Introduction Little Monster is a small animation about my type one diabetes and the troubles I face having it and dealing with day-today life. It shows step-by-step, the day I found out that I had type one diabetes and how hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia can effect my mood and ability to do certain tasks. In creating this short animation I hope that I can educate the viewers on how type one diabetes can effect my life as well as other type one diabetics and their families.

Initial Character Designs

To help with designing my diabetes character I looked at Disney’s flour bag character design. This helped with understanding that characters can be created from inanimate objects, I also enabled me to experiment with expression and movement.

Clay Modelling After designing the character, it was then suggested that I create him out of clay. This technique helped with ensuring that his proportions were correct and it allowed for me to look at the how handling the character and moving him while sculpting would effect the texturing. I then used this texturing effect to create a bump map for my character when creating and texturing him in Autodesk Maya.

Computer Modelling

I then progressed and worked on creating the character ‘Diabetes’ in Autodesk Maya. I started building the character using the clay model images and my character drawings as reference. Towards the end of building him, I then used my instinct to change his design slightly to make him more organic and realistic. I was considering creating the character with more human features such as a nose and ears but then decided otherwise as I wanted the character to be more monsterlike.
