FROM THE PUBLISHER It was an odd winter, with March seemingly the worst month of the whole season. Thankfully, though, April is upon us and the skies are clearing as we prepare for the traditional start of the riding season. While we spend the summer riding, we spend the winter preparing to ride much like many of you. Our preparations, though, focus far more on the events and destinations rather than work on our bikes unfortunately. We plan out our schedule for the entire summer and chart a crazy route that takes us through bike nights, bike shows, rallies, and rides all across the state and Midwest. The biggest challenge as we plan our route is deciding what events and what stops we should hit. In some cases, we are scouting new ride stops to feature and share with everyone in the magazine. These are events and stops that have been either recommended to us or we’ve heard about during our travels. After each stop, we consider if it’s a place worth coming back to – and worth recommending to our readers. Every business, event, and location featured in our magazine is essentially a recommendation that we are making to you – our readers. And we take this fairly seriously. We want you to be confident that if they are in our magazine – they are a reputable business or an event worth attending. And if you find out otherwise, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible. We’ve never been in the business of simply running ads for anyone willing to hand us a dollar – or even lots of dollars. We do our best to research the events and stop out and make sure that we experience a stop before we run any ads. That’s not always possible and mistakes do happen – and sometimes, we might just miss something. So we ask for everyone’s feedback on the folks we’ve chosen to partner with here in our magazine. As we prepare for our 2017 Thunder Run, I’d like to ask for everyone’s input as to the stops we select this year. What are your favorite stops and which aren’t worth walking across the street to check out? If there’s a place that you’d recommend and possibly even know someone to talk to, I’d encourage you to shoot us an email at buckeyethunderrun@gmail.com. We will check the spot out and if we end up adding it to the Run – we will send you a ROAD CREW T both for your time and to identify you as a member of our “advance team”. On the flip side, if there’s a spot you don’t care for or don’t think we should support – please don’t hesitate to let us know, especially if they are already in our magazine! We’ve reconsidered a number of our partnerships this past year and have dropped quite a few. We want to be able to confidently stand behind anyone in the magazine. We are all in this together, and we appreciate the support that we’ve received over the years. It’s allowed us to become the Largest Regional Motorcycle Magazine in the Nation – and more importantly OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! That’s a title we are grateful for and don’t plan on losing anytime soon.

CLEVELAND BUILDING A MOTOCROSS TRACK! New facility to host races and “decriminalize” dirt bikes within the city. n late January, Cleveland City Council Iconstruction passed legislation allowing for the of a motocross track on the
city’s east side. It’s an ambitious project that involves the landscaping and capping of an area known as Marion Motley Park near East 72nd Street that is considered polluted and in disrepair. Upon this repurposed land, the city would install multiple motocross tracks, a bmx track, and a garage and tower building to support and oversee the area. Preliminary plans outline a motorsports / off-road park with plenty of options for the future. It’s an ambitious project with a 2.3 million dollar price tag and would be the first of its kind in any major American city. City leaders pitched the project as a public improvement project, and critics have bemoaned the idea of spending money on a “race track” instead of investing in law enforcement or other social services. Some proponents consider the motocross facility just that though – an investment in the community, something to get the kids off the streets. In this case, though, that’s meant literally as the city is concerned about both
kids and young adults riding dirt bikes and ATV’s illegally on the city streets. In an amusing twist, it turns out that Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s own grandson is amongst those that have been riding on the city streets and was even involved in an accident while on his dirt bike. One investigative reporter pursued this and was excited to see a dirt bike on the back porch of the mayor’s home. In an interview with the local reporter, Mayor Jackson spoke of his grandson’s passion for riding. “He has a fascination and a love of dirt bikes. He and some of his friends ride dirt bikes even though they are not supposed to ride them on the street. I think he is addicted, to tell you the truth.” While the hard hitting investigative reporter seemed to savor the idea that the Mayor was implicated in his grandson’s illegal riding, we might have the grandson to thank for making Mayor Jackson aware of the appeal of riding. Certainly stunt riding on city streets is dangerous and a real safety concern that can’t be dismissed. But while
Ohio is struggling with a heroin epidemic and countless other challenges, here’s an addiction that we might just have a cure for.
The city of Cleveland is operating under a master plan that calls for “Diverse Recreation Programming” – which is a fancy way to say that not all kids are into basketball and baseball, and the city should offer a variety of options to appeal to a broader range of kids. Community gardens, skateboard parks, mountain bike courses, and yes – a motocross track offer exciting new options

for those looking to get out and do something. It’s also not just drugs or crime that challenges kids these days. Video games, the internet, and even old fashion tv’s seem a drug themselves these days – “doping” our kids and causing them to withdraw from playing outdoors and even social activities. Thankfully, even the most basic 50’ or ATV is more than a match for the lure of a couch or hours in front of a computer screen / tv. We are already seeing this in urban areas – as street stunting and riding dirt bikes on city roads is considered a plague and menace by many. Mayor Jackson’s motocross facility would give inner-city youth the chance to ride and discover a new sport – in a safer, legal setting. It’s also easy to see how the facility might also serve as an introduction to a number of power sport professions for kids considering their future. I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a few of the players involved in this project and I am really amazed by the audacity and forward thinking of those that have brought things forward thus far. One of the most incredible things about this entire story is that they are hoping to have a track in place this fall! Not years down the road, but possibly even 5-6 months from now. There are still a lot of details to be worked out, but the ship has sailed and it certainly seems as though this facility will become a reality. We will continue to cover this story and hope to report on the continued evolution of the facility – even after the first bikes launch from the starting line. There is so much potential to this project, and thankfully the location allows room for possible expansion down the road. The challenge, though, is that the concept and purpose of the facility could easily be lost in the process. Our hope is that the city is able to find good people to manage the facility and it gathers increased support from not only residents but from those within the riding community. Riders, racers, and anyone interested in the future of the motorcycle community should fully embrace this project. My hope is that it is so successful that it becomes a model for other communities across the country. Can you imagine a whole new generation of riders from urban areas and the energy that would bring to our sport? Great stuff. Frankly, I’m more proud as a Clevelander of this than I am of any of the other recent sports successes we’ve enjoyed. Stay tuned for continued coverage right here in TRO!

SUPPORT YOUR MRO’s!
A
s a rider we celebrate our freedom almost as much as the iron we ride. That freedom and the rights that define it are constantly under assault, though. Our freedoms as a nation are defended by our armed services and those that have committed to serving our country. Our freedom and rights as riders are defended by Motorcycle Rights Organizations (MRO’s) such as the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA , www.americanmotorcyclist.com), Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF www. mrf.org), and ABATE (ABATE.com). These organizations work diligently to protect your rights against such challenges as Motorcycle Only Checkpoints (profiling), fuel regulations that impact riders, inconsistent and restrictive helmet laws, and so many other issues. How would you feel if you were pulled over and told that you had to prove ownership of your motorcycle, provide proof of insurance, go through an “equipment inspection”, or possibly even get searched personally – simply because you were riding a motorcycle. Sound crazy? Motorcycle only checkpoints are becoming a reality all across the country – and it’s the MRO’s that are standing up and fighting this violation of your rights. That’s just one example of the work that the Motorcycle Riders Foundation is doing with the support of local organizations such as ABATE of Ohio. These groups, though, all need our support to keep doing the work that many of us take for granted. Right here in Ohio, ABATE is facing some critical challenges in terms of membership and we are asking our readers to step up and answer the call. They have started a new initiative they call the YEAR OF THE MEMBER – and as such you can join ABATE with a friend 2 for 1! Just $20.00 will get you two memberships. Already a member? Renew with a friend or sign up two new members for $20.00. For something more fun, you can also purchase five (5) Bike Raffle tickets and then receive one free membership in ABATE. For just $10 each – you and a friend can join ABATE and support the work that they do for us as riders. HOW CAN YOU SAY NO TO THAT? Better yet, don’t and just go online at ABATE.com and join! Beyond that, though, we would encourage you to take the time and possibly get involved with ABATE. We’ve met a lot of great ABATE folks over the years and their events are always a lot of fun. Our pages are always filled with upcoming ABATE events that you’re welcome to join us at. Coming up this month ABATE of Ohio will be hosting the 2017 State Seminar. This is a big annual event that focuses on legislation, safety and education. It is open to everyone and it’s a great place to learn what is happening with our motorcycling life. You can find all the info online at ABATE.com or call Mike Stock at 419-654-5446. TAKE THE TIME AND JOIN! THE RIGHTS YOU SAVE – MIGHT JUST BE YOUR OWN!

REPORT American Motorcyclist Association announces new era for Gypsy Tours 17 road rides scheduled between March and November The 2017 AMA Gypsy Tour, a national series of premier road-riding events, features 17 road rides between March and November in all sections of the country. AMA Gypsy Tours and the rallies that include them, are among the largest and most popular U.S. motorcycle gatherings. “We have a great slate of rallies on the 2017 Gypsy Tour series,” said Marie Wuelleh, AMA recreational riding and volunteer manager. “These great rides are put together by experienced organizers, who promise all participants a memorable experience.” Originally, a Gypsy Tour was an overnight event with organized road rides and other activities of interest to motorcycle enthusiasts, where groups of riders would converge on a single destination. Gypsy Tours were staged in different parts of the country and typically occurred on the same weekend every year. The “National” Gypsy Tour referred to the whole series of these events. Laconia Motorcycle Week, which dates to 1916, is a 2017 AMA Gypsy Tour Heritage Event and part of the 2017 AMA Gypsy Tour, a national series of premier road-riding events, which has been newly reorganized for the 2017 riding season. “We are proud that this event has been running for so long, and we are happy to be a part of the 2017 AMA Gypsy Tour series,” said Charlie St. Clair, executive director of Laconia Motorcycle Week. The original Laconia event was a social gathering of about 150 riders organized by the Bay State Motorcycle Club riders and New Hampshire Motorcyclists at Weir Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee near Laconia, N.H. Over the years, the event grew to attract as many as 430,000 motorcyclists. The AMA has been sanctioning Gypsy Tours since 1924.
The schedule for the 2017 AMA Gypsy Tour, a national series of premier road-riding events includes: March 10-19: AMA Gypsy Tour at Bike Week, Daytona Beach, Fla. ABATE OF OHIO, INC.
SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, It is April and Motorcycle Season is here. We have already had some very nice days and with those came crashes with some fatalities. The crashes that I have been able to review have told me that over winter, we forgot how to negotiate curves, slow down, watch for distracted drivers and not ride impaired. At this time in 2016 we had 67 crashes with 3 fatalities and 47 injuries. In 2017 to date we have had 76 crashes with 3 fatalities and 62 injuries. Injuries and fatalities do not add up to total crashes because some lucky ones do walk away unharmed. However, as you can see in this short two month period, we have had significantly more injury crashes. Please ride SMART: Ride Sober, Ride Motorcycle Endorsed, Ride Alert, Right Gear and Ride Trained. Motorcycle Ohio is up and running. Call 1-614466-4041 or go on line to motorcycleohio.gov and get into a class. If you have never taken a class you will learn something. If you have been riding on a temporary permit every year, take a class and walk away with your endorsement. If you are an experienced rider with no endorsement you can take a one day course and get your endorsement. If you want to make some extra money, become an instructor and gt paid an average of $26.00 an hour to play on your motorcycle.
Spring is here and it’s time to get those “Look Twice Save a Life” signs out in your yard, still priced at $10.00. Check with your local ABATE member and he or she will get you one. You can also contact me at 419-654-5446 and I will help. The more we make motorists aware, the more they will look out for us. Pick up a “Look Out for Motorcycles” magnet for your vehicle because they are free. If anyone has a spot for a 3X6 “Look Twice Save a Life” sign, it is two sided and only costs $35.00. For all signs check with the ABATE office 1-800-25-BIKER or ABATE.com and someone will get them to you. There is a picture in this Outspokin’ of a sign made by Donnie and Mark Kalb in Colorado. To get it to Donnie’s sister in Holgate, OH they took it to the Meeting of the Minds in Oklahoma City last year, had ABATE of Michigan members take it to Lansing, MI, Ed picked it up at the Michigan Seminar and took it to Columbus with him and Ed & I finally delivered it to Holgate last week. The sign is on OH 108 in Holgate for everyone to see look Twice Save a Life. We get the job done! May 2017 is Motorcycle Awareness Month. As in the past, ABATE of Ohio Inc. will be holding the Motorcycle Awareness Rally and After Rally Party. The day will start at A.D. Farrow Harley Davidson, sign in at 9:30am parade leaving at 12:00noon for the Ohio State House. It’s great when we shut down I71 to downtown. It lets everyone know that we are back on the roads for the season. This is one ride that brings bikes from every corner of the state.
LEGISLATIVE REPORT Greetings, All:
Well, things are really starting to heat up, now that we are four months into the new Legislative Sessions. On Feb.28, a strategy/discussion meeting was held in Rep. Landis› office in regard to the Road Guard Bill introduced in the previous session (HB115). In attendance were Reps. Landis and Green, the co-sponsors, Jim Elgin, COB/Abate, and myself. During the discussion, changes in the verbiage of the bill, possible additions and subtractions to the bill, and discussions with safety forces to further define their objections to the bill were examined to make the bill more acceptable. As further developments arise, they will be passed along as they occur. Some bad news came along regarding the passage of HB 154 (Ohio) in the last session, regarding the red light component of this bill. Originally, the intent was meant for bicycles only, but when the bill was drafted and signed, it included all vehicles. The House has passed an amendment to the original legislation amending for bicycles only, it has been passed to the Senate, where at this writing, I have not been able to track down any reference to it. My next move is get with sponsors on the Senate side, to voice motorcyclists’ concerns that we also have a stake in this issue.
As you all know, the Awareness Rally is rapidly approaching, with the entire state securing proclamations for May as Motorcycling Awareness Month in Ohio. I have requested a proclamation from Gov. Kasich›s office and also extended an invitation to the Governor to read his proc. at the
Around the country, at least eight states are dealing with helmet modifications, at least six are dealing with Autocycle issues and 10 are looking at profiling legislation. Rest assured, these issues are also being examined here in Ohio, and appropriate action will be forthcoming, if warranted.

Statehouse. Please bring everyone you know to this critical event, in an attempt to get roadway users to pay attention to the increased presence of motorcyclists on the road. 600 hundred motorcycles under Police escort rolling down 71S would make a serious statement! See you there!! By the time this article gets to your mailbox or magazine, the Legislative Seminar will be eminent (April 7/8). Planning continues for this event as well, (and I imagine will be an ongoing process up until and including during the event). Once again, I urge all to attend to get informed on the latest issues and strategies facing us, the riding community. Now that we are nearing riding season, please make an attempt to get out of your region/county to attend an event or meeting. Sometimes we become insulated in our own little corner of the spectrum, and getting out supporting another County›s event or attending a meeting out of your area can be beneficial. Get a new perspective, make some new friends, strengthen our unity, and have some fun doing it. As I sit watching the snow and listening to the howling wind I realize that Winter is not yet ready to release it’s hold on Northeast Ohio. Normally this time of year we would be in Daytona enjoying Bike Week. We decided to pass this year. In hindsight maybe that wasn’t the smartest decision we have made. Instead I am looking at my calendar planning out our Spring and Summer. In addition to our normal riding and events we attend there are a few things I would like to do and cover in the upcoming months. A good friend of ours has a young son who will be doing some track days and racing at Smith Road Raceway in Medina. I haven’t followed motocross much and this will be an opportunity to check things out on a more personal level. Also it will be an opportunity to provide those of you that have youngsters interested in riding and perhaps racing additional information on where to start. I will continue to cover track days at a few venues and Vintage Days at MidOhio Sportscar Course is always on our list. My husband and I have already reserved a campsite at PittRace for MotoAmerica. This is a three day event the weekend of August 25-28. There is a young man I have watched from our days at Motoseries who has qualified to run in this difficult series. I am looking forward to writing his Racer Profile. Racing at this level takes not only talent but sacrifices for the racer and family. Racing is an expensive sport. Dedication is a must. The riding community encompasses many things---from street to track--there is something out there that will fit your interests and lifestyle on two wheels. As always ride safe. Denise Kennedy

After All Last year we had a scriptural theme from Philippians 4:4 & 5, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.” NASB. Messages delivered based on these scripture verses were powerful and anointed as the verses were dissected and applied to daily living. Those who heard those messages learned the value of rejoicing in the Lord always and how that was even possible when things looked bleak. How is that possible, you ask? Romans 5:1, tells us, “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.” NASB. In other words our circumstances do not change the fact we have been forgiven by God for our sins against Him. We can, and do, continually rejoice in that!
We also learned how close the Lord really is to us during our daily living of life. In Nahum 1:7, “The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him.” NASB. Yes this is from the Old Testament but it is still applicable to our daily living. Simply stated here is the fact if you trust the Lord, He is close to you. A side benefit is He is a strong refuge for you when problems come. This allows you to be close to Him if you trust Him and have a gentle spirit within you. Can you say you are rejoicing in the Lord always? Can you say you have a gentle spirit within you? Can you say the Lord is near you? If not, you can. Simply ask Jesus into your heart asking Him to forgive you of your sin, and ask Him to be the Lord of your life. After all, Jesus Loves You!
GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator
We learned the value of a gentle spirit in all relationships with everyone regardless of how we are being treated. How can I do that? 1 Peter 3:4, “You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” The joy that is within you as a result of the presence of God will calm your spirit and allow you to be gentle towards anyone.

THE 2017 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!
The Way it Works STARTING IN MAY, Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.
NEW FOR 2017:
RIDERS CAN CHECK IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-IN’s AND INSTANT PRIZES! FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the "drawing" - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That's the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!
State and Stop Prizes Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win! 24

2017 OFFICIAL SPONSOR The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to "claim" their prizes. For statewide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn't able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. •
Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in's.
•
Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in's for the particular month while others prizes are drawn from check-in's season long.
•
ALL CHECK-IN's remain in the system for end of the season prizes!
•
Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in's per month (not counting bonuses).
-
For 2017, Thunder Run Riders have the chance to win 6 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts and some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other prizes! BONUS Check-in's! The 2017 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.
It's really that simple!
1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you’re eligible to win GREAT PRIZES! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
Just Get Out and RIDE!
One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your 26

Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure as thousands of riders participate in the run – all across the state. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific organization, or event can become a Thunder Run Sponsor, events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or email BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com animal shelters), or other specific areas. Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.

PRORIDER - Police Motorcycle Training for Civilians
M
otorcycling is life. We all know that, and it’s what often sets us apart from the citizens that never experience the sense of freedom found flying down the open road. And what makes the ride even better is being good at it. I mean really, really good. The basic rider courses are great and we highly recommend them for new riders. Once you’ve got a year or so under your belt and you are beginning to get an understanding of counter steering and decreasing radius curves it’s time to step up your game. Enter ProRider – the elite training group designed for experienced riders and now available in Cleveland. Our friends at Thunder Roads Pennsylvania spent a day with the crew from ProRider Pittsburgh where the program has run for several years. On that day, the ProRider instructors were teaching 12 experienced riders how to really get the most out of their motorcycles and themselves. Riders were male and female, young to semi-retired. All were transformed during the training and unequivocally endorsed the experience. The lead instructor and owner of ProRider, BJ McMullan, sat down with the TRPA crew afterwards and shared a little on the course. ProRider is police motorcycle skills training for civilian riders. This style of training is very unique and was only available to law enforcement motor cops until now. ProRider is an advanced motorcycle skills and safety training class designed for experienced riders. This class is not an MSF or Riders Edge type of training; it is the next level and the most advanced course you can take in the area. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation does a great job of providing training to beginners and refresher training to experienced riders. However, there was no training available that was comparable to the advanced skills taught in police courses. There is nothing secretive about these skills, nothing that will compromise officer safety if

learned by the public. These skills simply aren’t incorporated into any civilian classes. Have you ever seen a police motorcycle rodeo or police motorcycle training video? This is ultimate control of your motorcycle; we will teach you the techniques needed to advance your skills at ProRider. ProRider training will help any rider regardless of how long you have been riding. Low speed skills and extremely tight turns in confined spaces are the hardest skills to learn on a motorcycle. We teach techniques that do not come naturally, no matter how long you have been riding. These techniques, when applied and practiced will allow you to gain ultimate control of your ride. It is the opposite of your instincts; it must be learned through training.

At ProRider, you will learn several different police style courses during your 8 hour training class. In the morning, we start by breaking your bad habits and teaching you the new techniques that are needed to progress throughout the days training. You will learn and practice simple police courses in the morning and progress to more challenging courses throughout the day. Emergency stopping? We got you covered on this too! We will teach you the most effective emergency braking skills to shorten your stopping distance and help you avoid that accident. Our courses include Braking, Brake and Evade, 30 mph cone weave, Single 360, Double 360, Iron Cross, Offset cone weave, 90 degree pull out, Crash avoidance and many others.

This class is fun, humbling, challenging and very rewarding. There is nothing like it in the area. You will leave the training site a completely different rider than when you pulled in. You will become the envy of your friends that you ride with. As you pull into bike night, people will notice you’re riding skills before your bike! No more riding with your feet out like stabilizers during low speed. No more walking your bike in crowded areas. You will learn to control your motorcycle like you never thought possible. Learn to do an extremely tight U-Turn without putting your feet down and walking it. Save the walking for your dog, enroll in a ProRider class today! Our classes have included both male and female riders from 25 to 70 years old. We offer a group and Veteran discounts, private classes and female only classes. Gift cards are also available. We are an accredited school, check with your insurance company to see if they offer discounts. ProRider aims to provide a challenging, fun and safe learning environment that will allow participants to enhance their riding experience by developing rock solid confidence on the road and gaining ultimate control of their ride. ProRider is rapidly growing; there are 18 schools across the country, one in Brazil, and now one in Cleveland! All ProRider Cleveland instructors are certified police motor instructors and motorcycle rodeo competitors with many years of training and riding experience. BROTHERS AND THEIR INDIAN THE ABERNATHY BROTHERS
BY: T.R.
You may have never heard of them or their story, but the Abernathy brothers will surely go down in history with owners of Indian motorcycles as a favorite. They started adventure touring at a very young age. Bud and his brother Temple at the ages of 10 and 14 bought their Indian Motorcycle with money they earned from horseback riding across the USA.
T
heir father, a US Marshall and good friend of president Roosevelt, decided he wanted his boys to be tough as nails and plotted their first adventure for them on horseback when they were only ages 5 and 9. He sent them on a ride from Oklahoma to New Mexico on July 10, 1909, eight years after Indian Motorcycle was founded. One year later, leaving from Oklahoma again, they headed for New York where they met Roosevelt as he returned from a hunting trip. It was then that the boys started receiving a lot of attention from the media and the rest of the country. They arrived in New York on June 11th 1910 and were greeted by a cheering crowd of thousands of people, along with their father. Their trip home (alone), was in a Brush Motor car that they had purchased in New York City. In 1911, the boys accepted a challenge with other riders, to ride horses from New York City to San Francisco in under 60 days. They were not allowed to sleep or eat indoors and the winner of the challenge would get $10,000. They arrived in San Francisco two days late, but they earned enough cash for their unique journey and story, so they bought their first motorcycle, an Indian as you see pictured here. Their last documented adventure was in 1913 where they rode from Oklahoma to New York .Bud grew up and graduated from law school, and his brother Temple flourished in the oil field. I don’t know about what your kids are doing right now, but I can bet he or she is probably playing X box and texting on his cell….Wow, has time changed.

FROM ACROSS THE POND “The History of Vincent Motorcycles”
by Andy Tallone they began producing their own engines. Vincents were always well-designed, well-built and unique. At a time when most bikes used rigid frames, the Vincent used a setup similar in many ways to Harley’s Softail, called the Cantilever Frame. The entire rear section of the bike pivoted on a swing arm with the shocks mounted horizontally under the seat. It looked like a conventional rigid frame at first glance, but offered some much-needed suspension travel. Another unique feature were the two valve guides on each valve, one high and one low with a forked rocker arm in between. It was meant to prolong valve guide life, and it worked. 1970 Egli-Vincent cafe racer. LARGER THAN LIFE Vincent Motorcycles have an aura and a cache to them that vastly outweighs their production numbers. From the end of World War II until Vincent closed its doors in 1955, they produced fewer than 11,000 units total. And yet, their image and reputation among the British motorcycle faithful is larger than life. At classic motorcycle shows they draw crowds. At auction, they often bring six-figure money. In a way, Vincents have taken on a status much like old Ferraris, which were also produced in very low numbers, yet command respect, admiration and high auction prices. Vincent’s premier bike, the Black Shadow, was certainly a beautiful piece of machinery with its gloss black engine, but they were also extremely fast in their day, having earned the title “The World’s Fastest Motorcycle”. VINCENT’S EARLY DAYS The Vincent story begins in World War I, when young British RAF pilot Howard Raymond Davis is shot down and captured by the Germans in 1917. While a POW, he conceived a motorcycle design that he planned to produce after the war. The resulting company, HRD (Davis’ initials) built motorcycles using JAP engines until 1928, when they went broke. Along comes Phil Vincent, flush with cash from the Argentine cattle business. He bought HRD out of receivership for a mere 450 pounds. He renamed the company Vincent-HRD. They started out building motorcycles with engines purchased elsewhere. In 1934, 40

Note the ‘Cantilever’ rear suspension on this ‘53 Black Shadow. WARTIME BLUES World War II saw Vincent making munitions and marine engines, but not motorcycles. At war’s end, Phil Vincent set about opening up the US market. But Harley-Davidson, H-D for short, objected to Vincent using the HRD name in America, claiming it would create confusion in the marketplace. So the HRD-part was dropped, and from then on, they were simply called “Vincents”. But their biggest sellers at the time were 500cc singles, the Meteor and the Comet, good for around 26 horsepower and 90 mph top speed. Vincent knew they needed much more power if they wanted to compete in the burgeoning US motorcycle market. How could the low-volume, cash-strapped Vincent come up with a new motorcycle with twice the power? That’s an interesting story.

THE BATHING SUIT BIKE
Presto! From a single to a V-twin. FUNNY STORY... Prior to the War, Phil Irving, Vincent’s chief engineer, was sitting at the drawing board with two tracings of the Vincent 499cc single-cylinder engine. As things got moved around, the top tracing roughly lined up with the bottom one at an angle that made it look like a V-twin. With a little cajoling, he lined it all up and the Vincent V-twin was born. The new 998cc 1936 Series A Rapide made 45 horsepower and was good for 110 mph, stellar at the time. It was produced in low numbers until civilian production was curtailed by World War II in 1939. After the War, it was completely redesigned and the 1946 Series B Rapide was a monster. They put two front brakes on it to counter the added speed. The Series C came out in 1948, with telescopic forks instead of the old girders. But the big news was the addition of a new high-performance version dubbed the Black Shadow, now making 55 hp and topping out at 125 mph, hence the title “The World’s Fastest Production Motorcycle”. Black Shadows are famous for their gloss black engines. Rapide engines were finished in polished alloy.
They weren’t kidding about the “World’s Fastest Motorcycle”-thing. On September 13, 1948, Rolland “Rollie” Free piloted his modified Black Shadow into the history books at the Bonneville Salt Flats. At the time, the 150 mph-barrier seemed unreachable for motorcycles. Rollie tried several times, but never quite touched “The Big 150”. He determined that it was the wind resistance of his clothing that was slowing him down. So he stripped down to a bathing suit, a bathing cap and a pair of borrowed sneakers, he removed the seat and laid prone on the back fender. His 2-way average jumped to 150.313 mph. The picture of him breaking the record is one of the most iconic photos in all of motorcycledom. The record-breaking Black Shadow forever became known as “The Bathing Suit Bike”.
This is the actual Bathing Suit Bike today. CRAZY IDEAS THAT FAILED ANYWAY Despite their success on the Salt, Vincent struggled financially. Phil Vincent tried many different, and sometimes crazy things to turn it around. Motorcycles with full-enclosed bodies were an expensive experiment that failed to catch on. Then they tried a trike with a 998cc Rapide V-twin capable of 117 mph. It too bombed in the market. Next they became the importers of NSU mopeds, selling over 20,000 NSU Quickly mopeds in 1954 alone, so good in fact that NSU pulled their contract and began importing them themselves. In 1955 Phil Vincent finally pulled the plug, ending a brilliant career in motorcycle production. He vowed however that Vincent parts would always be available, and in fact they still are today. A testament to the solidity of Vincent the motorcycle, and Vincent the man.

Another bad idea: the fully-enclosed ’55 Black Prince. LIFE AFTER DEATH The Vincent name and those gorgeous V-twin engines were just too compelling to stay dead. Several custom frame fabricators have built modern motorcycles around the Vincent Black Shadow 998cc V-twin. Fritz Egli was one of the first in 1965. Genuine Egli-Vincents command high prices today, and they are also copied by other builders. Chopper builder Falcon Engineering in SoCal has also built some stunning bikes with Vincent Black Shadow power.

Piston Power Show in Review IMBBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TRO and the IMBBA crown another Champion at the Piston Power Show!
T
hunder Roads Ohio had the honor of once again helping to host the 2017 International Master Bike Builder Association (IMBBA) National Championship as part of the Piston Power Show, held in Cleveland Ohio. Sponsored by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys (www.russbrown.com) and Vivid Jewelers (www.vividjewelers.com) – this event drew world class bikes from at least 16 states and Canada. All of which were competing for the chance to win $5,000 cash, a custom gold and diamond Championship Ring – and bragging rights for the next year.
This was the third year that TRO, the IMBBA, and I-X Center have worked together to build a world class bike show - and the 2nd time hosting the IMBBA Championship, previously held in Florida. Both competitors and attendees of the show alike recognized that this was a dramatic step up from past Auto-Rama Shows. Executive Vice-President of the I-X Center, Bill Perrien, affirmed this looking back on the weekend, “The 2017 Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama was a huge success and the motorcycles that were at the show were at a whole different level from 2016.” The competition was indeed intense as builders from across the country came to compete in a variety of classes, as well as
46
Pro Builder categories. Each motorcycle was judged by 3 separate IMBBA Certified Judges using their system of evaluating the Form, Fit, and Function of virtually every component of the bike. This year’s judging crew included Jeff Starke, President and Founder of the IMBBA as the Head Judge, supported by Roy Mathes of Ohio and Francesco Mottoli from Milan, Italy. Each Judges scored each of the over 100 entries, and then their scores were entered into the computer and compiled. If any of the judge’s score deviated by more than a few points from the other – the bike and that aspect was re-evaluated by the entire crew to ensure that something was not missed by the others. It’s an exhaustive process that had the judges on-site late into the evening and then back well before the doors opened in the morning. When the scoring was done, Wayne Burgess from the Niagara Falls area was the winner. His custom shovelhead “Digger” style chopper earned the top score from all the judges. While most of the attention at the show seemed to be on the numerous professional builders at the show, the Digger nicknamed “Spitball Magoo” slipped past everyone and scored an almost unprecedented perfect score – with only a single point being taken off!

“2017 Duck Award Winner - Best bike shown for the first time.”
One of the more unique aspects of the Piston Power Show is the Duck Award. This award is named after one of the legends of the show and seeks to recognize the BEST BIKE being shown at the Piston Power Show for the first time ever, having never been displayed or entered for competition at any other show. The last two years, DZ Customs of Boardman has taken the Duck Award home. This year several builders came to the show with freshly built bikes intentionally never shown before, in order to compete for the Duck Award. Evil Iron Customs, of Canal Winchester OH, came to the show with two such “Ducks” – having skipped Daytona Bike Week to focus entirely on this show. Both bikes were jaw dropping works of art, unveiled for the first time in Cleveland – one a 2017 Road Glide and the other a 2015 Road King – reborn as the FLG Bagger! It was this purple beast that would steal the Duck down to the Columbus area. Commissioned by Russell Flickinger, of the Flickinger Law Group, this monster features a 121” powerplant built by Trask Performance with 100 mm pistons, steel welded crank, re-worked heads, and an Assault Trask Turbocharger. Finished with Cerakote® ceramic finish by Eric Carr Paint and detailed graphics by Evil Iron’s own Rodney Chester – the bike carries a bold look that demanded attention from THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
everyone that came by. It wasn’t the engine and cool graphics, though, that won Evil Iron the Duck Award. Having competed in a number of IMBBA Shows, the Evil Iron crew knew that it would all come down to the craftsmanship and attention to detail that the Judges demanded. Form, Fit, Finish, and Safety – the mantra of the IMBBA were the critical considerations and what won them the award. TRO and the Piston Power Show have committed themselves to the judging standards of the IMBBA as a means of ensuring that truly the best of the show are recognized and all participants are assured of an objective, critical scoring of their motorcycles. The show also recognized the “entertainment” value of show motorcycles in “People’s Choice Award” – sponsored and awarded by Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine. This year’s winner was none other than Joe Ballard, who also won last year’s award. It was a matching pair of displays for this year’s show from Joe – with this year’s winner set up adjacent to last years. Both are service tribute bikes – with this year’s bike dedicated to those lost during the Vietnam War. It was an emotional display that drew the support of virtually everyone that came by. Piston Power Show in Review All in all – it was a great weekend. The Piston Power Show is undoubtedly the largest show of its type in the nation and offers something for anyone that has ever enjoyed the roar of an engine. For motorcyclists, it is a chance to admire some incredible machines and catch up with friends you may not have seen since you put away your bike for the winter. Thunder Roads Ohio would like to thank Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys and Vivid Jewelers for helping to sponsor the Thunder Zone Motorcycle Area of the show and the IMBBA Judging. TRO would also like to thank Steve Legerski, the Show Manager, and Bill Perrien, the Executive Vice-President of the I-X Center for the hundreds – if not thousands of hours that they have spent working over the last year to ensure that the Piston Power Show is the best of the best. They have been a great partner for TRO and working together – it was undoubtedly a show that we were proud of. And now it’s time to start looking towards next year’s show. Steve Legerski, The Piston Power Show Manager, let us know that “The 2018 show will take place March 16 – 18, 2018 at the I-X Center. The 2018 theme will be, “When Cleveland Rocks, Auto-Rama Rolls.” The 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies are in Cleveland and we are going to dove-tail up to them as our show opens in March. Those ceremonies at the Rock Hall happen in April, so start thinking about your bike and its display as we will start taking applications for the show on July 10, 2017.” Sounds like fun – See ya there!

The International Master Bike Builders Association The IMBBA was founded in 2005 by Jeff Starke, custom bike builder and former chief technical advisor and lead judge for the World Famous Rat’s Hole Chopper Show until the show’s owner, “Big Daddy Rat” Karl Smith died during Daytona Bike Week 2002. The IMBBA has established an objective system to evaluate and recognize the craftsmanship and skills, knowledge and talent employed in quality bike restoration, rebuilding, and radical from-the-ground-up customization of bikes worldwide. This system has helped to develop professional standards within the industry itself, well beyond them bike shows that utilize it. The IMBBA currently has certified members in 10 countries and a growing number of IMBBA judges capable of judging bike shows around the world, using the standardized point system. Member-representatives have been helping to spread the IMBBA story since 2005, and continue to help other tradesmen become certified. The IMBBA point system is aimed at globally strengthening the industry by rewarding performance and accomplishment, and ultimately by rewarding charitable giving within the industry. Enjoy Your Time in the Sun WOW. I just returned from a Week in Dayton for 2017 Daytona Bike Week. Let me say it again, WOW. Let me tell you that I am exhausted! Sleeping in the front seat of your truck at a campground for a week is an experience let me tell you. Before you say it “TRUCK”?! Unfortunately, Yes, I had to work remotely all week so I needed to haul the bike in the truck so I had somewhere to work out of and sleep in. But here was plenty of riding involved as well. I thought I was prepared for 10 days, but it turns out it gets damn cold in March in Daytona. I don’t know what I was thinking bringing only tank tops, T-shirts and one hooded sweatshirt! When I woke up one night to turn the heater on in the truck the temp read 31 degrees. I don’t care where you are, 31 degrees is COLD! Fortunately, there are department stores everywhere in this country, so a quick trip for thermals was indeed necessary! If you have never made the trip, as I had not previously, there is truly something for everyone. I stayed at the Cackleberry Campground across the street from The Cabbage Patch. I figured this was my best bet for hanging out late nights, and not riding if I wanted to enjoy some cocktails. I was right. You can literally wander around the event area of the campground, or mosey across the street to the huge venue at the Bar. The Patch had four separate band stages. When one band would end a set, the next one on the other stage would start right up. Very well laid out! Plus, the campground had a full list of events, from the Club Flirt Girls doing their thing, to Go Carts, Burn Out pit, Slime wrestling, Bands, etc. Of course, the Cabbage Patch is known for its “Coleslaw Wrestling” too. I also ate more “Fair Food” than I care to admit!! Beyond the Cabbage Patch, there were some decent days for riding too. Down on A1A, Main Street is the epicenter of the Daytona event. I am not a big crowd person, but you can park and literally walk for blocks and blocks along A1A and see so many different Bars, Restaurants, or take a stroll down the beach. We hit a few places such as the World-Famous Boot Hill Saloon, Froggy’s
62
and many more. Again, Band after Band, Bar after bar. It’s really an amazing event for night life. A short ride away was the Notorious “Last Resort Bar” on US 1. Home of “Ice Cold Beer and Killer Women”. (Watch the movie “Monster” or Research “Aileen Wuornos” if you don’t already know about it) If you stop by during the afternoon you will most likely be able to throw back a couple of cold ones with Al the owner for decades and listen to some of his stories of days gone by. Mesmerizing conversations for sure! The Harley Dealerships would not be left out either. They put on some great events during Bike Week too. Destination Daytona Dealership is literally a city in and of itself. Band, shops, food, vendors, tattoo shops, you name it. People get the impression that vendors are charging a fortune for their wares, but honestly, I found exactly the opposite. I broke down and bought a new leather jacket because I was freezing, and I paid less than I paid for the original one I bought 10 years ago, (and forgot at home). It is the exact same brand, exact same style. I was pretty amazed at the deals that could be had. In the end, it’s the people that make an event. Yes, I saw a few folks, men and women who had had more than their fill of libations. Those were the exception not the rule. I’m sure there were plenty of issues here or there, but I saw exactly Zero fights, arguments, disagreements or whatever. I was really amazed at the friendly nature of almost everyone I ran into or observed. In fact, moreover I witnessed people helping other folks with bike issues, or offering a seat around their warm fire ring, a cold beer, or friendly conversation. There was a fellow loading his bike in his truck on the last morning preparing to head out, that the ramp snapped with the bike half in and half out of his truck. My buddy and I were standing near him and helped to grab and steady the bike, but in an instant, there were 5 other guys jumping right in to help. Offering the use of their ramps, and
helping the guy get loaded. Without even an ask. That’s what Biker Folks are about. You know that. Good people. I know that Spring has yet to have fully arrive in the north. The exciting thing for you all is that your event season 2017 is just getting ready to kick off! Ohio Bike Week will be here before you know it! There is plenty of Sunshine and warmer temps headed your way very soon. I know plenty of people who have even been fortunate enough to ride several times over this mild past winter. I am lucky that I get to ride literally every week all year long. I love that riding season doesn’t end down in the sunny south. I hope you make the most of this summer’s riding season, get out and support these events and the folks who make their living providing for a great time for all of us. Enjoy Your Time in the Sun! Keep it REAL! My Road Name is “Tabasco”, and I approve this message!

Decisions on the Dedicated Sidearm – Pt. 2 Photos and Article by: Brody Kennen
Since 2013-’14, we have seen a boom on the purchase of single-stack handguns for use in concealed carry. I have walked into many FFLs and witnessed the salesperson or a thirdparty trying to push a Ruger LCP/ 9 or similarly sized handgun off to the customer. I have also met many on shooting ranges and watched what they brought to shoot. Over the last year alone, most of those people stopped regularly shooting those smaller single-stack handguns. In fact, the only single-stack that I’ve seen people retain is the 9x19mm Glock-43, so far. In most of the cases, where one quit utilizing the compact handgun they bought for carry, those handguns were bought based on a “feel good” level and I will explain why. Women are targeted for certain kinds of handguns when it comes to sales. A compact carry handgun had been, almost exclusively, a revolver of some sort, up until 2012 roughly. As it is still the case today; the research, prepurchase training / shooting had not been done. The complaints were of either the revolver being single-action or the football field length of the first-round, double-action pull – if the hammer wasn’t pulled back first. Today, with the compact and single-stack semiautomatics, the complaints are of “too little gun”. Again, no pre-purchase trips were made to a viable rental range. Mrs. Smith learned that there wasn’t enough grip length or width, nor was there enough weight, to keep even a .380 ACP from being painfully snappy in the hand and wrist while firing.
personally, preferred the “compact” Glock-19 over the double-stack, “sub-compact” G26 and the single-stack, “slimline” G43 variants. For them, as is the case for myself, the Glock-19 gave them the perfect balance of grip height, width and overall weight to keep the 9mm’s recoil tame despite having different hand sizes. They are just as capable of concealing the mid-sized handgun on their person with a proper holster and attire. And, in fact, they shoot the mid-sized handguns better than the sub-compact lines – brands being irrelevant. The most persistent issue with women carrying the “service”-sized handguns, in my humble opinion, is purse carry. I will explain it as simply as this, ladies. Your purse is already targeted by thieves. Don’t arm them, as well. The plateau of the boom was when some purchased stop-gap handguns, specifically the .380 ACP Glock-42, while waiting for the release of the single-stack 9mm Glock that ended up being the G43. I witnessed a lot of people buy themselves into a hole instead of waiting for the inevitable release of said 9mm, which is what they really wanted. And, now? A lot of people have the little .380 with no way to sell them, because everyone else either has or wants the G43. Now, those G42s sit, collecting dust and all with no more than one-hundred rounds through them on average. I understand purchasing a Taurus TCP or Smith & Wesson Shield if your reasoning for a stop-gap is that it’s better to have one than not, but that’s not what the purchase of most of those G42s was about. I will admit, there are options for Glock-42 grip extensions such as the Strike Industries +2-round extensions and they make a similar option for the 9mm Glock-43.
problem. The short grip-length leaves the magazine base plate to sit shallow in the center of the palm. The problem with the recoil isn’t solely fixed by a pinky extension. You also need to support a proper “Combat Grip” with the palm. The best way to do this, using the Glock-26 as an example, would be buying an X-Grip magazine sleeve for alternate G17 or G19 magazines. The downside being that you must buy the standard or compact sized magazines for the platform. Furthermore, with the grip length that long, I would just go ahead and buy the G19 for the longer sight radius. Or, one could chop the grip on their G17 frame while retaining the barrel length… And, it is seemingly popular to do. I do recommend professional work done on that note. The moral of all of this is compact (midsize) handguns will likely do you better than a subcompact or most single-stacks for concealed carry. Other aspects come into play, as well. Purchasing top-of-the-line inside-the-waistband holsters and belts will broaden your carry options and your daily wear will also come into play. I am a fellow of 5’09” stature and only weigh 125-pounds or so, but I can carry a full-size Glock with nothing more than a t-shirt during the summer. I, personally, need to move on to a new belt, but the G-Code INCOG IWB holster has worked wonders. A young lady, whom I know, learned she could run the exact same setup, with a mid-size Glock, while wearing a dress. But, you must invest in the proper equipment to get the job done. “I could not find a sweet spot on my 2014 Harley Ultra for a comfortable ride on the back as we have air shocks. My wife and I met George (the owner) at an event in Ohio, he needed our riding weight with luggage. He put on a pair of Pro-Action Street Shocks and told me to take it for a ride— with no mention of money! How many people do that today? On the first trip we were close, but not what I was looking for. He made a quick adjustment and sent me back out. What a difference after a two-second adjustment! Now he said, you and your wife both go for a ride. She couldn’t believe the difference. No more slamming on her spine as we rode the same roads as before. George asked, “So, what do you think?” We both said, “Just amazing,” and he then asked if we would like a pair and we said, “yes.” So I asked, “What would you have done if I had said no?” His quote was, “Put your air shocks back on.” What a great experience it was to talk and deal with you.” Keith and Emily B. Ashtabula, OH

RECIPES
Pepperoni Stuffed Chicken w/Roasted Garlic Serve 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)
Ooey Gooey Cheater Mac N Cheese Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 4 cups chicken stock
1 box Velveeta mac n cheese 1 cup cheddar, shred ½ cup mozzarella ½ bacon bits
3 large chicken breast halves 3 cups spaghetti sauce 36 slices of pepperoni (a few extra for topping) ½ pizza toppings (small diced onions, green peppers, mushrooms, black olives, etc.) Optional-not included in carb count ½ cup parmesan cheese, shredded 1 ½ cup mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 tbsp dry Italian seasoning 10-12 cloves raw garlic, cleaned
(optional stir ins – diced tomatoes, fried onions, sausage, pepperoni, ham, etc)
• • •
•
Preheat oven to 350
•
•
In a medium sauce pot bring the chicken stock to a boil and add in the boxed pasta
•
•
Once pasta is ALMOST done drain off HALF the chicken stock – NOT all of it – yes it will seam soupy, trust me here!
•
•
Stir in the pkg of Velveeta then add in the cheddar and mozzarella (and any other stir ins you want), mix well.
•
Pour mixture into a baking dish coated with cooking spray then top with the bacon bit.
•
Bake for 30 minutes uncovered – WARNING: this is highly addictive!
• • • • •
Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! -The Iron Cowboy
•
Preheat the oven to 350. In an oven safe dish, place ¼ cup spaghetti sauce. Take each chicken breast and pound out until it is about 1/2 inch to 1/3 inch thick. Sprinkle flattened chicken with 1/3 the Italian seasoning, then spread 1-2 tbsp of spaghetti sauce over it. Lay 12 slices of pepperoni over one end of the chicken, covering about half the area. Sprinkle with 1 tbsp parmesan then 2 tbsp mozzarella down the length of the chicken. Layer on any additional veggies you want to add. Then starting at the end with the pepperoni, roll the chicken towards the other end, tucking in anything that falls out. Place the roll into the prepared dish and complete the other two. Pour the remaining sauce over the top of all 3 rolls, then add any extra pepperoni slices. Sprinkle on the remaining parmesan and mozzarella cheese and toss the garlic cloves around the edges of the rolls. Bake for 1 hour, serve over noodles or as is with bread! YUMMO!
This is a simple version of a pizza stuffed chicken, but I kept it low carb by only using pepperoni, cheese, and home made sauce - It rocked for only 4g of carbs!

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
According to a new survey, women say they feel more comfortable undressing in front of men than they do undressing in front of other women. They say that women are too judgmental, where, of course, men are just grateful. A blonde suspects her boyfriend of cheating on her, so she goes out and buys a gun. She goes to his apartment unexpectedly and when she opens the door she finds him in the arms of a redhead. Well, the blonde is really angry. She opens her purse to take out the gun, and as she does so, she is overcome with grief. She takes the gun and puts it to her head. The boyfriend yells, “No, honey, don’t do it.” The blonde replies, “Shut up, you’re next!” A Kindergarten teacher was walking around the classroom observing the students while they were drawing. Stopping at the desk of one little girl who was working hard on her drawing, the teacher asked what the girl was drawing. The girl replied, “I’m drawing God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.” Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, “They will in a minute.”
A young man has always dreamed of owning a Harley Davidson. One day he has finally saved up enough money so he goes down to the dealer. After picking out the perfect bike, the dealer asks if he would like some extra chrome protection added to the bill. The young man is upset because he does not have the extra money, and is now afraid that the chrome will rust as soon as it gets wet. The dealer tells him not to worry. There is an old biker trick that will keep the chrome like new. All he has to do is to keep a jar of Vaseline handy and put it on the chrome before it rains - and everything will be fine. The young man happily pays for the bike and leaves. A few months later, the young man meets a woman and falls in love. She asks him to come home and meet her parents over dinner. He readily agrees and the date is set. At the appointment time, he picks her up on his new Harley and they ride to her parents house. Before they go in, she tells him that they have a family tradition that whoever speaks first after dinner must do the dishes. After a delicious dinner everyone sits in silence waiting for the first person to break and get stuck doing the dishes. After a long fifteen minutes, the young man decides to speed things up, so he reaches over and kisses the woman in front of her family. And no one says a word....... Next he decides to take a more direct approach, so he throws her on the table and makes love to her in front of everyone. And no one says a word..... Now he is getting desperate, so he grabs her mother and throws her on the table. They have even wilder relations. Yet no one says a word..... By now he is getting very worried and is thinking what to do next when he hears thunder in the distance. His first thought is to protect the chrome on his new Harley, so he reaches in his pocket and pulls out his jar of Vaseline. And the father says “Never mind! I’ll do the dishes!”
A photographer for a national magazine was assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he frantically called his home office to hire a plane. “It will be waiting for you at the airport!” he was assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, rural airport, sure enough, a plane was warming up near the runway. He jumped in with his equipment and yelled, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” The pilot swung the plane into the wind and soon they were in the air. “Fly over the north side of the fire,” said the photographer, “and make three or four low level passes.” “Why?” asked the pilot. “Because I’m going to take pictures! I’m a photographer, and photographers take pictures!” said the photographer with great exasperation. After a long pause the pilot said, “You mean you’re not the instructor?” A man walked into the ladies department of a Macy’s, and walked up to the woman behind the counter and said, “I’d like to buy a bra for my wife” What type of bra?” asked the clerk. “Type?” inquires the man. “There is more than one type?” “Look around,” said the saleslady, as she showed a sea of bras in every shape, size, color and material. “Actually, even with all of this variety, there are really only three types of bras,” replied the salesclerk. Confused, the man asked what the types were. The saleslady replied “The Catholic type, the, Salvation Army type, and the Baptist type. Which one do you need?” Still confused the man asked, “What is the difference between them?” The lady responded, “It is all really quite simple. The Catholic type supports the masses, the Salvation Army type lifts up the fallen, and the Baptist type makes mountains out of mole hills.”
