Underground Nation is a cutting edge alternative fashion retail shop based in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic city centre in Candlemaker Row, with the historic Greyfriers cemetery located directly behind the store. It stocks cutting edge fashions with labels covering a wide spectrum of styles, such as London’s legendary Cyberdog brand, with many other labels such as Stargazer, Phaze, Darkside, Plasticwrap, and Hellbunny. Underground Nation was born from founder Julia Liles passion for creating her own designs for wearing at clubs, designs made to help her stand out from the crowd and be noticed, a passion she has brought to Underground Nation offering customers the opportunity to have their own one off design made in store by Julia. Underground Nation takes its inspiration from its customers, not from the high street as alternative fashion is constantly evolving and evolves on the street, at Underground Nation we recognize this and look to our customers for inspiration producing our own range of limited and one-off custom made designs. You’ll find that our range is very much mix-and-match, so you can express your creativity by combining basic pieces with accessories and jewellery for a style that’s unique to you.

t’s that time of year when the parents start making noises about holiday plans. If you don’t want to be trawling round old castles and ruins come summertime, why not take a few steps to make sure you get to do what you want to – at least some of the time? According to leading psychologists, communicating as a family and taking into account everyone’s needs and expectations as well as compromising, should take some of the pressure out of a family holiday. The following article can also help to stop the sulks - both yours and theirs.
Take the initiative Let’s face it, your parents are the ones paying for the holiday and while you’d love to do exactly what you want when you go away, it ain’t going to happen. But that’s not to say you shouldn’t be listened to. Why not take the initiative and impress them with how mature you are by calling a family meeting? It doesn’t have to take too long :but make sure you choose a neutral room such as the living
room or kitchen and there’s no background noise. Also, pick a good time, preferably when they’re relaxed – not as soon as mum and dad have just got in from work and not during their favourite TV programmes.
Be prepared. Have a list of what you’d like to do and see but also listen to what mum and dad have got to say too. It’s always good to show some enthusiasm -nothing winds up parents more than moaning although complete indifference comes a very close second. If they haven’t yet decided on the destination, get on the internet and do some research - who knows, you might be the one that finds the bargain break to a fantastic Greek island.
Compromise Let’s face it – parents and teenagers don’t often make the best holiday companions. Probably never have and never will. But rather than endure an unhappy two weeks away, you can take steps to ensure you have a good time too. 5
Think about what you’d really like to do, whether that’s going to water parks, shopping, horse riding or even just having a bit of time to yourself. Negotiate with mum and dad that you’ll do what they want some of the time if they’ll do the same for you.
If you’ve got younger siblings, offer to look after them for a couple of hours in the morning so that your parents can catch up on some sleep or have a lazy start to the day. Brownie points for you that can definitely be put to use later.
Remember It may seem like one big hassle but don’t forget that holidays are supposed to be fun. You all want to have a good time and relax - talking to each other is the only way to make that happen.
Top Tips
Negotiate
Be prepared – do your research
So you want to bring a friend and the parents have vetoed your BFF. Rather than stomp off shouting ‘that’s sooooo unfair’, listen to their concerns. If they think your BF is a negative influence, state your case calmly and be rational.
It’s reasonable to challenge and/or contradict your parents but do it nicely - they’re much more likely to listen
If they don’t budge and there’s room in the budget, ask to bring another friend you all like – it’ll show you’re willing to listen to them and if they agree, your friend will also help pass the time quicker when you’re away.

id you know that a NEC card can get you discounts on travel, food, hotels; money off in high street shops such as New Look and Topshop AND can be used for proof of age, competitions, access to library facilities, sports centres and prizes? Young Scot is the national youth information charity for Scotland. They work with young people aged 11 - 26 to provide them with opportunities and information.
Are you missing out on all the benefits of the Young Scot NEC card? The Young Scot NEC Card is a really useful tool that can get you discounts on nearly 2,000 places in Scotland and a further 100,000 across Europe. And, most importantly, the card is completely FREE to all young people. Like all of Young Scot’s services, the NEC card is designed to help young people get the most out of life, especially for those times when a little bit of help can go a long way.
7
We all know that being young sometimes isn’t easy. The stress of exams and essays is more than enough to deal with, but the costs of revision books and past papers you need to buy throughout the year can add an extra pressure on your wallet or purse. To help out Young Scot have secured their cardholders a 20% discount on Bright Red Publishing and Leckie & Leckie books. For many young people learning to drive is an important milestone too. The Young Scot NEC card entitles holders to discounted driving lessons with the AA when booking 12 lessons or more. For those that just want to get out and about, there are also discounts with Scottish Citylink buses. Cardholders aged 16, 17 or 18 are entitled to 1/3 off adult single fares on buses all over Scotland and a 1/3 off train fares! Once you have got your discounted travel, you can head to Pizza Hut for a 20% discount on your food bill. The Young Scot NEC will also get you cheap tickets at Cineworld, Odeon and Vue cinemas. As well as all that, the card can also be used as reliable proof of age card because of the PASS hologram on it. So if you need to prove you’re young enough to get that concession on the bus or prove you’re old enough to get that new DVD you’ve been hankering after, then the card is the perfect way to do it. 8
If discounts, access to local services and valid proof of age aren’t enough, Young Scot card holders can also register on the Young Scot website (www.youngscot.org) to make use of additional services. Registered users can sign up to receive e-newsletters to keep updated with events and competitions taking place. There’s also lots of other stuff to check out on the site, such as podcasts, features, reviews and much more. So if your Young Scot NEC card is sitting in your bag doing nothing, bring it out and make use of it! It’ll save you money and get you access to all the things you are entitled too. And if you don’t have one, just call the Young Scot InfoLine on 0808 801 0338 to find out how you can get one. It’s even free to call, whether you are using a mobile or landline, so you really have no excuse!

I liked it because it was very enticing; it kind of wove you into the plot like you were there with the characters because it was so descriptive. Evie seemed to have this kind of puppy love that she thought was strong but was really quite stupid. It got a bit confusing with her mum, Peter and Joe - they all seemed to know each other from unexpected places. In the beginning, the book is like a jigsaw that has had its pieces scattered everywhere, but by the end the pieces all begin to fit together, strangely. I recommend it, but not for those people who aren’t ready for a VERY dark book.

I didn’t really like this book and thought it was very hard to get into. I found it was too young for me and not very complicated - there was not really anything that drew me in. The only thing I liked was the illustration of the map at the start because it made it easier to imagine where everything was set.
Ella Phillips
This book is excellent! It is very good, very well worth reading. You get books which are well written but don’t have a good storyline, or else have a good storyline but are badly written, but this is both. It is interesting finding out about what happened in Viking times. It has got that historical aspect, but it is also about what happens today
reviews in terms of the way that the love story plays out. The characters were very realistic and the choice of characters made the story great. The tension in the book made the story stand out for me. Also, another thing that I thought was that although the ending was what I wanted, it left me feeling that the story wasn’t finished - this was the only bad point about the book. I don’t read a lot of historical fiction though I’d like to, and this book definitely makes me want to read more. The author made me feel as if I were Thora, telling the story.

I thought this was really good, the storyline was great and the characters were really real. Although it IS different, you can still relate to some of the things that Lin is going through. It is written in a similar way to Twilight I thought. It wasn’t exactly the same; it just reminded me of it. It is quite a strange story, set in Germany and there’s this whole stuff about the glass - it is really individual. It is weird but quite imaginative.
This is the most amazing book. I don’t read that much historical fiction but I would definitely like to now I have read this. It is kind of set in a fictional place and I loved the fact that Celia Rees has carried on the idea of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and that Shakespeare is in the story. It’s such a good idea!! The book is really well written and although it was hard to get into at the start, after the first couple of chapters it was really good. I also loved the contrast between the poor and the more wealthy characters. I would definitely recommend this to all my friends.

I thought it took a wee bit to get into this, but once you do, this is a good book. It’s a good read if you are going on a journey for a short while and you need a good quick read. What’s good about it is the chapters are easy to understand. The story is exciting - I would get to a bit and wonder what was going to happen next and it made me think ‘wow’. The characters were ok. Their names made the book believable, which doesn’t always happen in kids’ books. Certain parts in the book were good because they were quite dramatic!

New
skatepark opens in
Saughton Crowds of skateboard, BMX and rollerblading enthusiasts flocked to the opening of a fantastic brand new huge skatepark in Saughton Park, near Gorgie on 8th May.
YouTube sensation and legendary BMXer Danny MacAskill was the star attraction performing an amazing display with The Clan Scotland cycle stunt team riders Duncan and Ali C. Some of the best Skateboarders
in Scotland gave us an exciting demonstration on the different ramps, jumps and bowls.
The new skatepark has beginner areas, intermediate ramps and challenging competition standard features and is intended for use by beginners as well as more expert riders. Some of the more experienced riders have said that the facility is the best in the UK and ‘up there’ in the wider
context of European skateparks! Before it opened, professional street artists decorated many of the skatepark’s surfaces with a variety of colourful images of skateboarders, in-line skaters and even Arthur’s Seat. Graffiti artists from across the country spent four days spray-painting the designs, which also incorporate drawings from pupils at Stenhouse Primary and Balgreen Primary.
So all you skaters, bmxers and bladers get over there and if you have never tried it before then go and have a go. There is a lot on offer from smooth tranny, down rails, and even some street inspired wallrides as well a beginner’s area with more gentle slopes. Don’t forget your protective gear as it gets quite busy!

Starring Sarah Jayne Dunn (Hollyoaks, Boeing-Boeing) and Rupert Hill (Coronation Street) Directed by Michael Gyngell. WHEN HARRY MET SALLY continues to be one of the most popular romantic comedies more than two decades after it hit the big screen starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
