Transforming Whyalla
What does ‘NextGen’ mean? NextGen is short for Next Generation and is ordinarily a term used to describe a solution that has been developed using the very latest technology on offer. Our Liberty NextGen Steel Plant will exist alongside our transformed 1.8mtpa operations and will provide us with a considerable advantage over our global competitors. FUTURE: GFG Alliance Chairman Sanjeev Gupta (middle) signs contracts with CISDI Chairman Xiao Xuewen (left) and Danieli Vice President Anna Danieli for $600 million worth of projects at the Whyalla Steelworks. Behind are Liberty Primary Steel Chief Operating Officer Theuns Victor, Danieli Vice President Georgio Ximeris, Premier Steven Marshall, Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and MCC Group President Zhang Mengxing.
Arguably the most important NextGen are those in our community. The decisions we make now are the ones that will stay with us for decades to come. The Transforming Whyalla Program is a journey we walk together with present and future generations.
Let’s celebrate the wins! Signed contracts worth more than A$600 million; with
Increased our steel production by 90,000 tonnes per year
◊ Danieli for a world leading rail and structural Heavy Section Mill
Modified our Combi-Caster
◊ CISDI Engineering Co, for a Pulverised Coal Injection Plant
◊ Dispatching a 1500 tonne trial batch of slabs to US market using new softreduction process
Established a world-class Transformation Project Team
◊ Opening up another export opportunity
◊ Ensuring the decisions that we make are the right ones
SIMEC Mining continues to handle 3rdparty cargo through the Whyalla Port
Announced visionary Liberty NextGen Mega Steel Plant
◊ Recently wind farm components for Senvion have been offloaded onto our wharf, ultimately bound for the Lincoln Gap project near Port Augusta
◊ Largest in Western World consisting of three new Blast Furnaces that feed three modern Converters; then into high productivity Slab Casters ◊ Capable of producing more than 10 million tonnes per year
New contractor partnership with Qube Bulk established into our operations; enabling:
◊ The Mill will consume local Iron Ore from SIMEC Mining and produce high-end slabs for further processing in aligned GFG Mills
Broadening of range of GFG and 3rdparty cargoes
◊ Best-in-class environmental performance
◊ Development of port into a worldscale, multi-user facility
What is next?
• •
Steel Increase our annual steel production volume from 1.2 million tonnes (mt) to 1.8mt per year. Produce high-quality, high-end steel through acquisition of state-of-the-art machinery to support our production target and increase our product range for export; by • Upgrading Basic Oxygen Steelmaking vessels • Purchasing additional machinery ◊ Vacuum Degasser Unit ◊ Ladle Furnace ◊ Beam Blank Caster Introduction of new power-generation equipment; reducing: • Reliance on the state and national electricity grids • Our carbon footprint Installation of a 35MW cogeneration plant powered by onsite waste gases and fuels; to • Free the operations from the grid • Become self-sufficient Progress contractual partnership for engineering study – Liberty NextGen Steel – capable of producing 10 million tonnes per year.
• • •
Mining Invest in Pellet Plant upgrades – replacing the cooler to improve efficiency, capacity and environmental outcomes Increase Iron ore reserves; through ◊ Ongoing exploration in the Middleback Ranges ◊ Exploration in the Braemar region in partnership with Havilah Resources Grow our business through strategic acquisitions Increase 3rd-party port usage Continue studies into various other opportunities e.g. Pumped Hydro, Copper Smelter etc.
Renewables SIMEC ZEN Energy plan to reach full development approvals for the Cultana Solar Farm and massive Li-ion playford Grid Battery - in Port Augusta - in the first half of 2019. Community • Keep our community ◊ Safe ◊ Consulted ◊ Engaged ◊ Informed • Add value to Whyalla; by ◊ Partnering with stakeholders and working together to achieve better outcomes
Our evolution Current operations will evolve into a modern, world class, sustainable facility. Producing an impressive 1.8mt of high-quality, high-end steel each year. The construction of new processing plants and upgrade of existing facilities will create a safer, more environmentally friendly and globally competitive facility. This forward thinking project features a number of key elements, each offering important benefits. These include a PCI Plant at the Blast Furnace, upgraded Steelmaking Facilities, a High-Tech Structural & Rail Heavy Section Mill and new power generation equipment.
This game changing project will be designed, built and commissioned over the next few years. Our Mining operations will also continue to grow and thrive through a number of key initiatives. Complimenting these advancements in the region, work has commenced on our US$1 billion, 1 Gigawatt renewable energy program in the Spencer Gulf, which includes the giant Cultana Solar Farm in Whyalla. This will improve the reliability and cost of electricity for our own operations while playing a key role in the broader markets transition towards renewables.
