INITIAL RESERCH OF POWERBOARD PACKAGING FORM flat, double layer, bright color, boxy EFFICIENCY OF USING MATREIALS The advantages of upper transparent layer are well exploited to show the actual powerboard and protect it. The cardboard is easier to print than plastic, so put the information on that can reduce the cost. The two materials are overlapping in some place, which waste some materials RAW MATERIAL The transparent is PET, and the cardboard is made of natural timber fiber. The two part are glued together. MANUFACTUEING PROCESS The plastic cover is made by vacuum forming, which consume energy to heat the plastic then use air suck it to the die mold. In the process, the energy is consumed to produce the heat and make air flow. The cardboard is cut by cutting machine, and printer prints the logo, word and background color on the surface of cardboard. The color manage system is probably CMYK. DISTRIBUTION Distributed from China, so the transportation is demand to sell in Australia. The long distance transport will cause consumption of fuel and emission of greenhouse gas. FOUNCTION The packaging is to sort the powerboard and its cable together. It will protect and make the transport easier. It also gives the product a nice appearance to catch the first sight of consumers. At the same time, it delivers the information of the powerboard. FOUNCTIONALITY Customers can see the power board form outside in the store, which it is easier for them to choose the product before buying it. They need to tear up the two part to open it because there is no slide on the plastic cover. On the top, the small hole is for placing them on the shelves in the supermarket.

DESIGN FOR REUSE It is not design to reuse after people open it. END OF THE LIFE The PET cover can be recycled but the process is very complex and demanding, and the function will reduce after recycling. The cardboard is environmentally friendly material, but the glue, color and additive may damage the recyclability. CUBE EFFICIENCY DURING TRANSPORT The hard plastic packaging almost is rectangular, there is a little bit empty space inside it. The sides of it will occupied some space when stack them together in a cube. USERS CONTEXT The actual product belongs the category of office supply. The targeted consumer is very broad. for them the safety of the powerboard, the longth of the cable, the number of slots and the space between slots may be important. ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY There is nearly no word and symbol to show their concern of sustainability.

BENCHMARKING

CATEGORY 1

IN THIS CATEGORY, PACKAGINGS ARE ALL MADE OF PLASTIC AND CARDBOARD. THE PLASTIC OUTER PART IS TRANSPARENT TO DISPLAY THE INSIDE PRODUCT AND THE CONTENT ON THE CARDBOARD. THE CARDBOARD ARE PRINTED TO SHOW THE SPECIFIC INFORMATION OF THE PRODUCT, AND BEING PROTECTED BY PLASTIC COAT.

ADAVANTAGES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

THE PLASTIC COAT IS VERY STURDY TO HOLD AND PROTECT THE INSIDE PRODUCT AND THE CARDBOARD. THE CABLE AND THE POWER BOARD CAN BE WELL SORTED AND MAKE IT LOOK ORGANIZED. BIG SPACE ON CARDBOARD CAN BE USED TO SHOW INFORMATIONS. THE TRANSPARENT PLASTIC REDUCES COLOR INK TO PRINT THE PRODUCT IMAGE ON THE BOARD. THE WHOLE MANUFACTORYING PROCESS CAN BE DONE BY MACHINE.

DISADAVANTAGES: 1. 2. 3. 4.

THE PLASTIC OUTSIDE HAS NO PLACE TO OPEN, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE CARDBOARD DAMAGE AS PEOPLE OPEN IT. HARD COVER CAN INCREASE THE OCUPIED SPACE, LOWER THE EFFECIENCY OF TRANSPORT. PLASTIC COVER IS NOT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AS CARDBOARD. MATERIAL IS WASTED FOR SOME AREA, BECAUSE THE PLASTIC AND THE CARDBOARD ARE OVERLAPPING WITH EACH OTHER.

ADAVANTAGES: 1. THERE IS NO GLUE BEING USED, BECAUSE THE PLASTIC PART AR E HEAT AND PRESS TOGETHER.

ADAVANTAGES: 1. THE CABLE ARE WELL SORTED, MAKING THE SPACE USE MORE EFFECIENT.

DISADAVANTAGES: 1. THERE IS NO WARDS ON THE BOARD TO NOTICE PEOPLE THE CARDBOARD ARE RECYCLABLE. 2. NO SPECIFIC INFORMATION ABOUT WHICH KIND OF THE PLASTIC IS THAT AND ITS RECYCALBILITY.

DISADAVANTAGES: 1. THE CARDBOARD AND THE PLASTIC PART ARE GLUED TOGETHER. 2. NO SPECIFIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE WHICH KIND OF THE PLASTIC IS THIS AND ITS RECYCALBILITY.

ADAVANTAGES: 1. THERE ARE SPECIFIC WARDS TO ALERT PEOPLE THAT THE CARDBOARD IS FULLY RECYCALBLE AND NEED TO BE PUT IN RECYCAL BIN. 2. CATEGORY 2 IN THIS CATEGORY, THE MOST PART OF PACKAGING IS PVC PLASTIC AND THE TOP IS CARDBOARD. THE CARDBOARD HAVE A LITTLE SPACE TO SHOW THE BRAND AND SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

ADVANTAGES:

1. MATERIAL CONSUMPTION IS SMALLER THAN CATEGORY 1. 2. THERE IS NO EXTRA SPACE IS WASTED DURING THE TRANSPORT, DUE TO THE SOFT BAG. 3. THE WEIGHT IS SMALLER THAT CATEGORY 1.

A LARGE PROPORTION OF PLASTIC IS USED. THE AVALABLE SPACE FOR DISPLAY INFORMATION IS NOT SUFFICIENT AS CATEGORY 1. THE PLASTIC BAG ARE SOFT, MAY NOT BE AS STURDY AS STIFF PLASTIC COVER. THE ARRANGEMENT OF CABLE AND BOARD IS POOR. NO SPECIFIC SPACE TO OPEN IT WITHOUGHT DAMAGING.

CATEGORY 3 IN THIS CATEGORY, THE ENTIRE PACKAGING IS MADE OF CARDBOARD. COMPARED WITH PLASTIC, CARDBOARD IS MORE SUSTAINABLE. IT IS RECYCLABLE AND GAIN FROM NATRAL RESOURCE LIKE TIMBER BANBOO.

ADVANTAGES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

MATERIAL IS RECYCABLE. PLANTIFUL SPACE TO PRINT INFORMATION. THE WHOLE PACKAGING IS TIDY AND ORGANISED, CONSUMER WILL NOT SEE INTERTWINED CABLE. FULLY COVERED BY CARDBOARD, THE POWER BOARD IS PROTECTED SAFELY. ESAY TO OPEN WITHOUT DAMAGE.

DISADVANTAGES:

1. THERE IS A BIG SPACE IS ENPTY INSIDE THE BOX, THAT WILL CAUSE LOW TRANSPORTATION EFFECIENCY. 2. CUSTOMERS CAN NOT SEE THE ACTRUAL PRODUCT, ONLY THE PICTURE OF THE PRODCUT. 3. IT MAY INCREASE THE WEIGHT.

CATEGORY 4 IN THIS CATEGORY, THE WHOLE PACKAGING IS PLASTIC.,THE FIRST ONE IS HARD AND THE SECOND ONE IS PLASITC BAG. THEY BOTH BE PRINTED ON THE PLASTIC SURFACE.

ADVANTAGES:

1. THE PACKAGING CAN STRONGLY HOLD PRODUCT. 2. THERE IS NO EXTRA SPACE IS WASTED DURING THE TRANSPORT. 3. THE WEIGHT IS SMALLER THAT CATEGORY 1. ( THE FIRST ONE IS HEAVIER THAN THE SECOND ONE.)

DISADVANTAGES:

1. A LARGE AMONT OF PLASTIC IS USED, AND IT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE COMPARED WITH CARDBOARD.

ADAVANTAGES: 1. INFORMATION IS FULLY DISPLAYED, TRANSPARENT PART ALSO ALLOW PEOPLE TO SEE THE REAL PRODUCT. 2. UNDER THE BOTTOM, THERE IS A NOTICABLE SIGN AND WORDS TELL PEOPLE THE PACKAGING IS NOT RECYCLABLE, AND GIVETHE SUSTAINABILITY RANK. 3. BOXY BUT NO WASTED SPACE INSIDE, AND ADDITIONAL MATERIAL.

They are normal people who need a powerboard to use, and seek for the better quality and design, not only the basic function. It is in the middle of the price in the market place.

TRANSPORTATION The edge may be smaller to increase the space use. Cube efficiency

END OF LIFE Should put obvious plastic type on the plastic part. Print wards to remind people the cardboard and plastic need to be recycled, especially the cardboard.

PRODUCT USE Difficult to open, need use scissor. Can not be reused after being opened.

USER SCENARIO

The cardboard are easily teared up, because the two parts are hard to separate. It does affect the image of the product as a whole.

the residue is viewed as contamination , cause the difficulty when it is recycled.

The part is excessive and may be reduced. It is really disturbing when try to clean them up and throw them separately in the bin.

USER FEEDBACK AND CRITIQE

The lid is hard to assemble and even open for users. Its way to interlock with each without glue is complimented by peer viewing, but it can be improved to be more suit for the design.

Key Point: easy to open and assemble more suit for the design.

THIRD DEVELOPED MODEL

1. The bottom of the packaging can't reach the original result. If I force it to be bond, glue is required. 2. The top slot and pin need to be twisted. For better result, the tolerance should be done. 3. If the top need to be change, the open perforation should be designed again.
