 1 Cup of Dark Brown Sugar 3/4 Cup of Yellow Mustard 3 Tbls. of Vegetable Oil Rinse your brisket under cold water and pat dry with a clean towel. Season meat generously, both sides, with the salt, pepper, coriander and cayenne pepper Add your 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil to a nonstick skillet or a well-seasoned cast iron skillet. Get it screeching hot on medium high heat. Gently add your brisket down into hot pan & oil and sear the brisket until a dark golden brown on all sides. Remove to a platter to rest until cool, apprx. 20 mins. Meanwhile, arrange 2 giant sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil on your counter. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a small mixing bowl, mix the brown sugar and mustard to make a paste. Rub the brisket with the mustard paste and place on one of the sheets of foil. Make sure that the “fat side” is facing upwards. Place the other sheet of foil on top of meat and pinch and roll up all 4 sides to make sure that it is completely enveloped and no steam or paste can escape. Place in a large casserole dish and cook for a full 10 hours. Remove from oven and just let it rest for 10 minutes on counter. Remove foil carefully and transfer brisket to a large serving plate. This brisket will literally melt in your mouth, plus you have this phenomenal sauce in the foil to pour over it. It makes fantastic sandwiches also. *This is essentially the same way I cook a pot roast when I’m doing it in the oven and not my crock-pot; only with different spices
YET ANOTHER STYLE; BBQ BRISKET 4 Pound Brisket 2 Cups Chicken Stock 2 Bottles of Dark Beer 2 Tbls. of Cumin Seeds; crushed 1 Tbls. Coriander Seeds; crushed 2 Chipotle Peppers; chopped (be sure and wash hands well after handling these and don’t touch your mouth or eyes) Thunder Roads® Magazine ohio
2 Tbls. Adobo Sauce (really Hot Sauce) 1 Large Onion; Sliced 2 Tbls. Cooking Oil (olive or vegetable, your choice) Salt & Pepper your brisket thoroughly Heat a Dutch Oven (any heavy gauge pot w/ tight lid) to high heat; add oil, sear your brisket on all sides, Reduce heat to medium and remove brisket to rest. Add sliced onion, garlic, cumin seeds and coriander seeds. Add the chicken stock, beer and adobo sauce Stir up well. Place brisket back on top of everything in Dutch Oven and place in 350 degree oven for 3 hours until fork tender. All the ingredients you added simmer down to create a truly delicious, natural BBQ sauce. Shred & bun up w/ coleslaw. FROZEN CHEESECAKE SQUARES 2 Frozen, Pre-made Oreo Pie Crust 2 8 oz. Pkgs. of Philly Cream Cheese; softened 1/2 Cup of Sugar or Splenda 1 tsp. Pure Vanilla 1 Tub of Cool Whip; thawed & divided 1 Can of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup Unthaw Oreo pie crusts and warm in oven if stated on directions, then take both crusts and form into a crusted botton in a 9 inch square pan with foil lined bottom and coming up the sides for easy removal. Beat cream cheese, sugar & vanillain large bowl with mixer until light and fluffy. Add 2 full cups of the Cool Whip, beat on low speed until blended. Spread over and high up over pie crust. Freeze for 4 hours. Microwave remaining Cool Whip and chocolate together on high for 1 minute (place a paper towel over top) Stir until chocolate and Cool Whip are well blended. Use foil sides to remove cheesecake from squared pan, drizzle chocolate mix zig-zagy all over squared cheesecake and cut into generous size squares. * Tip: Spoon entire chocolate & Cool Whip mixture into small re-sealable plastic bag and snip the end with scissors to have better control on your zig-zagging with the chocolate design. 12 year old scotch An old, well traveled biker sits in a bar watching as a haughty young man comes in and orders a shot of 12 year old scotch. The bar tender is irritated and gives him a shot of bar scotch. The man takes a sip and spits the drink out and demands a shot of 12 year old scotch. The bar tender decides to fuck with the man and gives him a shot of 6 year old scotch. He takes a sip and spits it out again and exclaims, “that’s 6 year old scotch, I said I wanted 12 year old scotch!” The bar tender smiles and pours a shot of 9 year old scotch. The man takes a sip and, again, spits it out, exclaiming ,angrily, “I said 12 year old scotch!” The bar tender decides that the man does, indeed, know his scotch and pours him his shot of 12 year old scotch. He sips it once, then sips it again, and says, “ Now that is 12

year old scotch !” The old biker sidles up to the young man with a glass of liquid and says to him “Here, taste this”! The young man takes a swig and immediately spits it out and says “It tastes like piss”! “Yeah”, says the old biker,”It’s mine, How old am I”? ________________________________________________ An officer assigned to a lonely stretch of highway came upon the scene of an obvious hit and run. There in the middle of the road was a local biker known for his extramarital activities, his bike was a twisted heap, and the biker was pretty banged up, but alive. Hey Joe the cop asked did you get the license plate of the vehicle that hit ya? No, Joe grunted painfully, but I know my old lady’s laugh anywhere!
