FROM THE PUBLISHER As we enter the month of June, it’s clear that riding season is not only upon us – it’s full throttle, roaring down on us. Bike Nights are just hitting their stride and the rides are just getting going, but along our North Coast – Ohio Bike Week kicks off the summer with ten days of entertainment, great riding, and comradery as riders from across the Midwest descend upon Sandusky. Ohio Bike Week marks the real start of our major outdoor event season which runs all the way through the AMA Pro Hill climbs in Oregonia in October here in Ohio and the Lone Star Rally in Galveston, Texas nationally. From OBW ‘til the Lone Star Rally, we will log thousands of miles and spend countless night under the stars as we cover events all across Ohio and surrounding areas. Over the last several years we’ve covered more and more events, picking up new ones every year. We drop a few rides and rallies each year as well – sometimes they just aren’t all that they were cracked up to be, and sometimes we are forced to simply accept the fact that we cannot be four places at once. Three, yes – four, not so much. This year we’ve undertaken new endeavors with old friends, such as helping to host the bike and tattoo shows at the 30th Anniversary of the Wetzel Motorcycle Rally. We are also expanding our presence into whole new areas as we commit to more and more racing – including dual sport rides through the woods and the flat track races at Lima. We’ve brought on new folks and even added a few new event trailers and trucks to the mix. In between all the major rallies and rides on the weekends, we plan on hitting more and more Bike Nights. If we were golfers or bowlers, we might have league nights; but we are bikers – so we have Bike Nights. We’ve even added a cool new event trailer designed just for Bike Nights. It includes lights, music, and even a drone that will take pictures from far above! The bottom line is that we plan on being on the road for the next five months. We’ve spent the last several months preparing for an active summer of endless events and now it’s upon us! It’s an exciting time as we can finally really break out of the shop and spend some serious quality time with our extended family – the bikers, riders, and enthusiasts across Ohio – the Midwest – and more. We are heading out to share a beer, trade some stories, and check out your ride. I want to hear about your favorite stops and see what you’ve done to your bike over the winter. I want to know what you think about the new bikes and the new trends that seem to be upon us. And I want to hear what you want to see in this magazine, because at the end of the day – it’s your opinion that really counts. We publish Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine – one of the largest motorcycle magazines anywhere. We have grown through your support and are the product of hundreds of hours spent listening to stories around campfires and trackside. We’ve covered the miles and gone to the rallies, not simply for the patches or to say I was there. We are out and about because it is our job to represent and serve you – the Ohio riding community. I’m not going to tell you what a motorcycle magazine “should be” or brag about who I am or what I’ve done. I’m going to listen to you and help share what I learn. It’s a lot of time and miles, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. And I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to do what I love. If you’re at Ohio Bike Week, the Lima ½ Mile, or any of the other 20-30 events we are headed to this month – stop by and say hi. I’ll be the guy with the black leather top hat – listening and trading my own stories from time to time. Ride Safe and Live Strong!

Buckeye Current head to Pikes Peak for the 100th Anniversary Race To The Clouds Buckeye Current is excited to return to Colorado Springs on June 26th to participate in the 100th anniversary of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), the Race to the Clouds. The PPIHC began in 1916 and is the second oldest motorsports race in America. It takes place on a 12.42 mile course beginning at 9,390 feet and 156 turns later – it ends at the 14,115 foot summit. The race is self-sanctioned and is the most diverse one day motorsports event in the world with everything from Sidecars, Motorcycles, Semi-Trucks, and 1,400+horsepower Electric and Unlimited Racers being able to compete in the same event.

2014, and second in the Electric Modified class of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2015. The team returns to Pikes Peak the hopes of not only placing well in the electric class again, but breaking the overall course record for motorcycles of 9:58. Improvements to last year’s RW-3 racing model include a high-performance cooling system to help avoid thermal limitations, completely custom geometry based on sophisticated computer aided design and analysis, fully redesigned battery pack, and numerous upgrades to the electronic system managing the bike and all of its components.

Buckeye Current is also pleased to announce the return of its veteran rider, Rob “The Bullet” Barber, an eight-year competitor at the Isle of Man TT. Barber has three podium finishes in the TT Zero and the team looks forward to watching him race up Pikes Peak. For more information on the Buckeye Current Team, visit their website Current. ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, We will start with the facts. So far in 2016 we have had 417 crashes, which is 3.4 crashes every day of this riding season, and 11 fatalities. In comparison 2015 had 335 crashes, which is 2.7 crashes every day of that riding season, with 8 fatalities. What can we do? I have looked at all the fatalities trying to find ways to eliminate them. After going to fatal review meetings and reviewing crashes with authorities, we find we need to educate Motorists and Motorcyclists to not be distracted while driving or riding. Let’s talk about distracted driving. It is any activity that you do that takes your attention from the task of operating your vehicle. The cell phone is the most common and to me, this even means hands free, because you still don’t have your mind on what you are doing. To my brothers who are using cell phones on their bikes now, “stop it”. Also adjusting your navigation system is a big distraction. Pull to the side of the road and fix it. The list goes on - reading, grooming, eating and drinking, watching or adjusting any electronical device and talking or having a heated conversation with passengers.

14

Mike Stock

Please show by example and don’t ride or drive distracted. The riding season is now well underway with many of our charity groups and riding groups putting on rides that they want everyone to stay together and in a parade. This is the favorite way to move from one point to another, but not always the safest and legal way to get to that point. First, in most areas you may need a parade permit and an escort. Some groups feel they can use road guards to block traffic to get through an intersection, but this is not legal in the state of Ohio. It also gets us a bad rap from motorists who have to wait. Yes, ABATE of Ohio, Inc. has been working with legislators on a road guard bill to make it legal to road guard in Ohio. Until this gets passed we should try do our rides legal and get a parade permit and escorts or use a route sheet and send everyone to the next check point on their own, obeying all laws. I know this will get a lot of comments so if you want change, join ABATE of Ohio Inc. and you can help get that law passed. Motorcycle Ohio is training motorcyclists all over the state, and they will be for the whole riding season. If you have never taken a class, try to work one in this

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

summer. You will learn something that could save your life. To the rider that rides every summer on a temporary permit and never gets the time to take the three day course, they now have a one day class that you can get your endorsement in one day. If you ride on a temporary permit you have restrictions, and if you get caught not following the rules, your bike can get towed and you will be walking. In my travels around I have seen a lot of Look Twice and Save a Life signs and would like to see more. We have good supply of the yard stompers and have just ordered banner size 3X5 signs. The yard stomper is $10.00 and the banner size is now $35.00. Both of these signs are on corrugated board. This is a proven way to educate motorists that they need to watch out for motorcycles. As many of you know I love riding Ohio roads and have some favorites. If you like the Dragons Tail you would like Ohio route 555 “The Triple Nickle”. Another favorite of mine is Route 9 from the Ohio River north. It ends up being very interesting. Up in the Toledo area where it’s mostly flat we have Route 424 along the Maumee River that has a lot curves and things to do along the way. I hope everyone has a great riding season and that can only happen if we ride alert and defensively. We need to keep our motorcycles in good condition. Do your safety check before every ride. And don’t forget them tires. Check the tread in more than one spot on the tire, and proper air pressure is very important. As we all know the Motorcycle Awareness Rally 2016 was wet and cold. Because of the brave souls that made the run, we made everyone aware that we are BACK. A big thanks to the BIB’s Memorial for their donation, AD Farrow for coffee and donuts, to Jim for getting the products trailer there, for everyone that set up the sign-in area and did the sign-ins, the Columbus Motor Police and the Delaware Sheriff’s department, our key note speaker Councilman Stinziano for braving the weather, Region 9 for a great After Rally Party and for all the hard core bikers for coming out in that weather. CMA

Life’s Ride Plan (Part 2) Through a special partnership between CMA and Hope for the Heart, resources have been put together providing Biblical keys on the top issues we believe bikers face and it is called “Life’s Ride Plan”. Each Life’s Ride Plan provides Scriptural answers on different topics of concern and each topic discussion includes a reference card and a DVD to help readers walk through the scriptures concerning each topic. This month I would like to continue our discussion on the title, “Scriptural Answers on Forgiveness”. We completed last months article with a Prayer of Forgiveness and I would like to jump right in this month with How to Forgive Again: Here I would like to share an acronym for F O R G I V E. Forbid recurring thoughts of the wrongs to enter your mind. (1 Corinthians 13:5, NIV). Overcome the temptation to bring up the matter again (Psalm 141:3, NIV). Repeat Scripture in your mind (Proverbs 10:12, NIV). Give the situation to God (1 Peter 2:23, NIV). Intercede on behalf of your offender (1 Samuel 2:23, NIV). Value what you can give rather than what you can receive (Acts 20:35, NIV). Extend God’s grace mercy, and forgiveness (James 5:11, NIV). What Forgiveness Is: Forgiveness is dismissing a debt. Forgiveness is dismissing your deman that others owe something, especially when: They fail to meet your expectations; They fail to keep a promise; They fail to treat you justly. Forgiveness is dismissing, cancelling, or setting someone free from the consequence of falling short of God’s standard. Forgiveness is extended even if it is never, ever earned. Forgiveness is extended regardless of a lack of repentance. Forgiveness is releasing your resentment toward your offender. Releasing your right to hear “I’m sorry”. Releasing your right to be bitter. Releasing your right to get even (Romans 12:17, NIV). Forgiveness is releasing your rights regarding the offense. Releasing your right to dwell on the offense. Releasing your right to hold on to the offense. Releasing your right to keep bringing up the offense (Proverbs 17:9, NIV). Forgiveness is reflecting on the character of God. Just as God is willing to forgive us, we are called to forgive others. To forgive is to extend mercy. To forgive is to give a gift of grace. To forgive is to set the offender free (Colossians 3:13, NIV). What Forgiveness Is Not: Forgiveness is not circumventing God’s justice. God will execute justice in His time and in His way. Forgiveness is not waiting for “time to heal all wounds.” Time does not heal wounds – some peo-ple will not allow healing. Forgiveness in not letting 18

the guilty “off the hook.” It is moving the guilty from your hook onto God’s hook. Forgiveness is not The same as reconciliation. It takes two for reconciliation, only one for forgiveness. Forgiveness is not being a weak martyr. It is being strong enough to be Christ like. Forgiveness in not stuffing your anger. It is resolving your anger by releasing the offense to God. Forgiveness is not a natural response. It is a supernatural one, empowered by God. Forgiveness in not denying the hurt. It is feeling the hurt and releasing it. Forgiveness is not being a doormat. That would make Jesus the greatest foormat of all! Forgiveness is not conditional. It is unconditional, a mandate from God for everyone. Forgiveness is not forgetting. To forgive, you must remember. Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a choice – an act of the will. “You need to presevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised” (Hebrews 10:36, NIV). I trust you will find the freedom I have found in extending “Forgiveness”.

ach month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checksin’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

State and Stop Prizes

E

very month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners

I

f your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning an Ohio Bike Week Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending North Coast Thunder Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s all season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses). In 2015, riders had the chance to win 4 different motorcycles, Sturgis Rally Packages, hundreds of tickets to concerts and some of the most exciting motorcycle events in the state, and countless other great prizes! 2016 WILL BE EVEN BIGGER with MORE PRIZES, MORE RIDERS, and EVEN MORE EVENTS!

BONUS Check-in´s!

T

he 2016 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders on particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing. It’s really that simple!

hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or Facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

Y

ou can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio. com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booths for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners.

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and state-wide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608.

The RIDE kicks off in MAY!

Pick up your card this winter at local shows or stops and get ready for a great summer! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com 24

The Bear’s Crew Does Daytona by: Sharon, "Mama Bear" TRO Conributor

I

t just seemed like the right thing to do! Close the store for the week of the Daytonaa Rally and head south. Bear & I started the idea, and the more they thought about it, the rest of the crew joined in. Our caravan consisted of Santa, Whisper, Indian Jimi, and good friend Danny Wolcott. Our other employee, Joe, had other commitments, so he reluctantly stayed in Ohio… but was a great help by keeping an eye on the store & our farm, gathering mail & packages, & feeding my cat. Thank you, Joe!

Bear and I drove our Dodge 3500 Dually pulling a small camper and loaded our Harley Tri- Glide in the bed of the truck. This was accomplished by installing a “Mountain Masters” electric bike ramp/ winch set up. The ramp rolled out & down to the ground, rode the trike on, secured the front wheel, and pushed a button! The 1200 lb bike was pulled up at an angle and then forward into the bed. Wow, I have to say it was pretty amazing and worked well for us. Santa and Whisper took his Chevy pickup pulling our enclosed bike trailer with Santa’s ’14 Indian inside. And Danny, who owns a carpet store, took his box truck with Whisper’s ’96 Soft tail, Indian Jimi’s custom EVO chopper, and Danny’s ’12 Soft tail. Jimi rode with Danny and all worked well except Santa had a tie-down snap, which tilted his bike over enough to break a mirror. But this just gave him an excuse to buy a new, classy pair of mirrors at the Indian dealership in Daytona!

The crew all stayed outside of Jacksonville with Santa’s son, River who graciously found sleeping quarters for all four. We rented a camping spot right on the ocean in St. Augustine and made ourselves at home. For all of us it was a little bit of a ride to Daytona, and during the week we were there Santa, Whisper, & Jimi managed to put 1800 miles of riding in! The weather was awesome and I had to plead with Bear not to wear shorts at the Rally! As you can see, we all packed plenty of “BEAR’S” shirts to show our “Store Pride” – but really, we all do that up here too! As with any large rally, the bike traffic was heavy- fender tip tot tail light in and out of the city. Bear treated everyone to lunch at the Daytona Hog Stand Barbeque, and we all toured Destination Daytona (AKA Rossemeyer’s H-D). We touched based with a few of our reps from the parts suppliers and then hit the

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

road together to Main Street. Bear and I took the rear so I could hold my phone over my head and take pictures along the way. Of course, downtown was packed, but we all had a blast! Santa made sure to get a photo with the famous Arlen Ness and I got a hug from the Geico Insurance gecko (wow…). When not in Daytona, all of us did some sight-seeing in St. Augustine – the oldest city in America. Danny did a lot of visiting with Florida relatives and seemed to miss all of the group photos. (maybe this was on purpose?...!) But he faithfully wore his “Bear’s” clothing! Bear and I opted for less miles on the bike for more miles walking on the beach. I love the ocean and we woke up to surf-sounds and sea-spray every day. Then it was time to head north. We ran into sleet/rain/fog on the drive down and hit heave traffic and severe thunderstorms on the way back. But, all-in-all we has a safe, awesome time. I hope we can do this “group” vacation again- I know I won’t have to ask the crew twice!

KENNEDY STYLE

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

Ohio Bike Week When I recently handed in a vacation slip at work my boss asked “Where are you going now?” to which “I replied I need a couple of days off for Ohio Bike Week,” The response to that was “You bikers!” Most of that comment comes from just giving me a hard time cause I am a woman that rides but part also is also due to the fact that the people I work with just don’t understand the riding community. I constantly hear complaints about loud pipes, motorcycles weaving in and out of traffic and comments about what we oftentimes wear. Which got me thinking about Ohio Bike Week. As you know OBW starts Memorial Weekend this year. So in addition to the thousands of bikers will be thousands of campers with families and thousands of boaters and fisherman. OBW will be a perfect time to perhaps connect with people who just like those at work don’t understand the riding community. Just like them we work hard every day to earn a living. Just like them we have raised or are raising our children. And just like them we need downtime to unwind and enjoy life. Riding a motorcycle is really no different than taking a boat onto sometimes treacherous Lake Erie to ski or fish or head to the islands to party. Just a different avenue to relax and unwind. Riding a motorcycle with wind in your face is really not much different than camping out under the stars to feel the coolness of the night. Again just a different avenue to unwind. As we broke down camp after last year’s OBW one of the Rangers at East Harbor State Park said that it was a pleasure to have the bikers stay with them as he had never met a nicer group of people. I am confident that some of the campers or boaters we meet that week will come away with the same feeling. Ride safe,

An Iron Angel takes the Crown For 2016, Ohio Bike Week decided to team up with Mad River Harley-Davidson and crown a Ms. Ohio Bike Week as part of the festivities leading up to the Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event. Applicants were invited from all across the state, and seven finalists were selected. They were interviewed and took part in the Miss Ohio Bike Week Competition Fashion Show at Mad River as part of their Six Fest – celebrating the dealership’s 6th anniversary.

When everything was said and done; Steve Ernst, representing Ohio Bike Week, crowned our very own Carrie Fisher the 2016 Miss Ohio Bike Week! Carrie is one of our Thunder Roads Ohio Iron Angels, and we are exceptionally proud of her. The Iron Angels are TRO’s promotional team and help represent the magazine at various events throughout the year. Carrie is a tremendous example of everything we strive for as a team and a tremendous ambassador for motorcycling. Not only does she ride, she has several bikes and works on them herself. She welds, is an accomplished outdoorswoman, and has just entered nursing school. Far from simply just another pretty face, she is an inspiration to all of us as she seems to take on life “full throttle”! We wish her the best of luck during her reign as Miss Ohio Bike Week and now that OBW is just a bit more exciting with her on stage! We would also like to congratulate all of the finalists in the contest and thank them for taking part. We look forward to seeing you all at Bike Week! Photos courtesy Ohio Bike Week and Jen Gore.

DUAL-SPORT:

What does it take and how do I get in on it? By Ted Guthrie, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor So you’re hearing and seeing all this stuff lately about “Dual-Sport riding” and “Adventure-Touring” and you’re wondering what it’s all about. Motorcycle manufacturer ads on the subject typically show some rider fitted out like he’s ready to climb Mt. Everest, aboard a gigantic, intimidating-looking machine with miles of ground clearance and a stratospheric seat height. Well, those machines and that kind of gear are indeed part of the game, just as are high-end touring bikes, cruisers, 200 hp sport bikes, and so on. But that’s just one small part of the DS/ADV thing. Let’s look at the other end for now – along the lines of how a newcomer can get into this kind of riding, and in this article we’ll focus on Dual-Sport. First off, the term “Dual-Sport Riding” describes nothing more than how a lot of us first started out riding when we were kids. You may have had some sort

68

of little ol’ bike that you would ride down the road for a while to access some trails, ride the trails, then ride the bike back home on the road. Whammo! That’s it! That’s Dual-Sport Riding. Yeah, and what could be more fun? You’re typically riding on back roads (often unpaved), away from traffic, high speeds, and stress, and then you get to putt down some dirt paths. Fun, easy, relaxing, and exciting too! So maybe you’re getting a little interested in this idea and maybe considering giving Dual-Sport a try, but question is – what kind of bike, what kind of gear, where do I go, etc. Well, let’s start with the bike. This is the best part, because anything goes. Big bike, little bike, brandly-new, vintage, first-class, or totally funky – you can ride Dual-Sport on pretty much anything. I know, ‘cause I do it all the time! Rode my first Dual-Sport event on a stock, vintage, single-cylinder street bike!

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

Fact is, there are, and always have been a whole group of motorcycles produced specifically for this kind of riding. They’ve always been around. So just let your checkbook be your guide. I go out there and ride all the time on bikes that cost me four hundred bucks, alongside my buddy on his $10,000 European wondermachine. And you know what? We both have a blast! So, you can walk into your favorite motorcycle dealership and just point out the one you want to purchase, or you can hunt down a used treasure. Craigslist has ‘em, so does eBay. Should you go used, my personal recommendation is to find something stock, with low-miles, and needing little to nothing to go out and ride it. One thing’s for sure – do yourself a favor right off the bat and plan to mount up a good set of genuine knobby tires. Ride just once in Ohio mud on a bike equipped with “Dual-Sport tires”, and you’ll agree on the absolute need for knobbies. And yes there are DOT-legal knobby tires. Just ask your dealer or consult the specifics when you’re shopping online. Question: Aren’t knobby tires hazardous on pavement? Look, any tire on any surface has limitations. Just use the same common sense you do in any riding situation. The tire manufacturers couldn’t

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Gloves too, of course. Anything will work, but remember that part about possibly sliding down a gravel road. All kinds of stuff on the market, although you do want to consider them jagger-bushes when choosing. No matter what, just be sure to wear ‘em!

offer DOT-legal knobbies if they were not capable of reasonable performance both off-road and on. So you got yourself a pretty darn decent DS bike, got some knobbies on it, and what next? Well, gotta get yourself some gear. What do you need? As much as you want. You know the old saying – don’t dress for the ride, dress for the crash. So, you need a helmet. What kind? Any decent helmet will work. Just remember that you’re going to encounter water, and mud, and dust. So, if you’re going to wear a street helmet, consider that it’s going to get dirty, and flipping open the shield is going to let all that water/ mud/dust hit-cha right in the face and eyeballs. Consider a dedicated off-road helmet, and goggles. There’s also a whole range of “Dual-Sport” helmets. Check ‘em out. Very cool. Prices range from very reasonable, to way-out-there. Boots? Yep, a must. Two things to consider: your feet are going to get wet, and you’re going to need to find traction underfoot. That means your smoothsoled boots are out. Hiking boots and/ or work boots? Yeah, they’ll work, but – dedicated off-road boots are available in all price ranges, and some really decent ones don’t cost no more than a good pair of work boots. Or get ‘em used. Don’t laugh. I picked up my last two pairs of off-road boots at swap meets. Topquality, barely used, and for a fraction of new. Somebody bought ‘em but never wore ‘em. Score!

I just wear jeans? Sure you can, and I sometimes do so myself. I also ripped my knee open last year and had to go to the emergency room to have them lace me up with a bunch of stitches. No need to spend a ton of money, but consider getting yourself a pair of nylon riding pants, and a pair of those slip-on knee protectors. Or to start, just get the knee protectors and slide them on over top of your jeans. We’re not in a fashion contest. Somebody laughs, just pull up your jeans and show off your non-scarred knee caps. A jacket? Ah, we wear ‘em all the time these days. Lightweight, cordura-nylon, super-tough, and loaded with pockets and zippers and air flaps and all kind of worthwhile stuff. Some are waterproof too, because remember – it does rain outdoors on occasion. You can wear a jeans jacket – lots of folks do. Just remember - cotton tears right open when exposed to an abrasive surface, such as occurs should you go sliding down a gravel road. And then there’s Ohio’s State Flower – the omnipresent “jagger bush”. At least that’s what we always called them. Whatever. You know the ones, with big thorns sticking out all over. Such bushes love to grow across our trails, arm-high. Rake a few dozen of them across your exposed forearms as you ride by and you’ll understand why we wear them cordura jackets.

Also for the bike, get a Route Chart Holder. What’s that? It’s a little plastic box that you mount on the bars. Got a clear window on top and a couple of knobs on the side. At Dual-Sport events they’re going to give you a piece of paper with all the turns and mileage typed out on it. Cut each row of these instructions into strips, then tape ‘em together in sequence. You then roll the strips into that route chart holder, and roll the strip forward as you ride. There’ll be arrows along the way to help you, but USE THE CHART, too. Arrows can be missing, or messed-with by the locals. You don’t want to end up out in boo-foonowhereville, lost, and with nobody knowing where you’re at. Besides, following the instructions on the chart is fun. Just take your time, stop at turns if you have to, and keep matching the info on the chart with your bike’s odometer, and the arrows, and what road signs you may see along the way. Try it! It really is part of the fun of dual-sport riding. Ok. Got the bike, got the gear, got the ambition, now what? Find an event. Lots of info online. Go to Facebook, and also check out sites such aswww.usdualsports. com. Or, just Google “Dual-Sport rides in Ohio”, for example. Entry fees vary, and membership such as in the AMA may be required. If you’re new to this, contact the promoter and ask ‘em straight out how tough the ride is. Some of ‘em have you just running up and down back roads for the most part, while others feature some pretty challenging trail sections (often optional, though). Prep for the event. Make sure the bike is ready. Air your tires down to about 15 psi. This will assure reasonable handling on the road, yet provide decent traction on the trails. Adjust and lube your chain. Carry some tools. Make sure you take your phone along on the ride, and check to see if the hosting club has an

Pants, and a jersey or jacket? Yes, you should wear pants. Yeah, but can

emergency number to call if you need help out on the course. If at all possible, ride with a buddy, or at least take one along to hang out at the start and wait for you to come back. At the very least, tell somebody back home where you’re going and what you’re doing. If you end up at the event alone, hook up with some other riders – either on “your starting minute”, or along the course. Everybody likes riding with another rider or three. You never know what you’re going to find when you show up at a dual-sport ride. At the Ohio Valley BSA Owners Club dualsports that I help put on, we get everything and anything showing up. Super-serious riders sure, but also lots of vintage bikes, including old British machines, plus big ADV bikes, and really funky stuff that you won’t see anywhere else. And, we’ve got riders ranging in age from 16 to well into their 80’s. Lady riders, too! But, I’ve also gone to dual-sports where it’s

nothing but a “sea of orange” (all KTM motorcycles). But who cares? Everyone is there just to have fun. There will always be riders who are really into it, but lots of others like us who are just playing around. Just remember – any time at all that you’re out there riding puts you miles ahead of some slob sitting at home doing nothing but watching tv. Lastly, are these races? No! While many dual-sport events actually “time you”, and hand out trophies, these are really just a way to go out and ride a prearranged course, all legal, and have a good time. So if you’re new to the dual-sport game and are considering giving it a try, please do so! I’ve done all kinds of riding and racing over the years, all over the country, and yet I keep coming back to dual-sport riding, right here in Ohio. I find it to be the cheapest, most-fun, low-key, and enjoyable riding there is. Give it a shot. Bet you’ll be back for more.

Thunder Roads Ohio – Café Racer Feature South Garage - Kimera Sportster Cafe Racer Geoff Baldwin, www.ReturnoftheCafeRacers.com Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

It's been some time since I featured a custom build from Italy's South Garage. That doesn't mean that Enzo and the boys have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs though. Their website currently showcases over 30 original South Garage custom builds that are enough to make any motorcycle lover weak in the knees. Although European and British made motorcycles tend to be their preferred subject matter, South Garage have ventured into relatively new waters with their latest Harley Davidson based build.

The South Garage 'Kimera' started out life as a 2006 Harley Davidson 1200cc Sportster. Never the one to turn down a challenge the South Garage team set their sights on converting the Harley cruiser into a cafe racer styled ride. This of course meant dealing with the inherent Harley Davidson design features that make this type of transformation a problematic one. 74

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Levelling out the Sportster's hunched frame and squat rear end was the most challenging task to overcome. For this an entirely new front and rear suspension system was chosen from the Öhlins catalogue. At the pointy end there's a set of custom mounted gold anodized forks, held in place by a one off CNC alloy top clamp and rolling on a downsized front rim. At the back a pair of tall piggy back shocks mounted to a lightweight, alloy swing arm lift up the rear to level out the backbone of the frame.

The bikes one of a kind tank and tail have been hand formed from aluminum. The custom, narrow fuel tank sits low on the frame and features an offset filler with Monza styled cap giving it a unique, asymmetrical aesthetic. The tanks belly has also been shaped to follow the curve of the engines v-twin heads to maximize capacity. The tail uses a classic cafe style hump with an inset brake light and top ridge that mimics the lines of the tank. One thing South Garage never fails to deliver on is a great looking paint scheme and Kimera is the perfect example. The combination they've selected uses a striking trio of brushed and clear coated alloy, Ox blood paint and gold pin striping that ties all of the other elements of the bike together beautifully. Harley's often cop a bit of flak in cafe racer circles and the comments these kind of builds get on my Return of the Cafe Racers social pages tend to follow suit. This time though I think Kimera could leave the neysayers lost for words.

Gang Mentality “So which gang are you in?’ Nothing pisses off an MC Member more than that STUPID question. It’s funny, growing up an Ohio farm boy I always pictured a “gang” from what I saw from the movie “The Warriors”, or perhaps even “West Side Story”, or “The Outsiders”. As romantic as they make it out to be on the big screen, we all know in real life it’s not glamorous at all. Typically, it’s out of pure necessity, or survival depending on where they are raised. Well, let’s see, I am a 46+ year old man, with three grown children that I raised. I work as an IT consultant for one of the largest companies in the world. I go to work everyday, I have multiple vehicles, a camper and a Harley Davidson, and we just sold our house in a model community to downsize as many American families do at this stage of life. I’ve worked in the network data industry for almost 30 years, yet according to those in law enforcement who use public scare tactics to validate their agenda, I am a “gang member!” Mind you, I have never been convicted of a crime in my adult life. But because I joined a diamond wearing motorcycle club, I am according to law enforcement an “Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Member. (OMG)” A gang is defined by Webster as “a group of criminals,” & “a group of young people who do illegal things together and who often fight other gangs.” But it is also defined as “a group of people who are friends and who do things together.” So, knowing this you understand that your bowling team is defined by Webster as a “gang”, as well as your bridge club, softball team, ski club, chess club, mom’s club, etc. Hey hey the gangs all here… Come on now, you know that I know those aren’t the kind of “Gangs” LE is including me in reference to; they mean “Criminal Organization” Gang types. Organizations where participants claim an affiliation, common bond, similar beliefs, & brotherhood, yet rein terror on unassuming victims. You know like the Catholic church, with by its own admission in their March 28th, 2014 report published in BishopAccountability.org have in the time period of 1950-2013 counted 6,427 Clerics “credibly’ accused of crimes by a total of 17,259 reported victims. Obviously the Catholic church, and all known members, including you if you attend, is a member of a criminal gang as defined by LE. Well let’s see, no one in my entire international club was convicted of a serious crime last year, or for several years back, so LE must be relating it to any year in history that someone wearing 76 76

my colors, or any MC Colors was convicted of a crime, or that equates to a “pattern of criminal activity” by it’s participants, so let’s in turn use any year in history as a sample for defining a “criminal gang”. Like the 2010 “National Police Misconduct Reporting Project” (NPMSRP) which out lines ONE YEAR from January 2010 to December 2010, “There were 4,861 reports of Police misconduct tracked to include crimes committed in every state in the Nation, involving 6,613 sworn LE officers involved (354 were Agency Leaders such as Chiefs or Sheriffs) with 6,826 alleged victims involved resulting in 247 Fatalities associated with the tracked reports, costing a total taxpayer expenditures of $346,512,800 MILLION dollars in estimated amount spent on misconduct related civil judgments and settlements excluding sealed settlements, court costs and attorney fees.” These crimes were committed by “On Duty” officers, this doesn’t account for any convictions of “LE GANG Members” not on duty (not with their Gang or other “Bluebloods” at the time they committed crimes), and as published in the report “While the rate of LE officially charged with murder was only 1.06% higher than the general population murder rate, if excessive force complaints involving fatalities were prosecuted as murder the murder rate for law enforcement officers would exceed the general population murder rate by 472%.” (Statistical data supplied by www. policemisconduct.net 2010 NPMSRP report) Remember, these are statistics for only ONE year. Wow, sounds like a pretty dangerous “criminal gang” problem & pattern of criminal activity! Now let’s look at MC Club “criminal gang” statistics. We will use the FBI’s 2013 (NGR)

“National Gang Intelligence Centers” Report. (www.FBI.gov) Now please don’t miss the Hypocrisy in that this report that includes statistical data on all types of gangs, including labeled “Outlaw Motorcycle Gang” (OMG) was created and published by Law Enforcement, who we have just established by their own definition and criteria are most probably the largest and most dangerous “Criminal Gang Organization” on the face of the planet. Unfortunately, their own report really doesn’t give any accurate numbers of Motorcycle Club members convicted of a crime. It does state that “OMG’s” represent approximately 2.5% of gang members in the United States. They do point out crimes where two MC’s fought each other, or members were convicted of a crime, and of course they accuse all OMG’s of selling dope, prostitution, theft, drug possession, RICO Cases, etc. (yet the accusations are not exclusionary of members never charged with a crime, as they do for themselves when their “Blueblood” brothers are convicted) You know, all the same crimes LE Gang Members are convicted of yearly as well. Of course this is the LE Gang Organization that is categorizing me as a “gang member”. That’s rich guys… I think your own credibility is in jeopardy fellas. Did you know that there are many task forces created on your tax payer dime to combat specifically biker gangs? Check out the website www.midwestomgia.org. This is the “Midwest Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigators Association.” Wow, that’s a fivedollar handle if I ever heard one. Check out their logo on their website. A logo that has a bloody slash across a 1%er Diamond, yeah, that’s tax funded professionalism at its finest. NO agenda implied there. I happen to have had personal dealings with this group in the

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

past. I came up in my former international club in their jurisdiction and they would stop at the old clubhouse and try to make conversation. I’ve found them lurking in the dark around multiple clubhouses taking pictures of all the license plates of everyone parked outside (Club member or not); they have followed us to funerals, bike runs, bar grand openings, etc. I dealt with them personally in asking for one of my former club vests back after it was lost, and no crime was committed or charged, to which we still don’t have the vest or club colors back several years later due to a 100% BOGUS ongoing investigation. This is purely theft of US Citizen property which was stolen by this agency and it being kept as a “trophy”, as they do often. Let me make a suggestion. You can’t break the law and/or rights of citizens, in pursuit of enforcing the law, and expect to be given ANY dignity, respect, credibility or honor. If you do, you are simply a classless hypocrite criminal. What these “LE Gang Members” do is go around testifying as expert witnesses against anyone who happens to be in a MC and is charged with a crime, whether the incident actually has anything to do with the charged being in a club or not. I know of several cases where simple bar fights, that happens in millions of bars in every state of the nation on a daily basis is escalated into gang activity charges, even if the club member was the one provoked or even attacked first. I was actually told by one of their representatives that they prefer dealing with motorcycle clubs because there is a hierarchy that keeps its members in line, unlike most

THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

street gangs in which “anything goes”. These people are paid professional liars for a living, literally, yet they are called on the stand and we as citizens are supposed to actually believe they are giving honest expert testimony? That’s a disgusting joke. You are not an expert witness to ANYTHING if you’ve never actually been a club member in a REAL MC. You are simply spewing allegations, false accusations, trumped up sensationalism charges to justify your own existence, and budget money, hence your paycheck! See any conflict of interest their folks? They get PAID to make this stuff sound 1000 times worse than in reality so they can validate their own job!! Let me be clear! I AM NOT a hypocrite like these specific members of the LE Community! I do NOT believe all cops are bad. I do NOT believe all cops are criminals. I have 30+ year friendships that are in the Law Enforcement Profession. I RESPECT the job they do. I DO NOT Respect the hypocrites that would label me, and everyone like me a gang member! So please, I am asking you Mr. & Mrs. US Citizen, if you are called to a jury trial regarding someone who is a member of a club, please leave your Sons of Anarchy, made for TV biker gang mentality home and see the cases for what they really are, trumped up BS! Thanks for reading. Keep it REAL! My road name is “Tabasco”, and I approve this message! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT 7 Things You Need to Buy With Your Handgun by B. Gil Horman, NRA If you are in the market for a handgun, then you have plenty to think about in regard to choosing a make, model and caliber that will fill your needs. But it’s a mistake to think that buying the gun is where the purchase ends. Handguns are not ordinary tools that can just be tossed in a drawer like a wrench or a hammer. To properly store, maintain and use a pistol or a revolver, you need to stretch your shopping list to include several more items: 1. Safe Gun Storage Absolutely first and foremost on the to-buy list is a device or system for securing your handgun against unauthorized access. There’s something out there to fit every budget and situation, portable quick-access strong boxes, and heavy duty fire-resistant gun safes. 2. Gun Case You’ll need a way to safely transport your handgun from place to place. Soft side and hard side gun cases do a great job of protecting handguns from dings and scratches. They are readily available at most sporting goods stores. Many of these affordable cases are also lockable, which may be necessary to meet your local regulations for the legal transportation of a firearm. 3. Cleaning Kit Guns are machines, and so like any other mechanical device they need proper care and maintenance in order to keep running properly. An affordable way to get started is to pick up a simple caliber-specific or universal cleaning kit, like those offered by Hoppes, KleenBore, andWinchester. Recreational firearms can be cleaned as needed. However, concealed-carry and defensive guns should be cleaned and lubricated after every trip to the range and checked regularly.

But how much should you buy? When I started collecting handguns, I couldn’t afford to stock up on thousands of rounds. So I started by stocking enough for three or four trips to the practice range. The plan included 50 rounds of practice ammo and two or three reloads (about 20 rounds) of defense grade ammunition per trip. This evened out to keeping 200-rounds practice and 60 to 80 rounds of defense-grade ammunition on hand at home. As time goes on, ammunition can become a monthly budget item so that more can be stored away for a rainy day. Be sure to buy the right cartridges for your gun because ammunition usually can›t be returned once it leaves the store. 5. Practice Along with ammunition, time and money will need to be set aside for practice at the shooting range. Some ranges provide hearing and eye protection, others don’t. Luckily it’s not hard to find affordable safety glasses, ear plugs or muffs and a range bag at your local sporting goods store. 6. Holster For those who plan to legally carry a handgun, buying a quality holster makes all the difference. Cheap, low quality, or poorly designed holsters can make wearing the gun a miserable experience. Often the gun gets blamed for the discomfort. But the same firearm in a good holster that provides the right amount of support and stability will become almost forget-it’s-there comfortable to wear. Plan to spend about 15 percent of what you paid for the gun on the holster, which will usually be enough money to get the right rig for the job.

7. Training Last, but certainly not least, the new handgun owner needs to seek out as much training and shooting related information as they can afford. One-on-one classes with professional instructors using live-fire practice is the best option available, but it can be expensive. If this kind of training is not accessible, then invest in quality books and videos until you can get into a class. Just a few useful resources to consider include the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home [], the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home, I.C.E. Training’s Counter Ambush Home Training Course, and Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals by Michael Martin. Reprinted with permission from the American Rifleman, courtesy the NRA.

4. Ammunition Having enough of the right type of ammunition is the key to making the best use of a handgun for its intended purpose. Generally speaking, handgun ammunition is available in practice-grade loads and defense-grade loads. Practice grade ammunition costs less due to the use of simple bullet styles (full-metal jacket, lead) and less-expensive components. Defense-grade ammunition costs more because of the sophisticated bullets (hollow points) and high grade components they contain. 80

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Can your CCW Gun “Survive”? By Chuck Haggard Over my years of carrying and training people to carry handguns for serious purposes, I have noted some trends in how people decide "what gun" they want to have for concealed carry. The considerations for both regular CCW folks and off-duty LE are almost exactly the same, so I see little difference in requirements for what one should carry. Most people will choose a handgun that feels good in their hand, that they shoot well, or what that is small and easy to conceal, or some combination of these factors. One factor that I rarely see considered, unless one has already had a bad experience, is whether or not one's chosen handgun will be reliable under the conditions that it is going to be carried, or if it will survive those conditions.

holster.

A well-known firearms instructor decides to give up the S&W snubby, carried as a backup gun in his pocket, for one of the new age very small single stack 9mm pistols. After some time in carrying, he notes that the 9mm pistol, if not field stripped, cleaned and re-lubed at least weekly, will consistently give a first shot and then a fails-to-feed. The instructor ends up going back to his .38 snub as a BUG, even though the 9mm pistol is superior in capacity, power, and reloading speed, because the greater certainty of those first shots being available from the snubby, and due to the snub being more able to survive neglect and pocket lint.

carrying a well-known and famous brand of .380 pistol on his ankle. One bad day he has to pull the gun while caught up in a robbery/attack by two armed suspects. He successfully pulls the .380 and gets one shot off, wounding one of the attackers, but then the pistol has a stoppage that he is unable to clear before he is shot by the second gunman.

The pistol he was carrying that day was not robust enough to work through its daily ankle carry, which subjected the gun to dust, dirt, moisture, etc.

#4

Another firearms instructor is carrying a popular small single stack .380 concealed close to his body in the summer when he had to wear lighter clothing in hot weather. One day he decides to do some routine maintenance, and finds that the trigger on his pistol is dead. In detailing the gun to find out what was wrong, he finds that the mainspring of his gun has corroded due to sweat and the end loop had snapped.

#5

Some case studies to illustrate my point:

A police officer friend of mine has a limited number of back-up guns to choose from by his agency policy. He decides to run a small .380 pistol in an ankle rig, normally worn outside of his boot. He works in an area of the country where it gets VERY cold in the winter, and snow is common. I express my concerns about his gun and holster/ carry mode choice. Due to agency rules he decides to stick with the gun and holster

Some of the 1911's reputation for reliability was based on guns carried in battle in Condition 3 (hammer down on an empty chamber) in a flap holster. The 1911 is legendary in many circles, and was used by the US military for two world wars along with numerous other military actions, in addition to be a staple of early police use of semi-auto pistols. However some authorities, such as retried SGM Kyle Lamb, along with several other special operations folks, have noted that the 1911 doesn't do well in austere environments and has serious reliability issues. How is this possible? Carry mode appears to be the answer. In WWI and WWII, and for most of the history of the 1911, it was carried in condition 3 in a flap holster. In modern times, such as incidents noted in the debriefing for the "Blackhawk Down" fight, the 1911 was carried by Delta operators in a thigh rig with no protective flap, and in condition 1. This change in carry mode led to the 1911s Delta was using to get debris into the back of the slide and firing pin area, causing failure-to-fire issues. It's something to be considered.

combo for the time being. Modern service autos tend to have a good reputation for reliability but aren't always very small. With the right holster and clothing choices, it's worth it to go with the larger gun in many cases. Later that year, after things got below zero in his area, he has a chance to live fire check his BUG and finds that it freezes up dramatically when exposed to moisture and cold, giving him one shot and then the slide fails to function. If one is going to carry a handgun under severe conditions, be those conditions civilian or military, the pistol needs to be up to the task. All of the militaries on Earth have gone to some variation of a semi-auto service grade pistol, and one very real reason for this is that a modern service grade semi-auto pistol, such as the Glock 17, Sig 226, etc. are the most durable and reliable handguns ever built for use in austere conditions where they are subjected to abuse, dirt, dust and weather. There are a number of compact versions of these service grade pistols that make an excellent choice for CCW use, the Glock 19 and 26, the S&W M&P Compact and Shield, the Sig 229 and 239, are all examples of such pistols. If you are unable to make one of these pistols work, there are often other choices that can work for the carry mode chosen. If your chosen pistol cannot survive such conditions, then you may have to think about changing their mode of carry, to have more than one sample of their chosen handgun on hand for when one of them fails, or realize they will have no choice but to have a strenuous maintenance program to keep the handgun in working condition. This is the ONLY 'red chili' my hubby will eat because it doesn't give him heartburn. Why, because it doesn't have as much tomato product as the usual chili recipe AND I use stock instead of water - I'm telling you... it makes all the difference!

RECIPES Love this classic ‘Biker” recipe! It tastes so good and is so easy to do~ Drunk Butt Chicken

Poser Chili (looks hot, but isn’t) Serves 6 (or 2 hungry bikers)

1 tbsp dried bay leaf, crushed 1 tbsp garlic, minced 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed tight 2 tsps fine sea salt 2 tbsps black pepper 4 tbsps paprika 2 tsps cayenne pepper 4 tbsps ketchup 3 tsps Frank’s red hot sauce 4 tbsps beer (or soda) 4 tbsps white vinegar 1 (12 ounce) can beer (or soda) 1 (3 1/2-4 lb) whole chickens •

Wash chicken well inside an out and pat dry with paper towels.

Mix the rub: paprika, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar in a small bowl and set it aside. In another bowl, mix glaze: brown sugar, ketchup, frank’s red hot sauce, white vinegar, 4 tbsp beer (save remainder in can and set it aside)

1 lb ground Pork ½ lb ground Breakfast sausage 1 med Onion, diced 1 15 oz can Corn, drained (optional) 2 15oz can Kidney beans, drained (or black beans) 1 15 oz can diced Tomatoes 1 sm can Tomato paste 4 cups Beef stock 2 cups Chicken stock 1-2 pkgs Taco seasoning 2 tbsp Chili powder 1 tbsp Cumin 1 tsp Baking soda (optional-helps with the toots) HOT option: 1-2 jalapenos, habaneros, or 2-3 tbsp cayenne pepper (more of less to taste) •

In a frying pan, sauté corn in a tbsp. of butter till lightly brown.

In a large sauce pan, brown onion lightly.

Add beef and sausage, cook for 2 minutes, breaking meat apart to avoid large clumps. (I add 1 tbsp of dry beef bouillon to make my meat extra beefy tasting).

Add 1 cup chicken broth to help breakdown the fat in the meat and further avoid large chunks. (if you like it chunky, sim1ply brown the meat).

Add corn, beans and tomatoes to meat, stir well to combine.

Mix in 1 pkg taco seasoning, chili powder, cumin, and baking soda (helps reduce the backfires).

Add remaining chicken stock and 1 cup beef stock, cook over medium-low heat for 1 hour.

Add tomato paste and stir well to help thicken.

Cook over low heat for another hour stirring OFTEN so it doesn't stick to the bottom. (if it does stick pour chili into another pot, it can still be saved. DO NOT SCRAPE THE PAN. THE BURNT BOTTOM WILL POLLUTE THE REST OF THE DISH!!!).

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. I do not add any salt because the taco seasoning is pretty salty by its self.

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

Serve with Fritos, cheese, sour cream, diced onions, avocado, green onions, crackers, hot sauce, whatever lights your fire!!!

Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! -The Iron Cowboy

Want it HOTTER? Simply add some diced 1-2 jalapenos, habaneros, or 2-3 tbsp cayenne pepper when you combine everything else

Pour beer can out (or drink it) until it is just a bit over half way full and then add crushed bay leaves and 1 tsp of rub to the half full can

Loosen the skin on the breasts, legs and thighs of your chicken.

Massage the rub into the meat under the skin and then all over the outside of the bird’s skin as well as inside the cavity.

Place beer can in the “butt” of the bird making the bird stand upright.

Preheat grill with all burners on high until grill is heated and ready to cook.

Cook over indirect heat, kind of off to the side so it won’t burn

Place the standing bird the grill, close lid

After 30 minutes glaze the chicken and rotate it.

Cook another hour rotating and glazing the chicken every 30 minutes

Transfer chicken carefully off of beer can and onto cutting board.

Let rest 5-10 minutes and then carve and enjoy!

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... ROOKIES

SHEEP?

While riding one day, a lone Biker met a Farmer riding a horse with a dog and a sheep alongside. The biker began a conversation . . . . Biker: "Hey, cool dog you got there. Mind if I speak to him?" Farmer: "Dogs don’t talk." Biker: "Hey dog, how's it going?" Dog: "Doin' alright." Farmer: Look of shock. Biker: "Is this your owner?" pointing at the Farmer. Dog: "Yep." Biker: "How does he treat you?" Dog: "Really well. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food, and takes me to the river once a week to play." Farmer: Look of total disbelief. Biker: "Mind if I talk to your horse?" Farmer: "Horses don’t talk." Biker: "Hey horse, how's it going?" Horse: "Cool." Farmer: Extreme look of shock. Biker: "Is this your owner? " pointing at the Farmer. Horse: "Yessiree Bob." Biker: "How's he treating you?" Horse: "Pretty good, and thanks for asking. He rides me regularly, brushes me down often, and keeps me in a shed to protect me." Farmer: Total look of utter amazement. Biker: "Mind if I talk to your sheep?" Farmer: "The sheep is a liar.

A rookie police officer pulled a biker over for speeding and had the following exchange: Officer: May I see your driver's license? Biker: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my 5th DUI. Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle? Biker: It's not my bike. I stole it. Officer: The motorcycle is stolen? Biker: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the owner's card in the tool bag when I was putting my gun in there. Officer: There's a gun in the tool bag? Biker: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the dude who owns this bike and stuffed his dope in the saddle bags. Officer: There's drugs in the saddle bags too?!?!? Biker: Yes, sir. Hearing this, the rookie immediately called his captain. The biker was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the biker to handle the tense situation: Captain: Sir, can I see your license? Biker: Sure. Here it is. It was valid. Captain: Who's motorcycle is this? Biker: It's mine, officer. Here's the registration. Captain: Could you slowly open your tool bag so I can see if there's a gun in it? Biker: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the tool bag. Captain: Would you mind opening your saddle bags? I was told you said there's drugs in them. Biker: No problem. The saddle bags were opened; no drugs. Captain: I don't understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole this motorcycle, had a gun in the

tool bag, and that there were drugs in the saddle bags. Biker: Yeah, I'll bet he told you I was speeding, too

THE BROTHEL

A road worn Biker walked into a brothel, handed the Madam $500. In a slow, gruff voice the Biker told the Madam he wanted a warm beer, a bologna and cheese sandwich, and a fat ugly woman. Dear sir, the Madam replied, for that kind if money you can have a fine meal, and a beautiful woman. The Biker peered at the Madam. Look lady, I’m not hungry or horny, just home sick.

THE NUN

A biker came along a nun on the side of the road with a flat tire. He stopped and asked if the Nun needed any help. The Nun not being mechanically inclined, accepted his help. The Biker jacked up the car, but when he got the tire off the ground the jack slipped and the car dropped. SHIT!!! shouted the biker. No,,, replied the Nun, say Bless Me Father. Grumbling under his breath the biker jacked the car up again, and again the jack slipped. SHIT!!! roared the biker. The Nun determined to save his soul kindly reminded him to say, Bless Me Father. Mumbling , and grumbling the Biker returned to the task at hand, but again the jack slipped dropping the car with a crash. His jaws locked, and his face red with anger, the Biker slowly muttered the words, Bless Me Father. With that the car slowly raised off the ground. The Nun seeing this miracle turned white as a ghost, and in a quivering voice sad SHIT!!!
