It’s with a sigh of relief that I write these words as my final contribution to this issue of Thunder Roads Ohio – it’s our largest and most comprehensive edition to date and represents a lot of long hours by our crew. I look forward to sharing it with our readers and hearing what everyone thinks. One thing that will immediately stand out is the number of sponsors we are carrying. In most cases, this directly relates to advertising – or notices – in the magazine. In many cases “advertising” may have a bad connotation, but in our case I strongly believe that the notices we share are a large part of our appeal. For all intents and purposes, motorcycles are modes of transportation; and a large percentage of our readers pick up their Thunder Roads Ohio in order to find new destinations or see what’s happening at some of their favorites. Along these lines, Thunder Roads Ohio delivers far more content than just about any publication or resource out there. We cover more rides, more rallies, more bike shows, and more events in every issue – and in many cases this information comes in the form of notices posted by other organizations… advertising in essence. So, yes – we have a lot of advertising within our pages. It’s this advertising and sponsorships that allow us to publish one of the largest motorcycle magazines in the nation – and distribute it FOR FREE. It allows us to carry more pure content in our magazine than most publications have pages in their entire magazine. And it allows us to wrap it all up in a quality package that looks pretty cool – if I don’t say so myself. In fact, I would like to thank the many businessmen and women, the organizations, and the riders that place their faith in our publication. I’d like to thank all of you for reading our publication, visiting us online, and supporting our sponsors. It’s a great cycle that helps us feed and grow our local motorcycle community – a community that we are proud to be a part of. Thank you,

The Iron Cowboy In Honor of Those Having Served in Korea On May 10, 2014; Harley-Davidson of Chillicothe will host the 1st Capital Rotary of Chillicothe and their BIKER RODEO & SCAVENGER HUNT to benefit a Korean War Monument being erected in Chillicothe Veteran’s Memorial Park. The effort to create a tribute to all who served and sacrificed during the Korean War is spearheaded by Herman “Jr.” Strausbaugh, a Korean War veteran and 20 year volunteer at the VA Medical Center in Chillicothe. During a visit to the Veteran’s Memorial Park in August, he noticed what he felt was a glaring absence amongst the monuments. The park contains monuments to people who served in World War II, Ross County’s Medal of Honor Recipients, and those who have been killed or gone missing while serving the country. Then this past spring, a monument to those serving in Vietnam was erected. “I went up there and I couldn’t find anything for Korean Veterans,” lamented Strausbaugh. “So, here I am, and I’ve been on this since last August.” The monument as designed will be 8 feet wide by 6 feet tall and made of black marble. It will contain the crest of each branch of the service that fought in Korea, as well as images of serviceman in the course of their duty representing each branch. The only writing on the monument will be “In Honor of Those Who Answered The Call: Korean War 1950-1953” centered near the top and the names of the 19 local servicemen killed in Korea etched into the bottom right corner. While the design and work on the monument is underway, help is still needed to completely fund the project – and of course, what better way to raise funds and create awareness than to host a ride and motorcycle event? To this end the 1st Capital Rotary of Chillicothe will host a fun Rodeo and Scavenger Hunt on May 10th and we encourage everyone to attend. It will be held at Harley-Davidson of Chillicothe and riders of all makes and models are invited. Registration starts at 9am, with a Color Guard Service executed by the American Legion Post #62 at 9:45am. The Scavenger Hunt will run from 10 til Noon, followed by the Rodeo and Skill Contests at 1pm. Prizes will be offered or all events, as well as door prizes and raffles. A beer garden, live music, and even a photo booth featuring the future monument will be on site! Sounds like a great time – hope to see you there!

The Federal Trade Commission issued a rule proposal to provide requirements for rating and certifying ethanol blends and requirements for labeling blends of more than 10 percent ethanol. But this rule exempts the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s E15-approved label. This rule is for an additional label to be placed on the fuel pump “in response to the emergence of ethanol blends as a retail fuel and the likely increased availability of such blends.” With this rule, it only means gasoline with higher blends of ethanol will emerge into the marketplace. The AMA believes this proposal will cause even more confusion given the events surrounding the rollout of E15 into the marketplace. The AMA opposes E15 and any fuel containing more than ten percent ethanol because it can cause engine and fuel system failure to your motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle, and can void manufacturers’ warranties. According to the EPA, “[e]thanol impacts motor vehicles in two primary ways. First ... ethanol enleans the [air/fuel] ratio (increases the proportion of oxygen relative to hydrocarbons) which can lead to increased exhaust gas temperatures and potentially increase incremental deterioration of emission control hardware and performance over time, possibly causing catalyst failure. Second, ethanol can cause materials compatibility issues, which may lead to other component failures.” “In motorcycles and nonroad products [using E15 and higher ethanol blends], EPA raised engine-failure concerns from overheating.” The FTC is seeking public comments now on the rule proposal that calls for the additional label to identify higher ethanol blended fuels. You can tell the agency how this proposal will cause even more confusion, given the events surrounding the rollout of E15 into the marketplace. The AMA does not believe this new label will do what it is intended to do – keep users from misfueling with higher ethanol blended fuels. It simply does not provide clear direction. Another label on a blender pump that already has many labels will not be sufficient to avoid misfueling and could be easily overlooked.

EPA acknowledges ethanol damages engines Proposed new labeling rule would prove ineffective An American Motorcyclist Association Action Alert

The proposed rule provides no direction on where on the pump the label should be located. Moreover, the FTC is proposing that the label be rounded to the nearest factor of 10. How will this accurately inform the consumer of the type of fuel called for by the vehicle owner’s manual? Will a fuel containing 11 percent to 14 percent ethanol be labeled as 10 percent ethanol? Is the FTC aware that manufacturers’ warranties are valid only for the use of fuel containing 10 percent ethanol by volume or less?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has publicly acknowledged that ethanol in gasoline can damage internal combustion engines by increasing exhaust temperatures and indirectly causing component failures.

Help protect 22 million motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in America -- and the riders who depend on their safe operation -- from inadvertent misfueling. Tell the FTC you want safe access to fuel for motorcycles and ATVs!

Yet, even with this knowledge, the Federal Trade Commission is recommending more labeling at the gas pump as its solution to the problem. The American Motorcyclist Association believes that is not enough.

The loser in any inadvertent misfueling event is the motorcyclist and ATV rider. The AMA stands behind its members, and all riders, in calling for more thorough safeguards against misfueling.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE MARCH 2014 I would like to thank everyone that participated and attended the May Awareness Rally. I would also like to thank everyone that assisted in getting the proclamations. As of the writing of this article on April 14, the Road Guarding Bill, HB 406 has been introduced, has had sponsor testimony and proponent testimony. Opponent testimony was scheduled, but was postponed. Law enforcement is opposing the bill. They submitted a letter of opposition, which I have read. The majority of their opposition are things we were prepared to be part of the rules to be decided by Ohio Department of Public Safety. This included road guards need to carry something identifying them as certified while performing the tasks of road guarding. Law enforcement would also like to have freeways off limits to civilian road guarding. We were expecting this to be in the rules. We agree with the reasons behind these points and are negotiating with law enforcement on including the verbiage into the bill. There is a question about a section of the bill that gives immunity in civil cases to certified road guards. This issue may take some negotiating and compromises.

On the federal level the United Nations has issued a Global Harmonization Resolution. This resolution requests all UN nations to increase penalties on certain traffic violations such as disregard for traffic signals and signs and an increase in penalties for nonhelmet use for motorcyclists. Consider this and the Center for Disease Control’s Task Force report recommending mandatory helmet laws. At this point there is no legislation at the federal level requiring mandatory helmet laws. Just be alert to the fact that this type of pressure exists. Hopefully this will remain a transportation/highway issue and control will stay where it should be, at the state level. Hope to see a big crowd at the June Jam. Camp fires at the June Jam are great places to discuss our legislative issues. Right Terry Billy? If you see me there and have questions or comments about our legislative issues, feel free to track me down. That’s what I’m here for. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc. woody702001@yahoo.com

Here we are the first of May, and as we are getting our magazine, it is time to kick off May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. Some of us will be in Columbus going to the State House to listen to talks from legislators and ABATE officers and then attending the After Rally Party. I’m sure that if the weather man is good to us we will have a great turn out and take in this great event. Take the time to promote Motorcycle awareness, it is the best way we can make our presence known because motorists need reminded on a regular basis.

Every time we get on our bike we are under review. Someone is looking at us or listening to us. Let’s remember that our next bike regulation could be SOUND. You can help by thinking: Maybe I should be good now I’m in a residential area or quiet zone. Ok, that’s it. Ride safe and if you need me give me a call. I will come and talk to your group, giving a power point on being Responsible called the 3R’s. Ride Within Your Limits Mike Stock ABATE Safety & Education Director 419-654-5446

The next big state fun event is June Jam and we need everyone to come out and support this event. This event should support the state through most of the year. It’s not just a party, it is ABATE’s main fundraiser. Carla and the team have put a great agenda together: new bands, more games and more entertainment from the crowd. Don’t forget that Kaeppner’s Woods in the Hocking Hills area is set in some of the best riding roads in Ohio. From now on carry a hand full of fliers with you and hang them up in places you go. Talk the event up - it is fun. Now for a little . The Motorcycle Ohio riding program is in full swing. All you need is to get out and sign up for a class. Start with the basic course then move up to the experienced class. Even if your wife or girlfriend does not want to ride on the road as a driver, get her to take the course with you. She will be a much better passenger. Now for a little . The TV stations have been treating us very good in northwest Ohio this spring season. We have had several awareness type stories that have been very good. If they just keep helping us get the word out to “Look Twice and Save a Life” or “Watch for Motorcycles”, it will make a difference. Anytime you can sell a sign or give out a magnet you are making a difference. The last couple times I was in Columbus, the overhead signs have had on them “Look Out For Motorcycles”. I’m so happy that April brought us some nicer weather and I’m sure that we have all been out getting that saddle time in. Don’t forget when walking up to your bike to check out tires, any oil under bike, hanging or lost straps and parts not looking like they should. If you see something that doesn’t look quite right, get it checked out. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Geauga County

Spring Drive (or RIDE)-it-Yourself Tour Saturday, May 3rd 10am-4pm. By Baby Bear, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

for FREE Buckeye Thunder Run Cards as well. We will also have special sale prices on TRO Gear and OLD SCHOOL BIKER BREWS! Throughout the day we will have ice-cold bottles of these Old Fashioned Sodas on sale for only $1! Everyone will also be entered into drawings for great prizes – including Ohio Bike Week AllAccess Passes and Concert Tickets!

T

his month we would like to invite riders to explore a portion of the state that we believe offers some of the best roads anywhere for riding – the rolling hills and historic towns of Geauga County. Admittedly, we may be showing a little favoritism with this declaration as the new TRO home home office is actually located right in the midst of Geauga County’s first settlement – Burton, founded in 1798. Even with the traditional and rural feel of Geauga County – you might still be surprised to see horse drawn buggies sharing the streets and fields being plowed by monstrous work horses. The black buggies and hard working plow horses are being driven by Amish, which make up a significant portion of the community. In fact, Geauga County is home to the 4th Largest Amish settlement in the world with over 14,000 living within the county. As a relatively new Geauga County business, we’ve jumped right in and partnered with Geauga County Tourism in an effort to invite riders to come out and explore our beautiful county as part of their Annual Spring Drive (OR RIDE) It Yourself Tour on Saturday, May 3rd. This is a FREE, Family Friendly event that takes you on a trek across the county visiting local businesses. You can download a map and more information through the Geauga County Tourism website – www.tourgeauga.com For riders coming out on the 3rd, we would like to suggest a special TWO WHEEL ONLY STOP at the Home Office of Thunder Roads Ohio. We’ve nicknamed it “The Lodge” as it’s quite the change from the more traditional offices we moved from. Located at 12467 Kinsman Road (Burton, Ohio), we are at the corner of Route 44 and 87 – just East of the intersection on 87. We invite riders to stop by and begin the Geauga tour anytime between 10am and 4pm. In addition the Ride Maps, we will also be registering riders 14

We’ve also invited some local friends out to join in the fun, including Walt and the guys from Renegade Gentlemen Customs and “Double D” herself from Double D’s Butter’s and Jams. While some of the guys may scoff at why we would invite “Butters and Jams” out to one of our first Open Houses - to them I simply have to say two words….BACON JAM. Yes, “Double D” is the mastermind behind the World Famous Bacon Jam – which we will have available to riders. The tour includes over 20 great attractions throughout the county for you to visit while on the tour. I’ve just picked a few at random that I thought were interesting to go into detail on. Food is always a draw of bikers and non-bikers alike so the first place we’ll talk about is Blazin Bill’s right there in Burton, Ohio. Biker and barbeque friendly, just thinking about it makes me want to go out and grab a bite! Great ribs are hard to come by but Blazin Bill’s does them right and pairs them with their home made coleslaw. As much as a draw as the food is, the real thing I love about the place is their AWESOME open patio. Nice way to quickly run check on your bike while you’re eating. I learned recently that when Blazin Bill’s opened originally (back in 1985) they were all outdoor seating so I guess that explains why they have such a great patio! Now if you’re not a rib guy (shame on you!) know that there are other options including some for the kids and those that are afraid to get sauce on their fingers…we’re sure that’s not you. Whatever your taste, it’s a great ride and a great time.

After you’ve developed a nice food coma from the aforementioned biker stop and have decided to continue your route through Geauga County, you might do yourself some good to stop into the Healthy Pursuit Wellness Center over in Middlefield, OH. Welcoming to all ages, this center helps you be your best, healthiest self. They provide different supplements, herbs and learning resources to do so. It’s never a bad time to start being healthy and this might just be the place to! You can visit them at 14895 N. State Ave (608) in Middlefield, OH.

Now that you are feeling healthier the next logical ride stop would be to make yourself feel better in a more philanthropic way by stopping by the Geauga County Habitat for Humanity ReStore. This gold mine was recently discovered by TRO and features a great concept. The ReStore accepts donations of new and used building materials, furniture, appliances, and household goods. In turn, they resell them to the public (at a GREAT price) to create money to continue to build homes for Geauga County residents in need. So really it’s Geauga County residents helping Geauga County residents. It’s a beautiful thing. Although anyone can help really! The store is only open on Fridays and Saturdays but hours for drop offs are throughout the week. To find out what items they accept and store hours visit their website at: habitatgeauga.org/ restore. Now that you’ve relaxed and lifted all that heavy furniture I’m feeling like we may need a little snack and what better place than one of my favorite local places, Middlefield Original Cheese Co-op. Located right on Kinsman, Middlefield Cheese has been around since 1956. 50 million pounds of Swiss cheese is produced here each year! The real great thing about Middlefield Cheese though besides the obvious is how continued... Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO ®

You’ll love the scenery on the way to each and every one and the people you’ll meet along the way. Explore the county and find all it has to offer. Plenty of festivals, apple picking, and farms to stop by this summer and we will be there. Don’t forget if you need a day in the wind, Discover Ohio, Geauga County! active they are with other local businesses and the community. In addition, their cheese is naturally made with no trans fats, lactose free, and is low in sodium. For that reason amongst others, Middlefield Cheese is sold across the U.S from Maine to California. Not only do they sell cheese, but you will also find meats, maple syrup, pancake mixes, apple butters, jams, and imported items. Stop by and try a few samples! For those of you that need to get your shopping fix in such a place as this before you leave, a best kept secret may be The Barn Treasures in Middlefield. WEDNESDAY BIKE NIGHTS In 1974, George “Jig” Warren III and Gary “Moe” Meszaros opened Quaker Steak & Lube – a “Cook Your Own Steak” restaurant that was built around a motorsports concepts. Forty years later, muscle cars and vintage hot rods certainly have their place at QS&L – but The Lube is known coast to coast for the largest bike nights on the planet, and it all started in Sharon, PA. With Sharon right across the border in neighboring PA, it seems only right for riders to make a pilgrimage over the BIKE NIGHT HQ and see where it all started. The folks at the original Quaker Steak also have all sorts of things in the works as well to celebrate their 40th Anniversary – but more on that to come….

Today my wife and I had the awesome opportunity to meet Ponch from the TV series “CHIPS”. Are you old enough to remember that show? Ponch, Eric Estrada, is shorter than what I had ever envisioned him to be. I remember him so effortlessly straddling that police bike and zooming down the highway to capture the bad guys or to help out the good guys.

My wife was so excited to get our picture taken with Eric that she forgot to get one by herself with him, which I think she really wanted to do. I feel bad for her because we didn’t make sure she got her picture with him. We met Eric at a premier showing of his latest movie, “Uncommon” in Circleville, OH. The excitement we felt in meeting Eric because he was an actor in one of our more favorite TV shows is a “Temporal Thing” which means, it will not last. Oh, yes, for the moment it was exciting and we were elated to get to meet and speak with Eric. But in the end, that excitement will fade. It’s much the same way when our favorite team wins the championship game in whatever sport we fancy; or when our favorite driver or rider competes and wins the championship in their motor sport whether NASCAR, NHRA, Super Bike, Super Moto X, Hare Scramble, Trials, or what have you. And, it doesn’t even matter what age group we’re watching either. I think the old saying goes something like this, “There’s always next year.” Even if there is next year in any of these events, it’s all “Temporal”. Psalms 39:5B & 6 (RSV) says, “and my lifetime is as nothing in thy sight. Surely every man stands as a mere breath! Selah. Surely man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nought are they in turmoil; man heaps up, and knows not who will gather!” This is part of a prayer for forgiveness and wisdom. See the Psalmist is acknowledging his life span is nothing more than a short span of time by comparison to eternity. He also acknowledges it makes no sense to be focused only on building up riches for ourselves because we do not know who is going to collect the benefits of our labors. Don’t get me wrong, it is not saying you should not plan and be wise with your finances, but it is warning us not to be so focused on it that we lose sight of eternity; the thing that really matters. See, the joy Becky and I had in meeting Eric was good, but short lived. We both have a lasting joy in knowing Jesus Christ as our savior. That joy is not “Temporal” but it is “Eternal” which means, it will last through eternity. Do you know Jesus? GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator 26

Tech Tips tire basics How to Choose the Best Tires for Your Motorcycle Whether replacing a set of worn motorcycle tires or upgrading to better tires, motorcycle owners must realize the importance of buying the best tires for the type of vehicle and riding experience desired. Whether driving off-road or on the street, buying the right tire improves the ride quality for riders and their passengers. When shopping for the right tires, learn about the types of motorcycle tires available, including track, sport, off-road, cruising, and touring tires from leading brands such as Bridgestone, Dunlop, Michelin, and Pirelli. Also find out which size tire your motorcycle needs and become familiar with the different motorcycle tire size numbering systems. Knowing what to look for when shopping for motorcycle tires can lead to both financial and time savings, not to mention protection for you and your passengers. Types of Motorcycle Tires When choosing the best tires for a motorcycle, owners must first determine the type of tire that fits the driving situation. The table below details the different types of motorcycle tires available. Tire Type Race Tires

Sport Tires

Off-Road Tires

Cruising Tires

Touring Tires

Description Allow for cornering at tight angles; extreme acceleration from a standing position; speed when coming out of turns; durable on the track use Made for fast action on the road; radial pattern gives better road grip; offer better handling in dry and wet conditions; more durable than race tires Best for off-road use; tires typically sport a knobby design; these tire types are secured with rim locks to prevent the tire from spinning on the rim in rough terrain Offer superior grip on a variety of different road surfaces; improved grip for wet weather use; improved stability control These type of tires offer long distance use in all weather conditions; stable tire offering excellent driver control

Make sure they are the correct type of tires for the motorcycle model before making a purchase. Also inspect them thoroughly to make sure they meet proper tire standards. Finally, make sure that any tires purchased match up. For instance, do not mix and match a belted tire with a radial tire.

Motorcycle Tire Sizes When determining motorcycle tire size, owners should pay attention to the five-part size number. This number is comprised of the width, aspect ratio, speed rating, tire construction, and the rim diameter, in that order. The sections below give more information on each of these areas. Motorcycle Tire Width The first number in a motorcycle tire size represents the width of the tire. The width of a motorcycle tire is the measurement, in a straight line, from the outside of one sidewall to the outside of the other sidewall. Motorcycle Tire Aspect Ratio The tire aspect ratio represents the motorcycle tire’s cross section profile in relation to its height. The number on the tire represents the percentage of the height to the tire’s width. This ratio is represented as the second number, after the tire width, on the tire size number. Motorcycle Tire Speed Rating The motorcycle speed rating represents the maximum speed at which riders can drive the motorcycle with a maximum load and the tires at the maximum listed inflation pressure. The maximum load and inflation pressures are also found on the sidewalls listed separately. The third entry on the tire size number is a letter that represents the speed rating. The following table contains the various speed ratings and their corresponding speeds in miles per hour, or MPH. Code Letter

Z-rated tires have no recognized upper speed. They are listed as 149+ MPH to represent this lack of a threshold.

hand, usually require garage equipment to repair. This is why so many off road tires use tubes.

Motorcycle Tire Construction The fourth number/letter in the tire size represents the tire construction. The letter B stands for belted tires,, and the letter R stands for radial tires.. Belted tires contain a fiberglass, Kevlar, or aramid fiber belt that gives the tire added strength and increased load capacity. Shoppers should pay attention though since not all belted tires have the B designation. If unsure about what type of tire is being bought, ask the seller for more information. Radial tires have a longer life than belted tires, as well as better steering control, but they make for poor off-road tires and have reduced grip at slow speeds. Radial tires do have belts, but only to add stiffness to the tire. Commonly constructed of steel, polyester, or aramid fibers, the belts in a radial tire reinforce the tread region. Motorcycle Tire Rim Diameter The tire rim diameter is the measurement of the rim or wheel upon which the tire sits. Measured in inches, the tire diameter can be found by measuring from the inside of the rim lip on one side of the rim to the inside of the rim lip on the other side of the rim. The Different Motorcycle Tire Size Numbering Systems Four systems comprise the available motorcycle tire size measuring systems which are largely dependent on bike type and manufacturer. The table below lists the four different tire size numbering systems. Tire Size Numbering System Metric

Description The most common tire measuring system; considered the most descriptive; found on almost every motorcycle type

Alpha

Most often used for touring motorcycle tires; the B designation, which indicates a belted tire, can appear after the speed rating

Standard Inch

Found in older motorcycles; these types of tires do not include an aspect ratio; these are bias-ply and not belted

Low Profile Inch

Also referred to as the 82 Percent Series Size System, due to the aspect ratio being 82 percent when not specified; manufacturers no longer using this tire size system

Tubed vs.Tubeless Motorcycle Tires Tubeless tires have become a safety feature on motorcycles. They retain less heat, there is no chance that they will pop when punctured, possibly causing a wreck, and tubeless tires tend to stay connected to the rim. Tires with tubes have one main advantage: they are easier to repair on the fly. If a tire with a tube is punctured during a trail ride, it is relatively easy to pull off the tire and patch the tube, then put the tire back on the rim. Tubeless tires, on the other Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Riders who use tires with tubes need to be sure that the tire pressure is correct. This is one of the most important safety measures to take with this kind of tire. When Do Motorcycle Tires Need Replacement? Motorcycle tires show some of the same signs of wear as automobile tires, particularly when the tread is becoming sufficiently worn to merit replacement. Signs to watch for include: • Exposed steel belts, cords, or fabric layers • Wear bars even with tread height • Tread worn enough that Lincoln’s head isn’t concealed at all when a penny is stood in a tread groove • Cut or punctured sidewall • Sidewall severely cracked from age or dry rot Uneven tire wear may indicate that a tire is defective, the rim is bent, the bike’s frame is damaged, or the wheel is out of alignment or out of balance. Any of these require a trip to the mechanic. They will not only interfere with steering today; they will accelerate wear and tear on the bike over the coming months. Are the Current Tires Doing What Is Desired? If the current tires have performed well in terms of tread life, road grip, and weather, a rider might choose to replace them with exactly the same make and model. At the same time, given the constant innovation in motorcycle tires, there may be upgrades that would improve performance in some way important to a specific rider at the time tires are due to be replaced. One or another manufacturer is likely to have come up with tires that are just a bit better for high mileage touring, multi-season driving, high-speed racing, sharp cornering, driving in all weather conditions, or driving off road. So it may be worth checking out the newest tires to see if any of the improvement will benefit the way a particular bike will be used. Front and Rear Tires Are Not Interchangeable The rear tire is designed for acceleration and carries most of the weight of the bike, rider, and any saddlebags on a touring bike. The front tire is designed to handle up to 80 percent of the braking and the actual turning motion during turns. The rear tire only takes a leaning motion in turns. Because of their different tasks, the two tires are engineered differently. Motorcycle tires should not be rotated as one would automobile tires.

From the Back of the Bike

I

BY NANCY BEACH

t’s here! It is finally here! Ohio Bike Week! We have been waiting with such anticipation. After a very long winter and just a few days of riding this spring, this is the official kick-off to summer, to riding and to having some serious fun! OK. Let’s talk about what you should be doing during OBW. There are lots and lots of things to do. There are places to ride to and see, food from vendors or from great local restaurants, poker runs, hanging out with your friends downtown or at the block party. You will not be bored or out of options. But…you will find some new additions to this year’s festivities and that’s always a plus for any type of event. New this year is the Thunder Zone located in the heart of downtown Sandusky at the Sandusky State Theatre. The theatre’s state room is being transformed into Tattoo Alley with a variety of tattoo artists. The set-up is pretty cool with places to sit and watch or have a consult about a potential new tat. And, of course, there will be a place within site to have a cold one while you are checking out all the latest ink. Behind the theatre will be a large outdoor patio with a bar. This is just a nice place to chill out in some comfy chairs or hang out at the picnic tables. Access to this lounge-bar will be behind the theatre or through Tattoo Alley. For a chance to escape from the heat (or the coldhopefully not) you may want to take in the movie, “Why We Ride” airing multiple times at the theatre during Ohio Bike Week. If you haven’t heard of it yet, this is a documentary that was lovingly put together about motorcycle riding as a pastime and a sport with some famous and not so famous appearances. It’s great for some history and all riders will be able to relate to the people on the big screen. It is worth grabbing a beer and taking 89 minutes of your time to see. The photography is fantastic! Check at the theatre for airing times throughout the week. Another portion of the Thunder Zone is the theatre’s former gift shop that has been transformed into an art 32

gallery. During Bike Week, we will be featuring David Uhl, the resident artist for Harley Davidson. Remember the cool painting he did featuring Steven Tyler of Aerosmith on a bike? He will not only have his work displayed but he will also be painting on site where you can see him through the windows as you pass by. Or stop in and see his work! So putting everything into perspective…the Thunder Zone offers you a chance to see ink, see biker art, see a biker movie and see some cool bikes! And you won’t go thirsty with the indoor and outdoor bars. And the staff at the Thunder Zone can give you directions to just about any type of store you may want to find…grocery, drug store or parts…yes, parts! You have to be prepared. Remember...I am the one used to being out of town when we may lose something off of that shovel! I hope we see all of you at OBW this year and at the Thunder Zone! I will be there! Not on the Back of the Bike as much as mingling around to meet everyone. Stop in and say Hi! I would love to hear your stories for future articles. And, I am always taking pictures during OBW so you may find yourself as part of my summer gallery. I may just end up with pictures of YOU on the back of the bike!

Thunder Roads速 Magazine OHIO

PRESENTED BY RIDER INSURANCE & THUNDER ROADS OHIO MAGAZINE Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that this summer; we will once again be hosting the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Rider Insurance! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride!

The Way it Works

State and Stop Prizes

Each month Thunder Roads Ohio will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops each month. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register at each stop.

Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Extra “check-in’s” are awarded for ride stops more then 100 miles from home. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting locations, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, rally passes, concert tickets, and even the opportunity to win factory and custom motorcycles! The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider treking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

The Winners If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a BiketoberfestÒ Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only check-in’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (MondaySunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

75

Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

BONUS Check-in’s! The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accomodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook.

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards.

NEW FOR 2014 – You can request a Ride Card through our website! You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio. PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your 2012 Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over. Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. 76

Just Get Out and RIDE! One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working.

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously this will be a heavy focus within the magazine but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding - including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and statewide sponsors – Thunder Roads can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads is involved in countless

charitable events all across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Of course one of the key components in this whole program, second only to the riders themselves, is the stops. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty of more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

The RIDE kicks off this month!

Pick up your card and hit some stops! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

“I bought this as a repossessed bike that was basket case. I tore it down to the frame and then cut and stretched – to allow for the 30” front wheel. Converted original 98 C.I.D. motor to the 103, Stage IV. I installed the Camtech body kit with 6” stretched bags, front fairing, and the 30” wrap fender. I then sent the bike to Camtech Customs for the paint work.” - Buddy Baker, Norwalk

Lets Play Cell Phone Company -

We are going to play pretend today. Let’s pretend everyone owns a cell phone company. Let’s pretend just like major cell phone companies you make your money when people use their cell phones on your network. Lets pretend you make a lot (I mean a lot, as in obscene amounts) of money. What if all of sudden people were not allowed to use their phones all the time and your lines went dead from 7a.m. to 9a.m. (morning rush hour), from 12p.m. to 1p.m. (lunch), and from 4p.m. to 6.p.m. (evening rush hour)? What would happen is you would lose a lot of money, as in I can’t get my third jet or the really large private island that I wanted. Yeah, that is a serious pretend bummer, bad enough that is it is time to hire some big money lobbyists to schmooze the state and federal governments to be sure people can use their cell phones whenever they damn well please. Just like the founding fathers intended. (Hey, this constitutional rights argument might work, will make a note to ask the NRA on that one). Using a cell phone in a car is one of the biggest distractions possible. It covers every possible type of distraction. First, there is manual (hands on the phone), second is visual (trying to read numbers or texts at speed) and third is cognitive (your mind is focused on the phone, not the road). A drunk driver is only cognitively distracted compared to the whole enchilada that cell phones delivery. Thus it is only logical that cell phones now account for the cause of 26% of all auto crashes. This is cited in the National Safety Councils annual report which also notes that it is not texting while driving that causes the crashes; it is talking on a cell phone. The evidence also suggests that hands free talking is no better than having the phone stuck to your ear. So, as a motorcyclist, when soccer mom is too busy discussing the sales at Kenwood mall and turns into your bike, which she neglected to see, you lose. Darn, that is a pretty big threat to your pretend phone company. You need a really, really good lobbyist, like the ones who are selling the “there is no global warming and if there is we aren’t causing it” thing to the public. If they are too busy the ones trying to convince the public that the NSA is really our friend and it is ok for them to have unlimited access to our data and phone calls might be a good option. They appear to be quite creative. We need really good lobbyists, not the ones the alcohol industry hired. They got their butts kicked by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. If only they would have sprung for the top tier maybe 88

drinking and driving wouldn’t be frowned upon. If they are good enough they can sell the theory that cell phones are not that dangerous. We will complain that we are being singled out and that actually eating or putting on make up while driving is far more dangerous. Then we can convince the legislatures that we care and help them enact a statute that makes it illegal to text and drive. Yes, that would be a fine statute that along with $4 will get you a cup of coffee. As the Ohio State Highway Patrol has only issued 273 citations since the inception of this law in Ohio it is clearly impossible to enforce. It has the added benefit of not addressing the real (and profitable) underlying problem of talking on a cell phone while driving. As motorcyclists we need to care about this problem. First, as discussed in last months article studies seem to suggest that about 75% of motorcycle accidents are caused by cars turning into the path of a motorcycle. Second, motorcyclist deaths and injuries are increasing. Motorcyclist death rates increased 55% from 2001 to 2008. The number of nonfatal motorcyclist injuries that were treated in hospitals also increased, from nearly 120,000 injuries in 2001 to about 175,000 in 2008. More current data supports this trend. Third, cell phones as indicated above are now causing 26% of all crashes. It seems logical to conclude that traffic accidents are up because of cell phones. Thus, the ultimate conclusion is that fellow bikers are getting hurt and killed because of cell phones. However, as a pretend cell phone company owner I don’t care if people are getting killed because of my product. No one is blaming my cell phone company and if I have to pay a boatload of cash to lobbyists to keep it that way it is just a cost of doing business. Let’s blame the morons who are using my products. Anyway, as it stands the lobbyists’ costs are just a drop in a bucket. With the kind of money my pretend cell phone company makes a fleet of jets and a string of islands is another day at the office. STRAIGHT STRAIGHT FROM FROM THE THE SHOW SHOW TO TO THE THE SHOWROOM SHOWROOM FLOOR FLOOR

The NEW Honda NM4

H

onda held a press conference at the 30th Osaka Motorcycle Show 2014 and unveiled the world premiere of two types of its new production model “NM4” as an exhibition model (planned for production). The NM4 was developed under the keywords of “the Neo-futuristic” and “COOL,” pursuing new, unique styling. According to Honda, this NM4

90

was designed to realize two points; the design concept “the Front Massive Styling” and “the cockpit position” focusing on the sense of unity with the rider, that the rider can smoothly get into the vehicle. The low-setup cockpit position and adjustable backrest provide an enjoyable new riding feel. The instrument panel was designed to provide clear readability and a uniquely fun riding experience, as if the rider was experiencing a movie scene.

LED lamps are used on the headlight of the powerful-looking front fairing, the tail lamp and the turn signals. In addition, the utility boxes are set up on the right and left sides of the front fairing for small articles. The bikes also feature a wide 200mm rear tire and an instrument display that can be illuminated in 25 different colors. Two NM4 types were unveiled at the motorcycle show; the simply-configured “NM4-01” which emphasizes its wide, dynamic rear tire and attractive low silhouette, and the “NM4-02” which emanates a unique presence and features a prominent rear design (containing utility boxes on each side of the rear body). Since the unveiling in Osaka, Honda announced that they will begin selling a production version of the NM4 in June – priced at $10,999. What looks to be an early 2015 model release, the US NM4 is reported to be powered by the NC700X’s 670cc engine mated to an automatic dual-clutch transmission. This pairing is anticipated to be a low-revving, fuel efficient package – making this a practical means of transportation. Despite it’s unique styling, there’s an emphasis on practicality throughout the bike – with saddlebags and storage pockets in it’s front fairing. While the “exhibition models” came in black and white, it appears that the actual production models will only be available in black in the United States.

continued...

The NM4 features a backrest that folds back and then serves as a passenger seat. When it’s flipped up, the pad can be set at different angles and a variety of positions that offer different levels of support for the rider.

Daytona 2014 The Iron Cowboy, TRO hen it comes to the big national motorcycle rallies, each seems to have a distinct personality and purpose. When it comes to Daytona Bike Week the focus is on racing (its heritage), the manufacturers, and this year – more than ever – the chance to celebrate the pending arrival of spring and riding season. When I left home for the run to Daytona, I left behind snow and ten degree forecasts. Daytona was exactly what I needed to cure my cabin fever - and Bike Week didn’t disappoint!

W

Daytona Bike Week has been a tradition since 1937, when the inaugural Daytona 200 race was held. That first race was held on a 3.2 mile course that covered both beach and road. Ed Kretz won that first race on his Indian motorcycle, averaging 73 mph. These early races took advantage of the beach to develop sand banks for racers to turn on at the end of their sprint down either the hard sand beaches or the public roadway. From these early racing roots, Bike Week grew as motorcycle enthusiasts came out to witness the fastest racers from around the world come and compete on the beaches of Daytona. Even when the races were suspended for World War II, the party continued as people still showed up for the “unofficial” party that was becoming known as Bike Week. Now, over 75 years later, the party still continues as motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world come to witness what is described as “The World’s Largest Motorcycle Event”. This year I planned on “roughing” it a little and decided to camp for the Rally. The last few years I’ve had to go the hotel route, due to working on the magazine; but I worked things out this year so that I never once had to even turn on the computer while there. This was a welcome escape and I was looking forward to spending some nights out under the stars after one of the coldest winters in history. In years past I’ve camped out with our ABATE of FLORIDA friends at the Volusia County Fairgrounds. They’ve been hosting a bike week campground there for years and have it down to a science. ABATE volunteers staff the campground and are on site 24 hours a day keeping an eye on things. Hot showers and all the basics are covered and you never have to worry about your camp. If you’re looking for a basic spot at a reasonable rate, it’s hard to imagine a better deal. However, it is a few minutes outside of Daytona – being located off I-4 about 30 minutes out of Orlando. It’s a great location, but if your job or party schedule requires that you spend a lot of time running around Daytona – you may want to opt for someplace closer. This year, I decided to try out the Cacklebery Campground, located across the street from the Cabbage Patch Bar. They had become a Thunder Roads partner this past year and I’ve ridden past their giant chicken plenty of times.

I really enjoy camping at rallies because everyone seems to just come together. You get to know all the neighboring camps and everyone shares war stories each morning. If you want more privacy – you can select a site a little more on the edge of things or maybe back in the woods along the edge of the lake in the case of Cacklebery. Or, if you don’t mind the late night noise or are planning on turning off the lights as things shut down – you can camp a stones throw from the stage and bar. Cacklebery is a family owned and operated business – and it seemed as though everyone was pretty much part of the family after their first night or so. The owner and his family were there on site throughout the Rally and were easily accessible with any questions or concerns. I tend to like the quieter campgrounds for a place to unwind after a long day riding or taking part in the downtown craziness; but it’s nice to be close to the action as well. Cacklebery seemed to offer the best of both worlds. A relatively small, quiet place to stay – minutes from the

Speedway and across the street from the Cabbage Patch. It literally took me roughly ten minutes to walk from my camp amongst the trees at Cacklebery to the midst of the party at the Patch. Cacklebery does offer a fair number of RV Sites – even offering RV and Camper rentals directly through their convenient website. Rates are fairly reasonable as well, $15 a night for basic camping. For more information, visit them online at cacklebery.com. In terms of everything else – well, where should I start? Daytona is Daytona – a huge party in the midst of residential and rural areas along the coast of Florida. I awoke to the sound of cows in the field next to my camp and partied at night with bikers from Berlin and Sydney. It’s a strange mix at times. I think that if anything really separates Daytona from the other big national rallies – is that clear fact that Daytona draws folks from around the world to celebrate the motorcycle lifestyle.

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

It’s also worth noting that Daytona is far more diverse in terms of the riders than just about any other major rally. Metric, American V-Twin, European, Street Bikes, Motocross – they are all represented here. Not only in terms of the riders, but the manufacturers as well. Just about every aspect of the riding world is represented in some part at Daytona and the complete evolution of just about every make and model can be found on the streets of Daytona as well. From vintage Indian’s and Harley’s to the most cutting edge Honda street bikes – they were all represented at the Rally. It’s really just a matter of deciding what your taste is and heading in the right direction.

I spent a few days checking out the custom builds at the various builder camps situated around Daytona. I particularly enjoyed catching up with friends at the “Chop-in Block” camp at the Boot Hill Outpost. There were some incredible bikes there and it was cool kicking back with the folks that built them. In particular, I enjoyed getting a chance to talk with Wendell Turner from Turner’s Cycle Shop. He had an amazing 1957 FLH Harley-Davidson Panhead that he dubbed “Crazy Horse” there. Look for it in an upcoming issue of Thunder Roads, as I had the chance to shoot an equally spirited filly on that fire breathing pan. On the other side of the spectrum the Daytona Speedway hosted their Thunder Alley for manufacturers and vendors in the shadows of their massive grandstands. This is base camp for all the manufacturers as they present their newest models and in most cases – allow riders to take them for a spin. You could spend every day all week at the Speedway and still not ride all the various makes and models presented for your consideration. Of course there was a new player there this year, as Indian came to town with more than the engine they brought last year. (Not that it didn’t draw crowds on its own!) Indian and their sibling Victory Motorcycles drew crowds as folks ohhh’d and aaaaww’d over the new Indian models and some really impressive custom Victory’s. Indian bigwig’s also took the stage to announce the fact that they are launching a new Indian Owners Group, which seemed fairly anti-climactic because of course they should. My only question was what catchy nickname were they going to select for their riders. “IOG” doesn’t quiet roll off continued... Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO ®

the tongue like “HOG” does. Haven’t yet heard their answer, but I’m curious as to whether they might suddenly start a network of Indian “tribes” all over the country. Sounds fun. Of course, Harley-Davidson has a long standing tradition of unveiling new bikes at Daytona and they delivered two new bikes this year – although one was a re-introduction of the Dyna Low Rider which Harley originally introduced in Daytona back in 1977. On my way down to Daytona, one of our sponsors asked me to check out a new CBR that Honda was going to have on display for the first time there. It turned out that Honda had several impressive streetbikes unveiled for the first time in Daytona. These were all cutting edge bikes that looked fast just sitting there on their kickstands. Once again, I took plenty of pictures and look for more on these machines coming up in future issues.

Of course, I haven’t even really talked about Main Street and Downtown Daytona. I also haven’t told you about the Beaver Bar on 1 and the craziness that they serve up open to close there. To be honest, I’m not sure what there is to tell. It was a great party! These rallies are always a great time, because of their very nature. THOUSANDS of riders coming together to have a good time. Sure it was a diverse crowd of folks from all backgrounds, representing just about every riding interest imagined – but it truly was gathering of kindred spirits. Riders from all corners of the globe gathering for a celebration of the open road and wind in our faces. It was pretty cool – and in the truest sense of brotherhood everyone just seemed to get along and have a great time. I read reports stating that there were only a handful of arrests directly related to the Rally – and only three motorcycles stolen during the entire time. Not bad when you consider that estimates put the number of motorcycles and riders coming to town anywhere from 350,000 to 500,000 each year. Those weren’t official numbers but they are impressive if the real number is anywhere within that – or even close.

LUMPY’S GARAGE By “Snakecharmer”, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

Zander ... Is a walking canvas covered in his muses art ... but what makes him so interesting is his own niche he has carved out in just a few short years. At 52 he retired as a Machinist and Mold Maker and embarked on an untapped artistic craving lurking in his head and waking him in the middle of the night... One day I just picked up a Brush in my “ Grubby lil Paws” as he puts it and started painting anything that was not nailed down in the garage. In a vow to himself he would try to paint or draw something everyday.

The Obsession begins ...

He says when his next door neighbor ask him to letter an old handsaw for his dads garage and from there was the birth of one of his mainstay canvases to this day. He has painted hundreds of designs on all different types of Saws and when he runs out of them its on to bottles from landfills, stuff from flea markets and garage sales or anything he can recycle.. His motto is that he brings new life to many unwanted and discarded items.

Artistic rage ...

Handlettering and Pinstriping are all over everything in his Garage / Shop ... golf carts, motorcycles, cars and shop signs with cleaver sayings that line the walls to items I had to ask what they were... A pair of Dutch Shoes? ! He will customize anything! Zander has a unique mind and with his latest adventure in wall art and sketching I see no end in sight. Within in four years he now has a worldwide customer base and thriving is the custom touches that he brings to each and every piece . When I was there last he was sending a personalized order overseas and my just consumed wine bottle was on the drawing board before I even left!. I have many of his masterpieces myself and at one point my family ask me if I had any other clothing than Lumpy’s t shirts ! HOT … in Milwaukee HOG (Harley Owners Group) Officer Training

This was my first time attending Officer Training in Milwaukee (or anywhere else for that matter). It was everything I expected and so much more. As a rider I wave to every bike I pass chances are you do too. It’s the way we show respect and unity amongst riders. What is HOG??? The “Harley Owners Group” it’s about ‘Riding and having Fun’! So how do we continue to do that to the best of our ability? HOT teaches ‘Our best ideas come when we share and grow from another’s ideas’. One of the best tidbits of advice I got growing up was from my Grandfather “Learn from others mistakes … you will not live long enough to make them all yourself”. To me the flip side of that could also be “Learn from others successes”. Ideas develop and grow in a supporting environment where everyone is inspired. This is no secret it’s the commonsense approach that Harley-Davidson is known for. Harley-Davidson did not get where they are today by not offering more than just the products they sell. They are true leaders in what really counts … The love of riding. Whether seen in the foresight they had in preserving the history of their journey; or the foresight they show when it comes to enjoying the open road Harley-Davidson truly stands alone. The world famous Harley-Davidson Museum brings joy to both riders and non-riders alike. We came in a day early so we would have time to take the tour … and I was blown away. It was an awesome experience from the artistic layout of the

land, to the moment I entered the doors. The friendly welcome we all received set the tone of excitement every step of the way. Most of the photos I shot on this trip were in the museum as the next two days were filled with learning and I didn’t want to miss a thing. I only wish I could have recorded the weekend to view again and again. Like seeing a good movie I’m sure there were many things I would notice the second or third time around. How could I ever put into words everything that I took away from HOT? … I simply cannot. But I can say I came away with more knowledge from the experience. The ability to openly brainstorm with likeminded people who were unconcerned with titles was priceless. Saddle up … Let’s Ride!!! Nicole Luttrell, TRO Contributor Photos by Nicole Luttrell

Group Riding

M

Quick Tips from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation

otorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group -- whether with friends on a Sunday morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally -- is the epitome of the motorcycling experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride: Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank. Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams on next page). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the group’s riding style. Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller subgroups, each with a lead and sweep rider. Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter.

108

Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.

ThunderRoadsOhio.com

Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled. Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up. For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants.

SEVENTY-TWO KILLED RESISTING GUN CONFISCATION IN BOSTON Boston – National Guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed on April 19 by elements of a para-military extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw. Speaking after the clash, Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage declared that the extremist faction, which was made up of local citizens, has links to the radical right-wing tax protest movement. Gage blamed the extremists for recent incidents of vandalism directed against internal revenue offices. The governor, who described the group’s organizers as “criminals,” issued an executive order authorizing the summary arrest of any individual who has interfered with the government’s efforts to secure law and order. The military raid on the extremist arsenal followed widespread refusal by the local citizenry to turn over recently outlawed assault weapons. Gage issued a ban on militarystyle assault weapons and ammunition earlier in the week. This decision followed a meeting in early this month between government and military leaders at which the governor authorized the forcible confiscation of illegal arms. One government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed out that “none of these people would

116

have been killed had the extremists obeyed the law and turned over their weapons voluntarily.” Government troops initially succeeded in confiscating a large supply of outlawed weapons and ammunition. However, troops attempting to seize arms and ammunition in Lexington met with resistance from heavily-armed extremists who had been tipped off regarding the government’s plans. During a tense standoff in the Lexington town park, National Guard Colonel Francis Smith, commander of the government operation, ordered the armed group to surrender and return to their homes. The impasse was broken by a single shot, which was reportedly fired by one of the right-wing extremists. Eight civilians were killed in the ensuing exchange. Ironically, the local citizenry blamed government forces rather than the extremists for the civilian deaths. Before order could be restored, armed citizens from surrounding areas had descended upon the guard units. Colonel Smith, finding his forces over matched by the armed mob, ordered a retreat. Governor Gage has called upon citizens to support the state/national joint task force in its effort to restore law and order. The governor also demanded the surrender of those responsible for planning and leading the attack against the government troops. Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and John Hancock, who have been identified as “ringleaders” of the extremist faction, remain at large. And this, fellow Americans, is how the American Revolution began, in April, 1775. On July 4th, 1776 these same extremists signed the Declaration of Independence, pledging to each other and their countrymen their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. Many of them lost everything, including their families and their lives over the course of the next few years. Lest we forget!

etiquette

I

am often asked about “The Rules” when citizens have been invited to an MC Club Party, or perhaps an MC Club Ride. People want to know things like where to ride in the pack, or ground rules for being invited to a clubhouse, etc. I always tell them that they need to ask if they don’t know or understand something. I’d say in most cases they must have been invited by a member or a trusted associate to even be allowed to show up in the first place, so just ask them in private if you have a question. Most things they will answer, some things they won’t. Specific Clubs have specific rules, and I know many of them. It would irresponsible for me to speak directly about any specific club, but there are general guidelines that would be best if followed, regardless if you know that the club you’ve been invited to follows them or not. Many citizens are thrilled with the opportunity to attend a Clubhouse party, but with it also comes with a bit of apprehension. “What if I say the wrong thing”.. What if I piss someone off”.. etc. Well, those are valid concerns. Nobody wants to take something that they find enjoyable and ruin it for themselves or anyone else. I think that most of the general guidelines are pretty much common sense, which it shouldn’t surprise you that there seems to a large deficit of it. Don’t get drunk and act stupid is a great place to start. Hey look, we all like to party, and yes all of us from time to time have been known to partake in a little too much party cheer now and again. A Clubhouse isn’t that place. There’s a sign that you will see often hanging in Clubhouses, “This Is Not The Place to Discover That You Can’t Hold Your Liquor”. So if you know that when you drink Whiskey you have been known to take off your pants and dance around a fire (specifically Men), it would probably be a good night to maybe just have a couple of cold beers. Same goes when riding with us. I’m not having some drunken guest in my pack to wreck us all. Check your Attitude at the Door. We throw parties to have a good time, which means we don’t want to deal with your Dumb A$$ wanting to start $h!& with another invited guest, men or women. You will typically find out real quick who is in charge, and it’s not you or the other guest I promise. Another issue is BYOB and/or Food. Unless you’re going to bring enough for everyone (potluck), this isn’t a concert or a picnic, don’t bring it to a Clubhouse. Keep your opinions to yourself. There’s a saying I like to use, “If I want your opinion, I will give it 118

to you”. That goes for your Ole Lady too. I won’t come to your house and tell you how things could be better, and I expect the same in my house, as do my Brothers. If you are invited to a Club Sponsored ride I’ve discovered that it really depends on each club where you are in the pack. There’s a difference between a “Club Sponsored Ride”, and being invited to “Ride with the Club”. A Club Sponsored Ride might be a Poker Run or Fund Raiser for a fallen friend, member, or perhaps an annual Toy Run. These typically are open to a wider band of citizens or friends of the club, and it’s pretty well understood that with it comes some “Loose Riding”, whereas maybe the pack isn’t always going to be situated as it would be if you were just riding with the club only. From what I’ve seen, most of the time on these, the club members will ride up front, and everyone else will follow. Depending on how large the event, it may even be broken into a few packs. Now a “Ride with the Club” is typically where the rules can change, and are often different depending on each club. Just know even as a citizen you will be expected to be a confident, well trained rider. We lane split it pairs of two’s in most cases. If you are not confident in your ability or comfort level, then I’d suggest you not participate until you are. To be invited to ride with a Club can be and exhilarating experience for those that have not done it. I can tell you that in my experience at the front the pack it can also be a real pain in the a$$ if I have one fool screwing up my pack. You probably won’t be invited back. Some clubs incorporate their supporters or citizen riders within their pack, and some put them at the back of their pack and don’t give a damn if they keep up or not. It’s always best to ask your contact when heading out so you follow their specific protocol. Most of us don’t use turn Signals, we use hand signals. Why? Because it just takes one knucklehead riding in the pack with his damn blinker on to get the entire pack pulled over, which really pisses off the Club. Don’t be that Guy! We change lanes in a specific manner, learn it. We do it for safety and uniformity. This isn’t an all inclusive list, but some general guidelines. There are more. I could tell you, but where would be

After Care If you are getting a tattoo or thinking of getting one, chances are you want something you can either show off or would be proud of. The first and most important step in achieving that is choosing the right artist. After that, besides the obvious choice of tattoo, after care is a vital step to achieving the perfect tattoo. With riding season coming up and tax season coming to a close, many people are considering tattoos. Different people and different artists will have slight variations on what type of care is best but we’d like to give you some general guidelines in this piece to follow to help you in your expedition. First thing first: If you’ve chosen a reputable tattoo artist, chances are they will provide and give you good advice on how to care for your tattoo. Make sure you listen. They don’t want their hard work to go to waste. Artists that have years of experience will have advice that has been tested to work. As far as bandages go, make sure you leave yours on for 2-24 hours. It’s hard to fight the urge to peek and want to show it to your friends or family right away but wait. You want to give it the proper time to heal. Some tattoo artists use bandages while others use plastic wrap (which shouldn’t be left on more than 2 hours). You’ll hear varying opinions on both but regardless of the strategy, make sure you follow your artist’s instructions on how to maintain yours. When removing an actual bandage, feel free to soak it in water so it comes off more easily and doesn’t stick to your skin.

When you wash the tattoo, make sure you are using an unscented soap and not scrubbing at the tattoo. You don’t want to be too harsh. An antibacterial soap is great to help fend off any issues. After you wash it, pat it dry (don’t rub) and let it air dry for some time. This will let the tattoo breathe. While we are on the subject of water, I want to mention that it’s generally bad practice to soak your tattoo. That means not in the tub, hot tub, swimming pool, or at the beach. This is because exposing it to too much water could potentially draw out the ink. Also a lot of those places are grounds for a lot of bacteria that could negatively affect your tattoo’s healing process. Many tattoo artists suggest applying an ointment for a few days after you get your tattoo. I’m not going to breach the subject of what ointment to use. There is a lot of controversy on what works and what doesn’t. My best advice again would be to go to a reputable artist and take their advice on what you should use. Make sure you ask how often and how much to use as well. Healing time is generally 4-6 weeks. In this time, tattoos will peel and this is completely normal. Don’t attempt to pick at these scabs. Let them heal on their own. It’s best not to expose your tattoo to direct sunlight as well so that it will not fade. Keep it covered during this time and after that, apply a minimum of SPF 30 to protect it in the future. Lastly, make sure you consider the clothing you are wearing. Tight fitting clothing over your tattoo for the first few days of healing is going to be uncomfortable and prohibit oxygen from fully getting to your tattoo. It could also stick to your skin and make it painful to remove. Try to wear looser fitting clothes during the first few days. If you are ever concerned about your care or unsure at all, make sure you call your artist for clarification. Many people will get a tattoo this year and leave it at that. If you are going to spend a good amount of money on something… why not take care of it so it can be its best? More importantly, consider how long you will have the tattoo. A few weeks of inconvenience are worth it for something that will last a lifetime! If for no other reason, respect your artist’s work and properly care for your tattoo.

JOKER’S WILD Drunken Biker A drunk biker is riding through the city and his bike is weaving violently all over the road. An Irish cop pulls him over. The cop says to the biker, “Where have you been?” “I’ve been to the pub,” slurs the biker. “Well,” says the cop, “It looks like you’ve had quite a few.” “I did all right,” the biker says with a smile. “Did you know,” says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms, “that a few intersections back, your wife fell off the bike?” “Oh, thank heavens” sighs the biker. “For a minute there, I thought I’d gone deaf.” ________________________________________________ Top Ten Reasons Why Gold Wing Riders Don’t Wave Back 10. Dussault and his

STRESS RELIEF D. Smith, Thunder Roads Ohio

I recently had the opportunity to visit bluesman Colin Dussault and catch up with him in regards to his latest CD – not a compilation from his Blues Project Band or even his Acoustic Trio, but a 4 disc tribute to his good friend Mr. Stress. For anyone that knows Colin, it should come as no surprise that as he prepares to celebrate 25 years in the business – his focus should be on the music community and celebrating the life of a local blues icon.

Colin felt compelled to step in and help – taking charge of the situation and making arrangements for new accommodations. This was a complicated process because a lot of Mr. Stress’s personal effects were in disarray due to his health limitations and he was overwhelmed by the bureaucracy seemingly arrayed against him. Colin saw Bill through many of these challenges – even Bill “Mr. Stress” Miller, has been playing the harmonica since getting him a new Social Security Card and State ID. Colin and the mid 1960’s – during which time he’s shared the stage with was able to get Mr. Stress first moved into a nursing facility and such notable artists as Cream, Three Dog Night, The MC5, and then later into a new apartment at Musicians Towers in CleveGolden Earring. land Heights with the help of friends and his family’s business Dussault reminisces: – Dussault Moving and Storage. “When I was a teenager working with my dad’s moving company I would be packing up houses on the East side and it seemed as though 9 out of 10 houses would have a black Mr. Stress Live at the Euclid Tavern record. I had just started a little band in high school, it was the mid 80’s, and everywhere I turned… there was this record.” “I got a ‘harp’ and started going to jam nights – and he’d be there,” Colin explained. Over time they would become friends. “We were at a Blue Society Meeting way back when and there was a panel talking about why we were playing music and people were giving various answers… ‘for the love of music’, and so on.. And Stress will say “I knew I liked this guy because his answer was – because it beats the hell out of moving furniture!” I guess he saw me as an honest straight forward guy – and we’ve been friends ever since. We did some gigs together – jam nights. Years went by and with us both playing harp in the area, we were always aware of each other.

He was up in years, and not playing much – but I just wanted to pay respects Once Mr. Stress’s immediate living situation was stabilized, to him and give him some props. He’s on three tunes, good stuff. Colin considered how he might be able to help him out financialI also have some great outtakes from those sessions, us talking ly. “Walkin’” Cane, Armstrong Bearcat, Becky Boyd, Billy Sullivan, Rich Spina--the list goes on and on. Over 58 artists donated songs. Additionally the 4 disc compilation boasts several rare and previously unreleased classics from Bands like the Blackwelles from 1966, Richie Green and former Tiffany Shade/Mink DeVille keyboardist Robert Leonard. Several unheard Mr. Stress acetates also make their first appearance in public as well”, Dussault describes. “The 4 discs are housed in a DVD style case and is augmented by a 20-page full color booklet featuring never-before-seen photos from Mr. Stress’ personal archives dating back to the early ‘60s as well as song credits, liner notes and a brief history of the Mr. Stress Blues Band. This limited edition collection will prove to be a wonderful addition to the library of collectors and music fans alike”, Dussault says. I picked up a set of the discs, and it hasn’t left my car yet. I would encourage anyone that has a taste for the blues or appreciation of great local music to check it out. You can find out more about the STRESS RELIEF set, Mr. Stress’s situation, and the effort to help him out at www.colindussault.com and of course you can order the set there as well.
