WELCOME TO

LANULLVABRYGGA Only 8 kilometers from Atlanterhavsveien

The story of Lanullva In the village Lyngstad, by the Atlantic Ocean, in the clothing manufacturing county Møre og Romsdal, there lived an industrious woman called Brit Vinje Lyngstad. She had worked in the ready-to-wear business for many years. She was an educated Clothing Industry Technician and had a lot of knowledge about wool and textiles. She got her first knitting machine aged 12. Brit ran a farm with her husband. After long working days on the farm, he would come home sweaty and cold, and Brit was worried about him. She developed a special wool underwear, using a unique knitting method that ensured that sweat would be wicked away from the body. The air pockets and ventilation in the knitting pattern helped make the garments very insulating. This prevented Brit’s husband from getting cold. In 1994, Brit established the company Vinje Klær AS. Today, the company is owned by Brit’s daughter, Gunn Anne Lyngstad. The clothes it produces are all made from pure merino wool. The collection includes modern knitting products for babies, children and adults. Our lovely shop is located on a restored trading dock dating back to 1882. You will find us at Naustvika, 6493 Lyngstad. Opening hours: 09-16, Saturdays 11-14.

The Atlantic Road

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL

JOURNEY IN THE WORLD The Atlantic Road isn't just the Construction of the Century in Norway – according to Lonely Planet, it can even mend broken hearts.

T

oday, the road between sea and sky is one of Norway's biggest tourist attractions, but strong forces fought to prevent the project. Both the opposition and the local highways agency believed the project would fail. Floating path

Today, the Atlantic Road is a huge success, and two further tourist attractions have recently been opened: The 550-metre long floating path and the special café at Eldhusøya island, which is run by the organisation National Tourist Routes in Norway. The floating path is made from grates that float above the terrain, supported by posts. Construction as art

The new tourist attraction at the Atlantic Road is a project that blurs the lines between construction and art. The floating path crosses the roof of the special service building. The building winds along the southern side of Eldhusøya island, and features a pattern of specially designed windows along its 150-metre long facade. Inside, you will find an information desk, a café and restrooms. Construction of the Century

The organisation National Tourist Routes in Norway has won all manner of awards, including in the ’Best in the world’ category. In 2005, the Atlantic Road was named the Construction of the Century in Norway. The award was sponsored by the construction industry and the national broadcaster NRK in connection with the 100th anniversary of the dissolution of Norway's union with Sweden. The world's best road trip

– The road that crosses this "infamous stretch of ocean" was hailed as the world's best road trip by the British daily The Guardian. In 2006, the newspaper ranked the Atlantic Road ahead of more famous roads in for instance Australia and The Himalayas. The most beautiful car journey

In 2007, the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten asked their readers to vote for Norway's most beautiful car journey among 11 selected alternatives. The Atlantic Road came second, only beaten by the iconic tourist destination Trollstigen by a small margin. Both are located in Møre og Romsdal, so you can easily visit them both in one journey. 5

THE ATLANTIC ROAD – just as beautiful during a storm as it is during sunset.

The world's best place to mend a broken heart

The same year, Lonely Planet's travel guide (Blue List) decided to find the perfect place to go after a break-up. – Hustadvika and the Atlantic Road is the best place to go to contemplate how you got dumped. Preferably in the autumn; the view, wind, waves and cries of the gulls are the perfect medicine, whether you are working through grief or recovering from being dumped, wrote Lonely Planet. Norway’s best bicycle trip

In 2010, the impressive road, which zigzags across islands and islets, was named Norway’s best bicycle trip. Ut.no and NRK had 7 finalists, but it was the Atlantic Road that got the most votes. The world’s best for car testing

In 2011, the British motoring show Fifth Gear informed its millions of viewers that the Atlantic Road is the world’s best place for car testing. Today there are hardly any car makes that haven’t 6

used or aren’t currently using the Atlantic Road as a location for filming their adverts. National tourist road

In 2012, the Atlantic Road was officially named one of only 18 national tourist roads in Norway, and given a status as something of the very best Norway has to offer. Did not want to build

The engineering asphalt artwork from which you can go deep sea fishing by car and catch spawning cod by the roadside was no obvious choice, however. There was a lot of hostility against the construction of what is today one of Norway’s most visited tourist attractions. – Yes, it was a difficult journey with many obstacles. Environmental concerns and the height of the bridges were the two things that caused the most resistance against the project. There was also opposition at the county council and road administration office, says former mayor of Eide municipality, Oddbjørn Dagfinn Silseth (conservative).

FACTS • Building commenced on 1 August 1983. The road opened on 7 July 1989 at a cost of mNOK 122. Partially financed as a toll road and paid off in June 1999. • The most spectacular part of the Atlantic Road consists of eight bridges totalling 891 metres, that traverse a number of islets and skerries. • The bridges you will cross if driving from west to east are: Vevangstraumen bridge, 119 metres with a clearance of 10 metres. Hulvågen bridges – three bridges – totalling 239 metres with a clearance of 4 metres. Storseisundet bridge, 260 metres with a clearance of 23 metres. Geitøysundet bridge, 260 metres with a clearance of 6 metres. Store Lauvøysund bridge, 52 metres with a clearance of 3 metres. Lille Lauvøysund bridge, 115 metres with a clearance of 7 metres. • The Atlantic Road is one of Norway’s ten most visited nature-based tourist attractions.

One vote majority

Jarle Haga (liberal) was the mayor of Averøy in the early 80s. He reveals that the Atlantic Road was not a project recommended by the head of the county’s road administration office. – There will be so little traffic that there will hardly be enough money to pay the people working the toll booths, said the head of the county’s road administration office. I realised then that we had to make some political moves, says Haga. He also remembers that when the Atlantic Road was proposed to the county executive board, the motion carried by just one vote. This is how close the project was to not being realised. 12 hurricanes

The construction of the road was also a big challenge. The road workers Finnøya experienced 12 hurricanes during the construction of the Atlantic Road before it was opened in 1989. The road was partly financed by toll money, and it wasHarøya Fjørtofta paid off in 1999, five years earlier than expected. The route the Atlantic Road follows, across bridges and reclaimed land from islet to isletHaramsøya way out to sea, was originally planned for a railway – until the 1970s, when the route was changed to a road. Today, this tourist route goes from Bud in Fræna to Kårvåg in Averøy. Vigra

THE SPECTACULAR

TROLLSTIGEN Trollstigen and the surrounding Trollstigen plateau is one of Norway’s most spectacular and frequently visited tourist attractions. Over the past few years, a great effort has been made to turn this destination into one of the world’s best tourist routes.

T

he modernised version of Trollstigen and the Trollstigen plateau along the national tourist route from Geiranger to Trollstigen has been named one of the best tourist facilities in Europe, in competition with 18 other European attractions.

Nerve-racking view

At the top of all the hairpin bends that zig-zag up the steep mountainside, you will find a number of spectacular and breezy lookout points. The largest viewing platform is very dramatic, and overhangs a cliff with a sheer drop of over 200 metres. At the very edge there is a breezy corner with a glass fence for those with nerves of steel. From this point there is an incredible view of Trollstigen as it is winding its way along vertical mountains and up the steep mountainside. There are alternative viewing points for those of a more cautious persuasion. It took many years of work and mNOK 200 to create the ’new’ Trollstigen and the Trollstigen plateau, as well as the lookout points above Stigfossen and Trollstigen.

Dronninga (the queen). Steel and concrete

Now that the Trollstigen plateau and its modern architecture is in place, the road is no longer the only tourist magnet. The Trollstigen plateu is a major attraction in itself, with its modern architecture that unifies the buildings, paths and viewing platforms. Everything is made from steel, concrete and glass. The buildings

The main building consists of two parts that wind around each other. It contains a café and an information desk, but is also an important lookout point in the landscape. The other building is shaped as an embankment, and doubles as a flood defence when the river Istra reaches its highest levels. Inside the embankment, there is a kiosk, a souvenir shop and restrooms. Between the lookout points there are paths and stairs that allow you to wander around this impressive landscape.

Madness

Popular

The story of Trollstigen began as far back as 1916. That is when the Norwegian parliament approved the building of a road across Stigfjell, even though many people considered it to be sheer madness. The construction of the mountain pass started in 1928 and was something akin to an adrenalin sport in such a steep area prone to rockfalls. On the 31st of July 1936, King Haakon opened the new road across Stigfjell. The road was named Trollstigen. In order to boost the tourist industry, surrounding dramatic mountains were given names such as Trollveggen (the troll wall), Bispen (the bishop), Kongen (the king) and

Every year, around 130,000 vehicles drive up or down the 11 hairpin bends. This road in the heart of Romsdal has a 9% climb and zig-zags its way 825 MASL, from Isterdalen up to Stigrøra.

10

Geiranger

Trollstigen and the Trollstigen plateau are part of the national tourist route from Geiranger to Trollstigen, which has been improved considerably over the past few years. Along the route you will find attractions such as Gudbrandsjuvet, Juvet landscape hotel, Flyldalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen.

TROLLISH WORDS ”Did you know that there are more than 200 place names, mountains and areas that begin with Troll, and there are also a number of variations of words for trolls, such as jutul”.

TROLLSTIGEN AND TROLLSTIGENPLATEAU • The Trollstigen road has been vital for transportation between Valldal and Åndalsnes for hundreds of years. Initially as a path and then as a bridleway, until the Trollstigen road was app roved in 1916. Parts of the old bridleway are still visible and can be followed by those who prefer to walk. It is an exiting alternative if you wish to experience the road as it was of old. • The Trollstigen plateu was built as part of the national tourist routes project. The building work started in 2005 and was completed in 2012. The budget was mNOK 55, but the actual cost was nearly mNOK 200. • The Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s use of architecture on the national tourist routes has gained a lot of attention both nationally and internationally, and won several awards. The Trollstigen plateau is the most critically acclaimed tourist route. .• There are other tourist attractions nearby, such as the vertical Trollveggen, which over the years has claimed the lives of 19 climbers and base jumpers. • It isn’t just nature that is world class here. The Trollveggen visitor centre has won awards and been hailed as one of the world’s ten most beautiful new design restaurants.

”Did you know that the dramatic Trolltindene in Trollveggen according to legend are not regular mountains, but trolls that turned to stone? It all began with a wedding that turned into a wild party. The trolls drank so hard that they didn’t notice the sunrise, and the entire wedding party turned to stone and formed Norhern Europe’s highest vertical mountain wall. This is why the mountain peaks have names such as Brura (the bride), Brudgommen (the groom), Brurjentene (the bridesmaids), Trollspiret (the troll spire), Trollparet (the troll couple), Trollgubben (the old troll man), Trollklørne (the troll claws) and Trollryggen (the troll back)”. ”Did you know that several sources tell the now 300year-old story of the young maid Marte Oldsdotter Strand from Åfarnes in Romsdal, who supposedly were taken into the mountain by trolls with ”tails as big as foxes” and kept imprisoned there? Marte was thrown out of the mountain, naked, when she refused to marry one of the trolls. In May 1965, the local bailiff asked Marte to come to Molde, accompanied by her father, to explain herself in front of eight jurors. They determined that the girl was credible and in her right mind, and that she most likely had been captured by trolls”. ”Did you know that the perfect place for trolls is the Trollheimen mountain range on the border between Møre og Romsdal and Sør-Trøndelag? Several of the mountains in Trollheimen have trollish names, such as Trollhetta og Trolla”. ”Did you know that as late as 1999, a group of troll hunters explored the rumours that there are still trolls living in the caves of Blåhøy mountain in Trollheimen? The troll-hunters found no conclusive evidence”. ”Did you know that trolls have deep roots in Nordic fiction and fairy tale traditions, and date back to Norse mythology? They have been a source of fear and uneasiness from time immemorial, and having any kind of dealings with them was strictly forbidden”.

Kristiansund

IN THIS TOWN YOU CAN VISIT

FOUR SEPARATE LANDS

IN KRISTIANSUND, you can visit Innlandet, Kirkelandet, Nordlandet and Gomalandet in just 20 minutes.

This town consists of four lands, has local place names like Tahiti and Marokko (Morocco), and it is the home of the world’s first ever Norwegian as well as the world’s most famous

Krogvold fascinated by the town

Another famous Norwegian, the photographer Morten Krogvold, has become fascinated by Kristiansund in his long-term role as the leader of the town's much-acclaimed photography festival Nordic Light: – This environment is real, and there is a fascinating blend of old fishing nostalgia, brutal post-war architecture, and the nearness of the Atlantic Ocean, says Krogvold. He says that some of the world's most famous and fêted photographers have described Kristiansund as "magic" and "the most beautiful place on earth". The world's oldest public transportation

The heart of the charming town is Sundbåten, which is anchored in the town's history. The boat is one of the world's oldest means of public transportation that continues to be in operation. Ever since 1876 it has ferried passengers between the four 'lands'; the boroughs Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Nordlandet and Gomalandet. The entire round takes just under 20 minutes. The first and the most famous

Findings have been made in Kristiansund that indicate that the world's first Norwegian may very well have been a local. The first finding from the early Stone Age was made at Nordlandet, or Marokko, as the borough is known locally. Why it is called Marokko, no one knows. What everyone does know, is that the world's most famous Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, was born and raised in Kristiansund.. Tahiti

Guitarist and songwriter Frode Alnæs no longer lives in town, but he is still a dedicated patriot. He did a great job restoring the town's oldest cafeteria, Dødeladen, which was build in the 1700s. In connection with this, he also initiated the Tahiti Festival at Innlandet. Or at Tahiti, as Innlandet is known locally. Alnæs still spearheads the festival, which attracts a number of national and international artists each year. The opera town

T

here is much about Kristiansund that isn't normal, but that is just lovely, says music artist Øystein Dolmen, one half of the popular Norwegian duo Knutsen & Ludvigsen. And according to their absurd and immortal Kristiansunds Nasjonalsang (Kristiansund's National Anthem), you can visit Kristiansund for no reason whatsoever. An absurd universe

– You can travel to Singapore, Paris, Milan. But that's boring! Go to Kristiansund. It is a town that overwhelms you. The locals are very special, colourful and extrovert people. Kristiansund isn't normal. It is an absurd universe, but that is just lovely, Øysten Dolmen once said to the newspaper Bergens Tidende, describing the town that is known for its blandaball (fish and potato dumplings), opera and klippfisk (bacalao).

Musically speaking, Kristiansund is probably best known for being the home town of artists such as Lynni Treekrem, Frode Alnæs and Øyvind 'Elg' Elgenes, but it is also known as the opera town. The Norwegian folk opera was established in Kristiansund by Edvard Bræin as early as in 1928. The Norwegian Opera in Oslo opened 32 years later. The Bacalao Town

Kristiansund is founded on bacalao (dried, salted cod, known locally as 'klippfisk'), a tradition dating back to the 1600s. Naturally, Kristiansund the Bacalao Town has a bacalao museum, a bacalao festival, a bacalao opera (Donna Bacalao) and a bacalao guitar. The latter was specially ordered by Frode Alnæs. And virtually every restaurant in town serves bacalao. 'Ballsund'

Ballsund is another name for Kristiansund, as blandaball (dumplings made from ground fish, potato and onion) is one of the locals' favourite dishes. And you can still by genuine fish and chips from some of the town's snack bars. 13

SUNDBÅTEN is a legendary experience in the heart of town. Photo: Fred Jonny Hammerø.

Norway's best preserved

These days, business life in Kristiansund and Nordmøre tends to revolve around oil, gas and big money. Before the oil adventure started and the ’black gold’ was discovered off the coast of Norway, Kristiansund was almost eradicated. During the bombing in 1940, 900 houses burned down to the ground. The town was rebuilt in a typical but muted functionalist style. The rebuilt Kristiansund has been held up as one of the cultural environments of 20th century Norway that is most worthy of preservation. In the town's centre you will find the country's best preserved examples of post-war architecture. Norway's smallest borough

To find Norway's smallest borough, you have to cross 14 km of ocean. There you will find the amazing archipelago and fishing village Grip, surrounded by 200 islets and skerries. Grip can be reached by passengererboat. The minuscule island's last permanent resident gave up in 1974, and left the island, his rubber boots and his sou'wester behind shortly before Christmas. Here you can read more about Grip, which also was known as Norway's smallest municipality until 1964. The Atlantic Road

Kristiansund is the ideal starting point for several amazing road 14

trips, such as crossing the ocean on the Atlantic Road or exploring Aursjøveien in the wild mountains of Sunndal. You can also cycle across the Atlantic Road. It has been named Norway's most beautiful bicycle trip by NRK and ut.no. The Atlantic Road, one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions, also allows fishing from some of its bridges. Hiking

There is a great hike starting at the town's airport (!) Kvernberget. 'Fjordruta' encompasses 13 cabins, both by the shore and on top of untouched mountains. The route can easily be split up into shorter hikes. Deep sea fishing

Kristiansund also offers fishing possibilities for children and adults. A popular alternative is a 3-hour deep sea fishing trip onboard the former rescue boat MS Hagbart Waage. You will find everything you need onboard the boat, including fishing equipment, food and drink. Atlanterhavsbadet

If you'd like to feel like a fish in the sea yourself, you should visit Atlanterhavsbadet. This pool facility was ranked among the top four in Norway in the Consumer Council's and Consumer Ombudsman's extensive quality test of Norwegian pools.

Molde

JAZZ, ROSES AND

PANORAMA FROM THE VIEWPOINT VARDEN, you can enjoy the sight of 222 mountain peaks, the Molde panorama.

Few cities the size of Molde have been visited by so many world leaders and prominent persons. The reason is Kjell Magne Bondevik, “an ordinary guy from Molde”, former Foreign Minister and former Prime Minister - twice.

a high elevation: ”Yes, often from the Varden vantage point, 407m above sea level. From there I could point out, explain and show them Molde,” says Bondevik. The stunning views of islets and islands and the panorama of 222 summits is awesome – also to the powerful. Moldepanorama

The famous Molde panorama with its 222 summits viewed from Varden is one of the city’s most important tourist attractions and Bondevik recommends that all visitors should see this. The vantage point is an hour’s walk from the city centre or ten minutes by car. Israel’s former prime minister Ariel Sharon and Gordon Brown, the former prime minister of Great Britain, are two of several world leaders to admire the views from Vardestua as the prime minister’s guests. ”’An uncommonly lovely city,’ was often the comment when my guests looked across the fjord, mountains and the city,” says Bondevik, who has always been a proud and active Molde ambassador. The Jazz Festival

As was the case for Kaiser Wilhelm’s annual visits, Sharon’s visit to the small city on the north-western coast of Norway in the summer of 2003 caused quite a stir. The visit required strict security measures and caused a hiccup at the start of another of Molde’s important attractions: the Jazz Festival. The Molde International Jazz Festival is an important national event and started in 1961, it is the oldest European jazz festival in continuous operation. Every year, the festival draws 100,000 people along with a number of world famous stars in pop, rock and jazz. ”The Jazz Festival placed Molde on the map and is an event I attempt to visit every year,” says Bondevik. Football fan

Aker stadium, where Molde plays its home matches, is another place the football enthusiastic Prime Minister likes to show off. The football facility is described as one of Europe’s most beautiful and is currently one of the city’s most visited attractions. Ministerial meeting at stadium 201

The Cathedral

A building that Bondevik proudly points to is Molde Cathedral. Molde’s church was bombed to smithereens during World War II. Rebuilding of the church began eight years after the end of the war. It was consecrated in 1957 and has since 1983 been the cathedral for the Møre diocese. Bondevik delivered the sermon during a service when he hosted the visit from Island’s then prime minister, David Oddson, and his wife. 18

”A beautiful and excellent church,” says Bondevik.

The roots

Kjell Magne Bondevik continues to have close ties with Molde, and he and his wife Bjørg visit the city as often as possible. They met and fell in love while students in Molde and married in the city church in 1970. ”Molde and Romsdal are the roots of my life. Its natural surroundings, culture and people have left their traces. I am simply grateful to call myself a Romsdalite,” says Kjell Magne Bondevik.

Romsdalstrappa

Romsdalstrappa makes the popular hike even easier and more spectacular. 22

Rampestreken is a 20-metre long steel ramp – or photography ramp – of which 8 metres seem to hang in thin air. At this point you are 565 metres above the alpine town Åndalsnes, which is just an hour’s drive from Molde. At the very tip of the ramp, only a grate supports the people who dare to walk to the edge. The view takes most people’s breath away. – Butterflies in the stomach, mighty, breezy and amazing are some of the reactions from hikers who have stood at the edge of the ramp.

Romsdalstrappa was created as a result of Romsdalseggen’s enormous popularity. So many people started hiking up the mountain that erosion made the stair a necessity. The wear on the mountainside made the steep descent parti-

cularly demanding, especially when the roots were wet from rain and the ground was muddy. Romsdalstrappa was the solution to the problem, and the lookout point Rampstreken gave Romsdalseggen another dimension – and another attraction. The part of the path that was most worn has now become a large, long stair made by sherpas and experts from Nepal. Baby buggies and walking frames

The 260-metre walk up to Nebba (68 MASL) is accessible for baby buggies and walking frames. The various improvements of the path are made from concrete and brown corten steel, in addition to stone. There are also handrails in the same materials. The stair is made in the same architectural style as the areas surrounding the Trollstigen plateu and Gudbrandsjuvet in Valldal. For those who do not wish to walk along the entire Romsdalseggen ridge, Romsdalstrappa is an opportunity to experience the wonderful mountain air and magnificent views. Kongen og Dronninga

In just a short time, Romsdalseggen has become one of the most popular mountain hikes in Norway. It is thought that more than 50,000 people will walk across the ridge this year. The concept was first launched in 2009. The hike across the spectacular and popular Romsdalseggen ridge is signposted and maintained by Molde & Romsdals Trekking Association. At the starting point you can look straight up at the 1,550-metre high, legendary Romsdalshorn mountain. Along the way, you are surrounded by royalties such as Kongen (the king, 1,614 MASL) and Dronninga (the queen, 1,544 MASL).

• Three routes: Normal route, Romsdalseggen via Høgnosa (slightly less airy), and Romsdalseggen Extreme (mountain guide recommended). • The normal route takes about 5-8 hours. • View of the Romsdal Alps, including Trollveggen, Romsdalshorn and Vengetindene. Along the ridge, you will also see Kongen, Dronninga and Store Trolltind. You can see all the way to Molde and out to the Norwegian Sea. • Romsdalstrappa and the lookout point Rampestreken is located on the descent from Nesaksla towards Åndalsnes town centre. • Lonely Planet has named the hike the 8th best in the entire world. • It is also on The Norwegian Trekking Association’s list of the ten most popular mountain hikes in Norway. Daily bus departures from Åndalsnes to Vengedalen from the 1st of July to the 30th of September. The bus goes from Åndalsnes Skysstasjon and up to the car park in Vengedalen, where the routes start. Follow the signposts to Romsdalseggen.

Bud

Bud is another fishing village on the Romsdal coast. This village in Fræna municipality has approx. 1,000 inhabitants, and the feared and fascinating ocean stretch Hustadvika as its closest neighbour. Bud is a paradise for those who love nature and fishing with several apartments and boathouses for rent. Grip

The minuscule island Grip was Norway’s smallest municipality up until 1964 and is located 14 km out to sea, surrounded by 200 islets and skerries, 40 minutes from Kristiansund by boat. The island’s last permanent resident gave up in 1974, and left the island, his rubber boots and his sou’wester behind shortly before Christmas. With its 47 metres, Grip Lighthouse on the Bratthårskollen skerry is Norway’s tallest lighthouse. There are people here only in summer. The picturesque buildings are charming and colourful. In the midst of the buildings is a 500-year–old, venerable, stave church. Daily boat transport in the summer season and there is also a cafe.

A fishing village well worth visiting is the depopulated and idyllic Bjørnsund, where passenger boat captain Størk Huse grew up. – A great place that oozes of coastal culture and where the houses now are used as holiday and summer houses, says Størk. The fishing village consists of three islands and is located just west of Bud at the very tip of the Romsdal peninsula. Around the year 1900, there were between five and six thousand people living in the fishing village, which was depopulated around 1970. There are regular boat departures from Harøysund/Bud during the summer season. Flatflesa fyr

A more extreme experience can be had by living at Flatflesa Lighthouse and spending the night there. The lighthouse is located between Gossa island in Aukra municipality and Ona, and has only ever been inhabited by the lighthouse keepers and their families, says Huse. The lighthouse keeper’s home has now been restored and is often used by smaller groups as accommodation during exciting adventures on a desolate, electricity-free island. 25

FISHING TRIP

IN A HOT TUB On board this boat you can jump into a hot tub if the fishing trip were to become a cold and unpleasant experience, and feel like a fish in water. TEXT: FREDDY KONGSBERG

”Everything is possible here. We make fishing trips to order if this is wanted – also with a hot tub,” says Olav Magne Strømsholm in Strømsholmen Sjøsportsenter. The sea sports centre is situated by the Atlantic Road, the road through an archipelago that is one of Norway’s most visited tourist attractions. Olav Magne Strømsholm has operated the centre since 1981, and he has experienced more wet nature than most people. A large majority of those joining the fishing trips are foreigners. ”As I said, it is the fishing tourists that want to fish as much as possible, we have passionate anglers who may release the fish back into the sea, and then we have families with children who want to enjoy the experience,” Olav Magne Strømsholm says about those who take part in the fishing trips. 3: Around Midsund Island

It is hardly possible to visit Nordmøre and Romsdal without driving the Atlantic Road, the national tourist road between Averøy and Bud (FV 64). At Eldhusøya in Averøy Municipality is the service centre that has a spectacular ‘svevesti’ (floating path) around the island. Drive slowly, stop often by fine picnic areas and watch world class sunsets. Countless opportunities to fish from the shore, and in the fishing village Bud, visit the restored coastal fortress and Bud Museum.

The rennovated FV 63 from 1936 is a masterpiece of road art. The road lies between Åndalsnes in Romsdal and Valldal at Sunnmøre. Turn off at Sogge bridge, if you started from Romsdalen. There is a fantastic trip to the top of Trollstigen by car (take a taxi) and thereafter cycle down to Åndalsnes. Turn off from the main road by Trollstigen Camping and Gjestegård in Isterdalen and cycle the old road to Åndalsnes.

The island municipality Midsund consists of the main islands Otrøya, Midøya and Dryna. Arrival by ferry Mordalsvågen-Solholmen or Brattvåg-Dryna. Take RV 668 to Midøya and see the old stone wall that in 1658-60 was the border between Norway and Denmark. At Dryna, I recommend a visit to Franskhelleren where 4 French soldiers hid for 6 months during WW II. Otrøya offers excellent mountain walks. Opstadhornet, at 737 masl is the highest peak.

Many people cycle this route, but a car will do as well. Take the ferry from Molde to Sekken and make the 20km trip around the island. Half the road trip is on gravel. There are several vantage points and opportunities to fish from the shore. By Sekken church, you will find the bauta stones in memory of the Battle of Sekken where Håkon Herdebrei (Haakon the broad-shouldered) was killed.

9: Vengedalen

A short but beautiful road at Rauma. Drive to Isfjorden and follow the signs to Vengedalen where you take a 9km toll road up to Vengedalsetra and Vengedal lake. Good fishing and swimming opportunities by the lake. It is also an excellent starting point for mountain walks. Take the trip to Litlefjellet and enjoy fantastic views down the Romsdalen valley.

4: The Aursjø Road

A lovely trip on a toll road open in summer from Litjedalen in Sunndalen, past Aursjøen in the mountain and to Eikesdalen in Romsdal. A steep incline for cyclists, and not recommended for cars pulling caravans. RVs and cars are OK. The mountain has summer pasturage with a farm shop in Torbudalen, and the DNT cabin Aursjøhytta offers accommodation. Excellent fishing and mountain walks. Try swimming in the potholes by the road at Finnsetlia. A trip to Mardalsfossen waterfall in Eikesdalen is a must.

A lovely area between Sunndalsøra and Surnadal. Turn off from FV 670 by Kvanne and take FV 671 to Todalen where there are lots of things to do. One of these is Svinvik’s Arboretum with more than 500 different species of rhododendron. From Todalen take FV 323 to Kårvatn where you’ll find one of the entries to Trollheimen. Sleep over at the KårvatnTuristhytte and visit Kårvatn mountain equipment outlet in the barn. Kårvatn is the reference point for Europe’s purest air and water.

10: Tustna – Aure

From Kristiansund I recommend taking the ferry to Tømmervåg to discover Tustna, Ertvågsøya and Aure. Wonderful coastal landscape while driving through small hamlets, across bridges and along good narrow roads. At the county boundary between Møre og Romsdal and Sør-Trøndelag, FV364/310 there is a lovely vantage point at Brekka, with views across the Årvågsfjord. 4: Aursjøveien

– Long roundtrip Eidsvåg – Eikesdal – Sunndal – Eidsvåg ( ca 155 km) on both gravel and tarmac surfaces. Tough ascent up Finnsetlia. There is a dark tunnel, so bring a light, says Kurt Asle about Aursjøveien. The bicycle trip from Eikesdalen up Finnsetlia to Aursjøen is a real test of strength, but a very popular trip among cyclists. The road levels out near the Aursjø Dam. Here you will find Aursjøhytta (a DNT cabin), which is staffed during the summer season.

5: Innerdalen

– Start by the shop in Ålvundeid. A nice and easy ride on tarmac and gravel to the Innerdalshytta cabin, approx. 30 km in total, is how Kurt Asle describes this trip. Innerdal in Sunndal is referred to by man as Norway’s most beautiful mountain valley. Innerdal enjoys an east-to-west location in Sunndal, 10 km from Sunndalsøra, and is accessed via RV 70. Innerdal is the entryway to Trollheimen. Some steep sections.

app. 5 hours. Gravel road, small trail. Bjøråskardet provides the most beautiful views of any marked tourist route to the Innerdalen mountains. Far below is the Innerdalen with its lakes and pale-green meadows.
