– Benjamin` Franklin

While December is certainly not considered part of the riding season – at least not in Ohio, it is undoubtedly a time of celebration. It is in fact often referred to as “The Holiday Season” – as people of virtually every faith and even no faith celebrate a time of religious observance and general good will towards all. It is the time of year when it is fashionable to care about others – to hold the door open, donate change to the guy ringing the bell, and help serve meals to those in need. It is a time when everyone celebrates BROTHERHOOD and seems to recognize that we are all in this together. Essentially – it’s like everyone is suddenly a BIKER whether they share our passion for two wheels or not! Everyone knows that motorcyclists are one of the most charitable segments of the population – with hundreds of fundraisers, rides, and benefit events held throughout the year by BIKERS looking to help others. Whether it’s kids, vets, puppies, moms facing cancer, the loss of a father, or even feeding rhinos – we all come together to support those in need. That’s what we do as bikers. As a Christian – the season represents a celebration of the birth of our Savior – the Son of God. For those of Jewish faith, the Festival of Lights – Hanukkah, is celebrated during the same time with the lighting of the candelabra (menorah), traditional foods, games, and gifts. Ancient Romans and naturalist pagans to this day celebrate the time as the Festival of Saturnalia (for Saturn – the Roman Sun God) on the solar equinox, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. And throughout the years, many others have joined in as the celebration marked the halfway point of winter – a break from the doldrums of virtual hibernation.

“Christmas is a season of not only rejoicing, but of reflection.” – Winston Churchill

Regardless of your motivation or where you’re at in life – I urge you to take time to celebrate the season and the sense of

brotherhood that abounds this time of year. It doesn’t matter if you’re blessed to be surrounded by family, suffering a recent loss, or simply find yourself alone – we are all in this together. Like riders out on a long journey, we are all at the mercy of the elements and the challenges of life – BUT we can all find strength and comfort in the company of others along the way. If you are in a position of comfort and wellbeing this year – take the time to help others in a less fortunate spot in their journey. If you’re alone, in pain or more vulnerable this year, you can still celebrate the season by joining in the company of others – passing on a smile or still making the effort to really make a difference to others. You can always help a Brother or Sister in need – or simply another pilgrim on the road. In return you can take comfort and feel the warmth of knowing that YOU made a difference and made the world a better place – even if it’s just in your own little section of road on the journey of life. This year, though, I add on another wish for everyone. I urge you to carry this feeling on into the New Year. There’s no reason the season of Brotherhood and caring for each other has to end. It’s quite the opposite in fact. For us to heal our nation, our community,

even ourselves – we all need to embrace life itself and each other. We need to recognize that we are all on this journey TOGETHER.

To each of you and your families – I’d like to Wish a Very Merry Christmas and Best of Fortunes in the upcoming year.

God Bless – D. A. Smith

CMA “Dude! Did you see that?!” “What?” “2018… it just flew by like a shot in the dark!” Welcome to December everyone! That is just about how most conversations are going right now. What a whirlwind of a year! And what an amazing time we all have had. The events, meeting new people, charting new paths and even revisiting old ones. Regardless of how fast it all went by, I am hoping that your year was filled with mostly good things and only a few troubles and that you were able to enjoy the ride, not just arrive.

We can’t predict our troubles; One story of troubles that comes to mind this time of year, happened a little over 2000 years ago in a little town called Bethlehem. A young couple had journeyed a long way only to find that they had no place to spend the night. So? Pitch a tent somewhere and make do you might say. We’ve all done that a time or two. Except in this story, the young woman was pregnant and about to give birth! By now you know I am talking about Mary and Joseph and the child is Jesus so what’s new? Everyone talks about this at Christmas time, after all, we wouldn’t have Christmas without Jesus. Let me continue… Joseph stepped up and asked the innkeeper for any place they could bed down, and the innkeeper suggested the animal stable in the back of the inn. Using what was available, they made it as comfortable as they could. The animals didn’t even seem to mind watching them prepare for the birth that was about to take place. They all remained calm, cool and collected. At least that’s how I envision it. But were they? I mean, here they are, hundreds of miles away from home, they’re tired and hungry, don’t know a soul around, totally depending on each other and of course, God. A God they had not ever seen. They saw angels, heard voices, had dreams, but they never really saw God. Yet they knew they needed to be where they were, not just because of a census, but because of their senses being led by the Holy Spirit. Their faith in the guidance of their heavenly Father was all they needed at that moment. That’s a lot to take in isn’t it? Have you ever found yourself somewhere wondering why you were there? Have you had a dream that gave you a desire to do something that seemed too far out there, yet made perfect sense? Have you ever been in a hot mess wondering how you were going to get out of it? Or been stranded somewhere not knowing anyone or having a place to spend the night? Maybe you blew a tire or had a breakdown and didn’t know your surroundings well enough

to get assistance. Maybe you have been in a decision-making process for your future, job changes, promotions, moves. Who do you trust? Of course! The same One Joseph trusted...God. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He promised to always be there when we cry out, lead us when we are lost and get us out of trouble when we ask. The key is in the asking, that is sometimes hard to do. I know it is for me, ‘I can figure it out myself!’ is usually my motto, but I have found that the quicker I am to reach out and ask, the quicker the trouble subsides. When I try to think things through without the right guidance, it usually doesn’t come out too pretty. It’s like using a Suzuki manual to fix a Harley ignition switch…can’t be done. However, asking Jesus to be part of your life and using His manual as a guide to decision making can be done, and quite simply really. Just open your heart and ask. It’s the best gift you can give yourself and your family this Christmas! Before I close this out, Rex and I want to take time to mention that this is Jerry Niver’s last year as Ohio State Coordinator. He and his lovely wife, Becky, have served well in this office for the past ten years and we want to wish them well as they move forward in the CMA Ministry. We salute you both and many thanks for your service! Merry Christmas!! Rex and Mary Gilbert CMA Ohio State Coordinators

“Ride to the Sky”, A Dream Ride Destination By now, most of our bikes have been put away for the winter. Even though we won’t be putting our riding gear on until Spring, we can be thinking about gearing up for next seasons riding plans. I took a 12 day “caged in” trip to the New England states in mid November. Even though I spent a week in Vermont and New Hampshire in October, something was calling me back. I spent most of my time in the beautiful state of Vermont. My son, who lives there, says it best. “It’s like Ohio’s Amish country on steroids.” As I meandered through the scenic byways of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine, I was convinced this is a dream ride destination!

Destination New Hampshire. A must do is the annual “Ride to the Sky” to Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. What once began as an auto road has become a motorcycle riders dream. First opening in 1861, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is America’s oldest man-made attraction, but it wasn’t always opened to motorized vehicles. For the first 40 years the main mode of transportation was horse-drawn mountain wagons. In 1899 the first motorized vehicle set its wheels on the pavement and the rest is history. Today, there are 2 days set aside for motorcycles to have the road all to themselves. The roar of bikes can be heard throughout the valleys as motorcycles head to Mt. Washington to experience their own piece of history. Even though the actual distance is no more than 45 minutes, there are miles of backroad routes and small towns to explore. You’ll experience four climate zones, panoramic views and reach the highest peak in the Northeast. There is a toll booth as you enter the park. If you arrive at the booth before 10:00 A.M., passengers can ride at no charge. New Hampshire does not require motorcyclists to wear safety helmets. The 2019 dates are June 10 and 13. 1 Mt. Keep the anticipation of the riding season alive by taking refresher courses. Experience can be a good teacher, but continuing education can prepare a rider for the least expected set of circumstances. With cell phone use on the rise and distracted drivers, it is only a matter of time till your skills will be put to the test. Even in an emergency we don’t have time to think, and we need to react based on our training. Are you confident enough to swerve around a car door that opens suddenly or avoid an obstacle on the road? Do yourself and others a favor by looking into motorcycle safety courses near you. TE!

2019 BIKE SHOWS

Work has already begun on next year’s shows – both for the summer and some possible early season shows. We may also be adding a few more “winter shows” to get people going during the cold weather months. Our plan is to add at least 6-10 new shows to the series, adding additional dates in the Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland markets while expanding to several new cities as well. We will be adding a few early season shows leading up to the Championship Show in Sandusky during Ohio Bike Week. These will be the last chance for folks to qualify for the Championship Invitations and allow a last minute tuneup before competing for the big prize money. With a brief respite for the holidays in December, there’s time to prepare for the upcoming Winter shows and then the kickoff of the Spring BIKE SHOWS in May! Here’s the lowdown on the upcoming feature shows -

Easyriders Bike Show

January 5, 2019 Duke Energy Center, Cincinnati For 2019, the folks at Easyriders Events decided to change things up and rearrange their schedule. Instead of hosting the Columbus show at the end of the series – they moved it up and re-located the show to Cincinnati. The Duke Energy Center is a great location and offers more flexibility for Bike Show exhibitors. We’ve done a number of shows there over the years and it’s always been a great venue to work with. For those participating in the show, you’ll want to go online at EasyridersEvents. com to get your registration information. Registration is free to exhibit your bike(s), but you’ll need to get your own wristbands to attend the show.

Piston Power Show

March 15-17, 2019 I-X Center, Cleveland

The Piston Power Show has undergone a number of changes the last several years, adapting the ISCA Judging and changing up the Awards and Prizes. Thunder Roads Ohio, though, will still be hosting a Thunder Zone Exhibit area for motorcycles and presenting the People’s Choice Award for favorite overall bike at the show. Series Exhibitors interested in participating in the Piston Power Show and exhibiting in the Thunder Zone motorcycle area should email

us at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

and include photos of the motorcycle(s) you’d like to bring. Priority will be given to those already placing or winning at TRO Bike Show Series events previously, but consideration will be given to all submitted. This show will now be a qualifier for the TRO Championship Show held at Ohio Bike Week.

If you’d like to recommend a show location or have a venue you could host a show at yourself, please email us at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com as soon as possible. Over the last several years, the Iron Cowboy Road Crew has fine tuned things fairly well and the shows are easy to host. We bring in everything needed for the Bike Show and can assist with other aspects as well – everything from vendors and music, to sponsors and operational planning. Venues just need to play host to all the folks attending over the 3-6 hours that we are running things. We take care of everything else! For Bike Show Updates and Results – as well as THOUSANDS OF PICTURES, visit our facebook page at www.facebook. com/ThunderRoadsOhio

Email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com TODAY to reserve your spot with TRO for the Piston Power Show or Ohio Bike Week!

The Holiday Season is a time of sharing and the giving of gifts between friends and family. If you have riders on your list, we would like to offer some suggestions for unique and practical gifts that any rider might appreciate. The following pages are a mix of items and services offered by Thunder Roads Ohio and some of our partners.

It’s also worth mentioning that you might consider getting a little something for your “Iron Steed” as well. People think nothing of getting gifts for dogs and cats – so why not for your bike? And as luck would have it, we might have a few suggestions for stuff your bike would love as well!

Some of our suggestions are practical items that a rider might not consider or just over look. An AMA or ABATE Membership, for instance, is something that any biker or enthusiast will appreciate but might not get themselves. Helmets, good gloves, or protective riding boots are other items that riders can always use – but often neglect for themselves.

ThunderRoadsOhio.com Quality Boots

Far too often we scrimp on the little things that can really make a difference in our lives. And there’s probably no better example of that than when it comes to footwear – especially in terms of riding boots. Proper, comfortable riding boots can make all the difference after a long day of riding, working, or simply walking. Far too often, though, we scrimp on boots refusing to spend a few more dollars for a step up in quality that might transform our entire day. For something classy – nothing jazzes up an outfit like a nice pair of exotic boots. For ladies or men, stylish cowboy boots can transform your t-shirt and jeans outfit into the stuff of rockstars. When it comes to boots – there’s one stop that immediately comes to mind and that’s the Avon Boot Shop. Avon Boot is one of the coolest stops I know when it comes to finding cool practical stuff for riders. From quality leathers to an endless array of boots - Avon Boot is a great place to shop. For the guys, not only do they have boots - they just happen to have a nice selection of very stylish purses and other lady stuff for that special gift. You can get something all pretty and lady like, without having to go into one of those shops that will leave you smelling like something dainty by the time you walk out the door. Plus, they have a GREAT staff that is extremely helpful – always a HUGE BONUS!

The Z1R Duke

A flannel shirt for riding and carrying!

We are big fans of the Z1R line of clothing and riding gear. We’ve found just about everything we tried to be comfortable, well made, and reasonably priced. It’s also clear that these are products made for riders – practically designed to meet the needs of folks hitting the road. The Duke flannel shirt is no exception. It’s a heavy flannel shirt that maintains nice crisp lines even when you’ve been wearing it for hours – or days on end. It has a snap down collar – which makes it more practical to ride with; and a full mesh liner to keep things more comfortable and limit moisture build up. The front has both heavy snaps on the outside and a thick quality zipper hidden below to keep things closed up. Up top it has two exterior and one interior chest pockets. Down low it features two interior concealed carry pockets with elastic straps to keep things from moving around.

EDITORS REVIEW: “A great quality flannel shirt designed for riding. The concealed carry pockets are nicely designed – they and the other pockets allow for plenty of storage for other items as well.” “It’s not a taper design so most will find it to be a comfortable fit, but I’d recommend bumping up a size - especially if you’re going to be carrying with it.” “Great gift that will be well appreciated by any rider!” Thick 100% cotton flannel chasis Full length polyester mesh liner wicks moisture Metal snap & concealed zipper front closure Extended length jacket tail Expanded shoulder gussets for increased mobility Two interior concealed carry pockets Two exterior and one interior chest pocket

Locking Oil Cap

I think it's safe to say most of us take pride in caring for our motorcycles. Unfortunately, there are individuals out there who have no regard for other people's property, and will potentially do something to cause harm or loss. This is why many motorcycles have alarm systems, locking gas caps, steering locks, ect.. One area that often gets overlooked is the oil cap. Think of how accessible and easy it would be for someone to put something in your oil. It's the lifeblood of your engine. Sadly, there are people out there that think about doing something like that, and do it. How can you protect your oil from someone contaminating it? A locking oil cap is the answer. The Guardian Oil Protector™ makes a simple yet very functional locking oil cap for most bikes. Installation is a simple couple minute process. If you have a dipstick, remove it from your old cap. The new cap unthreads to allow for installation of the dipstick. Then put the cap on like normal, and lock. The kit comes with installation instructions, locking cap, and two keys. It provides peace of mind, taking the worry away that no one but you can access the oil tank. Walt Snider, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor For the rider in your life, a Guardian Locking Oil Lock makes the perfect gift. A little extra piece of mind that they may not think of themselves. Visit them online at www.KBents.com to check out their locking oil caps! Great as a gift or for yourself!

Dirty Girl Soap Company All natural soaps and products – locally made for riders! This past year we ran into the Dirty Girl Soap Company at a few events and decided to check them out and try a few of their products. Courtney and Jesse started making soaps and personal care products after losing Jesse’s father to cancer – which prompted them to look into more holistic living. They were also avid riders and wanted to make sure that what they made stood up to their long-distance rides. After sharing their homemade soaps with friends and family, the response was overwhelming and they decided to launch the Dirty Girl Soap Company. We’ve tried a few of their products and strongly recommend them both as unique gifts – but also as real products that work.

“Shop Rat is a serious soap that gets the job done. It has a great citrus scent that I enjoyed, but has pumice and real walnut shells that get the job done! It cut through the grease and grime without any chemicals that are probably scarier than the stuff that you’re washing off! Highly recommend!” EDITOR’S CHOICE In addition to the soaps and body products, they also have a very cool 2018 Pin-Up Calendar which is sponsored by our friends over at South East Harley-Davidson!

You can find the Dirty Girl Soap Company online at DgSoapCo.com or on facebook. TRO READER SPECIAL!

TRO PRODUCT REVIEW

These gloves and other Z1R products are available at these recommended shops and other Parts Unlimited / Drag Specialties Dealers. You can also go online to www.Z1R.com

Z1R Recoil Gloves

It seems as though all the gloves I have fall into one of two categories. Heavy insulated gloves that are cumbersome and difficult to ride with, or light weight leather gloves that offer little protection from the elements. It’s a frustrating choice that often leaves me simply punting and going with the heavier mechanics gloves. It seemed as though they were the closest thing I could find that offered some protection, but were practical to ride with as well. I then had the opportunity to try on a pair of Z1R Recoil gloves and the mechanics gloves have been back in the tool box ever since.

Iron Pony Motorsports 5436 Westerville Rd Westerville OH 43081 Sizes XS-3XL. Suggested Retail $54.95-$59.95.

Cycle Specialties 6175 Harrison Ave Cincinnati, OH 45247 (513) 574-7878

The Z1R Recoil is a unique glove that offers great protection from the road and elements – yet still practical to ride with. It features an extended gauntlet that allows you to seal up the end of your sleeves on the outside, or can be worn under your jacket if you prefer.

The SENA 20S EVO It will change the way you ride.

As you ride with different folks, on different styles of bikes, and push the envelope in terms of your riding experience – you are going to come across different things that change the entire way you ride. I scoffed for years at the idea of riding with a radio on my bike. Why would I ever want that? I listened to the road and wind. I rode that way for more than 15 years. Then I found myself on a touring bike with a complete sound system – and I gotta admit that I liked it. I’ve had similar experiences with heated grips and a number of other “riding advances” that I never ever thought I would want. And now I will add a Bluetooth headset to that list. In particular – the SENA 20S EVO.

After in-depth discussion with the folks at Iron Pony and our resident expert on touring equipment – Norm Kern, MSTA Editor and TRO Sport Touring Contributor; I decided to try a SENA 20S EVO system when I joined Norm for the MSTA Fly-By Rally this Fall. The headset installed easily onto my helmet, in fact most modern helmets are designed to accommodate Bluetooth headsets – if they don’t already have them integrated into the helmet. Regardless, the main mount goes over the bottom edge of the helmet with wired speakers to place inside the helmet and a boom mic that extends out towards your mouth. I ride with a full face / modular helmet (HJC) and it was very comfortable – barely knew it was there. While riding – it changed the entire experience by allowing me to effortlessly communicate with those I was riding with. And I’m not just talking about the person riding behind me. Even if Norm had hightailed it over the horizon – leaving us in the dust – we could still carry on a conversation as though he was sitting next to me having a pint at the corner pub. The system was amazingly clear and the voice activated system seemed flawless. Even more incredible was the units ability to play music from my phone – and then seamlessly integrate the conversation that I was having with other riders. 44

It’s also worth mentioning that the units are designed to be used by Neanderthals with gloves on – without any extensive tech abilities. You literally just have push a button – or even shake the units – for them to link with other units and their riders. It was an entirely new experience riding while talking with other riders – on other motorcycles possibly separated by miles across the group. We were able to have technical discussion on our riding approaches, give warning on hazards on the road, and plan our route / stops without having to actually stop. We will include a more extensive review of the system and all of it’s features in

next month’s magazine – but I wanted to make sure that I included a mention in this month’s Gift Guide. The SENA 20s

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

EVO is a proven system with significant updates – really making it the gold standard for many serious riders. A single unit retails for approx.. $300 – while a combo package with two units sells for approx.. $550 online at www.IronPony. com You might even find better deals over the holidays. They aren’t cheap – but I can’t think of anything else that would impact your riding experience as much if you ride with others, or simply enjoy listening to music or talking on your phone while riding. Farkles

Definition of Farkle: (noun) popular sport touring rider term for motorcycle accessory. When I bought a used Honda ST1100 around 2001, farkle was a common term in Honda ST Owners Club (STOC) discussions. Although some claim it’s an acronym for “Fancy Accessory Really Kool Likely Expensive,” most explain it simply as a contraction of the words function and sparkle.

I carry in the tank bag. That required some custom design and machining. Special nuts that can be tightened with the allen wrench took care of the inner mount on the clutch and brake lever pivots. The clamping assembly for the bar ends was made so that the groove for the shields collapses and disappears when the shields are removed.

It’s no accident that the function part of the term comes first. Farkles that sport touring riders put on their bikes are chosen to improve comfort, performance, reliability etc. If they improve appearance, that is a bonus, but not a requirement. My Yamaha FJR ES doesn’t draw much attention at motorcycle gatherings, despite having many farkles. That’s fine- they were not installed to impress other riders- they were done to please me. A complete list is beyond the scope of this article, so I’ll just list the main categories along with a few detailed examples.

Physical Comfort is top priority! Less comfort means less riding for me. The centerpiece of my comfort plan is the Russell DayLong Saddle- it’s not very pretty, but it lets me ride a thousand or more miles in a day with zero discomfort. The second piece of the comfort puzzle is an MV Motorrad handlebar plate that shifts the relatively low and short FJR handlebars back about 1-1/2” and almost 1” higher. This allows me to sit up straighter, bend my elbows a bit and relax my bad shoulder. Another comfort item is a windscreen that’s 4-1/2” taller than stock. Using the FJR’s seven inches of electric adjustability, it provides weather and wind protection in the raised position, yet plenty of ventilation in the low position. Sport touring bikes don’t have big wide windshields and fairings, so the rider’s hands are more exposed to the elements. I added hand shields to protect my hands from cold and rain. They are from a Suzuki V-Strom and are easy to adapt, but I wanted a mounting system that enabled them to be removed or replaced in a minute or two using a single allen wrench 46 46

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

Safety- The FJR comes with ABS brakes, traction control and a lot of other safety features, but I like additional brake lights to

alert traffic behind. Skene lights 1812-07.jpg are extremely bright red LED brake light modules that flash several times before staying on continuously, getting the attention of drivers behind you. Crash/Tipover Protection- I only had my previous FJR for a few months when some cager knocked it over while I was inside registering at a hotel. The $3000 in damage was mostly cosmetic other than a broken mirror, which was a distraction for the rest of my trip. That experience got me working on a strategy to minimize expensive damage from future tipovers by protecting the things that commonly get broken. In addition to canyon cages and saddlebag guards, I used replacement mirrors that fold up instead of breaking and added easily replaced rubber pads and trim pieces that protect expensive body parts. For example, I added rubber pads on the top THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

of the saddlebag lids, so my boot doesn’t scratch them when getting on and off the bike. If the bike tips over, the saddlebag guard prevents the saddlebag lid from being broken, but the upper side of the bag can still contact the ground and get scratched. Refinishing a lid costs $250-300. By adding two plastic trim strips, they get scratched but the paint on the lid is saved. Repair is easy- just peel off the damaged trim strips and stick replacements on- in a couple of minutes the saddlebags are good as new for about $10 in material cost. Luggage/Storage- A tank bag makes it easy to get to a cloth to clean the face shield, carry small items and stow electronic gadgets to carry inside at lunch stops.

Smartphone handlebar mount- RAM X-mount makes it easy to mount your phone on the handlebar. I like it on the right-hand side, as I don’t fiddle with it much. (I can take the occasional phone call through a Bluetooth headset.) It’s mounted high to clear the tank bag when turning and can be rotated to shoot photos or video in landscape mode. When on the interstates, I often run Waze for traffic information. It keeps the screen on continuously and the brightness must be high to see it on a sunny day, so a cord that connects to a bike-powered USB jack is essential. Valentine One Radar detector- Many will question whether a radar detector is of any use on a bike today, which will be the subject of a future article. Regardless, it’s of no value if you can’t hear it beep so mine is interfaced into the Bluetooth audio system. GPS- The most valuable electronic gadget on my bike is the Garmin Zumo590 GPS. Not only does it provide maps and routing, it has an MP3 player with hundreds of hours of music, shows weather radar, traffic conditions with estimated delays and alternate routes. You can even look at traffic cameras along the interstate to see if traffic is flowing. It’s an amazing integrated information system- a worthy subject for a several articles.

Saddlebags with side-opening lids present challenges with stuff falling out when you open them, so I installed nets in the lids and a flexible aluminum panel in the inside part of the bag. I can stack up rain and heated gear, Rain-X, bungee cords, electric tire pump etc. behind the panel so it doesn’t fall out, yet I can bend the panel

Digital VoltmeterLots of bikes have weak charging systems. A digital voltmeter mounted where you can easily check it while riding is good for peace of mind and can give you early warning if there is a problem.

This completes the first year of Sport Touring Corner. Thank you for your kindness and support. Let’s make the 2019 riding season even better than this year!

outward to easily reach the bag contents. The panel attaches to the floor of the bag with velcro so it’s easy to remove it if not needed. Electronic Gadgets are the most popular sport touring farkles. Some of them have a lot of functions and installation tricks that will be subjects of future articles. For now, I’ll just list them with a few comments.

The United States vs The Mongols MC

If you are a member of ANY type of organized club, MC or otherwise, and aren’t aware of this legal case, you should be. The United States Government has renewed its attempt to sue the Mongols MC, to take away their individual rights to be a member of their club, and to wear any logo, due the actions of a few. I suggest you google the case docket. The original case was dismissed in 2015, but the government filed an appeal to re-file the case in 2016, and that appeal has been approved and now once again the government is trying take away US citizens rights to organize in a free society. Whether you love or hate the Mongols MC isn’t relevant. What’s relevant is the overreaching federal governments attempt to take away or destroy any organization that they don’t agree with. Even members who have never been convicted of a crime. This is a very slippery slope. The government contends that since there have been members associated with the Mongols MC who have been convicted of committing crimes, then ALL members are guilty. This is literally the most hypocritical case in recent US history. There are literally hundreds of law enforcement members who are convicted of crimes every year in the US. So, in using their logic, all members of the FOP (Fraternal 52

Order of Police) must ALL be culpable in the crimes of the few? Law Enforcement by their own definition is now a criminal organization. How will that go for the catholic church? There are thousands of cases, of decades of pedophile child abuse, even acknowledged by the Pope himself. Will the government go after the catholic church next declaring it a criminal organization, and seize its assets and crosses right off the walls? This case has never ending implications should the government ever win it. They will set a precedence that any organized group of people, that the government deems inappropriate could be sued, arrested, and disbanded simply for associating with one another in a common cause. A federal court rejected the initial trademark forfeiture case and ordered the Justice Department to pay $253,206 in

legal fees to the attorneys who challenged it. Prosecutors returned with a new indictment against the Mongols MC, described as a distinct legal entity. The US government has become the enemy of its citizens in so many cases across this nation. It’s disgusting and in direct opposition of our fore fathers who organized this country against a tyrannical British government. We the people have now become victims of the same tyrannical government we opposed. And it’s out of control. Pay attention to the big picture. If you can offer support to defend our rights and freedoms, it is your obligation as a citizen of this great nation to do so. Because as Paul Revere is credited with saying… “The Red Coats Are Coming… Again.” Keep it REAL! My Road Name is Tabasco, and I approve this message!

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT House Bill 228 passes Ohio House – Modernizing Concealed Carry HB 228 (Fix Burden of Proof/ Concealed Carry Modernization), sponsored by Representatives Terry Johnson (R-McDermott) and Sarah LaTourette (R-Chesterland) has passed out of the Ohio House by a vote of 65 to 32.

Rep. Johnson thanked those who worked directly with legislators over the last two years to pass the bill, including Buckeye Firearms Association, Ohioans for Concealed Carry, BFA Board President Jim Irvine, the NRA, and NRA and BFA Board Members Sean Maloney and Linda Walker. Before it was passed, the House defeated an attempt by a Democrat representative to amend the bill to insert gun control provisions desired by Governor John Kasich (R). The concealed carry modernization bill has been debated extensively for over a year, and key provisions have been discussed for almost eight years in the legislature. If enacted, the bill would: Correct Ohio law on burden of proof. Currently the Federal Government, U.S. territories, and 49 states have the burden of proving someone committed a crime to convict them and deny them their rights. The same is true in Ohio, in almost every situation. This change simply makes Ohio like every other state, and prosecution of someone who wrongly claims self-defense like every other criminal prosecution. Innocent until proven guilty. Simple stuff and the most important aspect of this bill. Eliminate “duty to retreat” from some sections of code. In Ohio and many other states, a person attacked in their home or car may defend their life. But in Ohio there are “duties” of the crime victim if they are in their own driveway between their home and car. Eliminating the “duty to retreat” will make the standard for defending one’s life uniform and not dependent on where the victim happens to be when they are attacked. It is important to note that it does not change the standard of 54 54

what constitutes a deadly force threat or what constitutes a legal use of deadly force in self-defense or defense of another. Add a requirement that hands must be in plain sight “unless impractical” for license holders during an official stop by police. There are times when complying with officer’s instructions and the law are impossible to do at the same time. Eliminate the requirement of places that allow concealed carry to post signs prohibiting concealed carry. Yes, current law is that insane. Another fix that everyone should support. Prohibit public housing from denying tenants their right to lawfully-possessed firearms. Provide for a safe harbor for a spouse or other unlicensed individual driving a car that another person has left a firearm in. Eliminate the requirement for license holders to carry a second form of ID while in possession of a firearm. Increase penalties for people illegally buying a gun to sell to a prohibited person. Modernize Ohio’s definition of a shotgun to match Federal law and allow for possession of guns that are specifically approved by BATFE (such as the Mossberg Shockwave).

It has taken almost 23 months to get half way through the process. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it will need committee hearings, a committee vote, a full Senate floor vote. Then, if there are any changes it will go back to the House for a concurrence vote before moving on to the Governor. Any bills not enacted before the end of the year die and the entire process must start over again. There is a lot of work to be done, but we are optimistic that a majority of the legislators see the need to make these common-sense changes to Ohio law. Our opponents will try to delay, distract, and confuse knowing that our timeline is tight, and the margin of error is very small. We are grateful to our members and supporters who by speaking with one clear voice help legislators see through the nonsense resistance to move this important legislation. We thank Speaker Smith for his leadership, Chairwoman Kristina Roegner and members of the House Federalism and Interstate Relations Committee, and every Representative who voted to pass this important legislation. We look forward to working with the Ohio Senate and interested parties to further review this legislation and answer questions about it. Stay tuned to Buckeye Firearms Association for updates as the legislative process proceeds.

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. www.buckeyefirearms.org

Free CCW Licenses for Military Members

By Jim Irvine, BuckeyeFirearms.org Senate Bill 81, sponsored by Senator Terhar (R-8), was signed into law in August and became effective November 5, 2018. SB 81 specifies that active duty military and retired and honorably discharged veterans will have their fees waived for initial and renewed Concealed Handgun Licenses (CHLs).

THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

NOTE: This does NOT mean military members can carry concealed without a license. You must still go through the same licensing process, and your fee will be $0. Veterans are reminded that many sheriff offices still require applicants to bring an approved passport size photograph with their completed application. Sheriffs also vary greatly in the forms of payment they accept. Check with your sheriff’s office to follow their particular rules. Ohio residents may apply for a CHL in the county of residence, or any adjoining county. Non-residents may apply in the county they work in, or adjacent counties. There is a statewide cap of $1,500,000 per year for this benefit. This equates to 19,480 to 30,000 licenses depending on the mix of people obtaining or renewing their CHL. (Temporary licenses not considered.) Last year, there were 131,345 licenses issued. Military members would need to exceed 15 - 23% of all licenses for the state to reach the cap. Military members’ training does not expire, so their DD-214 or a statement of accepted training satisfies the

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

requirement for proof of training (minimum 8 hours, including a minimum of 2 hours range time). The requirement for “competency training” was removed years ago, so anyone with an expired license can renew their CHL using their expired license as proof of training. Military members and veterans are cautioned to review the Attorney General book on concealed carry and use of deadly force. The “rules of engagement” are much different in the military than under Ohio law. In cases of self-defense, Ohio law is different than every other state, and the United States. Hopefully that can be addressed in the coming weeks. See HB 228. Many of our military members have paid for our freedoms with their lives. Those who are still active, retired, or honorably discharged should not have to pay for a license to exercise their God-given right to self-defense. Our veterans thank Senator Terhar, Senate President Obhof, Speaker Smith and all members who voted for this legislation. Jim Irvine is Buckeye Firearms Association Chairman, recipient of the NRA-ILA’s 2011 Jay M. Littlefield Volunteer of the Year Award and CCRKBA’s 2012 Gun Rights Defender of the Year Award.

RECIPES

Chocolate Peppermint Brittle

Nutty Toffee Apple Cookies Makes 2 dozen 1 ⅓ cup Flour ½ cup Graham cracker crumbs 1 tsp Baking powder ¼ tsp Ssalt ½ tsp Ground cinnamon ¼ tsp Ground nutmeg ¼ tsp Ground cloves ½ cup Butter ½ cup Brown sugar ¼ cup Sugar 1 Egg 1 tsp Vanilla ¾ cup Apples, finely diced ½ cup Toffee baking bits ½ cup Pecans In a bowl, mix together flour, crumbs, baking powder, salt, and spices, set aside. With a hand mixer (or by hand), cream butter, brown sugar and white sugar in a large bowl until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Add flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix until just combined. Stir in the apple, toffee bits, and nuts by hand. Roll dough into 1 inch balls and place about 2 inches apart on a baking sheet to allow for expansion during baking. Bake at 350° for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to wire rack to cool.

4 sticks butter (cut into pieces) 2 cups sugar ¼ tsp salt 2 cups roasted nuts, chopped 2 cups bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped ½ cup crushed candy canes Prepare a rimmed baking sheet with a LOT of butter In a heavy metal saucepan (4 to 5 quarts), over med-high heat, melt together the butter, sugar, and salt, whisking until smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly for 10 to 20 more minutes, until the mixture is a deep golden color (the hard-crack stage, or 300 degrees on a candy thermometer). Watch the mixture carefully during the last few minutes and stir thoroughly to prevent the mixture from burning. Immediately stir in the chopped nuts, then carefully pour the hot toffee into the center of the greased baking sheet. Using metal spatula, smooth the toffee flat until it’s about ½-inch thick. Let the toffee cool for a minute or two, then sprinkle the chopped chocolate (or chocolate chips) over the surface of the toffee (this will melt really quickly) Once melted spread the chocolate evenly across the toffee with the spatula. Let cool for about 5-7 minutes or so, then dust the chocolate with the crushed candy canes Place the tray of toffee in the freezer and freeze until the chocolate layer is firm, about 30 minutes. Remove from freezer and break toffee into pieces. Layer between sheets of parchment paper and store in an airtight container at room temperature; the toffee will keep for about two weeks

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND

Lee, A seven-year-old boy, was asked to say thanks for the Christmas dinner. The family members bowed their heads in expectation. Lee began his prayer, thanking God for his Mommy, Daddy, brothers, sister, Grandma, and all his aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the stuffing, the Christmas pudding, even the cranberry sauce. Then lee paused, and everyone waited ... and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, “If I thank God for the Brussels sprouts, won’t he know that I’m lying?” On the Sunday before Christmas Reverend Billy Graham was walking down Highland street in Mt Holly, North Carolina on his way to see a parishioner. However, he wanted to post a parcel urgently so he asked a young boy where he could find the post office. When the boy had directed him, Reverend Graham thanked him and said, ‘If you’ll come to the Church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven.’ The boy replied, ‘I think I’ll give your sermon a miss. If you don’t even know your way to the post office, you definitely won’t be able to lead me to heaven!’

Darren remembers accompanying his father out shopping in the toy department of Hamleys one Christmas Eve. Dad said, ‘What a marvellous train set. I’ll buy it.’ The girl behind the counter looked pleased and murmured, ‘Great, I’m sure your son will really love it.’Dad replied with a glint in his eye, ‘Maybe you’re right. In that case I’ll take two.’ Just before Christmas, two brothers were spending the night at their Grandma’s house. At bed time, they knelt down to say their prayers. As they closed their eyes, one boy said in a loud voice, “Dear Lord, please ask Santa Claus to bring me a Wii, a telescope and a new bike.” His older brother said, “Why are you shouting? God isn’t deaf.” “I know,” said his brother, “but Grandma is”.
