One of the real challenges of running Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) – is also one of its most exciting aspects, and that is our job is truly never “DONE”. The motorcycle world encompasses so much and there are always so many things to talk about, cover, and feature in this magazine – our job is truly never really complete. There are always more events that we could share, more rides for us to cover, and more motorcycles to shoot. There are always more products to evaluate, bike nights to hit, and stories to tell. It’s a daunting task that can never truly be completed. So every month, we are forced to pick and choose what we can cover and fit into our magazine and what we must pass on. Some stories we push to the back of the burner and hope that we can keep them warm for another time. Others we put on the shelf with the intention of dusting off for another edition. There are some stories we simply decide we don’t have the time or space to include. In most cases there are some enthusiasts that don’t care for that choice – and sometimes they even take the time to share their “opinion” with me. To many I lament, if there were only 3 more days to the week or 2 more of me. In all honestly, though, even then – we would still not be able to share all the stories, print all the pictures, or promote all the events. Even with us printing the largest regional motorcycle magazine in the nation – we still don’t have enough room to cover all the rides and events that are held. Even with our greatly expanded event section – we still aren’t able to include everything that’s coming up (although we work real hard to come close!). There’s also the issue of timing. So many times, we are approached by well-meaning people that ask if we can help promote their ride or charity event which is being held in two or three days. While I would always love to help, the reality is that we can’t cover it all. Over the last year we’ve focused on another aspect of the magazine, though; which has allowed us a lot more space and a faster response time when it comes to sharing information – Facebook. While Facebook and the social media scene is nothing new, TRO has developed a more active approach to utilizing this resource which offers a lot to motorcycle enthusiasts. Facebook allows us to post a seemingly limitless number of event photos, notices for upcoming events, and last minute updates on things going on all across the Midwest. Facebook also allows us to easily interact with riders all across the state. If we post something, you’re able to immediately comment or ask any questions that you like. You can give your feelings on a topic, your review of a stop, or simply ask when a ride starts. Facebook allows all of this and so much more, and the response from our readers and enthusiasts has been overwhelming. At the time I’m writing this – over 120,000 motorcycle enthusiasts have become “fans” and we are reaching an average of over 1 million enthusiasts a week with our posts. To help drive this demand we have posted more than 10,000 photos we’ve taken and are sharing new events every week. The numbers are staggering, but they are real. If you’re online and aren’t already a fan – I’d invite you to check us out. We’re always open and it’s completely free at www.Facebook.com/thunderroadsohio. Facebook and our website will never replace the magazine, because I believe riders will always want to hold something in their hands and feel the pages turn. These digital options just give us more options and allow us to tell even more of the story. As always, thank you for your support and I hope to see you all out on the road!

AS TOLD BY THE IRON COWBOY last year’s climactic splash in Sturgis. With them once again pumping up Sturgis as the showcase for exciting new 2015 models, would they really roll out the new paint schemes a month early? Maybe that’s a strategy to take if the real surprise is a whole new segment of the Indian lineup! Of course, all of this is pure speculation and not based on any tips or industry gossip.
PIQUA BIKEFEST
NEW INDIAN TRAIL BIKES? Last year in regards to their Indian Motorcycle launch, Steve Menneto, VP of Polaris Motorcycles, commented “you can be assured Indian is not going to be making just heavyweight cruisers. We want to have representation in a wide variety of motorcycle segments..”. In record time, Polaris acquired the Indian name and brought three variations of a start from scratch motorcycle to market. Taking queues from earlier incarnations under the Indian name, Polaris introduced three models built on a platform that incorporated a lot of new concepts. A year later we prepare for the 2015 model unveil – which is again occurring at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, an event which was essentially launched from the back of Indians; I’m left wondering when the next stage is to be unveiled. When is the new Indian going to head back into other markets such as racing and off-road? The Indian legacy is one of racing and dirt bikes just as much (if not more) than one of street cruisers. Their hillclimb bikes are the stuff of legends and Indian dirt track bikes are still found on the vintage circuits. It’s also worth noting that the off road and performance markets are certainly ones that Polaris has a lot of experience in… albeit with a few more wheels. I was also surprised to see Indian unveil their two tone 2015 models at the AMA’s Vintage Days this past month considering 6

Thunder Roads Ohio is excited to be playing a major role in the development of the upcoming Piqua BikeFest (September 19-20 in Piqua, Ohio). It’s shaping up to be a truly unique community driven rally that everyone should find enjoyable. Favorites Jasmine Cain and Tony Rio are featured headliners along with popular local acts such as Latter and Higgins Madewell in terms of live music – and the Sinister Stunts team will be entertaining the crowd with their riding skills. TRO will be hosting a Vintage and Custom Bike Show on Saturday morning (Sept 20th) and we would like to invite everyone to come out and showcase their bikes. We will have multiple judged classes and a Best of Show determined by the popular vote. The winners will be invited to join the row of champions at the 2015 I-X Center Piston Power Show in March. More on that to follow…. For more information on Piqua BikeFest, visit PiquaBikeFest.com
DEVIL’S STAIRCASE Once again, Thunder Roads Ohio has teamed up with the Dayton Motorcycle Club and Led Sled Customs for the Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb Races (October 12, 2014) in Oregonia, Ohio. This is the 65th Anniversary for what is billed the Midwest’s Most Exciting Motorcycle Event and expectations are high with some exciting additions to the lineup. Last year’s Bike Show was the first ever in the history of the races and it was considered a tremendous success even though it was introduced just a month before the event. Pat Patterson, of Led Sled Customs, created one of the most unique trophies ever seen and had attendees scrambling to bring their

bikes up to the show. This year, The Law Offices of Ralph C Buss joined the team and helped commission the Led Sled crew to create a totally unique custom bike that will be GIVEN AWAY at the end of the races. Drawing from pre-selected finalists and race fans the day of the event, the winner must be present to win. According to Pat, “the bike will be a really cool, hard tail chopper with a lot of inspiration from the trail and hillclimb bikes being raced that day. Nobody has ever seen anything like it.” Visit our facebook page for updates on the races and announcements regarding an unveil of the Led Sled creation – www.facebook.com/ thunderroadsohio.
2015 I-X CENTER PISTON POWERED AUTO-RAMA If you attended the Cleveland Piston Power Show the last few years you probably left amazed by all that they crammed into the over 1 million square feet of exhibit space found in the former tank plant. It is truly one of the nation’s most exciting shows – showcasing more vehicles than any other indoor event of its type. Unfortunately, as a biker, I couldn’t help but feel as though the motorcycles were under represented at the show. We weren’t even half way through this year’s show before we began brainstorming on how we might build up our presence for upcoming years. As luck would have, it turns out that Show Manager Steve Legerski was thinking along the same lines – and we are now proud to announce some exciting new changes for the 2015 show. I’m sharing a copy of the official press release here that announces our new partnership with both the I-X Center and the International Master Bike Builder Association (IMBBA) in regards to the 2015 Piston Power Show. Our involvement isn’t just us throwing our name behind the show, we will be actively working to develop the bike show aspect and overall representation of the motorcycle community. Already, we’ve begun designating bike shows across the state as qualifiers for special invitations to the event and lining up bike builders to be featured within the show. It’s our intention to help develop this show into one of the nation’s premier motorcycle events – and with such a partnership, I’m certain we will accomplish it. Press Release THE SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT I-X PISTON POWERED AUTO-RAMA PRESENTED BY RAD AIR COMPLETE CAR CARE AND TIRE CENTERS ANNOUNCES STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH THE INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDER ASSOCATION AND THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Cleveland, Ohio (July 11, 2014) : The Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama Presented by RAD AIR Complete Car Care and Tire Centers announced today its strategic alliance with the International Master Bike Builders Association and Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine. The alliance will bring the IMBBA and their judges to the I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama to judge all the motorcycles in 12 classes along with the Duck Award, Best in Show and Pro Builders class of bikes. Thunder Roads Magazine will host the Thunder Zone at the show and will collect ballots from show-goers for the “People’s Choice” award. The IMBBA will also be inviting Bike Builders from throughout the country to attend the show. Participants can register their motorcycles for $50 on-line, at Summit Racing Equipment in Tallmadge and at RAD AIR Complete Car Care and Tire Centers. “We are always looking for innovations that can be driven through marketing channels that make the show bigger and better for everyone,” said Show Manager Steve Legerski. “The IMBBA and Thunder Roads Magazine provide those two elements to our overall equation designed to add more horsepower to the show with more cash awards while preserving the history of the show with the $1,500 Duck Award.” “It is with great pride that the IMBBA has been selected to judge this show. Working within this strategic alliance with the I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama and Thunder Roads Ohio, the IMBBA will seek out the most talented bike builders and enthusiasts throughout the country and reward them for their passion,” said IMBBA Founder and President Jeff Starke. “All of the IMBBA judges strictly adhere to a straight-forward set of published guidelines used to award points and all IMBBA judges go through a training apprenticeship, judging bikes alongside founding president and chief judge, Jeff Starke. The judges use trade standards to award points that define the bike’s Fit, Form, Function & Safety.” “Thunder Roads Ohio is excited to present our Thunder Zone as part of the 2015 I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama. Working with the International Master Bike Builders Association, we look to further expand the motorcycle component of this already world class show. As a compliment to the IMBBA Judged Classes, Thunder Roads Ohio will coordinate voting for the People’s Choice Award amongst motorcycle enthusiasts attending the show,” said Thunder Roads Publisher Derek Smith. “While the technical aspects of the Judged Classes are critical to an objective consideration of each entry and allow unprecedented professional recognition for builders; the People’s Choice Award represents the emotional and popular vote of the enthusiasts which drive our industry. Both aspects are essential for a builder’s long-term success and are well represented within the show.” 8

About the IMBBA:
The IMBBA was founded in 2005 by well-known custom bike builder, Jeff Starke, who had also worked as chief technical advisor and lead judge for the World Famous Rat’s Hole Chopper Show until the show’s owner, “Big Daddy Rat” Karl Smith died during Daytona Bike Week 2002. The IMBBA currently has certified members in 10 countries and a growing number of IMBBA judges capable of judging bike shows around the world, using the standardized point system. Member-representatives have been helping to spread the IMBBA story since 2005, and continue to help other tradesmen become certified. The IMBBA point system is aimed at globally strengthening the industry by rewarding performance and accomplishment, and ultimately by rewarding charitable giving within the industry.

Legislative Update August 2014 Campaign season is here. Our state legislators are in their home districts. This is a great time of year to meet your legislator. Especially during an election year, legislators are at fairs, festivals, parades, and any other event drawing the general public. This is a good time to track them down and talk to them about your concerns. Quit complaining about the government and get out and do something about it. Our legislators aren’t mind readers. If you have something that you feel is being ignored or more attention needs to be paid to an issue, talk to your legislator. The officials I have dealt with in Ohio have an honest desire to serve their constituents. They may not agree with you, but they will listen to you and explain their position. It is also a good chance to meet the candidates. Check your local news media for meet the candidate meetings. A lot of these are free and are a great opportunity to hear the candidates and find out their priorities and/or agendas if they are elected. Introduce yourself. If you are an ABATE member, wear an ABATE shirt or hat.
If they were in office this past session, they should recognize ABATE. Most will offer to help you if they can. Get a business card from them. Take them up on the offer when you have an issue on your mind. The important thing to do in these types of meetings is to make contact with them and get their contact info. Campaign commercials can be annoying. Don’t allow this feeling stop you from getting involved in the government. I believe that this government is still of the people and by the people. That means the people should be telling the government what to do. Consider yourself the government’s employer. They work for us. We pay their wages. If we don’t like what they do, we’ll find somebody else to support. The people (that means YOU) have to get involved. Ride Safe. Scott “Woody” Wood State Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc.
Safety Update Hi Friends, What a great summer we are having! Yes, we have had some rain but not much on weekends and not to the point of stopping a great ride. I see more riders on the road this year than years past. With this being said, we need to keep up the fight to ride Smart. The stats for this year are rising. 2013 – 1725 crashes and 54 fatalities. 2014 - 1088 crashes and 47 fatalities. Keep putting signs out, check on your friends and talk up riding smart. You have seen our rubber wristbands that say “Look Twice Save a Life”. We have new stock and would like to get them out to everyone. At the State board meeting we passed out these wristbands to every region to sell on consignment. Let’s push them because it’s a good way to get the word out. If you are doing a special event and need some for free, contact me and we will see what we can do. Has everyone purchased a new neon Foundation shirt? They are going fast. We have added some new styles since the start, so check them out at the next state event. Starting at $10.00 - what a deal. And it’s a great way to spread the “Look Twice Save a Life” message. I have been out and about spreading the word about Motorcycle Awareness. One event that I think I made a great impression was at the BP Refinery Safety Fair in Toledo. Dan Waterfield helped us get in and we appreciate that. I will be returning to the Worthington Industries Safety Fair in Columbus in September. Love talking to non-motorcycle folks for a change of pace. They are very interested in what ABATE stands for and the things we do. I also always find bikers who are not members and try to educate them on the benefits of joining. Hopefully some of them follow up. To pass on some good news, there is a new head guy at Motorcycle Ohio, George “Chuck” Stiteler. Welcome and hope all goes well. MO is hunting for Instructors and you can go on line and get all the info at http://www.motorcycle.ohio.gov/. Time is short so they are willing to work with any interested person. Last and then I’m out of here. On TV, “The News” only seems to report the worst parts of everything. We need to let them know immediately when they get the facts wrong, before its old news. And we need to work on not giving them bad things to report, such as NOISE - watch the throttle out time in towns and SPEED - stay within the posted speed limit and set a good example. Remember ride SMART. The police will use these as reasons to stop you and maybe cite you for something else. That would be BAD NEWS and TV news would report it, and blow it out of proportion in a heartbeat. Ride with in your Limits Mike Stock | ABATE of OHIO Inc. |Safety and Education Director Mikestock419@gmail.com | 419-654-5446 10

FROM THE BACK OF by Nancy Beach THE BIKE
ope everyone is enjoying this great summer weather and taking advantage of it by getting lots of riding in! We have been riding more this summer than last with lots of little trips and a weekly ride to Bike Night at Sheffield Lake’s Quaker Steak and Lube. And the Jack Daniels Saloon in Sandusky. And with lots of festivals throughout the state, and bike parking making it convenient, we have enjoyed many wonderful nights. The summer has been fun and I hope it lasts and lasts! So, I have to tell a few fun stories. You always meet a lot of great people when you are out riding. But I don’t always take their pictures. Not the case with Jim. We had to get his picture at one of the Bike Nights since he was sitting there, enjoying the band and reading Thunder Roads Ohio! If I run into any of you, and you have a TRO with you, you bet I am taking your picture! I had to add the picture of a friend of ours. He was the original owner of the Shovel I so lovingly speak of. He has a couple of bikes but the one he was riding that day is so cool! After much wrenching, that thing is a dynamo. Talk about fast! Perfect timing as we were home and just happened to stop by. And, I had my camera ready. I always talk about the adventures of riding the old Shovel but there are adventures with a new bike as well. Just an observation, or maybe some advice…don’t forget that gas key. Leaving the gas station headed back home and riding on fumes can be a little nerve wracking! Enough said. Our next adventure, is at the end of the month and we are off to the Easyrider Rodeo in Chillicothe! We have been going for years...this will be my 9th…this will be his 25th! We get there early and pick the right spot…close enough to everything but far enough away. We always make sure that we stop to see the guys at the Lost Tribe Clubhouse. Great group of guys and they open up the clubhouse for those attending the rodeo. The antique bar is incredible. And you can’t stop without writing your name on the wall before you leave. It is a major trip as we take the camper, the trailer, the Shovel, Four-wheeler and the dog. A lot has changed in a year as we have added a couple of puppies to the family. The four-wheeler is for zipping around in the field and giving out magazines. Or, getting gas! The dogs….well you have to take them! You just have to! So if you plan on being there and see the banner, stop and say Hi! I will have my camera ready! Even if I am on the back of the bike!

Woodland’s Bike Night Every Friday Night (Rain or Shine!) Columbus, Ohio Friday Night Bike Night at Woodlands is unique in the fact that it was started by bikers that were all refugees from other canceled bike nights. After the original group of 5 attended a benefit for the Huckleberry House, stepping onto the patio here felt like home. That next Friday was our first bike night, and we have had a group gather there every Friday ever since. Our bike night doesn’t stop for winter; we gather at Woodland’s Backyard year around. It’s not the biggest bike night, and we don’t always have a band, but you will never have to push your way through a crowd or scream over the music so your friends can hear you. If are looking for a nice laid back bike night, join us at Woodland’s Backyard on Friday night. R. Alan Smith – DDA Ohio, TRO Contributor

PRESENTED BY RIDER INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Rider Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!
The Way it Works
The Winners
Each month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop.
If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a BiketoberfestÒ Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead.
Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!
• Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).
State and Stop Prizes
BONUS Check-in’s!
Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
The 2014 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accomodate

riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.
and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.
It’s really that Simple! 1.

Ride out to these stops and show them your card.
4.
And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!
The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
NEW FOR 2014 – You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio.
We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com
PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your past Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over.
Just Get Out and Ride!
Pick up your card and hit some stops!
Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops.
As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com
Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.
FEATURE PRIZES for August 2014
Thunder Roads Ohio will be selecting 20 Buckeye Thunder Run Check-In’s during the month of August for a chance to win a 2014 Harley-Davidson Dyna Lowrider as part of a promotion with Carlton Harley-Davidson in Mantua. This exciting motorcycle is a flash back to the classic cruisers of the 70’s updated with modern features such as the Twin Cam 103 engine and a six speed Cruise Drive® Transmission. (Photo may not represent actual prize bike. Email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com for more details.)
This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding 26

or this next installment on motorcycle basics, we’ve decided to focus on two basics – how to cross challenging surfaces and how to pack your bike for an extended motorcycle trip.
Riding Across Challenging Surfaces
Just like life, rarely do we find perfect roads to travel. Some roads, however, are more challenging than others – so it’s important to understand how to deal with bad conditions or obstacles on the road. As always, the key is to maintain balance and control of the motorcycle. • If you are riding in a group or with others, immediately signal them that there is a problem ahead. • Downshift and slow before hitting the problem area. Once your in the problem area, don’t try to change direction or speed abruptly. Maintain control and ride through the area riding in a straight line, as upright as possible.
32
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
• If you come across debris, such as a 2x4 piece of wood, rise up on the footpegs and shift your weight to the back of the seat as your front wheel comes to the obstacle. This will make it easier for the front wheel to rise up and over the board. Then as the bike passes over the board, shift your weight forward so that the rear wheel can ride over it.
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
Gratings and Grooved Surfaces Gratings, steel mesh bridges, and grooved pavement can all cause your bike to act peculiar. If you get a lot of vibration in your handlebars – don’t fight it! Maintain control of your bike and keep moving forward.
Rain
Besides limiting visibility and making things uncomfortable, rain also can cause the road to become slippery or difficult to ride. Dimples and imperfections in the road can become filled with water, which can be a challenge. Water will also cause oil from passing cars and vintage bikes to float to the surface – making the road extremely slippery. Whenever possible just stop and take shelter. In many cases the rain may pass shortly and you won’t have to deal with it. After the first few minutes of a heavy rain, the oil may also be washed away – lessening the issue. However, if you have to proceed, make sure that you are able to see and maintain control of your bike. Just like any challenging surface, avoid sudden speed or direction changes and keep your bike upright and balanced.

Packing for a Motorcycle Trip When packing for a motorcycle trip, only take what you need For this section, we would like to turn things over to Craig Allen Ripley – an experienced rider that tours America on his Victory Vision. How and what you pack for a motorcycle trip depends on several variables: • When and where you are going • How long you are going to be on the road • What space or luggage you have available Riding a touring bike, I have the benefit of hard saddle bags and a touring trunk with a top rack, however you may not have all that built-in storage capacity. But fear not, depending on what you ride, it is still possible with readily available bags and a little creativity to carry everything you need. The list below was assembled for a three week trip traveling from the Boston, MA area to Prescott, AZ, up into Yellowstone, then Sturgis and back to New England. So we could be traveling through a wide variety of terrains and weather conditions. For this tour we are not going to be camping so a sleeping bag and tent are of course missing from the list. Storage Capacity The Victory Vision has 29 gallons of built-in storage capacity. Some have complained about the size of the saddle bags, but I have been able to carry enough clothing and equipment for a four day twoup trip--and brought back some additional purchases (made by the wife) using just the stock saddlebags and top-case. THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
On longer, single rider trips I have packed for as many as ten days. Typically I always overpack, so this time, eventhough my buddies and I am going on a longer trip, I am limiting myself to 7 days worth of clothing. At two points during the ride we will spend two nights in the same location, during which we will wash our clothing and restock if necessary. For this longer trip I am carrying my computer and camera equipment, so I am going to add one additional bag that will set on the passenger seat, providing some additional low-back support as well as additional storage capacity.

Right Saddlebag
All of this goes in the right saddlebag-with room to spare. It is important to put your tools and first aid kit on the right side of your bike (or at least in a centrally mounted bag). The reason for this is that if you have to pull of the road for an emergency or breakdown you will not be standing next to on-comming traffic as you try to access your tools. THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

BY DENNIS MARTIN- THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE OF MO/SO ILL.
B
ack in early July, Harley-Davidson’s “Project LiveWire, The Experience Tour” began to cross the country along Route 66. I was able to get a close up look of the electric motorcycle labeled “LiveWire” in Kirkwood, MO at Doc’s Harley-Davidson. This was one of the early stops on the 30 stop tour. Keep in mind that these electric motorcycles are not for sale and this tour is to get feedback from the riding public. The largest hurdle at this point is in the technology of storing power in batteries that are small and can charge rather quickly. Once a leap in technology happens, the market of electric vehicles will most certainly take off. The current electric vehicle batteries are big and heavy in order to have a user friendly product. Whether or not an electric vehicle is meant for you certainly depends on how you intend to use it. Higher rates of speed uses more power from the battery, so an electric car on a highway doing 60mph may only go 200 miles before recharging. On the flip side of that, a city driver that may only see speeds of 30mph will be able to go about 350miles. Then there is the added weight to the vehicle to take into account, as well as the recharging time. As you can see there are many variables thus this Project LiveWire is a great way to collect information from the consumers. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jeff Richlen, the Chief Engineer - New Product Delivery, of the HarleyDavidson Motor Company. The 33 electric motorcycles on tour are demonstrators and were specifically built for the demonstration experience. The main focus is getting the rider’s input of an electric motorcycle, so that if they were to go to the market in the future, H-D wants to meet the rider’s expectations of a great electric motorcycle. They could have built a prototype, put it on display with ropes around it for everyone to look at it, but that’s not the Harley-Davidson way. Since they are going to take the voice of the riders, they want everyone to be able to touch it and sit on it to get a true
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
experience. Project LiveWire is certainly doing what they want it to do. Everyone was able to make their own assessment by seeing, touching and listening to the motorcycle. Simply go to project.harley-davidson.com, so that everyone’s voice will be heard with this customer-led product. When the LiveWire goes into production, the performance and specifications will be much different than these demonstrator models. Breakthroughs in technology happen all the time and Harley-Davidson will be prepared to capitalize on the electric motorcycle market with an outstanding ride. To find out when the tour is coming to your area, go to the website project.harley-davidson.com. Some locations are now allowing demo rides.

RIDERS RAISE MONEY FOR VETERANS

ith each streaming a large American flag behind them, the two lead riders at the 9th Annual BMR Motorcycle Run in Geauga County, roared out of the Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton, Ohio, at mid-morning on June 29, leading the way to raising $11,000 to help Geauga County Veterans. Despite the forecast of rain, over one-hundred riders took part, including veterans and family members showing their support. The sun shone on a made-to-order day for the 60 mile ride, which stopped for a ceremony of remembrance at the Geauga County Veterans Memorial, and then continued on the scenic roads of Geauga County. Motorcycle riders from the Geauga County Sheriff’s Department, who donated their time, assured everyone’s safety. A ride that began with coffee and donuts ended with lunch, music by DJ Crazy Dave, freebies and a 50-50 raffle that netted the winner almost $400. The sheriff’s deputy who won the 50-50 prize money donated all of it back to the fund for the veterans. BMR is the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club which holds this event on the last Sunday in June. The money has provided funds for the construction of the Geauga County Veterans Memorial on Merritt Road just east of S.R. 44, Giant Eagle gift cards given to veterans (especially at the holidays such as Thanksgiving), and the purchase of heating oil and other assistance with housing maintenance and repairs. Maintenance and housing repairs support is given in cooperation with Geauga County’s Habitat for Humanity. For example, when a veteran needs a ramp or inside repairs and can’t provide it for himself or herself, BMR will buy the supplies needed and Habitat volunteers will donate the labor. Co-chairs Heidi Hess and Brad Wadsworth said, “We are deeply grateful for the support of the riders and all the volunteers who made this event possible. Next year will be our 10th annual ride and we look forward to it being an even bigger and better event.” Submitted by Chris Livers

The Tortoise or the Hare? I was walking a path through the woods in the hill country of southern Ohio the other day and came upon a yellow & brown shelled turtle in the middle of the path coming the opposite direction. I stopped and spoke to the turtle, but as you might guess it did not answer me. I was reminded of the old story of the speedy rabbit and the slow moving turtle who engaged in a race. At the sound of the starting signal the rabbit took off like a shot. After a short time the rabbit felt he was so far ahead he didn’t have to worry about the turtle ever catching up. As the story goes, the rabbit found some food to eat, relaxed, and even took a nap. The turtle, on the other hand, just continued his slow but steady pace inching out the distance a little at a time. After a while he even passed the rabbit as he snoozed. When the rabbit woke up, he realized he had been sleeping for quite some time and hurried off toward the finish line, only to see the turtle cross the finish line before him. I was reminded of Ecclesiastes 9:10 – 12, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol (or the grave) where you are going. I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all. Moreover, man does not know his time: like fish caught in a treacherous net and birds trapped in a snare, so the sons of men are ensnared at an evil time when it suddenly falls on them.” NAS (Italics added) This is written by Solomon probably to people in general, even for today. In the story above the rabbit allowed himself to get side tracked by serving self-centered desires rather than staying focused on the task at hand. In our walk with Christ, we are much the same way. If we do not remain focused on the task at hand (our walk with Christ) we can easily become side
tracked by self-serving desires driven by Satan himself. If the rabbit would have focused on the race with all his might, as verse 10 implies, he would have won the race hands down. We too can win the race of life by living for Christ with a determination, drive, focus, and do it with all our might attitude that will not allow Satan to lead us astray. Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 12:13, “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person”. Did you catch that, the conclusion is fear God and keep His commandments, because they apply to everyone – even me. GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

The Huntress and her Artist David Uhl at Ohio Bike Week
By Pamela Piddock, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor
M
ost people go to Ohio Bike Week for the “ride,” bike gazing, rock ‘n’ roll music, and the wild party that is sure to follow late into the evening. But this year, for me and for many others, it was the excitement to finally meet David Uhl in person and to take in his wonderful collection of artwork he brought with him. David is well-known for his Women of HarleyDavidson collection, Sturgis, and Daytona art, but he also has a vast variety of other collections of vintage art. He started sketching pictures from a very early age. While in his presence, I witnessed a man walk up to him and hand him a sketch David did for him in 8th grade of a longhaired, bearded man in a large brim cowboy hat. The look on David’s face was amazement that the gentleman still had it. In high school, David won a scholarship to the Colorado Institute of Art, but was unfulfilled with the program after a year and focused his talents on commercial illustration... FedEx, IBM, and Coca-Cola to name a few. After a few years observing the motorcycle world, his love of the culture and its history started to come alive through his art. The world of fine art, oil painting and Harley-Davidson started to seep into his blood. There are many articles that have been done on David Uhl’s history, but I desired to bring to our readers more about who he was from the soul and mind of an artist and what exciting creations are coming in the future. I thought it would be great to show up dressed as his latest release from the “Steampunk” series, “The Huntress,” to do the interview. I know, I know! But I couldn’t resist! He was immediately warm and soothing upon greeting me; it was almost hypnotizing. I wondered how in the midst of all the craziness around us he seemed so calm. 44
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
David said he starts his day with calligraphic meditation. He then took a sketch he had on the table and flipped it over and in calligraphy, penned the complete alphabet in one beautiful flowing line. His penmanship in itself is amazing, and I was fascinated with the almost romantic stillness of a moving pen. If you love history and old photographs like I do, you will love all of his collections. One of my favorite pieces hanging in the gallery is “Lucky Dog.” This painting was from a very old photograph he secured the rights to. It featured European looking ladies from the early 1920s enjoying all the things that I do-riding my motorcycle, wind in my hair, my best friend at the beach, and smell of salt water in the air! This piece has wonderful texture in the painting. It’s layered and the feather looking strokes create graceful movement. The flow of sand under the sidecar, the hint of the knickers peeking from underneath the sundress…it all brings back memories for me ... nostalgia. I was not the only one that felt that way. As we sat there talking, a retired Marine came up to David very excited about his aviation and military pieces. He asked about the planes in the paintings and told David briefly about himself and his love of planes. You could tell that it was good memories for him, and that, in itself, was a priceless moment. The most endearing quality a person can have is when you talk to them, they look you directly in the eye and concentrate on your conversation; they are sincerely listening to what you are saying. I observed that for hours with David and everyone he spoke with that passed through the galley while I was hanging around. Everything from the “Chance Encounter” with the Pope to his “The Reckoning” of Steven Tyler, David’s work continues to captivate all, which led me to the question I have always wanted to ask him if I met him in person, “What goes through your mind? How do you decide on what you desire to create?” It was that instant he whisked me deep into the world of quantum physics, and I was desperately trying not to get lost as he explained its relevance to how his mind works. Quantum physics is

the study of the behavior of matter and energy at the molecular, atomic, nuclear and even smaller microscopic levels. In its realm, observing something actually influences the physical processes taking place. Even space and time, which appear to be extremely continuous, have smallest possible values. I glanced up to the painting that was hanging behind him as he spoke and I immediately saw it in a different light. It is obvious he is motivated by great compassion and transcendent wisdom, and at that moment I was rendered speechless. He then glanced down at my hand and pointed at my “Snakecharmer” ring and said, “I like your ring!” He pulled his phone out of his pocket and said, “Here is some cool stuff I’m working on now.” And while I expected to see some new paintings, he instead showed me jewelry designs. It turns out that he is working with NightRider Jewelry. NightRider is a premium jewelry company that specializes in handmade biker rings, pendants and other high quality pieces. He scrolled through his phone to show me first hand some of his designs that he created, and wait until you see them! He had a bracelet on his wrist and the craftsmanship spoke for itself. I could see why he would desire to team up with this skillful group of men. They make their jewelry the way things use to be made with pride and integrity. David Uhl’s designs with NightRider Jewelry will make its grand debut in Sturgis this year. He looked at me and said, “You are the first person I’ve told that to.” OK, more reasons to go to Sturgis this year! He continued to take me on a journey of pictures and times through his phone of his past, present and future. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better situation to be in, and I took it all in with the utmost appreciation and respect. I encourage you to look at his website www.uhlstudios.com and take your own journey of his extraordinary collection of fine art. Art images courtesy Uhl Studios – www.uhlstudios.com

Binte Ji-Matsuri Vintage Show
W
ith over 120 participants this year, Iron Pony’s Binte JiMatsuri event brought a bunch of gorgeous vintage bikes to Westerville, OH, on June 21st. From a sleek little Honda S-90 (like my Dad’s first bike) to a super-rare Kawasaki Tengai owned by Scott Holbrooks, Iron Pony’s Brand Director and organizer of the event, the history and variety made for a great show. Enthusiasts came from all around Columbus to see rare originals and custom restorations. Holbrooks told us, “Japanese motorcycles played a pivotal role in introducing mid & late baby boomers to motorcycles. The 1960’s Japanese bikes were in stark contrast to the hardcore image of postwar bikes from America and Europe. Japanese bikes were “friendlier” and accessible to anyone, in almost any income bracket. Affordable, easy to ride and FUN!” When asked about the recent resurgence of the vintage bike movement, he believes that there are many reasons for all generations to love bikes outside our own era. For more vintage bike pics, check us out online at facebook.com/thunderroadsohio 48

As this generation grows older they wish to connect to their youth. Physical reminders of a simpler time help us remember how it used to be. Vintage Japanese motorcycles are plentiful and relatively inexpensive to collect, store, maintain compared to similar era automobiles. Millennials have become strong fans of vintage Japanese motorcycles. Again, plentiful and inexpensive machines make it easy for cash strapped young people to get on two wheels. Combine this with the connectivity of social media, YouTube tutorials on how to customize your machine, and the green movements repurposing ideals - This soup of conditions has steered us into one of the greatest motorcycle customization generations ever. Gone is the throw-the-aftermarket-catalog-at-your-bike method of customization, this generation embraces making, repurposing, modifying, combining a mash up of several different bikes so what you have is something uniquely yours. - Scott Holbrooks, Iron Pony.

We asked an attendee for his take on the event: “This was my first year attending the VJMC show at Iron Pony and I had a great time. I love bringing out some of my old classics to see the look on people’s faces when they see a bike they had as a kid or maybe it was their first bike ever! These events are great ways to learn more about a bike you have or see something you’ve never heard of. The people behind each bike are just as great too!” Dallas Earwood Owner, Moto Republic There was also a raffle for a 1978 Suzuki GS750E that raised funds for WARM, the Westerville Area Resource Ministry. George from Circleville won the bike with only one ticket! This makes me want to go find a vintage bike to fix up for myself! By Aimee Ritz

Cincinnati Breast Fest Ride By Cheryl Albert It was a beautiful day to ride, and the riders came out in force for the 10th Annual Breast Fest in Cincinnati. It is the largest ride in Southwest Ohio. The count of 1,700 bikes well exceeded the organizers’ expectations of 800 – 1,000 bikes. Organizers, Kathy and Dan “Double D” McCarthy, began the Breast Fest Run 10 years ago to help their daughter’s friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer. The event has grown bigger every year. Each year a beneficiary is chosen by a committee to receive funds. This year, they were able to select two women, as well as The Pink Ribbon Girls as beneficiaries. The ride involves a lot of pre-planning, pre-rides and support from ride groups like Southern Ohio Bikers, Shrine Riders, Legion Riders, Chrome Divas, Fire and Iron, and Hog Riders, who acted as road captains to keep the ride safe. The ride had no major problems. A lot of other volunteers helped to make the event a success. The ride started at the Holy Grail on the banks in downtown Cincinnati. There were bikes on every street surrounding the area. They were split into two waves heading down different routes.

One to Kiatta Saloon in Okeana, and the other to Yaeger-Benson American Legion Post 199. It was an awesome moment when the route crisscrossed and the two groups passed by each other. Riders cheered, took pictures and waved at the other riders. The two groups ended together at McDog’s Lakeside Saloon for the after ride party. They were treated to free food and live music. More than once during the day, I heard someone exclaim, “This is the biggest ride I have ever been on!” The final total was 1,700 bikes. The event raised $47,000. After expenses, $40,000 will be available for distribution to their beneficiaries. The McCarthys would like to thank all who donated and volunteered, as well as their sponsors.

Picture between 6 and 12 thousand fans spread across a mountain track that can be anywhere from 8 to 12 miles long through some really challenging terrain. Racers line up in groups ready to race for the next 2 to 3 hours per race….yes, 2 – 3 hours of flogging the bike and rider as they lap a track they may have seen one time if they are lucky. At the end the racers can tell you each corner, downhill and mud pit in excruciating detail. This is GNCC Racing – America’s Premier Off Road Racing Series. TRPA followed Pennsylvania racer Rob Katich # 60 who was running in the Senior class. He has consistently placed 1st or 2nd throughout the 2014 season in his class. He and his wife Lori had headed down to Masontown WV for the Mountaineer Run the evening prior and set up the RV and took a look at the track. No riders are allowed to test run the course but they can walk or bicycle the 12 miles to get a feel for the race. Other racers and their families set up all over the mountaintop and the familiarity with the GNCC racing lifestyle was apparent. Nods and small waves amongst the crowd, shouts for “Who’s got tape?” and kids running from campsite to campsite to see who had the best snacks set out set the scene. It was immediately apparent that this was a family event. Wives, husbands, moms, dads, brothers and sisters helping their racers prepare. I met one group that had 2 generations racing and 2 more generations helping prep those racers. We heard mostly country music playing on the loudspeakers with a local nod to the West Virginia location by having “Country Roads” preamble the race about 10 minutes out. Rob races on a Honda with small tweaks taking place right up to the race. The racers animatedly discussed tire pressure. This course has a boulder-strewn section that was sure to be challenging and the correct tire pressure could make the difference between a podium finish and an exhausted ride back to the RV. All racers must hold a current AMA card to race. There is a small 70
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
fee per racer and an entry fee for all attendees who come to enjoy the races. ATV’s run on day 1 and motorcycles run day 2. All races are set up by classes with youth, experience and type of machine being some of the determining factors. Youth races are shorter and Pro racing wraps up the day. These races are physically demanding as your experience level develops and the races become longer and competition more fierce. Once a rider graduates to the pro level sponsorship and pit crews build around the rider and the event takes on a whole new skill level. TRPA had watched hundreds of racers – youngsters through Golden Masters who are 60+ years young. We then settled in for the Pros. Rob and Lori had warned us the night before that the Pros were a whole different breed. The warning didn’t truly prepare us for the speed at which these riders attacked the course. Several of the first photos captured only rooster tails of dirt the racers left behind as they sped past. You know you are witnessing true top-level skill as they lap the track. Pit stops are just as you’d expect – expert pit crews adding fuel and the stop was over before the sound of the RPM’s drop away. #60, Rob Kadich, crested the top of turn 1 at the beginning of his race in first place and we got to see him a few more times as he lapped the course – 2+ hours of hard riding. Racers have a transponder that allows spectators and teams to track the progress and placing. Rob took 2nd place in his class at the Mountaineer Run. North Carolina racer Richard Setzer on a Kawasaki took 1st. Once back at the RV Rob shook his head. He’d taken some advice and changed his tire pressure. Now he wished he’d trusted his instincts. The boulder field would have been much less an obstacle if he’s kept the original pressure. Undaunted, he was already discussing with fellow dirt caked racers what the next race would be like and adjustments they’d consider. At the halfway point of the 2014 season, Rob is close to that

coveted top finish. The GNCC Series continues through October culminating in Round 13 – the AMSOIL Ironman in Crawford Indiana. As avid motorcyclists, TRPA highly recommends checking the GNCC website at www.gnccracing.com and finding a race near you. Pack the kids, your grandparents and favorite uncle. Bring the family dog. Load a cooler with water and snacks. This is what a weekend is all about; Motorcycles, friendly competition, mountaintops and fresh air. The good folks at RacerTV.com broadcast live if you can’t make the events. Jump online and watch the next races and we think you’ll have an idea what this incredible race series brings to motorcycling. Check back in our November issue for the 2014 GNCC season results.

2 1 T M A E T For those of you who ride a cruiser, the world of sport bikes often seems quite foreign. As most of you know, sport bikes are lightweight and extremely fast with optimal maneuverability. Unfortunately, most of the roads we ride do not lend themselves to utilize a sport bike to its potential capabilities. Team T-12 is a nickname for a group of friends (we will get back to how they arrived at this name later) comprised of riders Tim Kennedy #38, Bob Kovach #31, Eric Klein #92 and Roger Weimer #76. They belong to Moto Series, which is an organization that promotes rider education and organized road racing (www.motoseries.com or www.nelsonsledgesracecomplex.com).

Tim and Bob were the first of the four to start their involvement in club road racing some years ago. They both thought they could handle a bike pretty well and could ride pretty fast. However they heard about FASTTRAX (rebranded to Moto Series LLC) and decided to do a track day. They found there was much more they had to learn about riding fast, riding well and most importantly, riding safely. They were hooked and subsequently completed the race school and encouraged their friends to do so. Their home track is Nelson Ledges Road Course, but they travel to Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh International Race Complex) and Indiana (Putnam Park) as well. Tim, a two-time series champion in two different classes, has also competed at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course during AMA Vintage weekends and Daytona International Speedway running in the AHRMA series. Bob previously competed in motocross for about 10 years but claims, “Nothing compares to the adrenaline rush of riding a road course!”

Trackside with Mike Webber
CARIBBEAN CRUISING ( SORT OF)
S
ummer has finally arrived. For me that means lots of nights at the race track with the sprint car and the modified, family time on the boat, track days with the Yamaha and evening cruises on the Triumph. However, more than anything it means it is time for the yearly Weber family vacation. We annually pack up and head south for a diving vacation in the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands are a British territory that is about 360 miles southeast of Key West. During your trip you fly directly over Cuba. The island has a population of 52,000 and is only 22 miles long and 8 miles wide. It is a beautiful Caribbean island with incredible beaches and perfect blue water. It is always a great feeling when the planes wheels touch down at the Oceanside airport in Cayman. It is not such a great feeling when the pilot has a tough time slowing the plane down on a slippery runway made wet by the tropical rains. Our pilot finally got it stopped with about 100 yards to go before we rolled into the water. Hey, we made it.
The Rental Cars –
The British are not known for having a wild sense of humor. However after renting a car in Cayman one may rethink that stereotype. First, they give you a car where the drivers’ controls are on the wrong side of the car. Second, they drive on the other side of road. Finally, instead of stop signs they use roundabouts. The look of sheer terror on the other driver’s faces as you negotiate your first roundabout in the car is priceless. Almost as entertaining is when you try to cross a street and don’t realize the cars are coming from the wrong side of the road.
Stocking Up –
After dropping the luggage at the house we normally head to the grocery and the liquor store. The liquor stores are awesome as they have a variety of rums from distant countries like Trinidad and Cuba that aren’t normally seen in the US. It is hard work sampling as many different ones as we did but someone has to do it. The grocery stores are very nice and equivalent to a medium Kroger. They have the added benefit of lots of international products not available in the US. The restaurants in Cayman are wicked expensive with entrees ranging from $30 to $50. As we normally have at least six people in the 76
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
party everyone just takes turns preparing dinner.
Accommodations
In addition to numerous hotels there are loads of condos and many houses available for weekly rentals. I recommend condos and houses over a hotel. Mom made an incredible find 8 years ago when she tracked down the house that we rent. It sits right on South Sound beach with a beautiful deck overlooking the ocean.
Diving –
After our initial rum tasting party and dinner the tropical air took it toll and it was off to an early bed. This was because it was time to get up early and go scuba diving. Yeh! We have been diving with DNS Diving (www.DNSdiving.com) for many years and they do a great job. The dive leaders on the crew are from all over the world and not only do a great job but are very entertaining. We had Dean from Australia (or New Zealand or something like that) who was quite adept at taking advantage of the Cayman nightlife and keeping track of all the beers available on the island. Based on his reported times of return to his apartment and what time the boat left in the morning it appears he does not need to sleep. Next was Jorge from Columbia who makes awesome jewelry as a hobby. He seemed more interested and knowledgeable on the topic of fish sex than anyone on the island. He talked about it a lot. Everyone felt sorry for his wife. We also had Dusty, part owner and operations manager, who occasionally made it onto the boat. When he did an in depth analysis of how to dive while continuing to chew tobacco would ensue. He had discovered one could switch out the Skoal long cut for the pouches and leave them in for the dive. We concluded that if you left the regular snuff in while diving you may need your auxiliary regulator at an inopportune time. The diving in Cayman is amazing as the ocean bottom gently drops to about 100 feet of depth where an abrupt wall begins dropping down into a trench in the ocean that is 6,000 feet deep. It is cool to take a pebble and swim out over the trench and drop it, knowing it is not going to stop for nearly 6,000 feet. The sea creatures at this depth probably get real tired of rocks landing on their head.

Cruising
Many of the locals get around by a wide variety of scooters and bikes. Every time I have come to the Caymans I have said I am going to find a motorcycle rental shop, get a bike and cruise around the island. Unfortunately this much recreating takes a lot of time and effort and until this year I had not got it done. On this trip I made the time and did extensive research on what was available (depending if you call the time between landing and getting to the terminal extensive). I quickly learned that motorcycles are actually not available to rent on the island. I would have to settle for the next best thing, a scooter. An Oceanside rental shop had a Wolf Brand Blaze 150. I had not ridden a scooter since law school in downtown Washington DC. Fortunately bikes are like race cars and race bikes; I have never met one I didn’t like. After the paperwork was finished the mechanic in a very thick Cayman accent asked if I knew how to start it. My pride was hurt and I blurted out of course I can start it. So he went back into the shop. Fifteen minutes later I tracked him down so he could explain to me you had to hold the brake in to start it. Who knew? Anyway I zipped out of the parking lot and started cruising around the island. It had a short wheel base and small wheels so it was a bit twitchy but overall it was fun to ride. 150cc, however, is underpowered. It handled the residential and downtown streets fine, but had problems on the faster roads. While Cayman does not have a true freeway the stretch from South Sound to Rum Point is about 8 miles of
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
as close to a highway as you can get. I was never clear what the actual speed limit was. I was always trying to figure out which signs were in kilometers or in MPH and had to do the same for the speedometer of whatever I was driving at the moment. I do know I had it pegged but was still getting passed by everyone. While it was smooth and stable going flat out the bike did not have enough power to safely be in that situation. The one drawback to riding in Cayman is the heat. 90 degrees in Cayman makes the equivalent temperature in Cincinnati feel like sweater weather. When you are that close to the equator the sun is particularly strong. Even when I rode for just an hour I would be soaked by the time I returned. Overall Cayman lends itself nicely to scooters. However I would probably gravitate to a bigger motor with a bit more oomph. A Bimini top would not be a bad idea either. I may as well go ahead and start this month’s article with a Disclaimer for my Good Friend and Biker Brother the Editor as well as the TR Syndication. This column is my forum to share my thoughts and experience of Club Life, and I can’t say that my opinions are or are not in line with the Publisher and the Editor, the rest of the TRO Team, the Thunder Roads Network, or anyone else. I say this because things might get a little Nas T in this one.. In fact I’ve had to self-edit this article at least six times so that it can be published. Unless you are living in a cage, I believe everyone is aware of what in MY opinion, is the senseless, cowardly murder of Zachariah “Nas T” Tipton (40) on June 26th at Nippers Beach Grille in Jacksonville FL by an alleged Prospect of a rival “Association of Motor Cycle Enthusiasts”. To call them as a “Club” would be to assume they know the first thing about being a REAL MC, and in MY personal opinion they don’t. According to most media and online reports (I do caution that everything reported in the news has a certain amount of speculation and inaccuracies) that a few members of the “Association” arrived to a bike night being held at Nippers. It has been reported that there had been a feud ongoing with several Real Motorcycle Clubs Nationally, including the MC Club to which Zachariah was a reported member. So on this particular evening it has been reported that the “Association” showed up early with their patches on as an act of defiance to anyone who would imply that they shouldn’t, and they waited knowing that the MC Club that Zachariah was a reported member of also frequent this same bike night. According to media and witness statements, when Zachariah and others arrived a verbal confrontation ensued. The management at Nippers reported that none of the parties involved had actually purchased anything so they were not considered “customers”. It appears to ME that this “Association” didn’t come for the cold ones, music, and a good time, but as is their “M-O” they came to incite a confrontation, then play the victim, as they have done many times across this nation. None the less, the disagreement left the building and continued into the parking lot, where it was reported that the “Association” Prospect allegedly sustained a bloody nose, to which he responded by pulling out a firearm and shooting Zachariah in the head and face a reported 1-4 times. None the less, it killed Zachariah Tipton on the spot. A Biker yes, but also a husband and a father of, I believe, 3 children. To this date no 80
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
charges have been filed against the murderer. Again, in MY Opinion, there is a media misidentification regarding this “Association”. They are not solely an LE (Law Enforcement) affiliation. At least the LE clubs have the wherewithal to put it on their vest and say, “We are what we are”. All of the MC communities I know see this particular “Association” as simply a group of antagonist men and women who show zero respect for the MC lifestyle and code no matter their occupation or background. Their website says something to the degree that they are “Law Abiding” and that they will not be bullied by other REAL MCs. “Clubs” like these are make-believe in MY opinion. They are no more an MC than if I put on a Lab Coat and call myself a doctor. They’ve done nothing to earn their place in the MC society any more than I have gone to medical school. There’s an old saying, to which I’m fairly certain they have never heard because they have no MC history, but it goes “The Man Makes the Patch, The Patch Don’t Make the Man”. Perhaps they all should do some more online research on what the True MC Lifestyle is about. Yes, sometimes things come to knuckles in our world, man up and have the ba!!$ to duke it out instead of shooting people in the face, or sell your barely used rice rockets and go back to checkers, or cricket, or crochet, or whatever you did before you started watching make believe Biker TV shows and bought your first SOA T-shirt at the mall. My personal condolences to the family of Zachariah Tipton for your tragedy. G.B.N.F. To the “Association of Motorcycle Enthusiasts”, As far as this REAL MC Biker is concerned, you are OUT of ORDER! Tabasco Tabasco.TRO@gmail.com Have a different opinion? Let me hear it! Send me an email and I’ll share it with the Editor for possible submission in the magazine if you’d like.

SILENCERS Better than fiction. We’ve all seen the movies where the assassin uses a “silenced firearm” that is whisper quiet. The implication is that “silencers” are something that evil people use to get away with really bad stuff. Reality, however, is much different – and silencers are actually more of a convenience and safety consideration than anything else. According to the Columbus Dispatch, an Ohio State University audiologist reported a 15% or more reduction in volume with a silencer. While hardly a whisper – such a reduction is enough to protect ears from damage but still be loud enough to be heard from several hundred yards away. Any shooter understands that even with earmuffs or plugs, an extended session at the range can still hurt your ears and leave them ringing long after you’re finished shooting. Sometimes this damage can even be permanent. A silencer lessens the impact and allows you to safely shoot without the need of hearing protection, making the experience safer and more enjoyable. For hunters, silencers are even more practical. Being aware of your surroundings is an essential aspect of hunting, forcing most hunters not to use any hearing protection. The result is repeated gunfire close by – which can again cause permanent hearing loss. A silencer will suppress the sound enough to protect your hearing without limiting your ability to track prey and be fully aware of your surroundings. Silencers also limit the recoil and mussel rise after each shot, allowing increased accuracy and quicker target acquisition for follow-up shots. Many also find that they have less of an anticipatory “flinch” while shooting with a silencer – improving their initial accuracy as well.
So, we’ve covered a number of outstanding benefits to shooting with a silencer – the question now is how might we get one and are they legal? (Or maybe those should be in different order..) It turns out that silencers are classified as “NFA Items” and are in fact legal – but have specific guidelines regarding them. For clarification we turned to Alex Hague from Vandalia Range and Armory (VRA) in Vandalia, Ohio. VRA is an active sponsor of Thunder Roads Ohio and we’ve spent enough time in their facility to recognize them as true professionals.
TRO: What are NFA items?
AH: The National Firearms Act (NFA) enacted on June 26, 1934, imposes a statutory excise tax of $200/per item on the manufacture and transfer of certain firearms and mandates the registration of those firearms. NFA items include suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and transferable machine guns (Pre-1986). All transfers of ownership of registered NFA firearms must be done through the federal NFA registry. The NFA also requires that permanent transport of NFA firearms across state lines by the owner must be reported to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF, or BATFE).
TRO: Are NFA items legal to own?
AH: Yes, NFA items are legal to own! It became obvious to VRA that many customers were under the impression that NFA items were not legal to own. These items are in fact legal to own, but do require the necessary paperwork, a $200 tax stamp/ per item, and a waiting period before the customer can leave the store. Vandalia Range and Armory will educate you and inform you on everything that needs to be done to process your paperwork. This will make the process easy, and painless.
TRO: How long is the current wait period to transfer an NFA item?
AH: Currently there are two methods of filing your NFA paperwork 1) Submitting your paperwork as an individual. This will require you’re the signature of your Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO), fingerprints, and passport photos. These applications must be mailed in and are taking approximately 6-8 months to process.
82
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO

2) Submitting your paperwork using an NFA gun trust. Gun trust applications can be filed using the ATF e-forms website and do not require a signature, fingerprints or photos. These applications are currently taking 3-6 months. You must have an NFA trust to submit online. **The ATF eform website has been going under a complete reconstruction since April, but is on track to be back online shortly. Currently all applications will need to be mailed in until the site is up and running.
TRO: What is an NFA Gun Trust and how do I get one?
AH: An NFA gun trust is much like any other trust except its sole focus is on NFA items. The trust is the owner of the items, and provides benefits such as allowing friends and family to use item, protecting loved ones, quicker approvals, and does not require a CLEO signature. You can obtain a gun trust a number of ways, but the most recommended is through a trusted lawyer. This will assure it’s done correctly and efficiently. Contact VRA at 937-387-0485 and we can recommended our Ohio lawyer for obtaining a gun trust.
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
TRO: What are some of the benefits to owning an NFA item?
AH: There are many benefits to NFA items so let’s take the opportunity to break down a few of the benefits. A Suppressor will serve as a “muffler” for your firearm. Suppressors will lessen the noise and muzzle flash of your firearm. This will help shooters protect their hearing, shoot more quietly amongst neighbors, and assist in training. Many customers are also not aware that if they were to use their firearm in a self defense situation that they will most likely lose their hearing due to the gun firing without hearing protection, and also may become blinded by the muzzle flash (Especially in a night time situation). A suppressor will help protect your hearing, and reduce the muzzle flash so that you will be able to keep your senses intact during a self defense situation. In 1986 the National Machine Gun Act was passed which made it illegal to sell any fully automatic weapon that was not registered with the ATF/NFA branch. These items that were registered became known as Transferable NFA Items.

Since there are a limited amount of transferable machine guns in the United States and every year there become less due to old age, natural disasters, poor care, and lack of parts these items have become very valuable. Many of these items will be worth in upwards of $10,000 due to supply and demand. Many of our customers seek these items for investment purposes, and/or to own a legal fully automatic firearm.
TRO: How much does an NFA item cost?
AH: Pricing on NFA items varies much like firearms. We have suppressors that start around $200 and others that are over $2000. SBR’s and Full autos will also vary on brand, condition, etc. All NFA items require a $200 tax stamp per item under the National Firearms Act.
84
THUNDER ROADS® MAGAZINE OHIO
TRO: Who sells NFA items, and where do I buy them?
AH: Currently only 4% of all FFL’s in the United States are selling and transferring NFA items. Vandalia Range and Armory is a full line NFA dealer. VRA wanted to provide our customers with the opportunity to own NFA items if they so desired. Our process has become very streamlined and efficient. We will provide the customer with the necessary paperwork, and knowledge to possess these items. We can also assist in obtaining an NFA Gun trust, or CLEO signature. If you are interested in an NFA item please contact Alex Hague at 937-387-0485, or by email alex@vra-ohio.com to discuss the process. Vandalia Range and Armory currently has a large selection of suppressors and SBR’s in stock. VRA is interested in buying and transferring fully automatic weapons as well. Availability on the full autos will fluctuate with supply and demand.

TRO: Can I try a suppressor out before buying one?
AH: Yes you can! At Vandalia Range and Armory we have suppressors that can be rented and used on our rental guns. This will give anyone the opportunity to try one out first!
TRO: What is Vandalia Range and Armory’s ‘Silent Saturday’?
AH: Every so often Vandalia Range and Armory will host a ‘Silent Saturday’ event to encourage our NFA community to get together. Often times we will have a drawing for those who participate, or we will host a free class on using a suppressor and obtaining a trust. The NFA community is a growing population and we want those who are interested to interact and learn from one another whether it’s their opinion on certain brands, or personal experiences with their NFA items. We want our customers to know that we support NFA items, and we encourage them on the range. Vandalia Range and Armory is a family owned and operated shooting range and firearm retail facility located just north of Dayton, Ohio. Vandalia Range and Armory was established in 2006 by the Hague family whose goals were to provide the general public with a shooting facility that promoted sport, self defense, safety, and learning in a clean and modern environment. In June of 2013 Vandalia Range and Armory was added to the elite list of Five-Star Ranges designated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). There are currently less than 50 Five-Star ranges in the United States.
A day at the Range... On a recent run up 75 from Dayton, I stopped by Vandalia Range and Armory to try out these silencers for myself. Seth, a veteran and member of the VRA staff, took the time to demonstrate how they worked and discuss their effectiveness. “I have two myself and am fascinated by them.” He started off and then we ran through a few magazines. They certainly aren’t “silent”, but they clearly suppress a lot of the recoil and cut down on the sound. We still wore ear protection because we weren’t the only ones on the range – but the shots didn’t seem any louder than chopping wood or loudly clapping your hands. We first fired a Glock 19 (9mm) with a Tyrant 9 Silencer from Advance Armament. Over the years, I’ve gone through thousands of 9mm rounds and the feel of these suppressed rounds was nothing like anything before. The gun barely jumped with minimal recoil. It was still fairly loud, but I could appreciate the difference. Seth advised that 9mm guns were hard to suppress because of the speeds they achieve. He advised using 147 grains so that the silencer could bring the velocity of the rounds below subsconic. We then switched to a H&K USP 45 with an Osprey from Silencerco. These days I’ve been firing a lot of .45’s so I prepared myself for the heavier round out of instinct. The suppressor, though, seemed to have even more of an effect; and I was shocked by the lack of kick. “Yeah, the .45’s are my favorite round to feed through the silencers. The effect on these slower rounds is really noticeable – I think that it cuts the recoil down by at least a third.” Seth explained. As I left VRA that afternoon, I was left thinking of one word of caution for those interested in trying these silencers out. I’d equate the experience to watching a really nice, modern TV or working on a faster computer. The difference is noticeable – and your old reliable laptop just isn’t going to cut it afterwards. The shooting experience was that much more enjoyable and it was easy to see why they are so popular now. The Iron Cowboy

Good Women Are Hard to Find
Two bikers are pulled up at a stop sign. One looks up and sees a funeral procession starting by. He pulls the bike to the side of the road, gets off, stands by its side, takes off his helmet, and bows his head. The procession passes by the intersection and the biker puts on his helmet, gets back on the bike, and starts it up. The other biker comes over and says, “That was touching. I didn’t know you had it in you.” The first biker responds, “Well, I guess it was the right thing to do - after all, I was married to her for 40 years.”
Nigel and Stephen, are keen fishermen and wine drinkers;they are enjoying some night fishing while on holiday, with their wives, in Poitou-Charente, France, last year. Slurping a large Bordeaux Supérieur, Nigel announces, ‘I think I’m going to divorce my wife, she hasn’t spoken to me in eighteen months.’ Stephen downs his glass of the red wine thoughtfully and after a while responds, ‘Think it over a bit more, Nige; women like that are hard to find.
Biker in the Theater
Our manager at the restaurant where I worked was a much beloved, jovial man. But there was one subject you didn’t dare discuss in front of him — his height. Or, should I say, his lack of it. One day, he stormed through the door and announced angrily, “Someone just picked my pocket!” Most of my fellow waitresses and I were speechless, except for the one who blurted out, “How could anyone stoop so low?”
The biker lay sprawled across three entire seats in the posh Amarillo theatre. When the usher came by and noticed this he whispered to the biker, “Sorry, sir, but you’re only allowed one seat.” The biker groaned but didn’t budge. The usher became more impatient. “Sir, if you don’t get up from there, I’m going to have to call the manager. The biker just groaned. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle. In a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the biker, but with no success. Finally, they summoned the police. The cop surveyed the situation briefly then asked, “All right buddy, what’s you’re name?” “Sam,” the biker moaned. Where ya from, Sam?” With pain in his voice Sam replied.... “The balcony up there.”
Cowboy and a Biker on Death Row A cowboy and a biker are on death row, and are to be executed on the same day. The day comes, and they are brought to the gas chamber. The warden asks the cowboy if he has a last request, to which the cowboy replies, “Ah shore do, wardn. Ah’d be mighty grateful if’n yoo’d play ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ fur me bahfore ah hafta go.” “Sure enough, cowboy, we can do that,” says the warden. He turns to the biker, “And you, biker, what’s your last request?” He responded with, “Please kill me first.”

My younger brother, I explained to a friend, had quite a temper as a boy. Our parents had tried extra love, attention and patience on him, with little success. Then, in the middle of one of his tantrums, they simply handed him a shovel, pointed to the backyard and instructed him to go out and dig and not come back until he had control of his anger. “Apparently,” I said, “the therapy worked, because he’s turned out very nicely.” “What does he do for a living?” my friend asked. “He builds in-ground swimming pools.” While I was working at a delicatessen in Sydney, Australia, a woman overheard my accent and asked if I was American. “Lovely!” she exclaimed when I told her that I was. “I’ve been looking for one of your lot. My son is living in the States with his American wife, and she sent me a recipe that calls for half-and-half. Could you tell me, luv, half of wot and half of wot?”
