FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s the midst of the riding season and things are happening all over the state, and as Ohio’s Motorcycle Magazine – we are covering a lot of them right here in the pages of Thunder Roads Ohio! Everything from Bike Nights to Poker Runs, from Rallies to TRO Bike Shows – they are all here! As mentioned before, we are trying to cover a more and more diverse blend of events and motorcycles in our magazine and as we ride all over the state. Increasingly, people are asking us “Aren’t you a Harley Mag?” Sure, I ride a Harley (Road Glide or Softail Heritage), but I also enjoy trail riding and letting loose with something a bit “sportier” from time to time. As much as I enjoy my RG, sometimes I like to change things up a bit. As a rider – or as in life in general, I’d encourage all of you to change things up a little and try something new from time to time. As a rider, that might mean trying some new ride stops or exploring a new portion of the state. It might mean getting out and seeing what flat track racing or motocross is all about. It might mean heading out to a local demo event and trying a brand or style of bike that you’ve never tried before. Or maybe throwing a bag on the bike and heading out and camping at a rally – even if you’ve never done that before. I enjoy living life and experiencing new things. Sometimes I discover something new that I really enjoy – and sometimes I get a life lesson or greater appreciation for some of the staples in my life. Either way, I’m the wiser and I’ve grown in some way. One of the most “diverse” events of the entire year is AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days – which falls on July 7-9 this year. (See page 12) I can’t imagine any motorcycle event which packs a more diverse range of 2 wheeled activities into a single weekend. Virtually every make and model of motorcycle ever made is represented at Vintage Days between the racing, the swap meet, and the bikes ridden by the thousands attending. It’s really an incredible event that leaves you with a far greater appreciation for our sport and all it encompasses. Motocross, flat track racing, road riding, modern and vintage bikes – it’s all at “Vintage Days”. If you’ve never been, I’d really encourage you to attend. Even if you’ve been riding for years and think you’ve seen it all, I promise you that you’ll see something new. You might even ride it home! And how cool would that be? If I don’t see you at Vintage Days or any of the other countless events featured here in the mag, I wish you safe travels and new experiences!

AIMExpo Welcomes Harley-Davidson & Indian to Columbus Show

Public Debut of 2018 Models, Demo Rides and More to Headline First Year Attendance The American International Motorcycle Expo presented by Nationwide (AIMExpo) will welcome both the Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) and Polaris Motorcycle Division (PMD) to the 2017 show floor for their first time. Harley-Davidson will kick off its inaugural appearance with its new 2018 models this September 2124. Interactive demo rides and its JUMPSTART™ Rider Experience will also be available to attendees when the fifth-annual event gets underway from the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Ohio. As the annual nexus for the motorcycle and powersports industry in the world’s largest recreational market, the Motorcycle Industry Council produced AIMExpo presented by Nationwide provides a key stage for Harley-Davidson to share both its new 2018 models and its vision for creating the next generation of riders. Recently, Harley-Davidson unveiled key long-term objectives that include building two million new riders over the next ten years in the U.S., as well as launching 100 high-impact motorcycles during the same window through 2027. “AIMExpo offers a unique and timely opportunity for Harley-Davidson to share our new high-impact 2018

models with consumers, media and the broader industry, in one place at one time,” said Anoop Prakash, Harley-Davidson U.S. Marketing Director. “We look forward to presenting both new and seasoned riders an opportunity to test ride our exciting 2018 line-up in Columbus, Ohio, as we pursue our objectives to grow ridership across the United States.” As part of its effort to attract new riders to the sport of motorcycling, the Harley-Davidson JUMPSTART Rider Experience combines a HarleyDavidson motorcycle and a specially designed, stationary support stand to welcome first-time riders to the world of motorcycling. Attendees will also have the chance to take a new Harley-Davidson out on the open road with demo rides available at AIMExpo Outdoors!. “The addition of the iconic American brand Harley-Davidson very much completes the grand stage that AIMExpo presented by Nationwide represents for American industry in a global setting,” Mike Webster, Sr VP MIC Events. “The history and innovation of motorcycling in America will be very well represented this September in Columbus with HarleyDavidson, the longest continually manufactured domestic brand, and we’re genuinely excited to honor the past while looking to the future as they join the industry on the show floor and at AIMExpo Outdoors!.“

Indian and Slingshot to Debut in Columbus

Polaris Motorcycle Division plans to showcase its 2018 lineup from its Indian Motorcycles and Polaris Slingshot brands. PMD joins a broad expanse of industry at the Motorcycle Industry Council produced event that serves as the annual gathering of Powersports USA this September 21-24 when the fifth-annual event kicks off from its all-new location at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Unlike any other show in North America, AIMExpo presented by Nationwide will offer PMD an opportunity to interact with press, dealers, and consumers all at one place and one time. With Indian, the first American motorcycle company, and Polaris Slingshot, the bold three-wheeled roadster, taking center stage at AIMExpo presented by Nationwide, the company will look to take full advantage of the event, especially as an American manufacturer in its home market. “The show’s platform was created to shine a spotlight on American industry as well as the world’s largest recreational powersports market, and we’re ecstatic to welcome America’s first motorcycle company, Indian, along with the uniquely American Slingshot product line from the Polaris Motorcycle Division,” said Larry Little, Vice President & General Manager, MIC Events. “The broad spectrum of American ingenuity will be on full display from the modern homage to a heritage brand to the pure performance of a product that’s created its own category, and will be appreciated by visitors from the media, trade and consumer audiences.” “The Polaris Motorcycle Division is pleased to join the Motorcycle Industry Council event that has created a world stage for American produced products,” said Steve Menneto, President, Polaris Motorcycle Division. “We’re looking forward to hosting dealers and consumers in Columbus this September.” Along with the Milwaukee-based manufacturer, 41% of powersports dealers and 50% of the US population reside within 500 miles of AIMExpo presented by Nationwide’s new location in the city of Columbus. This central location and ease of access offer all attendees the opportunity to engage with the motorcycle and greater powersports industry like never before. Stay tuned to the AIMExpoUSA.com website and keep up to date on exciting news as it happens by visiting AIMExpo’s social media pages. “Like” American International Motorcycle Expo presented by Nationwide on Facebook, and “Follow” on Twitter or Instagram: @AIMExpo. OHIO BIKE WEEK

BECOME A TRO PHOTOGRAPHER

While there are Bike Blessings and occasional Bike Nights in May (if they aren’t rained out), Ohio Bike Week is certainly the KICK OFF to riding season in our state for most. Riders from all across Ohio make the pilgrimage to the North Coast for a chance to join in the festivities. For 2017, the OBW organizers presented a full schedule of concerts, rides, parties, and two wheeled craziness – and once again TRO not only presented the schedule in our Rally Guides, we helped host some of the parties!

If you’ve ever taken a picture with your camera or even phone at an event and thought – “wow, that’s pretty cool.” Or felt like you wanted to share some of your photos with others – more than simply on Facebook. If you take pride in some of the pictures you’ve taken and have a love of the motorcycle community. We’d like to invite you to become a Photographer for TRO. One of the endless challenges that we face at Thunder Roads is attempting to cover all the events and share them with our readers – both in the pages of the magazine and online. Our primary means of doing so is by capturing as many images as possible which we then present as a means of capturing the essence of the event – both for those that were there and want to remember it and for those unable to attend. The challenge lies in the fact that even if we are just talking away, there are often countless events and rides going on every weekend throughout the summer. There are rallies, rides, bike nights, bike shows, and races almost every weekend – and we couldn’t possibly cover them all. We do, though, try to get out to as many as we can – and often times that involves us working with local contributors. And that’s where you can come in. As a Thunder Roads Ohio / Iron Cowboy Photographer you’ll be able to submit photos for both the magazine and our online sites of events within your area. You can take pictures of motorcycles, riders, and popular ride stops in your home town or wherever you ride to. As a Contributor, you aren’t “paid” for the photos – however, there are perks that come with the effort in terms of the events and access you’ll have. After you’ve established yourself as a TRO Contributor – we provide additional materials such as Credentials, special

The State Rally ROCKS – Once Again!

Jackie S, 2017 OBW Calendar Contest Winner!

If you go online, you’ll find several THOUSAND photos of the Rally on our facebook page (www.facebook.com/ ThunderRoadsOhio) and we’d encourage you to go through a tag yourself or friends in as many as pics as you recognize. Thanks to numerous contributors and staff photographers covering the rally – we have pictures of almost everything!

We’ve decided, though, to spread out the coverage in the magazine itself. Rather than simply running a few pages in this month’s magazine, we’ve decided to take more time (and space) to present a lot more of the #1 Rally in the Midwest over the next several months. In fact, we expect to be running photo galleries of this year’s rally right up until next years! We think that makes a lot more sense and is more fun than simply trying to convey the rally in 20-30, or maybe even 50 photos in a single issue. It’s OHIO’S RALLY and we are OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE – it only makes sense that we feature coverage year-round!

TRO FEATURE EVENT

7th Annual BRIAN DULLE Memorial Ride Saturday, July 22, 2017 The benefit ride is held each year in honor of Warren County Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Brian Dulle, who was killed in the line of duty on May 10, 2011. Sgt. Dulle is survived by his wife and three young children - one of which is the namesake of a non-profit group called Maddie’s Hope, which raises money for cancer research. Hosted by Powder Keg HarleyDavidson in partnership with the Iron Shields LE MC Georgetown Chapter, the ride drew more than 500 riders in 2016 and is one of the largest in the region. Ride registration opens at 8am and runs until 9:30, when there is a pre-departure meeting for riders. The Ride leaves at 10am sharp and is escorted out to Cowan Lake State Park. When everyone returns to Powder Keg, there is an afternoon of live music and festivities – all benefiting three specially designated charities. The first is Maddie’s Hope – named in honor of Sgt. Dulle’s daughter, secondly, the Brian Dulle Scholarship Fund, and last but not least, Mourning Stripe, which helps support the families of officers killed or injured in the line of duty. No administrative fees are deducted from the proceeds – with everything going to these worth causes.

SAFETY REPORT

Mike Stock Safety and Education Director 419-654-5446 mikestock419@gmail.com

Hi Friends, Hope everyone is having a great riding season. As I’m writing this article we are working Ohio Bike Week and the weather has been great. I think the overall bike count is down a little but everyone is having a great time. They have a new sign around town that says “We kindly ask… When in Town Please Throttle Down! Help Keep OHIO BIKE WEEK in Sandusky” I hope everyone heeded the warning. It is a great time and a great area to ride. For the most part everyone is riding safe here at Ohio Bike Week and this means a lot on keeping an event alive. The stats for us this year are settling down. In 2016 we had 1,137 crashes and 35 fatalities as of the first of June. Now in 2017 we have 911 crashes and 23 fatalities. This is looking good compared to the way we started the year. Crashes involving injuries are down over 200. This says that we still have the crashes but not every crash is sending someone to the hospital. Road conditions have a lot to do with crashes. A rough surface can cause loss of control resulting in a crash. In Northwest Ohio we have a lot of potholes and orange barrels. These lead to uneven road surfaces so we need to slow down. A lot of cages can get through at a faster speed but bikers may need to maneuver more to be safe. So when planning a trip, check for road construction and avoid it if possible. Think ahead, give yourself plenty of space and slow down.

Motorcycle Ohio is hard at work training riders. If you have never taken a riding class, make some time and take a class. You will learn a lot. If you are an experienced rider they do have a one day class that will sharpen your skills. And for those of you that have been riding on a temporary permit every year, you can take a one day class and get your endorsement. Please check in with Motorcycle Ohio and get trained and always ride SMART (ride Sober, ride Motorcycle endorsed, ride Alert, ride with the Right gear and ride Trained). I always like to remind everyone to check out your bike before every ride and take a good check every week. Before every ride look at tires, look for oil, any loose or hanging parts and then at start up listen for any unusual sounds. Every week check tire pressure, tire condition, lights, brakes, oil levels and general condition of bike. And most important when you have your oil and filter changed always check your bike over very well. In the shop manual and some owner manuals they give you a check list for different mileages and times. This will help a lot. Last and very important, you should have some tools with you: combination screw driver, hex keys, torx keys, pliers, adjustable wrenches and a bag to keep them in. A good way to see if you have the right tools - start by going to the battery and check the battery terminal for tightness and check to see if you can change a turn signal bulb.

It is July and I hope many of you are reading this @ the Region 8 Freedom Rally in Carrollton, Ohio. I know I am, It is wonderful spending this weekend with a whole bunch of quality people on the same mission as I am; that is to facilitate Motorcycle Awareness and Safety also to Preserve and Improve the Motorcycling experience here in the Great State of Ohio. With the Ohio Legislature enjoying their summer recess, now is a good time to stop by your Local Elected Officials Home Office and visit with them and review our Legislative Agenda with them for the 132nd General Assembly.

we need Volunteers to help staff it, July 15th, R 6 S.L.U.T. Run, Piqua, Ohio, this is a good one, check it out. Next on the hit list is the Wauseon National, July 21-23, R 4 and the ABATE of Ohio Foundation have booths in there and could use some help staffing them and a great place to see some excellent vintage motorcycle racing and shop for some vintage motorcycle parts. Did you say parts? Well last weekend of the month is the 31st Annual Wetzelland Bash, parts, bike games, entertainment and vendors galore, this is one of my favorites each year and many Thanks to our Brothers and Sisters and all of the Members of the Wetzel M.C. for sponsoring us again this year.

COB CORNER

The July riding calendar is really hopping, first weekend as I mentioned above is our R 8 Freedom Rally, next is the R 7 Lights of Freedom Ride Wednesday July 5, Sandusky, Ohio, July 7-9 the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, in Lexington, Ohio, the State Products Trailer will be on site for the entire Event and 16 16

On a regular basis I like to support the local AMA sanctioned clubs in the area. These clubs have been around for a long time and need our help. In return they do charity work for us. When these runs are sanctioned that means they have the AMA backing and insurance. That keeps you covered on the runs. So many unsanctioned runs have NO liability insurance. All ABATE of Ohio runs are sanctioned by the AMA and are insured to keep you covered while on the run. I have been working with my local Safe Communities. These county-wide organizations are set up by the State of Ohio and they are granted money to help communities run safety programs. Part of this grant money is specified for a motorcycle awareness program. I go, so I know the motorcycle community gets the most out of that money. At the same time I work with local police, sheriff departments and state patrol officers. I have learned about Distracted Driving, Drunk Driving and Drugged Driving. So we as Motorcyclists can get involved. With our presence we can make a difference. ABATE of Ohio is promoting “The Year of the Member”. We want every motorcyclist to be a member of a Rights Organization. We offer two for one memberships for $20.00, two friends $20.00 or $10.00 each if you like. You can go online and sign up at ABATE.com, call the office at 614-319-3644, go to an ABATE event and sign up or just find a member. We all carry applications. Remember, freedom is not free. THE ROAD TO MOTOAMERICA - Part three of a series Club racing is where TEAM DIETZ cut their teeth.

Jumping from Club Racing to a series like MotoAmerica is no small task. Reaching this decision took considerable time and thought and according to big Tim around 4 years ago, they started thinking about what was next for Team Dietz. AMA racing was in trouble, but soon it looked like Pro Racing in the U.S. may get some help, and then MotoAmerica emerged. Tim started reading and researching what they needed to do to get 3 MotoAmerica licenses.

At the time of this publishing Steven has, in addition to Road Atlanta, since competed at Virginia Int’l Raceway (VIR) in May and most recently competed in Road America near Elkhart Lake, WI in the beginning of June. It has certainly been a learning curve. At just 18 years old he is running with some of the best. Previously, other than a non-race outing one rainy day at Road Atlanta, Steven had never put a wheel on the pavement at VIR or Road America. Steven improves with every outing.

The realization came that, “what you race is what you are”. Almost none of the Twin Suberbike racing accomplishments made with Team Dietz were recognized by MotoAmerica. Almost none. With the older 2 in college and not having enough free time to compete, Tim came up with a plan for Steven. He wanted to compete in the 600 Superstock Series. As a team, they planned races and Steven chased points to qualify for a Pro Race license.

It is still a team effort--a family effort. Brothers Timothy and Eric, along with Dad are there to crew and wrench. Mom Darci is the glue that holds things together.

Steven was off to his first Pro Race at Road Atlanta with MotoAmerica in April. Dad reminded him he was not a Pro-Racer yet-- not until he got on that track and competed in his very first Pro Race.

Also Motorcycle Road Racing is back at Nelsons Ledges Road Course. LEAN Track days will hold a two- day track day event July 22-23. For more details and registration go to http:/leantd.com

The road to MotoAmerica continues. More next month. As always safe riding to all, Denise Kennedy

CMA No Place For Anger I’m sure your riding season has started out much like mine, with a flurry of events on the calendar. Two weekends ago I was working an event to help park bikes. The area selected by the vendor for parking bikes was much too small for the volume of bikes wanting to be parked. Other area vendors wanted their parking lots for what they were designed for – their customers. Although the promoter had secured other locations for “overflow” bike parking this location was the closest and most convenient of the four. Naturally all the bikers wanted to park here, but what is one to do when it is full? We gave the bikers directions to the other parking areas but they were not satisfied. Attempts were made to go around the entrance and some even removed barricades which outlined this parking area so they could park as they pleased. We were doing our best to keep isles around all the rows of bikes to prevent anyone from being “blocked in” when any of them wanted to leave; but, as bikers entered on their own – you guessed it – they parked as they pleased. Personally I was becoming very aggravated and was ready to share a piece of my mind with some of those bikers, but, I was reminded of Philippians 2:12-16, “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence

only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. 14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing; 15 so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.” NASB Paul is writing here to the Christians in Philippi but it is very applicable to all Christians even today. See, my desire was to have a Christian influence on someone attending this event for the cause of Christ. If I became belligerent toward the bikers wanting to park in a full parking area, as they were with me, I just might lose my ability to minister to them later. So did I put on a “Happy” face? No. But I did channel my anger from my voice and yet I spoke clearly and concisely so bikers knew our situation and they knew their options. Oh, I also repositioned myself so those who were trying to go around the entrance couldn’t. In the end we got through the event without any situations and we were able to pray with some folks later on. All thanks to the Holy Spirit ministering to me first. GR (Jerry) Niver

PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer, we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride! The Way it Works: STARTING IN MAY, Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a rider has registered at the stop - their card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-ins randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.

NEW FOR 2017: RIDERS CAN CHECK-IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-INs AND INSTANT PRIZES! FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS. And it’s SIMPLE – 1. 2. 3. 4.

TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AND CHECK IN AT YOUR LOCATION. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #ThunderRoadsOH It’s that simple.

Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes, but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea, to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

State and Stop Prizes: Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the checkins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners: If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize, they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-ins. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-ins season long. • ALL CHECK-INs remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

For 2017, Thunder Run riders have the chance to win 6 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts, some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes!

BONUS Check-ins! The 2017 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over however, you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have a special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a way for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.

We want to keep things exciting for you, our readers as riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. 24

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

For 2017, there will be even more emphasis on Event Ride Stops. Rides, Rallies, Bike Nights, and Bike Shows will all be Ride Stops where you can check in to WIN! We will be adding a lot more Bike Night stops all across the state for more mid-week rides.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors, Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run but there are undoubtedly plenty more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else, we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. Please send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.

The RIDE kicks off MAY 10, 2017!

Some folks may sneak you in early, but please understand that we give a little time for people to get set up and everyone on the same page.

As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

NEW FOR 2017 - SOCIAL MEDIA CHECK-IN’s Here’s how it works – At designated stops all across the state (see list on the following pages) there are RIDE STOP signs posted. When you see one of those, you can take a “selfie” of yourself in front of the sign with your card in your hand. You then “check into” the location with your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts and post the picture with the hashtag #ThunderRoadsOH It’s really that simple. If the staff at the location is busy, unavailable, or the place is even closed. You can take a picture and post with your card. We use the card to identify you – so please have the number visible. If we aren’t able to read the number we may not be able to notify you if you win. Also – if we can’t see the sign or easily identify your location, it will also be difficult to validate your win. Your best bet is to “check-in” at the location with your posting, and get a picture in front of the sign. It may sound complicated, but it’s really not. You will find that this is far easier and far faster in most cases. For those of you that don’t have smart phones, facebook, Instagram, twitter – or simply the patience to deal with all this. You’re welcome to still use the clipboard, which all locations also still have. Also – just a reminder that any location where we are set-up is also a Ride Stop. So, if you see our tents or the TRO Trailers someplace – you can pose in front and check-in! It’s that easy!

2017 Thunder Roads Ohio Championship Bike Show Series Bring out your bikes and show off what you’ve done! As motorcyclists, bikers, or whatever you want to call yourselves – our bikes are often our pride and joy. In many cases, We spend hours after hours, and often dollar after dollar making them our own personal ride. With all that time and effort, why not bring them out and showcase what you’ve done? To that end, we present the Thunder Roads Ohio Bike Show Series. The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are encouraged to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals – they are all welcome to the show. Each bike show is also a qualifier for our Championship Shows – both the State Show and the National Championship Show which has been held as part of the I-X Piston Power Show the last several years.

DEYARMIN BEST OF SHOW

The vast majority of these shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include the “people’s choice” as well as a professional eye – preventing it just being a popularity contest. Some shows, though, are Judged Shows – with the guest votes simply going towards the People’s Choice Awards. All Thunder Roads Shows feature trophies and placards to recognize the bikes and winners, with special prizes being added in some shows in consideration of the location and hosts. The Best of Show Bikes and TOP Class Winners from the Bike Show Series are then invited to take part in the Championship Shows. 40

Special Shows Notes – Saturday, July 16 Erie Bikefest Bike Show, IMBBA Judged Show This special Rally Show is International Master Bike Builder Association (IMBBA) judged, qualifies bikes for the National Championship and has over $10,000 in prizes! The IMBBA Judges score each bike against a set of established industry standards and you’re able to get an objective review of your bike. The IMBBA includes some of the most well respected and recognizable names in the industry and in many cases these are the folks that have helped define the custom motorcycle concept as we know it. “All of the IMBBA judges strictly adhere to a straight-forward set of published guidelines used to award points and all IMBBA judges go through a training apprenticeship, judging bikes alongside founding President and Chief Judge, Jeff Starke. The judges use trade standards to award points that define the bike’s Fit, Form, Function & Safety.” These shows are a bit more serious, but still welcome bikers and enthusiasts of all levels! It may seem intimidating to put your bike up for serious scrutiny, but you are the only one that will review the score and what the judges find. And it’s a chance to have a real professional to both point out opportunities and recognize the work you’ve done. In most cases, entry in an IMBBA show includes membership and you can earn points towards IMBBA Certification. If you’re a professional or even just an enthusiast, having that IMBBA Seal on your door or card in your wallet separates you out from the countless hacks out there. It also validates that you are a PROFESSIONAL – or building to that level. Rick Fairless, Billy Lane, Arlen Ness and countless others are IMBBA recognized Master Builders, so you’ll find yourself in good company.

CUSTOM PAINT! All shows this year include a CUSTOM PAINT class for bikes to be considered under. You can enter your bike in just this category – or you can add it as a second classification. There is a discounted fee for adding the second category. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

RIDING TIPS FROM THE PROS Hot / Dry Weather

by ProRider Cleveland

During the hot summers, more vehicles tend to overheat, so be extremely attentive to pavement conditions when approaching turns and stops. Many accidents leave vehicle fluids (like anti-freeze, oil, and transmission fluid) usually in the middle of intersections. Also, as the temperature increases, the tar strips that are used to seal the roads become as slippery as ice.

Wet Weather Give yourself additional braking distance on wet pavement, this will allow you to apply lighter brake pressure than you would in dry conditions. Be extremely mindful of tar strips, painted street markings, and manhole covers, avoid any turning while on top of these if possible. Accelerating also suffers from the same lack of traction that braking does in the rain, so slow, smooth acceleration is needed.

Tar Snakes are EVERYWHERE!

Check Equipment before you ride

Check mirrors, all lights, horn, brakes, clutch, tire condition, and tire pressure before you leave on a ride.

Stay Off Front Brake at Slow Speed Whether or not you’re walking your bike out of the garage or pulling into a parking spot, the front brake will put you and your ride on the ground without remorse.

Ride Defensively Continuously scan your environment, watch other drivers heads and mirrors, expect them to change lanes to where they are looking even if they do not use their mirrors or signals. Look past the vehicle in front of you for emergency braking situations, do not count on the distracted driver in front of you. Stay to the left or right side of the lane to provide yourself with an avenue of escape in case of an emergency braking situation, whether it is from the vehicle in front or the vehicle coming up from behind. Do not pass vehicles as you exit freeways or get into turning lanes, expect that vehicle to move suddenly over without looking. On approaching a vehicle getting ready to make a left turn be ready to stop or make evasive maneuvers to avoid an accident, do not ever assume they see you.

Keep your controls covered Cover brake and clutch at all times. Do not get caught at a stop with both feet on the ground and bike in neutral and a distracted vehicle screeching up behind you. Having the controls covered will give you the immediate ability to make the evasive maneuvers to save yourself.

Wear the right gear At a minimum, a DOT approved helmet, full finger gloves, proper eyewear, over the ankle boots, and durable long pants that will protect you from road debris and bugs; leave the shorts and sandals for the beach.

FROM ACROSS THE POND “Visit with Larry Kalal, owner of BCF Cycles”

For this month’s British Bike Feature – we thought that we would visit with Larry Kalal, owner of BCF Cycles. BCF is located in Kirtland, Ohio – just east of Cleveland, and is dedicated to British and European motorcycles.

So what’s the appeal of vintage British motorcycles? Why do they have such a following? There is so much to be said about British Motorcycles and the type of rider! As far as the American history of it I think a good place to start would be World War Two. This isn’t where the first appearance of British Motorcycles were but it’s a favorite of mine to talk about. Some of the British Motorcycles that were issued to the troops that helped win the war were, Triumph, Norton & BSA. These motorcycles became more than just a tool while winning the war in Europe. When the troops came home they wanted these bikes here. This made the British Motorcycle boom in America. During this boom Americans did everything from getting enthusiastic about riding, evolving into different types of sport racing bikes, even chopping motorcycles up and turning them into fast, desirable works of moving art. These bikes signify more than what the average rider wants. They embody a history and a culture that wouldn’t fit into any mold. Even Triumph wouldn’t change their standards in the 1970’s because they felt that they were engineering quality motorcycles for almost 100 years. The workers at Triumph locked the doors and

48

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

wouldn’t leave when they were trying to close up the factory. The dedication and unique craftsmanship of each and every Motorcycle is to its own. No two are alike. You can open seven crates of untouched 1967 Bonnevilles and assemble all of them, they will each be different. From nuts and bolts to paint. The parts books can even be confusing to a novice mechanic because with all the modifications sometimes these books were not updated. The demand for these well crafted motorcycles left the assembly line using whatever was available to fit the order. In 1963 the unit motor was introduced. The unit motor had the engine, clutch, and transmission in one set of motor cases. Those are the more common barn finds. Many Triumph and BSA parts were interchangeable; such as clutch plates, carbs, brake plates and fork legs. Triumph purchased BSA to try and keep them alive in the declining years of the British Motorcycle industry. Triumph finally closed its doors in 1983 and did not return to the industry until the early to mid 1990’s. The last year for BSA was 1972 with their “Oil In Frame” bikes. The last year for Norton was 1975 with their one year only electric start commando model. There are so many other British Motorcycle brands from years past like Matchless, AJS, Vincent, Royal Enfield, James, Ariel, and the list goes on. We see these motorcycles in the shop too. Many of these companies never made it through the 1960’s.

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

BCF started in 2000 in a small garage with two people and one lift. It now has five lifts, a showroom with vintage style apparel, a giant upstairs office, and a small staff that’s like family. Over the years we have acquired inventory from many old cycle shops that were closing up. If you walked in on any given day you would think it’s 1964. One of my favorite things to do is take an old bike that has been sitting for 40 years and bring it back to life. Those are the moments that make my week. That’s what makes the shop.

The thing that attracts a rider to a British Motorcycle isn’t that you go pick one out and ride it. It’s that, that Motorcycle itself speaks to you. People regularly ask me, “ What got you into fixing British Motorcycles?” My response is, “ I bought one.” Just like my motorcycle, they speak to you. In 1993 I bought my first Triumph for $1,300. It was a 1967 Triumph Bonneville chopper and I still ride it today. When you are 19 years old $1,300 might as well be $20,000 The moment I saw it I knew it was the bike for me. So I made my bi-weekly payments and sweated it out and paid it off. Since then I have made many modifications. I have done face lifts and different motor modifications to it. For a while there I even ran 11/1 pistons and racing fuel. To this day my Triumph is still my trusty daily rider. Just like me, the riders of these Motorcycles don’t fit into any mold. People who enjoy these bikes generally are not looking to go bar hopping. They don’t want a GPS option on their bike because they don’t care. These riders want to kick start their bike and go. They want the freedom from technology and stereo systems. They want to ride. From the top of the line racing ability of the Triumph in its day to the distinguished ride of the punchy 750 Norton Commando, these riders have been up to 89 years old in the shop and kicking over their bike happily. They come from all walks of life. Some of the most passionate clients we have are in their 70’s and 80’s, or their 20’s and 30’s. You have people who are purists with their piece of history and want everything to stay the same. You also have people who want the upgrades to make the bike a daily rider. You have men who are in their 50’s and 60’s who are still hitting the race track. You also have orthopedic surgeons who want the surgical steel incorporated into their build.

FROM ACROSS THE POND “Visit with Larry Kalal, owner of BCF Cycles”

Any tips for someone looking to purchase a vintage British motorcycle? When someone is looking to purchase a British Motorcycle what are some things to look for? What to look for in value with these Motorcycles? Make sure you have mated engine halves with matching numbers on both sides of the engine cases. Watch out for bad stamping. This was a common practice in the 60’s when Motorcycles were getting stolen regularly. You also want to make sure that these numbers match your frame. The third step is you want there to be a title, that also has the same matching numbers. This is how you get a matching numbers bike. A few common things you will wanna upgrade are the ignition system, charging system, and the carbs. These will help you with having a one kick bike that can be ridden regularly, even in Ohio. These bikes don’t like to sit. They are happiest in the RPM’s. BCF Larry Kalal 7913 Euclid Chardon Rd, Kirtland, OH 44094 bcfcycle@yahoo.com (440) 256-4149

As Featured by RETURN OF THE CAFÉ RACERS Geoff Baldwin, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor Sometimes you have your sights set so firmly on what lies ahead you forget to take a look back and appreciate the past. As you can imagine I’ve featured tons of cafe racers over the course of our website’s 10+ year lifespan, so I thought it would be worth taking a look back at some of the best.

60

What better place to start than with Honda’s legendary CB750, the ‘world’s first superbike’ and a hot favorite in the cafe scene for many years. So, here’s the Return of the Cafe Racers Top 5 Honda CB750 cafe racers. These are the 5 custom CB750s that everyone has been talking, sharing, tweeting and commenting about the most since they were first published on these pages. When I started pulling this list together I was expecting to get a fairly balanced bunch of bikes. By this, I mean a group of custom motorcycles

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

that bear a resemblance to one another. As you’ll see from the list this certainly wasn’t the case. Why? To be completely honest this has me stumped, but it’s also rather pleasing. To me, customizing bikes is all about originality and if I’d ended up with a list of clones that would have been rather disconcerting. From metal flake paint jobs to carbon fiber bodywork and wild performance modifications, each of these CB750 cafe racers was a hit with the cafe racer loving community earning them a place in our Top 5.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Number 5 on the list is Dime City Cycles ‘Mabel’ CB750. I was very happy to discover that Mabel made the cut as she’s a great representation of a traditionally styled cafe racer. The guys at DCC dug deep into their own catalogue of parts to put this bike together for a competition run in conjunction with Iron & Air magazine. Mabel isn’t just a bolt-on collection of DCC bits though. Jason and Herm paid special attention to performance. There’s Progressive suspension front and rear, a Dyna ignition, Keihin CR carbs and a tuned 4-into-1 exhaust. Then there’s the paintwork. Nothing too flashy, just some well-placed panels of red that accentuate her lovely curves.

At fourth place is this wild ride from TBC Handcrafted Motorcycles. ‘The Steven Project’ was built in honour of a fallen rider who previously owned the ‘78 Honda CB750. Unlike Dime City Cycles the TBC crew took a much less traditional approach with their build. Tim Bradham of TBC wanted to create a performance focused motorcycle that took styling cues from the race bikes seen at the Isle of Man. The bike’s high tail end draws an obvious connection to modern sportbikes but that lovely inline four adds an unmistakable classic edge. The monoshock conversion and massive brake upgrade were achieved using modern GSXR parts and the bike now rolls on Kawasaki ZX1000 wheels. A pair of slash cut exhaust pipes add to its aggressive appearance and some clever fabrication places the engine’s oil in the rear cowl. Alexandros Hadjicostas’ ‘ElGato’ took out third place. By day Alexandros is a photographer and filmmaker living on the Greek island of Cyprus. Due to a lack of available parts in his hometown, Alexandros shipped bits in from 10 different countries to realise his dream. Along with a lack of parts, there were very few people who could help him to build the bike so he ended up completing it himself. The 1969 Honda started out as an incomplete basket case he bought for 500 Euro and ended up being one of the most popular CB750’s we’ve ever posted. Not a bad effort for a first time builder!

In second place is the only F series CB750 in our Top 5 list. Many consider the F series bikes less appealing than the earlier models, but we’ve been proven wrong by the Oficina MRS RC42 CB750 cafe racer. Granted the only parts of the original bike that remain are the frame and engine (and they’ve even been reworked), but at least Oficina front man Mario wasn’t afraid to give it a go. The bike’s engine is now a cocktail of RC42 and CBX750 parts along with bigger CR carbs, a custom lubrication system and full titanium exhaust. As impressive as the performance work is, it’s the bodywork that steals the show on this bike. Made entirely from carbon fibre it’s the perfect pairing of old school styling and modern technology.

And the winner is... the Old School Engineering CB750 K2. As a selfconfessed lover of metal flake, I have to admit I was pleased to see this one rank so highly. If it wasn’t for a few splashes of metal flake filled colour, Old School Engineering’s CB750 would be an all black build. The abundance of black could very well be why the K2 landed itself at the top of the list, but I think the bikes barebone simplicity also has a lot to do with it. In the cafe racer scene where less is definitely more, this bike excels. Sure the complexity of the work that went into creating this one pales in comparison to the Oficina MRS build, but the people have spoken.

Lastly, I wanted to add my own personal favorite, this TT Motorcycles Honda CR750 replica. I have a soft spot for the legendary Honda CR750. Its historic significance for motorcycle engineering and its importance for the Honda brand is immeasurable.

If I want your opinion, I will give IT to you! Anyone who knows me, knows that is probably one of my all-time favorite statements. Does that mean I don’t value the opinion of others? Well, perhaps sometimes, but I would not grow and learn as a MC member if that were true. Basically, it’s just a smart-ass thing to say to someone when I don’t agree with what they are saying. It’s part of my “charm”. In all seriousness, I read a lot online regarding what “protocol” is in the MC world. I see many sites dedicated to just that topic. Some sites were written by current diamond wearing MC members. What continues to baffle me, is with all their relevant knowledge of “MC protocols”, they miss the single most important fact, that “protocol” is what your club says it is. They are attempting to cast blanket covering rules on a society made up of primarily rule-less people. They are taking something that may have been one way years ago, and saying it should be applied across the board in today’s MC society. So, in that, their point is that a protocol is something in history that must be respected and followed today, otherwise you are breaking “protocol”. As many of you know, I was born into an MC family almost 48 years ago. So, when my old man talks to me about how things were, does that mean that is how things should be today? Well, I guess it could be. I’ve heard stories of club brothers setting other club brothers boots on fire for falling asleep in their rags. I’ve heard stories of club brothers pissing all over other club brothers for the same infraction. I’ve seen other clubs in history who would drag their probates around behind a bike during “biker games” at wild club runs. I personally know of an old tradition of allowing probates to wrestle each other with the winner getting the weekend off at a major event to party with his patched brothers. (I also have seen bones get broken during that tradition, where a probate can’t even go to work and earn a living the next week). 66

I’ve heard and read about many other “protocols” that are not always followed by many MC nations: not riding in a cage with your colors on, taking off your rags and wearing them backwards for photos, allowing ole’ ladies to wear club colors, which was very prevalent back in the sixties and seventies, and ole’ ladies riding in a club pack on their own bike, etc. There are so many “protocols”. How is one supposed to know what is actual? Let me let you in on a little MC secret--there’s no such thing as overriding MC club protocols across the board. Do you know why? Because every club, current and in history has followed their own rules-- not any other club’s rules. I have been associated with clubs that have been around for many decades. I can assure you one guarantee in the MC club world that is a fact, is “protocols” change over time.

Some of you have watched way too many old biker movies, or are taking someone else’s definition of “protocol” as the gospel definition. I know of only one MC protocol that is still as valid as it was when the first MC clubs sewed on their patch--respect. You had better respect the clubs and the members that came before you, or you may be taught a hard lesson in the MC life. So, if you live the life like I do, rich with tradition and history of our own, and want to give me advice on what an MC should or should not do, just remember, “If I want your opinion, I will give it to you”. Keep it real! My road name is Tabasco, and I always approve my opinion! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Buckeye Firearms Foundation’s FASTER Saves Lives Program Continues to Grow by Jim Irvine FASTER is an acronym for Faculty Administrator Safety Training and Emergency Response. It’s a program started after the Sandy Hook massacre in Newtown, Connecticut that helps schools be prepared to stop armed killers. The FASTER Saves Lives training has grown out of a one class idea into a nation leading program that is reshaping school safety and security. For all of us involved, it is one of the neatest things we have ever been involved with. This summer we will conduct a record number of classes. We are doing our first out of state class in Colorado. In June we will conduct 4 three-day classes, at three different locations, in two different states, in a period of 8 days. This is only possible because of the dedication and enormous unpaid hours racked up by volunteers. This year’s classes filled up earlier than ever. There are so many people that school districts are asking us to train that we added another class and still have a waiting list for people we couldn’t accommodate. John Benner of Tactical Defense Institute (TDI) designed our class. There is no one in the country who possesses his wealth of experience and knowledge on active killers and how to stop them. We are humbled by the number of police, schools, and professional trainers from other states who have asked if they could send their people across the country to train with us.

Chris Cerino of Cerino Training Group has put his heart and soul into learning from other experts and transferring that information to those charged with watching over our kids. We promise “world class training” and Messrs.’ Benner and Cerino deliver it. Both Benner and Cerino teams routinely receive high praise from military and law enforcement who say that the FASTER Saves Lives training is one of, if not the best class they have ever taken. School staff tell us they never knew such training was available, let alone thought they would ever have the opportunity to participate. It warms our hearts to hear graduates tell us, “Thank you. I’m a different person than I was three days ago.” Even better is when we hear from them years later, “I’m still a different person than I was before the class, and I’m never going back to the old ways. Because of you my children/school/ community/family are safer.” The training is a life changing event. Gone is the denial that “it won’t happen here. We are safe enough. Someone else will save us. That’s not my job.” In its place we instill an understanding of active killer events. Graduates leave with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to stop a killer, end the violence, and treat the injured.

For most of the country, this program can be instituted on a county by county basis. Ohio has at least two, and soon to be three, counties where every school has armed staff protecting the kids. By working with the Sheriff and local law enforcement we create a way for both law enforcement and education professionals to continue to train and learn together. These relationships have paid dividends that none of us imagined several years ago. This is the future of school safety and security. We are proud to be playing our part. Are your schools making the grade on safety? For more information, see www.FASTERSavesLives.org To donate or sponsor a teacher, mail donations to: FASTER Saves Lives PO BOX 357 Greenville, OH 45331

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights.

1st Time Ever - FASTER Saves Lives Class Opens to the Public by Joe Eaton The FASTER Saves Lives program is opening a very limited number of spots in our July 20-22 class to the public. Churches, businesses, colleges and other public areas are experiencing the same violence we have seen in our K-12 schools. This 3 1/2 day FASTER Level 1 class will prepare you and your family to survive these most horrific events. Created by concerned parents, law enforcement, and nationally-recognized safety and medical experts, FASTER is a groundbreaking, nonprofit program that gives you practical violence response training. The program offers a carefully-structured curriculum offering over 26 hours of hands-on training over a 3-day class that exceeds the requirements of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. The purpose is not to replace police and EMT, but to allow personnel on-site to stop violence rapidly and render medical aid immediately. When violence strikes and lives are on the line, every second matters. Faster response is better response. The limited number of public spots will fill quickly, REGISTER NOW. For question or more information, email Joe@FASTERSavesLives.org or phone FASTER Program Director Joe Eaton at 513.267.6088

“I could not find a sweet spot on my 2014 Harley Ultra for a comfortable ride on the back as we have air shocks. My wife and I met George (the owner) at an event in Ohio, he needed our riding weight with luggage. He put on a pair of Pro-Action Street Shocks and told me to take it for a ride— with no mention of money! How many people do that today? On the first trip we were close, but not what I was looking for. He made a quick adjustment and sent me back out. What a difference after a two-second adjustment! Now he said, you and your wife both go for a ride. She couldn’t believe the difference. No more slamming on her spine as we rode the same roads as before. George asked, “So, what do you think?” We both said, “Just amazing,” and he then asked if we would like a pair and we said, “yes.” So I asked, “What would you have done if I had said no?” His quote was, “Put your air shocks back on.” What a great experience it was to talk and deal with you.” Keith and Emily B. Ashtabula, OH

RECIPES Bacon Wrapped Grilled Corn

Great Oven Roasted Too! 6 pc Corn on the cob, shucked and cleaned 1 package hickory smoked bacon 2tsp salt 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp paprika 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp onion powder 2 tsp dried oregano ½ tsp cayenne pepper 6 tbsp butter 6 sheets foil • • • • • •

Mix all seasonings into a small bowl Rub the cleaned corn with 1 tbsp butter per ear and rub on seasoning mix Wrap each piece with 2-3 pieces of bacon each Wrap in foil tightly and twist ends to tighten To grill: cook for 30-40 minutes turning every 5 To Oven Roast:Bake @ 350 for 30 minutes

BLT Pasta Salad

Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 1/2 pound bacon, cooked crisp, crumbled 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved 1/4 cup chopped herbs (basil, parsley, dill, chives, and oregano) 1 cup butter lettuce, torn 2-3 cups cooked pasta (what ever shape you like) 2 tbsp Dijon mustard 3 tbsp cloves, minced Salt and black pepper to taste 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1 1/2 cups extra virgin olive oil • • •

• • •

In a small bowl, whisk together Dijon, garlic, salt and pepper. Pour in vinegar and slowly whisk in olive oil until combined (I sometimes cheat and just dump it all in a blender lol) While the pasta is still warm, place it in to a large bowl and pour half of the vinaigrette over it, then allow to cool to room temperature. (the pasta soaks up the vinaigrette and makes it super yummy) When youre ready to serve, add bacon, tomatoes, and herbs to the pasta mix, toss to combine. Add more vinaigrette to taste Serve on a bed of butter lettuce. Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! -The Iron Cowboy

Chicken Gyros

Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 4 tbsp garlic, finely chopped 1 tbsp oregano, chopped 1 tbsp rosemary, chopped 1 tbsp thyme, chopped 1 tbsp basil chopped ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (I use fat free) ½ tsp black pepper 1lb chicken, diced into chunks 2 cups plain yogurt 1 English cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped (you can use kind of really big cucumber) ½ tsp salt 4 tbsp garlic, finely minced 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice 3-4 tbsp fresh dill, minced (more to taste) Lettuce leaves 1 red onion, sliced fine 1-2 tomatoes, sliced fine • In a bowl combine lemon juice, garlic, parsley, oregano, rosemary, thyme, basil, yogurt, salt and pepper together, mix well and set aside. • Place the chicken chunks in a large re-sealable plastic bag and lay flat in baking dish or other large container. (this way if it leaks it won’t get all over the place) • Pour in the marinade in the bag and squish it around so you get marinade over all the chicken • Place in the fridge for 24 hours making sure to turn the bag a couple of times throughout the time it marinating • For the sauce you need to thicken the yogurt by removing the excess liquid - place 2 coffee filters into a colander suspended over a bowl and allow it to drain off for 2 hours in the refrigerator. • Then place one half the English cucumber pieces in a colander placed in the sink. Sprinkle lightly with salt and let excess water and drain for at least 30 minutes • When everything is through draining, combine the drained yogurt, drained cucumber, yogurt, salt, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and dill in a bowl and mix well. • Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container till ready to serve • To cook preheat oven to 350 • Remove chicken from marinade and place the pieces into a baking dish and bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. (I love grilling the chicken and lightly grilling the veggies for an extra layer of flavor) • Cut the onion, tomatoes and other half of the cucumber into thin slices • Serve on a pita bread (I use flat bread) with lettuce, onion, tomato, cucumbers and Tzatziki sauce

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

While riding one day, a lone Biker met a farmer riding a horse with a dog and a sheep alongside. The biker began a conversation . . . . Biker: “Hey, cool dog you got there. Mind if I speak to him?” Farmer: “Dogs don’t talk.” Biker: “Hey dog, how’s it going?” Dog: “Doin’ alright.” Farmer: Look of shock. Biker: “Is this your owner?” pointing at the Farmer. Dog: “Yep.” Biker: “How does he treat you?” Dog: “Really well. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food, and takes me to the river once a week to play.” Farmer: Look of total disbelief. Biker: “Mind if I talk to your horse?” Farmer: “Horses don’t talk.” Biker: “Hey horse, how’s it going?” Horse: “Cool.” Farmer: Extreme look of shock. Biker: “Is this your owner? “ pointing at the Farmer. Horse: “Yessiree Bob.” Biker: “How’s he treating you?” Horse: “Pretty good, and thanks for asking. He rides me regularly, brushes me down often, and keeps me in a shed to protect me.” Farmer: Total look of utter amazement. Biker: “Mind if I talk to your sheep?” Farmer: “The sheep is a liar.”

Slow Down or Stop? The police officer had just pulled over a yuppie on a new Harley for running a stop sign. “May I see your driver’s license and registration please...” the officer asked. “What’s the problem, officer?” the yuppie replied. “You just ran a stop sign.” the officer said. “Oh come on, pal, there wasn’t a single car anywhere in sight.” “Nevertheless sir, you are required to come to a complete stop, look both ways, and only then proceed with caution.” “You’ve got to be kidding me!” the yuppie said. “It’s no joke sir.” the officer said flatly, pulling out his citation book and preparing to write a ticket. “Look I slowed down almost to a complete stop, saw no one, and proceeded with caution.” The officer sighed and slowly shook his head. “That’s beside the point sir, you are supposed to come to a complete stop and you didn’t. Now if I may see your license and...” the officer began. “You sure do have a lot of time on your hands pal. What’s the matter, all the doughnut shops closed this early?” the yuppie asked sneering. “SIR!” The officer sighed. “I’ll over look that last comment now let me see your license and registration immediately!” “I will, if you can tell me the difference between slowing down, and coming to a complete stop.” the yuppie said, folding his arms across his chest. A smile appeared on the officer’s face. “Sir, I can do better than that.” The police officer quickly jerked the rude yuppie off his Harley, and proceeded to methodically beat him over the head with his nightstick. “Now sir, would you like for me to slow down or come to a complete stop?”

Pretty Spry An 80 year old man went to the doctor for a check-up and the doctor was amazed at what good shape the guy was in. The doctor asked, “To what do you attribute your good health?” The old timer said, “I’m a dirt biker and that’s why I’m in such good shape. I’m up well before daylight on Sundays and out sliding around corners, “shootin” sand washes and riding up and down the steepest, gnarliest hills I can find at the crack of dawn.” The doctor said, “Well, I’m sure that helps, but there’s got to be more to it. How old was your dad when he died?” The old timer said, “Who said my dad’s dead?” The doctor said, “You mean you’re 80 years old and your dad’s still alive? How old is he?” The old timer said, “He’s 99 years old and, in fact, he went riding with me this Sunday, and that’s why he’s still alive... he’s a dirt biker.” The doctor said, “Well, that’s great, but I’m sure there’s more to it. How about your dad’s dad? How old was he when he died?” The old timer said, “Who said my grandpa’s dead?” The doctor said, “You mean you’re 80 years old and your grandfather’s still living! How old is he?” The old timer said, “He’s 117 years old.” The doctor was getting frustrated at this point and said, “I guess he went dirt bikin’ with you this Sunday too?” The old timer said, “No... Grandpa couldn’t go this week because he got married.” The Doctor said in amazement, “Got married!! Good Lord!!! Why would a 117-year-old guy want to get married?” The old timer said, “Who said he wanted to?”
