FROM THE PUBLISHER To me, May is the real start of the Ohio riding season – and it’s undoubtedly one of our busiest months of the year. Maybe it’s the pent-up desire to get out and ride from winter and a roller coaster spring – that was always tempting us with clear skies and deceptively “warm” 50-degree days only to have it snow the next day! Maybe it’s the abundance of great events – from Bike Nights kicking off and Bike Blessings to the Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event – OHIO BIKE WEEK! Whatever the reason – May is when we hit the road and reacquaint ourselves with our bikes and our brothers and sisters from the road that we haven’t seen since last year! This month’s issue is jam packed with HUNDREDS of events and ride stops, an almost endless selection of destinations from one corner of the state to the other. We officially kick off a new year of our Buckeye Thunder Run – one of the Nation’s Largest Ride Programs with THOUSANDS of riders participating! This year we offer digital / social media check-ins at Ride Stops and events across the Midwest. And each check-in offers you the chance to win GREAT prizes, including NEW MOTORCYCLES, concert tickets, rally tickets, motorcycle gear, and an almost endless array of cool swag! We do all of this in an effort to not just make a difference in our community – but to specifically help support the riding community as well. Great events put on by good folks helping those in need – that’s what it’s all about. And very little of this could be done without the support of local businesses and corporate sponsors that have made a similar commitment to ours. They have chosen to invest in the riding community – not only for the specific charities supported by the rides and other events – but with the belief that more events and opportunities for riders to get together is good for business. They have a business to run – and they have plenty of other options for advertising and promotion. Let’s Keep Track of the Miles! Every month we feature a calendar in the middle of the magazine which highlights motorcycle events across the state – especially the ones that TRO will be at. This month though, we added something new to the calendar – a place to enter your miles each month! We’d like to invite everyone to simply write down their miles at the start of each month there on the calendar. Of course, you’re all saving your Thunder Roads mags each month! So, you’ll soon have an easy record of how many miles you’ve ridden each month. It’s so easy to lose track of your days, weeks, and even months – and the next thing you know the snow is flying again! So – we’re kinda considering this a reminder that you need to get out and ride. And if you find yourself writing down a ZERO in terms of miles ridden or something way below 100 – you need to look over the calendar and circle the events that you’re going to ride to!

STATE BREWERY TOUR With well over 160 micro and regional breweries flourishing across Ohio – clearly craft beer is a popular craze and one that many riders enjoy. With this in mind, we will be introducing a State Brewery Tour in 2019. In each issue of the magazine we will be profiling at least one brewery, tasting a few brews, and highlighting various recommended “beer stops” across Ohio. We will be developing a digital brewery map on our website and linking to recommended breweries as Ride Stops. Riders will be able to share their reviews and comments on the stops and brews – as well as check-in for a chance to win cool prizes… including a new motorcycle! The LARGEST SHOWCASE of the motorcycle and powersports industry in North America returns to COLUMBUS in September – and you DON’T want to miss this! This is the industry show – where the manufacturers will come to present their newest and coolest to dealers and shops from across the country. In fact, the first two days of the show are industry only; but then they open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. The show is presented by the Motorcycle Industry Council and promises to be more “experiential than ever” – with the entire show designed to allow visitors to immerse themselves in the different segments of the powersports industry. The manufacturers and various show exhibits will highlight many of the most exciting options available for today’s riders with the newest technology and features. And the shows not limited to the indoor exhibits! AIMExpo Outdoors will allow visitors to take two-wheel test rides as well as a new four-wheel dirt experience designed to introduce both dealers and consumers to the newest in off-road powersports vehicles. Last time the AIMExpo came to Columbus, they had limited the demo area to road riding – but I had been to some of the earlier

shows in Orlando where they had the dirt tracks laid out, and it was pretty cool. If you’re in the business or just an enthusiast – you are not going to want to miss this show. I went down to Orlando several years in a row to attend the show there, but now we’re fortunate enough to host North America’s LARGEST Powersports show right here in OHIO! As always, we aren’t just coming to take a few pictures and hit the courtesy lunch buffet – we are coming to Rock n’ Roll! From veteran’s clubs to animal advocacy riders – there’s something for just about everyone. It’s a crazy varied group, and Thunder Roads Ohio serves them all. Thunder Roads Ohio is a grassroots organization that works with local representatives to help cover and serve the motorcycle community. We actively support hundreds of local charity events and organizations throughout the state in a variety of capacities. We work with riding organizations of all types – from traditional clubs to metric street riders. We accomplish this by not trying to be anything we aren’t. We treat established clubs with the respect that they deserve and help the new folks navigate the waters in some cases. Depending upon what you’re interested in doing, little to no experience is necessary. Obviously, if you’re interested in being a photographer – you need to be comfortable behind a camera. However, you don’t have to be a professional. If you enjoy sharing a story from time to time, you might consider writing for the magazine. An English degree and professional credentials aren’t required. This is a grassroots magazine, and we want a variety of voices to be heard. If you’re interested in becoming a rep and possibly making a living with Thunder Roads, you need to be organized and comfortable talking with folks. You don’t have to be a slick sales person; that’s not how we work. The magazine and what we have to offer sells itself. Reps simply serve as the Tour Guides, helping to develop the message and guide folks through the process. We have a lot to offer, and the reps allow us to connect with everyone at the local level. We are a family of good folks from a variety of different backgrounds. We have different interests and skills – but we all enjoy being an active part of the riding community. TRO allows us to actively contribute to this community – helping it grow and sharing the stories we’re a part of. The first step is to email some information about yourself. Hi Friends, The riding season is off and running, now we need to keep it safe. To do this, riders need to do a visual bike check, plan your ride, slow down and be aware of your surroundings. We have started this year out a little on the bad side with 11 fatalities in 2019 and 8 fatalities in 2018 so we are up and now we are going into May. Last year in May alone we had 25 fatalities. What will it take to keep this number down? It will take all of us working with the young riders and watching our friends to tell them when they are getting ready to do something stupid. One of the ways we can keep ourselves safe is to take a motorcycle riding class. The first thing I hear people say is, “I have been riding for 30 years so I don’t need to do that”. Everyone I have ever talked to that takes a class comes back and says, “I did learn something”. They are training more riders today than ever before. Class enrollment is up this year, 525 students over last year. We need to keep the classes full. Remember that you can take a 16-hour course or a one-day course. I think everyone going for the first time should take the 16-hour course. If you are an experienced rider, they do have a very full 1-day course. This 1-day course also works for the rider that has been riding on a temporary permit for years because he has not found the time to go take the test. Do the 1-day and if you pass the riding test you will get your endorsement. The class is ONLY $50. Contact www.motorcycle.ohio.gov I spent a very productive afternoon attending the Distracted Driving Task Force meeting. We have sent the Governor a report and he should be releasing it with his input. The Task Force has been meeting since February of 2017 and with input from everyone, it’s making a difference by making people aware of the dangers of distracted driving. I will continue to represent the motorcycle community to keep our roads safe for all bikers. Every day we read about something that makes us wonder why. Members will take the time to call me and voice their opinion and I try to help give them a way to fix it. Let’s take grass clippings on the road. As a biker, you should stop and tell whoever is doing it how dangerous that is to a motorcyclist. And tell them there is a law prohibiting depositing any foreign material on the roadway. And if that doesn’t work, then talk to the proper authority respectfully

Memorials and Freedom

What have these two things got in common? Well, we do memorials to remember all who have laid down their lives for our freedom. We do memorials for our family members, our friends and co-workers. We do memorials so we do not forget the sacrifices made by the ones who have gone before us. Memorials bring us to a place where we can reflect on the memories of those we love. Honor them in a way that brings them to life again in our minds and hearts. It helps us to bring flowers or flags to their gravesites or have a parade that marches those left behind through the streets of our town as we wave our flags of freedom. It’s a time to share stories of the battles fought and the victories won, to share the pain and truisms of what it means to be in the military, standing for what we believe to be a rightful cause...freedom. My Dad was a very strong man and true patriot, he taught me what service and sacrifice means and I appreciate him dearly for the lessons he taught. And though he has been gone from earth since 1987, I am often reminded of the words of wisdom he used to teach me about how to survive in this crazy place. After he passed, we figured out that he had 48 years of military service in his legacy. Both Navy and Army. World War II, Korea, Vietnam. He didn’t tolerate nonsense, yet he listened to every side of a disagreement with an open mind. He smiled with his eyes and kept a straight face... “never let the other side know what you’re thinking or feeling” he would say, “that way they can’t see your weaknesses and use them against you.” Some might say he had a good poker face...and yes, it works. And that is my memorial to my Dad, a tribute to his memory lived out through my life that I can pass on to the next generations. I cannot thank him enough for his willingness to give his life in service for me. Freedom isn’t just a state of mind, it’s a state of the heart. Our freedoms are still being fought for by our military men and women on a daily basis however, there’s another freedom that has been bought and paid for with the ultimate sacrifice of one. You see, true freedom isn’t found in laws or ordinances. It’s not found on foreign soil nor is it found in physical warfare. Our true freedom was bought and paid for by the life of one man, an innocent man who had done no crimes, committed no sins, brought no shame to anyone. This one man, who sacrificed all, did it for your inward freedom. Freedom from worry, shame, guilt, unforgiveness. Freedom from the heavy load of the world around us that seems we have no control over. Freedom from addictions and poverty. Freedom to know what real truth is so that we can live without fear of what we cannot see, but yet have faith in whom we have yet to see. True freedom gives us power to believe that we can make a difference in this world. True freedom gives us a voice. True freedom is a choice. True freedom is found in believing in one man, Jesus Christ and believing that His sacrifice on the cross was for you. His sacrifice not only brought true freedom, it brings eternal life...the ultimate freedom. His sacrifice wasn’t just about the covering of sin, it was about the giving of life to you and me. Galatians 5:1 says “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” Find your freedom in Christ today. Here for you... It provides you with a place to be and a time to be there, pretty much 24/7/365. You spend several months at a time deployed. When you get home, you work long hours, so that takes care of a good part of your day. Then you’ve got frost calls at the club on Fridays after work. Another weekend that month you have duty. The next there’s a mandatory fun event of some kind. Your next door neighbors are military too, so they invite you over for dinner every so often. For better or worse, while you’re in the military, you’re always busy and rarely alone. In the civilian world, after you walk out the glass doors, no one cares what you do. Outside of blatant misconduct that might discredit your employer, they generally don’t care much about how you live your life. They sure aren’t going to have you sit in an auditorium for eight hours on a workday to talk about why you should wear more sunscreen. Shotgunning into civilian life is lonely in the best of times Once you have that DD-214 in hand, your social network changes. Chances are you’ll get a job in a whole new city. Once you’re there, you’re no longer in that protective military cocoon. Your neighbors come and go silently to wherever it is they go. On one side, you have a college student whose parents pay his rent and who apparently commutes by skateboard. On the other, who the hell knows, because you’ve never seen anyone enter or leave — just vague signs of occupancy. You think there might be a serial killer with a torture dungeon living there. It’s definitely not like the barracks, or even a typical neighborhood street in a military town. If you do stay around your old duty station, your military friends will still have the demanding schedule you just left — plus you’re probably a sellout contractor, with the logoed polo shirt to prove it. Even if you decide to go back to your old hometown, you aren’t the same person as when you left. Unless you’re picking up that dead-end job right where you left off, you no longer fit in there, either. Your new coworkers generally scatter to the winds after work. Unlike your previous semi-homogeneous band of mostly young male brothers, now you have a diverse group with lives as different as their backgrounds. If you’re single or divorced, it’s even worse. You can’t party with the Friday night crowd unless you want to be the sad old guy in the club. If you don’t have children or they don’t usually live with you, you probably aren’t plugged into the whole kids soccer scene (and it would be a little disturbing if you were). Most of your peers are married, so if you aren’t, you probably aren’t going to be hanging out much. No one likes a third wheel. As far as meeting other middle-aged single folks, that guy who spotted you on the bench press at the gym was really cool, but it seemed weird to ask him to hang out after staring up at his crotch for 10 reps.

Falling into a cycle of self-isolation When you get home you usually have nothing to do. At first, that fills you with sublime joy, but after awhile, having nothing and no one to fill the off-time becomes old. Some people handle that better than others. Unfortunately, charming old-fashioned solitary pursuits such as painting, solitaire, and playing soulful jazz piano at dirty gin joints are far less common pursuits than things like excessive drinking and internet use. Both of those things are addictive, but they do temporarily relieve boredom and loneliness. In the case of drinking, without anyone else to watch what you’re doing, that couple of beers after coming home from work easily becomes 3 or 4, maybe even 5 or 6. You aren’t trying to get shitfaced. You’re just hanging out, watching Netflix or playing video games, while sipping a beer. But sipping beers for several hours quickly adds up, even if you’re not trying. Vets have much greater rates of alcohol abuse than the general public. Then there’s the internet, that great time-suck. It’s the refuge of the lonely, offering instant connections with people around the world. But that virtual companionship can destabilize your remaining relationships in real life. For vets in particular, there’s a temptation to rekindle camaraderie on any number of vicious and misogynisticsocial media pages. An online life devoted to mocking civilians and treating women poorly is even more isolating — after shitting on every non-vet, and even vets who don’t live up to your standard (oh good, another POG hatefest), are you really going to go out, be friendly, and find new friends in real life? Though I’ve wasted too many hours on social media, I’ve never thrown in with the vitriolic Facebook groups. But I see enough reposts of those groups from many of my old colleagues to know that it’s clearly a thing. As far as alcohol, I’ve had more than my share of beers in a sitting enough times to know that I need to keep an eye on that, if for no other reason than my waistline. Along those lines, there are many other unhealthy time-killers, like overeating, smoking, and dipping that vets are especially prone to. Admit you’re lonely. But you’re not alone The plural of anecdote isn’t data. But it’s indisputable that loneliness and boredom have profound effects on health and well being. I can’t help but wonder if a large portion of the acute mental illness and substance abuse problems among vets might really be just the long-term products of poor social networks after leaving the military. Some of the military’s and VA’s organizational efforts would be well spent in finding earlier interventions on that front, instead of waiting until vets’ lives go completely sideways. And on the individual level, it’s just another good reminder to take care of each other. Taking an interest in each other’s lives isn’t a cure-all for our issues, but it does help remind us: We’re not as alone as we think. May is buzzing with excitement!

What an exciting issue of this month’s Thunder Roads Ohio magazine! It’s Bike month, not only in Ohio, but internationally as well. The staff of TRO has been busy gathering events for this big month of bike nights and of course Ohio Bike Week. I touched briefly last month about International Female Ride Day. It is honored the first Saturday in May and has grown by leaps and bounds all over the world. Female riders are encouraged to post photos of their ride with the hashtag #IFRD. IFRD was created in 2007 by a Canadian woman rider, racer and motorcycling advocate, Vicki Gray. Her mission was to bring awareness and respect for women who ride and enjoy motorcycling. IFRD promotes all women in motorcycling and encourages women to engage in the activity. Just Ride! www.motoress.com Speaking of women riders, I have participated the past two years and created a route for the annual Ladies Adventure Weekend sponsored by the Adventure Harley Davidson Group. The 9th Annual Ladies Adventure Weekend theme is Rockabilly-Curves, Chrome and Cruisin’. This event was established in 2011 to unite women who love the sport of motorcycling. Each year attendance grows upwards to 400 lady riders from various states and includes prizes, several led routes to choose from, entertainment and an evening banquet. All types of motorcycles are welcome!

North Central Ohio Bandana Babes and Mettle with Grace Sisterhood created a great all day ride for IFRD. There will be a few stops to meet up at along the route. The ride will originate in Delaware, Ohio at 8:00 AM and continue to Route 30 Harley Davidson in Upper Sandusky. From there, it will continue to Ashland and end at Portage Lakes for a group photo. Another fast-growing community of riders is springing up within local churches. One example is Heartland Riders, which is a motorcycle connect group at Heartland Community Church in Medina. The Heartland Riders have around 125 members and many are female as well. Riders do not have to be a member of a church, as the group is designed to spend time together in community and Sunday rides.

She offers bikers a dream destination easily located from anywhere in Ohio. Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, *resto-mods*, trikes, and radicals * they are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don*t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes. Responsibility! The weather is breaking. More and more riders are hitting the roads. Some new riders, some with years of experience. We talk of Watch for Motorcycles, and Look Twice Save a Life. But I think we as riders, sometimes lose sight of our responsibility on the roads. Many motorists are fearful of motorcycle riders. Perhaps rightfully so. I spend countless hours explaining to friends who do not ride the freedom, the companionship and the friendships I have developed since I took to the road as a rider. They question the danger to me as a rider. They question their safety when a rider takes their responsibility on the road a bit too lightly. Having been on the roads this past beautiful spring weekend I noticed something that was more upsetting to me than distracted car drivers. Riders splitting lanes, tailgaiting, cutting through traffic as if they were the only ones with the right to the road. These weren’t kids. Surprisingly this behavior was exhibited by those I perceived to be seasoned riders; riders I would think might be more conscious of their responsibility on the road. Perhaps they were just itching to hit that throttle wide open. Perhaps a little rusty after a long cold winter. Careless nonetheless. We as riders want respect on the road. We want the right to ride safely. There are enough distracted drivers on the roads today. Unfortunately we cannot control their actions. We can however, control ours. Have fun. Enjoy the sunshine on your face and the wind in your hair. When you ride, respect others on the road. When you ride do so responsibly. It’s time to hit the roads in Northeast Ohio responsibly.

How do you Start? (It's really simple!)

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card! (Online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com, at an Event, or at some Ride Stops!) 2. Like Thunder Roads Ohio on Facebook. (You don’t have to, but it makes things a lot easier and more fun with it.) 3. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 4. Ride out to these stops and show them your card or check in with the #TRO Hashtag on social media. 5. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!

You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio.

PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like.

Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.

One of the really exciting aspects of our ride program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can evolve with new stops, special prizes, and other updates throughout the year! We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops may only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again, this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. Ohio’s motorcycle rally – Ohio Bike Week – roars back for 2019 in all it’s glory with a full 10 days of Rockin’, Ridin’ and “biker shenanigans” along the North Coast. Last year OBW had cut back to 5 days in effort to focus their resources and make the Rally more concentrated for those attending and participating. However, the crowds and local communities cried out – and the OBW powers listened. Thanks to the support of key sponsors, such as Toledo Harley-Davidson, Mad River Harley-Davidson, and Lake Erie Shores and Islands (www.shoresandislands. com) – Ohio Bike Week has returned to its traditional 10 day format. The first big concert of the week is held at Toledo Harley-Davidson on Friday May 24th – as they have traditionally kicked things off for Ohio Bike Week. This year it’s the legendary heavy metal band Queensryche firing things up. This is a great party and always draws a huge crowd to the dealership. With a massive portable stage erected, the Bike Week crew transforms the back lot into a true concert venue for the night. Then when the show is over, they bring it all out to Sandusky as the focus shifts there.

On Saturday, May 25th, Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting the OHIO BIKE WEEK Championship Bike Show in downtown Sandusky right on the Barrel House Pier. Right there on the water, the show will feature some of the top bikes from across the state – including Best of Show Bikes from the 2019 TRO Championship Bike Show Series. Registration starts at Noon, with the voting and judging going from 2-4pm. This is an invitational show, with invites going out to Best of Show, People’s Choice, and Best in Class Winners from the 2018 Series. There are, however, a limited number of spots available for first time and open applications to be considered.

CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS for the Piston Power Show and last year’s Ohio Bike Week. It’s our intention to present the ring this year to the SERIES CHAMPION. Professional photographers will be on-site to take pictures for a number of publications as well. The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “restomods”, trikes, and radicals - are all featured in the shows. It’s also important to note that these are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we

do require that all bikes are functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Even if you’ve never shown your bike before, you’re welcome to come on out. If you’ve spent some time customizing or restoring your bike and you’re proud of what you’ve accomplished – come on out and put it in the show! Even if you don’t win anything, chances are that you’ll meet some great folks and have some fun. There will be live music and the Twisted Tea Bar will be open right on the water. The Twisted Tea Girls and our own Iron Angels will be on hand as well – helping to host the party, give away plenty of “swag”, and get pictures taken with the bikes. What better way to spend the day?

Awards will be given out across more than a dozen classes, as well as a Best of Show and People’s Choice Trophy. Sponsored by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys and Twisted Tea – the show promises to be a fun time on the pier with some amazing bikes. Once again, Lenny Strnad of Vivid Jewelers (www. vividjewelers.com) has created a unique custom Championship Ring that will be awarded to the BEST OF SHOW BIKE. On Monday, May 27th, Ohio Bike Week, and Mad River H-D are hosting an Official Attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record for Largest Motorcycle Poker Run. They need at least 1,495 people to break this record – and you’re invited to be a part of the WORLD RECORD event. Registration begins at 9am at the dealership and you must be checked in by 10am to be part of the official count. All proceeds from this ride benefit the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Central Ohio Chapter and Fisher House. These are great folks that deserve our respect, appreciation, and support – so riding with them is the least we can do. Of course, this is BIKE WEEK, so it would be great if we could all get a little wind in our hair in addition to all the concerts and festivities. Thankfully, themed rides run all week with daily rides from Mad River Harley-Davidson and numerous local runs supporting worthwhile causes as well. With Bike week back to ten days, the traditional rides such as the Tuesday Prison Ride

and Kelley’s Island Poker Run on Wednesday are back. These two rides are extremely popular and always draw a crowd. The Jesse James Celebrity Charity Ride takes place on Thursday and benefits Stein Hospice. Jesse James himself and numerous other local and national motorcycle celebrities take part in this ride and it’s always a great time. And of course, it ends at the OBW Pool Party (at the Comfort Inn) and you know that’s a PARTY! More on that later… The Annual B.A.A.N.C. Owen Barker Memorial Run leaves the Barrel House Saloon on Sunday, May 26th and supports the work of local riders to help children in need. It’s a great, boots on the ground organization that we strongly recommend supporting. The ride ends at the Knucklehead Saloon in Huron, where there’s live music, raffles, and plenty of fun for all.

On Wednesday, May 29th, the First Annual Ohio Bike Week IRON & INK Tattoo Contest will be hosted by Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine at The Original Margaritaville. Registration starts at 6pm and runs until 7:30. This is a great time with live music and a chance to show off your ink. If you’ve got a cool story behind your art – that’s even better. It’s a social, interactive contest with the crowd voting on their favorite pieces with awards for potentially 7 categories and cash prizes for Best Piece and Best Overall Canvas. There’s also a chance for artists and studios to win prizes and recognition as well, if they are present. It’s sure to be a new OBW Tradition. On Thursday, May 30th, the Ohio Bike Week goes into overdrive with the start of the World Famous Downtown Block Party! This is three days of partying in the streets of downtown Sandusky with live music on multiple stages, hundreds of vendors and exhibitors – and THOUSANDS of Brothers & Sisters celebrating Ohio Bike Week! On Thursday, JACKYL kicks things off with an always rowdy show that has become a Bike Week tradition. Then Friday, there’s a triple billing with 3 NATIONAL HEADLINERS on the Progressive Main Stage with SAVING ABEL, TRAPT, and SALIVA all performing. Then Saturday, June 1st – BLACK STONE CHERRY closes out the Block Party. That’s 5 NATIONAL RECORDING ARTISTS headlining – FREE CONCERTS – in 3 days! That’s right – all three shows are FREE for those downtown, but of course you need a VIP ticket if you want to get up front and close to the stage.

Also, on Thursday, is our favorite OBW Event - the Thunder Roads of Ohio – OBW Pool Party at the Comfort Inn! The Pool Party includes a Bikini Contest for the Ladies and a “Cannonball Contest” for - well, anyone that wants to take the plunge! The event is hosted by the Twisted Tea and Russ Brown Girls – as well as our own TRO Iron Angels! It’s always a great time and one of the most popular OBW events on social media as everyone finds plenty to take pictures of! I’m an Ohio Biker and this is our home state rally, but that’s not the only reason why Ohio Bike Week is easily one of my favorite rallies anywhere – and it’s not just because I’m a homer or that we work with them; quite the contrary. We enjoy working with Ohio Bike Week because of how they run their event! The folks at OBW have always taken the approach that they will throw a HUGE PARTY – and the crowds will take care of them by spending their own money as they see fit. The vast majority of the shows and entertainment is FREE – and those few things requiring admission are more than reasonably priced. The OBW masterminds have always believed that if they offer fair prices and a good product – in the form of quality entertainment in a cool setting, riders will support the rally. While you’re enjoying the rally, we ask that you make it a point to support the exhibitors, vendors, sponsors, and local businesses that make this Rally possible. Queensryche

Queensryche formed in 1980 and hail from Bellevue, Washington. They released an impressive 15 studio albums, one EP, several DVDs, and continue to tour today. However, the original line up consisting of Geoff Tate, Eddie Jackson, Michael Wilton, Chris DeGarmo, and Scott Rockenfield are no longer together. Despite selling over 20 million records and achieving world acclaim, guitarist DeGarmo left the band in 1998, quoting “personal reasons.” Several years later, in San Paulo, Brazil following what many claim was an over publicized backstage altercation before the show, singer Geoff Tate was officially fired from the band. Geoff and long-time manager Susan Tate responding to the firing, filed a lawsuit in Washington court, claiming the he was wrongfully terminated. The ruling in the preliminary injunction was that both parties could use the name Queensryche until a court ruling or a settlement decided who would get to use the name. It took over 2 years but, the case was finally settled on April 17, 2014 in which founding members Wilton, Rockenfield, and Jackson were awarded the rights to the bands trademark and allowed to continue playing with Todd La Torre and Parker Lundgren. The Band found its most commercial success in 1990 with the release of Empire. Empire peaked at #7 and sold more than 3 million copies in the USA alone, which is more than the previous four releases combined. The album was also certified silver in the UK. Silent Lucidity which featured an orchestra, became the band’s first top 10 hit. The arrangements on Empire were more straightforward than the bands other offerings. The Building Empire Tour lasted 18 months longer than previous tours and allowed the band to headline shows for the first time EVER! Using their headlining status, allowed the band to perform Operation Mindcrime in its entirety with songs from Empire thrown in for good measures! This tour would add a black mark to the bands history, while during a concert in a sports hall in Ichtegem, Belgium on November 20, 1990, a scuffle in the audience broke out which resulted in an American fan stabbing a Belgian fan to fatality in the chest. Queensryche burst onto the scene in 1982 with the release of their “Queensryche EP”, their full-length follow-up “The Warning”, and 1986’s “Rage for Order”, catapulted the band into international fame. But it wasn’t until 1988 that the band achieved world-wide dominance, with the release of Operation Mind Crime. Operation Mind Crime would go on to become one of the top 10 best-selling concept records of all time! Loverboy By: Ted “Hollywood” Heckman TRO CONTRIBUTOR The band name “Loverboy” emerged from a dream Paul Dean had one night after spending time the previous night with some of the band members including Mike Reno and their girlfriends at the time. Before going to the movies, the girls were browsing through fashion magazines. The guys in the band noticed a Cover Girl ad. So, Cover Girl became Cover Guy and then later became Loverboy later that night in Dean’s dream. After having told Mike Reno about the dream, Reno agreed to try the name out and of course it stuck. Having formed in early 1979 in Calgary Alberto, Canada, Mike Reno {Vocals}, Paul Dean {Guitars}, Doug Johnson {Keys}, Matt Frenette {Drums}, and Scott Smith {Bass} wouldn’t take long to prove to the world that they were a force to be dealt with. The band’s line up was ready, rehearsals were done, the name had stuck-- what was next? For the newly formed Loverboy, they choose their first live debut opening for the KISS dynasty tour at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, B.C. on Nov 19th, 1979. After being rejected by almost every label in the states, it would be Columbia/CBS records Canada who offered the band a recording contract. In less than one year, the band had managed to open for KISS, probably one of the most successful bands of the ‘80s, and secured a record deal. Loverboy signed their deal and began recording their first record on March 20th, 1980. Their self-titled album “Loverboy” spawned two hits, “Turn Me Loose” and “The Kid is Hot Tonight”. The album cover was designed by Barbara Astman. She took the song lyrics for “Little Girl” and typed them on top of a self-portrait polaroid as it was developing. Throughout the ‘80s, Loverboy racked up numerous hit songs, both in Canada as well as the United States. Their debut album Loverboy sold over a million copies in Canada over that summer. The album didn’t ever debut in the United States until Nov of that same year. America in its true fashion {Not to be outdone} managed to buy up over two million copies. This forced the band to go on a massive tour doing over 200 shows opening for the likes of Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, Kansas and Def Leppard. The first single “Turn me Loose” reached #7 on the Canadian charts and #35 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in early 1981. The follow up Album “Get Lucky” was released in Oct of 1981 during their tour with Journey. The hit track, “Working for the Weekend” became a blue-collar anthem, along with “When it’s Over” and “Lucky Ones” that pushed the sophomore album to the #7 spot on the Billboard album charts, selling just over four million copies. That same year Loverboy won 6 Juno awards. A record that still stands this very day. Loverboy went on to release two more albums “Keep it Up” in 1983, and its first single “Hot Girls in Love” became their most successful to that date, reaching #11 on the US charts. As well as “Lovin Every Min of it” the bands fourth album release in 1985 with the single written by Mutt Lange and “This Could be Your Night” co-written by Journey’s Jonathan Cain becoming their first and second U.S. billboard top 10 hits respectfully. In 1986 the band released “Heaven in Your Eyes”, a song featured in the movie Top Gun. It peaked at #9 on the Billboard charts. Loverboy is celebrating 40 years together as one of only a few bands that managed to stay together that long. By: Ted “Hollywood” Heckman TRO CONTRIBUTOR Ohio Bike Week’s 10 days of Bikes, Babes, Booze and Bands, all on the shores of Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio. The Bikes, the babes and the booze all explain themselves. So, this is about the Bands. Well one band in particular. JACKYL. This band of misfits formed in 1991. Their sound is unique in a way that can only be described as Heavy Metal Southern Rock. Their debut album has sold more than one million copies in the U.S. with hits like “Down on Me” and “When Will It Rain”. But the show stopper is the “Lumber Jack” song. It features a chain saw solo by vocalist Jesse James Dupree. In 1992 Jackyl’s self-titled debut was released and featured a song entitled “She Loves My Cock”. Of course, this was omitted from the edited versions as well as suggestive elements on the album cover art. KMart in Georgia {subsequently the band is from Kennesaw, Georgia} refused to sell Jackyl’s cd so the band played an impromptu concert in front of the store. Footage of the event was used for the music video of their single “I Stand Alone”. The band’s success was solidified when they were invited to play Woodstock ‘94 in Saugerties, NY. Other artists were paying attention to the band and in 1997 when Jackyl was recording “Cut the Crap” their single, “Locked and Loaded” would feature guest vocals from one of the biggest names in the industry, AC/DC vocalist Brian Johnson. Johnson would later return for Jackyl’s 2002 album “Relentless”. After the events of 9/11 Jackyl recorded and released “Open Invitation” which received wide air play throughout the U.S. It featured lyrics that included “I hate you Bin Laden” and “you’ve got an open invitation to kiss our ass”. The song mixed clips from George C. Scott’s portrayal of George S. Patton giving a speech to his soldiers in the movie Patton and President George W. Bush reading from the Bible’s Shepard’s Psalm. Psalms 23: verse 4. The band has described this song and its lyrics as being written in the key of anger; angry that such things can happen in this country. It was not directed toward any religion or race of people. It is directed toward the assholes responsible. In 2009 Full Throttle Saloon TV show premiered on Tru Tv. The series which takes its name from the bar, Chronicles, the daily operations of the world’s Largest Biker Bar. Full Throttle Saloon is located in Sturgis, SD. Michael Ballard purchased these 30 acres of land in 1999. Jesse James Dupree is a business partner to Ballard and appears on the show. In 2010 Jackyl released “When Moonshine and Dynamite Collide”. Several singles were released but the stand out video was for the hit “Just Like A Negro” featuring Run D.M.C. Stemming from his love for everything Rock N Roll, in 2011 Dupree launched Jesse James American Outlaw Bourbon, which exceeded all expectations and is now sold in over 40 states as well as countries around the world. Jesse and his business partner Michael Ballard also opened the Deadwood Distillery company in Deadwood South Dakota. Nothing captures the essence of outlaw more than Jackyl and its many brandings. Riding with Ian – Riding in Cuba! by: Ian Abrams,TRO Contributor I like to say that I consider myself a 1% motorcycle rider. No disrespect to the “1%’ers”, but I am fairly certain that I’ve ridden more than 99% of the riders out there. And I’ve been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to not only ride all across America – but all over the world as well. I have ridden close to 600,000 miles, including all the US States at least twice, most three times...only once to Alaska, and have ridden on four Hawaiian islands covering the perimeter of each island in a total of 8 days. Beyond the US I’ve hit every Canadian province, Northern Mexico, Japan, Israel, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Costa Rica, touched Nicaragua, and even hit a few of the Caribbean islands – Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. Martin. I’ve always wanted to go to Cuba, though. For years, I’ve wanted to go – especially before there are major social and economic changes. You just never know these days. And of course, I wanted to go by motorcycle. So, I got together with a local Cleveland friend, Bruce Ente, who had the same desire as I and spoke a bit of Spanish. My plan was just the two of us, but found that we needed a guide service to enter the country. We then decided to invite other friends and we became 5 bikes. With these extra bikes, we found a German tour company that would help us make all of the arrangements for what we considered a very fair price. For approx. $3,800 plus the cost of gas, eating out, and airfare. The package included 11 days – two nights at all inclusive resorts and 9 days at Bed and Breakfasts. Most importantly though, it included relatively new 700 GS BMW’s and a full-time amazing guide for throughout the trip.

At this point, I want to share some photos and moments from trip – but first a few important things worth noting about riding through CUBA. • Cuba will not accept United States dollars (but will exchange dollars at a 13% discount) or US based credit cards and will not deal with US based travel companies. (But yes for Jet Blue? I have no idea..) • The German motorcycle tour company we found, PROFIL CUBA REISEN, was reasonably easy to access by internet, responsive, accommodating, and with five bikes, we were able to make our own scheduled on a private guided trip. I personally did not deal with the tour company, but my friend was satisfied. • Forget about a US deal on phone service and computer.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

Find the Right Bike to Get into Sport Touring After a long winter, riding season is finally here. If you are interested in riding sport-touring style this year, Sport Touring Corner is here to help. As I’ve said before, sport-touring riders look forward to a challenge and enjoy developing their riding skills, which are directed toward riding twisty roads at a brisk pace. That said, sport touring means something different to each rider, so I asked some MSTA (Motorcycle Sport Touring Association) members to talk about their approach and bike choices. Pat Mogavero, Cold Spring, KY: “Sport-Touring” is more a state of mind than it is defined by what bike someone rides. It differs from just touring because the intent is not to just “go there, see that”, it’s more about riding challenging twisty roads at a quick pace on the way to “there”. It’s more than just riding around one’s home base, because it encourages and involves traveling (touring). We don’t bypass the backroads; we seek them out. We don’t worry about MAKING “good time”, we desire to HAVE a good time while traveling. We enjoy the twisty route along the way.

Gerald Willis, Cortland, OH: Been through some 15 bikes, doing rides with this group and have ridden many Honda CBR and Suzuki GSXR sport bikes. I must say if you wish to do multi-day rides, a bike that accommodates luggage and has a bit less sporty riding position is a plus. The sport touring bike I have enjoyed the most is the Kawasaki Ninja 1000. (Have had two!) I believe there are more comfortable and more expensive models, but it does everything fairly well. I also just purchased a Kawasaki Z 900, and I must say if equipped with aftermarket luggage, looks like it is going to be a hit, with a low price point.

This type of riding can be done on ANY bike. However, bikes designed for their ability to handle twisty roads, that carry some luggage, and provide some degrees of comfort all at the same time are what I think of when I think of a “sport-touring” bike. They make it more enjoyable but are not necessary. It certainly doesn’t take a bike like a Yamaha FJR, Kawasaki Concours, Honda VFR, or even a “sport” bike to be a sport tourer. Nor does it take the newest GPS, cruise control, hard luggage, or any other farkle. Jack Smith, LaPorte, IN: “If you already have a bike, pack your gear on it and take a long, multi-day ride. Now you’re touring.

Steve Coffman, Asheville, NC: In my mind, sport touring is a style of riding that combines the attitude of sport bike riding, such as aggressive riding in the twisties, with touring, which is more about multi-day traveling and long mileage. While any bike can be used for both activities, the sport-touring bike combines some of the nimbleness of a lightweight powerful sport bike and the comfort and weight capacity of a touring bike.

While you’re touring, try to stick to the squiggly lines on the map as you work on your skills. Work on upping your pace and getting into “the zone.” Now you’re sport touring!

I find that my Yamaha FJR leans a little more toward sport bike riding. It is very quick and will keep up with most sport bikes. It does a fairly decent job of touring long miles but is not as comfortable as some of the other sport touring bikes. Sporttouring for me is more of a frame of mind in how one approaches riding

The next step is to make friends with a similar kink, ride with them a bit, and see whose bike you covet. Once you figure that out, go shopping!

Wayne Muri, Grand Haven, MI: In my humble estimation the top three are the Kawasaki Concours 14, Yamaha FJR 1300, and Honda ST1300. I rode cruisers until about ten years ago when I was introduced to a Concours. We were riding the twisties along a river bed in northern Kentucky when a friend offered to trade

bikes. Riding his Concours, I discovered that instead of wrestling my bike through the turns I was doing a motorized ballet! Never looked back- have ridden Concours and FJRs ever since. Rode from Avon, Colorado to the outskirts of Chicago in one day and felt fine since my weight was balanced between ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. It is an uncannily comfortable position as opposed to sitting on my tailbone ala cruiser style. Currently planning long trips this summer on a Concours 14. Mike Kershaw, Omaha, NE: What bike you choose often depends on what you are coming from. If you’re coming to sporttouring from sport bike riding, you would probably just want a liter bike with bags. I most recently had a cruiser so the FJR was a great option. It’s a good middle of the road choice for someone coming from either direction. Just starting out sport touring I think riding position is the biggest factor. Charlie Thompson, Littleton, CO: A few years back Motorcycle Consumer News did a sport touring bike comparison. Yamaha FJR vs Kawasaki Concours 14 vs BMW K1600GT. The winner? All the testers liked the BMW R1200GS adventure chase bike the best. It was just as fast in the twisties, more comfortable and more versatile. Adventure bikes make wonderful sport tourers. I’d say Kawasaki Versys, Suzuki V-Storm, Yamaha Super Tenere, Honda VFR1200X, Triumph Tiger. I like shaft drive for touring. Buy 3 years old from somebody with service records. Spend the thousands saved on a long trip and good riding gear! Jeremy Zorns, Kenosha, WI: Another thought- in addition to good riding gear, a person should have SOME kind of formal rider training. MSF Basic Rider course at a minimum. That helps with low speed handling, so one won’t be as likely to drop their bike, and also basic road riding survival skills. Private instruction with a rider coach is probably better for dynamic riding.

Mike Bowling, Sharonville, OH: Everyone’s definition of sport-touring is going to differ depending on their background, i.e., someone coming from a diet of strictly off road riding is going to differ from someone coming from sport bikes and they’d both differ from someone coming from a big bagger who only rides interstate. The off-road guy would likely be happy on a Suzuki V-Strom or Kawasaki Versys due to their upright seating. With cheap(er) reliable examples being fairly easy to find, who could argue? The sport bike guy will likely be happy on Honda VFR/Kawasaki Concours/Yamaha FJR type of bikes and no arguing they are reliable mounts that would still satisfy. Dan Steinberg, Chicago, IL: Making the choice to buy a motorcycle should be a very thoughtful and intelligent process, ultimately ending on choosing the bike that you feel most comfortable on, regardless if it’s called a “sport touring,” “sport bike,” “super naked,” etc. I own all three types and have done sport touring trips on all of them just fine. The bike you feel most comfortable on will also be the bike you enjoy riding the most. Just about every bike out there can be fitted with tank and tail bags, so my recommendation is start with the bike you feel most comfortable on right out of the box. Then add what you need to suit the riding and trips you want to take.

A couple books I recommend are “A Twist of the Wrist 2” by Keith Code and “Proficient Motorcycling” by David Hough.

It’s a Yamaha FJR and I like it because it looks sporty but is big enough for traveling with two saddle bags and a trunk.” (At this point I’m pulling a photo up on my phone to show them.)

14 Reasons to Start Adventure Riding

I’ve recently welcomed another rider into the “adventure” world. To his credit, he rode dirt bikes “back in the day”, but has been dedicated to street riding for many years now. After seeing all the crazy photos here on the website and social media feeds, he decided to once again venture off-road. Apparently, I’ve unconsciously been trying to excite folks into taking their motorcycle on a woods adventure, but today, I’m making that a conscious effort. Needless to say, I’m enamored with adventure riding, but beyond “because it’s fun”, here are 14 reasons why you can and should give adventure riding a shot.

Back in 2016, I published “Putting more Adventure into Moto Adventurer“, after

the opportunity to do both. While I don’t often ride and then hike, it’s happened before. More than anything else, it’s nice to disappear into the woods, find a nice scenic spot next to a creek, shut down the engine, and just listen the birds singing. With that, a typical jaunt through my beloved Bluegrass means I have run-ins with deer, wild turkeys, guinea hens, and occasionally snakes crossing the trail. Considering gas stations and restaurants are seldom near the prime off-road locations, packing a sandwich and having a picnic on the trail is often standard operating procedure. With a good hammock, it’s even easier to turn this whole experience into an overnight affair.

I brought home new (to me) Triumph Scrambler. Long-term followers of the site are no doubt familiar with Rosie’s accolades, but I bring up that story because it marked a clear transition from asphalt to dirt. Even today, there’s little I enjoy more than a lonely stretch of Appalachian twisties, but with the right attitude, when that pavement ends, I think you should keep riding. I’ll go further by saying that, with the right bike, you can arguably ride anywhere. This, of course, is a matter of taste, comfort, budget, and perhaps the right tires, but there are many ways to skin this cat, and this is easily why I enjoy adventure riding so much. There have been countless times when I’ve been out in the boonies and I spot a great photo opportunity, which frequently means leaving the safety of the tarmac; something that is now seldom a second thought. “Anywhere” again depends on those before mentioned factors, but it goes without saying, once you’ve left the asphalt, your riding opportunities essentially double.

I really enjoy a good hike, among other outdoor activities. Unfortunately, prime hiking weather is often prime motorcycling weather; adventure riding means I have 92

of the best views are still found at the end of a dirt road. In many cases, the “road” itself is the view. While riding the Triple-Nickel last spring, my GPS led me astray which turned into an off-road adventure. That adventure led to a random covered bridge hidden in the forest. Last week while scouting routes for Red River Scramble, we encountered a waterfall over a rock shelter that was literally part of the trail. Aside from the likes of the Blue Ridge Parkway, paved roads seldom reveal such gems.

As a guy who learned to ride on the pavement first, the sensation of the rear end of the motorcycle sliding out of line with the front

wheel was especially unnerving. However, once you realize it’s all part of the process, and get comfortable with the rear wheel doing its thing, you suddenly have a new appreciation for a motorcycle’s capabilities on asphalt. You rapidly find yourself far less intimidated by limited traction conditions. “Sliding” is often a tactic used off-road to get the motorcycle into position for the next obstacle; worst case it’s something that happens and you learn how to manage it without incident (more on that in a moment). Again, once you’ve mastered that experience, you now know what to do in a bad situation on the tarmac. Most importantly, riding offroad will teach you how to look where you want to go, with a quickness; a critical street skill that at times, still evades veteran street riders.

Beyond mastering traction by riding offroad, dirt is also far more forgiving (I should know). Riding dirt usually means that speeds are lower, so the penalties for mishaps are typically less severe. While not always the case, if you crash off-road, the landing is typically softer. Pavement is anything but soft but it’s also lined with a lot of fixed objects that are likely to inflict even more damage at speed. There are, of course, trees in the woods (by definition), but again, the speeds are typically lower, especially in situations where you’re pushing the limits of your riding capabilities, like creek crossings, rocks, and mud. I’ve been “tossed” far more

off-road than I have on the pavement, most of the time while waddling through mud or tractoring up a hill. The tip-overs in the mud are far less eventful than a drop in the parking lot, typically with less damage to the bike to boot.

You

never ride the same road twice

I have an equal appreciation for riding my favorite “go-to” roads, just like I enjoy spending entire days looking for new places to ride.Some folks get bored with the same old stuff and want to ride someplace new OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

most of the time. That’s the beauty of offroad riding; the route doesn’t need to change, because mother nature changes the character of the riding surface with each passing day. I

take a few trips to Shawnee State Forest every year, I’ve never seen the route the same way twice, often no more than two weeks apart. One week I’ll find mud on the trail in a spot I’ve never seen it before; the next trip I’ll find a gnarly rut from the previous day’s thunderstorm, you just never know.

There’s

no such thing as a boring dirt road

While ripping along the sweeping paved roads, at some point, backed up traffic, the risk of injury, or the threat of legal altercation typically trumps your interest in high-speed maneuvers. Thus, you finally accept the inevitable and settle into following some beat-up pickup around your favorite set of twisties. When riding off-road, you’re nearly always the fastest vehicle on the trail (if not the only vehicle), and most folks will wave you by. Related to my previous point about traffic laws, I can’t think of a single time I’ve found myself bored on the trail. More excitement can always be found at the twist of a throttle. If you get bored putting around the trail, just wick it up a few more notches. That boredom can rapidly transform into stark terror at the next bend (if not sooner).

solid plan most of the time. Paved roads (typically) lead to somewhere, so someone will be along eventually, even if you can’t make a phone call. Off-road, however, that’s not always the case. Where I ride in Kentucky isn’t particularly remote, however many of those trails are places where only a 4-wheel drive could potentially retrieve a disabled, 500-pound motorcycle, and I doubt many tow truck drivers are interested in attempting it. That’s one of the reasons the kitchen sink is often packed on the back of the Scrambler; if I get a flat, break a lever, or have some other mechanical issue, I need to manage on my own until I can limp the bike back to some form of civilization. Again, this concept is not for everyone; certainly many among us have no interest in riding that far into the bush, but for the select few, the knowledge that you are your only safety net is part of the allure. For those that find themselves in the middle, I certainly recommend the buddy system; being stuck out in the woods with

Everyone appreciates something different about motorcycling, for me, it’s often the closest I’ll ever get to being a fighter pilot. As such, that occasionally means my taste for “spirited” riding is at odds with the local constabulary… Fortunately, riding off-road typically means that posted speed limits are well… not posted, as few would attempt to ride at such speeds that would necessitate a “limit”. My off-road skills certainly fall into that category, as I seldom find myself

exceeding my ability to apply the brakes on a loose surface. However, off-road riding can be the hooligan’s paradise as there’s typically no peace officer to be found; or anyone else for that matter. Needless to say, urbanites frown upon wheelies on the boulevard, but when riding off-road, the ability to lift the front wheel is praised, furthermore, it’s a necessary part of tackling certain obstacles; a skill one should master if they plan on diving deeper into the backwoods. Or at least, that’s what I’m going to tell myself… I’m obviously not condoning hooning around forest service roads and creating problems with the local park rangers. However, if you’re out on the trail in the middle of nowhere, the consequences are between you, mother nature, and perhaps your insurance company.

Solitude

Which brings me to my next point, solitude on the rural backwater roads is what I love most about long rides through Appalachia. When you leave the pavement, those roads are even more remote, and often, a lot closer to home than such sparsely traveled paved roads. On a different note, folks concerned about the dangers that other drivers pose to motorcyclists, those complications are minimized the moment you leave the pavement, as few people have any interest in traveling on dirt roads. This perspective is obviously not for everyone, being alone and “off grid” without the ability to get help is not appealing to some. However, if you’re looking to turn off all the “noise” of urban life, see the “wild” and connect with nature, off-road riding again combines two of your passions at once.

Self-reliance

When discussing the best tool kit, many have suggested that the less kinesthetically inclined simply carry a cell phone and a credit card. Here on the east coast, that’s a pretty

your closest friend is slightly less intimidating than negotiating with the local black bear all by your lonesome (this way you just need to be faster than your buddy). If nothing else, your buddy can usually help push the bike out of the mud, and in the best of circumstances, you can now split a tool kit between two bikes instead of hauling all the heavy stuff solo.

Despite all these stories about being down in the holler, knee deep in the Kentucky clay, adventure riding doesn’t have to be the stuff you see on the internet. In the Instagram age, everyone is posting photos of ridiculously over-weight machinery traversing the gnarliest off-road trails. Most of us, however, are simply enjoying a scenic detour along the forest service roads. Shawnee State Forest is another classic example of this; most of the trails inside the forest are immaculate gravel roads that I would take a Harley down, no different than my CRF250L (albeit slower). finding the RIGHT bike, as the internet would have you believe” because you don’t have to take your motorcycle down rugged single track to enjoy an off-road adventure. I’ve certainly taken my Scrambler to places few others will go, but that had a lot to do with the fact it was the only bike I had, but mostly a testament to my own stubbornness. Most folks will have a lot more fun just enjoying the scenery at their local state parks and on unimproved county roads.

You

don’t need a $20,000 bike to try it

Speaking of the Scrambler, it’s far cry from a BMW R1200GSA or KTM1090. If you ask three people what kind of bike you need for a given adventure, you’ll get four opinions and I about guarantee, one of them will be the “premium everything” option. Something of note, most street bikes have more suspension travel than my Scrambler, and it goes without saying that didn’t stop it. You should also know, that despite wanting the best adventure bike, or the most dirt-worthy thumper, a KLR 650 is arguably THE cheapest option for an “adventure” machine; but even then, any bike can do the job. There will always be more comfortable and more capable machines, not to mention limitless farkles to spend your money on. Find a bike that’s in your budget and go have an

adventure. In time you’ll discover the limits of your comfort zone with respect to where you like to ride and the comfort and capabilities of your machine. Once you’ve figured that out, you can make choices about changing your given mount (don’t forget, two is better than one).

It doesn’t have to be for weeks at a time

I don’t know about you, but I have bills and therefore a job I have to be at five days a week. With obligations and limited vacation time, it’s tough to take a month off work and circumnavigate the country. Believe me, I want to, I just don’t have the means… yet. I imagine most of us are in the same boat, so don’t be discouraged from taking an “adventure” because you don’t have time to trailer out to Colorado and get lost in the

woods. You might be surprised by how many gravel roads are scattered around your state, not to mention, most adventure rallies here on the east coast are within a day’s ride and are typically held over a weekend (I can

think of at least one).

…or thousands of miles away

Charlie and Ewan’s “Long Way Round” was an epic adventure. Many of us would love to take months off work and tear off on a motorcycle adventure. Unfortunately… most of us have some hefty obligations, so that’s easier said than done. While I don’t necessarily think this keeps folks from picking up adventure riding, I want to reiterate that there are often remote and obscure trails to be found a lot closer to home than you might realize. Long-time Moto Adventurer subscribers are familiar with my endless adventure tales from eastern Kentucky; the vast majority of these rides are only day trips.

Murder in Texas 9 were killed, 20 were injured, and 177 were arrested and held on a $1,000,000 bond. Now all charges have been dismissed. Yes, I am speaking of the over reach of the Waco, Texas “Police State” and former Attorney General, Abel Reyna. It has been just over 4 years since the shootout in Waco, TX between rival motorcycle clubs, innocent bystanders, and the adrenaline jockey law enforcement at what is now the former Twin Peaks restaurant. Recently the final 24 indictments were dismissed. In a statement, the new District Attorney, Barry Johnson, called Reyna’s strategy in this case “an illconceived path”. McLennan County, Texas reported $1,317,835.96 in costs associated with Reyna’s personal vendetta against all things MC. There are more than 130 law suits currently pending. This one case should serve as a loud example of what not to do when attempting vigilante justice by a corrupt law enforcement and district attorney’s office. There were citizens arrested, jailed, and presumed guilty without a trial who had absolutely nothing to do with the event taking place, or any motorcycle club in any way. The injustice done to many of these innocent citizen bystanders, religious clubs, military clubs, riding clubs, and other MCs is reprehensible. Many jobs and homes were lost and families left broken and bankrupt, and at least 4 people were murdered by police, one of which had no affiliation with any MC. And who walked away unscathed in all of this? The murdering law enforcement officers who went home to their families while leaving blood in the streets. Welcome to America. Yet the mainstream national media has been dead silent regarding this mass murder and criminal injustice. Imagine you’re at a concert and a shootout ensues, and the only thing you have in common with the shooters is you like the same band, so law enforcement either murders you on the spot, or arrests you with zero evidence that you actually committed any crime, locks you up with a huge unattainable bond so you can’t go back home or to 98

work on Monday, or for months after, so you lose everything. That’s what we’re talking about here. 99% of the people attending this public event, at a public venue, had nothing to do with any of the MCs involved in the fight. Yet they lost everything. Guilty by association, without yet a trial. This sounds like the actions of former Nazi Germany, not present day Unites States of America. This is what the fear mongering egotistical politically driven American injustice system has become. It’s more than disgusting, it’s criminal. The DA’s office was so far out of control, it was reported that they actually sent mug shot pictures to the hometown

newspapers of those arrested in an effort to ruin their lives. Mind you, these people had not even had a day in court to defend themselves. Anyone who doesn’t see how far over reaching and irresponsible that is has lost their mind. The civil suits will rage on for years, and the cost to Texas taxpayers will continue to rise. Yet not one law enforcement agent, or elected government official will spend one hour in jail for outrageous actions in this irresponsible mess. After all is said and done, 9 people lost their lives, and no one will pay for the murder in Texas.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT On Anniversary of Columbine, FASTER Saves Lives Reaches Critical Milestone by Joe Eaton

Since our first FASTER Saves Lives class in the spring of 2013, we have trained more than 2,600 school staff from over 260 school districts across 18 states, including staff from 79 of Ohio’s 88 counties. Demand from schools is still growing. For 2019 we already have 15 classes scheduled in 4 or 5 states just this summer alone. April 20, 2019, marks 20 years since two students committed one of the most horrific crimes ever in our schools. So, what has changed in 20 years (Columbine), 12 years (Virginia Tech), or 7 years (Sandy Hook) for how schools and law enforcement respond to violence in our schools and other mass killings? The year 1999 marked the high point for this type of extreme violence in America’s schools. The decade before 1999 saw on average 19 fatal school shootings per year, compared to the decade we just completed where American schools saw on average 6 fatal shootings with 14 killed per year. Prior to 1999, most deaths were the result of gang warfare spilling into classrooms. Columbine was one of the first where the motivation to become famous played a significant role. Prior to 1999, widespread general violence had forced law enforcement to create and adopt SWAT and similar response teams to deal with criminal situations. Unfortunately, it was not until long after Columbine that they began to realize these mass killings were a new type of crime. The murderers no longer made demands or sought negotiation. They simply wanted a high body count. Waiting for SWAT or other teams to arrive gave the killers what they wanted: more time to kill. This started a slow evolution in law enforcement tactics, beginning with those first to arrive on scene entering schools sooner in small teams.

At the same time, schools were working to be more open and inviting to students, staff and the community in general. Unfortunately, it took additional dead and injured students to push the pace of change in law enforcement response.

We will never get a faster response from highly trained law enforcement teams than we had at Virginia Tech, but there were still over 50 casualties. Law enforcement response was not the solution to this problem.

In 2007, when the mass killings at Virginia Tech occurred, police were in the best position possible. In response to a double murder in the dorms just two hours earlier, SWAT was activated and ready to go. As the murderer entered Norris Hall that morning, there were already 2 fullygeared-up, highly trained SWAT teams less than one mile away.

Schools finally started to realize that a more open environment for students, staff, and community may be opening them up to more violence as well. By 2012, schools had started implementing more and more layers of safety and security. On the morning of December 14, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, was probably at the leading edge of this change. Among

These schools reached out to professional law enforcement, as well as medical and safety experts, and began to figure out that TIME IS ALL THAT MATTERS. When violence starts, the sooner you 1) stop the killing with immediate aggressive force and 2) stop the bleeding with immediate medical care, the more lives will be saved.

other improvements, they had implemented single avenues of entry, automatic locking of doors, and even had on-site mental health professionals to identify and assist with problem students. The Newtown police were also on the leading edge of response that morning. The first officer arrived in less than 3 minutes, and two more were on-site just seconds later. Even with this rapid response, the community lost 20 babies and 6 adults.

This realization gave birth to the FASTER Saves Lives program, which addresses both issues 1 and 2. It shrinks the response time to a minimum by having armed, trained staff on-site at all times. This program has helped to dramatically change the mindset of previously skeptical schools, parents, and law-enforcement, who now see school staff as part of the solution.

Today we are proud to be recognized as the leading program for school violence. We have partnered with our nation’s experts on psychology, firearms, and traumatic medical care. We are training more and more school staff. And we continue to learn and evolve to meet the demand from schools who want the highest level of safety for their staff and students. KNOBLE MOTO NOTES: Clutch adjustment Getting your clutch set right can be a challenge. Here is my basic tutorial on the process.

Harley’s just have one adjuster in the middle of the cable, under a rubber boot.

Your clutch has springs that keep all the plates pressed together. This mechanically links the engine to the transmission. When you pull your clutch lever, the lever pulls a cable, the cable pulls on a linkage that presses against springs, and that releases the pressure that holds your clutch plates together. Release the lever, and the springs take over, press the clutch together again and lock the assembly up. If your clutch cable does not get pulled far enough, the clutch will not fully open. This will cause the bike to want to pull forward when the lever is pulled. This will make shifting either difficult or impossible. Also, if your bike is difficult to get into neutral, it could be because your clutch is not fully opening when the lever is pulled. The drag from the clutch will hold a tension on your transmission gears.

If you have a fine tune adjuster, set it to ¾ of the way in. This leaves range for fine tuning and cable stretch.

pull the rubber boot over the adjuster. If you have a fine tune adjuster, now would be the time to lock down the jam nut there as well. Check the clutch lever for proper movement again. Ride it! All repair work is really about the test ride anyways. Small adjustments can be made at the fine adjuster but take some tools with you in case you have to make any other adjustments in a parking lot. If you find you are running out of adjustment on your cable, then your cable has probably stretched and is beginning to fail. Clutch cables are cheap, so replace it. If you find the clutch hard to pull, or it does not quickly release, check the following: Make sure the cable is lubricated. Drip a little cable lube or fine oil on the cable with the clutch pulled in. Then cycle the lever a few times. Check for damage or kinks in the cable. If found, the cable should be replaced ASAP. Check for hard turns or bends in the cable. This can cause the cable to bind inside the cable lining, making the lever hard to pull.

If your clutch cable is too tight, the pressure will never fully release from the clutch springs. This means your clutch will never fully lock up, and then it will slip when the engine is trying to move the motorcycle.

New cables are generally under $40. Don’t be too reluctant to replace them. *If all of these fail to fix the problem, you may need to investigate the throw out bearing assembly on the clutch.

To adjust your clutch, we will look at the common adjustment points.

Back the adjuster off until the lever has a very small amount of play. This small amount of play ensures that all the pressure has been taken off your clutch springs. At this point cycle the lever a few times. Make sure nothing feels as if it is binding anywhere in the lever stroke. Then lock down the jam jut on the major adjuster and

Most metric bikes have two adjustments in the clutch cable, one being a major adjuster in the middle of the cable that is generally located under a rubber boot. Then there is a fine tune adjustment at the clutch lever, or at the transmission.

Herbed Turkey Breast (Double recipe for a whole turkey)

Hot Wing Dip

1 whole bone-in turkey Breast 1 tbsp minced garlic 2 tsp dry mustard 1 tbsp rosemary, minced 1 tbsp sage, minced 1 tsp thyme, minced 2 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 cup dry white wine ½ cup chicken stock

Makes about 3 cups 2 (8 oz) softened cream cheese 1 cup sour cream 3/4 cup hot sauce 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp celery seeds 2 chicken breasts, cooked and shredded 1 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 cup blue cheese crumbles Tortilla chips, pita chips, or sliced veggies for dipping Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a small baking dish with cooking spray In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, garlic powder, celery seeds and until well combined. Then gently stir in the chicken, 1 cup cheddar, and blue cheese crumbles Pour the dip into your baking pan and smooth out evenly Top with the remaining 1/4 cup cheddar cheese then bake for 15-20 minutes until the top is all melted and bubbly

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. In a small bowl, mix the garlic, mustard, herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil, and lemon juice into a paste. Gently pull the skin lose from the meat and smear half of the paste directly on the meat, under the skin Spread the rest on the outside of the skin. Pour the wine and stock into the bottom of the roasting pan. Place the turkey breast, skin side up, on a rack in a roasting pan and lightly tent with aluminum foil Roast the turkey, 20 minutes per pound. Remove foil about half way through then continue cooking until the skin is golden brown and has reached an internal temp of 170 (but I always take it out at 165 because it will continue cooking for a while out of the oven) Remove fom oven and re-tent with foil for 15 minutes before cutting
