FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s a New Year! Pretty exciting stuff for some, and for many it’s cause for consideration of the past year and looking towards the future. Not sure, though, how things really change other than writing an 18 instead of a 17. The truth is, it’s up to us to make a change ourselves if we want 2018 to be any different than 2017. If we want 2018 to be a success and a “new beginning” if one is needed – it’s up to us to commit to that and make a change ourselves. As always, we start the year with Winter Bike Shows – and this year, we’ve got some incredible ones. Starting with Cavalcade of Customs in Cincinnati, then World of Wheels in Pittsburgh, and we close out the month with the International Motorcycle Show in Cleveland. In between we have a number of great swap meets – such as Walneck’s in Springfield and the Delaware Swap Meet just north of Columbus. All of these give us cool stuff to check out and consider for the warmer months – when we can really get two wheels out on the roads. Or maybe we can pick up stuff to work on our bikes over the winter, preparing for the riding season to come. Once again, it comes down to us considering what we want to do – how we want things to go in days and months to come. For 2018, I want to spend more time with my family and more time riding as well! I’ve worked hard the past year to set myself up for accomplishing what otherwise might be conflicting goals. We’ve built an amazing “hack” – a Harley-Davidson Road Glide with a rebuilt Vetter Terraplane sidecar mounted to the side. It’s an amazing machine that seems to create even more excitement in my kids than me when we see it, and you should see them riding in it! It’s really incredible, and allows me to satisfy both of my main priorities at the same time! So what goals do you have for the upcoming year? Want to explore new roads? Want to make it out to more bike nights, rides, or rallies? Want to try getting off the highways and discovering what its like to ride down trails or “roads” less traveled? Maybe you want to get a new bike – or even build your own ride? If so – we can help with all of that! For 2018, Thunder Roads Ohio is renewing our commitment to helping you expand your horizons and have a great time riding – wherever you want to go and on whatever you want to ride! We believe that it’s important to always “add more to the pot” and grow; because the old adage “If you always do what you’ve always done – you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten” is a lie. If you’re simply sitting in place and not moving forward, things will not stay the same – and will rarely improve on their own. Just consider that bike sitting in your garage. If you just leave it sitting there, it’s slowly going to break down. The gas will degrade, and the ethanol sludge will start blocking things. Hoses and even tires will rot, and brakes will seize. Rust might creep onto the frame and pits appear on your chrome. If she is simply left there neglected, she’s not going to maintain herself – and she’s certainly not going to improve on her own.

Our lives are much the same. It’s up to us to make the effort to maintain and keep things moving. If we want great things to occur – it’s up to us to make it happen! For 2018, I’d like to invite you to join us on the road and trails – and make sure we have some great stories to share when it’s all said and done. Let’s hit some races, go on some road trips, and rock some rallies! Let’s have a great 2018 – not because there’s anything “special” about it, but because it’s another year in our lives. And it’s up to us to make the most of it! See you out there!

OHIO BIKE WEEK CHANGES ITS DATES A new more concentrated schedule offers a higher octane rally! For the last several years, Ohio Bike Week (OBW) has kicked off sales of their All-Access VIP Rally Passes on Black Friday – and it’s often included a few announcements, usually a headliner or that Jackyl will once again be kicking off the Block Party. This year, though, they had a major announcement that may have been missed by many – they are changing their schedule and event format for 2018. Instead of running 10 days of programming up to the first weekend in June, they would instead focus on five days leading up to Memorial Day in May. The rally organizers have announced their intentions to make the change and are now working with their various partners and the city of Sandusky to make it happen. It’s not official yet, but it certainly seems as though they are set on this new course. For years, Ohio Bike Week has been the undisputed LARGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT IN THE MIDWEST and the unofficial kick-off to the summer riding season. It has evolved into one of the largest rallies in the nation, with events and rides ranging from Toledo to Sandusky. Thunder Roads Ohio has been a proud partner of the event since our inception, publishing the Official Rally Guide as our May Edition. We also added a smaller Pocket Guide several years ago, which offers the final complete schedule and guide to the various rally events / stops. Of the major national Rallies, Ohio Bike Week is one of the few that has sought to provide two full weekends – 10 days – of programming. Many of the big rallies don’t even do a full week – instead focusing on just a single weekend. It takes a lot to put on a large scale rally and the expenses go far beyond the big name entertainment on stage. The operational and support staff, emergency services, and all of the logistical considerations and expenses add up for every day that the event is hosted. Many of these expenses add up regardless of the number of people attending or if an event is rained out. For many, the Rally was just too long. Few people can afford to take a full 10 days off work or away from home, so most riders 8

were forced to choose between one weekend or another. There were also always a few “down days” – usually Monday and Tuesday, where there really wasn’t much going on. By tightening the schedule to a concentrated 5 days – it eliminates the dead days and allows the organizers to focus their energy and resources to really blowing it out one weekend. From the sound of things, though, all of the major rides and aspects of Ohio Bike Week will still be incorporated into the new schedule. The Kelly’s Island Ride, the wine ride, and most importantly – the Thunder Roads Pool Party have all been worked into the new format. Seriously, though, the biggest advantage in our minds is that the Downtown Block Party now runs through the entire event. It’s actually expanded to at least another full day – with vendors, entertainment and festivities now running through Sunday on the streets of downtown Sandusky (tentatively) with the new schedule. It had always seemed confusing and disappointing to new folks attending the rally that nothing happened beyond the Barrel House Pier in downtown Sandusky the first weekend. For those only attending that weekend, it always seemed to leave a bad impression. With the single weekend, the Block Party will now extend through the entire rally. Rally organizers are also clearly excited about the prospects of being able to concentrate their resources on the Memorial weekend. If everything goes as planned, it sounds as though it will be the biggest biker party of the year for at least 600 miles! Probably the only “casualty” of the change,

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

thus far, seems to be the kick-off concert in Toledo. With the concentrated format and Block Party running the entire time, it really doesn’t make sense to hold a concert more than 50 miles away the first night of the Block Party. While that may sound disappointing to some, we hope that this prompts OBW organizers to spin the Toledo aspect off into its own separate rally. We’ve always enjoyed the kick-off concert and thought that Toledo Harley-Davidson was a great location for it – but wondered why it was only the one night. Toledo is a great town with a great motorcycle community. It should have its own rally and this change may prompt the OBW folks to finally spin off a second major event here. Maybe in the Fall? Please note that all of this is tentative at this point and “unofficial”. Ohio Bike Week has announced the change in dates on their website and through social media; but it is still pending official approval by the City of Sandusky, as we understand it. From the sound of things, though – we think that this could be a GREAT change for the rally and really allow it to become even better. Stay tuned for more updates! You can visit OhioBikeWeek.com and their facebook page for official news. Of course, we will continue to post news on our facebook page (www. facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) and our new Blog at ThunderRoadsOhio.com For more information on the Official Ohio Bike Week Rally Guides or how you might get involved in various events across Ohio, you can email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

LUMILOR TAKES THE STAGE! Ohio electroluminescence paint lights up the world There are countless stories, every day, about cutting edge technologies that are changing the world as we know it. One such story has started right here in Northeast Ohio – but has lit up the world and made things just a bit cooler on the car and bike show circuits. And even cooler – a long time friend of Thunder Roads is at the helm! World renowned artist, Pete Gonzales – formerly an instructor at Power Sports Institute and Ohio Technical College, is now the Chief Operating Officer at Lumilor / Darkside Scientific. The patented LumiLor Electroluminescent Coating System™ (www.lumilor.com) is a practical and durable electroluminescent (EL) coating technology that is energized with an electrical current. Used in conjunction with simple driver electronics LumiLor’s light can be controlled while being applied to almost any surface. It can even go over curves and around corners. More simply said – it’s paint that lights up at your control! Simply hit a switch to turn LumiLor™ on and electroluminescent (EL) light is generated, effectively transforming any surface coated into a lamp. And when the power is turned off, LumiLor™ reverts to the appearance of a traditional paint job. Created by Darkside Scientific, LumiLor™ can be used for everything from radical customization in the automotive aftermarket to illuminating just about anything in the primary markets in amazing ways that were just not possible before. For several years now, we’ve seen amazing custom motorcycles come to life with complex paint schemes utilizing Lumilor – and often designed by Pete himself. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show is the premier automotive / motorsports specialty products trade event in the world and draws over 70,000 to view more than 3,000 new products (based on 2017 numbers). It is the industry’s chance to showcase the most exciting and cuttingedge technology, and this past year’s show recognized Pete Gonzales and Lumilor with several awards including – 1st Place GEN III Innovator of the Year for all of SEMA and 2nd Emerging Trends and Technology Network (ETTN) “Techie” Award for the latest and greatest technology of the year. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

This CamTech Road Glide featured a very cool graffiti style design that incorporated Lumilor into the design to give a great effect after dark - once the switch was flipped!

Here’s the official announcement – Creating light with paint! Helping people change their ideas or the way they think about light. Pete has been a part of the ground breaking team and was the inventors right hand man to bring to the world in the form of a sprayable application, called LumiLor. Light that is applied in paint form and can be applied to any substrate without changing its form or function and now turning that substrate into a lamp. Pete has designed, developed, and implemented training criteria that is broken down to the simplest form to allow anyone of any walk of life to understand the way LumiLor is applied and created. He has taken the aftermarket to a new level with a product that is simply limited by your imagination in creating training programs for all aftermarket that are offered online, onsite, or in house (@ Darkside) from his extensive teaching background. Worldwide these locations include Germany, Switzerland, China, Japan, Taiwan, UK, Australia, and many more in the distribution area of the aftermarket and all have been trained from the programs Pete developed. He has also implemented standards and structure for prototyping with all OEMs world wide and has worked side by side with the top executives in each company to create mind blowing prototypes that are now in process for mass application. Many OEMS are excited to announce their “Worlds First” and is being researched in many of these categories for Guinness Book of World Records that have been created closely with Airbus, Ford Performance, GM, Lexus (heartbeat car), Pepsi, Tesla and so on. Pete has develop the Darkside Scientific Team as it exists today and is proud to announce the achievement of a Tesla Innovation Award. We’d like to congratulate Pete and everyone at Darkside Scientific on the success of Lumilor and the recognition that it’s getting. Not only is it an Ohio company – they all seem to be really cool guys too. From the first time we met Pete years ago and hosted airbrush demonstrations with him at Sportsterz during Thunder on the Strip – he struck us as not only talented, but a great guy with a passion for sharing his art and teaching others. Now it seems as though the entire world is his canvas as some of the biggest companies in the world are lining up to share in his newest passion. And how cool is that?!? Congrats Pete!

2018 REGIONAL MOTORCYCLE EVENTS CALENDARS AND ORGANIZATIONAL MEETINGS One of our core business objectives and mission statement principles is to partner with both charitable and professional organizations/ individuals involved with hosting motorcycle events. We are a professional event management and marketing company – and events are what we do. In many cases we can help out local organizations as they launch events or help maintain ones already underway. Sure, it’s good for business – but it also helps strengthen the motorcycle community by helping more events to succeed. One of our most successful partnerships has been with the Greater Akron Motorcycle Club in regard to the production of the GREATER AKRON AREA MOTORCYCLE EVENTS CALENDAR. Based upon an initiative started by Rich Robinson, a past President of GAMC, the Events Calendar serves as a comprehensive resource for motorcycle enthusiasts to reference for rides, bike nights, benefits, and other related events throughout the area. The Event Calendars help support local charities and non-profit events throughout the area as well by providing a means of effectively informing riders of their events. This entire endeavor is done to serve the motorcycle community and help support local charities. Beyond the services provided, OVER $20,000 has been distributed to help support local nonprofit organizations and charitable events since the Calendar’s launch. In 2017, Thunder Roads Ohio expanded this program to TOLEDO with the TOLEDO / NORTHWESTERN OHIO EDITION. For 2018, we are looking to add at least two more REGIONAL MOTORCYCLE EVENTS CALENDARS. We are currently in discussion with several charitable motorcycle organizations in regards to partnering in various areas. As in years past, the process will begin with an organizational meeting hosted with our regional partners. The first will be held at The Greater Akron Motorcycle Club for discussion of the GREATER AKRON REGIONAL EVENTS CALENDAR – and ALL are welcome to attend. These meetings are a great opportunity for charitable organizations, bar owners, local promoters, and other event organizers to discuss dates, exchange months in advance for their rides, bikes shows, and other events 12

knowing what else is going on that same day or weekend. In addition, there will also be a round table discussion on how to promote local events, obtain insurance and sanctioning from the AMA, organize volunteers, and other topics of interest to event organizers.

The meetings are free to attend and there is no obligation or big sales pitch associated with it. We do request advance registration, though, so we can plan accordingly. Please confirm your spot by emailing ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com with information on your organizations and event(s) and who will be attending.

GREATER AKRON REGIONAL EVENTS MEETING Sunday, January 21, 2018

We will reply back with confirmation and details on times, etc..

Meeting starts at 1pm, Doors open at Noon for informal Meet n Greet Greater Akron Motorcycle Club House 1540 Smith Rd, Akron Ohio

Work is underway on organizing additional Motorcycle Event Calendars in Cincinnati, Columbus, Sandusky, and Northeast Ohio.

REPORT The AMA Files Supreme Court Brief on Behalf of Motorcyclists Rights PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association filed an amicus brief with the highest court in the land Nov. 20 defending the rights of motorcyclists against unlawful search and seizure as protected by the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The amicus brief was filed in case No. 16-1027, Ryan Austin Collins v. Commonwealth of Virginia. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled that, because Collins’ vehicle was a motorcycle and not a car or truck, the officers who searched under Collins’ motorcycle cover did not need a warrant to do so. The AMA’s brief argues that the judgment of the lower court should be reversed. AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman stated that the amicus brief points out an example of how motorcyclists’ rights can be threatened at all levels—and branches—of government. The AMA’s

brief states: “This Court’s analysis should not be affected by the fact the vehicle searched was a motorcycle rather than a car or truck. ... There is nothing inherently suspicious—and no inherent justification for a search—in the use or ownership of a motorcycle.” The brief points out that a motorcycle cover is commonly used to protect motorcycles from the elements, to provide privacy and to prevent theft. “By removing and looking beneath the cover of the motorcycle parked in the curtilage of the home, the police conducted a warrantless search in violation of the Fourth Amendment,” the brief continues. While the AMA’s brief expresses no opinion regarding the petitioner’s ultimate guilt or innocence of the alleged crime, it emphasizes that motorcycles should not be subjected to unreasonable searches and seizures. The consequences of the erosion of motorcyclists’ protections under the Fourth Amendment would be severe.

Scotty offers 2 Wheeled “Uber” in Turkey! ISTANBUL, Turkey — A new app with a name derived from the Star Trek TV show helps residents and visitors find a ride on a motorcycle. The app, called Scotty, features a “Beam Me Up” button that summons a motorcyclist to your location. The service is similar to Uber and Lyft, with 2,000 riders logging 150,000 rides since it was introduced. According to a report in USA Today, Scotty is strict about its hiring practices. Riders must have five years of experience, pass Scotty’s driving exams, take a psychological evaluation and bring their bikes in for a monthly checkup. The riders’ skills are also tested on a track.

Tis the season to get comfy.

KTM AMA National Adventure Riding Series schedule released for 2018 Twenty opportunities to get out and ride! PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Adventure motorcycle riding continues to command the attention of American motorcyclists with new models and new opportunities to explore the unknown from coast to coast. And the best rides and routes can be found on the KTM AMA National Adventure Riding Series 2018 schedule that the American Motorcyclist Association announced today. AMA Recreational Riding Manager Heather Wilson said that the series has served a number of adventure motorcyclists since its inception in 2007, and is continuing that tradition for 2018. “Many men and women are upgrading to larger, yet more versatile, bikes to be able to explore highways and back roads,” Wilson said. “We are proud to provide AMA members with opportunities to get out and ride. And we appreciate KTM’s support for the series and the company’s commitment to the adventure riding segment.” For 2018, the series is once again sponsored by KTM, which makes a full lineup of cutting–edge adventure bikes that can conquer anything the series has to offer. “KTM is excited to return as a sponsor. We saw fantastic growth in the series in 2017,” said KTM Ride Orange Manager Mark Hyde. “Our staff had a great time meeting the riders at many of the national adventure rides this year and we have expanded our staff to support even more events next year.” The 2018 KTM AMA National Adventure Riding Series schedule boasts 20 events throughout the country. Some longtime national adventure riding event organizers remain on the schedule, while other organizers who have been hosting adventure rides for many years have been added. Returning this year is the KTM East Coast Adventure Rider Rally. The event is hosted by Pine Barrens Adventures LLC, and KTM will provide additional support. KTM Ride Orange Event Specialist and eight– time AMA National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty praised the event organizers who host these quality events. “A lot of planning and physical labor go into hosting an event,” Lafferty said. “Without organizers like these, it wouldn’t be as easy for an adventure rider to find other motorcyclists who enjoy this style of riding or to find routes they may not think to travel on their own.” THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

REPORT 2018 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship Area Qualifiers and Regional Championships dates announced First Area Qualifiers kick off Feb. 17 PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased to announce the AMA Area Qualifier and Regional Championship schedule for the 2018 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Lucas Oil. “The AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is one of the most highly sought after amateur motocross championships in the country,” AMA Motocross Manager Ricky Rickords said. “Competing in Area Qualifiers and qualifying for AMA Regional Championships is the path all racers take for a chance to win an AMA National Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. The AMA and MX Sports have worked diligently to ensure that AMA members and their families are provided the best tracks and racing facilities at each qualifying event.” Area Qualifiers are the first step in qualifying for the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship held July 30-Aug. 4 at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. The first of 58 Area Qualifiers begin in February and run through the end of May, across 35 states. Racers of all ages will compete in various engine displacement classes, from 50cc to 450cc, in hopes of moving on to a Regional Championship.

The AMA Regional Championships then serve as the next step to seed riders into the annual AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. Only riders who finish in a qualifying position at one of the 13 Regional Championship events are eligible to race the amateur national event at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. “The unveiling of the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship schedule is always highly anticipated, not just for the riders but for the organizers,” Director of MX Sports Tim Cotter said. “The facilities and organizers that make up the Area Qualifier and Regional Championships are among the best in the nation. Each race organizer that has been selected is excited that the road to Loretta’s goes through their facility.” This year’s lineup includes many historic tracks, such as Unadilla MX and High Point Raceway in the Northeast. Racing also returns to other favorites, such as the Southeast’s Muddy Creek Raceway, RedBud MX in the Mid-East and Thunder Valley MX Park in the South-Central region. The AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is one of the longest-running motorsports championships in the country. The AMA launched the national championship program in 1975. That year, a series of

regional races qualified 135 riders in three classes -- 125cc, 250cc and Open -- for the championship round in Baldwin, Kan. There, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship continues to crown the country’s top amateur motocross racers every summer. ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, Happy New Year to all. I’m happy to have made another one and it’s going to be a great year. I usually start every article with the stats, but we have none because it’s a new year. I have not seen any of the stats to finish the 2017 year out. After the 15th of the month I should have the year-end figures to report. If nothing changes in December, we should have a 25% decrease in fatalities in 2017 over 2016. I hope this article finds everyone putting up with old man winter. This is a bad time for all bikers with no runs on the calendar. Get online and find a Swap Meet to go to. You can find lots of stuff to look at and get ideas that just might work on your ride. One time I was looking at seats, you know a seat for a short old fat guy, and just could not come up with the $500.00 that it was going to take for a seat that I may not like when I try it so I found one that someone else did not like and it did not cost that much. Then I put a gel pack in it and it worked out just fine. I feel that January and February are months to work on your sweetheart, to check everything for a future problem. If it is shiny it could be wearing and that could be a problem. Look in your shop manual, (if you are making adjustments you will need a shop manual) and you will find a checklist for maintenance. Follow

it and you will cover all critical points and you won’t miss anything. If you have your work done at a dealer, ask for the list that they will be using. It may remind you of something that was giving you a problem when riding. Most shops will move the handlebars from side to side if they feel nothing then it passes, but when you’re riding you may feel that catch in the neck bearing. Tell them if something feels wrong. With the New Year we need to help Motorcycle Ohio, our riders training program. They are hunting for instructors. This is a job that really pays well, about $26.00 per hour. Also they are in need of some new training locations. Remember, it needs a big lot to ride in with no obstructions. We should always remember that this program is partly funded by us; $6.00 of your motorcycle registration goes to this program. They have beginner classes, advanced classes and two-up classes. You receive your endorsement when you complete the beginner class. In Ohio for years we have had a law that we cannot plug both of our ears. We can plug one ear or we can have a sound source in one ear but not both. There has been a bill introduced that will let us have ear protection in both ears. Some legislators feel that this may limit us from hearing emergency vehicles but as we know, we can still hear with ear plugs in. You cannot

hear with music playing. Several groups have testified that we are in favor of this bill, ABATE being one of them. So when or if you talk to a legislator, tell them that we support this bill. 2018 is the 40 Year Anniversary for ABATE of Ohio. For many of those years ABATE of Ohio has put on a Legislative and Safety and Educational Seminar. The 2018 Seminar will be April 7th at Crown Plaza, Columbus North. It will be covering how ABATE works, what laws are under review, what the MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation in Washington DC) is doing with federal laws and how YOU can make a difference. Go to ABATE.com and check out all the information. This is open to the public with a small charge for registration. Now that everyone has their calendars out, you need to make plans to attend the Awareness Rally Saturday May 5, 2018 to kick off Motorcycle Awareness Month. We will be gathering at A.D. Farrows Harley Davidson in Sunbury, Ohio starting at 9AM, then parading to the Ohio State House. There will also be an After Rally Party to give everyone a chance to hang out. Hope to see you there. For more info, check us out online at ABATE.com. Ride Within Your Limits,

CMA Redeem, Release, Return, Renew, Restore! The following is an excerpt from a Bible study with Jerry Williams. Many CMAers will know who Jerry is. For those who don’t just understand he is a man of God. Jeremiah 30:1-11 AMPC, “The Word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Write all the words that I have spoken to you in a book. For, note well, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will release from captivity My people Israel and Judah, says the Lord, and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they will possess it.” And these are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: Thus says the Lord: We have heard a voice of trembling and panic-of terror, and not peace. Ask now and see whether a man can give birth to a child? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his loins like a woman in labor? Why are all faces turned pale? Alas! For that day will be great, so that none will be like it; it will be the time of Jacob’s [unequaled] trouble, but he will be saved out of it. For it will come to pass in that day, says the Lord of hosts, that I will break [the oppressor’s] yoke from your neck, and I will burst your bonds; and strangers will no more make slaves of [the people of Israel]. But they will serve the Lord their God and David’s [descendant] their King, Whom I will raise up for them. Therefore fear not, O My servant Jacob, says the Lord, nor be dismayed or cast down, O Israel; for behold, I will save you out of a distant land [of exile] and your posterity from the land of their captivity. Jacob will return and will be quiet and at ease, and none will make him afraid or cause him to be terrorized and to tremble. For I am with you, says the Lord, to save you;” I’m not sure who wrote this poem titled “Just One Holy Man” but please read it: “Battle lines of long ago are memories that our fathers hold Of men who walked the land in holiness

They’re stories of a different time when holy men who lived and died Conquered by the blood of the Lamb They traveled over land and sea with courage and a firm belief That God alone is worthy of our praise Men who weren’t afraid to die, who lived a life of sacrifice And made the world they knew a better place All the stories they tell say the demons in hell Would cry and come out with one command The people in cities and towns would fall down on their knees in the presence Of just one holy man Where in all the land today are men who take the time to pray And call upon the Lord in holiness? Those who aren’t afraid to die, who’ll live a life of sacrifice And make the world they know a better place? Will the people in hell stand in judgment and tell How they lived in a time when no man would pray? Will children we see ever come to believe in the power of God Through just one holy man? The world has not seen all that Jesus can do When someone commits to His plan The fire starts to burn, and then soon there are two Because of the presence, because of the presence, because of the presence Of just one holy man!” Here’s a few questions for you: Are you living a “radical faith” where your faith is immovable, steadfast in your convictions, unshakable in your confidence that God would provide, protect, deliver, heal, help, empower and accomplish His purpose in and through your life? KENNEDY STYLE

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

Hare Scrambles & Our Rock Star Racer They come in all shapes all sizes. The guys and girls that road race, flat track, and motocross can be a mom, a dad, a teacher, engineer, mechanic or even a rock star. Bring on Billy Morris. Some of you know him from his days with Warrant. Some of you know him from Sunset Strip playing a weekend gig. But not many know Billy Morris the racer. I know from our weekends at AMA Vintage Days at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course that one of the events is the Hare Scramble. Billy races there that weekend and it was my introduction to the hare scramble. But I never really understood exactly what this type of racing entailed. My Hare Scrambles expert, Billy, explains that where motocross is on a track with jumps and berms usually manicured to perfection, a hare scramble is usually a combination of woods, fields and water crossings that gets rutted and broken down during the race. Motocross is a short sprint and two motos. A hare scramble is a two hour marathon. Hare scrambles are also a dead engine start. The flag man raises the flag, you start your bike and go trying to complete as many laps in the two hour race.

Legend has it that hare scrambles were named by Amherst’s own, John Penton. He described them as a cross between the scrambles in England and the hare and the hound races from the west coast of America. The first hare scramble was held at the Mansfield Motorcycle Club in Ohio. The Mansfield Motorcycle Club is a great place to start. It’s a smaller course with great people running the race. Billy explains that hare scramble people are a close knit group that help each other out and get along very well...usually. Racing is a family affair. Billy’s dad, Big Bill Morris, raced Penton motorcycles in the 70s. Billy says his five year old son, Penton (named after famed racer John Penton) is now in his first year racing hare scrambles in the Jr Pee Wee class riding a KTM 50. There is more to the story to tell and perhaps we can get Billy himself to write about his ‘over the river and through the woods’ adventures. Until then however ride safe, Denise Kennedy

Local races usually consist of A, B and C classes (A being the fastest and most experienced riders) and age groups of 30, 40, 50 and 56+ classes. The beginner’s class is called Woodsman and there are Pro Classes as well as a Bomber Class for bikes older than 1997. Basically there is a class for everyone. Races are timed. Thirty minutes for Pee Wee. Mini classes are 60 minutes and the ‘Big Bikes’ are two hours. Big bikes classes run simultaneously. Lappers are to move over and let fast riders pass. The layout of the course in most cases starts in an open field where all the bikes race into an opening in the woods. Riders follow arrows through the woods, up and down hills, single track, rocks, logs and water crossings for between 2 and sometimes up to 12 miles. Then it’s through a checkpoint and on to another lap. VINTAGE DAYS photos courtesy AMA. 24

PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Its been a great summer and the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN is winding down, in terms of the active Ride Stops and ride events. However, Thunder Roads Ohio is pleased to announce that we will be continuing SOCIAL MEDIA checkin’s and prize awards YEAR ROUND! Earlier this year, TRO added social media check-in’s – allowing riders to check in through their smart phones and social media at Ride Stops and events that Thunder Roads was it. Riders can continue to do this now YEAR ROUND, and we will award prizes each month to randomly selected check-in’s. As we head into the “off-season”, we encourage you to check in at any offering Thunder Roads Ohio or anywhere we’re at. You can also take a picture and post from your favorite ride stops – and simply tell us “This should be a RIDE STOP!” It has to be a publicly accessible ride stop – such as a restaurant, bar, shop, dealership, or other location of interest to riders.

Here’s how it works THUNDER ROADS OHIO / BUCKEYE THUNDE RUN SOCIAL MEDIA CHECK-IN’s 1. 2. 3. 4.

TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AND CHECK IN AT YOUR LOCATION. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #ThunderRoadsOH It’s that simple.

PLEASE NOTE - Some OFFICIAL RIDE STOPS will still offer Check-In boards, but most will only be doing this during the primary riding season.

State and Stop Prizes Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win! As always, the beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! 26

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number online at www.ThunderRoadsOhio.US. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • • • •

Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

It’s really that simple! 1. 2. 3. 4.

Get your Ohio Ride Card. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. And then you win cool prizes!

The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points or anywhere we are set up at – free of charge. You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www. ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

1940 Indian Military Chief 340B General Eisenhower General Eisenhower as nicknamed by Ray Dey is a 1940 Indian Military Chief 340B. Ray is a very active 81 year old legend in the Nashville motorcycle community. Ray started his motorcycle repair shop at the age of 18 in 1954 and it is still operating today. Eisenhower is a mostly original and matching numbers bike. At 74 Cubic Inches and 1200CC the Military Chief was one of the largest motorcycles to be used by any military during World War 2. The US Army purchased 115 documented solo Military Chiefs and 900 side car equipped Chiefs during World War 2. Eisenhower is a documented 1 of 115 solo bikes making it one of the rarest motorcycles of World War 2. Eisenhower was restored from a basket case by renowned lifelong Indian Motorcycle enthusiast Robin Markey of Pennsylvania. As it was built in 1940 the bike retains its left grip throttle, right grip spark advance, foot clutch, and right side stick gear shift. Because of its size and displacement Eisenhower has no problem maintaining today’s highway speeds. After restoration Eisenhower spent several years in a military memorabilia museum until acquired by Kenneth and Melissa Brown of Gallatin, Tennessee. Due to mechanical neglect in the museum the bike was not running when acquired. With the help of Ray Dey the General runs and functions like new today and can often be seen on the streets and country roads of Middle Tennessee.

Sport Touring Corner What is Sport Touring? By Norm Kern In this new column we are going to talk about sport touring- the riders, the bikes, places to go and a lot more. What exactly is a sport touring motorcycle and what makes someone a sport touring rider? First, the sport touring rider views motorcycling as a skill-based sport. That doesn’t mean they are necessarily interested in racing or competition, but rather they look forward to a challenge and enjoy practicing and developing their riding skill. It’s not just riding a beautiful road, it’s riding it in complete control at a brisk pace, what many riders call “in the zone.” That’s the “sport” part of sport touring. The “touring” part is that a typical riding day covers several hundred miles and is often part of multi-day travel on the bike rather than towing the bike and riding it at the destination.

Most sport touring bikes have shaft drive and liquid cooled engines. These features enable more power, less maintenance and less mechanical noise. Since the engine and radiator is inside the fairing, hot air can be ducted out the bottom and sides far enough that the rider avoids most of the heat. Since sport touring bikes come from the factory with plenty of horsepower, there is rarely need for engine or exhaust modifications, leaving plenty of time and money for other refinements. Sport touring riders are serious about riding safety. Many have taken safety and advanced riding courses to develop their skills. Most wear helmets, boots, jackets, gloves and other armored riding gear.

One of my favorite things about my fellow sport touring riders is that they are responsible people you can feel safe riding with, but that also brings up a question. Where does the sport touring enthusiast find like-minded riders? After being mostly away from riding for several years while establishing a business, in 2001 I purchased a Honda ST1100 and began looking for people to ride with. I stumbled onto a small ad in a magazine for Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA). Contacting one of the officers to learn more, I was invited to an informal Spring ride.

The sportbike that is so much fun to ride “in the zone” is not comfortable enough for most people to ride all day or a long distance. Enter the sport touring bike. Start with a large displacement sportbike that combines power, handling, braking and control. Modify it to be comfortable to ride 250+ miles per day and on long trips. Typical factory modifications include comfortable seating for two normal sized people, hard luggage, a fairing for wind protection, electric adjustable windshield, large fuel tank, heated grips, cruise control, etc. Although some riders add forward highway footpegs for an alternate leg position, footpegs are under the rider for maximum control, typically placed as low as possible while preserving cornering clearance. Taller handlebars, placed closer to the rider to allow for a more upright riding position, complete the package.

I was delighted when I arrived that day at the parking lot in Harrison, Indiana. A wide variety of brands and bike models were on hand, along with about fifty friendly people, mostly suited up in nice riding gear. I thought, “Here are all the people I’ve always wanted to ride with! Why didn’t I find out about this club sooner?”

About Norm Kern Norm Kern, long time Dayton Motorcycle Club member and MSTA member, has been riding a number of bike styles for over 50 years, including British sportbikes of the ‘60s, pure touring bikes such as the classic Moto Guzzis of the ‘70s, plus off-road enduros and dual sport riding on a variety of dirt bikes. During his 50+ years of motorcycling, he’s owned a motorcycle shop and done mechanical work as well.

The day’s route, with riders in small groups of four to eight people, wound through small twisty back roads in southeast Indiana, crossed the Ohio River at Markland dam, then on the back roads of Kentucky to the mid-afternoon lunch stop at Dry Ridge. After a nice lunch with new friends, I headed home to Dayton, Ohio; about 250 miles for the day.

Most of Norm’s miles have been on the road. He’s always enjoyed day rides and long trips, and finds the twisty mountainous roads of the Appalachian Mountains to be his favorite. Norm found he liked a brisk pace, and lost interest in large pure touring bikes in the 1980s.

MSTA is a national club that has a strong presence in Ohio and Indiana area. They have a website (ridemsta.com) and have monthly breakfast/brunch rides in several locations, but their greatest attraction is the unique regional and national rallies that the club promotes. Unlike most, these are RIDING rallies, held in locations with the best roads. Curated routes are provided in GPS and map form, carefully crafted by local members who know every good road in the region and have cleverly strung them together into spectacular routes. Typical route length is 150-350 miles in a day.

In 1986, he had an opportunity to trade a friend for an almost new Kawasaki Concours. With over 100 horsepower, decent adjustable suspension, cornering clearance, good brakes, shaft drive, large tank and fairing, it turned him into a sport touring rider for good. Since then, Norm’s had a Honda ST1100, ST1300, and a 2014 Yamaha FJR1300ES, riding about 150 k miles since 2001. Since getting the FJR, he’s been riding about 20k miles per year, mostly on four day weekend trips.

A typical rally has half a dozen or more routes of varying length and complexity to choose from. When you attend a MSTA rally, you will be riding with a small (typically 2-6) group of riders who are safe, experienced, wear gear and ride wellmaintained bikes. Unlike a social club’s events, the parking lot is empty during the day because everyone comes to RIDE. If this kind of rally appeals to you, there is no better place to find it than MSTA. In the coming months, we’ll be talking about lots of sport touring and related topics, including adventure, dual sport and long distance riding. Feel free to email me at nkern@kernvideo.com with comments, questions or things you’d like to see in the Sport Touring Corner.

Hello everyone, I wanted to take a moment to provide you all an update. We departed Deadhorse, Alaska (Prudhoe Bay) on November 11th as planned in order to time our upcoming Darien Gap crossing with the Panamanian dry season in January. Our first day was a long and grueling 250 miles to Coldfoot Camp. Thanks to the professionalism of the truckers along the Dalton, the State of Alaska Department of Transportation’s timely road clearing, and the many companies along the way that provided us weather updates, the Dalton was successfully completed in 3 days. The sidecars performed well and served their purpose, as did the studded Dunlop 606 tires we ran. Despite a few setbacks, things went well through Alaska and Canada. As you may have heard, on day 10 one of our riders Richard Doering was struck by a car that lost control on the icy road and entered his lane. Rich was lucky only to sustain minor injuries, and after wrenching on his bike for a few days we expect him to be back on the road.

Despite some heavy snowfall, a flood, and two landslides, we had an uneventful trip through the rest of B.C. to the U.S. Border. We are sorry we didn’t have time to link up with more of our supporters in Canada, but we have been trying to move fast to get out of the cold and spend the Thanksgiving holiday with family in Portland, Oregon. Everyone is taking a break this weekend before we enter into Phase Two of the expedition: the U.S. and Mexico. Thanks again to everyone in Alaska and Canada for your hospitality and grace. Wayne Mitchell “Did you all eat stupid flakes for breakfast??” -Random Trucker on the Dalton Highway

Despite what has been going back and forth on the social media posts and comments, here are the facts: We departed Smithers, B.C. during daylight. All riders wore high visibility clothing, had studded winter tires on their bikes, and we had emergency equipment on hand. The vehicle that struck Rich had studded tires but lost control while trying to pass him in the passing lane. Rich was traveling at 10 miles below the posted speed limit sign due to the road conditions. We are glad that everyone was ok and that the incident is behind us. We are also grateful to the people of B.C. and the professionalism of the local fire, EMS, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police for their help.

Day 10: Smithers to Prince George, BC. Things got real yesterday. Someone driving carelessly lost control of their car and gave Rich a love tap. He’s doing good, nothing broken. Bike is fixable. The set back also cost us enough time for a bad storm to move in and we were riding in some seriously hairy conditions with lots of truck traffic on the road. It made the Dalton feel easy. But we did get a police escort into Prince George. Thank you again to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the first responders from Burns Lake, BC.

January 26-28, 2018 Cleveland I-X Center Wintertime is time for indoor bike shows here in the Midwest, and the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS) is the biggest. These shows have been touring the nation for over 30 years, offering a taste of just about everything “motorcycle” that you could think of. IMS differs from many of the other winter shows due to the fact that it features OEM manufacturers and new bikes – in addition to customs, stunt shows, gear, and so much more! IMS is where the manufacturers introduce the year’s new bikes to the consumers – and in many cases they have their entire lineup on display for consideration. Motorcycle enthusiasts can view just about every new motorcycle offered all in one place – under the same roof. I can’t think of another opportunity anywhere for that. Most of the bikes are also right there on the floor where riders can climb on and really get a feel for them. Another unique aspect of the IMS shows is that they cover virtually the entire scope of the motorcycle community – much like Thunder Roads! Dirt bikes, touring bikes, street bikes, scooters, and even ATV’s and side by sides are all on the floor. And not just the new ones. Incredibly restored vintage bikes, legendary rides from years past, and incredible custom builds are all on display. “As the world’s largest consumer motorcycle show, IMS brings together the best of the industry under one roof—from our longtime partners and exhibitors, to new brands and initiatives, to the local communities,” said Tracy Harris, senior vice president, Progressive International Motorcycle Shows. “Signing Fitz Army to headline our stunt show is one more way we’re bringing the most compelling, in demand content and experiences to our attendees this year.”

will be joined by fellow Fitz Army riders and special guest Vicky Golden (AKA “Golden Girl”). A professional rider for over seven years, Golden is a three-time gold medalist at the X Games and the only female to qualify for Supercross. For many, the most exciting bikes not flying through the air are found in the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. Custom builders from around the world and in our own backyard are invited to compete for nearly $100,000 in awards in six different classes. It’s not just the money, though, for many of the builders. The chance to showcase their builds in the midst of all the industry giants and in front of THOUSANDS of motorcycle enthusiasts brings out the very best that the builder community has to offer.

Manufacturer displays, high energy stunt shows, celebrity appearances, free seminars, the chance to win 3 FREE motorcycles - and so much more! What more could a Midwest rider ask for in the middle of winter? Oh – of course THUNDER ROADS OHIO will be there as well! We will be set up as a Ride Stop, so bring your RIDE CARDS for a chance to win a $500 GIFT CARD just by checking in at the TRO Booth! Don’t have a Ride Card? No worries – we can hook you up with one as well!

See you there!

The Iron Cowboy!

Once again, the Progressive® IMS Tour is offering a mobile app and digital interface that will allow consumers to seamlessly interact with main show attractions and participating brands. Through the swipe of an Event Pass, attendees can participate in an experience called WIN PLAY VOTE, allowing them to win prizes, play games, join activities and share it all in real time socially. Participating attendees also have the chance to win 3 different motorcycles – a new 2018 Husqvarna 701 Enduro, an Indian Scout Bobber, or Kawasaki Z125 Pro! There’s also a chance to win a guided motorcycle tour of the Alps from Edelweiss Bike Tour.

“Fitz Army is stoked to be a part of IMS this year, bringing the top FMX athletes and tricks to the stage,” said Jimmy Fitzpatrick, leader of Fitz Army. “If you’re coming to watch Fitz Army perform, make sure to bring an extra pair of underwear, you’re going to need it!” Attendees will witness the Metal Mulisha Fitz Army performing stunts like KOD (kiss of death) flips, whips, and heart attacks. FROM ACROSS THE POND THE FEATHERBED FRAME RELIEF AT LAST

by Andy Tallone, Classic-British-Motorcycles.com

Around this time, two brothers, self-taught motorcycle designers from Belfast, Rex and Cromie McCandless, were experimenting with rear swing-arm suspension setups. They designed and built several prototypes of Triumphs with the bolt-on rigid rear section removed and replaced with their own rear frame section with swing arm and two vertical shock absorbers, borrowed from a Citroen car. BSA bought several of the prototypes for study, but typical of BSA, they never did anything with it until someone else did first. So, they dithered on one of the most important design decisions that needed to be made in the motorcycle industry at the time. Norton, however, always known for its innovative approaches to problem-solving, saw the potential immediately and hired the McCandless Brothers on the spot, to work for them exclusively, starting in 1949. Norton commissioned them to design an entirely new frame for their 500cc Manx road racer. It took the Brothers just two months to come up with perhaps the single most important motorcycle frame in the history of motorcycling. There have been a few, very few, and the Featherbed Frame is surely one of them.

The Norton Manx road racer was the first to use a Featherbed Frame.

WHY CALL IT A FEATHERBED?

“THIS RIGID SUSPENSION IS KILLING MY BACK” One of the most influential and important motorcycle frames ever produced for the street was the Norton Featherbed Frame. It came at a time, right after World War 2, when virtually every motorcycle on the market had a rigid frame, that is no rear suspension. Decades later, chopper builders loved them, but back in 1950 all riders could think about were their aching backsides. Most British motorcycles had converted over from girder-style front forks to telescopic forks when civilian production resumed in 1946. But nothing much had been done about the rear suspension. Harley and others mounted enormous, well-padded saddles suspended on springs to help absorb the shock, and it helped, but it clearly wasn’t the long-term answer. Triumph had come up with their bizarre ʻSprung Rear Hubʼ, which was essentially a hub-within-a-hub separated by radially-positioned springs. It provided two inches of vertical travel, but when worn or improperly lubed, they tended to get sloppy, causing sometimes wild and unpredictable handling. The most common approach was a ʻPlunger-type’ rear suspension, which was used by many manufacturers in slightly different forms. This was done to save money, since only slight modification to their ancient rigid frames was required, compared to adopting a swing-arm system. Norton called their plunger system the “Garden Gate” frame. (And you thought Featherbed was a funny name for a motorcycle frame.) Throughout the early postwar years (late-1940s) many things were tried. The 1954 Norton ES2 ʻGarden Gateʼ frame with plunger rear ! ! ! suspension. It’s what came before swing arms.

54

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

First off, why the crazy name? In an era when high-speed road racing was done with no rear suspension, riders would get beat up and fatigued in a long race like the Isle of Man TT. By late 1949, theyʼd mounted the Manx engine and gearbox into the new frame and were conducting testing at the Isle of Man. Their test pilot was Harold Daniell, who had himself won the Isle of Man TT three times. After several laps he came in to the pits, very impressed with the smooth ride, and declared that it was “like riding on a featherbed”. The name stuck.

WHAT MAKES A FEATHERBED FRAME SO SPECIAL? At the time, most motorcycle frames were being built the same way they had since motorcycles began in the very late 1800s, which is the same way bicycle frames were built starting in the 1880s, which is the same way steam engines were built starting in the early 1800s. Heavy cast iron lugs were machined with tight-fitting bores that were heated to expand them, then slipped over the ends of the frame tubes and allowed to cool, before the tubing was bent to shape. These lugs might be an engine mount, a kickstand lug, a bracket, or even the means of joining two frame tubes together. Then, just like soldering the copper pipes on your house, they fluxed these fixtures, then melted brass welding rod into them with a welding torch. These are called ʻbrazed lugsʼ, and they worked well for decades, but are heavy, and not very strong

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

when compared to welded frames. What the McCandless Brothers did was completely eliminate brazed lugs. Theirs was an all-welded steel frame, and one of the first, with all brackets welded on. What this did was reduce weight, make for a much stronger frame, and they looked a lot better also. The design is very interesting, and expensive to build by the standards of the day (thatʼs why most still used brazed lugs; it was cheap). It takes over 40 feet of 16-gauge Reynolds 531 high-tensile manganese-molybdenum steel alloy tubing to make one Featherbed Frame. Using one unbroken length of tubing for each engine cradle tube, each runs from the top of the steering head down under the engine, then up toward the seat (tying in the swing arm bracket), then gently curving forward under the tank, to rejoin the bottom of the steering head. One long, unbroken piece of tubing per side, light, strong, simple. It was so brilliant in its simplicity that Norton was granted a patent for it in 1949. It was complicated and expensive to make, but what a frame! It was light, extremely rigid, and as it turns out, it handled better than anything else on the road or track. THE PROTOTYPE After successful testing, Norton adopted the Featherbed for its factory racing team. But they were still building frames the oldfashioned way and didn’t have the equipment or trained welders to build the all-welded Featherbed Frame. So, the McCandless Brothers took it on and built the 8 prototype racing frames used by Norton in the 1950 season. When Norton took up full production of the Featherbed, they still didn’t do it all themselves. They contracted it out to Ken Sprayson who became known as ʻThe Frame Manʼ. FEATHERBED GOES RACING

twin-cylinder engine out of the Model 7 into the Featherbed Frame creating a whole new bike: The Dominator. Over the years, the “Dommie” grew in displacement and performance, always in the Featherbed Frame, ending with the 1969 Dominator 650SS. In 1962 Norton bored it out again, this time to 750cc and christened it the “Atlas”, also with Featherbed Frame. As displacement and power output rose, and always at higher RPMs, the vibration inherent in parallel twins got so bad that Norton had to start dialing back the performance of its engines. The ultimate answer was the abandonment of the tried-and-true Featherbed Frame, and the adoption of yet another radical new frame design for Norton, dubbed “Isolastic Suspension” in the new 1969 Commando. From that point on, there would be no more Nortons with Featherbed Frames. FEATHERBED LED THE WAY However, the Featherbedʼs legacy was already etched into the annals of motorcycle history. Any Norton with a Featherbed Frame was quite literally the best-handling motorcycle available anywhere at the time. The Featherbed was also the first frame of its kind, all-welded, heavily-braced and cross-braced for stiffness, and thoughtfully triangulated around the steering head to maximize rigidity. Many frame builders, including the Rickman Brothers, (who built dirt bike frames) and most manufacturers learned from and modeled their own frames after the Featherbed. Throughout the late 1950s and all through the 1960s, Norton Dominators and Atlases were among the fastest and best-handling bikes you could buy. They had quite a reputation among the British motorcycle faithful, back then and now.

The Manx 500cc OHC single was always a powerful engine, but it had been limited by its frame and running gear. The Featherbed Frame literally set it free. The road racing victories began to pour in, its first being at the 1950 Manx Grand Prix, at the able hand of Norton factory rider Geoff Duke. More victories quickly followed and continued for over a decade. The Norton Manx with the Featherbed Frame was the premier road racing motorcycle of the 1950s. So good in fact that Norton decided to expand use of the Featherbed across its entire model line. It did much to spark the market for Nortons, as the Featherbed quickly gained a reputation as the best-handling bike in the world.

Triumph engine + Norton frame = Triton WHAT’S A NORLEY?

This ʼ69 Dominator 650SS was the last model to use the Featherbed Frame. FEATHERBED HITS THE STREET The first was the 1953 Norton International, itself a 500cc single, but with the simpler and less expensive OHV instead of the Manx’s OHC setup. Later that same year, they dropped their new 500 THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Triumph, always the sales leader, had many loyal customers who hated losing to Nortons on the racetrack or street, all because of that great-handling Featherbed Frame. Someone came up with the bright idea of putting a Triumph engine in a Norton Featherbed Frame, and calling it a “Triton” (Tri- for Triumph, and -ton for Norton). The engine swap worked out surprisingly well and before long others were copying, building Tritons of their own. This was soon followed by a wave of engine swaps into Featherbed Frames. A BSA engine in the Norton Featherbed Frame was called a “Norbsa”, and a Vincent V-twin engine makes a Norvin. The Featherbed is as flexible as it is lightweight, and has proven to accept nearly any engine, even a Harley Sportster engine yielding a Norley. All done in the interest of lightweight and great handling.

Norton frame + Vincent engine = Norvin FEATHERBED LEGACY The Featherbed Frame introduced the world to the all-welded steel frame, signaled the abandonment of brazed lugs as a frame construction method, and demonstrated how good handling can be. It influenced every new frame that came after it and advanced the science of frame design and manufacture. It inspired other frame designer/builders like the Rickmans and others. Today many modern motorcycles still use frames that owe heavily to the Featherbed. It was indeed the world’s first modern motorcycle frame. New Year = New Me = BS Happy New Year 2018! Have you made all your New Year’s Resolutions? Have you purchased that gym membership, you will undoubtedly not use past 4-6 times? Has your club changed its direction and decided to make things better for it’s membership? I didn’t think so. How often does your club re-visit the direction in which it is headed? Are you still following by-laws written decades ago? Do those bylaws reflect what a modern MC should be? I often wonder how many clubs are still trying to make 30, 40, even 50-year-old guidelines fit into modern times. Where do you draw the line differentiating “customs & protocols” vs. “because we’ve always done it that way”. I know of some clubs who are still suffering “rules”, that some former leader, or the former body of the club voted in 30+ years ago. I know of former MC members with whom some of their club members don’t speak highly of, yet for some reason their club is still giving credence to whatever that membership or leader may have set forth decades ago, even though many don’t agree with it. Why? Why would you allow your current membership to suffer the mistakes of former leaders and or members? This is your time. YOU, the body of YOUR club, in your time to run it. Fix it. I see much written, and I have written as well about “MC protocol”. But MC protocol is really whatever your club decides it is. Isn’t that the purpose for having your own club in the first place? Isn’t that the reason you belong to your club, and not someone else’s? I believe in the “code” when it comes to operating in the MC lifestyle. But to me that means respecting those who return the respect you show. “Protocol” on dealing with other clubs, and your own club is defined by one simple word: respect. I certainly don’t automatically respect any nation solely on the deeds of their former members, or what they might have done 40 years ago. But as so many “pop up” clubs and LE clubs love to hang their hat on, this is the United States of America, and it’s a free nation. I can do what I 60

want. Very true. I certainly cannot deny that as a fact. But just remember, just because you are free to do whatever you want, doesn’t mean you are free of the consequences of doing so. Bylaws are a double edge sword. Why do I want MORE written rules, in a voluntary society that exists primarily because we don’t want to follow the rules of society in general? It’s an Oxymoron. Yet, if you are attempting to keep a group of individual minds on the same track, then there must be some symmetry, or every chapter would be out of control doing their own thing, all while wearing the same patch that’s on your back. That wouldn’t be good for anyone. In the light of the new year, perhaps it is time to dust off that old manuscript, and see if the guidelines that you follow today, are relevant to the club that you are today. I personally know of several

clubs who haven’t looked at their bylaws as a nation in decades. Hell, I know many other club members who haven’t even looked at their bylaws since the day they patched. How can you ever lead your nation, if you have no idea what your founders envisioned? Are you letting some bully ahead of you keep you from knowing your rights as members? Fix it. Like I said, your club belongs to YOU, the body of the membership, not that “one brother” who thinks he’s in charge. Chances are, he won’t even be here in the next generation of your club. Don’t give me that “New Year, New Me” BS… Prove it! Keep it Real! Thanks for reading! My Road Name is Tabasco and I approve this Message. Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Medical Marijuana? Say Goodbye to Your Gun Rights by Dean Rieck House Bill 523, passed on September 8, 2016, legalized medical marijuana in Ohio. The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program will allow residents of the state with certain qualifying conditions, and a recommendation from a physician, to register with the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy for a patient ID card. State agencies are still working on how to administer the program, but medical marijuana patient ID cards will be available no later than September 2018. The question is, how does this affect gun rights in Ohio? The answer seems to be, if you use marijuana, you lose your gun rights regardless of state law. Here’s the problem: while the state has made medical marijuana legal in Ohio, federal law continues to list marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance. That means marijuana users can’t have guns legally. In 2011, BATFE sent a letter to U.S. gun dealers that took a firm stance on the issue:

So according to the BATFE, if you use marijuana, you can’t legally ship, transport, receive or possess firearms or ammunition. Period. State law doesn’t matter. While this seems clear to those who pay close attention to such legal technicalities, it probably won’t be clear to many casual gun owners. Most will only know that marijuana is legal in Ohio, and it will never occur to them that they are violating federal law if they choose to participate in the medical marijuana program. For example, the letter above mentions question 11.e. on ATF Form 4473. This is the form you fill out when you purchase a firearm and it is used to conduct a background check. It asks: Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance? 62 62

U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Washington DC 20226 September 21, 2011 www.atf.gov

OPEN LETTER TO ALL FEDERAL FIREARMS LICENSEES The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has received a number of inquiries regarding the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes1 and its applicability to Federal firearms laws. The purpose of this open letter is to provide guidance on the issue and to assist you, a Federal firearms licensee, in complying with Federal firearms laws and regulations. A number of States have passed legislation allowing under State law the use or possession of marijuana for medicinal purposes, and some of these States issue a card authorizing the holder to use or possess marijuana under State law. During a firearms transaction, a potential transferee may advise you that he or she is a user of medical marijuana, or present a medical marijuana card as identification or proof of residency. As you know, Federal law, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3), prohibits any person who is an “unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance (as defined in section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 802)” from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition. Marijuana is listed in the Controlled Substances Act as a Schedule I controlled substance, and there are no exceptions in Federal law for marijuana purportedly used for medicinal purposes, even if such use is sanctioned by State law. Further, Federal law, 18 U.S.C. § 922(d)(3), makes it unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance. As provided by 27 C.F.R. § 478.11, “an inference of current use may be drawn from evidence of a recent use or possession of a controlled substance or a pattern of use or possession that reasonably covers the present time.” Therefore, any person who uses or is addicted to marijuana, regardless of whether his or her State has passed legislation authorizing marijuana use for medicinal purposes, is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance, and is prohibited by Federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition. Such persons should answer “yes” to question 11.e. on ATF Form 4473 (August 2008), Firearms Transaction Record, and you may not transfer firearms or ammunition to them. Further, if you are aware that the potential transferee is in possession of a card authorizing the possession and use of marijuana under State law, then you have “reasonable cause to believe” that the person is an unlawful user of a controlled substance. As such, you may not transfer firearms or ammunition to the person, even if the person answered “no” to question 11.e. on ATF Form 4473. ATF is committed to assisting you in complying with Federal firearms laws. If you have any questions, please contact ATF’s Firearms Industry Programs Branch at (202) 648-7190. Arthur Herbert Assistant Director Enforcement Programs and Services 1 The Federal government does not recognize marijuana as a medicine. The FDA has determined that marijuana has a high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and lacks an accepted level of safety for use under medical supervision. See 66 Fed. Reg. 20052 (2001). This Open Letter will use the terms “medical use” or “for medical purposes” with the understanding that such use is not sanctioned by the federal agency charged with determining what substances are safe and effective as medicines.

AMERICA’S

BEST FIREARM

VALUE

CARBINE $335 MSRP (9MM RED DOT)

We’re all looking to get the most value from every dollar we spend. Fortunately, value is standard equipment with every Hi-Point purchase. No matter what environment or condition you find yourself in, there’s no comparison to Hi-Point firearms for rugged and reliable service.

CARBINE $335 MSRP (9MM 4X SCOPE)

Whether you’re a varmint hunter, plinker or target shooter, no one else delivers so much solid, reliable performance, for so little. Hi-Point carbines are available in 3 hard-hitting handgun calibers – 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP; and Hi-Point handguns in 4 popular calibers - .380ACP, 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP. Maybe we are bragging, but we truly believe that handsdown, Hi-Point is America’s Best Firearm Value.

You may think that since Ohio has made marijuana legal, you can answer “no.” And if you’re like me, and you fill out this form frequently, you may just quickly check “no” on all the legal questions without reading them. Which means you’ll probably miss the warning that was added to this question earlier this year: Warning: The use or possession of marijuana remains unlawful under Federal law regardless of whether it has been legalized or decriminalized for medicinal or recreational purposes in the state where you reside. From long experience, I know that people don’t read carefully, and a certain number of gun owners are going to provide false information on this form and unknowingly become felons. This exposes you to felony charges under federal law, punishable with prison time and/or a hefty fine.

HANDGUN $151 MSRP (.380ACP)

It’s difficult to predict how the medical marijuana vs. guns issue will play out. In some states, such as Hawaii, enforcement may be strict. According to the Miami Herald, The Honolulu Police Department has been sending letters to legal users of medicinal weed, telling them to surrender their guns within 30 days. However, other states, such as Ohio, may take a softer approach. According to Ohio Board of Pharmacy spokesman Cameron McNamee, only qualified doctors will have access to the Ohio medical marijuana patient registry. Dayton Daily News is reporting that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) won’t include this data.

Regardless, with 29 states and the District of Columbia legalizing medical marijuana, there is bound to be confusion over the issue. And no matter how you may feel about it, the fact remains that Ohio law and federal law conflict. At this time, guns and pot are like oil and water. Legally, they don’t mix. BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT After Sandy Hook: Over 1,300 Teachers Trained to Stop Active Killers COLUMBUS, OH - Five years ago, a 20-year-old murdered his mother, stole her guns, and went to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut to slaughter 6 staff and 20 young children. It was a horrific event that forever changed the concept of what school security means in the modern world. Gun control groups called for new gun laws. However, because none of the proposed laws would have stopped this event, and because new laws have never proven effective at stopping determined killers, one nonprofit organization chose to take a different approach. “I remember an ABC News town hall in Columbus, Ohio,” said Jim Irvine, Chairman of Buckeye Firearms Foundation. “Gun control advocates kept talking about having a socalled ‘national conversation’ about school safety. It was so frustrating because we’d been having a conversation for years and nothing had changed. “So in the middle of the town hall we said we were done talking. It was time for action. We announced a program to train teachers and other school staff to carry guns in schools so they would be ready to stop active killers quickly. There were literally gasps from the audience.” The announcement was met with widespread disbelief and criticism, including editorials claiming that no school would ever participate and no teacher could possibly be interested. But when the organization contacted Ohio schools offering to train 24 teachers, more than 1,000 applied. With support from private donations, that original class grew into what is today called the FASTER Saves Lives program. Created by concerned parents, law 64 64

enforcement, and nationally-recognized safety and medical experts, FASTER Saves Lives is a groundbreaking, nonprofit program that gives educators practical violence response training, including emergency medical care. To date, more than 1,300 teachers and staff from 225 districts across 12 states have received training, including educators in 76 of Ohio’s 88 counties. Up to 400 additional educators are set to go through training in 2018. “After five years, attitudes have changed dramatically,” continued Irvine. “School boards, members of law enforcement, and the media often start off skeptical. But after they attend a class and see for themselves the high quality of instruction and how the program has adapted proven ideas from real world active killer events for the school environment, they realize FASTER Saves Lives is the best and most effective solution available.” According to Irvine, demand for the classes from Ohio schools, and overwhelming interest from other states, greatly exceeds the funding provided by Buckeye Firearms

Foundation. The organization recently received a grant from the State of Ohio for $100,000 per year for 2018 and 2019. Buckeye Firearms Foundation is a 501(c) (3) public charity and serves as the sister organization of Buckeye Firearms Association, a grassroots group dedicated to defending and advancing the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation.

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights.

RECIPES This recipe has several kinds of beans making it more colorful, but its really all about the layers of flavor. It will please almost EVERYONE since each person controls their own heat level with the Sofrito. Plus….and its soooo easy!

Confetti Chili

Serves 6-8 (or 2 hungry bikers)

1 med Onion, diced ½ lb bacon, diced 1 lb ground beef ½ lb ground pork ½ lb ground plain Breakfast sausage (chorizo or hot Italian sausage work great too) (you can use all of one kind of meat if you want but the different kinds gives you layers of flavor) 1-3 pkgs Taco seasoning (depending on taste) 6 cups Chicken stock 1/8 cup lime juice 1 15 oz can diced Tomatoes (I like Hunts fire roasted garlic) 1 15oz can Kidney beans, drained 1 15oz can of black beans, drained 1 15oz can of white beans, drained 1 sm can Tomato paste 3 tbsp Chili powder 2 tbsp Cumin 1/2 tsp Baking soda (optional-helps with the toots) HOT option: 1-2 jalapenos, habaneros, or 2-3 tbsp cayenne pepper (more of less to taste)

Stir in the tomato paste (make sure it mixes in well), chili powder, cumin, and baking soda. Don’t be surprised if the baking soda makes the chili foam (gas) – better here than later lol

Cook over medium-low heat for 1 hour, stirring every 20-30 minutes **If using a slow cooker, transfer into crockpot and stir a couple times.

Check the taste to see if you want more taco seasoning, cumin or chili powder –I use 2 pkgs taco seasoning and a LOT of cumin and chili powder but everyone’s taste is different. I do not add any salt because the taco seasoning is pretty salty by its self.

Cook another 2-3 hour over low heat until beans soften **using crockpot cook on high for 5 hours or on low for about 7 hours – again, until the beans soften.

Remember if your chili begins to stick, and hard to stir, it means it has burned!! Stop the cooking and pour it into another pot (or crockpot) because it can still be saved. DO NOT SCRAPE THE PAN!!! THE BURNT PART WILL POLLUTE THE ENTIRE POT!!! NASTY!

In a large sauce pan, lightly brown onions and bacon. (you can cheat an use packaged real bacon bits and add them at them later)

Add meat and cook for 2 minutes, breaking meat apart to avoid large clumps.

Add 2 cups chicken stock to help breakdown the fat in the meat and further avoid large chunks. (if you like it chunky, just brown the meat).

Stir in 2 pkgs of taco seasoning then add in the rest of the stock and lime juice.

Serve with Fritos, cheese, sour cream, diced onions, avocado, crackers, whatever lights your fire!!!

Next add the diced tomatoes and beans, stir well to combine.

Sofrito

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy

Want it HOTTER, sweeter, deeper flavor…… Try a Sofrito! Its basically a salsa that has been pureed! You BLEND the ingredients together until lightly chunky or smooth. **Remember this is NOT a hot sauce or a salsa, it is a FRESH blend of RAW ingredients to add heat to your chili (or any other Mexican dish) so it will taste RAW – but a little added to a chili it becomes DIVINE. (remember to remove the seeds, it can make your sofrito bitter, and only add a teaspoon or so, this stuff is strong). Play with the flavor until you get what you like, be careful to NOT over salt as your chili will likely have enough

SWEET HOT (don’t knock it till you try it) This is our family favorite and helped my hubby win $1000 chili competition at work ½-1 large onion, chopped ½-1 yellow or orange bell pepper 1-2 habanero or red jalapeno pepper, seeds removed 1 can of pears, peaches (hubby’s fav), any soft fruit, canned in syrup (citrus is better fresh) ¼ - ½ minced garlic 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp ground red pepper ½ tsp chili powder Salt and pepper to taste ½ tomato – optional Blend everything, adding a little syrup to make it smooth or until it’s the right hot-sweet you want.

DEAD RED (LOL) This is a little hotter but still great flavor ½-1 large onion, chopped ½-1 red bell pepper 1-2 red cayenne pepper, seeds removed 1-2 habanero or red jalapeno pepper, seeds removed 1 tsp liquid cayenne (Zatarans liquid crab boil) ¼ - ½ tsp minced garlic 2 tbsp white vinegar 1 tsp ground red pepper ½ tsp chili powder Salt and pepper to taste ½ tomato – optional Blend everything, adding a little water as needed to make it smooth

MOMMA’S MEAN GREEN – this one will hurt you, no matter how much you like hot stuff! The heat tends to sneak up on the back side and last a while! ½-1 large onion, chopped ½-1 green bell pepper 4 green jalapeno peppers, seeds removed 2 serrano peppers, seeds removed 2 scotch bonnets or habaneros, seeds removed 1 poblano (ancho) pepper, seeds removed 1 anaheim pepper, seeds removed (you can use any hot green pepper you like, HOT being the key word) 3-4 tbsp liquid cayenne (Zatarans liquid crab boil) ¼ - ½ tsp minced garlic 2 tbsp white vinegar 1 tsp ground red pepper ½ tsp chili powder salt and pepper to taste ½ tomato – optional Blend everything until evil and smooth

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

It was George the Mailman’s last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same neighborhood. When he arrived at the first house on his route, he was greeted by the whole family who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a tidy gift envelope. At the second house, they presented him with a box of fine cigars. The folks at the third house handed him a selection of terrific fishing lures. At the fourth house, he was met at the door by a strikingly beautiful woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, gently led him through the door, which she closed behind him, and took him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced. When he had enough, they went downstairs and she fixed him a giant breakfast: eggs, potatoes, ham, sausage, blueberry waffles, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. When he was truly satisfied, she poured him a cup of steaming coffee. As she was pouring, he noticed a dollar bill sticking out from under the cup’s bottom edge. “All this was just too wonderful for words,” he said, “But what’s the dollar for?” “Well,” she said, “Last night, I told my husband that today would be your last day, and that we should do something special for you. I asked him what to give you. He said, ‘Screw him. Give him a dollar.’

Motorcycle rider pulls into a diner in upstate N.Y. Seats himself and asks the waitress for 2 headlights and 2 wheels. The waitress, who had worked all night & wasn’t in a good mood, said “what are you talking about?” The rider already tired, but happy to relax at the diner said ”Just tell the cook, he’ll know what I mean by the expression 2 headlights and 2 wheels.” By this time the waitress is pissed and yells back at the old cook, “I got this weird one out here who thinks you’ll know what he wants if he orders 2 headlights and 2 wheels”. “Yeah I know what he wants” says the cook, “He wants 2 eggs sunny side up and 2 pancakes. No problem.” Well this just pisses off the waitress even more than before. So, just before the food is served to the rider, she walks up with a big plate of chili beans and slams them down on the table. “Here” she yells for all to hear, “Here’s your chili!” But, the rider who didn’t order the chili answers back, “What is this for?” The waitress is ready for this and yells back, “I thought you would want to gas up before you took off!”

While her husband was at work, a blonde decided to paint their living room. After her husband arrives home, he finds his wife lying on the floor in a pool of sweat while wearing a parka and a jacket. He asked her what she was doing. She said, “I wanted to prove to you that not all blonde women are dumb, and I wanted to do it by painting the living room.” He says that he was impressed at the good job she had done, but asked, “Why are you wearing two coats?” She replied, “I read the directions on the paint can, and they said, ‘’For best results, put on two coats!” A police officer pulled over two nuns riding on a motorcycle, and said to the rider, ‘Ma’am, you’re driving much too slowly, could you please drive faster?” And the nun says, ‘Oh, I saw the sign with the “21” and assumed the speed limit was 21 km/h” The officer explains: ‘No ma’am, the speed limit is 80. The highway number is Interstate 21.” Then the police officer look at the passenger and see the other nun shaking like a leaf.

A gorilla walks into a bar and says, “A scotch on the rocks, please.” The gorilla hands the bartender a $10 bill.

“Excuse me sister, but what’s wrong with your passenger?”

The bartender thinks to himself, “This gorilla doesn’t know the prices of drinks,” and gives him 15 cents change.

“Oh, that’s probably because we just got off Highway 205.”

The bartender says, “You know, we don’t get too many gorillas in here.”

Why Motorcycles are better than women: Your motorcycle doesn’t get mad when you ignore it for a month or so.

The gorilla replies, “Well, at $9.85 a drink, I ain’t coming back, either.”

You don’t have to talk to your motorcycle after you ride it.
