FROM THE PUBLISHER Here it is – our powerhouse Ohio Bike Week Official Rally Guide Edition of Thunder Roads Ohio! This magazine is packed with information on not only Ohio Bike Week, but rides, rallies, bike nights, and bike shows all across Ohio and the Midwest. We have flat track races, motocross, adventure / dual sport rides, charity road rides, and even hillclimb races – covering just about every type of riding imaginable. It’s all packed into this month’s issue of Thunder Roads Ohio! Pretty cool, eh? Ever since our launch, we have strived to avoid being stereotyped or referred to in any way as this type of motorcycle magazine or that – Harleys or Vintage, Sport Bikes or Racing. We’ve always wanted to cover it all, as a means of always having something different to show you. (Plus, it’s been a great excuse to collect a lot of different motorcycles!) We’ve always wanted to give our readers something to consider, something different, something new to expand their horizon. I’m often told that doesn’t make sense – that people want to look at what they are “interested” in. But, I’ve always believed that it would be a boring world if all bikes looked the same. In reality, isn’t that the essence of customization – to make our bikes unique? And how would you know if you were interested in Flat Track Racing or Hillclimb racing – if you never saw or heard about it? So, we try to mix things up. We have though, tried to always stay consistent in one regard. We aim to present solid, good quality events that everyone is welcome at. Maybe not always “kid friendly” – but common-sense dictates that’s not always possible, some things are meant to be adult only. However, we have always wanted to present events and rides that we would RECOMMEND as though you were a close friend – which we consider our readers as such. We make every effort to vet the rides and organizations we feature, but that’s really an almost impossible task unless you have an army of investigators and researchers. It’s just not possible, so we try to focus our efforts on the charities and events that involve folks that we would recommend. Not only in terms of the venue and ride, but the organizations and people involved. Are they people that we would recommend – or care to go for a long ride with ourselves? So here you are – with over 130 pages of possible ride stops and things of interest. How do you pick where you go? Of course, geography and proximity are a huge consideration. But also, I’d encourage everyone to consider WHY they are riding. Are you riding for a CAUSE, such as the countless charity rides? Are you riding for the THRILL (such as racing) – to EXPLORE (new destinations or routes) – or to try something NEW, such as a new kind of bike or style? I’d like to think you have a lot to consider, right here in your hands. If you’re looking to ride adventure bikes through Southern Ohio, sport touring through Amish Country, dirt bikes around the track, or v-twins through the streets of Sandusky during Ohio Bike Week – it’s all here. With so much to choose from, the most critical decision remains the one to simply get out and RIDE! Wherever you go – we hope to see you out there! Either out on the road or online through your social media postings (Always add the hashtag #TRO to your ride pics!) we want to see you out on your bikes! No matter what you’re riding or where you’re going! Just get out there and RIDE!! Oh – and a Happy Ohio Bike Week to you as well! See ya on the Road! Derek

2018 TRO Championship Bike Show Series Underway

Upcoming Bike Shows – Here are just a few, you can go online for a complete listing and updates.

Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out, though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues that have often showcased bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields (The Devil’s Staircase, Oregonia). Throughout we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates.

The DEVIL’S STAIRCASE Expanding? It looks like the Dayton Motorcycle Club may be making some major changes as they prepare for the 69th Edition of The Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb this Fall. The World Famous Party on the Hill may be the longest running motorcycle event in Ohio – and one of the oldest competitive motorcycle events in the nation; but that doesn’t mean things are set in stone and changes can’t be made. Over the past 5-6 years, the Dayton MC and Thunder Roads Ohio have teamed up to introduce a Bike Show and add a Motorcycle Give-Away as part of The World Famous Party on the Hill. Both appear to have been well received and have become tremendously popular – contributing to a growth in attendance and renewed interest in the historic event. For 2018, the DMC is considering the addition of motorcycle field events and possibly a concert on the evening before the hillclimb races. This would add a second day of activities to the event and encourage folks to come out for the weekend, rather than just early Sunday morning. This has proven a challenge for a lot of folks that come a long way, and we’ve received a lot of feedback from folks looking for something to do the day before. The expanded programming and additional day will allow even more opportunities for vendors and other sponsors to get involved in this incredible event. Details are still being worked out and the changes have not been finalized, but we’d love to hear your thoughts as well. You’re welcome to leave your comments on either the Dayton MC or Thunder Roads Ohio facebook pages – or you can get involved in the discussion on the Blog / Forums at ThunderRoadsOhio. com Iron Cowboy Productions, LLC is a promotional partner of the Dayton MC and assists with the Devil’s Staircase, as well as producing Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys become Presenting Sponsor of the Devil’s Staircase The Dayton MC and TRO are pleased to announce the addition of RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS (RussBrown. com) as the Presenting Sponsor of the 69th Edition of the Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb held in Oregonia, Ohio. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys have been part of the motorcycling community for more than 35 years and are an Official Sponsor of the TRO Buckeye Thunder Run, Ohio Bike Week, The Sturgis Buffalo Chip, the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™, American Flat Track Racing, and seemingly just about every major motorcycle event across the country. These are the original Motorcycle Lawyers that ride and care – and they back this with a clear commitment to the riding community. Founder Russ Brown was a motorcyclist first and an attorney second. A passionate rider since he first got on a bike when he was a 16, Russ decided to go back to school late in his 30’s and got his law degree. When he began practicing law he started to notice a disturbing trend: insurance companies were taking advantage of injured motorcyclists. This angered Russ to the point where he decided to make protecting fellow motorcyclists his life’s mission, and the first to adopt the term “motorcycle attorney.” Russ fought for the rights of motorcyclists on the road and in courtrooms since the early days of ABATE, MMA, and MRF as a founding member. He also created BAMBreakdown Assistance for Motorcyclists, a free volunteer network of riders belong riders, now numbering 2,000,000 members. Today, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys handles more motorcycle cases than any other law group in the country, with a solid history of hard-fought, stellar results. Managing Partners Chuck Koro & Jim Romag continue to offer free legal advice to any motorcyclist involved in an accident. Even if the rider does not need an attorney, the best course of action can be explained to them. In many situations, good advice early on can help to maximize a rider’s financial recovery. The Russ Brown business model is a cooperative built on shared expertise, with Attorneys nationwide who were 10

personally selected by Russ, Chuck & Jim for their skill and dedication. Unlike pay-to-play referral groups and franchises who sell their name, you cannot buy the right to be a Russ Brown Attorney. This ensures that riders are represented by nothing but the best personal injury attorneys anywhere in the U.S.--and that riders’ needs come first. We have seen firsthand this commitment for more than 15 years, while working motorcycle events all across the country. Well before they became involved with Thunder Roads Ohio, we saw that they were a credible, well-respected firm that didn’t simply roll out on motorcycles as part of a promotional gimmick. They became involved in events – such as The Devil’s Staircase, Ohio Bike Week, and our own Thunder Run – both to promote their work and also to support the riding community. It would be impossible for any of these major rallies, race events, or even rides to be held – without such support. Even more importantly, they have proven to have a long term and consistent approach with their commitments to the organizations they have chosen to

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

support. Such partnerships are essential for the long-term success of the events that many riders simply take for granted. There is an endless list of corporations, organizations, and even individuals that simply seek to make a few dollars off riders – without ever really putting anything into the motorcycle community. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys have chosen to make investing in the motorcycle community and in events such as the Devil’s Staircase a key part of their business plan. That’s respectable and every rider should appreciate their support. Thunder Roads Ohio is certainly proud to recognize Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys as a partner and recommend them to any rider in need of legal assistance.

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT Hi Friends, As I’m writing this article we are all waiting for those nice spring days but they’re just not here yet. Today we are having snow in parts of the state and if it’s not snow, it’s rain. Sorry. I’m so ready for nice weather. Let’s talk about how we are going to get and keep our accident numbers down. Go out to the garage and get your “Look Twice Save a Life” sign cleaned off and put it out in the yard. If you don’t have one call 614-3193644 and Chris will send you one. Put a new bright yellow “Watch out for Motorcycles” magnet on your vehicle and while you’re at it, put on a “Stay Alive Don’t Text and Drive” Magnet. The salt has been heavy on the roads up this way and I know the northeast has had a lot of snow so riding has gotten off to a slow start this year. In 2017 we had 265 crashes and 10 fatalities by this time in the year and remember, we ended up with 198 fatalities for the year. This year we have 120 crashes and 3 fatalities so far; 2 in central Ohio and 1 down by Cincinnati. Please ride SMART - Ride Sober, Ride Motorcycle Trained, Ride Alert, Ride with the Right Gear and Ride Trained. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. It’s time to show all motorists that motorcycles are back out on Ohio roads. As motorcyclists we need to be Aware that motorists just don’t see us, so we need to be alert. On Saturday May 5th at 9:00am, sign in starts for the Motorcycle Awareness Rally to the Ohio State House. Be there. Then go to the After Rally Party at Victory’s and see some old friends from around the state. Find out where some of the other Awareness rides are in other Regions. Also check out ABATE.com event calendar for a complete list. When I talk motorcycle safety, it is not just about motorcycles knowing the car driver. It’s about how we can prevent crashes. Many have been looking at the fact that within ten years, 25% of all drivers will be over 65 years old. That’s me. So remember when you can’t see anyone in the driver’s seat, they may not see you in the blind spot. Some may have arthritis and may not move as fast as they used to or their head may not come around as far as it used to. Another factor may be diabetes. If they get a sugar unbalance it may affect their driving and they may not see as well. So many senior citizens centers are putting on programs called Car Fit. This program educates seniors on ways to make their driving better. If you have time and would like to help with Car Fit, contact your local police and they should head you in the right direction. Remember you may save a biker’s life. I wish I could put signs on my car or bike that would say “Pull Over and Slow Down 14 14

for Stopped Emergency Vehicles” and “Put Down Your Phone - No Texting No Calling No Livestream”. It is the Law! If only people would think to turn on their lights in dusk of the day, when it’s raining and in the fog, and that is also the law! As bikers we are hard to see and we run with our lights on, and that is the Law! One thing I would like to remind you this month is that when you have automatic day lights, that does not always turn on the tail lights or rear lights. Check and make sure your car, your wife’s car and your kid’s car come on and if not, make sure they know it so they don’t get rear-ended in bad weather. Again this is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Go online and sign up for a riding class. Motorcycle Ohio has a Basic Rider class and you get your endorsement upon completion. Take the Basic Rider class for new and returning riders, Basic Riders 2 is a good class for a new bike and you can take a passenger with you and in Advanced Rider classes you can use your own

This year I’m going to be very busy around Ohio and will put most of my miles on in Ohio. I would like to go to Kentucky and finish the Bourbon Trail. And I may ride out to Denver for the MRF’s Meeting of the Minds, weather permitting in late September. Hope to see you out and about, please say hi. SAFETY Motorcycle Awareness Month will be kicked off on Saturday May 5th at A.D. Farrow Harley Davidson, Northstar, 7754 St. Route 36/37 E., Sunbury, Oh 43074. Sign in starts at 9am and the ride leaves at noon sharp, which is an escorted parade to the Ohio State House. We will have some speakers to emphasize how important Motorcycle Awareness is, reading of a Proclamation from our Governor and Proclamations from around the state. Region 9 will be hosting a get-together at Victory’s a few blocks away. See Flier All of our Regions support Motorcycle Awareness Month and they have some great events that we can support. May 4th – Region 14, Friday at noon at the Courthouse in Fostoria. Next day State Awareness Motorcycle Rally. May 19th - Region 8, Look Twice Save A Life Run. May 19th - Region 7, Back in the Saddle Ride. May 20th - Region 5, Blessing of Bikes. May 27th - Region 14, Memorial Run. Fliers can be found on the ABATE.com website in the events calendar, as well as in this Outspokin’. With a great riding season coming together we need to look at the ways we can stay safe. We need to be properly licensed and insured, and then be trained by Motorcycle Ohio. They have a new program called MORE. Check it out. The Maintenance of your bike is also important so do that oil change and follow the check list in your owner’s manual. Check the bike over to see if anything else needs attention. And then ride alert. Always be scanning ahead, close then further out and watch for changes in traffic flow. Last advice, Ride Sober and watch out for your Brothers. Abate of Ohio, Inc. (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) is here to support and educate motorcyclists. The organization is dedicated to the preservation of Motorcycling. And we need your support to keep up this fight. This is our 40th Year and we are running a $10 special on membership dues. Your club, group or organization can be a sustaining member for only $100 annually. Keeping you FREE is why we do what we do.

CMA It’s Not Complicated! My first motorcycle was awesome; a 1964 Bridgestone 90 Trail, 2-cycle that screamed at 60 mph and sometimes 65 downhill. No windshield so you caught the full effects of the wind no matter what direction it came from. In about 7 minutes you could convert it to a off-road climbing beast. Back then you could not convince me otherwise.

Oh, but how my riding experience changed. In 1975 I was riding the Suzuki RL 250 along with 2 Kawasaki F-11 250B. The RL was my climbing machine.

Today I’m on a different kind of riding machine. Even at my age I still enjoy getting out on 2 wheels, but they are just a different style and type of riding. Many people don’t like change. Change happens every day. There is one thing that has not changed and that is Jesus Christ. Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” NASB He is one constant that each of us can count on to never change. His love for you will never change. Jesus said in John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” NASB Undoubtedly your riding style and bikes have changed over the years as well. Realize today there are going to be changes. Understand Jesus has not changed. Come to the Father by asking Jesus into your life. He loves you.

KENNEDY STYLE

Costa Rica In Northeast Ohio we eagerly await snow free weather so we can ride. We grab at any window of opportunity to grab our bikes and hit the road. For most of us it’s a hobby. A chance to get out in the fresh air and let the day’s stress escape. However, a recent family vacation to Costa Rica showed a bit of a different side to the riding community. The main roads in this country are beautifully paved, winding in many places and most definitely narrow in most. Roads off the main highways heading to beaches and waterfalls are dirt (which was a whole other adventure in itself). Although cars are plentiful, bikes seem to be the mode of transportation. Locals heading to their jobs at the surf shops, restaurants and bars. You don’t see any baggers or cruisers here. And relatively few sport bikes. Most were dual sport, small cc’d types with some ATVs sprinkled in. Brands we know but models made for overseas, like the Honda Invicta. An ATV tour was in family plans. It’s a guided trip down dirt roads with stops at beaches and in this family’s case, Cantinas along the way. The trip can be tailored to what you want to do and see. However, what I did not realize until it was too late, was that there are some motorcycle tours from one day to as many as ten days to tour the Costa Rican countryside. These tours can be self guided or a guide can be provided and custom tailored to your needs. Something we will most definitely plan on a return trip in the future. If you are looking for some adventure and a break from Old Man Winter consider a trip to Costa Rica.

Holmes County boasts curvaceous scenic roads and caters to the motorcycle enthusiasts. Nearly every mile of state roads in Holmes County is designated as a National Scenic Byway. Along the route, you can’t help but take in the smell of fresh baked goods, fresh cut fields of hay and be surrounded by beautiful farmlands. Ride the “Holmes County Blitz” and start out with some new gear at Amish Country Leather. Located on Main Street in Berlin, Ohio, they offer a wide variety of quality leather jackets, boots, chaps, patches, helmets and accessories.

As life becomes more complex and demanding, many of us turn to our bikes as a means of escape from the rat race and daily grind. As we hit the roads, what better destination than Ohio’s Amish Country! Northeast & Mid-Ohio are home to the first and second largest Amish communities in the country. This month we introduce and feature the largest community which includes Holmes, Wayne, Medina and Tuscarawas Counties. To this end, Thunder Roads www.visitamishcountry.com Ohio presents a new regular feature and welcomes TRO contributor La Vonne De Bois. She brings 28 years’ experience as a tour guide in Ohio’s Amish Country. Her expertise on the area and relationships with local businesses and people are certain to ensure you getting the most out of your ride. June’s Feature destination ~ Geauga County.

s riders, we have the ability to gain a greater appreciation for the roads, scenery, and culture found in the tranquil rolling hills of Ohio’s Amish Country. It’s truly a great escape and I want to share my knowledge and encourage you to make Ohio’s Amish Country a part of your ride story. For 28 years, I’ve scoured the backroads of Ohio’s Amish Country as a tour guide and consider it one of Ohio’s true treasures. Using this experience, I’ve designed 8 well-planned routes throughout the World’s Largest Amish Community – encompassing Medina, Wayne, Holmes, and Tuscarawas Counties. OHIO BIKE WEEK NEW CONCENTRATED, HIGHER OCTANE FORMULA FOR 2018

BARREL HOUSE – INSIDE PARTY SHOT

Ohio Bike Week kicks off the 2018 Rally on Wednesday, May 23rd – with the

Mad River Harley-Davidson area opening up at 5pm to the public with the Mad River Saloon and Vendor Areas welcoming riders. Inside the dealership there will be a special Welcome Reception for riders and rally participants, all are welcome to join in a special preview of the week’s festivities presented by the OBW honcho’s and United States Warranty Corporation. Then you’ll want to head downtown for the Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon (A BTR Ride Stop!). The Barrel House Saloon is right on the water and offers live entertainment and fun throughout the rally. It’s the Official Party Headquarters – not just as the home base for the Bike Week Crew – but because it’s THE PLACE to head for sure fire good times at any point during the Rally. It’s packed every night, but even if you can’t make it into the actual bar – the pier leading up to it is packed with several more outdoor bars and dozens of vendors leading up to it. For the opening night of the Rally, the Barrel House kicks things off with Ekoostik Willy – a powerhouse band that brings Steve Sweney and Dave Katz from ekoostik hookah to join the cast of Glostik Willy. The powerhouse, superband delivers a rockin show which is sure to leave fans of both bands and the Grateful Dead, American folk rock genre’ awestruck and gasping for air.

Thursday, May 24th – Ohio Bike Week

really ROARS into town with the World Famous Block Party kicking off at 3pm on the streets of downtown Sandusky. From the edges of the Sandusky Bay and for blocks into the city – the streets are transformed into a biker’s paradise with vendors, live music, and lots – and lots – of bikes!

Kelly’s Island Ferry Picture

OHIO BIKE WEEK 2018 MAY 23 - MAY 28

It’s really a celebration of the lifestyle, more than anything. Good times with great folks! Vendors from across the country come down for the Block Party and their chance to hook up with over 150,000 bikers and enthusiasts as part of the Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event! Out at Mad River, things start early in the day with one the most popular rides of the Rally – the Kelly’s Island Poker Run. This Dice Run takes place on an island – out in Lake Erie! So, to get started you have to take your bike over on a Ferry. Well, technically, you first register at Mad River – then everyone rides over to the Ferry. It’s a great time that is always one of the most popular rides of OBW.

“The Kelleys Island Dice Run goes over to one of the area’s best hidden secrets. Check out the character of the island, win great prizes and hear awesome live music at the final stop - The Casino”, says Steve Ernst of Ohio Bike Week

OHIO BIKE WEEK Continued from P.47 Later in the afternoon, Mad River H-D will host Terry Lee Goffee – as he presents “The Ultimate Johnny Cash Tribute”. To many fans of the Man in Black – this is as close as it gets to seeing him live. The Downtown Block Party features FUEL as the Thursday night headliner – and then Red Ball Jets closing things out at the Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon. On Friday, the Mad River Zone opens up at 9pm – and activities include HarleyDavidson Demo rides and Live Music at the Mad River Saloon all day.

Terry Lee Goffee – as he presents “The Ultimate Johnny Cash Tribute”

One of our favorite Bike Week events is without a doubt the OBW Pool Party and Bikini Contest which Thunder Roads Ohio hosts at the Comfort Inn Cabana Bar (A BTR Ride Stop!). This year’s party is held on Friday and is once again presented by our friends at Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys and include all kinds of poolside fun in the sun. There is a cannonball contest for the guys, poolside games, and the annual calendar search bikini contest which includes over $2,500 in cash and prizes this year! Live music for the party is provided by none other than Billy Morris – former guitarist for Warrant and lead singer for Sunset Strip! The schedule says the party starts at 2pm, but plan on getting there by noon to get a seat! Friday Night features two perennial Bike Week favorites – Jackyl and Jasmine Cain. Jackyl will be headlining the Block Party Main Stage – while Jasmine is holding court at the World Famous Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon to close out the night. Last year – Jasmine rocked the Barrel House and actually dove off the stage into the crowd. (Which is quite a dive, if you’ve never been there!) The Block Party ROCKS on throughout the weekend with Jack Russell’s Great White on Saturday and then Phil Vasser and the Kentucky Headhunters on Sunday. Over 40 other acts perform over the weekend at stages throughout the area, including Reese Dailey and LATTER over at The Original Margaritaville (A BTR Ride Stop!) and Billy Morris from Warrant at Knuckleheads Saloon (A BTR Ride Stop!) in Huron. Check out the OHIO BIKE WEEK Pocket Rally Guide or ThunderRoadsOhio. com for more details on other spots to hit during OHIO BIKE WEEK! 48

OHIO BIKE WEEK Continued from P.48 The new Bike Week schedule allows an entire extra day of Block Party Madness, when compared to past years; and basically just cuts out the “dead days” in the middle. You’ll find that just about all of the past major events can be found on the schedule – including favorites such as the Bike Week Parade and the Owen Barker Memorial Dice Run. The Owen Barker Memorial Dice Run is hosted by Bikers Against Abused and Neglected Children (BANC) – a local 501c3 organization that actively works to support and protect children within the community. The Run has traditionally been held on Sunday, during the Memorial Weekend – but that had previously fallen on one of the “off-days” of the Rally during the first weekend. Thunder Roads has covered the event the last few years and it’s been a GREAT experience each time. It’s a huge ride organized by an group with an even bigger heart. It’s our hope that more riders can take part with it now falling on the main rally weekend.

OHIO BIKE WEEK BIKE SHOW State Championship Ring – to be presented by Vivid Jewelers This year, Ohio Bike Week and Thunder Roads Ohio have teamed up to present a new and expanded Courtesy VIVID Bike Show that’s Jewlers worthy of being considered THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! To that end, Lenny Strnad of Vivid Jewelers (www.vividjewelers.com) has created a unique custom Championship Ring that will be awarded to the BEST OF SHOW BIKE. Lenny has previously produced the TRO CHAMPIONSHIP RING awarded during the Piston Power Show to the SERIES CHAMPION. This show has drawn competitors from across the country, with it being a national caliber show. It’s our intention to develop the Ohio Bike Week

show as the BEST OF OHIO – and a direct qualifier for our National Championship Show being held next March and eligible to take part in over $10,000 in cash and prizes awarded there. This year’s show will feature a broader range of classes including CUSTOM and RADICAL BAGGERS, GARAGE BUILDS, TRIKES, as well as VINTAGE, CUSTOM PAINT, and IMPORT categories. All will compete on the by the water, as the show is being held once more downtown on Sunday, For more information and to register, visit ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Those that register in advance for the show will receive a FREE t-shirt as a new special incentive for this year’s show. For shops interested in participating and possibly exhibiting their bikes, a limited number of shop displays are available. To reserve space for group bike displays (ie., shops, clubs, race teams, etc..) email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

OHIO BIKE WEEK Continued from P.50

Accommodations With the new dates, Ohio Bike Week no longer overlaps a number of other events that have tied up a lot of hotel rooms the past several years. Even if you have had no luck in finding rooms in recent years, you may be surprised to find some spots still available at reasonable rates even at this late stage. The Official Ohio Bike Week Hotels can be found at www. SanduskyHotels.com These include the Comfort Inn on Milan Road / 250, where you’ll find the Cabana Bar and poolside fun throughout the rally. We wholeheartedly recommend these hotels as supporters of the Rally that welcome riders! One of the most cost-effective means of attending the rally is to save on the hotel costs and camp instead. For many, this makes the experience as you’re able to relax with others and really “escape” for the rally. This year primitive and RV camping will again be offered at the Erie County Fairgrounds by Ohio Bike Week as the Official Campground. The fairgrounds will have its own bar with live entertainment and adult contests. Pricing will be competitive with anything else in the area – and it’s the only location with Bike Week events happening on site! You can find out more about the Fairgrounds and reserve your camping spot at www. OhioBikeWeek.com.

BTR Ride Stops!

Win $500 with Digital Check-In’s during OBW! Make sure that you keep an eye out for Ride Stops while you’re enjoying the sights and sounds of Ohio Bike Week. Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

Grass Clippings and Other Road Hazards Spring has finally arrived, bringing some of the best riding weather of the yearnice and warm but not yet hot and sticky. Along with all the bikes out on the road, lawn mowers are coming out of storage to cut rapidly growing grass as well. Riding through the countryside this time of year, I might see as many as twenty or thirty places with grass clippings on the road in a single day of riding. Grass Clippings and plant debris in the road are a hazard to motorcyclists and it’s against the law to leave them there, isn’t that right? While it is true there are some municipalities that have ordinances about this, the closest you can get in the Ohio Revised Code is ORC 4511.74 Placing injurious material on highway, that reads in part: (A) No person shall place or knowingly drop upon any part of a highway, lane, road, street, or alley any tacks, bottles, wire, glass, nails, or other articles which may damage or injure any person, vehicle, streetcar, trackless trolley, or animal traveling along or upon such highway, except such substances that may be placed upon the roadway by proper authority for the repair or construction thereof. To get the police to cite someone or bringing an action yourself, you’d have to prove that grass clippings meet the above definition. In rural areas where the problem is greatest, that is probably a stretch. Before we talk about dealing with the grass clipping problem, let’s take a look at another inevitable hazard we can count on encountering this spring. Loose Gravel comes from a number of sources, and it seems like it’s most often found in the places that are worst for motorcyclists- in corners and at intersections. Counties that have lots of rural roads are not always good about plowing them when it snows, and because salt dissolves quickly, they spread gravel on the roads on hills and at intersections to help vehicles gain traction in snowy and icy conditions. This gravel stays around even in dry conditions on lightly traveled roads, lasting all winter, saving money and effort. Unfortunately in the Spring, most of it is 82 82

still there, creating a hazard in exactly the place where motorcyclists need to stop or turn. The second loose gravel area is in righthand corners. Trucks, often towing trailers, cut corners, especially on narrow roads. The rear truck and trailer tires go off the pavement onto the shoulder, dragging gravel onto the pavement. Often, so much gravel gets dragged out in the corners, it leaves a big depression on the shoulder, so road crews come out in the Spring and fill them back in. Road crews know there will be some settling and gravel’s going to be dragged back out anyway, so they dump extra gravel on the shoulder for good measure. I call this the annual “Refilling of the Gravel Dispensers.” Another loose gravel hazard comes from driveways along the sides of the road, especially uphill ones, after a hard rain washes gravel and debris down them and out onto the road. The debris frequently includes mud, sand and silt which can be more slippery than gravel. Long after the mud is gone, small amounts of sand and silt can remain on the road and be treacherous. How to handle grass clippings and loose gravel You’re probably getting tired of hearing me say this but, directed practice of your riding skills and developing situational awareness are keys to survival. Dealing with loose surfaces is an important part of your riding skills toolkit. Maximize your eyesight. There is no substitute for good eyesight when riding a motorcycle. If you have less than perfect

vision, get prescription glasses and wear them. At the same time, protect your eyes from excess airflow. If they are dried out and scratchy, you won’t see as well. Keep glasses and shields clean. Learn to read pavement. Riders are scared and outraged by grass clippings, but at least they are easy to see. The real test is being able to see bits of sand and silt in corners, and that requires experience as well as good eyesight. Don’t ride faster than the range of your pavement analysis. If you are cresting a hill or hump where you can’t see the road ahead or coming up on a blind corner, slow down! Know your lines. You should always be looking at alternate lines and analyzing their pros and cons, so you have a choice if you have to take evasive action. Preparation. Don’t fixate on an obstaclekeep your eyes on the best path around or through. If you are still in an area of good traction, apply the brakes and get rid of as much speed as possible, but release them before you reach the obstacle so you can coast around or through it. Relax, and if possible, take a straight line through the obstacle itself. If you are coasting in a straight line and lose traction, gyroscopic effect of the rotating wheels and directional momentum of the bike will keep it upright and going in a straight line. If that sounds like a lot to remember, it is. That’s why you need to practice these techniques and commit them to muscle memory so it becomes automatic. Then your brain is free to concentrate on other unexpected stuff that is bound to happen. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

Navigation. There are two goals- first, try to minimize the percentage of the time your tires are on the tar snakes. This involves picking the part of the lane that is clearest most of the time. More traction equals less squirm. Second, minimize the length of time your tire is continuously on a tar snake. For example, let’s say the left side of your lane only has 25% of the surface covered by tar snakes but they run in the direction of your travel. The right side has 50% of the surface covered by tar snakes but they are two inches wide mostly running across the lane at a right angle to your direction of travel. In this example, the right side will probably be more to your liking because the tires get more frequent corrective moments of full traction. Riding season is finally here. Get out, enjoy it and keep the road hazards away from your path. Happy riding!

Tar Snakes, narrow strips of crack sealant, are applied to prevent roads from cracking further and requiring complete repavement. I’ve ridden many roads with tar snakes that cause no problem at all, even on a hot day. Unfortunately, the increased use of sealant made from tar mixed with scrap rubber, combined with inept application, (where the sealant is applied several times thicker than needed) makes for slippery riding, especially on a hot day. Tar snakes are usually slippery when wet, so they can be a hazard even when it’s cool. Unlike intermittent hazards like grass clippings and gravel, tar snakes can go on for miles. Two things make them especially hazardous. First is their completely random pattern. There might be a few, but a mile later they could be all over the road. Sometimes they run across the road, sometimes in parallel with your direction of travel. Some are straight and some zigzag all over. Second is the extreme variation in tractionthe pavement of the road has normal traction while the tar snakes on it seem to have no traction at all. Whenever your tire gets on a tar snake, it starts sliding. A fraction of a second later it meets good pavement and abruptly quits sliding. Tire snakes drive people crazy! Here’s how to deal with them: Preparation. Your bike is going to squirm when you ride tar snakes on a hot day, so you need to get used to it. A great way to do that is find a stretch of highway with rain THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

grooves that run parallel to the direction of travel and make your bike feel like it has a flat tire. Ride the rain grooves until you can completely relax with the bike shifting around under you. Move slowly side to side within the lane to another to aggravate the effect. You’ll learn that just because the bike shifted under you doesn’t mean it’s going down or you need to be scared. With this added confidence, you’ll be able to concentrate on effective navigation rather than fear the next time you encounter tar snakes.

Motorcycle Sport Touring Association Rallies and activities for May Tri-STAR Rally When: May 25-28, 2018 Where: Allegheny Inn, Sparta, North Carolina Description: For some people, Memorial Day weekend means the Indianapolis 500 car race, but to MSTA members, it’s the MSTA TriSTAR weekend. The rally is called TriSTAR because of its location in Sparta, North Carolina, which is very close to neighboring states Virginia to the north and Tennessee to the west. Rooms at the host hotel open out to the parking area. Shelters are set up for the festivities, which include a Friday night cookout and banquet on Saturday night. Weather is usually pleasant that time of year and of course there are many great roads to ride in the area. Complete information is available on the TriStar web site at http:// msta-se.com/tristar/ Connect with local Ohio MSTA riders at these monthly breakfasts: Southwest Ohio Breakfast, May 19 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. TRO RIDER PROFILE

Rider walks of life Hello riders! My name is Randie Raige and I am a rider. I work, eat, sleep and breath motorcycles and have all my life. It’s a passion that has been passed down the generations of my family and I am now passing it down to my son. I travel the nation working for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys attending a wide array of motorcycle rallies, races and events learning the different cultures and styles they each bring. Through them all, from the dirt, to the track to the highway I’ve realized that it doesn’t really matter what you ride, as long as you ride, I believe we are all sharing the same core passion of the freedom that it brings. The throttle is very therapeutic to anyone who rides, whatever bike they are riding on. Sport bikes are my personal favorite, they are what I grew up around and what I ride myself. I’m also a tandem freestyle stunt performer of 17 years and through the support of all my awesome sponsors I have been fortunate enough to travel our beautiful country as well has Japan & Dubai entertaining other fellow motorcycle enthusiasts. If I have any words of wisdom through all my motorcycle related experiences, it would be to always wear your gear! Even if it just for a short ride down the street on a very hot day, wear your gear! I can assure you road rash burns a lot more than the hot sun beating down on your bare arms. Gear, gear, gear, wear it! In closing I’d love to wish everyone very happy trails, ride your hearts out and stay safe! Thanks for reading!!!

Stunt Rider Q&A A few of the most common questions I get asked are: “Why Tandem, don’t you seek to be in control?” The answer is NO! There is nothing in this world that I love more than being upside down with no hands, no feet up on a wheelie while looking at the upside-down faces of the awed crowd I am performing for. That is my freedom! “Don’t you get scared?” Not in a typical sense, my belief is the minute you let fear in to your decision-making, you have opened the door for mistakes and in-decision. So, I respect very much, the danger in the profession I have chosen but I am not afraid of it… I am not afraid to crash. I realize in this lifestyle and sport it is inevitable, so I prepare myself with training and conditioning to react the right way when it does happen. “Is it hard to do?” It is very challenging to be a tandem stunt rider. It takes a lot of practice and dedication just like in any other extreme sport, but most of all complete TRUST in my partner. I have to make sure I keep my balance always and understand the timing of each and every trick. I

As we prepare our routines for exhibitions, we take many things into consideration, such as the size of the venue, how close the crowd is to the track, weather and road conditions, etc. We want to entertain the audience with an edgy show, but nothing is taken for granted. Please understand that before we put any stunt into a show rotation, we have practiced that trick or series of tricks hundreds of times. This is what separates the top tier performers from novice acts. Dedication and focus are most important.

Building our stunt machine also takes a lot of time, skill and hands-on work. It can get quite costly if no sponsor support is offered. A lot of specialty parts and aftermarket modifications go into building a stunt bike, such as gearing, tire grip, bike armor, and a rear hand brake setup just to name a few. We have been very fortunate in this regard to have great sponsors who support us by supplying us with the top-quality equipment and modifications required. The stunt bike becomes an extension of our bodies and we both need to know it like the back of our hands. The sounds it makes, the feel & pressures of our brakes & tires, the gearing, etc. Our machine is an extension of us and must be in top condition for practice and performing. Many times, I have seen a crash caused by mechanical failure, not human error. I have also seen situations where a rider, knowing his bike so intimately, intuitively felt when something was wrong and avoided a problem before it happened. Having on head-to-toe, high-end gear always is extremely important. My gear includes helmet, back protector, padded riding jacket, gloves with knuckles, kneepads, kevlar jeans and

riding boots. While you’re learning new tricks, it is highly possible for error and crashing. Being determined and committed to this sport does mean sometimes sacrificing your own body to pain. But as I was taught young, if you don’t fall once in a while then you are not pushing yourself hard enough! The world of stunt riding is constantly evolving. It has elements of both the underground as well as mainstream events like XDL, and others. I feel fortunate to be part of this lifestyle and hope to be part of it for the foreseeable future. Where will the sport evolve? X-Games we all hope! We are all part of this evolution. Riders are getting younger all the time. I am the old timer at 30 years old, seeing kids as young as 13 coming up, trying and inventing new things but doing so with respect and reverence to the riders who came before them. In closing, not only does this extreme sport fulfill my desire for adrenaline, but also it teaches me a lot about the elements of life, it keeps me motivated and focused. It is who I am…

HOPEWELL ROAD RALLY Hocking Hills, Ohio May 4, 5, 6 - 2018 When the list of the Seven Wonders of The World was compiled, the great pyramids of the Giza plateau were included, but not those in North or South America. Cohula Pyramid, located in Mexico, is the world’s largest, covering three and a half times the area of Cheops’ Great Pyramid in Egypt. Cahokia Mound east of St.Louis likewise occupies more space than the largest Egyptian pyramid. North America is home to the largest effigy mounds, geometric earthwork complexes, and hilltop enclosures, with 90% of these located in Ohio. A millenium before George Washington ever heard of this place the people we call Hopewell were constructing a road lined with embankments through the Ohio Valley connecting two vast complexes of these earthworks. This is the Great Hopewell Road. Our historically-themed rally takes place May 4-6, 2018, and is named in honor of the Great Hopewell Road. The rally features two guided rides on Saturday, each of which takes a group to these impressive geometric earthworks, effigy mounds, and hilltop enclosures. The historic sites include Hopewell Culture National Park, Serpent Mound, Seip Mound, Fort Hill, Leo Petroglyphs, Ash Cave, Alligator Mound, The Great Circle, the Octagon, and Flint Ridge, source of that important mineral for peoples all over eastern North America.

HOPEWELL ROAD RALLY Local Riding Tips You no doubt have already noticed from maps or experience that the roads in this area are hilly and curvey, often at the same time. If you typically ride freeways or live in a flat region, these roads may prove to be a challenge to you, so we’re providing a few tips about riding in the region to help make your experience more enjoyable and safer. The best strategy to deal with the winding and hilly roads is toride at a comfortable speed and always be prepared for the unexpected. In early spring the roads often have a spot of gravel from winter road treatment at the apex or at the inside edge of turns. It can be startling if you unexpectedly hit a patch, you may experience a brief slip, but don’t panic, just hold your line, and you will be through it almost before you can react. The forested and rural terrain means that there is a possibility of deer moving about, sobe aware and scan the sides of the road ahead of you to spot any animals before they move to cross the road. In general, the deer are much less of a problem at this time of year than late Summer and Fall. The terrain has also affected road construction. Many tight turns on these roads are decreasing radius turns, meaning that the further you ride into the turn, the tighter it gets. So keep a steady pace, being prepared to actually slow down or speed up depending on whether the turn tightens or if you see an exit from the turn coming up. Another issue is that a few too many turns are “off camber,” meaning that the road slopes to the side in the opposite direction from the direction it is turning, e.g. the road turns left, but the lane you’re in slopes to the right. Again, a steady, moderate speed in the turn is the best defense, and try to do your breaking before the turn, not in it, unless absolutely necessary. Another concern is the many blind hills, where you can’t see past the crest of a small rise in the road. When approaching a blind hill, you should just assume that there is a car approaching from the other direction and will be over the line, partially in your lane, when it crests the hill. So ease over to the outside of the road when coming to and over a blind hill. Luckily most roads here have good signs marking unusual, or unexpected turns. Pay attention to them, but also understand that while they may warn you of the general 90 90

direction of an upcoming turn, they don’t always tell you how the road actually does turn. For example, a yellow diamond sign with an arrow might show a 90 degree right turn coming up, but in reality that turn may actually be 120 degrees or more! But at least you have been forewarned to be alert for a tight right turn. On a specific note, the road from the campground to Nelsonville includes a twisty downhill stretch desending to the river valley before approaching Nelsonville. This is a steeper downhill grade than it looks, and it is easy to get going too fast for some of the tight turns on the decent if you are not familiar with the road - take it easy! Now all this may sound ominous, but really the roads are great. Don’t worry, just get out on these great roads and enjoy them - our bikes were made for riding roads like these! Adventure Riders: Nearby state forest roads are typically hardpacked dirt/ gravel, often covered in a thin layer of loose gravel. In places some forest roads may run for a short distance on smooth bedrock. Some of the roads traverse fairly steep hills and have swithcbacks, and you may find some washboarding, most likely on hills. You may alson find shallow pot holes in the gravel, but a scouting ride on some of our routes showed that the forest roads are in generally good shape. Wayne Natioanl Forest has miles of off road trails, but a usage pass is required to ride them. Passes are available at the Forest headquarters on US33 South of Nelsonville.

Navigation There are many “dead zoness” in the region where there is no cell phone coverage. If you rely on a cell phone or on-line navigation system like Google Maps, you will not be able to receive navigation data in thse dead zones, and your navigation will not work. If you want to use this type of navigation you should download maps of the area when you are connected to the internet before you come to the area. When you are in the region and want to navigate, just load the downloaded map instead of using on-line data. Consult your phone’s navigation program for specifics. If you use a dedicated GPS like a Garmin or others which have preloaded maps, you do not need to worry. Local Gas/Food The nearest gas stations are located in Nelsonville, 8 miles north on SR 278. Athens is a major retail center and is 14 mi east on SR 56. If you are travelling through the Hocking Hills, there are a couple of gas stations near the park area, and more are located in Logan and Macarthur, both about 20 mi. away. The nearest restaurants are at the Lake Hope Dining Lodge ( 7 mi.) and in Nelsonville (8 mi.), as well as Athens (14 mi.) Lake Hope Dinning Lodge opens at 11 am and at 10 am on Sundays for their Sunday Brunch. Groceries are located in Nelsonville and Athens, and of course many gas stations double as convenience stores as well. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

“A Polished Turd”

For most of the country, Spring is late arriving. Snow in the Midwest in April? Ugh! Unfortunately, the Annual Degradation of the Motorcycle Club Community is right on schedule. It has actually gotten worse, not better. For the past several years it was the Garage Boy Pop Up Clubs that have ordered their patches on the internet sewed them on their brand-new vests, jumped on their new bikes they’ve barely ever ridden on the freeway, and jumped from bike night to bike night playing made for TV bikers. But now, the newest trend is those that jump from club to club to club every three months. And these are recognized clubs that should know better.

If you follow any of the web site biker community social media or website reporting outlets, you will see this new trend. You have top officers from established MCs screwing up, being put out bad with their organizations, jumping to their own newly created MCs, dragging along a band of rejects from Diamond Nations, sewing on their own diamonds, and acting like it’s perfectly okay to do so. This should be your first indication as to why they are bad in their own nations to begin with. There is ZERO integrity in their actions. To add to the problem, they are so hungry for numbers, they literally will mail their patches to groups of rejects in other states who also couldn’t make it with any real MC, after jumping from patch to patch in other nations. The entire thing makes my head hurt. Have you ever talked to someone, or seen something that is so utterly stupid it actually makes you squint and whisper to yourself? WTF? These people are trying so hard to create something that if it isn’t just a natural act, will never be REAL. They are trying to manufacture “MC Brotherhood”, with a bunch of turds who proved they could never make it in a real established MC in the first place. As most know, and I have said many times, I grew up around bike clubs. For those members, there was rarely a conscious effort to join an MC. Sure, there was a choice made to put on that prospect vest, and endure an 96

education that most men can’t handle, for the reward of being accepted into the “Family”. But in just living their natural lives, they found themselves in the company of brotherhood, and they craved the same. They didn’t join a club through the mail, get thrown out 2 months later, and take their motorcycle and go home to start their own MC. Even when you are in a real nationally recognized 50+ year old MC, there are few who can maintain the established requirements for decades. And these new “pop up” clubs will never keep it together to reach the same milestones as those who have come before them. Why you ask? First of all, they are being created with membership that can’t align with established MC protocol in the first place. They also have no bond with most of their members. They are more worried about quantity than quality. They don’t care for one

another. I mean, really love one another. They aren’t willing to DIE for each other. They will never last. Let me be clear. I have no Issue with a guy who probates, and joins a real MC, not a cop club or poser MC, but a real established MC and then discovers it doesn’t align with his beliefs, and he leaves out good, and perhaps years later joins another established MC that is a better suited fit. I’d be a hypocrite to say otherwise. But if you’re going to jump ship because you can’t follow rules and protocols of established MCs and polish up a bunch of turds in new patches, well… you end up with a bunch of polished turds, but they are still turds. KEEP IT REAL! My Road Name is “Tabasco’, and I approve this message. Tabasco.tro@ gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Another Ohio school board moves to protect its students with armed staff members by Chad D. Baus

The East Knox Board of Education passed a resolution this month that gives the superintendent the authority to allow staff members to carry weapons in school. The March 15 vote took place just over a month after 17 people were killed at a school shooting in Parkland, Fla. on Feb. 15. East Knox Superintendent Steve Larcomb said the East Knox Board of Education has been considering a resolution to arm teachers since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. According to the article, Larcomb estimated it would take a Knox County officer at least six minutes to respond to an incident at the East Knox schools, and the new policy would cut that time considerably. Larcomb is also exploring the possibility of having school resource officers provided by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Under the new resolution, Larcomb will decide who will be allowed to carry a weapon in school. To qualify, staff members must have a concealed-carry permit, and experience handling firearms from hunting or military training. In addition, staff members will need to go through training with the Buckeye Firearms Association, a gun rights organization based in Columbus, OH that provides firearm training. Meanwhile, it is reported that the nearby Mount Vernon City School District (MVCSD) Board of Education discussed the issue of school safety during their March 19 meeting, ultimately concluding they would not consider arming teachers. Security-minded parents who live in places with differing philosophies at area schools may want to keep this in mind and consider open-enrolling in a school that is capable of providing immediate protection for their children. In response to the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, which claimed the lives of 20 children and 6 adult staff members, Buckeye Firearms Foundation launched an emergency response training program here in Ohio for teachers, administrators, and other school staff. 98 98

Called FASTER Saves Lives(Faculty/ Administrator Safety Training & Emergency Response), the nonprofit program has to date provide high-level training to nearly 1300 teachers and staff members from 225 school districts in 12 states. This includes teachers and staff in 76 of Ohio’s 88 counties. “The response from Ohio educators has been more enthusiastic than we could have ever imagined,” said Joe Eaton, FASTER Program Director. “When we first announced that we planned to train teachers in armed response and emergency medical aid,” Eaton continued, “some people said teachers would never sign up. But within days of announcing the program, we had 600 apply for training. In weeks, it soared to over 1,000. Today we have nearly 2,000 faculty members from all over Ohio waiting in line for a chance to get this training. And more are contacting us every day.” The enthusiasm for this program has gone far beyond Ohio. School staff from six other states have attended FASTER training. In addition, instructors from as far away as Colorado have traveled to Ohio to see how the program works and take the idea back to their home state. Created by concerned parents, law enforcement, and nationally-recognized safety and medical experts, FASTER is a groundbreaking, nonprofit program that gives educators practical violence response training. The program is funded by thousands of small, individual donations to Buckeye Firearms Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable educational organization based in Ohio and the sister organization to Buckeye Firearms Association. Classes can be provided at NO COST to school personnel or school districts. The program presents a carefullystructured curriculum with over 30 hours of hands-on training over a 3-day class that exceeds the requirements of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. The purpose is not to replace police and EMT, but to allow teachers, administrators, and other personnel on-site to stop school violence rapidly and render medical aid immediately. It is a well-established fact that faster response to school shootings and other violence results in fewer lives lost.

The rides will be hosted by Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine in partnership with local ranges, ride stops, and sponsors throughout Ohio and is aimed at supporting the Buckeye Firearms Foundation and their FASTER Saves Lives Program to train teachers and others to better protect our children – as well as local NRA programs. The cost of the ride is $25 and includes a t-shirt for each full participant registering in advance. Non-shooting passengers are just $10 – and are still entered in the prize drawings. Those 16 and younger can ride free, but cannot shoot or participate in the prize drawings. All shooting ride participants will be required to show a valid CCW permit upon registration. Riders are not required to take part in the shooting aspect of the ride and are invited to still join in support of their constitutional rights and the work that Buckeye Firearms and the NRA do. Registration and additional information is available through www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com Rides and stops are still being determined. Work is underway to coordinate rides in a number of cities, throughout Ohio and we anticipate most of the rides being held in June and July. RECIPES

Hot n Cheesy Taco Dip Serves 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)

These are super juicy yummy burgers and make great little sliders too. (I love to mix a little italian dressing with greek yogurt to use instead of mayo!)

Feta Cheese and Herb Burgers Serves 4-5 (or 2 hungry bikers) ½ cup Italian flavored bread crumbs 1 egg ¼ cup fresh basil, diced 2 tbsp cup fresh oregano 2 tbs balsamic Italian salad dressing Salt to taste (remember the feta cheese is salty) ½ tsp black pepper 1 ½ lb COLD ground beef (or turkey, pork, lamb etc) 1 cup feta cheese crumbles Optional garich: olive tapenade, pepperoncini peppers, lettuce, tomato, In a large bowl gently, but thoroughly mix together bread crumbs, egg, basil, oregano, balsamic dressing, salt and pepper. Add in the COLD ground beef and feta cheese then mix everything together quickly before the meat gets too warm. This helps keep your burger tender. Cook in a med-high frying pan, griddle or grill until cooked through Serve on a soft bun with your favorite garnish

½ pound ground beef ½ tbsp Taco Seasoning 2 tbsp water 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature ½ cup sour cream ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 cup salsa ½ cup jack cheese, shredded ½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1 cup lettuce, finely shredded (optional) 1 tomato, finely diced (optional) 1 avocado, finely diced (optional) 2 tbsp sliced black olives (optional) 1 handful cilantro (optional) Brown the ground beef in a pan, drain the grease add the taco seasoning and water, mix and simmer until the water evaporates. Mix the beef, cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, salsa and cheeses in a large bowl, reserving some of the cheese. Pour the mixture into a baking dish and top with the reserved cheese. Bake in a preheated 350F oven until it is bubbling on the sides and golden brown on top, about 20-30 minutes. Optionally serve topped with fresh shredded lettuce, tomato, avocado, olives and cilantro

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

Rich Millionaire A rich millionaire decides to throw a massive party for his 50th birthday, so during this party he grabs the microphone and he announces to his guests that down in the garden of his mansion he has a swimming pool with two alligators in it. ‘I will give anything they desire of mine, to the man who swims across that pool.’ So the party continues with no events in the pool, until suddenly, there is a great splash and all the guests of the party run to the pool to see what has happened. In the pool is a man and he is swimming as hard as he can, and the tails come out of the water and the jaws are snapping and this guy just keeps on going and the alligators are gaining on him and this guy reaches the end and he gets out of the pool, tired and soaked. The millionaire grabs the microphone and says, ‘I am a man of my word, anything of mine I will give, my Ferraris, my house, absolutely anything, for you are the bravest man I have ever seen. So sir what will it be?’ the millionaire asks. The guy grabs the microphone and says, ‘Why don’t we start with the name of the bastard that pushed me in!’ Actual Advertisement in The New York Post: For Sale by owner: Complete set of Encyclopaedia Britannica. 45 volumes. A Tale Of Two Pigs Clinton returns from a vacation in Arkansas and walks down the steps of Air Force One with two pigs under his arms. At the bottom of the steps, the honor guardsman steps forward and remarks, “Nice pigs, Mr. President” Clinton replies, “I’ll have to let you know that these are genuine Arkansas Razorback Hogs. I got this one for Chelsea and this one for Hillary.. So, now what do you think?” The honor guardsman answers: “Nice trade, Sir.” Drunken Biker A drunk biker is riding through the city and his bike is weaving violently all over the road. An Irish cop pulls him over. The cop says to the biker, “Where have you been?” “I’ve been to the pub,” slurs the biker. “Well,” says the cop, “It looks like you’ve had quite a few.” “I did all right,” the biker says with a smile. “Did you know,” says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms, “that a few intersections back, your wife fell off the bike?” “Oh, thank heavens” sighs the biker. “For a minute there, I thought I’d gone deaf.” Good Women Are Hard to Find Nigel and Stephen, are keen fishermen and wine drinkers;they are enjoying some night fishing while on holiday, with their wives, in Poitou-Charente, France, last year. Slurping a large Bordeaux Supérieur, Nigel announces, ‘I think I’m going to divorce my wife, she hasn’t spoken to me in eighteen months.’ Stephen downs his glass of the red wine thoughtfully and after a while responds, ‘Think it over a bit more, Nige; women like that are hard to find.

Why doctors earn more than mechanics A mechanic was removing a cylinderhead from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a wellknown cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his ha nds on a rag and said, “So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $39,675 a year, a pretty small salary and you get the really big bucks ($1,695,759) when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, smiled and said to the mechanic…. “Try doing it with the engine running.” Our manager at the restaurant where I worked was a much beloved, jovial man. But there was one subject you didn’t dare discuss in front of him — his height. Or, should I say, his lack of it. One day, he stormed through the door and announced angrily, “Someone just picked my pocket!” Most of my fellow waitresses and I were speechless, except for the one who blurted out, “How could anyone stoop so low?”
