Place-Based Sustainable Design Framework This portfolio is a creative response to the remarkable rise of environmentalism associated with a given region’s need to retain its sense of unique identity. As shown in the color wheel, the four “realms of placebased design are mutually compatible domains that often work together to form a well-designed placebased landscape. The horizontal axis, corresponds to the chronological elements of a site, dating back to its past and reaching toward its future. At one end of the spectrum lies history. At the other end of the spectrum lies future, displaying a stream of possibilities that come next. The vertical axis of place-based design describes the site as a space, which serves as a palimpsest for environmental relationships and social connections. At one end of the spectrum lies environment. At the other end is human, which relates to the activities involving human participation. By coupling the dimensions, the designer proposed four realms of place-based sustainable design: site structure, design decision, experience, and culture;a place-based sustainable landscape design should encompass all four realms in order to incorporate principles of landscape sustainability into situational characteristics of place-based design.

The final concept accomplishes the following sustainable actions: • Manipulating the landform to create space and collect storm water • Supporting local economics by repurposing the historic police building with a cafe on the north side • Reclaiming on-site art pieces for place-making to connect the design to its context • Recognizing the users’ need for on-site food consumption by providing outdoor seating • Promoting social connections by providing an exciting place where things can happen • Balancing the conUlicts of safety and planting design by carefully selecting plan materials • ReconUiguring on-site food production and other social events • Promoting fuel-efUicient and multimodal transportation by providing bike racks and bus stops • Promoting environmental and cultural education

2. Publishing Building Renovation Location: Beijing, China Size: 39,200 SF Key Words: rooftop garden, sustainability, adaptation and reuse, workplace Located in Fentai, Beijing, Yushuzhuang Park was constructed in 1998 with a Sui and Tang style that echoed its historic context. The publishing building is one of the many under-utilized examples of architecture in the Park. By re-introducing the building to the park’s storm-water management systems, this project aims to complete the transformation of a public-service facility into a vibrant office environment. Through this concept, the design team promotes awareness of the benefits of energy-efficient design, renewable energy systems, and sustainability in the building’s users.

3. Underpass Park : Music and Urban Landscape Location: New Orleans, Louisiana Size: 7.7 acres Key Words: urban regeneration, civic life, stormwater management, sustainability, arts & culture This project seeks to brand the civic life in New Orleans by bridging urban spaces with the local culture. Based on the knowledge that the city is known for its strong association with jazz music, as the birth place ofthe genre, it is the nature of the design to consider music as one of the key components of the landscape.

3.2 Music and Color Bike route and outdoor sports Music and Arts Plaza Sustainable Education Land Art for Upper Body Exercise Color and music are both used to evoke emotions. The programs in this project are developed based on the relation between music, color, and urban space. The design process is based on the exploration of the scientific correlation between the languages of color and sound. According to the color wheel theory, the circle of fifths is used in the analysis of classical music, and the circle of fourths in the CAGED system is used in the analysis of jazz music. The colors that are mainly (but not exclusively) used are yellow, red, green, and purple. Through the combination of color coding, the spirit of urban space can be strengthened via its landform, music, and function. As in the composition of music, each urban space has its own rhythm, pitch, and timbre, which makes each place unique. Through color coding the programs based on the history and the

site’s characteristics, the project’s landscape design comes to include a diverse network of interlocking public spaces: pedestrian alleys, bike routes, land art plazas, and an overflow parking lot for beloved festivals such as Mardi Gras.
