This holiday season, I would like to take a moment and thank everyone for the tremendous amount of support Thunder Roads Ohio has received from all across the state. We’ve grown tremendously this past year and our success is driven by the support of our sponsors / advertisers and of course - our readers! Thank you. I’d also like to encourage everyone to take some time this holiday season to step back and reflect on what’s really important in our lives. It’s so easy to lose perspective on what really matters and get overwhelmed by the minutia of the every day routine. One of the best ways to escape the routine is to break out of our lives and focus on someone else that might need some assistance. I’m not talking about simply donating cash (although that is huge in many cases) - but about putting boots to the ground and rolling up your sleeves. Especially this time of year there are many great causes in need of help, and virtually every one of them would welcome the help of new volunteers. Pick something you believe in - such as Veteran service organizations, dog rescues, or working with children. Or maybe do something totally out of your realm such as helping serve others at a soup kitchen or food ministry. Or you can do something on a much closer, personal level. Each of us know plenty of people in our lives that are in need of help. Maybe it’s an older relative or neighbor that has limited mobility. Or a friend that seems overwhelmed with everything going on in their life. A call out of the blue offering to help watch kids, give a hand with a project, or simply taking them out for coffee might make a world of difference to their day. Certainly we all have stresses in our lives and some of you may be thinking - who’s helping me out? I’d still encourage you to take a few moments and focus on the life of someone else in need or a special cause. Try setting aside even a few hours to actively help another person out - and you might just be amazed at how empowering that is in terms of your own life. In a strange, almost selfish way, you may discover that helping others might just be the most effective means of helping yourself when things seem overwhelming. Best Wishes to you and yours this Holiday Season,

The federal Renewable Fuel Standards program, which the EPA administers, requires that 18.15 billion gallons of renewable fuels such as ethanol be blended into gasoline and diesel fuel in 2014. The standards ensure that transportation fuel sold in the United States contains a minimum volume of renewable fuel as required by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

But federal law also gives the EPA administrator flexibility to reduce the required volume of renewable fuels in any year. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE DECEMBER 2013

Up until this year, ABATE of Ohio and the AMA has supported legislation that increases the penalties for right of way infractions. Every congressional session a bill was introduced that we testified in support to increase the penalties for people found guilty of marked lane violations, assured clear distance violations, and right of way violations that resulted in serious injuries or death. The bill increased the amount of fine owed by the defendant. The bill also made these offenses non-waiverable, which means that the defendant was required to appear in court to face the charge. At this point the Right of Way Bill has not been introduced for a couple of reasons. Sen. Seitz, a long term opponent of the bill is on both the Criminal Justice, and Transportation Committees. Those are the two committees that this legislation could possibly go through. Sen. Seitz has a great deal of influence over his party, the Ohio Senate, and the legislature as a whole. A bill to increase these types of penalties is going nowhere, unless Sen. Seitz changes his stance on the subject. Another reason for holding off on the Right of Way Bill is that there has been a change over the past few years in the way Ohio courts have been charging defendants in these types of cases. Over the past four years, I am not aware of any cases that resulted in serious injury or death that the defendant was charged ONLY with failure to yield the right of way, failure to maintain

assured clear distance, or marked lane violations. In the cases of serious injury or death the defendants are being given an additional charge of vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, or vehicular assault. These three charges carry with it bigger fines and potential jail time. In a lot of these cases the maximum fines and sentences are not being given. The fines and sentences are being reduced by the courts. In summary, justice is not being served by our courts in the case of these types of infractions, but it is a judicial issue not a legislative issue. Changing the law to increase the maximum penalty will have little effect if the charges are already being reduced. If we want bigger penalties in these types of cases we need to find a way to influence the court to give maximum sentences. Getting a group together and demonstrating in front of the court house to protest specific cases might have some impact. I would like to thank everyone for the support of ABATE of Ohio’s legislative agenda over the past year. Have a safe holiday. Rest up for more freedom fighting next year. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc.

SAFETYUPDATESAFETYUPDATES SAFETYUPDATESSAFETYUPDATESAFETYUPDATES SAFETYUPDATES

Hi Friends, The Ohio riding season is now just a day here and there, so these stats are not going to change much from now to the end of the year. These do show that we had less accidents and fatalities than last year, but still too many for us to let up on our vigilance. Remember, this year we had a late and very wet spring so bikes weren’t on the road so early. Next year we will hopefully have a nicer spring but we need to get these stats even lower. It takes work. 2013: Accidents 2,300; Fatalities 118 2012: Accidents 4,188; Fatalities 152 In the reports of these accidents, about half of the fatalities had the motorcyclists wearing a helmet and more than half involved alcohol. With freedom comes responsibility, and we need to remind people to be responsible for their choices. A good way to help lower these stats is to get training, especially if you are a new rider or have been off of a motorcycle for a number of years. Last year the Motorcycle Ohio (MO) Program trained more people than ever before. We need to keep supporting this program because we pay for it out of license plate fees. Talk it up. Take it yourself, just to see what it’s about. Believe that they can teach you something that you don’t already know. We will have a MO representative at the State Seminar to answer any questions you might have. Speaking of the State Seminar, it is coming up the first weekend in February at Deer Creek State Park Lodge, January 31st and February 1st. Education is the major focus of the Seminar. We want to teach you how to be a better rider and how to be a more effective advocate for motorcyclists’ rights. Whether in the larger political forum or in your own town council meeting,

what ABATE offers that you aren’t taking advantage of, is how other motorcyclists around the United States deal with these same issues. If you cannot make the fund-raiser on Friday night, drive down for the seminars and banquet on Saturday. It’s worth your time. Besides, it’s the middle of winter. Where else are you going to be able to get together with a bunch of brother and sister bikers in a nice hotel and have a great time? TIP OF THE MONTH: For everyone trying to get that last ride in. They have already started putting brine on the road along with salt. Make sure you clean that off your bike before storing it, that sh#t will eat your aluminum and rust any steel. Even if you can’t see it on the bike, assume it is there and give it a good cleaning. It’s also better to have a clean bike first thing in the spring. December is Toledo Mayor Mike Bell’s last month in office. I would like to thank him for all his support around the Northwest Ohio area in promoting motorcycling. He always put his personal signature on the Motorcycle Awareness Month Proclamation, which meant a lot to me. I know he will continue to support our cause and I hope to see him at events riding his white Harley. Here’s to many more miles . . . Ride Within Your Limits Mike Stock ABATE of Ohio, Inc. State Safety and Education Director mikestock419@gmail.com Last note: Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year. If you need a meaningful gift for someone, buy them an ABATE membership or a new ABATE t-shirt. It’s been a good year!

Lady Trick Rider Oil on Canvas

By Ken Goodson As featured in the AMA Hall of Fame Museum Gallery, Pickerington Ohio “I make art because I have to. I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. I think about how to make things all of the time. I study movement and people and how things work. I remember making my mom draw Batman for me because I couldn’t draw “real people”, then copying her sketch. I soon graduated to drawing comic book characters (all by myself)… In college, I would sketch or work in pastels to take breaks from studying, especially during finals. I did study painting and sculpture as well, as time allowed.” “The paints keep calling me. I’ve been painting with Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

knives, recently, palette knives, and a couple of old knives I’ve collected. I’ve always been fascinated with sharp edged tools. That’s also one of the reasons I became a sculptor, to play with chisels. I actually started using a knife when I had painters block, really bad. I couldn’t make a painting that I liked to save my life. I was talking to a friend who painted with a paintbrush you’d use on your house, because he wanted to capture the energy as fast as possible, and I thought, “That’d be cool to try with a sharp edge”. It turns out the sculptural quality I can get with a knife is pretty cool, too. Painting with a knife lets me capture the energy of that scene and freeze it on the canvas, and if I do it well enough, you might even feel it move.”

Harley-Davidson revealed their new Street 750 at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan and then subsequently at a Dealer Meeting in Kansas City. The motorcycle is a completely new model aimed at the emerging markets. The bike is powered by a 749 CC liquid cooled revolution X engine which is kept in leash by a six speed transmission. Soldiers and Sailors Monument

3 Public Square Cleveland, Ohio

I

By- Baby Bear, Thunder Roads Ohio

n the midst of downtown Cleveland, stands a historic monument then many pass by unknowingly. I recently had the pleasure of viewing the inside of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument that sits right in the center of Public Square in Downtown Cleveland when attending the Haunted Cleveland Ghost Tour (hauntedcleveland.net). The tour goes to many different sites around Cleveland including Franklin Castle, The Midwest Railway Preservation Society, and The Cleveland Police Museum amongst many others. We ended the tour at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument where we toured inside and finally got to go down in the long anticipated and little known underground passages! The Soldiers and Sailors Monument was built to commemorate the valor and patriotism of the Union Soldiers and Sailors of Cuyahoga County in the War of the Rebellion, as the Civil War was known then. More then simply a statue, the monument features a wealth of history and is a great place to visit and learn a little about the Civil War and veterans of Cuyahoga County. It’s interesting that all the years I’ve lived in Cleveland I never knew (amongst others 20

apparently) that you could go inside! It’s actually open to the public year round Monday- Saturday 9am4pm and is free admission. Lots of work has been done recently to revive the 119-year-old monument and many statues are featured inside including the architect, Levi Scofield and General James Barnett. Renovation began late in 2008 and the monument reopened in 2010. On the outside you see four bronze groupings of battle scenes depicting the Navy, Artillery, Infantry, and Calvary (The four branches of the Union Army). The column lists the 30 battles in which soldiers from this Cuyahoga County fought. Inside the monument you will find 9000+ Civil War Veterans names carved on the wall, amongst other statues and figures. Atop the monument stands Lady Liberty, a sign of loyalty to the nation. A narrow staircase leads down to the tunnels that run beneath Public Square, entered from the inside of the monument. Levi Scofield, the architect of the monument is said to still haunt them. Post war, those in charge of the monument had leftover ammunition and uniforms and wanted

Visitors now have reported many supernatural experiences evidenced both in pictures and recordings that suggest spirits haunt Captain Levi T. Scofield the tunnels. Although it was very cool to explore and see the tunnels, I personally didn’t feel I experienced anything supernatural, although others on the tour seemed to have captured things out of the ordinary on their cameras. Now that I know the museum portion is always open, I’d love to go back again. You will find beautiful stained glass windows, the emancipation of slaves, beginning of the war in Ohio, end of war, and the soldiers aid society depicted in statues amongst others, all inside. Ohioans from all over can appreciate the monument and what it stands for in Cuyahoga County and Ohio itself. For more information on the monument, visit: www.soldiersandsailors.com

The Strider – No Pedal, Balance Bike If your toddler can walk, the Strider will get your toddler cruising over dirt, grass, and pavement. In addition to the standard Striders – some dealers have customized emblazoned with various motorcycle manufacturer’s names or racer’s number plates on front. Mechanically they are all the same – but it makes it a little more fun when they have the same name as the “big boy” bikes on them. When it comes to toddlers, weight and fit are critical! Specification: • 6.4 pounds. • Seat height from 11 - 16”. • New Quick-Clamps on seat and handlebar; easy, no-tool assembly and adjustment makes life easy for parents and

insures proper fit for a growing child. • New 12” ultra-light one-piece molded wheel. Hero Holsters A great holster for those in Law Enforcement or with Concealed Carry Permits. Detective Brandon Moore retired from law enforcement due to injuries resulting from an on-the-job ambush. Unable to continue in his chosen profession, Brandon began making custom, hand crafted holsters designed to be worn comfortably inside the waistband. Hero Holsters follow a unique design approach intended to make it comfortable to carry a full size pistol inside the waistband. Many believe that this is the most effective approach for carrying a concealed weapon, but is often awkward or impractical with larger size guns. The same approach that makes these holsters effective for full size pistols makes them an even better choice for Compact and Subcompact firearms. We’ve found these holsters to be extremely comfortable, durable, and surprisingly affordable. And for those of you keeping score they are not only made in the USA, they are hand made by a veteran law enforcement officer right here in Ohio. Visit their website for more information and to order your HERO HOLSTER. Please note that these holsters are molded specifically for each intended firearm. You will need to know exactly what gun it’s intended for when ordering. When we visited the website, they were priced at $50 (+ $5 S&H) and reportedly shipping within 1 or 2 days in most cases.

Purses

This one is for the guys. Well, really it’s about the ladies - but of course this is a “gift guide”. Dollar for dollar, I don’t think that there’s a gift that’s offers more bang for the buck then a really cool, blinged-out purse in terms of a present for that special lady in your life. I picked one up a while back for a gift - and years later I still get points when she pulls it out! It’s easy to spend a lot on jewelry, flowers, and candy - but the practical side of men always wonders about this. Does this really make sense? (Of course, it doesn’t but it makes them happy!) A cool purse, on the other hand, is a very practical item that can offer years of use. When considering the prices - remember that this is almost a form of jewelry and shouldn’t be equated with what we might spend on a back pack or ruck sack. Much like clothing, though, most of us don’t know the slightest thing when it comes to shopping for purses. That’s ok - because these days you can find very stylish purses in all sorts of biker / guy friendly shops. One such stop that I would recommend is Avon Boot Shop. Avon Boot is one of the coolest stops I know when it comes to finding cool practical stuff for riders. From quality leathers to an endless array of boots - Avon Boot is a great place for guys to shop, and they just happen to have a nice selection of very stylish purses for you to choose from for that special gift. You can also find great purses at some Harley dealerships as well. Avon Boot Shop 38450 Chester Rd. Avon, OH 44011 (440) 934-3230

Salsa always makes a great gift – especially when it’s flavorful and something unique. Don’t make the mistake, though, of buying a glittery bottle of over-priced corporate salsa produced by a marketing firm. Instead you want to give a gift that not only looks neat – but tastes AMAZING. And in this case, it’s a family owned business from right here in Ohio!

Spanish Verde Salsa Spanish Verde Mild Spanish Verde Hot Spanish Verde XX (STUPID) Hot

We first met the folks from Jose Madrid at the Easyriders Show in Columbus – when we had the good fortune to have our display next to theirs. All weekend long we heard folks raving about the samples they had just tried – and often they came to our booth searching for something to quench the fire! Jose Madrid Salsa comes in a variety of flavors and are perfect for a wide range of uses. Of course, they are great with tortilla chips – but some flavors are great for salads, omelletes, baking, and even as a desert!

Artwork from Uhl Studios

David Uhl is considered by many to be the modern-day Norman Rockwell for motorcycle enthusiasts, and if you’ve been reading Thunder Roads Ohio you will most likely recognize his name and work. We first had the opportunity to meet David at the Lone Star Rally in Texas, when we unintentionally stumbled across his studio. In the midst of the Lone Star pandemonium, David Uhl sat in his temporary studio and created a masterpiece right before our eyes. His brush seems to dance effortlessly over the canvas laying vivid colors and amazing details wherever it went.

Since then, we’ve had the privilege of sharing some of David’s work with our readers and we urge you to visit his website and consider one of his works as a gift for the motorcycle enthusiast(s) in your life. His website offers a wide range of prints as well as select originals – something for virtually every price point. We are proud to have several of his prints in the Thunder Roads Ohio offices and they get comments from virtually everyone that sees them. In addition to the artwork for the wall, Uhl studios also produces Uhl Works – truly unique clothing that are just as artistic and attention getting as the paintings themselves. There’s nothing cutting edge about buying or wearing a name brand shirt that 50,000 other “stylish” folks are also wearing. Each piece of Uhl Works apparel is limited edition and reflects the same pride that the artist shows in his paintings. Uhl Works...original, revolutionary ArtWear. Uhl Works redefines the possibilities of imprinted apparel. Original concepts, original artwork, original apparel. Uhl Works represents absolute artistic freedom - meticulously crafted to the finest details and Made in the U.S.A.

David Uhl recently created an original work featuring Paige Wyatt from the Discovery Channel series “American Guns”.

David Uhl recently had the honor of presenting one of his works to The Pope at the Vatican.

The AMA is actively working to make sure that you can’t be denied coverage for injuries from a motorcycle crash. Do you think motorcycles should be singled out by law enforcement? The AMA opposes the discriminatory practice of motorcycleonly traffic checkpoints in New York. The AMA is fighting a federal grant program to expand the program to other states as well. Do you want to improve motorcycling safety? Thanks largely to the lobbying efforts of the AMA, the federal government has launched a national study into the causes of motorcycle crashes, the first in three decades. Do you believe motorcyclists should be able to modify their machines? New laws in California and elsewhere aim to require stock exhaust systems from the bike’s manufacturer. The AMA works to convince officials that there’s a better way to control motorcycle sound. Do you think motorcycle engine output should be limited? The insurance industry is pushing for these laws, and others that specify certain types of equipment, like anti-lock brakes. The AMA is fighting back.

The AMA convinced those companies to drop their blacklists. Do you believe in freedom of choice when it comes to safety gear? The AMA believes riders should wear all the safety gear all the time. 2014 INDIAN CHIEFTAIN The Iron Cowboy, TRO Editor

W

hen Indian unveiled their much anticipated bikes at Sturgis, one bike in particular was a bombshell and an outright declaration of war against all its rivals the ultra secret 2014 Chieftain. I wasn’t able to make it out to Sturgis this year, so I jumped at the opportunity to ride out to Indian of Erie when I was invited out to demo the new bikes. The first one I jumped on was the Chieftain. The Chieftain features a massive fairing with an aerodynamic design with swept back lights and three imposing headlights with the center one fully surrounded by chrome. The motorcycle also comes with a big protective windshield and the signature Indian valanced fenders. Just as dramatic as the fork mounted fairing - was the pair of hard saddlebags flanking the rear tire. It’s important to note that there is no disputing that these are unique bikes, created from the ground up as original bikes - not simply pieced together tributes or re-branded Victories. These are great looking bikes the create a presence and clearly blend the Indian heritage with modern technology. The Chieftain doesn’t have a physical ignition key - instead it comes standard with an electronic fob with two buttons on it. The buttons don’t start the bike - they actually lock and unlock the hard saddle bags. As long as you have the fob on you - the Chieftain will start with the push of a button. A big illuminated button in fact. It’s one of those universal power buttons that are found on just about everything these days. I must admit that this little detail is just about the only thing about the bike that I didn’t care for. Seemed a little out of place - especially since it was so prominent, on this retro styled bike. But then again, maybe it’s meant as a reminder that despite the bike’s vintage look - it comes standard with a lot of advance technology. The Chieftains sound system comes with Bluetooth built right in so you can link your cell phone or MP3 player wirelessly. There’s a 12 volt socket on the dash, but a subtle storage compartment

40

contains a USB connection and a padded pocket to hold a cell phone. So you can ride, listen to tunes, and charge all at once. The fairing windshield is also adjustable through a convenient switch on the left hand control. Some of the die hard V-twin rides scoffed at this initially, but I’ve enjoyed this feature on my BMW - so I already knew how nice this would be. The die-hards all thought it was pretty cool by the end of their demo rides. Now to the ride itself, and I will start off by saying that I was impressed. It was far more maneuverable and “light feeling” then I was expecting. In fact, after taking out the other Indians - I would say that the heavier Chieftain was the easiest to handle. The Chieftain has a slightly steeper rake (25 degrees) and the front end is designed to allow more aggressive handling. Of course, the thing that drives any bike is the engine - and in this case it’s the newly designed Thunder Stroke 111. It’s the first new “Indian Engine” in 70 years, and it was clearly their primary focus in the launch. It’s an entirely new design and doesn’t share a single part with any Polaris Engine or any engine for that matter. At the Daytona Spring Rally, Indian unveiled the Thunder Stroke 111 - not a bike, just the engine. They had displays where you could hear it fire up, but I must admit that I was a little cynical at the time. Indian really pulled out all the stops to promote the engine itself - and now that I’ve had a chance to ride it, I’ll tell you that it’s a beast. And it’s worthy of all the acclaim they launched it with.

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Indian of Erie is situated in the hills of Western PA and has some truly beautiful roads surrounding it. Joe Askins, the owner of Indian of Erie, recommended a great route for the ride and it really showcased everything the Chieftain had to offer. This bike has a lot of power and really a great feel as it eats up the road. Indian doesn’t release horsepower figures for their bikes, but there is said to be 119.2 lb-ft of torque available. With a twist of the throttle, the Chieftain launches forward and rose to just about every challenge I presented it. It was really a great ride. The Chieftain comes standard with just about every feature imaginable - including ABS Brakes. Braking was smooth and effortless with dual rotors up front (4 piston caliper) and a single floating rotor in back (2 piston). Motorcycles are a personal choice and it’s pointless to make direct comparisons in terms of “better bikes” etc.. It’s clear, though, that these are well built, quality bikes. When I returned to Indian of Erie, I spoke with many riders that had taken out the new bikes as part of the group demo rides. Without exception, everyone seemed impressed. Not just by the bikes - but the clear commitment that Polaris has made to the brand. To consider that these bikes were designed from scratch within a mere 27 months is amazing. The fit and finish was impressive and the emphasis on quality was clear. I’ve tried to hold back from talking about the leather - until the review of the Indian Vintage, but it would be unjust - even

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

scandalous - to hold back further. The seats on these bikes are nothing short of luxurious. Rich, supple leather that you’d expect on a $600 jacket - not on a stock motorcycle seat. The natural coloration on the Vintage really showcase the fact that this is genuine leather. It’s high quality, strong and durable. There it is again - quality. That’s pretty much the word that comes to mind when I walked away from the 2014 Indian Chieftain. Quality and wow. To find our more about the Chieftain or any of the 2014 Indians, visit www.indianmotorcyle or contact one of our local Indian Dealerships: Indian Motorcycle of Erie 10320 Wattsburg Road Erie, PA 16509 (814) 825-2396 Indian Motorcycle of Toledo 1212 Conant Street Maumee, OH 43537 (419) 891-1230 Thanks to Joe Askins and the crew at Indian of Erie for their hospitality and allowing me the opportunity to take out their new bikes!

Finalists for the bike.

2014 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN

FINAL BIKE GIVEAWAY

Plans are already underway for next year’s Buckeye Thunder Run. If you’d like to participate as a sponsor or host a ride stop, email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com

Jackass Flats, Dayton On October 23rd, Thunder Run Finalists and motorcycle enthusiasts met up at Jackass Flats in Dayton for our final motorcycle giveaway of the season. While weather (a mix of hail and sleet) prevented most from riding - a few brave souls kept it to 2 or 3 wheels. Some riders came from hours away for their chance to take home a new bike. With a great show by Karma’s Pawn in the background, riders were able to enter for a last chance to win a New Kawasaki Vulcan courtesy of Competition Accessories of Springfield, Ohio. This was a great cruiser and had been on display at Jackass Flats most of the summer, so it was an enthusiastic crowd.

Qualifiers won an assortment of prizes before the final name was drawn, and at the end of the evening it was Bob Johnson of Dayton that won the new cruiser. His winning entry was from a bike night earlier in the summer, and he was already making plans for his new ride before he left that night. Thunder Roads Ohio would like to thank Jackass Flats and Riders Insurance for helping to sponsor this stage of the Buckeye Thunder Run and Ohio Ride Card Giveaway - and certainly recognize Competition Accessories for providing the Kawasaki Vulcan.

Flying with a Fallen Soldier by Johnny Jet, www.JohnnyJet.com Delta Flight 2255 from Atlanta to Los Angeles seemed to be an ordinary flight with the exception of Candy, who was the most loving flight attendant I’ve ever encountered. Besides using her Southern charm to quickly defuse every situation, she began her welcome announcement by thanking the handful of uniformed soldiers on-board for serving our country. Her poignant message was followed by applause, and it put into perspective that none of us would be able to do what we do without these brave men and women. But this transcontinental flight turned out to be everything but ordinary. We later learned, when the captain got on the PA system about 45 minutes prior to landing, that we were transporting a fallen soldier. The plane went quiet as he explained that there was a military escort on-board and asked that everyone remain seated for a couple of minutes so the soldiers could get off first. He also warned us not to be alarmed if we see fire trucks since Los Angeles greets their fallen military with a water canon salute.

“When the pilot gets on, everyone listens. But when he said there’s a fallen soldier, the plane just went silent.”

Delta Flight 2255 from Atlanta to Los Angeles

A few minutes after touchdown, we did indeed have a water canon salute, which I’d previously only experienced on happy occasions like inaugural flights. This time, the water glistening on the windowpanes looked like tears. Passengers in the airport must have been worried when they saw our plane pull into gate 69A, as we had a full police and fire escort, front and back. I was on the left side of the plane and later realized that the family could be seen off to the right, standing with the United States Army Honor Guard. According to Wikipedia, each military branch has its own honor guard, usually military in nature, and is composed of volunteers who are carefully screened. One of the primary roles for honor guards is to provide funeral honors for fallen comrades. When the jet door opened, another military officer addressed the escort who was standing at attention. He then stepped on the plane and told us passengers “I just addressed the escort. It is a sworn oath to bring home, to the family, the fallen.” He paused and then said, “Today you all did that, you are all escorts, escorts of the heart.” And then thanked us for our time and walked off the plane.

It only got more emotional when I deplaned. There was a large number of passengers, who are normally in a hurry to get home or make a connection, standing by the window to witness something truly moving. To see the Honor Guard and family waiting patiently, while LAX baggage handlers and a military loadmaster removed the flag covered casket first from the cargo hold, was humbling to say the least. I’m not sure if it was the fallen soldier’s mother or wife who I watched slowly walk up to the coffin while a few other family members, wrapped in blankets, stood near with a dozen or so of the Honor Guards standing in salute. As soon as I saw her reach out to put her hand on her baby’s casket, I walked away.

As you can imagine, everyone was silent and no one got up, not even that person from the back row who pretends he doesn’t This ordinary flight became extraordinary and is one that I will [understand] English so he can be first off the plane. I’m sure never forget. most had meteor-sized lumps in their throats and tears in their eyes like I did. Reprinted with permission. 52

Even the little improvements were done in a big way. Reflex™ Linked Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System No doubt about it, there are times riding when you need to haul things down in a hurry. And you don’t get to pick those times. Or decide whether or not they occur when you’re on a flat, smooth, dry, perfect new stretch of pavement. That’s why our touring models feature new Reflex™ anti-lock braking (ABS) with dynamically, electronically linked brakes. ABS turns a locked up front wheel or a rear wheel skid into a relic from riding’s history. And the front and rear brakes are electronically linked to provide exactly the right amount of brake to each tire no matter what the road condition is. No matter how good you are, this will make you a better rider. Air-Adjustable Suspension With air-adjustable suspension that comes standard, you can dial in your ride to accommodate heavier or lighter payloads, battle unexpected road conditions or simply set it to how you like to roll. The lighter the load, the softer you can go by decreasing the air pressure a bit, or increase the air pressure for a more firm ride. A convenient air valve is located between the saddlebag and rear fender for quick adjusting.

Time to take a little break from the decorating, shopping, baking and singing Christmas Carols to read about bikes and wish for warm summer days and nights. You know what I’m talking about…riding weather! But, the reality is that this is December…already. The good news is that time is moving very quickly but the bad news is that time is moving very quickly. So how do you handle the winter months? I know some bikers bring their scoot indoors for the winter. And I don’t mean a warm storage facility or the garage…the living room. If you are one of those guys…we want pictures! Better yet, do what an old friend of mine used to do and decorate that bike in the true Christmas Spirit! This year’s Christmas List of Ideas For Your Favorite Biker are ideas from biker’s I know as well as friends. So I hope this makes your holiday season just a little easier. 1. I know you hate to buy gift cards but they really are a good idea. And, you can wrap them in a pretty box or use them as stocking stuffers. The gift cards I am talking about are very specific. If your guy likes to wrench on his bike, get him a card from his favorite parts store. Believe me, he will be thrilled! If he doesn’t wrench himself, you know where he goes to get things fixed. Get him a card for that place. Even if it’s toward an oil change, you are giving him something he can use AND you are making sure that bike is good to go when the snow melts! 2. Most guys rarely buy themselves really cool sweatshirts. But they wear them if they like them. Get him something that he likes but would never ever buy himself. The biker ones at the dealership are pretty expensive but he is going to think of you whenever he wears it so it may be worth the extra dollars. 3. This is a little out of the box but a very cool idea. There is a series of biker ornaments that are for this year and Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

numbered. And, once again, at the dealership they are more than a normal ornament but there may be that one that reminds you of him. Again, may be worth it. 4. One year I found a lot of David Mann prints on EBAY and matted and framed them. He was famous for his depictions of biker life and his work was in Easy Rider for years and years. The neat thing about his work, you can find a print that pretty much tells your story. You may find many and they are cool. Especially if your guy has that place in his house that has a lot of biker stuff…the garage, the barn, in the basement or in the living room where his scoot is decorated for Christmas! Jumping ahead, I need to add a few New Year’s Resolutions to this article. We all make them and we all break them. But I am definitely going to try very hard to stick to this year’s resolutions. There aren’t many so I don’t put pressure on myself. 1. One resolution this year is to NOT, under any circumstances, fall off of that Shovel every again. Remember the Chillicothe story…once doing that is enough! 2. You may run out of gas and you may get caught in the rain but definitely not have them both happen at the same time as a friend of mine experienced. So, either check the weather or get some gas! This should be fairly easy. 3. Ride more…ride more…ride more. Sometimes you just have to say…the flowers can get planted later, I can live with a little dust or I have all summer to clean out the garage. Whatever the excuse, summers go by too quickly and we have to experience every moment! Have a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Enjoy your time with family and friends. And, as the New Year approaches, I am going to be thinking about the fun times ahead in 2014 on the back of the bike!

“Percy”

Male • 84 lbs • Red Fawn Coloring Percy (Braska Podge) is settling in well so far to his foster home, and is gradually learning the ropes on how to be a great family member. He is doing well with the other dogs in the household. He tested as being “cat safe” at the track, but his foster home does not have any small animals, cats, or small dogs to confirm. Though, we think it’s likely he’d be fine with cats and small dogs. Similarly, he seems to be a gentle guy, and would likely do well around small children as well, though he hasn’t been exposed to many as of yet. He does do well with smooth floors, and is getting the hang of stairs. He’s done well when left alone, since there is another animal there to keep him company.

“Louise”

Female • 67 lbs • White and Brindle Coloring Louise is such a sweet lady! She is very mildmannered and gets along swimmingly with our two greys. She loves to be around people, but is fine hanging out with the pups at the house while we do our human things, too. She’ll do anything for love - including worming her way around the other dogs if they’re being loved on to get some attention for herself. She is fantastic with our 7 year old, too, and loves to give him kisses! Louise is CRAZY about food...holy moly! She will go over to the food bowls at random times and just start licking them in hopes of finding one last morsel of deliciousness. Treat and feeding times get her so excited she starts hopping! Even with this love of all food, she has shown absolutely no food aggression whatsoever. Overall, she is a very sweet-natured girl who gets along well with everyone, canine and human alike! She’ll make a fantastic addition to any home as long as you have lots of food and lots of love to give! - See more at: http://www. queencitygreyhounds.org/louise.html#sthash.51N1QdI4.dpuf

anything you could think up. It is all quite impressive, really.

Ten years ago, I caught wind that a new shop had opened in Dayton, Ohio called Led Sled Customs. A short time after that, I had a mound of junk on two wheels that decided to catch fire while I was riding it (due to a stellar wiring job done by the previous owner). I wanted to throw my business to the new shop, not to mention I would finally get to check it out. Upon arrival, I realized this was not a typical bike shop. He had a handful of bikes in the shop, all very different from the catalog customs that filled the streets back then. These bikes were very much one-off, handcrafted, fresh and with more attitude than my ex-wife. It was very apparent that Led Sled was not going to be a fly-by-night business. Whiskey Bent and Impaler sat just inside the door, taunting me…daring me to make a wrong move. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. Years later, those bikes demand just as much attention now as they did then, regardless of how many times you’ve seen them. Pat Patterson came upstairs and we met for the first time. With less-than-anticipated 68

The success makes perfect sense for those who have gotten to know Pat. The only thing that outshines his larger-thanlife personality and ability to party, is his work ethic. We have seen him live and breathe his company for ten years, without compromise, to build the empire that is Led Sled. Pat Patterson, Owner of Led Sled Customs

laughter and sarcasm, he agreed to fix the burnt, beat-up, taped-up, rusted beauty of a bike I dragged to his doorstep. Pat gave me a quick tour of the shop and then I said my goodbyes. Ten years later, he is in the same building, however, it is quite a bit different inside. Now the shop is filled with worldclass bikes. The walls are covered with feature bikes from over the years, and endless boxes packed with some of the numerous parts Led Sled offers these days. Downstairs, he managed to squeeze in the tools and machinery to make about ThunderRoadsOhio.com

In honor of his first decade, we decided to interview Pat Patterson, to give our readers the opportunity to learn more about the man behind the magic. When I contacted Pat to tell him I would be stopping by to ask him some questions (and to make fun of Rex), I could not help but think back to the day I brought him my rolling Molotov cocktail. Who would’ve thought? TR: How many years have you been building bikes? Pat: I started in 1994. Bought my first new bike in 1993. I rode it for a year, then tore it apart, like every guy with a new bike should do. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Whiskey Bent, Led Sled Customs

TR: How did Led Sled Customs get started?

TR: What does Led Sled offer, besides full builds?

TR: Is there any advice you would give to other shops/builders that are just starting out?

Pat: I always painted, had done several bikes at home. It just started out needing more space. I kept getting busier. I never envisioned it would become this.

Pat: Man, a full line of parts…everything. Front ends, frames, fenders, floor boards, bars, grips, oil bags, battery trays, and direct bolt-on replacement parts for Sportsters. You can even look for wheels in the future.

Pat: Just focus on what you like and stick with it!

TR: You just celebrated 10 years of huge success in the industry. How does that feel?

Pat: Absolutely. My very awesome wife, Jen. Donny Loos, for letting me run around with Sucker Punch Sally’s, when it was actually Sucker Punch Sally’s. My hero, my father, Clarence Patterson. Most of all, the entire staff of Led Sled….with the exception of Rex.

TR: What bikes have been your favorite, or does a single bike stand out and why? Pat: Whiskey Bent and Mercury. Whiskey Bent was pretty advanced at the time, monumental. Mercury was built for my brother Jeff. Jeff is really who got me into bikes, so I set the bar high and just wanted to go over the top on that one. The Chop Off bike for the Smoke Out was a super cool bike, and then there is Impaler. Impaler was just cool. It was different. It was the first crazy bike I had built. TR: What are your favorite past-times or hobbies? Pat: Just socializing and dirt bikes. I love racing dirt bikes. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Pat: Feels good and very humbling. Starting out the way I did and seeing your dreams materialize, its just crazy. This is the hardest I have ever worked, at the same time, don’t feel like I’ve worked in 10 years. TR: Discovery Channel bike build-off opportunity, how exciting is that? Pat: We were contacted by Discovery. We’re in the mix and will definitely happen eventually. It’s not the highlight of your career, but it is certainly one of them. Anyone, from garages to shops, would definitely think it’s cool to build a bike for Discovery. ThunderRoadsOhio.com

TR: Any special thanks to people or shops out there you feel helped Led Sled Customs reach this level of success?

With 10 years down and countless accomplishments, we are definitely excited to see what the next ten years have in store for Led Sled Customs. Hell, maybe I will end up doing his 20-year interview…. Keep the shiny side up, \m/ DMFB \m/ Additional photos courtesy Led Sled Customs

Make it look like a hotrod, and set it on fire! After some deliberation, we put a plan together. The bike presented many challenges, sleepless nights, along with countless hours; but was successfully transformed from just another bike to the show stopper she is today. Definitely one of our personal favorites. The bike was disassembled, stripped, primed, blocked

and sealed. We then shot House of Kolor Tuxedo Black along with two coats of clear. After it was color sanded, the bike and trailer had to be mocked back up to lay out the flames. The goal was to make it look as though it was catching on fire in the front, to a full on blaze at the end. Keeping the flames flowing, while not interfering with emblems, brackets, as well as the luggage rack was a very tedious process. Once the flames were laid out and flowed the way they should, it was disassembled again and taped off. The flames were shot with three basic colors. House of Kolor Canary Yellow, Hugger Orange, and Ferrari Red. The colors were cut down and custom mixed by Danny Brown. Once the flames were painted, two more coats of clear were added and clear sanded flat. Shane Syx worked his magic and pinstriped the flames. For final clear, three coats were added (and you guessed it) clear sanded flat. At that point, the bike was buffed to perfection and reassembled. I would like to give a special thanks to Chris Elliot for all of his hard work, as well as a thank you to Roger Schroer and Doug Shade for their contributions to this project. -After Hours Speedshop

tech tips:

Part 1 : Voltage and Amperage

water pressure remains very close to 12 psi, and there is excess volume capacity.

By Scott Maclean, Goldwingdocs.com Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

Water and Turbine open valve.

I see a lot of people who seem to be afraid to touch the electrical parts of their bikes - and to me, that’s the easiest thing to fix. A lot of the fear is based on a lack of knowledge. Let me try to help. Part 1: Voltage and Amperage This voltage and amperage stuff is simple if you equate it to water: voltage = water pressure, amperage = water volume. In order to move a large volume of water, you need a big pipe (i.e. a thick wire). On the other hand, you can have any amount of pressure (voltage) you want, regardless of pipe (wire) size. You can put 10,000 psi of water pressure into a pipe the size of a straw. Similarly, you can put 10,000 volts of electricity into a wire the size of a human hair. Of course, if the wall of the pipe isn’t strong enough to contain 10,000 psi of pressure, it will rupture, and water will spray out. Similarly, if the thin wire doesn’t have strong enough insulation, voltage can “spray” through the insulation and arc (a big spark) to a nearby grounded point. But for this example, let’s say we have a standard 3/4” household water pipe. We have 12 psi of water pressure behind it, and it is capable of moving a volume of 20 ounces of water per second. At the end of the pipe is connected a small water-driven turbine wheel. This turbine wheel, at maximum capacity, can utilize 15 oz of water per second. In the middle of the pipe is a valve, which is turned off. The pressure is still 12 psi, and the volume is zero, because no water is flowing.

Now let’s put a second turbine on the end of the pipe, in addition to the first one. The two turbines combined can utilize 30 oz of water per second. However, the water supply is only capable of supplying 20 oz per second. As a result, each turbine gets only 10 oz per second. Another important thing happens: the water pressure DROPS. The full 12 psi of water pressure is only available when NO water is being consumed. As more and more water is being consumed, the pressure available to push it through the pipe drops slightly. When we get to the point where the devices consuming the water can consume more water than can be supplied, the pressure drops dramatically.

Water and two turbines - open valve.

Now let’s close the valve halfway. The volume of the water drops to 10 oz per second, because that is all the valve will allow through. The turbines are still demanding 15 oz per second each - but now they are each only getting 5 oz per second - which might not even be enough to spin them. The water pressure in the pipe between the valve and the turbines will be getting close to zero.

Water and two turbines - semiclosed valve.

Water and Turbine Closed Valve

Next, let’s look at this exact same scenario, as it applies to electricity: Then the valve is opened wide, so there is no restriction. Water flows into the turbine at 15 oz per second, because that is the maximum capacity that it can consume. Because we are not utilizing the full capacity of the water supply, the 74

Instead of a water pipe, we have a 14 gauge wire. Instead of 12 psi of water, we have a battery, supplying 12 volts of electricity. Instead of a capacity of 20 oz per second of water, the battery is capable of supplying 20 amps of electrical

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

electricity 101 electricity. One other thing happens: the thing impeding the flow heats up, from friction. This actually happens in the water valve as well, but it’s practically undetectable, because the water flow carries the heat away. In the electrical world, the resistor (or connector, or wire) heats up. And as the resistor heats up, it starts resisting the flow of current even more. A good example of this is the infamous “three yellow wires” connecting the stator to the rectifier in our four-cylinder Wings. The connectors get dirty, and start acting as a resistor. As a result, they heat up, and eventually get hot enough to melt the connectors.

current. At the end of the wire, is connected a small electric motor. This motor, when under full load, can draw 15 amps. In the middle of the wire is a switch, which is turned off. There is still 12 volts available, but the amperage is zero, because no current is flowing. Then the switch is turned on, so there is no restriction. Electricity starts flowing into the electric motor at 15 amps, because that is the maximum current that it can draw. Because we are not utilizing the full capacity of the battery, the voltage remains very close to 12 volts, and there is excess current capacity. Now let’s put a second electric motor on the end of the wire, in addition to the first one. The two motors together can draw 30 amps of current. However, the battery is only capable of supplying 20 amps. As a result, each motor draws only 10 amps. Another important thing happens: the voltage DROPS. Full voltage is only available when NO power is being consumed. As more and more power is being consumed, the voltage available to push it through the pipe drops slightly. When the devices consuming the power can consume more current than can be supplied, the voltage drops dramatically. Now instead of a switch, let’s put a resistor - which is the same as a partly-closed valve. The current flowing in the wire drops to 10 amps, because that is all the resistor will allow through. The electric motors are still requiring 15 amps each - but now they are each only getting 5 amps - which might not even be enough to spin them under load. The voltage between the resistor and the motors will be getting close to zero. You can see the parallels. In the real world, instead of a resistor, it could be a frayed wire, a dirty connector, a corroded terminal, or any of a number of other things that impede the flow of Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Let’s look at it as it applies to the starter motor. You have a battery, supplying 12 volts, and capable of supplying 300 amps (for short bursts). You have a wire going through the solenoid (essentially just a switch), and then to the starter motor, which can consume lots of amps (I don’t know the exact amount, let’s say it’s 200). You hit the starter button, it closes the solenoid, allowing the current to flow to the starter. It, under load (because it’s turning the engine), draws 200 amps, and everything is fine. However, now let’s say the solenoid is faulty - it is acting as a resistor. It is restricting the amount of current available to the starter to say, 150 amps. Because the starter is demanding 200, and only 150 is being given to it, the voltage drops considerably. If you attach a voltmeter, you will see close to a full 12 volts BEFORE the solenoid, and something more like 6 or 7 volts AFTER the solenoid. Now you know the solenoid is the problem. And as to why a free-spinning starter tells you nothing? Electric motors draw almost nothing when run with no load. They draw the MOST current when they are stopped dead. The faster they spin (meaning the less load they have to turn), the less current they draw. So if you hook up your freespinning starter to your starting system, press the button, and everything sits happily at 12 volts - well, that’s because the starter is only drawing 5 amps of current, well within the capacity of whatever the thing is that is acting as a resistor (in our example, the solenoid). And lastly, why should you not run your starter for more than a few seconds when starting your motorcycle? The windings (coils of wire) inside it, that act as a giant electromagnet, causing it to spin - are basically one giant resistor. And remember what happens to resistors when a lot of current is being pulled through them? They get hot. And in this case, we’re talking 200 amps, which is an enormous amount of current, so your starter gets very hot, very fast. Give it some time to cool off before trying again.

The Arrogant Lunge Triumph T100R Bobber Geof Baldwin, www.returnofthecaferacers.com Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

It’s been a while since I’ve paid Japan a visit in this column, but this beauty of a Bobber from Arrogant Lunge in Yokohama is certainly worth a look. As would be expected the Arrogant Triumph Bobber is as unique as any bike we’ve seen roll out of a Japanese custom workshop and it certainly isn’t a ride suited for the self-conscious or shy.

78

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

At the heart of the bike is a 500cc Triumph T100R motor stripped back to the bare essentials. Bolted to the head is a pair of open ended, custom made pipes shaped to follow the lines of the engine casing and coated in ceramic white. The bolt on hardtail replaces the original rear end without the need for cutting or welding and a single, unsprung (ouch!) seat places the riders rear end inches from the action. Style wise the bike is a lane splitter through and through. The tiny handlebars sit no wider than the foot pegs and its number plate has been positioned as close to the rear rubber as possible. To drop some more weight the front fender was removed and the rear swapped for an alloy item left raw to match the engine casings. The tiny, modified peanut tank received a sixties style custom paint job in keeping with the lane splitter/ bobber style with plenty of airbrushed and pinstriped magic laid down before copious layers of clear.

“ARROGANT LUNGE SADISTIC SPEED” I know that this bike certainly won’t be something that everyone will appreciate but they say that about the Mona Lisa too. If the name of their workshop has any relevance I’m pretty sure they don’t really care what we think anyway...I’m not so sure about the lunging part though?

Armed Citizens an Answer to Terrorism? The head of INTERPOL says they might be. by Jeff Knox

– to make the biggest headlines possible by creating the most emotional impact. Not long ago, the easiest way to do that was to hijack or plant a bomb on an airplane. The natural vulnerability of a few hundred, unarmed people in an oversized aluminum can hurtling through the sky at 600 miles an hour was an obvious choice because just a little damage to the aircraft or the pilots would almost guarantee the deaths of everyone on board. Increased security has reduced the odds of success though, so terrorists have shifted their focus. The attack in Mumbai, India a few years ago demonstrated the effectiveness of a smallscale, military-style assault on an unarmed population (see our past column, “The Siege of Mumbai”). The Kenya attack used Mumbai as its blueprint. Unlike the 9-11 attacks, an assault like Mumbai and Westgate requires little training, skill or preparation. All it takes is people willing to do the deed, and some easily acquired armaments.

The head of the international police organization INTERPOL created a minor stir recently when he suggested that armed civilians might be a more realistic answer to the evolving trend of terrorists attacking “soft targets” like shopping malls, schools, and public events, than trying to “harden” those areas with more physical barriers and police officers. While the comments have been picked up by some conservative media and the rights movement, they have been roundly ignored by the traditional media, MISSION: Buckeye Firearms Association is a grassroots political not just in the US, but worldwide. You can action committee (PAC) dedicated bet that his comments won’t be ignored to defending and advancing the by the statist authorities at the UN and right of Ohio citizens to own and the White House though. I think it is very use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, likely that this very prominent, popular, competition, and recreation. We and effective law enforcement official will work to elect pro-gun candidates soon find himself under fire for all sorts and lobby for pro-gun legislation. of seemingly unrelated matters, and in a Buckeyefirearms.org relatively short time, be looking for a new job. It is simply not politically acceptable INTERPOL chief Noble pointed out that for anyone within the “circle of trust” to al Qaeda had recently issued a call for be trusting of the common people. Taking a public position “brothers to strike soft targets, to do it in small groups.” As he in favor of armed civilians over expansion of police presence said, it puts police in a difficult position. “How do you protect and powers is unlikely to go unpunished. soft targets? That’s really the challenge. You can’t have armed In an interview with ABC News, which was reported on ABC’s web site, but, so far as I have been able to find, not aired on the television network, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said that in free societies, governments have only two viable options for addressing attacks on civilians: “One is to say we want an armed citizenry; you can see the reason for that,” he said alluding to the positive impact of a few civilian gun owners during the assault and siege on the Westgate Mall in Kenya last month. “Another is to say the enclaves are so secure that in order to get into the soft target you’re going to have to pass through extraordinary security.” Security that he indicated would be unfeasibly prohibitive in costs of both money and liberty. During a press conference at the opening of the 82nd body, Noble commented that the Westgate Mall attack was an example of how terrorism is evolving as security evolves. As security has become more stringent at high-profile, potential terrorist targets like airports, major commerce centers, and embassies, terrorists have been shifting toward “soft targets” like schools, theaters, and shopping malls. This isn’t really so much a new trend, as a progression. History is rife with examples of terrorists and “resistance fighters” shifting from hardened military and government targets to “soft” civilian targets as a means of attracting more attention, and wreaking more havoc. History shows the same trend among demented mass murderers who want to go out as infamous celebrities by running up the most gut-wrenching body-counts.

police forces everywhere.” In a private interview with ABC Noble expanded on the theme. “Ask yourself: If that was Denver, Colorado, if that was Texas, would those guys have been able to spend hours, days, shooting people randomly?” Noble told ABC. “What I’m saying is it makes police around the world question their views on gun control. It makes citizens question their views on gun control. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is an armed citizenry more necessary now than it was in the past with an evolving threat of terrorism?’ This is something that has to be discussed.” “For me it’s a profound question,” he continued. “People are quick to say ‘gun control, people shouldn’t be armed,’ etc., etc. I think they have to ask themselves: ‘Where would you have wanted to be? In a city where there was gun control and no citizens armed if you’re in a Westgate mall, or in a place like Denver or Texas?’” Valid questions which I’m sure most reporters will continue to ignore or dance around. In the conclusion of their report, ABC took a dig at Noble’s comments by pointing out that the gun control debate in the US had recently been ignited by mass shootings, including one in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, just outside of Denver. What the report failed to note is that the movie theater where the massacre took place was posted “No Guns.” Not only that, the demented murderer passed by at least two other theaters

that were closer to his home, but which were not posted “Gun Free Zones.” Perhaps that was coincidence or there is some other explanation, but on the face of it, it suggests that Noble is on to something. It is frankly astonishing to me that Noble has taken this position publicly. I hope he will pursue this line of reasoning and that he can hold onto his position at INTERPOL long enough for his philosophy to spread through the agency and into police agencies they deal with. When victims become first-responders, criminals will become more cautious. ABC and the media can dismiss these ideas, but I’m not expecting terrorists to storm the Phoenix Cabela’s store any time soon.

Armed Citizens Respond to Terrorist Attack at Mall NAIROBI, Kenya — On September 21, 2013, unidentified gunmen attacked the upmarket Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The attack, which lasted until September 24th, resulted in at least 72 deaths, including 61 civilians, 6 Kenyan soldiers, and 4 attackers. The attackers held hostages and later engaged in gun battles with Kenyan security forces. Over 200 people were reportedly wounded in the mass shooting, with all of the gunmen killed. When the first shots of automatic gunfire burst out, Raju, a member of a local gun club, was waiting in line in a bank at the Westgate shopping mall. He crouched down, pulled out his phone and feverishly pecked out a text message: “I am inside and I can confirm this is not a robbery.”

Thousands of Ring-Necked Pheasants Released Throughout Ohio COLUMBUS, OH – More than 15,000 ring-necked pheasants will be released at 27 Ohio public hunting areas this fall to provide additional hunting opportunities across the state, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). “Ohioans have enjoyed more than 100 years of pheasants in Ohio,” said ODNR Director James Zehringer. “We are dedicated to increasing opportunities for Ohio hunters and continuing the strong tradition of game hunting for many generations to come.” Pheasants will be released Friday, Oct. 18, and Friday, Oct. 25, prior to the small-game weekends for youth hunters. Hunters age 17 and younger can hunt statewide for rabbit, pheasant and all other legal game in season during two designated weekends, Oct. 19-20 and Oct. 26-27. Ohio’s small game hunting season begins on Friday, Nov. 1, with pheasant releases to take place Thursday, Oct. 31, and on the evening of Friday, Nov. 8. The final release of the year is scheduled to provide improved pheasant hunting opportunities throughout the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and will take place the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 27. Beach City Wildlife Area in Tuscarawas County will not be an in-season release location this year. The habitat at Beach City Wildlife Area is no longer suitable for grassland dependent species such as the ring-necked pheasant.

Within minutes, his fellow gun club members, neighborhood watch volunteers, off-duty police officers and other armed Samaritans rushed to the mall. They found no command center, no SWAT team — in short, no coordinated government response as heavily armed Islamist militants shot civilians at will. Amongst the unofficial responders in this incident was a former British Royal Marine that worked in the area as a security contractor. Armed with only a handgun, he engaged the terrorists and made multiple entries into the mall to save injured hostages and escort others out. He is credited with saving at least 100 lives himself. Youth and regular pheasant hunting within the Ringneck Ridge Area in Sandusky County requires a free permit from the Sandusky County Park District. For more information regarding the issuance of these free hunting permits, contact the Sandusky County Park District Office at 419-334-4495. Pheasant hunting season opens Friday, Nov. 1, and remains open through Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, with a daily bag limit of two rooster (male) birds. No hens (females) can be killed. Females are all brown while the males have a green head, a red and brown body and long tail feathers. Statewide pheasant hunting hours are sunrise to sunset. ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at www.ohiodnr.gov.

Bureau of Un-Intelligence

In this day and age, one might think that Criminal Profiling by Law Enforcement in these United States would have gone by the wayside. We still hear of wretched tales of profiling by Law Enforcement and TSA Agents with regard to those of foreign decent, and those in our Ethnic Communities. But let me tell you first hand, it’s alive and well with regards to those doing nothing more than wearing a patch. Very recently, I and 8 of my brothers and a couple of Ole Ladies were headed to a Halloween party about 2 hours from our Clubhouse. We piled in our club van and a second vehicle behind us. The trip was fairly uneventful as we traveled down the highway, until we stopped at a gas station that is. Several of us got out of the vehicle and entered the gas station to load up on Cigs and take a bathroom break. Still pretty uneventful. I noticed a man leaning on a stack of soda cases at the rear of the store eating a sandwich. He didn’t fit the scene of someone just stopping in for some gas station grub, but I didn’t give it a lot more thought. As we existed the building and were chatting about the final leg of our trip I noticed a Sherriff cruiser pull into the lot and stop behind the building. I then saw the aforementioned guy come out a side exit and go straight around the back of the building where the cruiser had stopped. Again, no big deal. We weren’t doing anything wrong. So we all loaded up and pulled back out onto the highway. The van and our Brother and his Ole Lady behind us in their pickup merged into normal traffic flow, and were all traveling right at the speed limit. Of course we noticed that the cruiser had pulled out about 15 seconds behind us and was following. As we were traveling we started noticing cruisers in the center median starting to stack up down the highway, but we had heard there was a huge college Halloween party on this major thoroughfare and there was a heavy police presence looking for impaired drivers. Well it was about 4 miles when we saw the lights go on behind our brother in the pickup. We were exiting in another mile anyways so we figured we’d just wait at the exit. We almost made it that far. We didn’t notice that all the other cruisers that had filed in behind the one who pulled over our brother, but as we signaled to exit at the bottom of the ramp, our tail lit up like a UFO landing! Seven cruisers and one unmarked truck. When the Lady Deputy walked up to the driver’s side and our probate rolled the window down I immediately 84

announced that there were weapons in the vehicle, as well as authorized Concealed Carry Permits in conjunction with said weapons. She asked how many and a few raised their hand. I also handed her our valid registration and current insurance card. I was in the passenger seat and noticed a guy with a pony tail and wearing a flannel shirt standing near my door. I rolled my window down and asked him if I could help him with something, and he presented his badge on a chain from under his shirt. I again asked him if there was something he needed. He asked if I knew why we were pulled over. I said no. He said that our front license plate was in the front window instead of mounted to the front of the vehicle. I told him I’m pretty sure state law requires it be “prominently displayed on the front of the vehicle” not “Mounted on the front of the vehicle”. He responded “You’re arguing a technicality”, to which I told him the legitimacy of this entire stop may come down to a “technicality”. I asked if that’s the case, then why they pulled over the guy following us. He said asked “Isn’t he with you”? I said yes, but he’s not in the damn vehicle with us is he? (I later found out from our brother that the excuse they used was the 2 inch tow ball mounted on the bumper hitch of the pickup, which has been there for about 15 years “Obstructed the view of his license plate.” Both stops were total BS!!! The undercover had overheard the Lady Deputy call on the radio for a CCW Weapons check. He said he needed everyone in the van, all 8 of us to put our hands above our head and not to move them. Hmm.. seems odd that I announced, as is required with the CCW law that we had weapons, and that we had permits and he immediately reacts as if we were going to pull a gun on him. Hey Dip$&it, if one of us was going to shoot you, it certainly wouldn’t be AFTER I told you we had weapons! So he pulls me out of the van, takes my weapon out of my vest (after going through every other pocket of my vest “searching for the weapon” when I told him exactly what pocket it was in). Then he allows me to give him my CCW Permit and ID. During which time all of this is transpiring, we are surrounded by Adrenaline junkies in their Tactical outfits like it’s some checkpoint in Afghanistan! So, the legal IDs must not have been sufficient regarding us behaving within our rights as an American Citizen, because they then decided to extricate everyone, one by one and search everyone for weapons. After finding none, they tell us all to get back in the van. The man in obvious charge

then proceeds to tell us all that if we have any illegal drugs on us, or in the vehicle to give them up now and they “will dump them on the side of the road and let us be on way”. LMFAO!!! Yeah deputy Dumba$$, this is my first rodeo! We acknowledged his offer, but to his disappointment proclaimed that we had no illegal drugs. So out came the drug dog. He told us to all sit in the van, roll up the windows and the dog would run around the vehicle. Well, I’m no dog trainer, but I watched the dog circle the vehicle twice. It never so much as stopped, or even sneezed. But of course, they open my door and proclaim the dog’s victory in sniffing out drugs in our vehicle. (As if I didn’t expect that) So, out we all came again, one by one. Me first of course. Commander Deputy Dumba$$ proceeds to scold me telling me that he warned us that if they found illegal drugs the three with CCWs were going to jail. I disappointed him again by telling him there were no illegal drugs. So another 20 minutes while they searched everyone us, and the entire vehicle, only to….wait for it… not find one illegal drug. So after an hour and twenty minutes, wasting the resources of 12 officers and a drug dog, nothing. It seems to me that I would ask for my money back on the purchase of that drug dog. In fact, makes me wonder if anyone else has been convicted by drug dogs, if they’ve ever asked how many false positives their dog may have given? If they even keep records of their failures, which I doubt. We were “rewarded” by telling us we could go on our way, you know, our God Given Right as an American Citizen in the first place. I wonder had we of been a group of off duty officers on our way to an FOP Halloween party, carrying Legal Weapons, or perhaps a group of preachers with CCWs headed to church to pray for their souls, would they have gone to this extreme? My guess is no. Sad knowing that plenty of Cops and Preachers are sitting in prison for more heinous crimes than us driving down the highway, sober, not carrying any drugs or illegal weapons. So rest easy my fellow Americans, knowing that your streets are safer because the Bureau of Un-Intelligence is out there harassing and violating the civil rights of American Citizens in the name of Justice, simply because we wear a vest with the same picture on it. By the way, this is called profiling, and it is illegal. So who’s the criminal? Tabasco Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

CHRISTMAS PRIME RIB w/ HOMEMADE CREAMY HORSERADISH SAUCE; MADE SUPER SIMPLE

Some folks get so intimidated when cooking a Prime Rib, but it’s actually so simple and once in the oven, you get to get on with other side dishes and just forget. 1 4-6 lb. Rib Roast - will prob. have 4 or 5 bones Preheat oven to 150 degrees for medium or 135 degrees for medium rare. You’ll need a meat thermometer also. Rub your Prim Rib thoroughly all over with your hands with quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Don’t cheap out on essentials. Make a rub in a small bowl, combine: A small palmful of each; kosher salt, coarse ground black pepper, dry mustard, dry coffee powder, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, corriander and basil. If there’s any extra Rub left over, just put in a small plastic container in fridge and it’s good for up to 3 months. Remember....always rub dry spices between fingers to refreshen them. Place Rib Roast in a heavy turkey pan with sides, like a lasagna pan with thermometer placed in the middle, between 2 bones.. Put just a thin coat of Olive Oil in bottom of pan and place fat side down. Cook 2-1/4 hrs. for medium-rare with big pink center or 2-3/4 hours for medium with a tinge of pink. SUPER SIMPLE CREAMY HORSERADISH SAUCE So, take your Prime Rib out of the pan and place on tin foil and wrap it up good to let it “rest” for 15 minutes. Put the pan over a large burner on your stove and add 2 cups of beef broth over medium-high heat and take a wooden spoon and really make sure you get all those little pieces of stuck-on goodies from the Prime Rib. Add salt & pepper to taste, 1/2 cup of sour cream, 1/2 cup of mayo, chopped scallions, 1 Tbl. of Grey Poupon mustard and 1/4 cup of White Balsamic vinegar and 1/2 cup of the prepared horseradish sauce in any condiment aisle. Whisk together over medium-low heat until completely emulsified. Let it get all bubbley hot and transfer to a gravy boat for guests to pour over their fabulous thick-cut slabs of perfect mediumrare or medium Prime Rib. Do something different this Christmas.......forget the turkey or ham, go elegant and first class with Perfection Prime Rib. Your Family and friends will be talking about it well into the New Year!

CHRISTMAS ELVIS CHEESE BISKITS

4 Ozs. Lard (very cold large marble sized) 2 Cups of Cake Flour * Makes lighter, flakier biskits 2 tsps. Baking Powder 1/2 tsp. Baking Soda 1/2 tsp. Kosher Salt 3/4 cup Buttermilk Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In large glass or ceramic bowl combine cake flour, baking soda & powder with salt. Add cubed lard and blend mixture by hand crushing mix between your fingertips as if making a dough. Continue mixing while slowly adding buttermilk. Do not overwork the dough; you want them to be kinda’ lumpy but ingredients mixed. Right at this point, add shredded cheese of your liking (this is not in Michael’s recipe but I love cheese biscuits, so now’s the time if you do also) work rough shredded cheese in fast and lightly. Spray a wooden spoon with butter spray and drop big dollops onto a Silt Sheet on a baking sheet leaving room for them to spread out as they cook. You should have enough for 12 biscuits, each about the size of a peach. Bake until lightly browned, about 15 minutes.

GRAHAM & PRETZEL CRUSTED CHEESE CAKE W/ SANTA’S SURPRISE TOPPING

1-1/2 Cup of Salted Pretzels 1-1/2 Cup of Cinnamon Graham Crackers 1/4 Cup of Granulated Sugar 3/4 Stick of Butter A Pinch of Salt Blend all this in a food processor until a slightly pliable texture to line the bottom of a glass 13x9 glass baking dish. Be sure and bring up the sides as much as mix will allow, while still keeping a good amount on the bottom as your crust. Filling: 4 8 oz.Tubs of Philly Whipped Cream Cheese 1 Cup of Sour Cream 1 Cup of Granulated Sugar 5 Large Eggs; added one at a time 1 super-full tsp. Vanilla extract Mix all this with a hand mixer until thoroughly mixed, but not overly mixed. Pour filling over your crust and bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour Slow & Low, heat 1 Bottle of your favorite Preserves; Strawberry, Blackberry, Blueberry, Peach....whatevs, and pour all over top of cheesecake and take a flat cake spatula to smooth out evenly. Let cool on counter for another 30 minutes to set up and then let get totally cold in fridge for a few hours. Cut into squares and serve with homemade whip cream. You are going to love this simple crust. If you don’t have a food processor put into a zip-lock bag, unzipped a tad for air to escape, and press down w/ cast iron heavy skillet to process old style.

It was coming up to Christmas and Sammy asked his mum if he could have a new bike. So, she told him that the best idea would be to write to Santa Claus. But Sam, having just played a vital role in the school nativity play, said he would prefer to write to the baby Jesus. So his mum told him that would be fine. Sam went to his room and wrote ‘ Dear Jesus, I have been a very good boy and would like to have a bike for Christmas.’ But he wasn’t very happy when he read it over. So he decided to try again and this time he wrote ‘Dear Jesus, I’m a good boy most of the time and would like a bike for Christmas.’ He read it back and wasn’t happy with that one either. He tried a third version. ‘Dear Jesus, I could be a good boy if I tried hard and especially if I had a new bike.’ He read that one too, but he still wasn’t satisfied. So, he decided to go out for a walk while he thought about a better approach. After a short time he passed a house with a small statue of the Virgin Mary in the front garden. He crept in, stuffed the statue under his coat, hurried home and hid it under the bed. Then he wrote this letter. ‘Dear Jesus, If you want to see your mother again, you’d better send me a new bike.’ _____________________________________________________ ‘A woman went into a post office to buy some stamps for her Christmas cards. What denomination do you want ? asked the lady at the counter. ‘Good God!’ she replied, Has it come to this? I suppose you’d better give me twenty Catholic and twenty Presbyterian. _____________________________________________________

A reindeer walked into a pub, strolled up to the bar and ordered a pint of lager. Completely unphased, the barman poured out the lager and passed it to the reindeer, who handed over a ten dollar bill. As he handed over a few coins for change, the barman said “I have to say, you’re first reindeer I’ve seen in here.”The reindeer studied the change very carefully and said. “Tell you what sunshine, at these prices I’m also the last reindeer you’re going to see in here.” _____________________________________________________ Dear Abby, I’ve never written to you before but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision. I’ve suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs… phone rings but if I answer the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, “ Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.” I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always walks down the drive. Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her. I decided I was going to park my BMW R1150 GS motorcycle right next to the garage and hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my bike, that I noticed that the valve covers on my engine seemed to be leaking a little oil. So my question to you Dear Abby is: Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it to the dealer?
