FROM THE PUBLISHER August often feels like the tail end of the summer riding season for many as the kids head back to school, but in many cases – it’s when we enjoy some of our best riding days. Warm days and comfortable evenings, and hopefully clear skies! As summertime winds down though, we are often left wondering where did all the time go? Many lament, “I meant to ride a lot more or hit that one stop that I haven’t made it out to yet.” Well, here’s your reminder – get out and ride! Hit those spots that you’ve been meaning to! Don’t have your “Ride Stop Bucket List” yet? Go ahead and browse through the next 114 pages, and I’m guessing you’ll find more than a few that catch your eye. While you’re making your riding plans, make sure you consider some of the charitable rides and events that we’ve featured in this month’s magazine. We have a number of really great events – supporting really great causes! Often times we get lost in our own challenges and forget about the struggles of others. As riders, we have the opportunity to help folks in need by simply riding our bikes and taking part in these events. How cool is that?! Along those lines, I would like to ask a question that I posed online a few weeks ago – “In the story of your life – what role do you play?” Are you the hero, the victim, or the villain? Or are you simply one of the “extras” that’s in the background? How do you see yourself; and more importantly – how do others view you? Of course, it’s not that the opinion of others is more important. It’s that we can often lose perspective and simply consider our own view too often. We can tell ourselves that we are great folks, but are we really in the eyes of others? What have we done to be one of the good guys? And if you’re not one of the good guys – do you really want to be the villain? Maybe that sounds like more fun, but what usually happens to those folks at the end of the movie? As you decide what you’re doing this weekend, maybe consider who you’d like to be “in the movie of your life.” Do you want to be the nameless guy in the background, or possibly the action hero? If you’re thinking action hero – you might want to mix in some “action”! Like possibly getting out and trying one of those open track days or simply heading down to ride the Triple Nickel. Or maybe aim for a particular audience – and take your kid(s) or a friend out for a ride or to the races. And become a hero in their eyes! Safe travels to you all, and I hope to see you out on the road!

INDIAN ROLLS OUT A FACTORY BOBBER
Take Advantage of Early Registration Benefits for Championship of the Americas Yes, registration is open for the Championship of the Americas, North America’s most prestigious bike competition taking place at AIMExpo presented by Nationwide this September in Columbus, Ohio. There are a few benefits to early registration besides helping me plan. First, you can reserve rooms on our website for a substantial savings with this link, https://compass.onpeak.com/e/012600647. Second, we would like to publish early builder registrations to help expand your network. Third, because AIMExpo’s Championship is the only official affiliate of the AMD World Championship
Indian Motorcycle has introduced a new Scout Bobber with blacked-out styling as part of their 2018 line-up. Chopped fenders and minimalistic styling pay homage to the retro trend that has gone from the garage out back to mainline factory production. The Indian Motorcycle’s industrial design team has taken the Scout model even further forward, developing a production Bobber that can be bought direct from an Indian dealer. The 3rd and newest member of the Scout family pays homage to the mean, stripped-down builds of America’s post-war past. The Scout Bobber is a minimalist approach to aggressive street style. The emphasis is on the dark side, including blacked-out wheels and exhaust pipes but the Scout Bobber will come in five colors. The NEW Scout Bobber will be available at US dealerships in September with an MSRP of $11,499. Main features include: • Drop down bar-end mirrors • Slotted exhaust. • Rear LED lights have integrated stop, turn and tail signals for visual simplification. • New Bobber leather seat adding to the aggressive look. • Stripped-down and blacked-out, the Scout Bobber is a minimalist approach to aggressive street style. • Cartridge fork front suspension for a smooth, controlled ride that connects the rider with the road. • A 100 horsepower liquid-cooled V-Twin makes the Scout Bobber quick off the line. For more information on the New Indian Scout Bobber, we’d recommend one of these Authorized Dealers: Indian of Columbus / Pony Powersports 5370 Westerville Rd. The AIMExpo Celebrates 5 years, while A.D. Farrow Celebrates 105. It’s hard to imagine, but AIMExpo presented by Nationwide turns five in 2017! This notable milestone nicely complements the show’s move to Columbus which positions “The Powersports Expo” right in the heart of the densest population of dealers and consumers – 41% and 50%, respectively, reside within 500 miles of Columbus. With that ease of accessibility, enthusiasts of both the business and sport are expected to come out in the biggest numbers yet to see the latest the industry has to offer. While the show’s fifth year is big news, it pales in comparison to the 105th anniversary of A.D. Farrow Co. Harley-Davidson. This hometown dealership and MIC Dealer Member, with multiple locations throughout the downtown and greater Columbus region, is a valued partner of AIMExpo presented by Nationwide and holds the prestigious distinction of being the oldest continuously-operated Harley-Davidson dealer in the country!
AIMExpo Updates This year’s AIMExpo promises to be the biggest and most dynamic yet, with over 100 new companies exhibiting in Columbus – including Harley-Davidson for the first time ever. And Harley isn’t just setting up a booth, they are rolling out their entire 2018 model line-up for the first time in public – at the AIMExpo! They will also be offering demo rides as part of the AIMExpo Outdoors. The AIMExpo is also about more than just motorcycles, as more than 50 Sideby-Side and ATV Exhibitors will take part in the show – making it the strongest showing ever for four-wheeled vehicles. And once again, the manufacturers aren’t limiting themselves to the indoor exhibit hall when it comes to the four wheelers. AIMExpo Outdoors! is the most expansive and exciting powersports outdoor demo and festival area you’ll ever experience, and it’s FREE and open to everyone who attends the show – dealers, media, the general public and even exhibitor staff! Only at AIMExpo Outdoors! can you test ride new 2018 models from the major powersports manufacturers including: BMW Doohan iTank Harley-Davidson Honda Indian Kawasaki Kymco Suzuki Yamaha

BECOME A TRO PHOTOGRAPHER If you’ve ever taken a picture with your camera or even phone at an event and thought – “wow, that’s pretty cool.” Or felt like you wanted to share some of your photos with others – more than simply on Facebook. If you take pride in some of the pictures you’ve taken and have a love of the motorcycle community. We’d like to invite you to become a Photographer for TRO. One of the endless challenges that we face at Thunder Roads is attempting to cover all the events and share them with our readers – both in the pages of the magazine and online. Our primary means of doing so is by capturing as many images as possible which we then present as a means of capturing the essence of the event – both for those that were there and want to remember it and for those unable to attend. The challenge lies in the fact that even if we are just talking away, there are often countless events and rides going on every weekend throughout the summer. There are rallies, rides, bike nights, bike shows, and races almost every weekend – and we couldn’t possibly cover them all. We do, though, try to get out to as many as we can – and often times that involves us working with local contributors. And that’s where you can come in. As a Thunder Roads Ohio / Iron Cowboy Photographer you’ll be able to submit photos for both the magazine and our online sites of events within your area. You can take pictures of motorcycles, riders, and popular ride stops in your home town or wherever you ride to. As a Contributor, you aren’t “paid” for the photos – however, there are perks that come with the effort in terms of the events and access you’ll have. After you’ve established yourself as a TRO Contributor – we provide additional materials such as Credentials, special TRO Photographer Gear, and other bonus items. If you choose to get more involved, you might become a Staff Photographer – which allows additional privileges and benefits including expense reimbursement, travel options, and the opportunity to work sponsored shoots. You also have the option of becoming a Road Rep within your area as well, which entitles you to additional compensation as well. So, how do you start? By shooting us an email and sending us some pictures at ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com Please include some information about yourself – including where you’re from and your interests. You can also find more information, including submission guidelines at ThunderRoadsOhio.com 10

Make a Difference in Any Way Possible
Cooper Foundation Poker Run August 26th By Craig Cooper If you would have told me 21 years ago as I received my degree from Baldwin Wallace University, that I would have been involved in helping children with special needs, I do not know if I would have given a good response. Sometimes things have to punch you right in the face before you wake up, open up your eyes and ears and really understand it. As I grew up in the Collinwood area of Cleveland in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I had been exposed to an adult with special needs. Her name was Maureen and she would sit out on her porch in the summertime with her mother. I would walk down three houses and hang out as any little kid would, asking a bunch of questions and waiting to hear the call from my mom that dinner was ready. It really never occurred to me that Maureen had a disability. She was the lady that lived three doors down that needed a walker and was difficult to understand when she spoke. Playing basketball in high school and college, my coach’s son was wheelchair bound and came to practice all the time. I knew he had a disability but I knew nothing specific about his condition. I would wave to him and say hello at the beginning of practice. I can fully admit now, that I was a little afraid of any interaction, mostly because I did not know what to say, or how to communicate with him. I had my first “real experience” with young adults with special needs as a 20-something adult. I was teaching basketball skills to a Special Olympic basketball team in Middleburg Hts. I still see these “kids,” almost 13 years later. They still say hello when they see me around town. They will be a part of my life forever. Fast forward 10 years, the wake up call landed at our doorstep. In 2007, my youngest daughter, Cassidy, was diagnosed with Autism. Let’s just say my wife, Christine and I were not even close to understanding what our future held. We did what any parents would do - ask questions, search the internet, ask more questions, repeat. Insurance would not pay for therapy or if they did it was 8 sessions total for my daughter’s entire life. Needless to say I was really bitter for a long time. In 2013, our family routine was established with school and therapies. I felt like I understood how my daughter worked in many different situations but I wanted to do more, like raise money and awareness. I searched for fundraisers or organizations in the Cleveland area but did not find what I wanted. I discovered the Make It Fit Foundation, based out of Columbus, Ohio. They host car shows and poker runs. I called, emailed, and went to bike week trying to get the founder and president of Make It Fit, Mike Hoover, to let me start working with him to help other 12
families with Autism. After raising money for the Make It Fit Foundation for a few years and making many new friends, I suggested to my wife, “We CAN do this!” Eventually she agreed to my idea of starting our own foundation. On April 3, 2015, The Cooper Foundation became a 501c3 non-profit charity located in Brook Park, Ohio. Our mission is to help children with autism and children with any other special needs. That same year, we decided to obtain an autism service dog for our daughter, Cassidy. Needing help to raise money for our dog, we met with W.A.G.S for Kids, a foundation that works to provide service dogs to children with special needs. We worked together to host a poker run and raised half of the $9,000 we needed to get our dog, Mercy, who has become an important part of our family. The relationship for Cassidy and Mercy started off slow, but with Mercy’s help Cassidy has warmed up to her and has taken to petting her, running around the house and letting Mercy chase her, stealing Mercy’s bed for a comfortable place to watch her iPad, and turning Mercy on to the finer taste of Gino’s pizza rolls (which is not on Mercy’s diet). Mercy has added another dimension to our household. Whether it’s helping our oldest daughter Cayce learn responsibility by feeding or grooming the dog, or walking with the family in the annual 5K Autism walk in Columbus, to laying under the table at a local restaurant while we have a meal, she has made a difference. In the spirit of paying it forward, The Cooper Foundation would like

to help another child with special needs acquire a service dog. On August 26, 2017 we will host our first ever poker run - “A Ride to Provide”. So if you are on 2 wheels, 3 wheels, or 4 wheels, come have a great time while helping us to provide for a child who is in need of a service animal. Come enjoy a ride and help us make a difference in the life of a child and his/her family by providing a special needs child with the freedom and independence that a service animal provides. It is life-changing. Take it from a family who knows! The first ever “A Ride to Provide” is Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 9am to 5pm. The ride starts at Rod Iron Crew, 5281 Engle Rd. Brook Park, OH. Tickets are $25 and include food and drink at the lunch stop. REPORT Cool bikes from small shops Builders Row offers glimpse of custom possibilities LEXINGTON, Ohio — Builders Row in the Old Bike Barn Crossroads at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days offered folks a chance to check out the latest custom designs from some of the smaller American shops.
Quinn Wentzel, Jim Gawne take Off Road honors LEXINGTON, Ohio; Two off road riders demonstrated their mastery of three disciplines over the weekend at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Riders of Kawasaki at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Ben Davis, owner of Legion Cycle Works, traveled from Middletown, Del., to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Riders of Kawasaki. It was his first trip to the event. “This is a great event,” he said. “It’s cool to see all the vintage bikes and be around so many people who share the same passion.”
Quinn Wentzel, 23, of Canfield, Ohio, is the AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand Champion for the third time in five years. Jim Gawne, 46, of Oxford, Mich., is the AMA Off-Road Senior Vintage Grand Champion. Wentzel won the motocross and trails events, taking the top spot in two motocross classes. “This is a very special win,” Wentzel said. “The competition was tough. The motocross was really close. It was a hard fought win and a huge accomplishment.”
Legion is a custom shop that also handles basic repair and service.“We do everything from engine work to exhaust fabrication to custom fuel tanks to complete bikes,” he said. “If somebody has something in their head, we try to make it happen for them.” One booth over, Eric Bess of Flying Tiger Motorcycles was displaying a couple of bikes he built for a St. Louis-area whiskey maker. “We did some work for Rebel Yell on some other bikes,” he said. “Then they asked if we’d like to build a couple of bikes for them, We said, ‘Absoliutely!’”
He also was AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand Champion in 2013 and 2014. Gawne said he has been competing in trials at Vintage Motorcycle Days for six years. But this is just the second year he has gone for the grand championship. “It’s a rough three days,” he said. “The trials is my strength. I compete in trials locally; in Michigan; and nationally.” Gawne said he is drawn to Vintage Motorcycle Days by his love of vintage bikes, the racing and the swap meet. The AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand Championship and AMA Off-Road Senior Vintage Grand Championship are based on cumulative points from the three vintage off-road events: hare scrambles, trials and motocross.
Flying Tiger, located in Maplewood, Mo., built one bike for a local giveaway and another for a national giveaway. Bess said both contests will be text-to-enter. Flying Tiger also carries new Moto Guzzi, Royal Enfield and Zero motorcycles, as well as Genuine Scooters. “We actually started off doing vintage restoration and repair,” Bess said. “Then we expanded into the dealerships. Now we are doing custom building, as well.”
Moto Armory sponsored the off-road racing portion of the AMA Vintage Grand Championship, which included the motocross, hare scrambles and trials competitions. Moto Armory, a collection of more than 600 vintage motorcycles in East Moline, Ill., was also on location displaying some of the coolest vintage machines from its vault.
Other builders at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Riders of Kawasaki, included Analog Motorcycles, 6th City Cycles, Chi-Jer’s Vintage BikeWorks and Loaded Gun Customs.

Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club celebrates 40th Anniversary AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Riders of Kawasaki, hosts display LEXINGTON, Ohio; “During the past 15 years, vintage Japanese motorcycles have become more popular than ever”, said Glenn Rumburg, who manned the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club tent on Friday at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Riders of Kawasaki. “Our club is healthy and growing,” he said. “It’s the Baby Boomers and their toys. I think we have about 4,200 members now.” The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club has been a mainstay for years at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. Founded in 1977, the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club of North America (www.vjmc.org) is the premier worldwide club dedicated to the preservation, restoration and enjoyment of vintage Japanese motorcycles. The club defines “vintage” as bikes that are 20 years old or older. “Japanese bikes are much cheaper collectables than cars,” said Rumburg, whose 1966 Suzuki T20 among the 40 or so on display. “The modern bikes are all covered in plastic. They don’t have as much character.” The club has a display in the Old Bike Barn Crossroads and a booth at the swap meet. For a full schedule of events at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Riders of Kawasaki, visit www. vintagemotorcycledays.com. “We’re a bunch of kids reliving their youth,” Rumburg said.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.
SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, We are half way through the riding season and it’s time to look at the stats. In 2017 we have had 1400 crashes and 42 fatalities, and in 2016 we had 1834 crashes and 77 fatalities. If we stay on this track we could finish the year at let’s say 100 fatalities. That would be “Half” of last year. Wouldn’t that be great? Looking at the overall stats, motorcyclists are at fault 55.9% of the time. Yes, over half of us do it to ourselves. What can we do to help this? Remember the things that we have learned over the years of riding. Don’t take what we do for granted. Scan ahead, check your mirrors, use your turn signals, slow down and always remember to do your pre-ride check. With our reputation and all, something that we can boast about is that we have had only 114 crashes and 12 fatalities, to date, due to alcohol. That is way down from our past. It is never too late to take some time and take the Motorcycle Ohio riding class. Chuck and the crew have been working hard getting the Motorcycle Ohio More class up and running. If you don’t know, Motorcycle Ohio has created its own curriculum. It is structured to Ohio riding conditions and will teach us more about our road conditions. Go to the web site and check out the new classes and schedules at www.motorcycleohio.gov or call 1-800-83-Rider. If you have never taken a class you will learn something and if your passenger wants to become a better passenger, go and take a class. You will see a difference! As I have found in my trips this year, the weather has been playing with us. In the Spring, nice warm days ended up being not that warm and you needed that coat you didn’t bring. The nice dry and warm days ended up with some rain and some of us had no rain gear. The point is that you always need to be prepared for all conditions. If you get too cold your reaction time is slower and if the rain gets into your eyes you can’t see. Remember, in the first 15 to 30 minutes of rain, the roads are the slipperiest. Stop, take a 18 18
break and put your gear on, or just wait for the oils to be washed off the roads. And with the rain showers you get gravel washing out on the roadways. Slow down. Distracted driving, drunk driving and drugged driving are still major problems to motorcycle riders. In Toledo they are now writing tickets for cell phone use. We have not heard yet how it is going but the prosecutor is prosecuting. We will keep you informed. With drivers on the road distracted or under the influence, we need to be ready to react at any time and be alert to what may happen. If you ever see a Safe Communities event, go check it out and see what you can do to help make our roads safer. In the past I have talked about the flood walls in Portsmouth. They have murals on them of all different subjects, but the motorcycle mural is my favorite. Steubenville also has a lot of murals on walls of buildings throughout the town. I have not been there as of yet but at Gallipolis and across the river there are supposed to be some great murals. Hope to get down that way soon; will keep you posted. If anyone finds some nice murals take a picture and send it to me. This is the month that we all need to come together and support the ABATE of Ohio Foundation Raffle Bike. If you have not gotten your ticket this year and would like to support Motorcycle Awareness and Safety call me and I will send you a ticket. They are only $10.00 per ticket, buy 5 tickets and you get a free ABATE membership, and you get a chance on a 2017 UltraLimited Low, trailer, docking system, storage box and 10% off your next trip to

Signature Harley. The drawing is Saturday, August 26th at the Original Margaritaville, Sandusky Ohio. The day will be full of music, bike show, road ride, raffles of all kinds and great food. For info, call or email me. Time to end this. I would like to ask everyone to support your local motorcycle events. Too many fundraisers don’t support the motorcyclists but take advantage of our deep pockets and kindness. Fundraisers are important, but so are motorcycle organizations. Continued support is needed so nonmotorcyclists cannot vote to put helmets on our heads and take our freedoms away. KENNEDY STYLE

THE ROAD TO MOTOAMERICA - Last of a four part series I wanted to get some views from the rider himself--eighteen year old, Steven Dietz. “So now you are a Pro-Racer, no longer running in your comfort zone with family and friends you have ridden with for years.” Steven says it is somewhat sad that he isn’t riding with his brothers and dad at this level but that he is riding with the best of the best, competing against the top riders in the country. It helps him improve as a rider. Steven explains however, that you still rely on family...your race family. And that is what racers are--family. He gives a special shout out to CJ Laroche and the whole Laroche team (someone he raced with during his Club Racing days as a mentor.) Steven credits CJ with helping during his transition to the 600 over the last two years. The whole road racing family has that mindset. A competitor needs a tool, a spare part and your help. Likewise, if you are in need of something or help, just ask a fellow racer at the track--even at this level.
20 20
He also credits his time spent at the Yamaha Champions Riding School which helped him concentrate on body positioning, throttle control, brake pressure and rich (the ability to lean the bike over). He also acknowledges without the help of his dad none of this would be possible. His goals at this stage of his pro-career are to run in the top 10 in his class which is 600 Superstock. He hopes to have a healthy remainder of the season.
Dad will also need to step up his game as coach for this very special weekend. I know that my family and I will be there to support Steven and Team Dietz. Please consider coming out for the day or the weekend to watch Steven and all the riders compete at a premier track. Its just over an hour and a half ride from the Cleveland area. GOOD LUCK STEVEN.
Unfortunately time and money have prevented him from running the West Coast portion of the MotoAmerica schedule. As I have mentioned before, this is an expensive sport He looks forward to running at his home track, PittRace, the weekend of August 25-27. He knows that he will have the support of family and many friends and he hopes to bring home some hardware. His dad says Pitt will be his toughest race. There is added pressure and distraction. Steven wants to do very well in front of those family members and friends and

CMA Child Like Faith Young children are dependent on their parents to provide for their needs. As God’s children we are no different. In becoming a Christian we are dependent on God to provide for our needs. Spiritual food is what we need to grow in Christ. We find that in the Bible, in songs of praise and worship, fellowship with other Christians and prayer time or time set aside for talking with God. 1 Corinthians 10:3,4, “and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.” NASB. Spiritual clothing is what we need to fight the battle of remaining strong for Christ. Daily, spending time with God in the Bible and in prayer, we learn to put on our battle gear. Ephesians 6:13-17, “Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” NASB.
Spiritual shelter can only be found in Christ for He is our protector and shelter for all storms. Psalms 33:20, “You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.” NASB. As a child has the faith to believe their parents will provide for them, we need to have that same kind of faith that God will provide for us. Becoming a Christian is very simple; believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Believe Jesus died to allow me to be reunited with God my Father because of my sins. Believe Jesus was buried and rose from the dead. Believe Jesus ascended into Heaven and will come again to take His children home. Ask Jesus to forgive my sins and come to live in my heart. Then allow Him to change how I live. I’m all in, how about you? GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer, we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride! The Way it Works: STARTING IN MAY, Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a rider has registered at the stop - their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-ins randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.
NEW FOR 2017: RIDERS CAN CHECK-IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-INs AND INSTANT PRIZES! FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS. And it’s SIMPLE – 1. 2. 3. 4.
TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AND CHECK IN AT YOUR LOCATION. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #ThunderRoadsOH It’s that simple.
Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

State and Stop Prizes: Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the checkins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
The Winners: If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize, they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-ins. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-ins season long. • ALL CHECK-INs remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).
For 2017, Thunder Run riders have the chance to win 6 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts, some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes!
BONUS Check-ins! The 2017 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.
It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over however, you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have a special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a way for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.
We want to keep things exciting for you, our readers as riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. 26
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
For 2017, there will be even more emphasis on Event Ride Stops. Rides, Rallies, Bike Nights, and Bike Shows will all be Ride Stops where you can check in to WIN! We will be adding a lot more Bike Night stops all across the state for more mid-week rides.
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors, Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run but there are undoubtedly plenty more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else, we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. Please send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.
The RIDE kicks off MAY 10, 2017!
Some folks may sneak you in early, but please understand that we give a little time for people to get set up and everyone on the same page.
As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

NEW FOR 2017 - SOCIAL MEDIA CHECK-IN’s Here’s how it works – At designated stops all across the state (see list on the following pages) there are RIDE STOP signs posted. When you see one of those, you can take a “selfie” of yourself in front of the sign with your card in your hand. You then “check into” the location with your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts and post the picture with the hashtag #ThunderRoadsOH It’s really that simple. If the staff at the location is busy, unavailable, or the place is even closed. You can take a picture and post with your card. We use the card to identify you – so please have the number visible. If we aren’t able to read the number we may not be able to notify you if you win. Also – if we can’t see the sign or easily identify your location, it will also be difficult to validate your win. Your best bet is to “check-in” at the location with your posting, and get a picture in front of the sign. It may sound complicated, but it’s really not. You will find that this is far easier and far faster in most cases. For those of you that don’t have smart phones, facebook, Instagram, twitter – or simply the patience to deal with all this. You’re welcome to still use the clipboard, which all locations also still have. Also – just a reminder that any location where we are set-up is also a Ride Stop. So, if you see our tents or the TRO Trailers someplace – you can pose in front and check-in! It’s that easy!

The Ride for the Rhinos Returns Iron Pony launches a ride into The Wilds! Admittedly, when I first heard about “The Ride for the Rhinos” last year, I didn’t really know what to think. What Rhinos? Was that a reference to something else? But then I discovered that one of the largest free roaming, protected herds of White Rhino’s in the world is found right here in Ohio – at The Wilds! And last year’s Ride for the Rhinos was one of the real success stories in terms of new rides – with almost 500 RIDERS taking the ride from Westerville to Cumberland (outside Zanesville). Thankfully, the ride returns this year and we certainly recommend it! Iron Pony goes all out for this event and hopes to both offer a great experience and

real value to riders participating. They are only asking for a $20 donation for each rider. In return, riders receive an OpenAir Safari Pass for The Wilds® ($30 value), a special Ride for The Rhinos collector’s t-shirt ($20 value), a continental breakfast, and a chance to win a $1,000 Iron Pony® Gift Card just for registering. All of that for just $20! Passengers are just a $10 donation – and receive the same bundle – easily worth over $50! Passengers can also choose to skip the shirt and just donate $5 – and STILL they get the Wilds Safari Pass, breakfast, and are eligible for the $1,000 Iron Pony Gift Card. It’s a great deal.

2017 Thunder Roads Ohio Championship Bike Show Series Bring out your bikes and show off what you’ve done! As motorcyclists, bikers, or whatever you want to call yourselves – our bikes are often our pride and joy. In many cases, We spend hours after hours, and often dollar after dollar making them our own personal ride. With all that time and effort, why not bring them out and showcase what you’ve done? To that end, we present the Thunder Roads Ohio Bike Show Series. The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are encouraged to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals – they are all welcome to the show. Each bike show is also a qualifier for our Championship Shows – both the State Show and the National Championship Show which has been held as part of the I-X Piston Power Show the last several years.
The vast majority of these shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include the “people’s choice” as well as a professional eye – preventing it just being a popularity contest. Some shows, though, are Judged Shows – with the guest votes simply going towards the People’s Choice Awards.
Bikes and TOP Class Winners from the Bike Show Series are then invited to take part in the Championship Shows.
CUSTOM PAINT! All shows this year include a CUSTOM PAINT class for bikes to be considered under. You can enter your bike in just this category – or you can add it as a second classification. There is a discounted fee for adding the second category.
All Thunder Roads Shows feature trophies and placards to recognize the bikes and winners, with special prizes being added in some shows in consideration of the location and hosts. The Best of Show

FROM ACROSS THE POND “The History of Velocette Motorcycles”
By Andy Tallone, Classic-British-Motorcycles.com
1946 Velocette KSS. All K-series had OHC.
IN THE BEGINNING The early history of some of Britain’s finest motorcycle manufacturers from the classic era are surprisingly similar. Velocette was established by a German-born emigre to England, just like Triumph. Started out making bicycles, just like Triumph, BSA, Matchless and Ariel. By 1896, Johannes Gütgemann was building bicycles and in 1904 he bought out the Belgium firm Kelekom Motors and began experimenting with motorized bicycles. He’d changed his name to Taylor by this time, and his company Taylor Gue, Ltd. produced their first true motorcycle in 1905, called the Veloce, with a whopping 2-horsepower. It failed miserably and the company went broke. He had changed names again, this time to John Goodman and formed a new company, Veloce Motors Limited to produce motorcycles.
THE EARLY YEARS After some early failures, by 1913 they launched a new 2-stroke motorcycle designed by Goodman’s son Percy, who had now joined the company. They named it “Velocette”, and it was the first use of the name, by 1916 they’d changed the name of the company to Velocette. World War I started and all production was devoted to munitions for the duration. After the war, the new D1 250cc single did well in the marketplace and on the racetrack, including the Isle of Man TT. They pioneered several novel innovations for the time, like the throttle-controlled oil pump. They were also light, handled well and were powerful for their day. By 1930, Velocette had developed the D1 into their new H- series 2-strokes which they built until 1946.
52
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
VELOCETTE K-SERIES Velocette knew it needed to expand it’s product line to survive and so entered into the 4-stroke market in the early 1920’s. The new machine was to be very advanced for the times, with an overhead camshaft (OHC), 350cc displacement and a single cylinder. It was introduced in 1925 as the ‘K’ Series. Soon, the new KTT was racing at the Isle of Man TT and Brooklands. The smooth-running, reliable machines scored very well in competition and cemented Velocette’s reputation as a builder of high-quality motorcycles. Street versions were soon to follow including the Velocette KSS (Super Sports), KTP (twin exhaust ports), KN (normal). The OHC engine continued on the roadsters until 1948, continuing to pioneer new innovations such as using strobe lights for accurate ignition timing, and the world’s first positive-stop foot-actuated gearchange.
M-SERIES Velocette had great success with their OHC (Overhead Cams) singles, but in 1933, they decided to introduce a new line of OHV (Overhead Valves, ie: pushrods) machines, as a way of reducing their production costs while delivering a lower-priced motorcycle to market. The K-series had been expensive to produce. Skilled workers on the production line had to hand-assemble the tricky shaft-and-bevel camshaft drive. The simpler OHV design would be quicker to produce and would require much less highly-skilled labor to assemble. The first of these was the Velocette MOV, a 250cc single with square bore and stroke (68mm X 68mm). It was an immediate hit and proved to be an able performer, capable of 78mph (126 km/h), a stunning speed at the time. MOVs were also known for their reliability and excellent handling.

market with their radical new “LE” (it stands for “Little Engine”). The 8-horsepower 149cc water-cooled, side valve, flat-twin was mounted in an unsightly pressed-steel frame with a swing-arm and telescopic front forks. Designed by Charles Udall, it was supposed to be cheap and easy to produce, so that it could be delivered to the market at a very low price. But the radical new design (including one of the earliest examples of unitized engine/ transmission/gearbox construction) proved to be complicated and expensive to produce. Strangely, despite all this, it proved to be a runaway best-seller for Velocette, in fact their best-selling model ever! Still, the high cost of tooling and manufacture made it almost impossible for Velocette to make a profit. One nice feather in their cap was the wholesale adoption of the LE by British Police. 1938 Velocette MAC. All M-series were OHV.
THE MAC - BIGGER IS BETTER The MOV was doing so well that a larger version was needed and by lengthening the stroke, they created the 350cc Velocette MAC in 1934. It became Velocette’s best-selling model. The much-needed capital was invested in an entirely new design, a 500cc OHV single to be called the MSS in 1935. This utilized an all-new frame, developed from the MkV KTT race machines and shared this frame with the KSS MkII, 1936-48. The MSS was another runaway hit for Velocette. Speaking of racing, Velocettes took 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in the Juniors class at the 1947 Isle of Man TT, and in 1950 they won the 350cc World Championship.
1964 Velocette Vogue, “the little engine that couldn’t”
VELOCETTE VOGUE Velocette entered the 1960’s looking for direction. They thought they had it because the spartan LE had been such a good seller. So they followed up with the odd Velocette Viceroy (a weird little 2-stroke scooter) in 1960, following it up just one year later in 1961 with the gorgeous, but misguided Velocette Vogue. This fiberglass wonder was completely enclosed, offered decent rider protection, and actually looked pretty good in the flesh. But it still had only 8hp and it failed to find a market.

POST WAR & THE “LE” Immediately following World War 2, there was a pressing need in the UK for simple, inexpensive, utilitarian personal transport to get to-and-from work. Velocette attempted to tap into this THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
By the 1960s, the motorcycle market had clearly shifted away from practical, economical commuters, and toward highperformance bikes with sporting aspirations. Triumph and Norton were killing in this market, and by the mid-60s, the Japanese were taking a major bite out if it for themselves. Velocette, never having developed a vertical twin, like all the other British marques, had only it’s big singles to work with. But, they were very good at getting power out of big singles, it was their specialty. First up was the Viper. Introduced in 1956, it started out with the 500cc, but with a reduced bore, it displaced 350cc and was built like a tank. The Viper’s big brother was the 500cc Venom, launched the same year. Vipers were very fast to begin with, but Velocette made all sorts of factory racing parts available to its customers (ie: close-ratio gearboxes, racing

magnetos, rear sets, alloy rims, etc.). In 1961 a Velocette Venom became the first motorcycle in history to cover 2,400 miles in 24 hours. The Velocette Thruxton was the ultimate evolution, much faster than the Viper with its 10:1 compression and Amal TT carburetor. A Thruxton won the Isle of Man TT in 1967. Despite all this, Velocette was fighting to survive.
THE END Alas, nothing could save Velocette. Their products were hopelessly outclassed and made obsolete by the onslaught of modern, reliable bikes from Japan. They were undercapitalized and so had no hope of developing a new line of state-of-the-art machines. They were still deeply ensconced in old world manufacturing processes, which were craftsman-intensive and produced low volumes of products. Like so many classic British motorcycle manufacturers, Velocette was a dinosaur in an increasingly modern world, and in 1970 they became extinct.

THE INDIAN CONNECTION American motorcycle maker Indian had struggled for most of its life. By 1953 Indian was DOA, and passed through several hands, all of whom had their own ideas of what an Indian Motorcycle should look like. Interestingly, they were all either British- influenced, British-built or had British engines. But in 1963, motorcycle repair manual-entrepreneur Floyd Clymer bought the Indian name and in 1967 began producing Indian motorcycles in Italy with Royal Enfield engines. They were wellmade bikes with top-quality components, but too expensive to sell well. Clymer tried the same thing using Velocette 500 engines, calling the bike the Indian-Velo 500. It too failed in the market after just 122 were built.

“You’re a Daisy if You Do” I recently was afforded the opportunity to make a day trip down to Tombstone, AZ. It was a bucket list trip that presented itself unexpectedly as I had to travel to AZ for work and ended up with a free day. I learned many facts that I didn’t previously know. Hollywood has a way of painting history in dramatic effect, that seems larger than life. As I walked the streets I imagined what it would have been like back in 1881, when the streets were full of outlaws, cowboys and law enforcement. Having watched the movie of the same name many times over the years, I feel that many people probably align with Wyatt Earp and family. A solid law enforcement family trying to keep reign of the lawless, to give good common folk a chance at a peaceful, prosperous existence, without the scourge of crime of those mean, dirty outlaws. In reality, I don’t think that the intention of the Earp clan was as pure as one might have been lead to believe. In reality, Wyatt’s side chick “Shady Sadie” was a hooker. His ole lady was a drug addict. The Earp family’s ambitions included gambling, prostitution, and a handful of other nefarious “businesses”. Yes, they were also the “law”, imposing their will on the people in trade for the safety and security of being messed with by those unruly bikers… err, I mean cowboys. But you see where I’m headed with this right? Hell, even Wyatt’s good friend Doc Holliday was posted as a “known man”. Which didn’t necessarily mean he was wanted, or a criminal, it meant that he was known to be shady. He was known to “skirt the law”, yet Wyatt really liked the guy; his brothers, Morgan and Virgil, not so much. Doc practiced dentistry without a license or formal education in the industry, he drank a lot, he gambled a lot, and kept company with vagabonds and suspicious characters. But, again, Wyatt liked him, and trusted him. Real brotherhood knows no bounds. Let’s look at the McLaury’s, Clanton’s, Johnny Ringo, Curly Bill Brocious, and even town sheriff, Johnny Behan. That would be the “other club” across town. Killers? Allegedly. Thieves? Allegedly. Were they any worse than the LE Club? I mean they had the same wants, desires and ambitions of the Earp Club. They even had the town sheriff on their payroll. 68
I mean, on their side. The only difference I can see is perception. Perception that since the Earp’s wore a bigger badge, they were better than the other “club”, even if Behan also wore a badge. I’m sure it didn’t help relations that Wyatt was banging Behan’s ole lady. Even if their virtues were much the same. The sign next to the graves of Ike Clanton and the McLaury brothers says, “Murdered in the Streets of Tombstone”. Depending on which side of the fence you were on, the Earp’s were just as bad, if not worse than the outlaws. History repeats itself in many forms. When I took a step back and really looked and thought about what went on in this town, I saw so many similarities. Big Nose Kate’s Saloon, where the Clanton’s and McLaury’s partied it up the night before the OK Corral shootout, was really just a dive bar, full of whiskey, beer, music and good times. (Like many you and I visit today.) The Bird Cage
Theater, with its back entrance and $1000 per hand ($30K in today’s value) never ending poker game, and private rooms for the ladies to lighten the wallets of the drunken cowboys on pay day could be one of 1000 club houses I’ve visited. The steeds they rode across that beautiful desert I saw on the way in were much like the steel horse you ride. I couldn’t help but marvel that the landscape I was looking at, the views from Boot Hill Cemetery to the mountains afar, were in many ways untouched in over 100 years. I imagined Wyatt Earp looking out across the landscape with his sun squinted eyes, below the brim of his black Stetson... and then I went to Big Nose Kate’s Saloon to find the scourge and drink some beer. Yes, Doc and I would have made fast friends. Keep it Real… “You’re a Daisy if you Do”! My Road Name is Tabasco, and I approve this message. Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Self-Defense Skills That Will Keep You Alive by Steve Tarani The purpose of training is to gain technical skill and build personal confidence. Skill without confidence is just as ineffective as having confidence with no skill to back it up. In other words, you don’t want your mouth writing checks that your skills can’t cash.
Be it a terrorist attack, home invasion, active shooting or other undesired event, violent physical attacks on individuals who are unaware and unprepared for them are, sadly, becoming the new normal. Those who are aware and prepared are concerned about self-defense and protecting their family. What separates the prepared from the unprepared? Mindset, skills and confidence. Mindset Personal security is exactly that— personal. However, as a professional selfdefense instructor teaching worldwide, the single most common mindset I run into is “It will never happen to me.” Most people’s outlook on the subject is: “It didn’t happen to me yesterday, it hasn’t happened to me yet today, so it won’t happen to me tomorrow,” which reinforces this mindset. The second most common mindset is, “Someone else will handle it. That’s what we pay first-responders for—it’s their job.” Most people in our society believe that if they are caught in a violent physical attack, the cavalry will ride over the hill and save the day. Nothing could be further from the truth. The mindset you rarely find is: “Personal security is my responsibility.” Of the above three, which one do you think will serve you best in matters of self-defense? You guessed it. Skills and Confidence If you are a police officer, you know your success in the new normal, and that of your partner, is dependent upon your skills and confidence (gained by applied skill). If you’re a protective agent, your ability to protect those in your charge is based on these same skills and confidence. The very same holds true if you are concerned about self-defense and the protection of your family. The only way to gain skill is through training. The most elite military units in the world know that training is what makes an effective operator. As a federal-service provider for Naval Special Operations Command, it was my job to train U.S. Navy SEALs in specialized skills. What I took away from that unique experience was when SEALs are not out on assignment, they are training. Furthermore, training is what separates those with the highest skills from those without. 70 70
Confidence is built by applying your skills repeatedly until they are second nature. An example of this is tying your shoes. Odds are you’re very confident in making the knot, know which lace goes first and so forth—it happens effortlessly, because you’ve been doing it almost as long as you’ve been able to walk. Riding a bike is another example. Skill and confidence. If ever there was a preparatory solution for the new normal, it is these two aspects. Training is paramount. All skills are derived from training, and the adage holds true that repetition—the mother of all skills—breeds confidence. In the world of self-defense and personal security, there are two categories of skills needed by professionals to keep themselves and their protectees (anyone you want to keep safe) out of harm’s way: soft skills and hard skills.
eye coordination, weapon handling and marksmanship. Without hard skills, you could not physically respond to a violent threat. Hard skills, by their design, are reactive. Soft skills, by contrast, are proactive. Utilizing your most powerful weapon—your mind—you can be trained to observe, orient, decide and act appropriately to avoid or mitigate an active threat, before having no other choice but to defend against it using your hard skills. Self-Defense is 90 Percent Situational Awareness Bad things happen to good people and soft skills are your ability to hear it, see it, smell it coming and do something about it proactively—to step out of harm’s way before the need to go to hard skills. Soft skills are gained by awareness-based training, to include increasing your situational awareness via appropriate mindset and your ability to recognize a threat. Without soft skills, you wouldn’t be able to see a threat coming and would have no other choice but to rely on your hard skills. When it comes to self-defense, only 10 percent of managing a threat requires those hard skills. The initial 90 percent requires soft skills. Your mind is at your disposal 24/7. It doesn’t require bullets or batteries, and it can be trained to ensure your personal security by developing your soft skills. How can you gain these critical skills? By understanding interpersonal conflict and knowing how to recognize a threat.
Elite military units, like these Navy SEALs, train daily to develop specialized self-defense skills and gain confidence to complete their demanding missions. Soft and Hard Skills Most people purchase a firearm and keep it in a drawer, a safe or even carry it concealed, thinking of it as a lucky rabbit’s foot that will ward off all evil in the new normal. For some shooters carrying concealed, this is the extent of what it takes for self-defense against a violent physical attack—simply having a gun. Other folks may decide to get in shape and buy a gym membership. The fact of the matter is that physical strength, firearms and the skills to use them make up only 10 percent of your overall personal-security solution. Your core capability to protect yourself and those with you are divided into hard and soft skills. Hard skills are your physical capabilities that directly apply to your physically surviving personal combat (i.e. hand-to-hand combat, firearms proficiency, defensive driving). The end product of physical training, these hard skills are gained by development of hand-

dangerous odors. You can feel the change in temperature with your skin, such as standing next to fire or blast percussion. You can taste ash, pepper spray or other airborne particles. Each piece of this incoming information can be grouped into two categories for self-defense: Event Indicators and Threat Indicators. Event Indicators Event indicators are those activities which you can observe that are visual cues as to what’s going to happen next in your environment. For example, in traffic, if you observe someone pull their foot off the brake and move it toward the gas pedal, this is a visual indicator that the car is about to move faster. If someone moves their hand toward a doorknob, it is a visual indicator that the door is about to open. We see thousands of event indicators every day. However, when an event indicator gets your attention and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up—such as a closed fist or someone giving you the social finger or hairy eyeball—it is then called a threat indicator.
Soft skills for self-defense include the use of your five senses, and also that innate “sixth sense,” to help you avoid threats before they become dangerous.
Threat Indicators Bad things don’t happen to good people out of the blue. They are a gradual progression of human aggression and precursors to violence. The key to self-defense and preventing a threat from progressing into an undesired event is to first identify threat indicators. Such indicators are often your only visible clues or observable pre-attack behaviors that something bad is about to happen. Although they may sometimes be subtle, these observations can provide enough information for you to orient to your surroundings, make your decision based on updated information and then act on that decision. Using your Sixth Sense for Self-Defense Some people call it a sixth sense or a gut feeling. Sometimes called a premonition or intuitive hit, it’s where you “just know” that something isn’t quite right. It’s the most finetuned of the early-warning self-defense tools you have on board, and it’s something you can’t afford to ignore.
earliest possible warning of imminent danger—a warning that should not be ignored. Threat Indicators can be anything unusual— things you wouldn’t expect to see, such as body language, nonverbal signals, a behavior that piques your interest or that danger feeling. If something just isn’t right, seems out of place, doesn’t look right or doesn’t feel right, then it’s probably not right. Armed with an appropriate mindset, knowing how it applies to the Scale of Human Aggression and your ability to recognize a threat all contribute to your soft skills. The combination of your soft and hard skills, plus the confidence that comes from their repetitive application, ensure your self-defense in the new normal. Reprinted with Permission from www. Think of a time when you “just knew” someone was looking at you from across a room or from a car parked next to you at a red light, and when you looked, you found it was true. Or that time you were just thinking about someone with whom you hadn’t had any contact for a long time, and they suddenly called you out of the blue. It’s these intuitive hits that provide you with the

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
In a crowded city, at a busy bus stop, a woman who was waiting for a bus was wearing a tight leather skirt. As the bus stopped and it was her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus. Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little, thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her leg. Again, she tried to make the step only to discover she still couldn’t. So, a little more embarrassed, she once again reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little more. For the second time, attempted the step, and, once again, much to her chagrin, she could not raise her leg. With little smile to the driver, she again reached behind to unzip a little more and again was unable to make the step. About this time, a large Texan who was standing behind her picked her up easily by the waist and placed her gently on the step of the bus. She went ballistic and turned to the would-be samaritan and screeched, “How dare you touch my body! I don’t even know Who you are!” The Texan smiled and drawled, “Well, ma’am, normally I would agree with you, but after you unzipped my fly three times, I kinda figured we were friends.”
A hamburger walks into a bar and the bartender says, “Sorry, we don’t serve food in here.” A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says, “So, why the long face?” A skeleton walks into a bar and says, “Gimme a beer, and a mop.” A soccer ball walks into a bar. The bartender kicked him out. A magician walks down an alley and turns into a bar. A man walks into a bar. OUCH! You would have thought he would have seen it! A dyslexic guy walks into a bra. A neutron walks into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender sets the beer down and says, “For you, no charge!” An Irishman walks out of a bar. Hey, it COULD happen! A man walks into a bar and orders a shot of whiskey then looks into his pocket. He does this over and over again. Finally, the bartender asks why he orders a shot of whiskey and afterwards look into his pocket. The man responded, “I have a picture of my wife in there and when she starts to look good then i’ll go home.” A wife was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband’s key in the door. “Stay where you are,” she said. “He’s so drunk he won’t even notice you’re in bed with me.” Sure enough, the husband lurched into bed none the wiser, but a few minutes later, through a drunken haze, he saw six feet sticking out at the end of the bed. He turned to his wife: “Hey, there are six feet in this bed. There should only be four. What’s going on?” “Nonsense,” said the wife. “You’re so drunk you miscounted. Get out of bed and try again. You can see better from over there.” The husband climbed out of bed and counted. “One, two, three, four. You’re right, you know.”
A man was walking through a rather seedy section of town, when a bum walked up to him and asked the man for two dollars. The man asked, “Will you buy booze?” The bum replied, “No.” Then the man asked, “Will you gamble it away?” The bum said, “No.” Then the man asked the bum, “Will you come home with me so my wife can see what happens to a man who doesn’t drink or gamble?” There were three guys who were lost in the desert and very thirsty. Suddenly a genie apeared and offered to let them land in anything they said as they went down a slide. The first guy went down and screamed COKE! All of a sudden he was swiming in a pool of coke. The second guy, in amasement went down the slide screaming GATORADE! While the second guy was relaxing in his colorful pool, the third guy climbed up the latter to await his turn. But he tripped at the top of the ladder and screamed SHIT while he went down the slide. Little Jacob is always being teased by the other neighborhood boys for being stupid. Their favorite joke is to offer Jacob his choice between a nickel and a dime -- Little Jacob always takes the nickel. One day, after Jacob takes the nickel, a neighbor man takes him aside and says, “Jacob, those boys are making fun of you. Don’t you know that a dime is worth more than a nickel, even though the nickel’s bigger?” Jacob grins and says, “Well, if I took the dime, they’d stop doing it, and so far I’ve made $20!”

READER’S RIDE BMW F800GSA The BMW F800gsa is as comfortable on pavement as it is on a gravel road. When you want to go exploring and “find that dirt road” just put it in enduro mode and lower the tire pressure and it is a different monster. For as big and heavy as it is, the weight of 505 lb just stays balanced because of the location of the fuel tank under the seat. This 6.3-gallon tank has a range of 300 miles and makes it fun to get lost on backroads. The powerful 800 cc engine makes 85 horsepower and 61 foot-pounds of torque to easily negotiate hard terrain. The Electronic suspension control (esc) can be shut off. But when things go wrong you have the protection of the touratech crash bars and the moto overland skid plate. The bard busters hand guards keep your hands safe and protect the controls from breaking. The pivot pegs make the bike float under you and keep control during rocky hill climbs. Heidenau k60 scout tires on the front and rear are a good blend of off-road and on-road performance with a good life span of 12,000 miles. Altrider chain guard and radiator guard protect against flying rocks and damage to engine parts. Storage becomes the trick on a long road trip so, I have two set of tour bags. The green bags are ww2 canvas bag with a modified milk crate inside. They have patches with the states I have visited and other unique patches I have found. 128 liter Altrider hemisphere bags hold all the camping gear, food and tools for an excursion. These bags are waterproof and have a dual bag design with tool compartments under the main compartment. The giant loop tank bag holds what I need on the road available quickly. The Rotopax containers are 2 gallon fuel and 2 gallon storage and are easily removed with a T handle locking device. I wanted to get in to adventure riding because of my experience of riding dirt bikes and the fun of not having to take trucks with trailers places to go riding. The backcountry discovery route (BDR) films make exploring states like Colorado, Washington and Utah a journey. They have water crossings, sandy soil, rough rocks and switch back hill climbs that make riding fun and rewarding. A great story of an around the world adventure is Long way Round with Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman. They went 20,000 miles in 115 days that started in London and ended in New York. Riding an adventure bike is awesome, you would never think a motorcycle has the capabilty of a small 4x4 truck that can take you places many stock vehicle would not be able to travel.
