T

o be a “biker” means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and that’s ok. Some get it and some don’t. It’s not about watching Sons of Anarchy or wearing old Orange County Choppers shirts – but there’s nothing wrong with those things either. It’s not about owning a Harley or never owning a trailer. In fact, I don’t think it has anything to do with owning anything in particular. It’s about your lifestyle and attitude towards life itself. I believe that the passion that binds riders and “bikers” is a love of freedom – embodied by our ability to fly down the open road with iron between our legs and virtual wings on our backs. It’s a sense of breaking free from the constraints of our daily routine and experiencing the wind in our faces. And it’s about the brotherhood or sisterhood we share with others that have similar passions. To fully experience the biker lifestyle you don’t have to buy a $30,000 motorcycle (but have at it if you can spare the scratch!), but you might consider joining a few thousand of your brothers and sisters at a rally. Or join dozens of fellow riders at a local poker run. This issue of TRO contains dozens, if not hundreds, of rides, rallies, and runs. We have old school bashes and downtown rallies. For those craving an old school camping experience with thousands of brothers (and sisters) you’ve never met – there’s WETZEL (pages 10 and 103). For those into racing and a more family experience we offer VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE DAYS (page 14). For those looking for the “ULTIMATE BIKER EXPERIENCE” I offer up STURGIS (page 20). Not everyone can break away for a week or even days. Fortunately we have hundreds of rides and local events to fuel the fire as well. To me, being a “BIKER” means being a part of a community. It means being independent in your choices, but still not afraid of being your brother’s keeper. It means sharing in the lifestyle we all love. Having a bike is only the first step. Next comes riding, and then you need to join the party! Get out and join the motorcycle community! We come in all shapes and sizes – from just about every background and profession imaginable. I don’t think you’ll ever find a more accepting family – nor one more generous. You just need to come on out and join the reunion we celebrate at every rally and ride – even if it’s just out on the local roads. Come ride with us – and celebrate life!

O H I O B I K E W E E K – Another one in the b ooks! I

f you’re a Midwest rider, chances are pretty good that your summer starts with OHIO BIKE WEEK. This year marked the 15th Anniversary of the rally which has evolved from a State HOG Rally into one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the nation – welcoming riders of all kinds to a celebration along the shore of Lake Erie in Downtown Sandusky.

Thunder Roads Ohio has been involved in Ohio Bike Week since our inception, producing the Official Rally Guide and working to promote OBW anytime we can. It’s a great partnership that we are proud of. This year’s edition marked several significant changes along with many of the same components which have become tradition for many riding enthusiasts. OBW is relatively unique in that it includes programming for two full weekends. The first weekend focuses on the kick-offs and includes some events throughout the state. The second weekend focuses on the World Famous Block Party in Downtown Sandusky. In between there are rides, concerts, pool parties, and trips to the islands! Other rallies try to focus everything on a single weekend – and they often question why OBW stretches things out. I don’t know all the inner workings and thoughts of the OBW Shot Callers – but I do know Ohio weather and I’m guessing that’s a

8

big consideration as they plan things out. You never really know what the weather's going to be like in early June, but it’s a fairly safe bet that it’s going to change almost day to day.

This year was no exception, and once again while one weekend saw rain – the other was near perfect! The first weekend was a challenge as storms raked the entire state. Venues were changed and more than a few riders were soaked. That’s ok – we live in Ohio and it’s to be expected. The OBW crew scrambled, as they always do, and got everyone through the storms. The shows went on and people had a great time. As the week went on though, the skies cleared and the Block Party went on without a hitch – well, at least not in terms of the weather or anything that the crew didn’t handle “behind the scenes” for most of us. We are going to hold off our full coverage of Ohio Bike Week for at least another issue or two as we focus on upcoming rallies and events in these summer issues. The fall and winter is a better time for looking back upon the rallies, rides, and parties from over the summer. We’ve shared a few hundred photos on our Facebook page (Facebook. com/ThunderRoadsOhio) and will continue posting more over the upcoming weeks. We will sneak in a few OBW related articles here

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

and there, such as Back of the Bike in this issue and some tech articles involving specialists at the rally, so stay tuned. Our big OHIO BIKE WEEK feature will be in later months when we have the space to give the event the coverage it deserves. However, I didn’t want to let any time go by – before thanking some folks involved in this year’s success. Ohio Bike Week is an incredible endeavor put on by an amazingly small group of people. It really is a family affair involving several families and a lot of people that have become family over the years. So we would like to thank, in no particular order – Brad, Steve, Andrea, Carston, Rick, Rindy, Bailey, Sue, Vev, Beeks, Troy, and everyone else involved at Ohio Bike Week. These days it’s easy to imagine a giant faceless corporation producing events such as this, but in this case it’s a relatively small group of people that pull off a party for hundreds of thousands of people! We would also like to thank our local partners in the area – including Dave Taylor and his crew at the State Theatre (where we host our Iron & Ink Thunder Zone), Margaux and the crew out at Margaritaville, and the Comfort Inn / Cabana Bar team that we work with for the Bikini Contest and Pool Party every year. Thanks for throwing such a great party! We’re looking forward to next year!

Over the past several years the city of Erie has played host to a growing rally just over the border in Pennsylvania. This year, TRO has teamed up with our friends at Thunder Roads Pennsylvania and Harley-Davidson of Erie to help showcase the rally and join in the fun! The rally runs from July 13th-19th and features something to do every day. Western Pennsylvania features some of the Midwest’s most scenic roads. Whether you’re riding along the Lake Erie shore or through the hills, it’s a great place to escape to. The weekend is the big party, though – with national headliners and feature bands all day. On July 18th there will be a Guinness World Record Attempt at a Harley-Davidson Parade that’s sure to be pretty cool. Wetzelland 2015

Not all events are intended to appeal to everyone – and the ones that do often times end up being rather bland affairs. That’s probably never been said, though, about Wetzel. Wetzelland is a legendary old school biker event that is celebrating its 29th year this July 23rd-26th. This is a bash – not a rally, which is a distinction worth making. It’s a party that you will want to block the whole weekend out for. If you think you’ll just come down for Saturday and leave after the concert, you’ll undoubtedly regret it and make bigger plans for next year. Make no mistake, though, old school doesn’t mean small and winding down. Wetzel is a bash that draws thousands and features Bret Michaels as the feature act this year. Veterans come Friday or even Thursday to set up their camp and park their bike for the weekend. Groups come from

across the country as an annual pilgrimage to celebrate the biker life and kick back! There’s a poker run on Friday and rodeo games that everyone’s invited to join in on. A bike show and tattoo contest on Saturday are casual and the definition of “ride-in”. Just like everything about this weekend – they are laid back and casual affairs. If you want to truly experience the “old school biker lifestyle” and all that it represents – you need to make it out to Wetzel. It’s not for everyone – and it’s certainly a 21 and over crowd, but for many it will be a life changing event and their favorite party of the year. If you spend most of your time judging others and spend more time polishing than riding – this may not be the event for you. And that’s OK. But if you’d like to kick back and just enjoy life with some rowdy friends – this is the time for you. When I say rowdy, I don’t mean scary or mean – I just mean having a good time with the throttle cranked. For a taste of what Wetzel is like, visit our Facebook page and click on the Photo Albums. (Facebook. com/ThunderRoadsOhio) We have hundreds of photos from years past. For many on the team, this is one of their favorite events of the year!

Thunder Roads Ohio will be set up at this year’s Wetzel Rally – with the full trailer and crew. We will have TRO Gear and will be checking in folks for the Thunder Run. Stop on by and say hi!

Well,

let’s get back on the “Veteran Assistance” road again! Last month we talked about our DD Form 214 and how that is our ‘link’ to our military history. So we now that we have our DD Form 214 secured in our saddlebag, what should we do next? I can’t say this strongly enough; it is of utmost importance that you immediately apply for your Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Benefits. So many times I come across Veterans that have not even applied for these benefits and it baffles me each and every time. It is your entitlement for your honorable service to our country and an unbelievable opportunity to be enrolled in our country’s largest and most comprehensive health care system at NO COST to you. Remember, this is only ‘enrollment’ and does not mandate usage. But if you would like to utilize the VA Health Benefits program, that option is available to you once you are enrolled. If you are NEVER enrolled, the prospect doesn’t even exist for you. So if you aren’t enrolled, please apply immediately using any of these three simple methods: 1) Online, 2) In Person, or 3) By Mail.

T

he simplest way to apply for VA health benefits is to complete and submit VA Form 10-10EZ, Application for Health Benefits online at https://www.1010ez.med.va.gov/ Merely fill out the application online and electronically submit it to the VA for processing. No need for additional documents to verify military service. If you were recently discharged, the VA will get your military information for you. Applying online is faster and significantly reduces the processing time for enrollment and you will be able to access your health care benefits more quickly. Please be sure that you will immediately receive a confirmation message notifying you that your application has been received after you submit online.

B

ut let’s say you’re more conventional and want to apply in person. Just get on your bike and go to your local VA health care facility, step to the information desk and simply inform them you want to apply for VA Health Benefits and they will guide you to where you need to be. Once there, you will basically complete VA Form 10-10EZ, Application for Health Benefits and turn in your application on the spot.

L

astly, you can apply by mail. If you need help filling out the VA Form 10-10EZ, just call 1-877-222-VETS (8387) from 8 am to 8 pm Mon -- Fri, EST. While on the phone you will

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

lmo

ic le Ohio State resident -- U.S. Veterans MC (USVMC)

complete application over the telephone with a VA representative. Within 3-5 business days you will receive the completed VA Form 10-10EZ, Application for Health Benefits for you to review, sign and return. If you feel you don’t need a representative to assist you filling out the application, you can do it on your own by picking up an application at your local VA or download the application online. In either situation utilized to complete the application, you will need to mail the application to: Health Eligibility Center, 2957 Clairmont Road, Suite 200, Atlanta, GA 30329-1647.

Whatever the manner used to apply, generally you will

receive written notification of your enrollment status in the VA health care system within 5 -7 days. Your enrollment status letter will let you know what you are eligible for alongside also giving you instructions on how to appeal the decisions if you do not agree. Please remember, your comprehensive VA Health Benefits includes all the necessary inpatient hospital care and outpatient services to promote, preserve, or restore your health. These services include preventive care, inpatient care, ancillary services, specialty care, and mental health services.

Once you are enrolled, the programs and entitlements are

abundant through the VA Healthcare System and don’t forget, you earned these privileges. With over 1,700 treatment sites nationwide, you can expect VA’s highly qualified and dedicated health care professionals to tirelessly work to meet your needs, regardless of treatment program or location.

Well, time to pull off the road and get a bite to eat …

come back next month as we will talk about Disability Compensation, your tax free monetary benefit paid to Veterans with disabilities resulting from a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service. Until then; ride safe, and always keep the doors of wisdom open. USVMC is a non-profit 501(c) (19) organization driven to show respect and support for all Veterans who served honorably. USVMC is a proud member of the Ohio Confederation of Clubs (COC). Ohio COC is rich in Veteran support initiatives and can assist with critical Veteran necessities.

If you have a Veteran need, please speak to a member of COC or please email elmo.usvmcoh@gmail.com

FROM THE BACK OF THE BIKE

BY NANCY BEACH

You know what is really fun? Besides everything in the summertime! Starting the summer off with Ohio Bike Week and sunny skies! I just have to talk about the biggest and best OBW yet! Many of you were there and it was so much fun! Lot of poker runs…activities…. entertainment…rides to special places…a parade with more than 2000 bikes and led by the impressive and beautiful Clydesdale Horses! Add to that a few weddings, a few engagements and helicopter rides!!! It really was a fun week and a perfect way to kick off a summer of riding. I just have to share some of the pictures that are my favorites. If you were there, this will bring back some memories and if you weren’t…. this may inspire you to mark your calendar for next year. Doesn't matter where you live. I met people from all over the country including the guys in the picture that traveled from Virginia and Pennsylvania! Onto the rest of the summer. We did get some riding in this past spring but it was pretty sporadic with weather determining our trips. But, now it is time for serious riding. My big plans include Bike nights, the rodeo and possibly a poker run or two. And those last minute…. “let’s get on that scoot and go downtown” rides. Love those the best! So enjoy the pictures and the summer…be safe. And have a Happy Fourth of July! And maybe…just maybe in my travels I will see you from the back of the bike!

REPORT History Comes Alive at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days For 72 hours in July, central Ohio is the center of the vintage motorcycling universe. It was 1947. You just picked up a one of the last Knuckleheads to roll out of Milwaukee, an EL 74. With the hand-shift fourspeed transmission, wraparound oil tank and chrome accents, you were the king of style -- and king of the road. Or, perhaps it was the summer of 1968, and you were riding one of the all-time utilitarian motorcycles, a Norton Commando. With the punchy 750cc powerplant and next generation frame geometry, you ruled the twisty backroads.

Every year, tens of thousands enthusiasts join the AMA and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, and nearly 1,000 independent vendors at vintage motorcycling’s biggest bash. The event includes racing, the country's largest motorcycle swap meet, seminars, stars from the sports past and present, bike shows and more, all designed to recapture a simpler time and remind us what's fundamentally cool about riding motorcycles. For a hint of what you’ll experience this year, check out our past coverage of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at www.AmericanMotorcyclist.com. Then, buy your tickets while you’re online and mark your calendar. You’re about to experience the best that motorcycling history has to offer -- all over again.

Then again, maybe it was a 1974. You were 15 years old and came home from school one afternoon to find a Honda CR125 Elsinore sitting in the driveway, next to your dad, grinning ear to ear. Memories like these make it obvious why we call them “vintage” motorcycles. And there’s one place where you’ll find these memories come alive -- a bike, a part or even a racer, pitching it sideways in turn one or dueling through the esses. That’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Morrow County, Ohio.

The MRF has been busy in DC protecting motorcyclists rights. An amendment was passed that struck language in the current Transportation Budget that would have allowed the federal government to lobby states and local governments. This lobby ban is currently in place because the 1998 TEA Bill had a provision that created this ban. The reason this ban is important to us is that it is the only thing that keeps NHTSA from being able to financially put pressure on states to pass mandatory helmet laws. The MRF is also opposing a notice from NHTSA that would change construction requirements on helmets that would make it easier for an officer to determine if the helmet meets safety standards. Here in Ohio HB 154 (To amend sections 4511.132 and 4511.27 of the Revised Code to provide that when a motor vehicle passes a bicycle the safe passing distance to the left is three feet, and to alter the protocol for proceeding into an intersection that has malfunctioning traffic lights.) makes it legal for a motorcycle to proceed through a (malfunctioning) traffic signal. ABATE did not initiate this bill. We discussed this issue at our State Seminar. We will also be discussing this issue at the next State BOD meeting whether or not we are opposing or staying neutral on this bill. I have been tracking a few of our crashes around the state and I would love to find that one thing that we could use to avoid a crash. With over 50% of crashes being the motorcyclist fault, it tells me that we need to do a better job of training riders. 2014 Crashes -1246 and Fatalities – 44 and 2015 Crashes -854 and Fatalities -30. If we could get everyone to just think ahead and not have those single vehicle crashes, we would be on our way to 0 fatalities. As it has been said for years, if we just keep educating the motorist and the motorcyclist, we will all be safer. Blind spots are something that is forgotten over time and we need to be reminded of them. Trucks, RVs, Vans, SUVs and Busses all have very large blind spots. Don’t hang out on the side of any vehicle. The larger the vehicle the bigger the blind spot. If you can’t see the drivers face in their rear view mirror, then he can’t see you. Don’t hang out to close to the rear of any vehicle. If they brake suddenly you may not be able to stop and you cannot see what is up ahead. And now to the front - never cut in to quickly. Remember we stop faster than a lot of larger vehicles. And last, a lot of larger vehicles make wide turns. Don’t pass on the right. Once they start that turn they can’t see you. We all need to use our blinkers or turn signals more often. As bikers we need this tool to let everyone know what we are doing, and motorists need do the same. If hand signals will bring awareness to your turn, use them. If they don’t know hand signals they will at least know something is going to happen. Go online and you can find all kinds of motorcycle hand signals. They are very handy when riding in a group. Roundabouts are here to stay, and we need to learn how to use them. We need to educate ourselves about roundabouts because they are much safer and reduce head-on collisions. Slow down and yield at the entry to traffic. Stay in your lane within the roundabout and use your turn signal to exit. If there’s more than one lane, use the left lane to turn left, the right lane to turn right, unless directed otherwise by signs and pavement markings. Very important - trucks need all the room, so don’t get in a bad spot. Hope this will help with some of the fears of roundabouts. Every year I bring up tires and I think that it is very important that we look at our tires every week. At Ohio Bike Week I took a look at rear tires in Margaretville’s parking lot and it was not good. It did not matter if it was old or new, a bald tire could be found. If the owner was there I had a talk with them and most did not know it was in that shape. Don’t tell me you have a new one at home, just get it put on. Please check those tires and have a safe ride. Starting July 1st , Motorcycle Ohio will be able to offer the BRC-2 as a skills waiver class. This means riders with a permit will be able to take the class and earn their endorsement. This is a one day class and it will help get riders that have been riding for years on a permit take one day and show they know how to ride and get their endorsement. If you have any questions please contact MO call 1-800-83RIDER and www.motorcycle.ohio.gov. Last of all I would like to thank Shanton Wilson for writing a great article in June’s Thunder Roads Ohio magazine on the 2015 Awareness Rally with some great pictures. If you did not read it, go back and check it out or see it online at www.thunderroadsohio.com. Also, a big thank you to Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine for getting the Legislative and Safety and Education information to our Ohio riders. Great Job!! CMA Use It Or Pay The Consequences When it comes to riding a motorcycle, or driving a cager for that matter, there is a vital element necessary to keep that motor running. It’s the oil in the crankcase. Without that oil in the crankcase your scoot won’t run long. Oh sure, I’ve see those commercials where oil is put into an engine – then drained – and the engine is started and it just seems to run forever. Now I’m not disputing the oil manufacturer’s claims to the validity of their advertisement, but common sense tells me that without oil in the crankcase the heat buildup caused by friction of moving metal parts moving over each other will only allow that engine to survive so long. A nice looking ride that won’t run is just that, a nice looking ride. A nice looking ride that won’t run may be a subject of great discussion, but in that discussion there is probably very little satisfaction. After all, don’t we gain our satisfaction from straddling that scoot and experiencing the ride? There’s a huge difference sitting on that scoot and enjoying the air flowing passed you at 50 miles per hour as you ride the country back roads, and the air flowing passed you at 4 miles per hour as it comes around the corner of a building because the engine won’t start. I trust you get the picture. Our spiritual walk is much the same. In Ephesians 6 we read about putting on the whole armor of God. There seems to be one item that is often overlooked in its usefulness and power. That is our Sword, or the Word of God, or the Bible. All the other armor mentioned is mainly defensive type of armor. Although the Sword, Bible, is a defensive type of armor, it should be considered an offensive armor as well. Matthew 4:1-11, “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on 18

bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:“‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.” NIV In this passage Jesus not only defended Himself but used scripture to defeat Satan at his own game. This should be an inspiration to us. As Satan tries to side track us in our walk with Christ, reach for that can of oil called the Bible. Then begin pouring it into your crankcase by reading and studying it. Then allow its power to defeat Satan at his own game just as Christ did. As in the situation from Matthew 4, Satan will leave because he cannot fight against God or God’s Word, the Bible. Trust in the Power of God’s Word just like Jesus did. The 75th Anniversary Edition of the World’s Largest Rally “An Introduction, by Billy Gordon, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor”. I n the B eginning Back in the late 1800's, Sturgis was a Wild West town in South Dakota. The area attracted trappers, traders and dirt farmers searching for a new way of life on the American frontier. There was a treaty with the Indians in 1868, at Fort Laramie, now Wyoming. This was an attempt to temper down skirmishes occurring, mostly between the 1860's and the 1870's. In 1876, The City of Sturgis was founded in South Dakota, outside a Cavalry Post called Fort Meade. The post was across from Bear Butte Mountain, a sacred spot where Indians held summer conventions. Bear Figure 1 Billy Gordon 1989 Butte and Fort Meade were both across from what is now, The Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground. The first military commander of Fort Meade was Major Samuel D. Sturgis. He had a son, Lieutenant J.G. Sturgis. The name Sturgis was first given to a small village established outside of Fort Meade. 1876 was a volatile year. Gold was discovered in the nearby town of Deadwood, and thousands flocked to the area. In 1876, Lieutenant J.G. Sturgis died at Custer's last stand. Also that year, Wild Bill Hickok was shot from behind, and killed, in a Deadwood bar poker game, holding what's now called, "The Dead Man's Hand," (aces and eights). These were times of stage coaches, wild Indians and gunfighters. While much of the East Coast was recovering from the Civil War, the Gold Rush continued attracting many to the Sturgis area. With the influx of so many people, open ranges and Indian territories were encroached on, lands were inhabited, reclaimed, or in dispute with mining companies and gold diggers. By the turn of the century around 1900, the first two-wheeled, motorized, machines were invented. American ingenuity created another way to get around on primitive paths, gravel roads, and open ranges. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles both manufactured gas powered two-wheeled vehicles for the public. By the 1930's, small groups of motorcycle enthusiasts were getting together socially, around the country. Some of the first enthusiasts held Sunday outings and picnics. This would sometimes include a race, or game. They got together primarily in the name of fun, while helping one another maintain their bikes, find parts, and share know-how. It wasn't like you could call a tow truck, and stop at the nearest service station, or motorcycle shop. Roads were primitive, if there were any at all. People were discovering that motorcycles were more durable than cars, with less moving parts. The R ally is B orn In 1936, a guy named Clarence Hoel, also known as "Pappy," obtained an Indian Motorcycle, one of the first in the Sturgis area. Around there, he was the first to use his bike for herding cattle and running errands. He'd been in the ice business, but business slowed due to the invention of refrigeration. So Pappy tried to open a motorcycle franchise. Although Harley-Davidson turned him down, he was awarded an Indian Motorcycle franchise. Starting with one bike in his garage, he worked hard with the help of his wife, Pearl Hoel. She was essential to the success of the business. Pappy and motorcyclist friends got together calling themselves, "The Jack Pine Gypsies." They cleaned up the old ½ mile horse track at the Mead County Fairgrounds in Sturgis and held the first, "Field Day." There were dirt track competitions, stunts and various activities. Pappy Hoel did a stunt, racing his Indian Motorcycle through a burning barricade, a tradition that continued for several years. *There are various accounts of how they got the name, "Jack Pine Gypsies." Pappy's wife, Pearl recounts, "We were on a motorcycle outing with friends in the Black Hills around a bunch of jack pine trees when a tourist driving by said, "What do you call your group? You look like a bunch of Gypsies!" In Rapid City, South Dakota, there was a Harley-Davidson dealer who put the word out about the Field Day, resulting in 20 to 30 bikes. It was the 20

start of a nice rivalry between Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle riders in the area. As more locals showed up, the event was held the next year and a few local businesses got involved. In 1939, business owners started promoting the rally as the Black Hills Motor Classic (BHMC). They received the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) Safety Award, and the AMA helped promote the event. The business owners in town added a parade and additional advertising. With the sanctioning of the AMA, word got out around the country and the little rally in Sturgis continued to grow. Occurring annually in the 2nd week of August, by the 1940's, participants were attending from as far as Florida, California, Michigan, New York, New Mexico, Canada, even Maine. Motorcycle rallies had come of age, sprouting up around the USA. Places like: Laconia, New Hampshire and Daytona Beach, Florida, were holding successful races and rallies that have continued to this day. There were a few European rallies and races, too. One major difference was, the motorcycles were obviously European bikes, like Triumph and BSA. Nowhere in the world possessed riding locations with the geological diversity, and historical attractions, as found in the Sturgis area. World War II caused the rally to shut down for a couple of years, but things picked back up by the 1950's. Both Indian and Harley-Davidson manufacturers survived The Great Depression, two World Wars, and competition from overseas manufacturers. Still, the Sturgis rally kept growing in attendance and size. After a while, the activities were expanded to hill climbs, motocross, flat track races, and gettogethers. A parade, and even a Black Hills Motor Classic Queen, were added. The races, and the hill climbs remained the main attractions, drawing competitors from all over the country. Newspapers ran stories like, "Milwaukee Boy Runs Away with Lot Prize Money," and "Rapid City Speed Demon Meets his Equal Johnny Spiegelhoff." The races and surrounding activities steadily gained recognition. By 1960, a little over 700 people gathered in Sturgis for the rally. Because of the logistics of traveling to South Dakota and the expense of owning a motorcycle, most were local spectators. Attendance consisted of upper-class family tourists, racers, locals, and a few 1%ers. A small faction were called, "1%ers," or sometimes "Outlaw Bikers," because 99% of motorcycle enthusiasts participated in AMA sanctioned events, while 1% operated outside their laws and rules. 1% of the bikers held their own events where, when, and how they wanted. In the 1960's, our country underwent social and societal revelations compounded by the Viet Nam War, Hippie demonstrations, drugs, and freedom issues. The Sturgis Rally continued to grow, and in 1965, a local Banker convinced the City of Sturgis to allow free motorcycle parking on Main Street. One entire block of Main Street became totally dedicated to motorcycle parking. The next year the event was extended to 5 days. By the end of the 1960's, there was a little over 2000 in attendance and several blocks along Main Street were full of motorcycles. After filling up both sides of the street with motorcycle parking, Sturgis started parking up the middle of the street, in two more rows. A new movie named, Easy Rider, was released in July of 1969. It starred Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson. The film captured the imagination of the public and a new generation of youth. The controversial story foretold youthful independence and freedom. The film pushed the public's nerve button on the subject of freedom, fun, what was legal, and what was racist. Youth related to the films' journey. The movie's characters explored fun with motorcycles, drugs, and pushed the boundaries of risky behavior. Back in Sturgis, the rally continued attracting thousands more every year. By 1979, complaints and legitimate concerns were voiced about how to handle the event. Clashes between public opinion, local media reports, city officials and the Sheriff's department, exacerbated the situation.

The Birth of the Chip Around 1982, some rolling hill-like pastures just up the road from the city park became a place many fun loving bikers could go. It was off the radar of locals and police. City officials were happy to get, what some called, "The Riffraff," out of downtown Sturgis, and the park. The "Buffalo Chip Picnic" was born. The get-together was organized; with bands, biker games, and friends gathered in fun. Rod Woodruff, a local attorney, lived and worked in the Sturgis vicinity. He helped some of those involved in the Buffalo Chip Picnic. The next year he reorganized the happening as "The Buffalo Chip Campground." We call him, "Woody." To this day he is Commanderin-Chief of, "The Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground." He's quoted as saying, "In the beginning it was just a field party with less than 200 people." A welcome place for motorcyclists, more and more continued camping. Being an attorney helped Woody manage the trials, tribulations, regulations, and many responsibilities associated with a motorcycle rally and campgrounds. He offered a recurrent place to camp, party, listen to music and "crash." Crash meaning sleep, no pun intended. Open 24 hours during the rally, the visiting travelers held events, rode loud bikes, and had a great time. They could have their own campsite, fire pit, tent space, parking, rock out or even, just relax. There was fun in them there hills! Like a wild west brand of liberty: somewhat akin to the early towns and villages of the area. In the beginning, there wasn't electricity, hot or cold showers, or even running water. Virtually no shade, trees, or amenities. It didn't seem to matter. In spite of this, The Buffalo Chip Campground continued to thrive. Complete with all the characteristics of a typical South Dakota summer. Every August you could expect at least one or two days of wind, thunderstorms, occasional hail, and sometimes temperature swings from rather cool at night, to rather hot in the day. Nevertheless, motorcyclists are accustomed to being out in the elements. The Buffalo Chip Campground was a place people loved to go, seeking life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

“The 1990 Buffalo Chip Concert Series – Sturgis 50th Anniversary” The 1990 Buffalo Chip Concert Series was Night after night entertainment; the likes of Marshall Tucker, Doobie Brothers, Steppenwolf, Sam Kinison, and Wolfman Jack, thrilled thousands crowded in front of the stage. Motorcyclists, with their bikes by their side, revved their engines in applause. The motorcycle, like one of the family, had expressed its appreciation. From our campsite was a good view of the backstage area. Each day and every night, tractor-trailers came and went. Road crews wrestled stage gear, road cases, and instruments. Everything traveled up a 40 foot ramp to the back of the stage. Stage hands meticulously unpacked and set everything up, only to break it down, repack and load out in the wee hours of the morning. We saw musicians arriving in tour buses, some in rental cars, others had to be picked up from the airport in Rapid City. It took time to navigate through the masses. Swarms of press held nightly interviews in back of the stage. A line of traffic attending the Chip concerts stretched all the way back to town. Inside the Chip, no one had ever encountered anything like this! A ginormous sea of motorcyclists in full party mode, waiting in front of the stage. The Buffalo Chip Campground was a city unto itself. One afternoon, I went over to the office to see if the schedule was posted. The only thing in there was a couch, desk, chair, and phone line strung through the door. The Stage Manager and Woody walked in. Then, ironically on the peak day of a full moon, Wolfman Jack arrives. He's well known as the most famous voice in radio, Midnight Special TV Host, a self-portrayed acting role in the George Lucas movie American Graffiti, and much more. He arrived with his producer/engineer for over 20 years, Lonnie Napier. Woody welcomed Wolfman Jack to the Chip. He was a ball of energy, excited to be there and said, "OK, Let's get going, where's the radio station?" They talked, and a little while later, Woody asked me to show him where the Chip Radio Station was. Buffalo Chip had a small band station that could broadcast to the surrounding campers. Wolfman Jack could visit any radio station in the area, but first he wanted to go on the Chip's radio station. I showed him over to Chip's station and he 22

asked me to go on the air with him. It was a hoot! We never planned anything. I got a tremendous thrill from it. Afterwards, he said, "Where's your camp? Let's go over there." I said, "It's just over that hill. I'll go grab my bike and show ya." When I got back, he jumped on the bike and said, "OK, let's GO!" He took up the whole back seat and half the front, but we managed. We traveled a short distance to our campsite. When we arrived, a few band members were sitting around amazed to see us pull up. They knew who was there. We all sat around our lean-to-tent & RV campsite, and had a powwow. It seemed so surreal. We were totally enthralled and felt right at home. Wolfman Jack sat there telling us stories about Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. A while later he invited me out to a radio station in the City of Deadwood for another interview. We went on the air, talked about the Buffalo Chip concerts and all the fun going on. After getting back to the camp, I went to see if the schedule was posted. Some of the guys in the band said, "Hey, they want us to go on stage tonight, and back up Wolfman Jack for a song!" When Wolfman Jack came out on the stage, everyone was captivated by, what can only be described as a magical and historical happening. It turned into an entire set, and the stage manager scheduled us to go back on together the next night. What a special time, and a highlight of my life. Wolfman Jack promised he'd see me at the 75th Anniversary of the Sturgis Rally, but passed away in 1995. There's no doubt he'll be there in spirit. The Chip has since named the main stage, "The Wolfman Jack Stage” and one of the other stages, "The Sam Kinison Stage."

Hank Williams Jr. to Headline at the Broken Spoke Campground Friday, August 7th Gates Open 4pm In celebration of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally’s 75th anniversary, the legendary Hank Williams Jr. – the man whose destiny called him to the stage – will perform LIVE at the Broken Spoke Campground beneath the bountiful stars. The only son of Hank Williams, the longgone and lonesome singer whose brief life transformed country music, “Bocephus” (a nickname from his father) made his Grand Ole Opry debut at 11, singing his father’s “Loveside Blues.” His style and vocals mimicked the elder Williams’ in a haunting way. That shadow grew darker as Hank Jr. entered his 20s. The fans who came to see him on the road wanted, and expected, him to do his father’s songs, in his father’s way. But Bocephus yearned to explore the emerging fusion of country, blues and rock as seen in the music of Waylon Jennings and the Marshall Tucker Band. After a near-death fall at Montana’s Ajax Mountain, Bocephus emerged disfigured, wounded and, somehow, inspired. For Hank Jr., everything changed with that 1975 accident. The music world caught on to those changes around 1979, the year he released his first million-selling album, “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound,” along with his autobiography, Living Proof. In the early 1980s, Henk Jr. catapulted to full-on superstar status with major hits including “Texas Women,” “Dixie On My Mind,” “All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down),” and in 1984, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight.” THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

In 1987, Hank Jr. won his first of five countrymusic entertainer-of-the-year awards, and the two albums released that year – “Hank Live” and “Born To Boogie” – were platinum sellers. “Born To Boogie” was the CMA’s album of the year in 1988, and that same year Hank Jr. won the CMA and ACM’s top entertainer prize. Hank’s star rose far beyond the country world in 1989, when ABC’s Monday Night Football had him rework “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” into a theme song to be played before each Monday’s game. Two years later, the song won the first of four straight Emmy Awards, and Hank Jr. would be the singing voice of Monday Night Football for 22 years. Broken Spoke Campground is proud to present Hank Williams Jr. to attendees of the 2015 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Tickets are available NOW at b rokenspoke. com and through Tickets300 at (866) 300-8300. PRESENTED BY GEICO INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by GEICO Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!

The Way it Works

State and Stop Prizes

E

E

ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home.

The Winners

I

f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to "claim" their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn't able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead.

Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the "drawing" - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That's the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! 40

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in's. •

Some prize drawings are specific to only checkin's for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in's season long. •

ALL CHECK-IN's remain in the system for end of the season prizes! •

Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in's per month (not counting bonuses).

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

BONUS Check-in´s! The 2015 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing. It's really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

Y

ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www. ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. We have all new cards for 2015. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there.

Just Get Out and RIDE!

W

e want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

Reader's Ride Here is a great bike from Tim Cosimano. It's a 1983 HD FXEF Shovelhead that Tim has owned for about four years. He has added some chrome and most recently rebuilt the top end of this shovel. Besides the great paint, that is about 14 years old, this bike features a belt driven primary and secondary. Pretty rare for this bike. Everybody have a happy and safe July 4th. Please take this opportunity to remember our Veterans.

650 MILES By Denise Kennedy, TRO Contributor

I am sure that many of us at one time or another have had our share of lengthy rides whether it be heading to Sturgis, Daytona, Laconia, an afternoon to Hocking Hills or perhaps the Lake Erie Circle Tour. But in most instances those rides are completed on a larger, more comfortable motorcycle. So for a moment imagine completing a 650 mile ride/race around Lake Erie in less than 12 hours on a 250 cc motorcycle.

His Rebel's only modification was an additional gravity 4 gallon gas tank. The course runs along the south shore of Lake Erie crossing into Canada at Windsor along the northern shore of the lake crossing back into the States at Niagara Falls. Unfortunately Ray came up a bit short...three minutes to be exact. He won his class having completed the 650 miles in 10 hrs 38 minutes averaging 62+ mph. How do you average 62+ mph on a 250? Seems a lot of drafting behind larger vehicles, that larger gas tank capacity and one gas stop from hell which ultimately cost him the overall title.

Meet Ray Meyers of Eastlake, Ohio. Ray retired after many years of owning and operating Meyers Fire Protection. Most retirees take it easy in their Golden Years, but 68 year old "Gray Ray" as his friends call him takes easy to a new level.

Ray regularly rides for pleasure piloting a 2007 Yamaha FJR recently making a 3000 mile - eight state trek with about 50 riders from the FJR Riders Group.. He races a 300cc Kawasaki Ninja on a regular basis and teaches beginner race students at a local road course. Ray has not yet decided if he will give The Loop another shot next year but you will see him for sure taking it easy wherever the roads take him.

Ray became interested in the Lake Erie Loop several years ago originally competing on a Kawasaki BN125 - 125 cc motorcycle winning his class in 2013 and 2014 doing so in 12 hrs 30 minutes and 11 hrs 33 minutes respectively. For 2015 however he decided to compete in a Vintage Class (a Class for motorcycles 30 years old or older) and rode a single carb 1985 Honda Rebel. Vintage bikes must be street models. 64

I am a proud member of a local motorcycle club called RASKULLS. We are a great group of people from all

professions, but we all have a lot of things in common, we love to ride our motorcycles, have fun, and most important, help kids. We put on a benefit poker run every year to raise money to help kids from right here in the Great Miami Valley Area. We have helped lots of wonderful children for the last few years, with clothes, shoes, brand new beds, toys at Christmas time, and meals for the kids and their parents. Every year our ride grows and we’re able to help more wonderful children. Yes, we are a motorcycle club and bikers but like most motorcycle clubs we try to improve and build a better tomorrow. Children are our world’s future and we all need to work together to guide and mold children’s minds, so they have the want and desire to keep fighting to make this a safe, happy environment for future generations. If we fill just one child’s mind with positive thoughts for the future and about our past it makes it all worth it. Our club the RASKULLS is a nonprofit Charitable Incorporation {501(C)(3)}. Thanks to all the bikers from around the Miami Valley who participate with us on our poker runs, and the wonderful businesses from around the area who donate awesome prizes for door prizes and raffle prizes. They are the ones who make this possible. So I am asking you to please, if you have the time to come ride with us, bring your friends and come make new ones. Let’s ride to help kids, our future, and theirs. RASKULLS "Ride for the Children" 4th Annual Poker Run, July 11, 2015.(Rain Date July 12, 2015). Ride starts and ends at the Upper Deck Tavern, 2651 Blanchard Ave. Moraine Ohio 45439. The ride goes down Main Street in Downtown Dayton, which is quite a spectacular sight. There are wonderful places we stop to wet our whistles. The ride itself this year is 92 miles long and registration starts at 9:30 am. Kickstands go up at 11:00 am and the cost is only $15.00 for the rider and $10.00 for passengers. Food is served during the after party where door prizes will be handed out and awesome music provided by Dirtybone. I thank all the people who help make this a fun, safe, and caring even. Remember, shiny side up and stay safe out there all my friends and friends I have yet to meet. Special Thanks to Derek Smith and Thunder Roads Magazine for all their help promoting this awesome event every year.

s I was riding home from San Jose after working there all day, it was lane spitting time of day as rush splined shaft. Again hour was unavoidable. It was a particularly rough this brings the shifter commute that day and I ended up splitting lanes all the way further out from the back to Sacramento. Now I have a habit of covering my side of the bike for rear break as I ride like this just so I have the jump on any more comfortable cage drivers that are not paying attention there is no wasted access and leaves you time hitting the brake. By the time I got home the muscle with a much cleaner on the front of my shin was sore from holding my toe up finish than if you just for 3 hours. A few days later, Dave the owner of E-Z Brake put a chrome cap over contacted TRM NorCal and I admit that after checking out the end of the spline. his web site (www.E-Zbrake.com) I thought that I might Each product comes with easy to follow installation instructions have found the solution to my shin problem. Think about it, the brake position on Harley-Davidson touring bikes has room for improvement. Personally, I noticed the difference immediately after installing the E-Z Brake on my bike. Wow! The E-Z Brake moves the brake pedal forward a bit and down closer to the floor board. Now I no longer have to pick my foot up and move it from under the pedal to apply the brake; now it is just a short lift of my toe and I am there. There is more free space for your foot on the floor board and also will reduce reaction time in a must-stop situation. that are also available at As a bonus the chrome finish is immaculate and looks way www.E-Zbrake.com . better on my bike, huge improvement. Now we did not stop there - on the other side of the bike they have a fix there as well. E-Z Shifter extending the front shifter more over the floor board while the rear shifter arm is longer and flatter. This allows the rear shifter to be set lower and further back out of the way of your foot unless you want it and the narrow shift lever allows it to slide between the floorboard and the primary so you do not have to pick your foot up completely off the floor board to reach it with your heel. I like to ride without the heel shifter, they have a slick set up for that as well with a chrome spacer that is spring loaded to bring the front shift leaver out to the outside of the

PIRELLI x VIBRAZIONI DUCATI SCRAMBLER Geoff Baldwin, ReturnofTheCafeRacers.com Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor Two greats in Italian motorcycling, Pirelli and Ducati have collaborated to produce one of the most radical Scrambler conversions we've seen since the bikes release (aside from the Deus Milano Spongebob Squarepants version). Working with Italian custom furniture and motorcycle makers 'Vibrazioni Art Design', they've created a rough and ready Scrambler touting Vibraziono's unmistakable recycled aesthetic. Similar in looks to Vibraziono's CB750 the 'SC-Rumble' Scrambler utilises reclaimed materials for it's bodywork while retaining Ducati's original running gear, but best of all they've added those high pipes everyone's been crying out for! Pirelli's MT60 RS was Ducati's tyre of choice for their new Scrambler. The super-moto/recreation style pattern of the MT60 RS delivers great handling on asphalt and loose surfaces where the Scrambler is at home. On the SC-Rumble the tyres have been mounted to solid, blacked out rims and using classic Pirelli yellow the lettering on the walls of the tyres has been highlighted. As an additional nod to Pirellis involvement in the build a set of rubber tank inserts with the MT60 RS tread pattern and Scrambler emblems laser cut into them were also added. Using their signature style Vibrazioni fashioned the SC Rumbles bodywork from reclaimed street signs and aluminium sheeting. Each piece was hand beaten prior to welding or riveting them together to form the monocoque style bodywork. The unique front fairing was also made from aluminium sheet to house the smoked lens LED Scrambler headlight along with the radiator surrounds and rear side panels. To finish the body parts off the original sign paint was sanded back to allow for welding and left raw using only a clear coat of paint to protect them from the elements.

G one B ut No F unds A trend that I’ve noticed for some time now that drives me totally batty is begging for money on social media. I fully understand that is some instances there is a real need. Perhaps a home fire where someone lost everything, and needs some temporary help to get them along until insurance picks up the tab. But far too often I am seeing people on Social Media with these “GoFundMe” accounts begging for money from everything from their pet needing an operation, to help pay for my broke down motorcycle. This is absurd. It is only a slightly more honorable form of begging than standing on the side of the road with a cardboard sign. Please, STOP it. I feel our society has become weak and non self sufficient. If I’m arguing with my neighbor I’ll call the police. After all, they are like calling the teacher to solve my problems. No they aren’t. Their job is to enforce the laws set by our legislature, not act like your mother to be used to try and prove you are right, or punish your little brother. If my washing machine breaks I’ll just start a contribution page and social media will bail me out. It’s Pathetic. How about you stop spending all your paycheck every week and put back $10 or $25 bucks a week as a buffer? This one chick just posted on a Local Garage Sale Facebook site last night a “GoFundMe” because she says she needs an ankle surgery that insurance won’t pay for. What? Insurance will typically pay for a surgery if it is actually necessary. She says she’s 24 years old, unemployed and needs to be able to chase after her THREE kids. No mention of Baby Daddies paying any bills. Good Lord people! Folks often speak highly of the Motorcycle community on how much we give, and that is 100% true. I have never in my life met a segment of society like the Biker Community so willing to jump to a cause. A Poker Run, a Benefit, a contribution of time, food and money. But I feel you are being taken advantage of. I once hosted a Poker Run for a lady at a bar we ran. She wasn’t even a known member of the Motorcycle Community. I 78

told her time and time again that it is the Families duty to push attendance, bring food, etc. When the day came for the run, not one person, family member or otherwise even showed up. We cancelled the run. People are under the impression the bar will handle all of the details, and just hand them a wad of cash at the end of the day. It doesn’t work that way. I just recently witnessed on social media a local “Benefit” for a young adult who died of a drug overdose. The people in attendance weren’t even Bikers, but a local Biker Bar offered their business for the benefit. The Cops were called in force no less than three times for fighting. How ridiculous and disgusting is that? Fighting at a Benefit for a fallen friend, nothing but punks. Just last weekend a couple, both members of a separate club went down in a terrible accident. I would expect that their clubs would want to step up and do something to help them along, if and when they needed it. But literally not even 48 hours after the accident a “GoFundMe” was started to raise money for them. That was extremely premature and tacky when they were still laying in their hospital beds, one of which the outcome of their life was still in question. Another issue with this has come up in

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

"I feel our society has become weak and non self sufficient." the past in Club Life. When a club brother passes, it’s assumed that since he partied his money away for 30 years that the club he is a member of will cover his last expenses. Even when he is a member of a large club, two or three funerals a year can create a huge financial burden on any club. It’s time that you all start taking responsibility for your own life and Death. Those television and radio commercials you tune out when they come on, with some old actor talking about Death Benefit Insurance Policies, as little as $10 a month, yes you know the ones, call them. They literally have no prerequisites, no medical exams, no qualifying, and they typically will pay out $10K or more depending on the policy you choose. I’m not just talking to Club Members, I’m talking to every one of you that is going to die someday, or you have grown kids with no job and no initiative. You are going to bury them if they die, not us. It’s funny because every single one of us know that OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

we will all die with 100% certainty, yet you do nothing to prepare. You do nothing to eliminate the burden of the very people you love, family, friends, or Club. You instead make every club run, you always have smoke or your party of choice, you usually have fuel in your bike, but you have zero means to bury yourself.

for your own life and death. Cut out that one 12 Pack a month, or even attending that one Poker Run a month where you spend $25 Bucks to bury someone else, when you can’t even bury yourself. Be Gone But Not Forgotten… not Gone But No Funds! I appreciate the life, and I appreciate you taking the time to read the column! My Road Name is “Tabasco”, and I approve this message! Keep it REAL! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

Disclaimer: The author of this column has no affiliation with, nor makes any claim of representation of The McIlhenny Company, “Tabasco Brand Pepper Sauce”, or their subsidiaries, products or services.

I’d rather attend a “Celebration of Life” party for a fallen friend or Brother than a “Benefit” to hand you money. Any decent bar in the Motorcycle Community can handle a Flyer, a Pot Luck, and even cover a Band knowing they will have extra business on the day of a Celebration for a fallen Brother or Sister. Unless you are an established Charity Organization that hosts a large Annual Ride or Poker Run to benefit a Charity Cause, you really shouldn’t run an annual Poker Run for a Family member past a few years. I fully comprehend that the pain of your loss will be with you forever, but the real truth is that society has a C-Span attention Span. In other words society in general becomes calloused to the loss, and people stop attending. Of course there is no shortage of the next Poker Run or “Benefit” all vying for the next “donation”. I applaud the Biker Community on your generous willingness to help people. So step up and take responsibility

BUCKEYE FIREARMS BY B. GIL HORMAN, NRA REPORT Six Essential Drills for Concealed Carry 1.

Grip: Water Bottle drill

One student should face a target at roughly 3 yards with firearm presented and ready to dry fire. As the student dry fires, I intermittently use an empty water bottle to lightly tap the bottom of the fire i.e. under the slide immediately after the trigger is pulled (see image). Not only does this work to simulate recoil, but it also takes students by surprise. This is the best time to analyze grip.

Shooting drills are a pistol instructors’ greatest ally. Often undervalued, these simple exercises strengthen students understanding of concealed carry concepts as well as basic shooting principles. Over the course of teaching concealed carry and pistol classes, I’ve tested out my fair share of drills. While some fell short of expectations, six drills in particular always make their way into my curriculum. When conducting these exercises, observe all gun safety rules.

consistently control, it’s imperative that those that intend to concealed carry are able to achieve a consistent grip on their pistols. The Water Bottle drill is a dry fire activity designed to show flaws in grip before hitting the range or the streets.

Though we teach grip in introductory courses, it is the one area I see consistently overlooked. As it is the one aspect of shooting we can

A firm grip will produce little movement when the pistol is struck. If the firearm bounces around in the students’ hand, then feedback should be given and their grip tweaked until no movement occurs.

required. Ensure all weapons are clear and verified by another student. Get into preferred shooting position. Next, place a snap cap or coin (quarters work best) on the slide towards the nose of the gun. Pull the trigger. If thesnap cap or coin is still resting on top of the handgun, then a straight and fluid pull was achieved. If the coin or cap tumbles to the floor, well then it’s time to work on eliminating the jerk. 3. Accuracy: Natural Aiming Area

By balancing a bullet, snap cap, coin or other small object on the slide of the gun can reveal a jerky trigger pull. (Photo: Jacki Billings)

Jerking the trigger causes shots to land outside of the intended target. When concealed carrying, we always want our shots to land on target so as not to hit innocent bystanders so it’s imperative that we train and we teach good trigger control. My favorite drill to demonstrate proper trigger control is called The Balancing Act. I prefer to first demonstrate this technique prior to turning it over to the students to practice. For this exercises, an unloaded pistol is

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

The Natural Aim Area drill is best done with a laser training system. It has shooters aim, then close their eyes while moving off target, only to try to find their point of aim again while blind. Can be done in conjunction with Balancing act drill for added challenge. (Photo: Jacki Billings) Again, like trigger control, accuracy is imperative

when concealed carrying. We don’t want to hurt innocent people so we must stay on target when we draw and fire. The preferred drill for improving accuracy is the “Natural Aiming Area” exercise. When conducting this one in class, I prefer to have laser trainers ready for student use. These give instant feedback and I find students respond well to them. If laser trainers can’t be used, have students dry fire with their handguns. Before dry firing, ensure the firearm is clear and empty. Students should face a target 3-5 yards away. For this drill the perfect target is usually a light switch or doorknob. The student should present the gun and then close his or her eyes. Have the student draw a figure eight with the gun. When using a laser system, have the student pull the trigger and then open their eyes. Evaluate where the laser landed in relation to the target. When dry firing, students may still pull the trigger but should focus on where their sights are aligned and where the firearm is pointed. This is not about precision, but about accuracy. If the student is lined up on the

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

83

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Six Essential Drills for Concealed Carry (continued from p.85) doorknob or light switch then no need to alter anything; however, if the student is off target, adjust stance and grip until the exercise can be accomplished correctly. 4. Presentation of firearm: Drawing from concealment at ‘threat’

expanse of holsters in all sizes and varieties. Instead of tossing them, they sit in a large bin that I pull out just for concealed carry classes. Students get to pilfer through, choose one and holster up. All firearms are unloaded and verified at this point and once checked, firearms go in the holsters. Students are required to adequately conceal their pistols meaning, no printing. Then I have them mill about the rear of the classroom. I give them a few seconds to calm down, get comfortable carrying, and then I call “Threat!” At threat, they must present the firearm at one of the targets on the wall. Students should hold this position until evaluated by the instructor.

BY JACKI BILLINGS tap themagazine, rack the slide, and pull the trigger. Ensure while the student is handling the firearm, they are keeping it in a safe direction at all times. There’s nothing fancy here with this exercise; but it’s a good one to get students comfortable with clearing their own malfunctions and also familiarizing them with assessing problems.

When we conduct this drill, we’ve already run through the previously mentioned exercises. Students should have a good grasp on grip at this point, so instructors shouldn’t focus exclusively on that aspect. Instead, the focus should be on ensuring students are able to draw successfully from concealment and do so safely, i.e. not sweeping.

This sounds like an obvious drill, but you’d be surprised at the amount of concealed carry classes that don’t actually teach how to draw from concealment. Liabilities play a large part in some facilities opting not to teach this, but with inert training aides and laser systems there’s no reason to sit this one out. I’ve found students respond well to the practice and let’s face it; they’re in class to learn how to conceal. Drilling drawing from concealment, like this IWB draw, can help identify problematic clothing/holsters/rigs for concealed carry. (Photo: Jacki Billings) Having explored the concealed carry world largely on my own, I have accumulated a vast

This exercise is most useful to students because it gives them the opportunity to put what they are learning to practice and evaluate if the clothes their wearing will work for concealed carry. It’s also a great opportunity for students to get an initial opinion on what kind of holster might work best for them. 5. Malfunction: Tap, Rack, Pull “Tap, Rack, Pull” doesn’t sound that exciting but it is a drill I think every instructor should employ in class. When things go wrong, they tend to go terribly wrong and self-defense situations are not exempt. This drill is simple. Call students up one a time and use snap caps to introduce a “failure” in the student’s firearm. The student must then Safety warning: Jacki Billings is a certified NRA instructor. Any methods or information described in this article is intended to be put into practice only by serious gun-owners with proper training.

6. Awareness and assessment: Scan and Assess drill The scan and assess drill should be performed both standing and kneeling. (Photo: Jacki Billings) Tunnel vision is a physiological reaction to adrenaline hitting the system. The dangers associated with this reaction is that concealed carriers may be so

focused on the target ahead, that they might miss the bad guy creeping up from the side. Safe for dry fire or live fire, the very versatile “Scan and Assess” drillpromotes awareness in students. For this drill, students will fire three shots, look left and right, then reengage the target with three more shots. To spice this drill up further, you can require students to fire, scan, and then change positions before firing again. On the range, instructors can also throw some colored paper into the mix and require that the first set of shots land on one color while the second round must land on a different color. This activity is good to run both in the classroom and on the range. I suggest doing both to better prepare students. Final Thoughts Though we can’t control every aspect of concealed carry and defensive scenarios, we can give our students a fighting chance with preparation. Simple drills designed to improve grip, trigger control, accuracy, drawing and awareness produce well-rounded concealed carriers and that’s whom I want on my side.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... You Must be Single

Angry Wife An angry wife was complaining about her husband spending all his free time in a bar, so one night he took her along with him. "What'll you have?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know. The same as you I suppose," she replied. So, the husband ordered a couple of Jack Daniel's and threw his down in one shot. His wife watched him, then took a sip from her glass and immediately spat it out. "Yuck, that's TERRIBLE!" she spluttered. "I don't know how you can drink this stuff!" "Well, there you go," cried the husband. "And you think I'm out enjoying myself every night!" My Brother is an Idiot A woman is in an accident while she's pregnant. While in a comma she has twins (a boy & a girl). When she woke up she asked the doctor were her baby was. The doctor said she had twins but her brother named them. She replied,"My brother is an idiot I wonder what names he gave them. Anyway what did he name the girl?" "Denise", replied the doctor. That's not so bad."What about the boy", she finally asked. "Denephew"

A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected: A halfgallon of 2% milk, A carton of eggs, A quart of orange juice, A head of romaine lettuce, A 2 lb. can of coffee, And a 1 lb. package of bacon. As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, "You must be single." The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was Intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped off the drunk to her marital status. Curiosity getting the better of her, she said "Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct, but how on earth did you know that?" The drunk replied, "Cause you're ugly." Painless A new dentist set up in a small town and quickly acquired a reputation of being the latest kind of "Painless" dentist. But a local chap quicky disputed this. "He's a fake ! " he told his mates. "He's not painless at all. When he stuck his finger in my mouth I bit him - and he yelled like anyone else.

I didn't know you had it in you."The first biker responds, "Well, I guess it was the right thing to do - after all, I was married to her for 40 years."
