FROM THE PUBLISHER So the “off-season” is officially over and we find ourselves facing a season packed with bike nights, charity rides, rallies, and more bike shows than we’ve ever done before. And on top of all of our traditional stuff – we are continuing to get more into racing. So, you can expect to see more Thunder Roads event trailers and displays at motocross, flat track, and drag events all across the state. That doesn’t mean that we are turning our backs on our core segments, quite the contrary. We are just continuing to grow and are expanding our focus. This growth isn’t just about the magazine itself, either. It’s my intention to grow personally, professionally, and as a rider this year. Such growth only comes from pushing the envelope and challenging one’s self. Again, it’s my hope that some of you may join me on this journey as well. If you’ve never been to a Harescramble, Flat Track, or Motocross event – come on out and join us at one of the races. If you’ve ever thought about building your own bike – give our friends over at Skidmark Garage a call, or any number of other local shops that are focusing more on working with folks taking the plunge themselves. If you’ve never thrown a bag on the back of your bike and just hit the road – just pick any of the events listed on these pages and just go! Don’t limit yourself to short runs down to the coffee shop, or even just the same events you’ve always attended. Take the plunge and join us on the road! You may just discover, if you haven’t already – the true secret of being a “biker” and the riding community. Gather round’ folks, because I’ll just whisper it here… The amazing thing about our community is that we all share some core values or spirit that bring us all together. You can ride, even by yourself, across town, the state – or even the country; and when you walk through the doors of a biker friendly, rider friendly establishment – you can expect to meet some great folks. And if you take the plunge and really spend some time on the road – you can expect to end the summer with brothers and sisters all along the path your travels took you. Folks that you might have only spent a few moments with, but there was that connection. That’s what happens when we’re all out there. That’s why I love what I do. I’ve been blessed with having had the opportunity to meet great folks all across Ohio and even nationally at some of the biggest rallies across the country. And I’ve got some great brothers and sisters out there on the road. And the really cool part – riding season is here and we’re all about to start catching up. It’s family reunion time – out on the open road!

THE IRON COWBOY
Upcoming Ride Stops, Rallies, and Runs – that you don’t want to miss! No matter how good we get at what we do, the one challenge that I’ve never really been able to overcome is being at 4-5 places at once. I think I almost have 2-3 down, but more than that seems to be just about impossible! The problem is that there are just so many great rallies, rides, bike nights, and other events going on – and often at the same time, that we end up missing some of the good ones. And it’s made even harder when you’re faced with having to miss an event you’ve truly become a part of – to venture off into unknown territory. This year, though, we’ve decided to make a dedicated effort to seek out new events and expand our horizons. In some cases that means that I’m going to miss events and rallies that have been something of a staple for us – annual events that I’m going to miss a lot of friends at. Fortunately for the magazine, we have some great folks that might help represent at some of these places – however, I’m not going to be there. So, as I consider new stops and destinations, I would like to open it up to our readers and ask that you help me out by recommending your favorite rides, runs, rallies, and stops that you think I should check out. You can email me at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com and let me know what your suggestions are. In return, I’m going to share some of my favorite places and recommended rides that I’ve been on or am planning on doing this year.
And here are a few -
Bike Night Kick-Off’s
Owen Barker Memorial Run
It’s May, so a lot of the Bike Nights are starting up. You can see a handy listing of recommended Bike Nights back on pages 142143. (Yes, I just typed that – there are more than 140 pages in this little, local biker rag!) You can also check out or listing of Thunder Run Tour Stops on page 28 for Bike Nights that we will be making “Official Appearances” at. You can also stay up to date on everything, by following us on Facebook. www.facebbok. com/ThunderRoadsOhio We are constantly adding new events and appearances, sometimes even the day of! That’s the best way to keep up with things. In addition to these stops and all the other stuff listed on our Calendar (pg 75), we’d like to recommend just a few more days that you might want to write down on the calendar. And of course, this isn’t a complete list. If you want that – head on back to our special events listing that starts on page 120. And please don’t be hurt that I haven’t included your event here. There’s only space for a few here, and like our appearances we have to make the rounds. (Cont;d p.11)
Sunday, May 28, 2017 Knuckleheads, Huron OH You can find a lot more about this ride back on pages 84-85 in this issue, so I’ll keep this brief. There are a lot of great folks out there in the motorcycle community and a lot of great causes asking for our support as Riders. That being said, I think that you’d be hard pressed to find a better group of harder working, more dedicated riders than those that wear the BAANC patch as Bikers Against Abused and Neglected Children. And this is their ride, in memory of a young toddler that died at the hands of 24 year old man who had been entrusted with care of the boy. Tragically, there had been previous incidents and in hindsight the tragedy could have been avoided. BAANC actively works within the community to support children in need and you can support their word by simply coming out and attending this event. Enough said. But as if that’s not enough, the event is a fun day of riding, live entertainment, prizes, raffles, and good times with great folks. See page 85 for details.

JOHN PARHAM
The following segment and photos are courtesy the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa which John founded.
1954 – 2017
Several years ago I attended an industry show and happened to be sitting behind John Parham for one of the seminars. I was relatively new to the scene nationally, but I had heard many stories about John and his passion for the riding community. I had thought about going up and introducing myself, but thought that I wasn’t to the point where that would be appropriate. The next day I was working on the floor of the show, when I saw John headed towards our booth. I was then caught off guard when he walked right up and introduced himself and asked if I was the Publisher of the Thunder Roads Ohio. I said that I was and asked if he was familiar with it, to which he quickly replied – “Absolutly, you put out a heck of a magazine. I don’t think I’ve ever really seen anything like it!” For a moment I thought of looking around to see if someone was spoofing me. He then went on to explain, how an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Inductee from Iowa was familiar with our regional magazine in Ohio. “This past year I was in Cleveland for some medical procedures and had to stay in the area for a while. I was staying over… and I was bored of mine. Stuck sitting around all day, so I started sneaking out to check out the local shops. I came across your magazine at one and after that – I found myself going all over town looking for past copies! It’s really a great read!” I assured him that I would have gladly sent him copies, and since then we’ve sent them out to the Museum and offices.

John Parham dedicated most of his life to motorcycling and to his wife Jill. With passion and perseverance, through tough times and success, together they created J&P Cycles in 1979 and helped motorcyclists world wide enjoy two wheel adventures. Later John devoted his time and resources to amassing one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive personal collections of motorcycles, in excess of 300 machines, and found a home for many of them when he moved the National Motorcycle Museum to his home town of Anamosa, Iowa. Then he again invested his time and talent to make this a great place to preserve and present American motorcycling history. He worked tirelessly until his long battle with pulmonary fibrosis consumed him, and now he’s at rest with the Lord. John’s battle ended peacefully with Jill and son Zachery at his side. Enjoying motorcycles in action John created events like swap meets, bike shows, drag races, even first organized vintage motorcycle dirt track racing at the BlackHawk Antique Motorcycle Club swap meet at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa. Taking the store to the customer, John set up massive displays at events like Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and March and October Bike Weeks in Daytona Beach, Florida later building an impressive 40,000 square foot store at Destination Daytona.
Along the way, in 2015, John was elected into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame; a grand reward for his decades of work in the Motorcycle Industry and motorcycle museum world. The motorcycling community has lost one of its most passionate, considerate, entrepreneurial and successful people and he will be greatly missed. Anticipating what would be John’s choice, friends are encouraged to sign up for and support the organ donation program in their community and continue their support of the National Motorcycle Museum where a special Exhibition Development Fund will be created. Rest in Peace John, You will be greatly missed!

The 13th Annual Deyarmin Run Sunday, June 11, 2017 Tallmadge, Ohio Find us on facebook. This is a great event that Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to be partnered with. We will be on site this year, hosting the Bike Show and hope to see all our Bike Show Folks out in support of local veterans in need. The benefit is named after 2002 Tallmadge High School graduate Lance Cpl. Daniel “Nate” Deyarmin Jr., who died in Iraq in 2005. He enjoyed driving and working on cars, trucks and motorcycles so his parents, Edie and Dan Deyarmin, and friends honor his memory every year through the benefit that brings together horsepower, and a lot of it! Since its inception, the Deyarmin Foundation has raised over $400,000 for our disabled and disadvantaged American veterans and their families; assisting them with housing expenses, rent, furniture, food, and more. “The goal is always to try to make enough money to help as many Veterans as possible,” says Founder, Edie Deyarmin. “I’m tickled pink and am very grateful to the community for this every year. The people who help us and support us, it means the world to a lot of people; it’s not just us. It helps us with our grieving, but it helps that what we’re going to be able to do with the money raised again is phenomenal.” Poker Run – 1st bike out at 10:30am, get there early for registration! Early registrations will take place before the event and will be posted on the Facebook event page! Car/Truck Show – Registration begins at 1:00pm, Show begins at 2:00pm Bike Show Presented by Thunder Roads – Registration from 1:00 – 3:00pm Live music, raffles, & great food! MountainFest Motorcycle Rally July 20-23, 2017 Morgantown, West Virginia wvmountainfest.com This year will be 13th year for this great non-profit Rally that works to support a variety of local organizations serving veterans and residents in need, in their area of West Virginia. A relatively short drive from all parts of Ohio, this is a Rally that more Ohioans need to discover! Our partners on the East Coast – Thunder Roads Mid-Atlantic have been working with them for years, and we plan on heading out this year to enjoy the show! This year, Hank Williams Jr is headlining a great line up of entertainers and festivities in the mountains of West Virginia. We had the chance to join Jr. for a show in Sturgis a few years back, and it was a something. He is truly a legend and you can’t help but walk away a fan regardless of your taste in music. There’s plenty of great riding through certainly one of the most beautiful states in our country, and it night – there’s plenty of fun for those looking to get into some shenanigans! Our Brothers at TR Mid-Atlantic host an Annual Girls of Thunder Search Contest / Party – and there’s even an Official After Party most years. Don’t know what their specific plans are for this year yet – but I’m sure it will be a great time. So pack up your TRO Gear and join us for a run to Morgantown and MountainFest! REPORT ISDE Qualifiers Recap Qualifiers in final stages, 12 riders already qualified By Erek Kudla This year marks the return of the AMA International Six Days Enduro Qualifier series of old: seven rounds–three in the East, three in the West and one three-day finale. Six riders have qualified from each of the regional series, so we are going into the final threeday event in Tennessee to qualify our final six riders. From there, the ISDE committee will select one more club team, based on series participation, and once again select the World Trophy, Junior Trophy and Women’s Trophy teams from our fastest off-road riders. On the East Coast, multi-time ISDE medalist Mike Pillar started with the overall win, edging Jake Rowland at Round 1 in Florida. Once the series moved a little farther north to South Carolina and Georgia, the competition picked up, with Ty Tremaine, Brendan Riordan, A.J. Lehr and Alex Witkowski joining the fight for a qualifying spot. After three rounds and six individual days, RPM/KTM’s Tremaine emerged on top, followed by Rowland in a close second. Riordan, Pillar and Witkowski rounded out the qualified riders after Lehr pulled out due to a severe concussion sustained earlier on the West Coast. Brian Storrie again qualified to represent our 40+ riders in the club division. On the West Coast, the battle continued all the way to the final tests. The series started in Southern California, where most riders were out of their element. FMF/KTM’s Cody Webb finished second and was eager to make a club team. “I’ve always wanted to participate in ISDE,” Webb said. “I really don’t even know what I’m getting myself into, so qualifying for a club would be the best for sure.” Webb has participated in the Trials de Nations nine times. Precision Concepts’ Justin Morgan finished a strong third at Round 1, but it was his win in Round 2 in Idaho that solidified his efforts qualifying in second place. Webb crashed out of Round 2 and had to put it all together in Washington at the finale. With multiple racers hailing from the Pacific Northwest, it was not easy, but Webb was able to take the overall win and qualify first for the ISDE in France. Both Anthonee Gibbs and Devan Bolin kept Webb honest, qualifying third and fourth, just 5 points behind after six days of battling. TM-backed Nick Stover took second in Idaho and qualified fifth for his first trip to ISDE. Rick Emerson, a multi-time Olympic skiing medalist, will be joining Storrie on the 40+ Club team.

In their final chance to qualify for the club teams, the riders head to I-81 Motorsports Park in Greenville, Tenn., on May 12-14. The first two days of the event are enduro tests, with a tire flip before the final day of moto test. The Factory KTM and Husqvarna rigs, along with many of the World, Junior and Women’s Trophy riders, will be joining the event as a training “boot camp” for the incoming ISDE participants. Hosted by Full Gas Sprint Enduro, this one-off-standalone event will take all of the most important parts of ISDE and throw them into one weekend.

“I fell in love with the format of the ISDE after seeing it in person back in 2012, and I’m so excited to bring a three-day version with a similar format to the United States as part of this year’s AMA ISDE Qualifier Series,” said Full Gas owner/operator Jason Hooper. “The event will take the ISDE-style special tests that we’ve been emulating in the Full Gas Sprint Enduro Series for the last two seasons, then add in impound, work periods, transfer trail and a final motocross for a real Six Days feel.”

REPORT American Motorcyclist Association thanks Sens. Joni Ernst and Gary Peters for forming Motorcycle Caucus Bipartisan effort to advocate for motorcycling issues PICKERINGTON, Ohio – The American Motorcyclist Association extends its appreciation to U.S. Sens. Joni Ernst and Gary Peters for establishing the first Senate Motorcycle Caucus. Ernst (R-Iowa) and Peters (D-Mich.)—both lifelong motorcyclists—will serve as co-chairs of the caucus, which will advocate on behalf of both motorcycle riders and manufacturers. “The AMA has long sought the establishment of a Senate Motorcycle Caucus, and we are happy that this bipartisan effort has come to fruition,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president of government relations. “We look forward to working with the members of this caucus on all the issues affecting the motorcycle lifestyle and the future of motorcycling.”
“Some of my most cherished memories include motorcycles, from delivering messages as a young girl to my dad while he was working out in the fields, to riding through the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa with family and friends,” Ernst said. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to encourage thoughtful discussion and solutions on behalf of motorcycle riders and manufacturers through my new role as co-chair of the Motorcycle Caucus. “Throughout my 99 county tour of Iowa, I have heard from many of these folks about some of their priorities, including improving safety, infrastructure and energy efficiency. These concerns are shared by folks across our great state and country, and I look forward to working with Sen. Peters toward solutions.”
Ernst said her concern for motorcycles and motorcyclists started when she was a child.
“I’ve loved motorcycles since I was a kid, and I started a newspaper route to buy my first motorcycle at age 11. To this day, I believe there is no better way to see Michigan’s beautiful scenery than by bike, whether I’m riding to meet with constituents and small businesses or taking my bike out on the weekend,” Peters said. “Motorcyclists come from all walks of life, and I can’t think of a better way to bring together a diverse and dedicated group of advocates to discuss everything from safety concerns to manufacturing. I’m looking forward to working with Sen. Ernst as co-chair of the bipartisan Senate Motorcycle Caucus to foster these important discussions and find common ground with motorcycle lovers across the country.”
Peters bought his first motorcycle at age 11.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.
SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, May is Motorcycle Awareness Month! We are back out on the roads and car drivers need to start watching out for us. This is the month that we have to remind motorcyclists need to watch out for those car drivers. Distracted driving is just getting worse by the day, so be aware we are smaller and some car drivers just won’t see us. So far this year we are not doing great but with the nicer weather, we could be in trouble. Last year, 2016, we had 268 crashes and 10 fatalities. This year, 2017, we have had 201 crashes and 8 fatalities. Remember it is our job to ride aware at all times and ride defensively. The one thing that would show our Legislators that we are working hard at zero fatalities is to have Zero Fatalities and keep crashes and crash injuries low. We can accomplish this by taking a training program, staying alert, riding sober and practicing in aa empty parking lot. As an Awareness group we are putting up billboards and yard signs to bring “Look Twice and Save a Life” to everyone’s attention. This is all about riding SMART. The best person to control your destiny is you.
starting a new year with Ohio’s own program. It’s called the Motorcycle Ohio More Program and it was developed to take in Ohio problems like deer, roundabouts and many different road conditions unique to our part of the country. The goal is to get every rider trained and endorsed because it is a fact that unlicensed motorcyclists are involved in more single vehicle and road departure accidents than licensed riders. In case you don’t know, if you take the course you will have your endorsement at the end. You can enroll online at www.Motorcycle. ohio.gov . In spite of everything we see on social media, remember we are basically nice people. We need to ride as if we are representing the Motorcycling world and the whole world is watching. As what we do as bikers, there is no international sign for a biker in
need of help. When a bike is setting alongside of the road we need to check on that bike and rider. Never just fly by. If they are standing there, look for a thumb up or a wave on, but always slow down and make sure they do not need help. I even check on cars. Remember, we are the good guys. Ok I’m done for this month so let’s go riding. Always be responsible, take responsibility and ride responsible. If anyone would like me to come and do a presentation about ABATE of Ohio, the 3-R’s or Motorcycle Awareness, call me. Ride within your limits, Mike Stock Safety and Education Director 419-654-5446 mikestock419@gmail.com
If you read this at the end of April, say thanks to Lisa for getting the mag out in time to read what’s coming up. You still have time to make the Motorcycle Awareness Rally 2017. Gates open at 10am Saturday May 6, 2017 at A.D. Farrow Harley Davidson at I71 and 37, North Star. We head out at 12 noon and go to the Ohio State House to have our day on the steps. We read Proclamations and listen to a few, very few, speeches. We’re out of there by 2pm and just down High Street south to Vickers’s for an After Rally Party. This is our time to let our State Government know we are involved. Ride Free! Ohio Bike Week this year starts on May 26th and goes through June 4th with great times to be had by all. ABATE of Ohio will be set up at Margaritaville on the west side of Sandusky Ohio. The products trailer will be there and you can get your year pins so bring your coupon and get caught up. We have a very good supply of Look Twice Save a Life shirts in neon colors, only $10.00. We are fully stocked on all products. Something that I really believe in is the Motorcycle Ohio Training program. We are 16

THE ROAD TO MOTOAMERICA - Part one of a series So where does it all start? You have that kid that shows an interest in riding. They are too young to put on the street so you start them out on a small bike. Perhaps just putting around in the yard. Something to share with your kids as a family. It’s a hobby that turns into so much more. I know a racing family. Well they didn’t start out that way. Just a dad who rode and a young son that wanted to ride. Then it was two sons that wanted to ride. Finally the youngest decided it was his turn. And their journey began. Meet TEAM DIETZ. I asked them to share their story. We all know each other from our days of racing at Nelsons Ledges Road Course. They are pretty much like every other family only their interest that draws them together is motorcycles. This is a hard working family. Tim is a mechanic by trade following in the footsteps of his Grand Pap and his Dad opening his own shop at the age of 23. The boys play hockey and football in high school and college.
18
Tim Sr. is the Patriarch. He says it all started on a Honda CRF50 when his oldest Timothy started riding at age 3. It snowballed from there in a natural progression when Timothy moved up to a Yamaha TTR90 and number two in line Eric jumped on the 50. When the youngest Steven turned 3 the need for another bike was apparent.
Club racing is what the family did and in Tim’s words “As a father there is nothing better than planning trips and everyone WANTED to go.”
Tim started doing track days back in 2004 and when Timothy turned 11 he asked if he could do track days as well. So at the age of 11 young Tim began his training. Again with three boys that all love motorcycles; well as they say the rest is history. Track days turned into race licenses. Young Tim got his at age 12 and of course the younger ones followed.

Rest Stop
Spring has sprung and the events attended from January until now are but a distant memory for many. January was the International Motorcycle Show in Cleveland and with February the Easy Rider Bike Show in Columbus. March was Daytona Bike Week and who can forget Easter in April. Early May ABATE has their annual Biker Awareness Ride and CMA has their Run For The Son Ride. Then there’s everyone’s favorite, Mother’s Day. Be sure to take Mom for a Ride on that day! In the end of May is Rolling Thunder. I know there will be literally thousands of bikers stopping or traveling through Ohio during this annual event. Some CMA Chapters will have refreshing stops along the route for bikers to stop, get a cool water and snack. Some friendly conversation will also be provided along with a Bike Blessing if desired, all at no charge. Ransomed Riders will be hosting such a stop along Route 32 at the intersection of Route 41. If you find yourself heading that way why not stop in just to say hello. I know they would be eager to sita-spell with you or walk around while you let the blood circulate through your legs after a long ride. Ransomed Riders are a part of the same group you are going to see in Washington D.C. handing

out cool water and manning the booths where you can find someone who cares about you. Why would they care about me, you may be asking yourself. Biggest reason is because Jesus cares about you. Jesus has come into their lives giving them a whole new meaning to life here on “planet earth”, as Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty would say. These people have found a joy in serving others with the sole purpose of sharing the love of Christ with you. CMA’ers are really no different than you. We find ourselves in the same shoes as Paul when he writes in 1 Timothy 1:15 “’This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all.’” NLT We know what we have come from, but, we know what we now have in Christ Jesus is not for us alone. Jesus said it best in John 3:17 “God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” NLT CMA’ers do what they do because they want you to know what is behind the meaning of this verse. God loves you, and Jesus cares for you. With God you can have a completely fresh and new start. The Prophet Isaiah says it well in 1:18, “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.” NLT It’s a great assurance to know your past is cleansed and your future is all new. Why not experience what God can do for you today? In the meantime, if you are headed to Rolling Thunder why not stop by for an awesome visit. GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride! The Way it Works STARTING IN MAY, Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives.
NEW FOR 2017: RIDERS CAN CHECK IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-IN’s AND INSTANT PRIZES! FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS. And it’s SIMPLE – 1. 2. 3. 4.
TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AND CHECK IN AT YOUR LOCATION. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #ThunderRoadsOH It’s that simple.
Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

State and Stop Prizes Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the checkins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!
The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).
For 2017, Thunder Run Riders have the chance to win 6 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts and some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes!
BONUS Check-in’s! The 2017 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.
It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.
You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.
Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.
We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. 24

For 2017, there will be even more emphasis on Event Ride Stops. Rides, Rallies, Bike Nights, and Bike Shows will all be Ride Stops where you can check in to WIN! We will be adding a lot more Bike Night stops all across the state for more mid-week rides.
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.
The RIDE kicks off MAY 10, 2017!
Some folks may sneak you in early, but please understand that we give a little time for people to get set up and everyone on the same page.
As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

SOCIAL MEDIA CHECK-IN’s The exciting new addition to this year is the Social Media Check-In’s and to kick things off – we are adding additional OHIO BIKE WEEK PRIZES for the month of May (2017). These are going to be awarded throughout the month, along with extra TRO GEAR and GIFT CARDS for those trying out the social media check-in’s.
Here’s how it works – At designated stops all across the state (see list on the following pages) there are RIDE STOP signs posted. When you see one of those, you can take a “selfie” of yourself in front of the sign with your card in your hand. You then “check into” the location with your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts and post the picture with the hashtag #ThunderRoadsOH It’s really that simple. If the staff at the location is busy, unavailable, or the place is even closed. You can take a picture and post with your card. We use the card to identify you – so please have the number visible. If we aren’t able to read the number we may not be able to notify you if you win. Also – if we can’t see the sign or easily identify your location, it will also be difficult to validate your win. Your best bet is to “check-in” at the location with your posting, and get a picture in front of the sign. It may sound complicated, but it’s really not. You will find that this is far easier and far faster in most cases. For those of you that don’t have smart phones, facebook, Instagram, twitter – or simply the patience to deal with all this. You’re welcome to still use the clipboard, which all locations also still have. Also – just a reminder that any location where we are set-up is also a Ride Stop. So, if you see our tents or the TRO Trailers someplace – you can pose in front and check-in! It’s that easy! And to kick things off this month, we are awarded special prizes throughout the month – specifically for Social Media Check-In’s!
This Month’s Prizes Our Thunder Run Sponsor this month is none other than our friends over at OHIO BIKE WEEK (www.OhioBikeWeek.com). So with that in mind, we will be awarding a number of special ticket packages for the OHIO BIKE WEEK! May Prizes include: • •
• • •
26

Additionally, there are exclusive VIP parking areas and so much more! Becoming a Rider My First Experience Riding & the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Very recently, I learned what it truly meant to be a part of the riding community as a rider. I’ve gone to the rallies, attended events, rode on the back, and heard stories about the comradery that exists between bikers - but never truly experienced it as a rider. I grew up around motorcycles and always wanted to learn, but there were always other demands and reasons I couldn’t. Finally, though, my opportunity came and I was able to take the basic rider course at the H-D Riding Academy offered by Western Reserve Harley-Davidson. Learning a new skill can be very nerve wracking. You worry that you’ll fail, that you will make a fool of yourself, or want to quit. But when I recently took the class, those fears melted away. And when they did I was pleasantly surprised that the instructors and students embraced me and even cheered me on towards the end of the course with every skill I demonstrated to prove my ability to ride safe. Never was I discouraged and when I made a mistake, my fellow riders helped me brush it off and encouraged me when I perfected my technique. Enjoying the ride and building those relationships I realized, is what riding is all about.
For those considering taking the course and are afraid they have only been on the back- I highly recommend it. Thankfully- I was able to witness many skill levels taking the course. Only myself and one other had never been on a bike. Others that took it had varying skill levels and a few simply wanted to take the course to brush up on skills or earn their endorsement. Regardless of where you started, I believe all would agree that they took something valuable away from the course. Susan and Shawn complimented each other well with different styles of class instruction and proved to be a great duo. I’m excited to share my experience here with you all so that you may feel inspired to get out and ride whether it be your first time or your five hundredth time on the “front seat” of a bike. The course required 3 days of dedication- that roughly added up to 22 hours of both range and classroom instruction. At first I was concerned about not getting enough range time (actual time out on the bike) but Susan and Shawn were on point with time keeping, even utilizing stop watches to keep us on schedule and ensure we learned every exercise they intended to practice with us.
Day one consisted of class instruction to begin- with a bit of the basics, refreshing on the controls we had learned when studying previously for the temp test, and trying our luck out on changing gears on the stationary “test” bike. The test bike is one where anyone can come into the dealership or often they have them at expos where you can actually turn on the bike, ride it, switch gears, and accelerate without moving anywhere. It was fun for a bitbut clearly we were ready to get on the real thing. Our instructors again did not disappoint and had us out on the bikes before noon on Day One. I was relieved to see that we started off slow. Susan and Shawn walked through every step. From how to mount, turn on the bike and dismount safely and correctly. From there each step was done slowly and I imagine some more seasoned riders may have been bored at this point but I learned later it was still very helpful for them to learn the safe and “right” way to do things. By the end of the day, we were feeling the wind and practicing our sharp turning skills. It seems like a far way to go in one day from nothing- but I assure you ever step was learned (Cont’d p.40)

Some take a ways I’d like to share with you. • Always look up and not just in front of you- but where you want to go, especially in a curve. This seems elementary, but helps immensely to help you spot dangers or road hazards ahead. • Practice your skills. One weekend class isn’t going to make me a seasoned rider- and I get that. Ride within your limits and take the time to brush up on your skills. That may mean taking this course or an advanced course or just practicing quick stops at the end of your driveway/u-turns in a parking lot. • Know the risks. Motorcyclists are five times more likely to be injured in a crash than car occupants. That is why it is important to remember Ohio’s campaign- Ride SMART. That means you can have more fun while riding more safely by riding: Sober, Motorcycle-Endorsed, Alert, with the Right Gear, and Trained

in full and both instructors had the ability (with roughly 7 people in the class) to spend some one on one time with you providing feedback and helping you progress with the rest of the group. Day Two was spent completely on the range with some short breaks in between for lunch and water, similar to the previous day. We were fortunate to have GREAT weather for a mid-April weekend and reached 80° at one point. The day was spent fine tuning our skills and learning weaving, quick stops, how to perfectly execute a turn, and swerving, amongst other skills. Later in the day we did a motorcycle safety town and learned to navigate with others on the road while still fine tuning our skills acquired early in the day. By early evening it was time for our evaluations. In this portion, each rider was tested individually on certain skill areas while riding and points were deducted for safety or failed attempts i.e., stalling your bike, putting your foot down in a turn, going outside the line in a U turn, or knocking over a cone-amongst others. Susan and Shawn endearingly referred
to them as “exercises” rather than evaluations which helped to ease the anxiety associated with such. When every rider was finished, we parked our bikes and waited for the instructors to tally our scores. This is where I have something to say about Susan and Shawn. They were phenomenal. The way they handled the evaluations was seamless. Each paper evaluation was given individually and the results were private. They took the time to explain how each section was evaluated and what you needed to pass. When we all left for the night one of the students stopped me in the parking lot and commented, “Isn’t it great that everyone passed”? He had no idea. I only knew that not everyone passed because I individually asked a couple riders if they did. That speaks volumes for our instructors who continuously impressed me throughout the course by treating everyone fairly- never making me feel dumb or experiencing a loss in confidence when I did something wrong. Each time they corrected me so I knew where I needed to improve and encouraged me. And they did that for all of us.
All I’ve learned cannot be contained within this article but I encourage you to take the course and find out more. If you are a Veteran or a First Responder you can take the class for just $99! I guarantee the skills you will obtain are invaluable and might just save your life. Not to mention you’ll have a great time learning them!

Day 3 was just a few hours at night at the dealership and included dinner, a meet and greet with some of the dealership employees afterwards, and a tour that took us even into the back service department. Shame on all of you that haven’t picked up your bike from winter storage yet! From there we finished up our classroom instruction and were awarded our certificates that enabled us to go obtain our endorsement from the DMV. Again, it was noteworthy to mention that when Susan and Shawn called up riders, it was still discreet that some did not pass, and the focus was more on the accomplishment of being engaged, taking the class, and learning what it takes not just to ride- but to ride safely and responsibly.

Western Reserve H-D truly outdid themselves. I had my very first experience as the driver of a street motorcycle and it was unforgettableand thanks to Western Reserve. In addition, it helped that I had two AMAZING instructors, Susan Rzepka and Shawn Dockery (two woman riders- how sweet is that?!). Both have many years of combined experience to be trained and qualified to teach and they certainly lived up to their reputation. Thank you for everything!

Ohio Bike Week The Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event!
T
he biggest story of this year’s rally really centers around the continued development of the Broken Spoke Saloon and Erie County Fairgrounds as a focal point of Bike Week for the first weekend. This year, Memorial Weekend is much more of a dynamic kickoff to the Rally and THE PARTY is at the Fairgrounds. With the development of expanded programming throughout the week there, we hope to see the campground at the Erie County Fairgrounds become more of a draw as well. The idea of having concerts, vendors, camping and a “bar or two” all in one location is pretty appealing. Folks can ride during the day and then generally make their way back to the Fairgrounds to wrap up their day. For those looking to let loose and have some fun, being able to enjoy a great concert, then wander over to a bar and then to a tent to crash is pretty much a home run and all they are looking for. That’s a recipe that has worked quite well for the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, recently Cackleberry in Daytona, and hopefully the fairgrounds here at Ohio Bike Week. Even if you’re laying your head down elsewhere, the Broken Spoke is the place to end your day during the Rally.
52
The first big concert of the week is held at Toledo Harley-Davidson – as they have kicked things off the last several years. Night Ranger comes out to celebrate their 35th Anniversary with a tour stop in Toledo. This is a great party and always draws a huge crowd to the dealership. With a massive portable stage erected, the Bike Week crew transforms the back lot into a true concert venue for the night. Then when the show is over, they bring it all out to Sandusky as the focus shifts there. On Saturday, May 27th, the Erie County Fairgrounds in Sandusky play host to 38 Special followed by country recording artist, John Michael Montgomery on Sunday, May 28th. Earlier on each day, the legendary David Allan Coe performs at the Mad River HarleyDavidson Campus. The focus there, this year, is on earlier concerts and then shifting the party elsewhere – such as the fairgrounds or downtown with the World Famous Block Party. OBW mainstays – Jackyl once again kick off the downtown festivities on Thursday, June 1st with their FREE concert. That’s followed up by another FREE concert with Grand Funk Railroad on Saturday, June 3rd. Of course, those of you with the VIP Tickets or All-Access Passes will have a chance to enjoy the shows front and center. Both of these are available online at www.OhioBikeWeek.com, for the time being. If you want to get either, though, we would encourage you order your tickets or

passes today. Ticket quantities for all national acts are limited by contract in most cases, and Ohio Bike Week is no exception – especially when it comes to the bigger ones you want to see. So, even if it might seem as though they could create VIP tickets all day long, they are actually restricted. Popular local establishments such as The Pump and The Original Margaritaville, as well as The Jack Daniels Barrelhouse Saloon on the waterfront feature live entertainment all weekend and provide plenty of fun for those attending the first weekend. Of course this a BIKE WEEK, so it would be great if we could all get a little wind in our hair in addition to all the concerts and festivities. Thankfully, themed rides run all week with daily rides from Mad River Harley-Davidson and numerous local runs supporting worthwhile causes as well. Traditional rides such as the Tuesday Prison Ride and Kelley’s Island Poker Run on Wednesday are extremely popular and always draw a crowd. The Jesse James Celebrity Charity Ride takes place on Thursday and takes on a local cause by focusing on the needs of a terminally ill local single mother (Madison Brenton) with two young children. The ride seeks to help raise funds for a much needed lung transplant. Once again, the local ownership and focus on the community is evident in these and other aspects of the Rally.

Friday’s Winery Tour continues to become more and more popular, hitting several local wineries and now benefits the local Biker Memorial Fund. The Annual B.A.A.N.C. It’s a great, boots on the ground organization that we strongly recommend supporting.
even, involving over 250,000 motorcycle enthusiasts over multiple venues and locations. OBW has also been a tremendous resource for local charitable organizations as well as those profiting off the visiting riders. Since its inception, over $500,000 has been generated for local non-profits – supplementing the over $60 million annually that the rally contributes to the local economy*.
These are just a few of the countless things for people to see and do while taking part in Ohio Bike Week. There are so many other things that we could discuss, including the Ohio Flags of Honor display, the custom builder displays and Bike Show, and of course the Thunder Roads / Ohio Bike Week Bikini Contest – to name just a few! and see. It is THE MIDWEST’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT with good reason!
I’m an Ohio Biker and this is our home state rally, but that’s not the only reason why Ohio Bike Week is easily one of my favorite rallies anywhere – and it’s not just because I’m a homer or that we work with them. Quite the contrary, we enjoy working with Ohio Bike Week because of how they run their event! The folks at OBW have always taken the approach that they will throw a HUGE PARTY – and the crowds will take care of them by spending their own money as they see fit. The vast majority of the shows and entertainment is FREE – and those few things requiring admission are more than reasonably priced. The OBW masterminds have always believed that if they offer fair prices and a good product – in the form of quality entertainment in a cool setting, riders will support the rally. While you’re enjoying the rally, we ask that you make
Ohio Bike Week is a locally owned and managed rally that was initially launched as a means of jump starting the tourist season for a region often referred to as “Vacationland” – due to the coastline and almost limitless recreational destinations for those visiting. The Bike Week Pool Party! THE PARTY JUST KEEPS GROWING EVERY YEAR! Thunder Roads Ohio’s own IRON COWBOY will be hosting the Official Ohio Bike Week Pool Party & Calendar Girl Contest at the Comfort Inn on Thursday, June 1st. This year we’ve teamed up with RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS to kick things up to a whole new level, once again! The Cowboy, along with a number of our famous IRON ANGELS will keep the party rolling as they host the annual “Bikini Contest” and Calendar Search! This year they will be awarding over $2,500 in cash and prizes – including over $500 in cash to the finalists. Additional prizes include Bike Week Prize packages, hotel stays, professional photo shoots, and of course swag from the sponsors! There are also prize opportunities for those in attendance this year. TRO will be hosting several contests and games on the deck – as well as in the water with the “Annual Bike Week Cannonball Contest”. The event is also a Buckeye Thunder Run Stop so Ride Card holders have a chance to win prizes just for “checking in”. Prizes include OBW VIP Concert Passes and the chance to win one of 6 motorcycles being awarded this year!
Jesse James Dupree, from Jackyl and the Full Throttle TV Show, will again be our special guest as his Annual Charity Ride ends poolside. Each year the arrival of hundreds of bikes from this popular ride always pushes things over the top – and you never know what celebrities will be joining Jesse on his ride. The Bikini Party is a Bike Week tradition that has evolved into one of the most popular events of the week, with it standing-room-only 2 hours before the actual contest the last several years. The rock band SCHOOL GIRL CRUSH, from Cleveland, returns to once again rock the house after last year’s debut. Leader singer Michelle Andree Mitchell and the band seemed a perfect fit for the party – working seamlessly with the TRO Crew to entertain the crowd! As everyone returns for a second pairing, it’s sure to be even better this year.
If you’re interested in being a contestant, email ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com for more information. Advance registration is encouraged as spots are limited. Some spots and Ohio Bike Week Passes will be awarded to winners of various Pre-Rally Parties hosted around the state by Thunder Roads Ohio. Check out the magazine and facebook page for more information and updates on these events. www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio
The Comfort Inn Cabana Bar is one of the best party spots for rally attendees throughout the week. The bar and pool area are open to the public throughout OBW, and it’s always a party! The friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere make it the perfect place to relax before heading downtown or after a ride.

FROM ACROSS THE POND “Indian Motorcycles built in Britain”
By Andy Tallone for the war effort. This strangled their dealer network for inventory, and many dropped out. Indian never quite recovered. Next was the Great Depression which hit them hard. By the time World War II started, they were so financially strapped that the US government decided to award almost the entire motorcycle contract to Harley, who built 90,000 WLAs and WLCs for Uncle Sam, and another 30,000 WLAs for the Soviet Union.

THE OTHER GUYS Indian Motorcycles was “the other American motorcycle company”, referring to Harley-Davidson. During the early 20th century, the two competed neck-and-neck in sales and on the racetrack. For several years, Indian was actually bigger than Harley-Davidson. Yet by 1950, Indian was financially on the ropes and desperate. So desperate that the plan to have the British motorcycle industry build Indians for them actually sounded like a good idea.
Military orders for Indians were very small. And they weren’t allowed to produce bikes for civilian consumption until the war ended, which cost them much-needed cash and also more dealers. They weren’t in very good shape to weather these hard times. Meanwhile Harley-Davidson was raking in the cash and sitting lots of GIs in the saddles of their military bikes, something that would help them after the war. As the result, Harley came sailing into the postwar period flush with cash, itʼs factories set up to run at full capacity, ready to produce new motorcycles for all the GIs coming home with money in their pockets. Many had ridden their first Harley during the war.
POSTWAR PROBLEMS It was quite the opposite for Indian. It had been a very long time since they had had a really good year. They struggled through two wars and a depression and now they were stuck with antiquated, noncompetitive products. As Harley expanded its lineup of state-of-the-art OHV V-twins, Indian was still using essentially the same old flathead V-twin they had introduced in 1922. And they didnʼt have the money to develop a new line of modern OHV V-twin engines that they so desperately needed, if they were to have any chance of competing with HarleyDavidson. They entered the 1950s barely standing, something had to be done if they were to survive.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE HISTORY
At this same time, the motorcycle business was booming over in Great Britain. Just prior to the war, Triumph had introduced the first 500cc parallel twin and after the war, almost the entire British motorcycle industry followed suit. By 1950 the 500s were being punched out to 650s and horsepower was on the rise. Just like with the Harleys, many former GIs had been introduced to fast, light, sexy British motorcycles during the war and they wanted more. British bikes quickly caught on in America and became the Britsʼ biggest market by far. Ailing, struggling Indian Motorcycles recognized this trend and saw in it a possible shot at salvation. They believed that the future was in Britishstyle parallel twins, similar to the Triumph Tiger or the Norton Dominator, not in big V-twins.
The Indian Motorcycle Company had a long, rich history dating back to 1901, pre-dating Harley-Davidson by two years. Despite being the worldʼs largest producer of motorcycles by the 1910s, and tremendous racing success, the company struggled financially for most of its life. During World War I, their entire production run for two model years went to the US government 86

bikes also received a cosmetic overhaul, with garish emblems, bulky fenders, big leather saddles with “tassles”, high bars and bright red paint. From 1955 through 1960 they produced, and attempted to sell these ʻRoyal Enfield-Indiansʼ to the American public, who simply werenʼt convinced. They werenʼt bad motorcycles, Royal Enfields were actually very good bikes. But the looks, and the whole idea that they were attempting to be something they were not, just turned off the buying public. Even stalwart Indian fans were disgusted. By 1961, US-bound Royal Enfields ceased to be badged as Indians, and from then on were sold in low numbers as Royal Enfields (and without all the Indian crap) until the company folded in 1970. In 1960, Brockhouse sold off Indian to AMC (Associated Motor Cycles) of Britain (who also owned Matchless-AJS and Norton, among others) who were in competition with Royal Enfield, and so quickly curtailed the use of Royal Enfield engines in Indian motorcycles. AMC sold Indian again in 1962 to Joseph Berliner who never used the trade name.
Indian’s attempt at building a Brit bike. This is a 1949 Indian 249cc ! Scout.
BRITISH BANKERS TO THE RESCUE In keeping with this plan, they ceased production of the very popular Indian Scout (a flathead V-twin) after the war, replacing it with two new Indian Scouts, both British-style vertical twins, one a 249cc and the other 426cc (which they called a 440). They thought they did everything right, the bikes had all the right stuff. But early models were unreliable and the engines were substantially smaller than their 500cc British counterparts. They bombed in the marketplace. By 1950, theyʼd cured most of the problems and bumped displacement to 500cc (just as the Brits bumped theirs to 650), but their reputation was already ruined and sales stalled. The last one rolled off the line in 1951. By 1953 Indian went belly-up and was now owned by the Brockhouse Corporation of Great Britain.
Fancy paint & big saddles donʼt an Indian make
FLOYD CLYMER TO THE RESCUE The Indian name, now nearly worthless, went up for sale and Floyd Clymer bought it in 1963. He had made a fortune publishing Clymerʼs Motorcycle Repair Manuals, and was deeply involved in the motorcycle industry. He contracted Italian minibike makers Italjet Moto to rebadge their minibikes as the “Indian Papoose” for sale in the USA. They sold well. Next, he commissioned them to design a full-sized Indian motorcycle, built to modern standards and using a Royal Enfield 700 or 750 Interceptor twin-cylinder engine. It was a very nice machine, with top-notch features and equipment, lightweight frames, Marzocchi forks, Grimeca TLS brakes and Borrani alloy rims. They were fast, handled well and they were handsome machines. But they were expensive and so sold in low very low numbers, starting in 1963.
The 1960 Royal Enfield-Indian even had Indian-style fenders.
ROYAL ENFIELD TO THE RESCUE Royal Enfield had been building motorcycles in Britain since 1901 (bicycles since 1893) and had a good reputation for building fast, solid bikes. They never got into major league production numbers though, typical of most Brit bike builders of the day, and were forever trying to find ways to expand sales. Brockhouse put low-volume Royal Enfield together with ailing Indian and a cross-pollination occurred. Brockhouse became the US distributor for Royal Enfield Motorcycles, and ordered all US-market Royal Enfields to be rebadged as Indians. The THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

FROM ACROSS THE POND “Indian Motorcycles built in Britain”
ONE MORE TIE TO BRITAIN Clymerʼs next attempt to mine the Indian name was the Indian-Velo 500. Again designed and built by Italjet to Clymerʼs specifications, the new bike was built around the Velocette 500 single-cylinder engine. Using all the same high-quality, lightweight cycle gear as the 750, the Indian-Velo 500 was 45 pounds lighter than Velocetteʼs own Venom, which used the same engine. Velocette was another age-old British motorcycle manufacturer.
SO, LETʼS TAKE COUNT... So, to recount Indianʼs British connection, in 1946 they introduce their own line of vertical twins which are copies of British designs. In 1953, Indian is purchased by British investment firm Brockhouse Corporation. From 1955 to 1960, Indians are built in England by Royal Enfield Motorcycles. In 1960, British motorcycle conglomerate AMC buys Indian. From 1963 through 1970, Indian Motorcycles are built in Italy, using British motorcycle engines from both Royal Enfield and Velocette.
FINAL MONTH Through May27th
1970 WAS A VERY BAD YEAR And that brings us up to 1970. 1970 wasnʼt a bad year for me. I loved 1970. I was a sophomore in high school, and I’d just bought my first motorcycle, so I was happy. But 1970 was not a good year for anyone associated with Indian. Royal Enfield had just been sold to Madras Motors of India (huh, another “Indian”-connection), who still builds Royal Enfields to this day in India. But all they were now building were single-cylinder bikes, so no more 750 Interceptor twins. (By the way, you know what this means, right? There are ʻRoyal Enfield Indiansʼ and ʻIndian Royal Enfieldsʼ!) Also dead on arrival in 1970 was Velocette, so no more Velocette engines. Then Floyd Clymer died suddenly, and that was the end of this chapter in the history of Indian Motorcycles, and also the end to its “British Connection”. The Indian name traded hands several more times over the years, with a few false starts along the way. But today Indian Motorcycles is back in business and bigger than ever, building modern V-twin cruisers meant to compete with Harley-Davidson and now Victory. A happy ending for a long and sorted tale, that included a quarter-century of British influence that most people weren’t even aware of. 1970 was the last year for the Indian-Velo 500 88

HONDA CRF250 by the Builder Hello my name is Nathan Hall, owner and builder of the 2016 CRF250L. My inspiration for the build stemmed from my roots as a welder/ fabricator from Leroy Ohio. I always have had a love of building things and I decided to take on a bike as a challenge. Dual sport motorcycles get a bad rap a lot of the time, they are ugly, for the most part under-perform, and are the last thing people would ever imagine seeing on a competition floor. The challenge began with performance. In my opinion if a bike doesn’t run as good as it looks than it shouldn’t be shown. I changed my final drive gear ratio from 14/40 to 13/40. Then next was a fuel programmer, a header back exhaust, and a new intake. soon to follow was a complete emissions delete where I was able to eliminate or re-route many unnecessary hoses and wires. I wasn’t to happy with the stock throttle tube on the bike either so I replaced it with a cammed billet tube to give me more control in the low end. Pro taper handle bars, new mirrors and grips is where the cosmetics began. I replaced the headlight with an LED, eliminated the rear fender with
an LED tail light with integrated turn signals and replaced the front turn signals as well, everything with smoked lenses to keep a sleek style to the bike. All white plastics and a seat custom made by Seat Concepts made a major improvement on style and the new seat makes long rides much more enjoyable. At only 22 years old and on a somewhat tight budget I began to look for more things on the bike I could fabricate to improve instead of just ordering aftermarket. I modified the stock engine mounts to open a little more space around the rear of my motor, made a new chain guard and several other small pieces such as the clutch cable support bracket and rear master cylinder. I powdered coated many stock pieces as well to go with the white on black theme. I have so much more to do to this bike and I’m excited to continue the build and see what will be done this time next year. Thank you again!!

Got Mud?
So here are a few basic tips for riding in the mud.
We recently had the chance to run out to the Mansfield Motorcycle Club for one of their Harescrambles, and as luck would have it – it rained most of the morning. While we weren’t riding that day, it didn’t really make a difference. After spending a few minutes sludging back and forth, we were caked. Although – it wasn’t as bad as most of the riders had it. It was also easy to see who the more experienced riders were as they coped with the challenging course conditions. Some of the riders were really struggling, while others seemed to be miraculously navigating the course with little trouble.
• Keep your front end light, leaning back on straight sections which should then help you tract straight. • Commit to a line and squeeze with the knees. • Keep the bike moving always. Assume that someone in front of you is going to fall and always keep an eye out for a second line, just in case.
#1 most important thing to keep in mind as you’re facing a muddy trail. Always remember that “A wet muddy day on the trail is still a lot better than a perfectly clear and sunny day, when you’re working inside or otherwise not riding.” So make the most of our trail time – and have fun!
Photos by D.A. Smith Thanks to the Mansfield Motorcycle Club
• Accelerate just before getting into a rut so that your momentum will carry you through.
As in most situations in life – understanding the challenges you’re facing allows you to remain calmer and experience less stress. BEFORE
Tips from the Crowd – “I spray WD 40 all over my bike before I ride in the mud. It makes washing it off much easier.” “Don’t ride tense. Relax and have fun. Don’t try to force the bike to go where you want it to go – give and take.” “Hit the car wash before going home – don’t let it all dry.” “Keep your momentum going, always.”

How to Choose an Artist for your Custom Tattoo So you’ve decided that you want to get a tattoo, and furthermore you’ve decided you want something custom. Maybe you decided that you didn’t want to pick a design out of a book or off the wall of a shop for something that you are going to be wearing for the rest of your life. A custom tattoo is often a much more meaningful way of expressing yourself through body art – but the key is finding an artist that can create the masterpiece you’ve envisioned. Custom tattoos can be anything you want them to be and in any style, but you have to find a professional that can deliver what you have in mind for your custom tattoo. Finding the right tattoo artist is crucial to getting exactly what you want, and it can be a challenge if you’re not careful. Here are some tips for finding the right tattoo artist for you.

Research Tattoo Parlors in Your Area
Find a Tattoo Artist Who Meets Your Needs
When you first start looking for a custom tattoo artist, talk to people you know about their tattoos. Ask them where they went, who did the tattoo, and what their impressions of the shop were like. Don’t be afraid to approach a stranger with a great tattoo to ask questions. Most people with custom tattoos are extremely proud of the work they’ve had done and will be happy to tell you all about it, especially if you tell them why you’re asking. People with tattoos often feel connected to each other in some sort of strange, shared experience kind of way.
Once you have an idea of where you want to go, the next step is to make contact and meet the artist. Go to their studio and spend some time looking at the tattoo artists’ portfolios. A portfolio is different than the pictures (called flash) hanging on the walls. A portfolio is an actual book of photographs that a tattoo artist takes of tattoos she has done. A tattoo artist’s portfolio is a reflection of what she feels is her best work and reflects the range of her talents, or showcases her particular expertise.
Just talking to people around town will give you an idea of what tattoo shops have a reputation for cleanliness and high quality of work. You may also find yourself told where not to go, so take these warnings seriously. On a personal note, I know an unfortunate young man who decided to try a brand new tattoo shop that was advertising a special. He ended up with a custom tattoo of his guitar with the name of the guitar spelled wrong. In the custom tattoo world, reputation is everything.
It’s worth noting that a professional artist should have a professional looking portfolio showcasing their work. Like any craftsman, they should take pride in their work and their portfolio may be their only evidence of the masterpieces that they have created. If the artist doesn’t have a portfolio or simply as a collection of cell phone shots – that may be cause for concern.
Tattoo parlors and custom tattoo artists get most of their business through word of mouth. A great custom tattoo walking around town is a much better advertisement than a coupon in the phone book as far as tattoos are concerned. However, professional artists will invest in their work and promote their business. Thunder Roads Magazine Ohio works with a variety of artists that have proven themselves to be both skilled and professional in terms of maintaining themselves to established standards. We showcase custom work every month in our magazine so that you can see some of the masterpieces created by artists within our own area and nationally.

If you’re especially drawn to a particular portfolio, the next question to ask yourself is whether or not the tattoo artist is skilled in the style of tattoo you want. There are many different styles of tattoos, from tribal, black and gray fineline, to graffiti style, and every tattoo artist has a specialty. Once you’ve found a custom tattoo artist whose work appeals to you and looks like what you want, the next step is to have a consultation. If the tattoo artist is busy, you may need to make an appointment to come in and talk. If not, you can usually talk about the kind of tattoo you want right then. Once you are sure of your tattoo artist’s abilities, you need to assess whether or not he is enthusiastic about doing your tattoo and willing to work with you to make the drawing for it. You can find a great tattoo artist, but finding one willing to satisfy your needs and is receptive to your ideas is just as important as having talent. (Cont’d p.100)

Meet Your Custom Tattoo Artist Halfway
Price is NOT the most important factor.
Finding a custom tattoo artist that you love is great, but getting the tattoo you want requires more than just tracking down the right person for the job. Meet your new tattoo artist halfway during the creative process so that he can more quickly assess what you are in the market for.
You should get an estimate of how much your custom tattoo will cost before your tattoo artist starts inking you. Some tattoo artists charge an hourly rate for custom work, while others charge based on the size and complexity of the design. Either way, be prepared to pay more for a custom tattoo than for something you pick off a wall.
When you talk to your tattoo artist about making your custom tattoo, it helps to tell her more than just what you want your tattoo to look like. While your custom tattoo artist will make a drawing of the tattoo you’ll receive, you need to help her figure out what that drawing should look like. Take in drawings or pictures of things or other tattoos that match the style or subject of your tattoo. Explain the symbolism behind the tattoo. Make a rough sketch of what you want, even if your drawing abilities are usually limited to stick figures. The more you give your tattoo artist to go on, the more likely you are to end up with a good drawing the first time. When you go back to look at the drawing your tattoo artist has made of your custom tattoo, feel free to suggest changes or modifications. If the drawing looks nothing like what you had in mind, don’t be afraid to say so or look for another tattoo artist. You have the final say about what goes on your skin, so don’t worry about offending his artistic sensibilities. It’s important that you feel comfortable with the artist. You are entrusting your body – both visually in terms of the work that’s done and physically in terms of your health and the artist’s adherence to proper sanitary standards. If the shops a mess and it appears as though the artist hasn’t bathed in months – how comfortable are you that he’s following the proper hygiene standard in regards to his needles and equipment.
Remember that tattoo artists work in the service industry, and they should be tipped accordingly. For a tattoo artist who is willing to take the time to talk to you about your tattoo and draw it for you, be especially generous. While the talking is free, that time they spent just talking was time they could have spent actually tattooing someone else for money. When it comes to custom tattoo work, be willing to shell out some cash. This is one aspect of your life where being frugal won’t get you anywhere good. The best custom tattoo artists charge more than others because the quality of their work is higher and people are willing to pay for it. In five years, you won’t remember how much you paid for your tattoo, but you will still have to look at it every day. Ink Shots taken at Ohio Bike Week 2016 Thanks to Dan Hare, TRO PHOTO Contributed by Thunder Roads Ohio, Iron Cowboy IRON COWBOY PRODUCTIONS, LLC 2017 ©
The artist should also treat you with respect and be appreciative of the fact that you are entrusting yourself to their care and artistic ability. If the artist is rude or condescending towards you or acts as though you are privileged to warrant their time – chances are you’re not going to end up getting exactly what you want. As you’re developing the design never forget that it’s YOUR tattoo. Never let the artist talk you into something you’re not comfortable with. Regardless of what they want to create or what they think looks cool – it’s YOUR tattoo.

There’s No Place Like Home Do you know who runs your Club? You noticed I didn’t ask if you know who the elected leadership is, I asked who runs it? Maybe I should ask it this way, is it a Dictatorship, or is it a democracy? If you are sitting there thinking about your answer, I can only hope it is the correct one. It should be obvious. Is it your National officers? Is it your Chapter officers? All of those should be the wrong answer. The correct answer should be, the body of the club membership runs your club.
That is not meant to diminish or disrespect those that You, the Club, voted into Leadership. There are far too many critical decisions that must be made that require your elected leadership to speak or act on your club’s behalf. Every action cannot come to a vote, or your club will never get anything done. Hopefully your membership put those leaders in place because they trust that those Brothers will act ALWAYS in the best interest of the entire body that they represent, and not for their own personal interest. If you have elected leaders that act for themselves, then I’m telling you that you elected the wrong Brother. Leadership is to lead by example, to SERVE, not Bully members or Boss people around to serve themselves. If you have that type of personality as an elected leader, then you don’t have a leader, you have a Bully. I have served as the top Elected Leader on more than one occasion in my club life. It is Not an easy job. I have always said, you better respect the position, even if you don’t like the person in it, because someday you may be that guy. Nothing pisses me off more though than to hear of someone’s Club Brother whine or bitch about a requirement, that they knew full well when they joined your club. If your Nation is structured correctly, I would hope that would have a set of Bylaws. National, State or Chapter at least. Those are the “guidelines” that set the expectation that every member should have had the chance to vote
102
on, discuss, and approve at some point. They can never be a “catch all” for every situation that your elected leadership will encounter. None the less, if there are rules and consequences for breaking those rules, as there should be, then don’t bitch about it when you must pay that fine, wear that “Rebate Vest”, or otherwise. No one mandated that you join the club. In fact, it should be considered a privilege that few are even offered the opportunity, and even less make it. I’m not going to say “nothing” worth having comes easy, because if I won $60 Million Dollars off a $1 Lottery ticket, it sure as hell is worth having, even if it came easy. But this is a Volunteer Army you joined. Nobody made you join, or stay. What I prefer is knowing the level playing field though. If I know I have agreed to pay a fine for missing something when I joined a club, and I miss it, I pay the fine. I don’t cry about it or make up BS excuses why the rule shouldn’t apply to me. But if you have leadership that constantly wants to make up BS rules along the way, then by God your Chapter or Nation need to have the balls to stand up for themselves as a unit. Remember what I said? The Club Belongs to the Body of the Membership, not any individual. I hope you have enough sense to know how to address that situation respectfully and correctly. In all facets of life, you will rarely ever convince someone that they are wrong. But if you as a member disagree with something that is going on, then you as a member should have the right to have that concern addressed. If you are in a club that won’t let an individual voice speak their concern, then you are in the wrong club. I have no problem saying to Leadership, “I disagree with (a situation) and here is why”. But guess what, here’s another revelation, things won’t always go your way. Get over it.
I hope you have elected leadership that you respect. They should be the men who have gone above and beyond for your club. The guys who live it, and have lived it. The guys that you know when you’re making up some BS excuse to get out of doing something, they are there doing it. Those are the men who have earned it. Does every individual leader have the right answer for every situation? I highly doubt it. I am still learning, even years later. How did I make the best decision I needed to at the time a situation confronted me I had not previously encountered? I took council with those I respected. There are so many good ways to handle a situation, as a leader you value other points of view. Many of the decisions that have been made in my club life were not entirely my own, even when I delivered them. They were a composite of a few different points of view. That my friends, is true leadership. At the end of the day, I hope that your club is ever evolving into the best it can be, so you, like me can say, There’s No Place Like Home. Keep It Real! SIG-Sauer’s P320 Photos and Article by: Brody Kennen
T
he SIG-Sauer P320 is probably the most searched of firearms on Google and the most popular handgun on the market right now. I don’t believe that there are many who would disagree with that statement. Make no mistake, the P320 was popular before the U.S. Army concluded their Modular Handgun System program and named the striker-fired SIG the winner. The key word there – and stone cold fact – being modular. I was fortunate enough to be allowed to borrow a full-size 9mm P320 from a friend recently. I must say; this SIG platform continues to leave an impression on me. I have had the opportunity to fire several 9mm Compacts and one .45 ACP Compact, in the past. The P320 is defined by its modularity. The Fire Control Unit [FCU] is the serialized component (the “firearm”, per the ATF) which allows for the frame and slide components to be sold without the need for an FFL transfer. Comparatively, a Glock is serialized in three places: slide, barrel and frame. This platform simplicity is likely one of the biggest factors to the Army’s decision on Beretta M9 replacement, over the Glock. Essentially, two Glocks would be purchased for every individual soldier due to the lack of a standalone FCU – as the Army wanted both a full- and compact-sized offering. However, this statement is based on my own assumption that Glock’s MHS variant is not radically different from either the current Generation-4 models or the recently seen, law enforcement-deployed “Generation-Ms”. I will mention that the closest thing to the MHS P320, that you can purchase, is a P320 RX slide and a separately purchased Massachusetts-compliant frame for the manual-safety feature – and it still won’t be a 1-to-1 match. Compared to the older P220 lines of SIGs, the P320 has a more refined aggressiveness about it. This is due to the simple striker-fired design. The P320 is less busy to the eyes, but it retains the old-school, signature SIG slide-cuts with a less prominent beaver-tail. The slide is mounted up higher, in typical SIG-Sauer fashion, than on the Glock and it felt top-heavy. That did not hinder the shooting of the SIG. In fact, I shot better groups during strings of controlledfire. The top-heavy nature of the P320 helped 104
reduce muzzle flip while firing. In tandem with an even amount of pressure, applied to the trigger, I could form some accurate groups with the handgun. I would string the group if I didn’t pay attention to the pressures. Unlike the P229 that I run, the P320 practically threw magazines clear of the well when reloading. Depending on the reload drill, it was clear of the well by the time the next magazine was in; or it was firmly and deeply planted in the palm, to be retained in a dump pouch or the magazine carrier. There are a couple of points to mention though. The Glock sights are still factory and it is almost universally agreed that they are the worst factory sights on the market. Furthermore, the P320’s trigger was modified by the owner. The factory, single-piece curved trigger was replaced with a GrayGuns Practical Enhanced Leverage Trigger [PELT – Straight], and the factory springs were retained. The GrayGuns trigger looks very much like the future X-Series trigger. The P320’s stock trigger is curved with a slightly longer take-up before the break, but it is smoother than most others. The P320 forgoes the trigger safety mechanism with internal safeties. Several safety options can be purchased: a tabbed trigger, the magazine disconnect safety and buying a ban-state compliant manual safety model. The frame of the P320 handgun is where it excelled, by a fair margin, over other brands. The grip angle was more natural overall and the reduction of the palm swell felt more comfortable – versus the Glock frame. The texture of the grip is pleasantly subtle, but planting the hands felt nicer on the platform. The controls, sights and beavertail stand out prominently. When anchoring my index finger and thumb, utilizing

a combat grip on a Glock, I would place them in the takedown recesses on a Glock. The SIG’s takedown lever is an external swing-arm on the left side and offers a nice shelf for right handed users to put downward pressure on, but it doesn’t work for left-handed shooters. The SIG gets a bonus for forward charging serrations on the slide, for ease in press-checks. Glock finally addressed this control with 2017 G17 and G19 FS models, this April. After returning my friend’s full-sized P320 to him and shooting another P320 Compact, I simply couldn’t stand it anymore. I went hunting that next Monday and found exactly what I was looking for. I do not know what it is with the FDE-colored models’ following me home recently… I will write an official review on the compact that I bought soon. AMERICA’S
BEST FIREARM
VALUE
CARBINE $335 MSRP (9MM RED DOT)
We’re all looking to get the most value from every dollar we spend. Fortunately, value is standard equipment with every Hi-Point purchase. No matter what environment or condition you find yourself in, there’s no comparison to Hi-Point firearms for rugged and reliable service.
CARBINE $335 MSRP (9MM 4X SCOPE)
Whether you’re a varmint hunter, plinker or target shooter, no one else delivers so much solid, reliable performance, for so little. Hi-Point carbines are available in 3 hard-hitting handgun calibers – 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP; and Hi-Point handguns in 4 popular calibers - .380ACP, 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP. Maybe we are bragging, but we truly believe that handsdown, Hi-Point is America’s Best Firearm Value.
HANDGUN $199 MSRP (.40S&W/.45ACP)

“I could not find a sweet spot on my 2014 Harley Ultra for a comfortable ride on the back as we have air shocks. My wife and I met George (the owner) at an event in Ohio, he needed our riding weight with luggage. He put on a pair of Pro-Action Street Shocks and told me to take it for a ride— with no mention of money! How many people do that today? On the first trip we were close, but not what I was looking for. He made a quick adjustment and sent me back out. What a difference after a two-second adjustment! Now he said, you and your wife both go for a ride. She couldn’t believe the difference. No more slamming on her spine as we rode the same roads as before. George asked, “So, what do you think?” We both said, “Just amazing,” and he then asked if we would like a pair and we said, “yes.” So I asked, “What would you have done if I had said no?” His quote was, “Put your air shocks back on.” What a great experience it was to talk and deal with you.” Keith and Emily B. Ashtabula, OH

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
When Albert Einstein was making the rounds of the speaker’s circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work. One night as they were driving to yet another dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who somewhat resembled Einstein in looks and manner) that he was tired of speechmaking. “I have an idea, boss,” his chauffeur said. “I’ve heard you give this speech so many times, I’ll bet I could give it for you.” Einstein laughed loudly and said, “Why not? Let’s do it!” When they arrived at the dinner, Einstein donned the chauffeur’s cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. The chauffeur gave a beautiful rendition of Einstein’s speech and even answered a few questions expertly. Then a supremely pompous professor asked an extremely esoteric question about antimatter formation, digressing here and there to let everyone in the audience know that he was nobody’s fool. Without missing a beat, the chauffeur fixed the professor with a steely stare and said, “Sir, the answer to that question is so simple that I will let my chauffeur, who is sitting in the back, answer it for me.”
A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to “honor” thy Father and thy mother,” she asked, “is there a ommandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?” Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, “Thou shalt not kill.”
A tour bus driver drives with a bus full of seniors down a highway, when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady. She offers him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munches up.
I made a traffic stop on an elderly lady the other day for speeding on U.S. 166 Eastbound at Mile Marker 73 just East of Sedan, KS.
At the ninth time he asks the little old lady why they do not eat the peanuts themselves, whereupon she replies that it is not possible because of their old teeth, they are not able to chew them.
After approximately 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder again and she hands him another handful of peanuts. She repeats this gesture about eight times.
I asked for her driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance.
“Why do you buy them then?” he asks puzzled, whereupon the old lady answers,

She looked me right in the eye and said, “Not a damn thing!”
“Well,” she continued, “then how can I get to heaven?” One boy confidently answered, “You’ve gotta be dead!”
