MONILITHIC TRANSPARENT
Vanke is the largest real estate developers in China. And E-Town Vanke Brand Center is one of Vanke’s sales center located in Yi Zhuang, Beijing. Visitors can get to know the Jinyudongjun community and buy apartments here. The main programs include an exhibition area, a meeting area, a VIP room, and offices for staffs of Vanke. Given the programs, we make a volume distinguished vertically. The upper level which contains offices is covered by Parklex facade panel and can offer a quiet working environment with fewer openings on the facade. The lower level, which provides services for visitors, is designed as a transparent box.

Located in the Cortex community, a vibrant technology corridor of St. Louis, the project is an incubator for high-tech startup companies. The main program includes domestic workspace and temporary housing which allow startups to live and work, aspiring to achieve engagement, development as a whole community. The curvilinear roof of the incubator helps to establish the formal workspace under the roof and the casual events space above the roof.

In order to cover the large sharing space, ETFE membrane is chosen as the material of the northern part of the roof. With light support frame and transparent membrane layers, ETFE roof allows for the realization of the dripping form of the roof as well as the penetration of the natural sunlight. The north facade of the living tower is also made of ETFE for a reason of cold wind protection in the winter.

This project is located in a narrow base between Xihai (the West Sea) east bank and Deshengmen Inner Avenue in Beijing. Facing two rows of brick-hybrid structure plant construction on the side of the West Sea, the predecessor of the site was the prestigious Blue Lotus Bar, on the eastern side were a few little shabby temporary housing built in the seventies and eighties, Which had no conservation value, the owner hoped to renovate this land which goes through from the West Sea and Deshengmen Inner Avenue into a space with a kind of Beijing Hutong cultural characteristics, while meeting a series of very contemporary mixed-use features – including the tea house, dinner, party, office, conference, as well as living and entertainment.

Different – sized and –proportioned catalpa wood outdoor windows created through Casement Top-hang Casement MODE MODE Window Window Window a complex construction are observed within the various viewpoints bringing changes in the façade expressions while maximizing the possible viewing from the inside outward. One of my major works in this project is to design details of these windows and doors with the help of the manufacturer.

- EXPERIMENT OF MATERIALS One of the design strategies is trying to reduce the amount of construction: using existing footprint to make small-scale buildings, using wood, brick, tile‌all these local materials, using local craftsmanship but through new tectonic method, to respond to the problem in everyday scale and at the local level.

During the process of renovation, the original façade is covered with black travertines. To give the new façade a specific texture which is similar to traditional Chinese drawings, we asked workers to polish travertine pieces different times. In this way, black travertines can present different extents of gray colors. The final façade is kind like a collage composed of black travertine with varies gray colors and sizes.

New Youth Commune, a mixed youth community on the edge of Vanke Songhua Lake Resort bordering natural villages, contains 800 people with the upper space for Vanke staff, the middle rented to self-employed townspeople and the ground facilitating camping students and open to surrounding villagers. The project responds to the hybrid contemporaneity and proposes a new paradigm for community symbiosis: mutual cooperation and positive environmental interaction through inter-spatial sharing based on equality and self-sufficiency – a prototype community for contemporary ‘new youths’.

Contrast to tradition dormitory rooms, auxiliary functions (wc and storage) were separated from living function in this center. In this way, a small public space is created when we combined two living units. People can eat, talk and work in this place

Strategy 2_Form the Holes
Subordinate public spaces of each two units are connected with the atrium directly. Through arrangement of the functions in the secondary public space, openings of different sizes are presented on the inside facades surrounding the atrium. Sunlight from roof windows cast shadows on these holes. We expect that residents here can have imagines of living in the natural caves
05 W-ALL COMMUNITY Low Income Apartment, Tianjin, China
Academic Work, 2011 Fall Studio (Undergraduate) Architecture Design Instructor: Lin Geng, Zhang Tianyu Individual Work W-All Community is a project aiming to accommodate low-income people with high quality designed space which can satisfy their everyday needs and bring more positive possibilities to their life. The building is kind like a continuous wall part of which are folded into the center of the site. The wall-like building forms a large courtyard serving the residents while the folded edges of the wall form other four courtyards facing the street which act as the sharing space between the community and the city. This kind of sharing space is also designed with the expectation that they can help the public understand the life of low-income people.

Functional Boxes are places for temporary installation. Residents can change functions in these boxes to what they like. These boxes are vertical public spaces where people live at different levels can get together. It will also the place where the old could enjoy the sunlight.

And the demands for low-income people can be satisfied since the house type is designed according to the survey of these people. The houses in the W-All Community are products of taking advantage of the potential of construction. And seven house-types are blended with each other when composing of the building. In this way, the variety of space can be ensured.

06 Apartment with Observation Points Low Income Apartment, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Academic Work, 2016 Fall Core Studio (Graduate) Architecture Design Instructor: Monica Rivera Individual Work
Located in San Juan, this residential project is a result of the considerations of privacy, hot weather, and communication between neighbors. Windows and threshold have become the key design element in this project since they are related to all three factors listed above. Basically, all the windows extruded from the wall and placed with an angle. This kind of strategy is inspired by the experience of living in the house with one or two levels where people can observe the situation of the entrance and the courtyard by standing behind the surrounding windows. The angled windows provided the owners the observation points seeing what is going on outside while protecting their privacy by controlling the view seen from exterior.
