FROM THE PUBLISHER NOVEMBER VETERANS EDITIONS Each and every month, not just this month, we make it a priority to recognize those that have served our nation both here and abroad. With Veteran’s Day being November 11th, we’ve decided to dedicate our November issues going forward to those that have served in our military. It’s so easy for us all to take our freedoms and even the security we enjoy as a nation for granted, but it is the sacrifices of those that have served, and their families, that have provided this for us. It’s been generations since our nation has experienced war here on our own soil or that the majority of our population has even felt threatened at home – and we have our veterans and those serving now to thank for this. THANK YOU. Both of my grandfathers served in World War II and those years obviously greatly impacted them and our family even generations later. When I was younger I heard plenty of stories about their experiences during the war, and it was clear that it helped shape them into the men they were later in life. Driven, successful men that have always been an inspiration to me. My grandmother, Doris, is 93 this year and we are blessed to still have her with us. Over the years I’ve enjoyed hearing stories of how she worked in a bomber plant during the war. I had the opportunity to take her down to the MAPS Aviation Museum (mapsairmuseum.org) in North Canton and tour some of their wartime displays and aircraft there. The “Rosie the Riveter” display brought back countless memories for her, and we were all treated to new stories of what it was like to live during those years. In virtually every story, there seemed to be a reoccurring theme that ran through life during those years. Everyone worked together and did what they had to – for the common good. These days it appears our country is being torn in so many directions. Race, gender, religion, politics, and even generational differences seem to have us more segmented as a country than ever before. In considering all this recent conflict, I really wonder if even this nonsense is yet another “luxury” that our veterans have afforded us with their sacrifices. We have the luxury of wasting time bemoaning absurd social injustices, while our young men and women crisscross the globe and face our enemies on foreign lands. Our troops undertake missions all around the world and stand guard in harm’s way – in order to make this world a safer place for us. They meet our foes head on all across the world, so that we can enjoy the relative peace and tranquility of living in the United States of America. And it’s important to note that they face these challenges as members of the U.S. MILITARY – as Americans, not segmented by any of the distractions that seem to be tearing apart our nation back home. I’d really urge everyone to take the time this month to thank a veteran and consider the sacrifices they have made to serve our country. I would also ask that you consider what lessons we might learn from our veterans – from World War II, from Vietnam, Korea, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq conflicts our troops are currently facing and the many ones that might seem so “minor” to us, but not to those putting their lives on the line. Thank a veteran for their service and recognize the difference they continue to make in our communities every day. Let’s all come together and face the challenges before us as a country and do what needs to be done to make our country GREAT AGAIN! And that’s not a statement made in support of a politician or political part – that’s a statement made in support of our nation. Sincerely,

Chaps for Charity

STATE BREWERY TOUR

Riding for a Reason – raising funds for MDA! A handful of dedicated firefighters decided that they wanted to make a difference and do something different in support of their chosen charity – the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA); so they decided to host a charity poker ride to raise funds. They teamed up with Powder Keg Harley-Davidson and hosted the First Annual Chaps for Charity Ride on September 15th. With the support of Premier Health, the group led a ride and then came back to Powder Keg Harley-Davidson for live music and a silent auction. As with any first year event, they had their challenges – but in the end it all worked out and over $10,000 was raised to help the MDA and those they serve with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and other related diseases. The Clearcreek Professional Firefighters of Local 4207 showed their immense dedication and care for MDA’s families during this year’s Chaps for Charity motorcycle ride. This first annual ride was a tremendous success and we are grateful for the generosity of not only the firefighters, but also to the riders, PowderKeg Harley-Davidson and all those who came out to support the event. They all have helped individuals right here in the Greater Cincinnati area with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases truly live unlimited. - Jennie King, MDA Regional Manager for Firefighter Partnerships

As luck would have it, Thunder Roads Ohio was hosting our 2nd Annual TRO Powder Keg H-D Bike Show that same day and we were able to see first hand the effort of the Chaps for Charity volunteers and their supporters. Looking towards 2019, Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to join the ClearCreek Professional Firefighters of Local 4207 to support MDA with the 2nd Annual Chaps for Charity Ride to take place on Saturday, August 25, 2019. With well over 160 micro and regional breweries flourishing across Ohio – clearly craft beer is a popular craze and one that many riders enjoy. With this in mind, we will be introducing a State Brewery Tour in 2019. In each issue of the magazine we will be profiling at least one brewery, tasting a few brews, and highlighting various recommended “beer stops” across Ohio. We will be developing a digital brewery map on our website and linking to recommended breweries as Ride Stops. Riders will be able to share their reviews and comments on the stops and brews – as well as check-in for a chance to win cool prizes… including a new motorcycle! If you’re a rider with a love of craft brews – stay tuned! Follow our Facebook page and blog online (ThunderRoadsOhio.com/Blog) for updates and more information. If you’re in the business and would like us to consider adding your location as a stop – shoot us an email at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com If you have a passion for craft beers and would like to recommend some stops – we’d love to hear from you as well.

Please note – we are not recommending or encouraging anyone to ride under the influence. Drink and Ride Responsibly – not only for your sake, but for your family and everyone else out on the road. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Website Feature: New and Improved TRO Ride Stop Directory improved directory system. The map feature will give you the option to enter your location

Thunder Roads Ohio has been continually improving our website experience for our subscribers and followers. The newest edition to this ongoing improvement is the updated TRO Ride Stop Directory. The new directory has many features built in that the old ride stop system didn’t have including a fully functional map, ride stop categories, a direction feature and a review system for each location.

section will show our top rated and reviewed ride stops in the directory. The top 10 featured ride stops will be determined by the riders through a rating and review system is built into the new directory, and I will explain how that system works in the following sections.

Ride Stop Business Page

The Home Page The TRO Ride Stop home page features a new map with all the ride stops located on it, with every stop categorized by restaurant, bar, dealership or hotel to help riders know what kind of business each official stop is. This feature should be helpful to those searching for a bar or hotel along their route for example. Below the map is a convenient search feature that can be used to search the directory in a few different ways. You can search the directory by category, specific name of the ride stop or by searching what ride stops are near your location!

After selecting a ride stop on the home page, you will be directed to a dedicated page for that business/stop. On the business listing page, you will see a few new features that we have never had before including: business location, contact details, hours of operation and links to the business’s Facebook page or website.

The next section on the home page is the “popular categories” section that lets riders view all TRO Stops by category. By selecting a specific category, you will be able to see all ride stops that fit that category. For example: If you are looking for all the dealerships in Ohio that are TRO Ride Stops and carry our magazine, you would select the dealership icon and the directory would update to show a listing of all the dealerships.

Business Profile

The last section available on the home page is a listing of all our featured Ride Stops. This

The second tab located under the TRO Ride Stop logo is the map tab. This is one of the most important features in the new and

10

On the business page you will see a set of tabs located below the Thunder Roads Ride Stop Logo. This will be a section that provides a brief description of the business and in the future, it will provide additional details about the business.

and get physical directions to the location you are viewing. The system gives the riders an option of either entering their starting point address or the option of using GPS to locate your current position, which will be quite handy if you are on the side of the road with no specific address to enter!

Ratings and Reviews The ratings and review feature built into the new system is what will power this directory to be the riders best resource when looking for the top locations to stop when your out on the road. The rating and review system will be powered by the rider; with our new directory your opinion will truly matter and will affect what featured Ride Stops you will see on the main page of the directory. Have you had great experiences, food, or drinks at a ride stop? Was the stop less than memorable, bad service or bad parking? Your thoughts and opinions can be expressed by rating a stop and then leaving a detailed review for future riders interested in also stopping at that location. To leave a rating and review only a name (which doesn’t have to be your full name) and email are needed.

In Conclusion Our goal with this new ride stop directory is to empower the riders and provide a resource for you to use while you are out on the road looking for a great location to spend your time. Thunder Roads Ohio has been Ohio’s #1 motorcycle magazine for many years and we wish to continue to provide riders the best resources, whether that is the best magazine, event listing, blog and now the new TRO Ride Stop Directory!

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT

Hi Friends, How does the time fly so fast? It’s November and I’m not ready for winter. As I’m writing this article we still have three months to go in this year for motorcycle crashes and fatalities. Yes, we are looking good, but remember that we still need to Ride Smart. In 2017 at this date we had 3373 crashes and 137 fatalities and now in 2018 we have 2747 crashes and 114 fatalities. That is down for the year and it will do nothing but help if we can stay that way. Keep up the good riding. Summertime means the National Conference of State Legislatures is meeting and Helmet Laws are once again on the agenda. They have revised their web site to have a motorcycle safety section, meaning that they are gathering more information to pursue a helmet bill. We in Ohio have not seen any helmet language at this time because we actively check any signs of helmet discussion. Currently our stats on helmet use is at about 41.7% used and 51.8% not used with unknown at 6.5%. With this we should be in the clear. Remember that ABATE of Ohio would fight as hard to defeat a law that would say you could not wear a helmet as we have for our Freedom not to wear one.

5 months. I try to keep mine a little ready for a nice day. You should follow your owner’s manual recommendations. I like a full tank of fuel, maybe a little stable, all fluids topped off, tires aired up and to give it a good cleaning. I always do a complete service in the spring, so I know I’m fresh and ready. This is the 40th year ABATE of Ohio has been representing Ohio motorcyclists. Please support us by joining. The special this year to be a member is $10.00 and with membership you get a $3500.00 accidental death insurance policy, an electronic magazine (a paper magazine is available for an additional $10) and you are represented at the Ohio State House by ABATE of Ohio. Motorcyclists biggest threat at this time is Distracted Drivers. We go down the road every day and see it first hand. It must come to a stop, and that is why I am part of a Distracted Driving Task Force. Putting all the different distracted driving problems out on the table is how we can find ways to eliminate each kind. The first defense would be through Education and Awareness and then we need to create new Laws and penalties. Currently, it is illegal to use your cell phone or any electronic device while driving but it is a secondary offense. Does it need to be a primary offense? In September every year the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, MRF, puts on The Meeting of the Minds, a conference of all the States ABATE’s under one roof. This year it was in Denver, Colorado and meant renting a car loading Jim Elgin, Kolman Fuzy and myself with gear for a non-stop 1,300 miles to spend three days in meetings. Yes, it would have been nice on the bike like Ed Schetter did, but I am just too old to make those mad dashes anymore and be safe. It is very interesting to see how other states are handling the same problems that we have. Everyone is working on distracted drivers and self-driving cars so we must stay vigilant to jump in and demand our rights. When you get to read this the leaves have been falling, that meaning riding is getting shorter and it is getting colder out. Remember to slow down because leaves are very slippery and dress for the weather, so you can react to any Hazard. RIDE SMART! Many of us put our bikes away in the winter for about 12 12

CMA Legacy When you hear the word Legacy what do you think of? I have found it interesting what some of the meanings might be. Legacy could mean an amount of money or property left to someone in a will or Legacy could be denoting or relating to software or hardware that has been superseded but is difficult to replace because of its wide use (you probably would run into this scenario in the government using an outdated electronic device). There is yet another meaning of Legacy I would like for us to consider today and that is this: a thing handed down by a predecessor. What is that “thing”? Good question. To different people it is going to mean or be different things or items. I have a knife my father used to carry around. I also have my father’s Paratrooper pin from when he was in the Army and served in the Airborne Infantry. Like Dad, I followed in his footsteps and joined the Army but, I like to think I was a little smarter that my dad, in that, when I went into the Army I was smart enough NOT to jump out of a perfectly good airplane! Dad and Mom gave each of us another Legacy. That is the Legacy of living a Godly life. In my dad’s younger years, he did not have the luxury of growing up in a Christian home. However, through a situation after he married Mom, Dad committed his life to Christ, asking Christ into his life, and living the remainder of his life as best he could for Christ. In so doing, he and Mom set not only an example but gave each of us 5 children a Legacy of living for Christ. Here’s a question for you. What kind of Legacy are you going to leave behind? Are you going to leave a Legacy for others to build a relationship on Christ? If not, today is the perfect day to start that Legacy. My father was able to surrender his life to Christ regardless of his rough life before Christ and left a wonderful imprint on many lives of what it means to live for Christ – even outside of our family. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” John 3:17 NASB GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

What is a Veteran?

What comes to mind when you hear the word “Veteran”? Most of us would think of those who have served in the military. According to a US Department of Veterans Affairs website, in November of 1919 President Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m. On June 1, 1954, President Eisenhower signed HR 7786 which changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day, and November 11th was designated as a day to honor American veterans of all wars. So, this month we will celebrate Veterans Day and honor those who have served in military of the United States of America. There is another definition of a “Veteran” and it is this: a person who has had long experience in a particular field; an old hand; past master; vet; old-timer; old warhorse. Someone who has served a long time, is seasoned, old, hardened, expert, well trained, practiced, experienced, senior, or a diplomat because of their time spent in a particular field. I have been a Christian 29 years, but I do not consider myself a “Veteran” of Christianity. Why is that? Even though I have been reading the Bible throughout these years, I find I am continually learning more about God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and myself. I am learning complicated, yet simple things. I am seeing things again, yet new for the first time. I am hearing from God, feeling the joy of Jesus Christ, yet enjoying a peace that only the Holy Spirit can give. Although I have read it many times and heard sermons about it before, it has been impressed on me to pray Philippians 4:6 over the past several days. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God.” NASB Be anxious for nothing! Pray about everything! Two statements I have heard from Peter Helgerson several times, but God has been speaking to me again and asking me to put it into action. Then I am reminded of Psalms 46:10a “Be still, and know that I am God;” NKJV Am I a veteran? Yes and No. Yes, I served in the Army and I am a Vietnam era Veteran. No, I cannot call myself a veteran of the Christian faith. But I will say, God is still working on me. Isaiah 64:8, “But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.” NASB You see, the Potter (God) is still working on this clay (me).

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES

BEST IN SHOW ! WINNER

november Update!

The outdoor ride-in component of the TRO Championship Bike Show Series closed out with the Iron Pony Show in Westerville and then the Devil’s Staircase Bike Show in Oregonia. While weather was a challenge for the Hillclimb show – the skies cleared and the Iron Pony Bike Show proved to be one of the best of the year. A wide range of bikes came from across the state to exhibit at the State’s Largest Motorcycle Superstore! Clint McFree (seen above) came up from Southern Ohio to snag the Best of Show Awards while Terry & Rebekah McGiniss won the People’s Choice Award. Competition was fierce though, as virtually any of the Best in Class and Judges Choice Winners (OVER 30!) could have potentially won either award.

Next up for Series Exhibitors are the Indoor Shows. Easyriders Bike Show January 5, 2019 Duke Energy Center, Cincinnati For 2019, the folks at Easyriders Events decided to change things up and re-arrange their schedule. Instead of hosting the Columbus show at the end of the series – they moved it up and re-located the show to Cincinnati. The Duke Energy Center is a great

location and offers more flexibility for Bike Show exhibitors. We’ve done a number of shows there over the years and it’s always been a great venue to work with. For those participating in the show, you’ll want to go online at EasyridersEvents.com to get your registration information. Registration is free to exhibit your bike(s), but you’ll need to get your own wristbands to attend the show. Piston Power Show March 1517, 2019 I-X Center, Cleveland The Piston Power Show has undergone a number of changes the last several years, adapting the ISCA Judging and changing up the Awards and Prizes. Thunder Roads Ohio, though, will still be hosting a Thunder Zone Exhibit area for motorcycles and presenting the People’s Choice Award for favorite overall bike at the show. Series Exhibitors interested in participating in the Piston Power Show and exhibiting in the Thunder Zone motorcycle area should email us at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com and include photos of the motorcycle(s) you’d like to bring. Priority will be given to those already placing or winning at TRO Bike Show Series events previously, but consideration will be given to all submitted. This show will now be a qualifier for the TRO Championship Show held at Ohio Bike Week.

2019 Work has already begun on next year’s shows – both for the summer and some possible early season shows. We may also be adding a few more “winter shows” to get people going during the cold weather months. Our plan is to add at least 6-10 new shows to the series, adding additional dates in the Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland markets while expanding to several new cities as well. We will be adding a few early season shows leading up to the Championship Show in Sandusky during Ohio Bike Week. These will be the last chance for folks to qualify for the Championship Invitations and allow a last minute tune-up before competing for the big prize money. If you’d like to recommend a show location or have a venue you could host a show at yourself, please email us at BikeShowInfo@gmail. com as soon as possible. Over the last several years, the Iron Cowboy Road Crew has fine tuned things fairly well and the shows are easy to host. We bring in everything needed for the Bike Show and can assist with other aspects as well – everything from vendors and music, to sponsors and operational planning. Venues just need to play host to all the folks attending over the 3-6 hours that we are running things. We take care of everything else!

MORE STOPS! MORE PRIZES! YEAR ROUND STOPS! SIMPLE DIGITAL CHECK-IN’S! “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOPS!” PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is proud to present the 2018 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you win by simply getting out to ride!

HERE’s HOW YOU WIN!

Checking in at Ride Stops! Designated Ride Stops are listed at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and featured throughout each issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Some will have Ride Stop Clipboard for you to sign in on. You simply have to write down your Ride Card #, your name, and your zip code. Most have moved to digital check-in’s, though. It’s quick and even easier – see below. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.

Checking in at TRO Tour Stops!

Throughout the year, the TRO ROAD CREW will be hitting rides, rallies, bike shows, and various events throughout the state – and beyond! Anywhere the TRO CREW is at – instantly becomes a RIDE STOP! There is a listing of Tour Stops in the magazine and online each month. You can sign in on the Ride Stop Clipboard, just like a regular Ride Stop.

“MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP!” – NEW FOR 2018!

For 2018, we’ve added another option to WIN – by which Riders can recommend a RIDE STOP by simply “Checking-In” through their facebook account with the hashtag #TRO. Within the post, BTR Riders should say that they are “Making this their Ride Stop” and that we should also. You can also include why – and even do it all within in a posted video as well. Special prizes each month are allocated for these check-in’s and the stop itself can win – if applicable. Selected “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP’s” have a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes – and each posting increases their chances to win! In such cases, the person(s) nominating the Stop with their check-in is also eligible for additional prizes as well.

$500 Amazon® Gift Card to be awarded to a chosen Rider nominating a Winning Stop with their check-in!

RIDERS CAN CHECK IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-IN’s AND INSTANT PRIZES! And it’s SIMPLE – 1. TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AT THE LOCATION. 2. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER.

3. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #TRO 4. It’s that simple. FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS.

The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider trekking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the "drawing" - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That's the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number on our website and sometimes in the magazine as well. both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to "claim" their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in's. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in's for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in's season long. • ALL CHECK-IN's remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday) SOCIAL MEDIA WINNERS Each month, the TRO Crew will randomly select WINNERS that have checked in through their social media with the #TRO hashtag. If their Ride Card is visible, we will register the Card Number as a winner and possibly send notification through email. In most cases, though, we will contact through your social media and the winning post. Digital winners have 15 days to contact TRO in regards to the prizes. In some cases, there may be less time due to constraints regarding the prize(s) – such as tickets for a particular concert.

It's really that simple!

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. Make sure you like us at www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card or check in with the #TRO Hashtag on social media. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number!

Just Get Out and RIDE!

This is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

VETERANS RESOURCES Every day, more than 400 World War II veterans die. Of the 16 million who served during that war, less than 900,000 are still alive. The Korean and Vietnam veterans are dying at the rate of around 350 a day. Possibly far more alarming, though, is a report cited in Stars & Stripes that states that an average of 20 veterans and active-duty servicemembers commit suicide every day. These are avoidable casualties amongst our modern era Veterans. (Stars & Stripes, June 20, 2018) As fellow Veterans, as Civilians, as those with family members that have served. We ALL must come together to address both this tragedy and recognize the loss of our older Veterans that both witnessed history and paved the way for the Freedoms we have today. One of my Grandfathers served in the Pacific during World War II with the 10th Army HQ in Communications. While the US Forces advanced on Japan, he frequently volunteered to go on advance reconnaissance – often behind enemy lines – as a radio operator. In such a capacity he went in as part of an advance team onto the island of Okinawa before the assault – in order to assist in directing the bombardment and provide information from the ground. He also volunteered to serve as the radioman on long range reconnaissance flights – doing bomb damage assessments after the heavy raids on islands and eventually Japan itself. By volunteering he helped relieve air crews that were essentially flying around the clock in many cases. These flights included one over Nagasaki just days after it was bombed. My Grandfather rarely spoke of such images, but he had thousands of life lessons learned through those days that still impact our family to this day. We lost him a few years ago, the day after Christmas. To the day he died, his hands still shook from the medication that he took during the war to allow him to go days without sleep. It was a sacrifice that I never heard him complain of. My other Grandfather volunteered straight out of high school and had to have his mom sign off on the paperwork as he was only 17. He served in the Navy – and is still sharing stories to this day.

32

My Grandparents and thousands of other Senior Veterans represent a piece of history – our nation’s history. And every time we lose one, we lose a piece of history. This is just as true of our modern Veterans and those that have fought in conflicts in Asia, Middle East, or anywhere a line was drawn or action was needed. These men and women deserve our gratitude for their willingness to serve this country and help protect our rights and freedom. Anytime we exercise the freedom of speech, to vote, to move freely about the country, to protect your family, and gather in your house of worship – you should thank a Veteran. Today, things have certainly changed since my Grandparents returned from World War II. Our society has changed – and the black and white world which our military is forced to operate within doesn’t exist back home. Many Veterans struggle with transition and there are horrible statistics to demonstrate that this is one battle we seem to be losing as a nation – and that’s simply unacceptable. While it’s great for us to recognize and thank our Veteran’s – we believe that’s it’s more important to help support and provide resources that can assist in the transition to civilian life. It’s important to recognize the sacrifices that Veterans and their Families have made – but even more important to do something about it. To this end, we’ve prepared some materials here for those that have served and their families. Some information on resources and service available, along with profiles of various support and social groups available for Veterans. My grandfather never seemed to take advantage of any of the opportunities offered to him as a Veteran. Some of that may have been pride and the perspective of another era, but it may also be due to the fact that he was unaware. We’re hoping that by providing the information here and in subsequent regular Veterans sections of our magazine and website – we might encourage others to.

Chained Eagles of Ohio Chained Eagles was created by 4 Viet Nam Vets - Jim Rainsburg, Doug Howard, Gary McCoy Sr. and Rex Schoonover in response to the Vietnam POW/MIA issue. The mission was to account for all men listed as missing and yet may still be alive. We created the Ohio POW/MIA Wall to honor the men from Ohio and to keep educating the people to not allow this to happen again. Each year we host a Poker Run out of Jim’s Harley in Mendon Ohio to raise money for our Annual Dayton VA picnic. We offer a hot meal, entertainment and gifts in appreciation of their sacrifices. The gifts range from personal hygiene items to new clothes. Everything we take down stays for the Vets. We also go down for Bingo a few times during the year. We can do all this, thanks to the support we receive from the poker run, donations and other fundraisers. The Chained Eagles don’t keep any of the money raised. We also help other local organizations and participate in events that help Veterans. We do our best to take the Wall to as many places as we can for awareness and to honor all Veterans. The biggest mistake people make about the Chained Eagles is thinking we are a Motorcycle Club. We are a non-profit organization. A lot of us ride and we consider that a privilege because of the Veterans that fought for our freedoms. The other misconception is that we are not “the Chained Eagles”. Our organization is named for “the Chained Eagles” that we stand for.

You can contact us on Facebook -

Chained Eagles of Ohio.

BRING THEM ALL HOME Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association We are an Association of Combat Veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who ride motorcycles as a hobby. Our mission now is to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms. Our membership is comprised of Full Members (those with verified combat service) and Supporter Members (those who have non-combat military service and have a sincere dedication to helping veterans). Many members continue to serve in our Armed Forces, with several serving in combat areas now. Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association has over 250 Chapters in all 50 states, along with 2 in Germany and 1 in South Korea. One of the great aspects of this organization is that each Chapter can decide which Veteran issue(s) they wish to focus on to best serve our nation’s heroes in their respective Veteran community. Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Ohio Chapter 12-7 serving the greater Cleveland area, has made it our mission to support Veterans dealing with Combat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injuries and other Combat-related traumas. Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

Riding in the Rain, Sport-Touring Style I’m on the road going to rallies about sixty days per year. Almost half of them are travel days- going to and from a rally, 200-700 miles per day, mostly on highways and interstates. I use the “GetThere-Dry” website and other techniques to avoid riding in the rain, but sometimes there is no choice. A 300+ mile day of rain, including some heavy showers, is a fact of life at least a few times per season. This month we’ll talk about how to ride on rainy days with greater safety and comfort.

Pinlock insert, which has a sealed dry airspace between it and the visor and a fog-resistant layer on the side facing the rider. The detents on the visor flip-up mechanism hold it firmly in all positions and a rubber lip seals it to the helmet when fully closed. If you can ride with it fully closed and not fog it up with your breath, the inside surface stays free of water droplets, greatly improving your visibility.

Four Safety Factors I’ve always had a “push onward regardless” mindset about the weather but, have come to balance it with “discretion is the better part of valor.” Here are the main safety factors I consider when faced with a day of riding in the rain: visibility, temperature, wind and traction.

The bike’s windshield is used in combination with the visor. The electric adjustable windshield found on the Yamaha FJR and some other sport-touring bikes makes the windshield an even more powerful tool to aid visibility. Here’s how they work together.

Visibility- If there is so much rain, spray or fog that you cannot safely see road conditions ahead, the traffic behind probably can’t see you either. Get off the road and take shelter if you can’t see. Temperature- Worst case scenario- having to ride in wet freezing conditions. The only thing slicker than snow or ice is wet ice. Even if temperatures are in the 40s or 50s, cold water can suck heat out of your body quickly. If your clothing gets wet as well, it loses its insulating ability and makes hypothermia a greater danger. Wind- If it’s going to be windy, especially side winds or gusty, it may be safer to wait out the rain. Passing or being passed by big trucks is dicey in these conditions. Traction- The Michelin PR4GT tires on my FJR are great. They retain over 80% of their traction on wet pavement, but that comes with some caveats. If the pavement has standing water on it, tar snakes, sand that’s washed out on the road or there’s a puddle that’s even half an inch deep, you may suddenly have very little traction. Finally, there’s the condition of the tire itself. Look at your tires. Tread that’s down near the wear bars can’t handle as much moisture as a fresh tire with plenty of tread. If the center of either tire is bald, you need to make other plans for the day. Making the Best of a Rainy Day Once you’ve assessed the safety factors and decided to ride in the rain, it’s time to take all the steps you can to maximize visibility and comfort. Here’s what I do:

Let’s say we’re riding down the highway at 70 MPH and light rain starts. I can put the windshield up all the way so that the top edge is even with the top of my helmet. (I put pieces of duct tape across the top of the windshield to make it easy to see where it cuts my line of vision.) It stops or deflects virtually all the raindrops, keeping me dry. When water droplets start to accumulate on the visor, I can lower the windshield (range is about seven inches) for a few seconds, blow most of the droplets off the visor and raise the windshield back up.

Visibility- Being able to see the road surface and other traffic is essential. I start with Plastic Rain-X, which is applied to the windshield, mirrors, helmet visor and eyeglasses. It is best applied to clean, dry surfaces, so do it ahead of time- don’t wait until it’s already raining. Rain-X causes water to bead up and blow off surfaces more easily, making vision clearer. Another strategy to improve visibility is minimizing the number of surfaces between your eyes and the road. (Tip: If you have good distance vision, put your eyeglasses away.) The best single piece of equipment for visibility in the rain is a good full-face helmet. I wear a Shoei GTAir, which has good internal ventilation and an excellent visor. The visor comes with a 46 46

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

This works well even in heavier rain until I get into fog or prolonged spray from trucks. Then the Rain-X no longer keeps the windshield clear enough that you can see through it clearly. Traffic often slows down in these conditions as well and the lower air velocity and flow may cause the visor to fog up. Lowering the windshield at this point increases air flow to the visor and may be enough to keep it clear. If not, there is no choice but to raise the visor about an inch to increase air flow on the back side and evaporate the fog. Unfortunately, that breaks the seal between the visor and the helmet, allowing water droplets to run down the back side of it. These droplets can be reduced by lowering the windshield all the way, flipping the visor all the way up, and tipping one’s head back to let the wind blow the water droplets off both surfaces of the visor.

In heavy rain, I usually run the visor part way open as shown in the photo and adjust the windshield, so it is just high enough to deflect raindrops from hitting my face directly through the gap at the bottom of the visor. What do you do if you don’t have an electric adjustable windshield? Back then I chose a windshield whose top edge crossed my line of sight about forty feet down the road in my normal seating position. Then I could slouch when it needed to be higher and sit up straight when I wanted it lower.

of the jacket. Great for both fair weather and foul. If I think it’s going to rain, I wear the liner on the outside of the jacket. If I expect a downpour or many miles of rain, I add a Frogg Toggs jacket and pants as an additional waterproof layer. They weigh almost nothing and can pack in the lid of a saddlebag. If I need warmth, I add a FirstGear electric heated jacket liner and possibly heated pants. (Tip: With any rain gear it’s extremely important to get it sealed up tight around your neck. Otherwise water trickles down and soaks everything underneath.) The final detail is gloves. I have a pair of Sealskinz gloves that are 100% waterproof. I either wear them or an expendable pair of old summer riding gloves that I don’t care about getting wet. (The FJR has hand shields and heated grips so insulating my hands doesn’t matter much.) There is always debate on whether to wear the glove gauntlet on the inside or outside of the jacket cuff. I choose inside as the Olympia liner and Frogg Toggs jacket both have tight fitting, elastic cuffs. Your hands will get wet regardless but that’s what works best for me. I would close with “Happy riding!” but will settle for “Hope you can stay safer and drier!”

Comfort is mostly controlled by what you wear under various conditions. On a hot humid day, I am loathing to put on rain gear unless it’s raining hard enough that it’s not going to be a steam bath with the rain gear on. I’ll wait as long as possible, playing the oncoming windshield wipers game, watching radar and seeing how wet I get. Unfortunately, I often wait too long and am already wet by the time I finally get the rain gear on. If the rain is cold and a big drop in temperature arrives with it, getting wet like this is a very bad idea!

I like to be at least partially prepared for rain at all times, so I wear Sidi Gore-tex waterproof boots and nonmesh armored Revit waterproof riding pants. My jacket is an Olympia mesh with waterproof/windproof liner that can be worn on the inside or outside THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

TECH TIPS WINTERIZE YOUR BIKE

substances that can affect the carburetor. Run the bike so the gas and fuel stabilizer get to the carburetor and fuel injectors.then turn off the fuel and run it dry. It’s important to note that you DON’T want to leave any Ethanol blended gas in your tank for any extended period of time. The ethanol will absorb the moisture and develop a thick sludge within the tank.

While I make every effort to ride year round, the reality is that not only do I live in Ohio - I live in the “Snow Belt”. Some “hard core” riders scoff at the idea of storing your bike, but reality is that at the very least you will be riding her less. This is especially important if you have more than one bike. One of the worst things you can do to your motorcycle - especially the engine - is to simply leave it sitting there. Rust starts to form everywhere, rubber seals and o-rings dry out and harden, and your gas degrades (especially if you have any Ethanol in it). If you simply push your bike into the corner of your garage and walk away for a few months - don’t be surprised if it won’t run in the spring. If you want it to fire up and run first thing when you want it - you need to take care of it and properly winterize it. The following is a general list of items that you should consider as you prepare your bike for storage. Of course, all bikes are different and many have unique needs. Check your manual or with a service tech for advice as to your bike’s specific needs.

The “stuff” you’ll need. You will need, cleaning cloths, spark plug wrench, a trickle battery charger, four or five quarts of high quality oil, new oil filter, oil can or device to get oil in the cylinders, chain lube (if you have a chain drive), fuel stabilizer, spray can of WD40, a breathable motorcycle cover, kitchen plastic wrap, rubber bands, vinyl or plastic gloves, items to clean and wax your bike. Lastly a nice location for the bike to spend the winter, a heated secure garage would be ideal. Avoid wind, dripping water, vermin, mildew, and chemical fumes.

48 48

3. Drain your Float Bowls, if you have a carburetor. 1. Clean your Bike. A gentle wash detergent and water will suffice. By removing road grime and insects you will protect the finish of the bike. Avoid spraying water directly into the opening of the muffler. If baffles get wet and are not dried prior storage, internal rust could result. Likewise avoid moisture in the air cleaner housing. If the housing becomes saturated, it could act as a choke, making your bike difficult to start. Use a blow dryer, leaf blower, or a commercial motorcycle blower to dry and then detail with a good chamois. Clean and polish all aluminum and stainless surfaces with the appropriate metal polish. Finally finish up with a coat of good wax polish on all painted and chrome surfaces. Clean the chain (if you have one). Spray off all the built up residues with WD40. Lube the chain.

2. Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank. Fill your tank with gas as full as it can go. This is very important. As fuel ages, more volatile components tend to change, leaving sludge and gummy

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

Shut off the gas petcock and drain the gas from the carburetor bowls. Consult your manual for location of drain screws. Of course if you have a fuel-injected bike, there isn’t anything to drain.

4. Change your Oil Oil chemistry changes over periods of extended storage. Old oil can develop acidic qualities, which can corrode engine parts.

5. Oil the front forks. Using a “turkey baster” put oil over the stationary tubes on the front forks. Then get onto the bike and bounce the bike up and down, while holding the front brake. This will work the front suspension and spread the oil. The oil will keep the rubber seals from drying out and protect the exposed fork tubes.

6. Pull the Spark Plugs Remove spark plug wires, and carefully with a spark plug wrench remove the plugs. With your oil-squirting device, get some motor oil in the cylinders. Approximately one teaspoon of oil will work well. Tuck the plug wires away somewhere safe so they do not arc, then spin the motor with the starter for a few revolutions to get the oil spread around. Remember to keep your face away from the spark plug holes. Oil will squirt out! Clean and gap the plugs and put them back in. Replace plug wires.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! 7. Remove the Battery

Check the tire pressure. Adjust as needed and leave a reminder to check in Spring. Cleaning the chrome and aluminum parts on your bike - especially rims - with a good polish will keep them relatively clean and easier for Spring clean up. A light coating of silicone lube will give limited protection while in storage. It will need to be washed off before taking out when the weather breaks.

10. Check the “little things” Some batteries may require charging every four weeks with a “Battery Tender” type of charger. Built up sulfates on the plates can ruin a battery during cold storage and inactivity. A thin coat of Vaseline to the terminals on the battery can prevent corrosion. This small step will mean an easier spring start up and no extra cost of battery replacement.

8. Check your coolant.

(If you have a liquid cooling system on your bike.) Check it’s level of anti-freeze with a hygrometer. Drain, flush and replace antifreeze if necessary. We suggest this replacement be done every two years. Do not leave the antifreeze level low or empty, this could lead to rust or corrosion of the cooling system. Check all other fluid levels at this time.

9. Check your Tires and Wheels.

Lube your cables. Lube suspension and pivot points. Lube the drive shaft (if you have one). Check the air cleaner and the fuel filter. Look at brake pads. Give your bike a good once over.

11. Clean and Treat all Leather and Vinyl Detail your leathers with a cleaner or conditioner such as Eagle One Carnuba Leather Cream or Mother’s Leather Cleaner. While you have it out, this is a great time to clean up your leather riding gear as well. After the cleaner or conditioner is dry, buff with a soft cloth. There are several good vinyl cleaners you can use - and then follow with a vinyl protector..

temperatures may affect sensitive gauges and other equipment during winter storage. Why risk it?

14. Store the Bike If your storage location is bare concrete, we suggest using a piece of plywood, MDF, or old thick carpet. This will insulate the bike from becoming damp. We also suggest storing your bike with all the weight removed from the wheels. A bike stand or some blocking works if you have a wheeled lift. A center stand and some blocking will work too. Do not store your bike near any ozone emitting devices, such as motors, freezers, furnaces or electric heaters. The gasses they create will deteriorate rubber parts. Cover your motorcycle with a good breathable cover or a soft cotton bed sheet to keep the dust off. This does not prevent condensation from forming on your ride, but it keeps dust, etc. off the motorcycle.

14. DON’T run the engine for short periods of time over the storage period, this can lead to condensation due to engine and combustion byproducts in the oil. With the battery tender on there is no reason for this.

12. Protect the Metal With a clean cloth, wipe good quality light machine oil over all the metal surfaces, except the disc brakes. Spray a little WD40 in the tail pipe(s). Cover your tail pipe opening and the air intake with plastic wrap and a rubber band. You can also cover drain hoses as well. This will prevent any opportunistic pests from making a cozy winter home in your bike.

13. Remove the Accessories Take off any removable accessories, especially electronics or temperature sensitive items. If you have a “Temp Oil Gauge” dipstick - remove it and replace it with the original. Store the “Temp Gauge” in a warm place for the winter. MC Clubber – A Dying Breed

Do you remember when accomplishments were earned? When you felt Pride in setting a goal, working hard, and achieving an accomplishment. We often see people bitching about the “Me Too” generation. Where everyone receives a participation trophy, and we cringe. Yet, that’s exactly what is happening in the MC Community. A vast generation of new MC Members don’t want to earn anything, they want it handed to them. I’ve heard every excuse about not wanting to probate. “I am too old”. “I don’t have the time”. “I’m a grown man, I don’t take orders from people”. To all of that I say, you have no place in the MC community.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Tested: Inland Manufacturing M37 Trench Shotgun

by B. Gil Horman Founded in 2013, Inland Manufacturing is a company dedicated to producing faithful replicas of World War II-era firearms here in the United States. The company’s first offerings included G.I.- type 1911 pistols and several versions of the M1 Carbine. New for 2016, Inland is offering a replica of the 12- ga. Ithaca Model 37 “trench gun” (or riot gun) shotgun.

I had an opportunity to meet with Ron Norton, president of Inland Manufacturing, to learn more about what precipitated the release of this shotgun. He said several factors played a role. The company had plans to provide World War II re-enactors and those who wish to participate in period 3-gun competitions with a complete set of firearms, so a shotgun was needed to round out the pistol and rifle offerings. Their research confirmed that the Ithaca Model 37 was one of the most highly sought-after models of the era because of its reliability and smooth operation. Since it has been out of production for over 40 years, an historically accurate replica would be of real interest to collectors as well as re-enactors. To ensure the authenticity, quality and reliability of its new M37, Inland teamed up with the Ithaca Gun Company, whose headquarters are just 80 miles away from the Inland plant. As a result, the M37 looks right, runs nicely and is 100 percent American made. The new M37 is a manually operated pump-action 12ga. shotgun with a 3” chamber. Despite its vintage appearance, this shotgun is manufactured using modern materials and up-to-date manufacturing techniques. This means the M37 can safely fire shotgun shells loaded to standard, high velocity and magnum pressure levels with payloads including birdshot, buckshot and slugs. The shotgun is made entirely from carbon steel treated with a matte-black Parkerized finish. The only piece of polymer to be 54

found is the black butt plate attached to the shoulder stock. The 20” barrel features a fixed-cylinder bore choke and a beadtype front sight. Clamped to the muzzle is the distictive M1917 Bayonet lug, with an integral shoulder sling loop, which also supports a 12” long ventilated heat shield, or handguard if you prefer. The tubular magazine located below the barrel accepts up to four 12-ga. shells for a total of five shots with one in the chamber.

The sliding fore-end is fitted with a rounded and grooved walnut grip with a plain nonreflective oil finish. Most current production shotguns have slides fitted with a left- and right-side extension to engage the bolt assembly. But true to form, the M37 has only the left-side extension.

The steel receiver follows the Browning Model 17 design, which means it does not have the right-side ejection port found on Remington, Winchester and Mossberg shotguns. Instead, spent shell casings are ejected downward out of the loading port. This feature gives the shotgun a tactical advantage in that it does not advertise the operator’s location by flinging spent shells sideways into the air. It also means

shooting companions standing to the right won’t need to dodge flying hulls. The top of the receiver is grooved to reduce glare.

The rounded trigger guard is a combatready steel model that can certainly handle more abuse than the less durable polymer guards commonly found on sporting shotguns these days. The slide release rests along the right side of the trigger guard with the cross-bolt safety located behind the trigger. It’s interesting to note that the safety has an exposed detent on the left side which is something you don’t see in newer models.

The trigger is a smooth-faced steel bow with a refined feel that can easily compete with the best tuned 1911 triggers on the market. It was exceptionally smooth with no take-up and a very short arch of travel (0.02” according to my digital calipers). The trigger broke cleanly with 4 lbs. 7 oz. of trigger pull. It should be noted here that the trigger mechanism of the M37 will not allow the gun to “slam fire.” The original Ithaca 37 allowed the operator to hold the trigger

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. www.buckeyefirearms.org

down causing the shotgun to fire as each round was “slammed” into the chamber. This means the gun would fire as fast as the solider could work the slide. The Inland M37 requires the trigger to be cycled for each shot and will not fire if the trigger is held down as a round is chambered.

The smooth, unembellished solid-walnut shoulder stock has a traditional pistol grip and is tightly fitted to the receiver. The polymer butt plate is partially serrated and held in place by two screws. A second steel sling mount is located near the butt plate. I put the M37 through its paces at the shooting range with a mix of low and high brass in 2¾” and 3” 12-ga. shotgun shells. I soon learned that under this shotgun’s gruff combat exterior was a precision-machined mechanism that would be at home in a top-notch competition gun. Everything about its operation was smooth and comfortable to work with. The movement of the slide, the interior of the loading port, the trigger, and the loading and ejection of ammunition: it was all buttery smooth.

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

The M37 was also reliable. I had no ammunition related or mechanical problems in the course of testing. The shotgun was patterned with four different loads. It was fired from a standing position into OPSGEAR RED Silhouette paper targets set at 7 yards from the muzzle. Federal Premium offers a devastating 3” high brass Magnum load stuffed with 41 pellets of #4 Buckshot that fly along at 1100 fps. I always bear down and get ready for the recoil produced by this shell but it still rocks me back each time. The #4 buckshot spread out to form an 8.50” pattern. Hornady’s Critical Defense 2¾” high brass round is loaded with 8 pellets of 00 Buckshot to a velocity of 1600 fps. It had a more manageable level of felt recoil and formed the tightest group of the test with a pattern of just 2.50”. Inland Manufacturing’s new M37 Trench Shotgun, built in conjunction with Ithaca Gun Manufacturing, is a faithful replica of an iconic shotgun that collectors and shooting enthusiasts can both enjoy. Like other Inland offerings, this shotgun exhibits meticulous attention to detail while providing a high level of quality and reliability. Take the M37 out for a spin on the WWII re-enactment shooting circuit or stage it as a home-defense gun, it can easily serve in either capacity.

RECIPES

For those days when you REALLY NEED comfort food this is a great dish!! Plus it has bacon and bacon makes everything better lol

This is one of THE easiest soups you will ever make but it tastes like its been cooking for DAYS! Chicken and Wild Rice Soup Serves 6 (or 3 hungry bikers) 8 cups chicken stock 5 stalks celery, diced 5 carrots, diced 1 onion, diced 1 tbsp garlic, minced 1 cup uncooked wild rice ½ cup uncooked brown rice 4-5 cups chicken, cooked and diced (I use left overs or rotisserie) 1 can cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken, garlic, celery – whatever you like) 1 tbsp dried basil 1 tbsp dried oregano ½ tbsp. dried, crushed rosemary In a large soup pot, bring the stock to a boil Add in the diced celery, carrots, onions, and garlic, stir well and allow to cook for about 10 minutes, While still boiling add in the wild and brown rice, stir and cook for another 10 minutes on high Lower heat to medium and add in the chicken, cream of mushroom soup, basil, oregano, and rosemary. Stir well and allow to cook for about 10 more minutes then reduce to low and allow to cook for 20 minutes Serve with some nice crusty bread!

Crock Pot Pork Ribs w/Potatoes and Kraut Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 1 slab pork ribs, quartered 1 ½ cups chicken stock ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 6-7 pieces of bacon, diced 1 onion, sliced 3 tbsp minced garlic 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp celery seeds ½ tsp fennel seeds ½ tsp caraway seeds 3-4 lbs baby potatoes, quartered 2 tsp season salt 1 tsp black pepper 32 oz jar or bag of sour kraut, rinsed 1 apple, peeled, seeded and minced (optional for a sweeter taste) you can also cheat and just use a cup of apple sauce Place the 4 sections of ribs into the crock pot and set to high Pour in the chicken stock, vinegar, and cover with lid In a large skillet over high heat add the bacon then allow to cook for about 2-3 minutes Reduce heat to med-high and add in the onions, garlic, mustard seeds, celery seeds, fennel seeds and caraway seeds, stir well Continue cooking until everything begins to caramelize and brown slightly, stirring often so nothing burns Add about ½ cup water or chicken stock to deglaze the pan – all those wonderful brown bits are FULL of flavor Pour bacon mix over the ribs, fat and all! (lol sorry I love the fat) Add in the potatoes, salt, and pepper, give it all a stir and replace lid to continue cooking on high for 3 hours Add the kraut and apple (if using) to the crock pot, stir well, replace lid, and continue to cook another 2-3 hours. Serve with a nice chunk of crusty bread – I prefer sour dough, but any dense bread works well.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... A Drill Sergeant had just chewed out one of his cadets, and as he was walking away, he turned to the cadet and said: “I guess when I die you’ll come and dance on my grave.” The Chief of Staff of the US Air Force decided to personally recruit some pilots and he saw two young twins. He looked at the first young man and asked: “Son, what skills can you bring to the Air Force?” The young man looks at him and says: “I’m a pilot!” The General gets all excited, turns to his aide and says: “Get him in today, all the paper work done, everything, do it!” The aide hustles the young man off. The General looks at the second young man and asks: “What skills to you bring to the Air Force?” The young man says: “I chop wood!” “Son,” the general replies: “We don’t need wood choppers in the Air Force, what do you know how to do?” “I chop wood!” “Young man,” huffs the general, “You are not listening to me, we don’t need wood choppers, this is the 20th century!” “Well,” the young man says, “You hired my brother!” “Of course we did,” says the general, “He’s a pilot!” The young man rolls his eyes and says: “So what! I have to chop it before he can pile it!”

The cadet replied: “Not me, Sarge…no sir!” “I promised myself that when I got out of the Army I’d never stand in another line.”

So, Donald Rumsfeld is briefing George Bush in the Oval Office. “Oh and finally, sir, three Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq today.” Bush goes pale, his jaw hanging open in stunned disbelief. He buries his face in his hands, muttering “My God...My God”. “Mr. President,” says Cheney, “we lose soldiers all the time, and it’s terrible. But I’ve never seen you so upset. What’s the matter?”

The company commander and the sergeant were in the field. As they go to bed for the night, the first sergeant said: “Sir, look up into the sky and tell me what you see?”

Bush looks up and says...”How many is a Brazilian?”

The commander said: “I see millions of stars.” Sgt: “And what does that tell you, sir?” “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Theologically, it tells me that God is great and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it tells me that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Top?”

After numerous rounds of, “We don’t know if Osama is still alive,” Osama himself decided to send Ted Kennedy a letter in his own handwriting to let him know he was still in the game. Kennedy opened the letter which appeared to contain a single line of the coded message, 370HSSV-0773H. Kennedy was baffled, so he e-mailed it to John Kerry.

Sgt: “Well sir, it tells me that somebody stole our tent.” A Sergeant was addressing a squad of 25 and said: “I have a nice easy job for the laziest man here. Put up your hand if you are the laziest.”

Kerry and his aides had no clue either, so they sent it to the FBI. Noone could solve it at the FBI, so it went to the CIA, then to the NSA. With no clue as to its meaning, the FBI finally asked Marine Corps Intelligence for help.

24 men raised their hands, and the sergeant asked the other man “why didn’t you raise your hand?” The man replied: “Too much trouble raising the hand, Sarge.”

Within a few seconds, the Marine Corps cabled back with this reply, “Tell Kennedy he’s holding the message upside down.”
