This issue continues our effort to broaden the scope of the magazine as we feature our second Adventure Bike - The Triumph Tiger 800XC. Look for more of these rugged touring bikes and journals of rides off the beat and path in upcoming issues. We also introduce three new features to the magazine in this issue, all of which will we expect to become regular fixtures. Nick Gonatas from the Warren Harley-Davidson Racing will be updating us monthly on how his team is doing and giving us a little insight into the workings of a Championship Caliber Drag Bike Team. We are also priviledged to introduce Pat Downey as our new resident Paint Guru, as we launch our custom paint column - Paint Shop. And lastly, on a fun note, we unveil a fun monthly contest dubbed “Where in Ohio?!@?”. We show you pictures of favorite riding stops and landmarks from around Ohio - and you tell us where they are. And for those that really have it down - we are giving out prizes! I’d also like to mention that this magazine includes more then a few ads, and we aren’t ashamed of that either. In fact, we are rather proud of it. The ads represent those businesses that have believed enough in our magazine to help support it. They are the ones that cover the costs and make all of this possible. We also believe that their messages are important as well. We seek to balance out the magazine, content and advertising - but we do consider our ads part of the TRO appeal.

You may have noticed something a little different about this issue. Yes, those are snowmobiles on the cover. Don’t worry - you are still holding Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag in your hands. As I promised, we are looking to cover the entire Ohio riding scene; and when the snow flies - that means sleds!
Our advertisers represent local bars and shops, dealerships, and retail shops. In many cases they are the ones hosting the bike nights, rallies, and rides that you want to attend. They are also offering the services and products that you need. In addition to the local scene, we welcome advertisers from across the country that wish to share something with you. It might be a notice regarding campgrounds in Sturgis, a party in Daytona, or a Rally in Texas. Or maybe they have a product you might be interested in - supports for your saddle bags (www.papabags.com/tr) or a better pair of sunglasses (www.outlaweyewear. com). Regardless of the specifics, every ad in this magazine has some relevancy to Ohio riders. Just like any good rally or motorcycle event - the exhibitors and vendors add to the experience. In this case, they also pay for your admission by covering our costs and allowing us to give you the magazine for free. So, please make sure that you thank them by supporting them. Consider their products and services. Consider stopping by their bar or restaurant. And when you do - tell them Thanks! As always - please feel free to email or call me if you have any concerns, thoughts, or suggestions regarding this magazine. We appreciate the input and are always looking to improve. As told by
The Iron Cowboy Show Season Tis the Season! No, not that season - it’s Bike Show Season, as all the indoor shows begin crisscrossing the country and state. Local swap meets and shows also bring everyone together, giving us a chance to hang out and talk bikes in the middle of winter. Things kick off with two of the largest, almost back to back. The Progressive International Bike Show comes to the Cleveland I-X Center, January 25th-27th. This is one of the largest manufacturer’s shows in the country, as all of the big boys come out and show off their stuff! Virtually every motorcycle manufacturer from around the world will be there. And of course, Thunder Roads will be there as well. Check in on our facebook page (www.facebook.com/thunderroadsohio) throughout the month for a chance to win FREE tickets.
According to Steve Menneto, Vice President of Motorcycles at Indian’s parent company, Polaris, “When we acquired the Indian Motorcycle brand in 2011, our strategy was to retain the existing design, quality and high level of detail for which Indian Motorcycle has always been known, while making significant detail improvements in order to satisfy the continued demand from Indian Motorcycle dealers. The Final Edition is an acknowledgment of our gratitude to the team at Kings Mountain for sustaining the Indian Motorcycle story and its heritage as America’s original motorcycle brand.” The 2013 Indian Chief Vintage Final Edition is available for purchase through Indian dealers with a MSRP of $37,599. Amazingly, Ohio does not have an Official Indian Dealer at this time. The closest ones are in Michigan for most of us in Ohio.
Then, February 8th-10th, the Easyrider’s Bike Show Tour comes to Columbus for the Annual Invitational Finals to the series. The BEST OF THE BEST come to town for the chance to win international recognition. Oh, and of course, Thunder Roads will be there! In fact, Thunder Roads Ohio has once again teamed up with Mike Hoover and the Make It Fit Foundation - this time to help out with a Benefit Concert at the Legendary Alarosa Villa featuring Jasmine Cain. The show is “Easyrider Weekend” - Saturday, February 9th. It benefits organizations focused on Autism and Tourettes Syndrome. We are letting you know a little in advance, so you can plan ahead. No excuses accepted!
Indian Unveils The Final Edition Indian Motorcycle unveiled the new model year, 2013 Indian Chief Vintage Final Edition at the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, California on December 7th. This limited edition motorcycle commemorates the end of the Kings Mountain (North Carolina) era of this iconic brand. The Kings Mountain, North Carolina assembly line was transitioned to Polaris’ Spirit Lake, Iowa production facility in 2011. The line was transported and returned to full operation in an astounding eight weeks, and continued to produce new units for the Indian Motorcycle dealer base. The state-of-the-art Spirit Lake plant also manufactures Polaris Rangers and Victory Motorcycles, though each brand is built on its own dedicated assembly line. The 2013 Indian Chief Final Edition comes fully loaded with the World’s Fair-inspired paint scheme of Indian Red, Thunder Black, and Gold Pinstripe; auxiliary driving lamps; black leather solo seat with included detachable passenger seat; windshield; black leather saddlebags; chrome grab rail; leather fringe; engine guards; and chrome fender tips. Powered by the PowerPlus 105ci engine, this historic 2013 model will be manufactured in an extremely limited run and wears a customdesigned, numbered emblem on the frame to commemorate the brand’s historic achievements. 6

New Members of the TRO Team
In
Thunder Roads Ohio is pleased to announce the addition of several new players to the team. Heading into 2013, one of the highest priorities of the new management team is to expand coverage across the state and further develop the production side of the team. These three additions help achieve these goals. Bob Mazur Bob Mazur joins the TRO Team as a Staff Photographer. Bob has been a previous contributor, working on the Kamikazee Jump feature from earlier this year and last month’s Garage Build. Bob has a passion for photography and we are looking forward to working with him on a regular basis. You can see some of Bob’s work in this month’s center calendar and in the Triumph Tiger feature. Melanie “Firedoll” Verdream
Bob Mazur Thunder Roads Photographer
Thunder Roads is pleased to officially welcome Melanie to the Thunder Roads Ohio Team as both a Staff Photographer and
Road Rep. Melanie has been exploring the music world with her Firedoll Photography - but she caught our attention when we crossed paths at some bike events last summer. Melanie will also be serving as a Northeast Ohio Road Rep, representing TRO in the Youngstown / Warren areas. If you have a motorcycle friendly business in the area, let us know if you’d like Melanie to stop by! (Email - info@thunderroadsohio.com)
bob stelzer
addition to assisting the Central Ohio TRO Team, Bob will also be coordinating the 2013 Thunder Roads Ohio Garage Build Contest. Look for more information on this in an upcoming issue.
We are still building the Team! We did an open invitation here in the magazine and on our facebook page for riders to contact us if they might be interested in serving as a Road Rep or Contributor to the magazine. The response was overwhelming. Literally, we were overwhelmed in every sense. We are still scheduling interviews and going through the information that we received. So, don’t despair if you sent us stuff and you haven’t heard back from us. We would also encourage you to shoot us an email and let us know you’re still interested. We are in the process of bringing on new Editors and Area Managers, so we hope to get caught up shortly. You can still send us some information if you’re interested in either contributing or serving as a Road Rep. Just email us at info@thunderroadsohio.com Please include a little information about yourself as well.
Bob Stelzer It seems as though Bob Stelzer has been on the TRO team for melanie aka “firedoll” a while, but we’ve just recently made it official as Bob becomes a TRO Road Rep for the Columbus / Zanesville / Lancaster area. He and his brother Jaramie transformed our Cleveland CycleWerks Heist into a custom TRO Bobber this past year. Bob brings a wealth of riding experience and a technical background. In his own words - “I started riding when I was five years old and have had that passion burning in me ever since. Stock has never been my thing, so I tend to modify every thing I own to put my personal stamp on it. I met Derek when TRO sponsored my shops grand opening a while back and I knew right away that we would make a good team. The biker lifestyle and brotherhood is something that everyone should experience in there lives, and I look forward to meeting and hanging out with all my new TRO brothers and sisters.” - Bob Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

SLEDS! Winter Mounts for Ohio Riders!
A
s colder weather forces most of us to put our bikes away for the winter, a large number of riders turn to a different mount for the snowy season - the snowmobile, or “sled” to those in the know.
Much like motorcycle riding, snowmobiling is considered a great chance to get out and enjoy the outdoors - relaxing and escaping stress from daily routines. Unlike road cruisers, snowmobiles are designed for tearing across fields and trails - without the constraints of pavement or civilization. Especially when you consider that the alternative is often riding the couch, snowmobiles provide a great winter activity. Snowmobiling is also considered a great family activity, with young children able to join their parents as they head out to explore the white outdoors. The history of the modern day recreational snowmobile is fairly recent, however, over the snow travel goes back many years. What is amazing though is that man actually flew before he could master snow travel. The Wright Brothers Flew in 1903, the very first motorized vehicle that was built to go in snow wasn’t built until 1908. That was the Lombard log hauler designed and built in Waterville, Maine. It was a large cumbersome machine that resembled a steam locomotive, only it had a half track design and front skis. In 1909, a man by the name of O.C. Johnson built an over the snow machine that actually went on top of the snow, sometimes. It was roughly ten feet long, used a track design, “one lunger engine”, and it steered, well almost.

Arctic Cat celebrates it’s 50th Anniversary in 2012. Then in 1913 Virgil White, a Ford dealer in New Hampshire, invented a track and ski unit conversion for the Model T Ford. This invention was almost simultaneously invented in Waterville, Maine with neither man having knowledge of the other. Mr. White was the first to use the word “snowmobile”. Early in the winter of 1922, fifteen year old J. Armand Bombardier designed a wind driven sleigh with a Model T engine. This was to be the first of many snowmobiles designed by Bombardier. One of the most amazing snowmobiles was built in 1924 in Sayner, Wisconsin. It was the invention of a gentleman by the name of Earl Eliason. Mr. Eliason called it his motor toboggan, and that basically was what it was. It was a wooden toboggan fitted with two skis, which were steered with ropes, powered by a 2 1/2 horsepower Johnson outboard motor, and was pushed by an endless steel cleated track. The amazing part is that it was a front mounted, liquid cooled engine that used a jack shaft. All these are qualities that are credited to modern day snowmobiles. Mr. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
Eliason patented and manufactured his machine until 1939 when he sold out to F.W.D. Corporation in Canada. F.W.D. made these right thru to 1960.
Snowmobiling On State Parks in Ohio The following state parks have maintained trails for snowmobiles to operate on. Northeast Ohio Geneva State Park, 2 miles of trails Mosquito Lake State Park, 15 miles of trails Punderson State Park, 5 miles of trails West Branch State Park, 20 miles of trails Northwest Ohio East Harbor State Park, 7.5 miles of trailes Central Ohio Alum Creek State Park, 8.5 miles of trails Deer Creek State Park, 17 miles of trails Southwest Ohio Buck Creek State Park, 10 miles of trails Paint Creek State Park, 25 miles of trails Southeast Ohio Barkamp State Park, 9 miles of trails Salt Fork, 19 miles of trails
As time past, a few machines came and went, including Bombardiers, air driven and half track series of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. However it wasn’t until 1954 that the modern day recreational snowmobile was born. David Johnson was a partner with Alan and Edgar Hetteen of Polaris Industries. Mr. Johnson made his design of a snowmobile during a weekend adventure, unknown to the other two partners. This became the very first Polaris, which David was quite proud of. However upon their return, the Hetteen brothers weren’t real pleased with the expenditure of time and effort wasted on something unrelated to their manufacture of farm equipment. They told David to get rid of it, which he did. He sold it, much to their amazement. As the winter progressed through, there were constant problems with the machine and Polaris felt obligated to service it because it was their manufacture. After several trips on snowshoes and literally backpacking the machine out, David convinced the Hetteen brothers to make a second machine for the purpose of pulling out the first one. Thus the early beginnings of continued...

the Polaris Sno Traveler. Polaris built a few machines per year from 1955 to 1957 and then phased out of farm equipment and focused on manufacturing sleds. In 1960, Bombardier invented and began selling what we refer to as the modern snowmobile with a lighter, smaller engine and an open cockpit. These were introduced as the “Ski-Doo” and competitors immediately began copying and developing the new approach. In 1961, Edgar Hetteen founded Polar Manufacturing in Thief River Falls, Minnesota - focusing entirely on snowmobiles. Then a year later, he changed the company name to Artic Cat and focused on developing smaller, more sporty snow machines. Arctic Cat celebrates the brand’s 50th Anniversary in 2012. They celebrated another milestone on August 26, 2010 - when Arctic Cat built it’s 1,000,000th snowmobile. By the 1970’s there were over a hundred snowmobile manufacturers. Most of these were small specialized outfits, and
the largest manufacturers were primarily motorcycle or outboard motor companies looking to capitalize on a new market. The first Harley-Davidson snowmobiles were introduced in 1971. Owned by AMF at the time, the Harley-Davidson sleds were a development of the AMF “Ski-Daddler” line and built at the AMF facility in York, PA. The snowmobile market peaked in 1971, with over half a million sleds being sold. The gasoline crisis of 1973 and subsequent recessions dealt a heavy blow to this largely recreational industry. Many of the smaller companies were put out of business or consumed by the larger companies. Harley-Davidson ended their foray into snowmobiles with the 1975 model year. Sales slowly built back up to around 260,000 units a year in 1997. Today, the snowmobile market is primarily divided between four North American Manufacturers - Arctic Cat, from Minnesota; Bombardier (BRP) Quebec, Canada; Polaris, also in Minnesota; and Yamaha Motor Corporation, headquartered in Cypress, California.

Today there are 5 basic types of snowmobiles: • Entry-level Snowmobile: Entry-level snowmobiles are also often called trail models. These snowmobiles come equipped with engines ranging from 60-70 horsepower. The vehicles are easy to ride and relatively inexpensive. They can be equipped with electric start and reverse for easy starting and maneuvering. These snowmobiles are very light and easy to handle and serve as an inexpensive way to begin snowmobiling. View entry-level models • Performance Snowmobiles: Performance snowmobiles, like performance automobiles, feature slightly higher horsepower engines. The engines generate 85 horsepower and up. These vehicles are slightly heavier than the entry-level vehicles due to engine size differentiation and additional weight related to suspension systems, shock absorbers and more. These vehicles are often equipped with reverse gear and electric start. These vehicles are responsive and performance oriented. View performance models • Touring Snowmobiles: Touring snowmobiles feature a seat configuration that is designed for up to two individuals. The seat configuration features a backrest. Touring models usually include side-mounted mirrors, larger windshields, reverse gear and electric start. These vehicles are larger and heavier than either performance or entry-level snowmobiles and are designed for riding longer distances in comfort. The track length of a touring vehicle is greater. The longer track length cushions the ride, adds stability for two people and provides more comfort and weight. View touring models continued...

• Mountain Snowmobiles: Snowmobiles made specifically for mountain riding are longer and narrower. The vehicle configuration allows for side hilling in mountainous terrain and riding through heavy powder. The vehicles also have specially designed long lug tracks, which allow them to maneuver through heavy, deep powder conditions. These vehicles generally have high horsepower engines, since horsepower is lost at higher elevations. The riding characteristics of a mountain snowmobile generally lend it to better handling abilities in mountain riding than on trail riding. View mountain models
and heavier than other snowmobiles. They function exceptionally well on trails and heavy snow and come equipped with electric start and reverse. They are often used to tow work sleds or toboggans.

14
Just like any motor vehicle, snowmobiles can be purchased new or used from a dealer or through a private owner. When starting off, a licensed dealer can provide a lot of helpful information and be a tremendous resource. (A list of recommended snowmobile dealers is listed in the Biker Friendly Directory.) You can also visit manufacturer’s web sites for a full listing of dealers for their products. When first starting to snowmobile, there are many considerations. If you anticipate riding with others on board, you should plan on getting a

two-person snowmobile. If you anticipate riding on your own, a basic snowmobile with mid-range power should provide a quality ride for you. If you live in a hilly area or plan on taking your sled out to more mountainous areas - a more specialized mountain snowmobile is the best choice. Again, a dealer can help answer questions and assist in selecting the best sled for your needs.

elcome to the Paint Shop, where we take you into the world of custom painting, with focus on airbrushing. This month we will introduce you to the airbrush with a bit of history and the different types of airbrushes that are available. The airbrush as we know it today was invented around the end of the 19th century. The idea or concept of airbrushing has been around since prehistoric times. Blowing pigment or color through a hollow bone could possibly be the first time the concept of an airbrush was put to use. Up until the 1960’s the airbrush was mostly used for photo retouching (now done primarily with the use of a computer) and technical illustration. But then many more uses for this tool were realized. Painting imagery on vans and t-shirts became popular and the capabilities of the airbrush were just starting to be realized. With advances in technology and development of new techniques, the airbrush and the artists themselves have raised the bar with their artwork to a level never before thought possible. Some of the basic differences between types of airbrushes are the action and the feed. The action refers the movement of the trigger. There is a single action and a double action. With the single action, when you press the trigger, you allow paint and air to flow at the same time, similar to the function of a can of spray paint. By pressing down vertically on the trigger, you determine the amount of air that will pass through the brush while the flow or amount of paint that passes through remains consistent. That can be adjusted by changing the components of the brush (a different size needle and nozzle) but you must stop spraying to accomplish this. While there are many uses for a brush of this type, your control is limited as a result of the single action trigger. 18
The double action airbrush offers more control, allowing the user to manipulate both the flow of air and the amount of paint being sprayed. The trigger now has movement both vertically and horizontally. Press down to determine the amount of air needed and pull the trigger back to release the desired amount of paint. Down for air, back for paint. This double action provides the ability to control the flow of air and paint independently. This allows the user to manipulate the spray patterns from the smallest dot, line or shade to much larger, heavier areas of color on the fly without having to change equipment. Feed refers to the way in which the paint travels into the path of the air which will carry it to the surface being painted. There are 3 basic feed styles. Syphon or bottom feed, side feed and gravity feed. The syphon feed airbrush utilizes a bottle or color cup which holds the paint to be sprayed. The jar is attached on the underside of the airbrush and uses the air pressure passing through the brush to pull the paint up from the bottle into the flow of air. Typically a bottom feed brush will need a higher air pressure to create the syphon effect. Some of the advantages of a bottom feed airbrush are that by using the jar or color cup, you have a large amount of paint available which allows spraying for a longer period of time without having to add paint and quick color changes which are accomplished by simply removing one jar and replacing it with another containing the desired color. Side feed airbrushes utilize the same technology as bottom feed with the main difference being that the cup is found on the side of the brush. Some advantages of this model are comfort by not having the bottle directly underneath the brush, better vision of the surface being painted and because the cup is mounted to the side, it can be rotated so the airbrush can be used at any angle (like painting on a ceiling!)
ThunderRoadsOhio.com
Thunder RoadsÂŽ Magazine OHIO
The gravity feed airbrush is exactly that. Gravity is the force that feed paint into the flow of air. There is a reservoir or cup that is located above the airbrush. The paint is placed in the cup and sits in the flow of air. The result of this is that less air pressure is need to get the paint flowing when compared to the syphon feed which needs the additional air pressure to pull the paint into the flow of air. The lower air pressure will allow the airbrush to create finer lines. Some other advantages of the gravity feed airbrush are easy manipulation of the paint being sprayed (if the paint is to thin, just add a few drops more. No need to re-mix an entire bottle like would be necessary with a syphon feed), ease of mixing colors (done in small amounts right in your airbrush) and there is very little wasted material as the user only puts in a small amount of paint at a given time. Well that does it for this month. Now that you know the differences between the different types of airbrushes, next month we will go over the basic materials that you will need to begin airbrushing as well as some practice exercises to get you started. Keep the paint flying! TABG theairbrushguy

THE TRIUMPH TIGER FACTORY
FEATURE
The Triumph Tiger 800XC is a true British “go everywhere” motorcycle that has been machine designed and built for adventures. True to its calling as a tough, durable, and versatile bike, the Tiger 800XC is capable of coping with the demands of off-road riding, thanks to a combination of utilitarian design, powerful engine, and superb handling characteristics. Just as with many of Triumph’s other class-leading machines, the rider can adjust both the handlebar position and seat height of the Tiger 800XC, offering a commanding view above the traffic and a comfortable perch from which to devour the miles. The bike also has a class-leading 5.0 gallon fuel tank that ensures long-distance rides go uninterrupted. Cavernous hard and soft luggage options are available, as is a comprehensive instrumentation that includes a fuel gauge and trip computer. As far as the engine goes, powering the Tiger 800XC is a new long-stroke triple engine that produces an impressive 94 brake horsepower and an extremely accessible 58 lb/ft of torque. With its flat torque curve and gentle power delivery, the Tiger 800XC is a pleasure to ride in even in the most demanding of conditions. Then there’s the aforementioned handling credentials. Longtravel 45mm upside-down front forks and a rear suspension unit all combine with a 21” spoked front wheel to deliver maximum ground clearance and the ability to cope with rough trails. Likewise, a sophisticated anti-lock braking system is available as an option and can be deactivated for off-road riding, while the high specification extends to a standard coded-key immobilizer and rear rack with generous pillion grab handles. The Tiger comes standard with handguards to protect against brush and weather.
The Tiger features a skid plate and extra shielding to protect the engine and transmission.
What is an Adventure Motorcycle? Adventure Bikes are utilitarian motorcycles designed to cover great distances on less then perfect roads. Often times they are outfitted with hard petal parts and other protection (such as hand guards and light cages) to guard against rocks and other objects that could damage the bike (or rider). Most have longer suspensions allowing travel of six of more inches to absorb the imperfections of dirt roads and trails. They are also generally lighter weight, despite their rugged appearance. Generally Adventure Bikes are distinguished from “Dual Sport” bikes by the engine displacement. Adventure Bikes are usually larger then 650cc, while Dual Sport or “Enduros” are generally smaller. Adventure Bikes are designed for carry one or two passengers (and their gear) on overnight or multiple day trips miles from civilization. Most have increased fuel capacity and many feature electrical systems with generators intended to power devices beyond an iPod. Adventure Motorcycles offer riders the opportunity to explore their world beyond the limitations of smooth pavement. They are long-distance touring machines capable of burning pavement or high tailing it up a trail. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

A ROLLING TRIBUTE
J
ay Allen, industry icon, creator of the world renown Broken Spoke Saloon and founder of Jay Allen’s Road Show, had an idea; He wanted to build a bike for each branch of the service. The inspiration was Jay’s well known U.S. Army themed custom motorcycle. Through a collaborative effort with Rolling Thunder, Jay selected four of the most talented builders to complete the tribute to each military branch.
Brigitte Bourget, Billy Lane, Mike Tomas, Dar Holdsworth. “We selected these fine builders and luckily they snapped up the opportunity to build the 4 bikes that will represent each specific branch of the military,” said Jay. Brigitte Bourget was the very first person to accept this project. She and the gang at Bourgets are very excited about the tribute build and anxious to get started on the Marine bike. Billy Lane has already fabricated a jig out of scrap aluminum and awaiting delivery of the tubing and sheet metal to begin building the Air Force bike from scratch. Kiwi Mike is so excited that Indian will be represented alongside S&S Cycle and Baker Drivetrain American V-Twin Bikes. He’s building his Coast Guard tribute bike based upon a 1945 Indian Chief and he’s hoping to ride the bike to the Rolling Thunder Anniversary event for the unveiling. And word is that Kiwi Mike is collaborating with Ron Finch on the build. Dar Hodsworth is a military veteran of Desert Storm, is especially dedicated to the build. There is one custom part going onto the Navy bike that requires such intense fabrication that it’s valued at over $8,000.. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
JANUARY 2013
I hope everyone had safe and happy holidays. The New Year is here and with it the new legislative session. We will be starting from scratch on our ROW bill. After the legislative committees are formed we will have to find a new sponsor for the bill. The former sponsor (Sen. Tim Schaffer) termed out and is no longer a Senator. As of the writing of this article on December 5, 2012, I was informed yesterday that the handlebar bill will be attached to another bill. The other bill that it is being attached to originated in the senate and has already been passed through the senate. This bill will be amended with the handlebar bill as part of the bill. Rep. Rosenberger is expecting no opposition to the “combined” bill in the house. If it passes the house it would go back to the senate for their approval to the amendment. If it passes the senate as well, next step is to the governor’s office. It may sound like a long process still, but it really isn’t during a lame duck session. The fact that it would skip the committee process in the senate saves us much time. I am more than a little hopeful; I have much faith, that by the time this article is published our handlebar bill will be law.

What’s next? What other types of legislation can ABATE of Ohio, Inc. work on to preserve the freedom of motorcycling in Ohio? Who decides what legislation we work on? You can help if you would like. Come to the State Seminar Information Workshop on Feb. 2, 2013 at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North at 6500 Doubletree Ave., Columbus, OH 43229-1145. Call for your reservations at 614-885-1885. The Seminar this year will be largely geared toward “looking under the hood of the ABATE engine”. All state officers have been invited to give a report on their position. Mr. Stock has some great safety stuff lined up for us. We will be getting the ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) that was given at the MOTM in Durham this year. If you have heard a session on this, but it’s been a couple of years, guess what, it’s even gotten scarier. We have some great info on Insurance coming from one of our own that works in the field (Thanks again Robin!). Lunch and dinner will be included in your registration fee. Rod Taylor is sponsoring dinner and the ABATE Foundation will be sponsoring lunch. We will have some fun and games on Friday night, proceeds going to MOTM 2013. We will also be having a silent and live auction on Saturday night proceeds going to MOTM 2013. WE DO NEED AUCTION ITEMS. Gather up anything you can find that you think someone else might spend some money on and bring it to the auction. It doesn’t have to be motorcycle related. Homemade items sometimes go the best. Got a little extra salsa that you made from your garden, bring it on up. Someone will buy it. It is going to be informative, entertaining, and a good ole good time. I look forward to seeing you there. See you then. Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc.

TRUE COLORS
As motorcycling is gaining in popularity, I’ve seen clubs popping up all over the place. I’ve even seen ads on popular websites inviting people to join one club organization or another. Obviously if you’re reading this article in this magazine, you are involved in the motorcycle community and at one time or another you’ve been in the presence of motorcycle clubs. Maybe you’ve thought of joining a club or starting your own. I’m surprised at the number of people that don’t understand the politics involved in the MC community.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t start a club and celebrate the freedom of riding with your brothers or sisters. I have friends in many different clubs with many different agendas. But you should know the MC World in general is run by the dominant clubs that have been together for decades. Not all of them fly the 1%er patch, but many do. As most of you probably already know that the 1%er moniker is claimed and worn by those that those that have chosen to make the MC life their whole life. They are not weekend warriors, and most don’t support any charity as a club function. That’s not to say they donate to charity, because I’ve seen many that participate in charity rides for fallen bikers, and toy runs. I know that there is well deserved intimidation at hanging out with the big 1%er clubs, but I can tell you by experience that they know how to have a great time, with great food, music and brotherhood. Some people don’t understand the patch. In most cases a one piece patch is used by charity organizations or Riding Clubs (RC’s). I know many of these folks and they’re good people. They love to ride, and they love the bond that comes with being in a club. Two piece patches are usually in line with a club not specifically together as a charity or 501c club, but they don’t want to take the step to become a Three Piece MC. In fact many are American Motorcycle Association Members (AMA), and as far I as I know, the AMA won’t accept a membership anymore if a clubs logo is a Three Piece Patch. I’ve seen some Law Enforcement (LE) Clubs wearing a two piece as well. Then there is the Three Piece Patch with an “MC” patch. This represents that these clubs tend to be more serious about the lifestyle and typically live the lifestyle full time. With the Three Piece Patch comes the responsibility that goes with its use and representation. Back in the early days of clubs I
A vintage motorcycle vest and Colors, that brought big dollars at auction.
know that many just sewed their Logo’s onto denim. Many Three Piece clubs wears State Rockers to show where they represent. Some in law enforcement automatically assume that if you’re wearing a Three Piece Patch you’re a “Gang” of criminals. This is simply narrow minded behavior on their part. Obviously people make individual choices, but of course there are those in law enforcement that have been convicted of crimes as well. So does that mean all in law enforcement are criminals? Wearing a patch makes you no more a criminal than does wearing a church robe automatically makes you a pedophile. But we don’t see cops leaving churches pulling over preachers. If you want to put a club together to support your cause, just be sure take the steps to put the right kind to meet your needs. If you want to focus on your cause and not get caught up in the politics of it all. Especially with TV shows and such I see people wearing “Support Gear” or “Colors” of fictional motorcycle clubs. This really pisses off some in the MC community, and it may cause you grief. Personally, I just think they look ridiculous. If you want to save yourself the embarrassment and potential black eye, it would be advisable to reach out to any local clubs that exist before just sewing on a patch and calling yourself a motorcycle club.
Just so everyone knows – this is not a real club. So if you wear these colors, you’re pretty much announcing that you’re a phony. Is that really the message you want to send? 46

Vests like this are available at shows and ebay. If you’re really proud to NOT be a club member – why would you want to wear a “club style” vest? Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

someone who had this incredible talent but I knew that I also brought so much to the table in the means of marketing, style and technique. TRM: Gotta’ ask……Doy……really? I mean it’s so unique and cool but is it your real name? DOY: Yup, born and raised. It’s Scottish. Thank God my Mom had originality too, because I like the fact that it is so unique. TRM: So, how long has the Studio been open? DOY: We’ve been around 4 years now and the fact that we convinced them to let us open up in the old Cumberland Station, which just is saturated with all this phenomenal history…it was just absolutely meant to be. TRM: Your Studio, as far as we know, and we’ve seen almost all of them, is the best looking Studio in Nashville. DOY: Well, thank you, it took hours of choosing just the right look, feel, textures, displays, eye candy….but I’ve got to admit, that all came naturally to me and it’s exactly “the look” desired; a Studio where you enter and go “WOW!”, but that is also warm and the Staff friendly, efficient, and the Artists are very hands-on in their consultations to make sure you get exactly what you want in a tattoo…..even if you’re not sure yourself. managed it. Started a booking schedule and showed no favoritism. You called, you went on the books, same as a celebrity. We’ve got it all under control and manageable now. I either do one very large piece of two smaller pieces per day. TRM: So what’s your story before you became Tat Man super star? JOSH: (laughing) That’s funny. I was a drummer, like Doy, but I was more interested in drawing, like my mother had always done my whole life, so that was my passion. She still draws in watercolors so that is where the artistry is inherited. I used to buy Tattoo Mags as a teenager because I was so drawn to the color and all the interpretations. It fascinated me…..it still does. My personal preference is cartoons, but I have mastered any style. TRM: Out of all the tats you’ve done, which one resonates the most with you? JOSH: I did one for my Mom, a beautiful Lotus flower on her ankle. And my Mom is not the type to ever even give a tattoo a hint of a thought, so that was very cool that she trusted me and respected my work enough to wear it for life. TRM: What is the weirdest tat experience you’ve ever had? JOSH: Had a chick come in that wanted one on the “landing strip” between her vagina and her anus……ouch! There was quite a bit of discussion, but I did it for her. Turned out good too. Don’t ask me what it was as she was adamant about the fact that only the select few would get to view it. TRM: Ou’ la’ la’. What is the longest time you’ve ever spent on one tat? JOSH: 10 hours at one sitting and will never do that again. But worked on one entire back area for over a year. TRM: Alright, gotta’ wrap this up to have room for pics. What is your favorite quote or philosophy that governs your life? JOSH: I’ve got it tattooed around my neck: DIE TRYIN’. *Look for many new aspects from BLACK 13 in 2013, such as clothing lines, merchandise, and a book of Josh’s artistry. NEW YEARS’ SIRLOIN w/PEPPERCORN SAUCE (inspired by Michael Symon’s recipe on The Chew) 1-1/2 lbs. of Beef Sirloin; sliced into 1/2” thickness *If you ring the bell and ask the Butcher of any supermarket chain , they will gladly do this for you. Drizzle of High-Quality Olive Oil 3 Cloves of Garlic - leave skin on, but smash with middle of knife blade so it’s garlic bulb is flat. 1/3 Cup of Cognac 1/3 Cup of Quality Beef Stock 1/2 Cup of Drained Green Peppercorns (in spice aisle at large chain supermarket) 2 Tbls. Spicy Brown Mustard 2 Tbls. Real Butter 1/4 Cup of Fresh Parsley or dried will work, just rub it between hands to release the potency. Salt & Freshly Cracked Black Pepper *I do this recipe w/ Filet Mignon, but Sirloin is def. a much more financially feasible way to go, especially if serving more than two. “If” you have a large (10 or 12”) cast iron pan, this is the way to go, if you don’t, then just use a highquality non-stick skillet pan. Get your pan screamin’ hot over medium-high heat. Drizzle in high-quality Olive Oil to completely cover bottom of pan. Salt & fresh black pepper season both sides of your steaks generously. Place them one by one in the pan and DO NOT TOUCH them once placed. This allows for perfect carmelization. At this time, toss in your smashed garlic cloves to get that flavor into the steaks. Cook exactly 2-1/2 mins. on each side for medium rare, 3 minutes for medium. Once each side is beautifully browned, remove and let the steaks rest on a side plate. Add your Cognac to the pan; (step back so you don’t singe your eyebrows); turn down to medium heat, let the alcohol burn off, remove garlic pieces and any skins, add peppercorns and beef stock and mustard. Stir until all well incorporated together, then add butter and swirl around until totally melted. Turn off heat and add steaks back into pan and take a large spoon and repeatedly keep covering each steak with peppercorn sauce. Take your tongs and place each steak (total of 5) onto a serving platter with all steaks in a row, pour Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO
the scrumptious sauce all over the steaks generously. Top with parsley. This is so easy and tastes like a steak you’d order in a 5-star restaurant......but tastes better because it’s home.

SNOW ON THE ROOF BROWNIES
Buy your favorite brand of box Brownie mix. Make it up in the bowl, add in any of your favorites; chopped pecans, chopped macadamia nuts (my fave), raisins, cranberries, chocolate chips, whatevs....bake as directed; making sure to spray pan down well with non-stick, then flour lightly. When done, invert onto a plate, the re-invert onto another plate so you have brownies upper side up and not the bottom. Let cool totally. Then take a full jar of quality Marshmallow Creme’ and swirl it all over the top very heavy & generously.Yo-Yum

A man walks into a bar and asks the bartender, “If I show you a really good trick, will you give me a free drink?” The bartender considers it, then agrees. The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tiny rat. He reaches into his other pocket and pulls out a tiny piano. The rat stretches, cracks his knuckles, and proceeds to play the blues. After the man finished his drink, he asked the bartender, “If I show you an even better trick, will you give me free drinks for the rest of the evening?” The bartender agrees, thinking that no trick could possibly be better than the first. The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tiny rat. He reaches into his other pocket and pulls out a tiny piano. The rat stretches, cracks his knuckles, and proceeds to play the blues. The man reaches into another pocket and pulls out a small bullfrog, who begins to sing along with the rat’s music. While the man is enjoying his beverages, a stranger confronts him and offers him $100,000.00 for the bullfrog. “Sorry,” the man replies, “he’s not for sale.” The stranger increases the offer to $250,000.00 cash up front. “No,” he insists, “he’s not for sale.” The stranger again increases the offer, this time to $500,000.00 cash. The man finally agrees, and turns the frog over to the stranger in exchange for the money. “Are you insane?” the bartender demanded. “That frog could have been worth millions to you, and you let him go for a mere

$500,000!” “Don’t worry about it.” the man answered. “The frog was really nothing special. You see, the rat’s a ventriloquist.” ___________________________________________________ A dumb blonde went to a soda machine. She inserted two quarters and pushed the RED button. She heard some noise, and saw a can of Coke emerge. She then started searching her large purse for some more money. About this time, a biker came up behind her, and waited patiently for her to finish. She located a dollar bill and inserted it into the machine. More noises. She then pressed the Green button, and was rewarded with a can of Sprite. She fumbled with the change in the Return slot, and put it back into the Deposit slot. She then pushed the Orange button, and received a can of Crush. The biker then asked her, “Are you finished YET?” She then replied, “Finished, Nothin’! I’m still winning!”
