contemporary Boheme STYLING & PHOTOGRAPHY TANYA COLLIER
After six years of pastel pink walls, Indigo’s bedroom was more than ready for a makeover... We set out to create a bohemian,
gypsy feel but also wanted to keep it fresh and contemporary. This was achieved by starting with a neutral backdrop of whites and creams, then gradually adding pops of colour and pattern through gorgeous handmade cushions and accessories.

apple and spice RECIPE & PHOTOGRAPHY LINDA VANDERMEER BUBBLE AND SWEET
Apples are back in season and while I like nothing better than eating a fresh crisp apple straight from the fruit bowl they are also super delicious baked into these yummy cupcakes. I have also included a simple recipe to make your own cinnamon sugar you can use to sprinkle onto the cupcakes. Of course you can buy it ready made if you like. As usual make sure you have all ingredients before you start baking and allow eggs, butter and cream cheese to come to room temperature. The cupcake and frosting recipe can easily be doubled.
Apple Spice Cupcakes
(makes 12 cupcakes)
1 cup self raising flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp all spice 125 g unsalted butter 1/2 cup caster sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar (lightly packed) 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 cup grated apple (1 large or 2 small apples) Preheat oven to 180 C and line a muffin tray with baking papers. Sift together the self raising flour, cinnamon and all spice. Pop aside until required. In a large bowl at medium low speed combine the butter and both sugars. Once combined increase speed to high and mix for a couple of minutes. tickletheimagination.com.au |
31
As the weather starts to cool down these fragrantly spiced cakes baking will fill your home with warmth and a spicy aroma that will make it hard to wait until they have cooled down enough to frost. Reduce speed to medium and add eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition until combined. Mix in vanilla. Reduce speed to low and add the flour, once combined add the apple and mix until it is evenly distributed (should only take a few seconds). Divide mixture evenly between the prepared baking papers in the muffin tray. Bake on the middle rack in the preheated oven for 15 - 18 minutes or until golden brown on the top and a skewer inserted comes out clean. Remove from oven allow to cool in muffin tray for 5 minutes then remove to wire tray to cool completely. Once cool use a knife to spread on a dollop of cream cheese frosting and sprinkle with a little cinnamon sugar. Can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Remove from fridge 30 minutes before serving.

Cinnamon Sugar
3 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 cup sugar Mix cinnamon and sugar together until well combined. Store in airtight containers until required.

dandelyne inspired WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SONIA LYNE | DANDELYNE
I remember when my love for embroidery, fabric and sewing began. I attended a small rural school of approx. 70 children. I was in year 2, and on a Friday afternoon the boys would head to the oval for “boy stuff” and the girls would head to the library for embroidery classes with Mrs Mulrooney. This makes me giggle now, but I do have the fondest memories of this time. I remember piercing the fabric with my needle and creating my very first running stitch. I was instantly taken by it. It was from this point that I began my love affair with all things stitchy and crafty. I also remember wanting to use my mum’s ‘special’ red handled fabric scissors and now I have my very own.
“
It’s been a journey of jobs and experiences that I have loved, to get me to where I am today.
”
Between this time and now I have been a Primary School teacher, Buying Assistant for accessories, Stylists assistant, Pattern Grader, worked with girls across Victoria presenting workshops on body-image, self- esteem and everything girl world entails, ran a business for children’s clothing, MUM, and lots of little jobs in between. It’s been a journey of jobs and experiences that I have loved, to get me to where I am today. Today and every day forward, I hope, will be Dandelyne inspired.

“
In three words I would describe my style as colourful, whimsical and sweet. My friends describe me as “kooky and bubbly” so I think this shines through my work too.
Dandelyne evolved from an embroidered/ appliquéd family portrait that I designed, and made, in July 2011. My husband and I wanted something a little different from your large, family photographic portrait. So I thought ... I should stitch us up (so to speak). I was so pleased with the result that I wanted to sew more. It was from this moment that I began sewing and playing with embroidery again. I felt 100% alive!
”
Initially I began sewing very simple, appliquéd pieces with little people and embroidered quotes like “Punch the air!” My ideas were blossoming and so was my desire to turn this little obsession into a business. So I began thinking about what I would call the business. Initially it was going to be SonShine but it just didn’t feel right. So, one day, staring at the large decal of a dandelion in our home and thinking about what it meant to make a dream/wish into a reality I headed off to school with my boys. As we walked to school, with a dear friend, her daughter picked up a dandelion and as she blew the parachutes, I turned to her, and as it cheesy as it sounds, it was. The sun split through the clouds and lit up her face. A very divine moment ... VOILA ... I literally screamed with glee and squealed, “That’s it .. DANDELION it is, with a twist ... adding our last name LYNE.’ Everyone got a fright as I squealed so loud with excitement. I then opened my Etsy store at the end of November 2011. I was ecstatic about this as I had promised myself to open a shop by the end of the year. And so Dandelyne began!

inspired by... I like to stitch about the little, but significant, things in life. These little, but really enormous, inspirations are my family, colour and the moments in life that make you truly happy. There are so many amazing people out there that I admire and who inspire me every day. Instagram is a continual source of inspiration, motivation and support. I adore my Instagram buddies. Pip Lincolne of Meet Me at Mikes is someone who I admire and respect. I feel that she has pioneered a comeback of craft for the 21st century via her blog and her work. For a long time I had always felt a little embarrassed of my love of all things crafty. I now embrace my craftiness and celebrate it to the nth degree. I also love the work of Takashii Wasaki. Her use of colour takes my breath away and her embroidery is particularly awe-inspiring. In my eyes she is 100% gasp worthy. Recently I came across the work of Carly Altree-Williams, a contemporary textile artist from Melbourne. I adore her recent work titled ‘Silently By Your Side’. I could go on and on but I would like to make final mention of my husband. He is a sculptor and I continually admire his passion and patience when it comes to his art.

tools of the trade... I cannot work without my embroidery hoops, embroidery floss and sharp needles. These are my 3 essential items. I am also a big supporter of double-sided tape so when I came across Vliesofix my world changed forever. It is double sided fuse for fabric … AWESOME stuff! My secret weapons are my miniature hoops. My husband originally made these, but as Dandelyne has significantly grown, we have had to outsource. We now have them laser cut in Melbourne. This change has meant that, very soon, the hoops will be available for sale. In the next few weeks everyone will be able to stitch up a little something special and frame it with their very own miniature embroidery hoop … YAY!
lessons learned... Time management, and utilisation of my time, has been an area of enormous learning for me. I have always been someone that creates extra work for myself. So over the years I have been learning to focus and manage on my time better. Trying to complete things that need to be done as opposed to things that will lead me to pointless distraction. Deep breaths and stepping back for a few moments are simple techniques that are enormously helpful. My husband and I really work well as a team, so we do try to juggle the family schedule together. It is not always easy (insert smile with clenched teeth). I love lists and Excel so this comes in very handy when I want to really get stuck into things. Stitching every day has made me a better sewer but I still feel I have a lot to learn and a long way to go … and I’m looking forward to every moment.

typical day...
other creative passions...
I am super lucky to have a 2 a half year old who loves his day time naps. After first having twins, I’ve been rewarded with a snoozer. Whilst he sleeps I am able to dive into my Dandelyne world for a couple of hours. I am a super organised person so I make sure, as best I can, that I utilise my time wisely.
Yes! Every since I can remember I have always made things. I remember mum heading off to work in the school holidays and leaving me with her sewing machine. Oh the joy! I would make clothes for my cabbage patch doll Fiona Crystal (I still remember her name – wow!). I would inspect my own clothes to see how they went together and then make mini patterns for her. I remember one Christmas I made white and orange polka dot ties for the boys and fabric covered
At the start of the week I create a WIP list and get everything ready to start sewing for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday is my construction and mail day. There is absolutely nothing set in concrete as I am often thrown curveballs, such as: sickness, appointments, having to have coffee with friends (hee hee) but I do my best to stay focused. Mornings and afternoons are no-sew zones. These are the times I do my best to be focused on my family.
photo frames for the girls. Very special indeed!
I absolutely love to make and create and I will give anything a go if time permits. I try to crochet and sew when I can but, I do find I tend to head back to the hoop. As a high-energy person I also love to run, and bounce on the trampoline with my boys. These two activities definitely help me to get outside and take a break.
My nights are often spent catching up on what I couldn’t get done in the day and making sure I stay on top of orders, emails and general tit-bits. My hubby is usually helping me to photograph my work at this time too. Because I am doing what I love, I do tend to sew quite a bit over the weekend. It really doesn’t feel like work so it’s easy to do.

If I’m questioning my work and where I am going, I use it as a positive influence to make changes, and challenge ideas.
favourite and least favourite things about owning a creative business The two things that I love about my business is the flexibility that it allows and the modelling I am providing for my/our boys. On every level this is so important for our family. We have made a choice, that may not be financially rewarding … yet … but allows us to show our boys it is important to do what you love and makes you feel alive, before anything else. Without a doubt there are times when I question if I should head back to teaching for a better income, but ultimately I wouldn’t be happy. My hubby and I have decided that there are numerous ways to dish up bolognese sauce. So, bolognese sauce as pasta, nacho’s, jacket potatoes, on rice, schnitzel style it is ^_^. To be 100% honest I do not feel that there is a negative, or least favourite thing about owning a creative business. One of my biggest life lessons has been that you always turn a negative into a positive. So if something arises that I’m not happy with, and it does happen often, I work out a way I can use it to work in my favour. If I can’t, I let it go.

”
favourite books & websites Without question I LOVE INSTAGRAM! For anyone running a creative business I feel it is such an amazing app/community for quick visual reference, inspiration, motivation and support. I also use Facebook as a medium to reach more people and share my work. Both Instagram and Facebook have been instrumental in Dandelyne moving forward. Blogs and websites I follow, and adore, include TED.com (awesomeness and then some), Create & Thrive (Jess Van Den), Meet Me At Mikes (Pip Lincolne), Martha Stewart (love her craftiness) and so many more. I have three embroidery books that do not leave my side. They are the “Mary Thomas’s Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches” (Hodder & Stoughton), “Stitch Dictionary by Lucinda Ganderton and Embroidery Stitches by Mary Webb.
future plans... Oh I love this question … I truly feel the possibilities are endless. My ultimate goal is to embroider the world. So between now and then Dandelyne, I hope, spins off on many tangents. In the near future I hope to start a blog that includes how-to videos for embroidery stitches and highlights, the many, amazing artists who embroider around the world. I would also love to create a book, Dandelyne style, of stitches and fun things to create, inspiring a whole new generation of stitchers. The idea of embroidering larger scale pieces and challenge my embroidery skills is also super attractive. I truly want to sew forever and my head is continually exploding with ideas, some good and some crazy, but I hope to continue learning and playing for a very long time.
secret to success... Love what you do! I feel it is so important to keep playing, exploring and trying new things until you find what it is that lights your internal fire. Every time I pierce the fabric I feel warm and fuzzy, inside and out. I know I am exactly where I am supposed to be because, if I have any spare time (ah hem … not very often) I want to sew. I am nearly 40 and have had 10+ career changes ... anything is possible. I also really, now, enjoy my times of self- doubt. These do tend to creep in often. I use it as fuel to make my fire burn brighter. If I’m questioning my work and where I am going, I use it as a positive influence to make changes, and challenge ideas. This passion I have for embroidery, I feel, needs negative and positive influences to grow. It is important to have a supportive network around you. A patient husband/partner comes in very handy, as does amazing friends and family.

Print the paper pattern sheet. Measure your door and cut a strip of paper the right length to fit the gap in the pattern, add on an extra 8cm. (example: my door measured 86cm wide my finished paper pattern was 94cm). Layer the fabric and pin the pattern sheet in place.
5
Pin the top and bottom of the snake together with right sides of the fabric touching. Using a sewing machine sew around the edges allowing for a 1cm seam allowance. Leave a gap half way down the body of around 12cm for turning and stuffing.
6
Turn your snake right side out, push out the seams and press. Stuff firmly with fabric scraps, make sure you cut them into small pieces to avoid lumps!
2 3

4
Name your snake and pop him in front of your door!
Cut out your fabric shapes.
Use the embroidery cotton to sew on the buttons, they don’t have to match, you could also try layering them for a different effect.
Position the tongue facing inwards towards the body and pin in place. This will stick out once the snake has been turned!

Pin the gap closed and stitch together firmly using small neat stitches.

outback wanderlust WORDS JENNY IVY & LIL, PHOTOGRAPHY JASON EDWARDS
meet Jenny... I have spent the last two decades working in the arts in various roles predominantly around project management, public art and place making. My own art practice fitted in where there was time and I painted for my own fulfilment. Then in 2010 while on a 6 month road trip around Australia with my husband I realised it was time to give my creativity a much stronger voice, and the idea for Ivy & Lil emerged. When we got home work on Ivy & Lil started immediately and in January 2012 went public with a debut product range, and online store.

tools of the trade...
“
I’m inspired when travelling in outback Australia where all the noise of life gets turned off and your thoughts are so much more pure and uninterrupted.
Being a printmaker I’m hooked on process! I’m a bit old school and predominantly work with hand cut stencils. Like most artists I employ a diversity of skills that have accumulated over the years through formal training and practical experience. I am very passionate about producing work using high quality materials sourced from Australian suppliers. I love grainy fabric and working with natural linen as a neutral backdrop to my colourful graphic designs.
other creative passions... I love to paint and have a series of large scale works that share a connection to the Ivy & Lil collection. Last winter a very good friend taught me to knit and we met up weekly for knitting sessions. It’s a completely different creative outlet which I love, due to its practicality, rhythm and portability.
favourite and least favourite things about owning a creative business... Being able to create and entirely shape something from ideas into products that resonate with people. I like the diversity of skills you need from being an ideas generator, maker, administrator, and promoter and to make all the creative and strategic decisions. The least favourite bit is being patient and that ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’ so accepting that things can go wrong from time to time is a reality.

inspired by... I’m inspired when travelling in outback Australia where all the noise of life gets turned off and your thoughts are so mu ch more pure and uninterrupted. I always com e back with a great list of what to do next and a clear sense of direction. I am comple tely moved by the work of the late Rosalie Ga scoigne and her ability to express artwork tha t is so totally Australian in its content, colour , materiality and scale. As well as being inspired by my peers including artists and makers wh o are well ahead of me in terms of their ran ges and brand awareness, I admire art ist collaboration Rowena Martinich and Geoffr ey Curran www.martinich.com.au for the ir energetic style, scale of work and use of bright colour. I am also a great fan of Little Da ndelion www.littledandelion.com/blog/ and the work of chunky knitter Jacqui Fink.

typical week Wow good question, it varies from week to week depending what I have on. I’m extremely fortunate to have my gorgeous studio at home in the back yard so have the luxury of working odd hours. I’m a morning person so happily get out there for a few hours in the morning from 6am (I know that’s freaky!). I work during the day in the studio when the natural light is good and do admin or computer based work in the evenings. When I go to see stockists or collect materials I plan a big round trip and make sure there’s time for scouting new places and a bit of inspiration gathering from favourite stores.

In order to be successful I believe that being prepared to work hard, stay in touch daily with new ideas and supportive people and have a good dose of selfbelief and confidence is essential.
secret of success? I think there are a lot of people out there, myself included, that are working to achieve success. Success means different things to different people, it’s a personal vision you have. In order to be successful I believe that being prepared to work hard, stay in touch daily with new ideas and supportive people and have a good dose of self-belief and confidence is essential.
future plans... Refinement and growth. New designs and colours are evolving all the time and I love the process of refining and expanding what I’m doing. I plan to grow the number of Ivy & Lil stockists and take part in Melbourne’s wonderful design market scene so I can get face to face with customers, design professionals supporters and other makers.

Start by creating a simple grid pattern on an A3 size document in your design software ( I used photoshop) Make sure the next steps are done in their own layers.
2 3
Select different shapes and colour them in using more than 3 different shades
Add some patterns ( I used some patterned scrapbooking paper that I had scanned)
4
Hide the original grid layer
5 6
Mix it up and try different background shades
Add textures and change the colour scheme (You could even skip the textures and print on textured paper) Make the original artwork smaller and create mirrored images
Print and hang on the wall!
To print I just went to my local printer and got it done on a heavyweight card stock and pinned it to the wall. You could get it put on a canvas or done on photographic paper too! tickletheimagination.com.au |

I also experimented with some hand drawn shapes that I scanned and uploaded to get a more organic feel. I added some cross stitch bling and some canvas texture for the finishing touches. If you don’t feel like doing it yourself...

you only live once... live beautifully
WORDS NESS LOCKYER | MARLEY & LOCKYER
Marley & Lockyer started from humble beginnings. While I was at home with our two little boys, in a new state away from my family, surviving on one wage, I had to re-think how I styled our ‘new’ old 1883 home while we renovated. Looking at homewares and the prices that came with mass produced pieces shocked me…so I turned to my creative roots and made my own. Family members and friends asked for pieces for their own homes and I took the plunge and listed a few pieces on Etsy. Marley & Lockyer had to conform to my time favoured saying “You only live once… live beautifully!!“…which is now the motto of the brand. I want people to be able to have gorgeous pieces made from ceramics and vintage linens that can be lived with everyday, thrown in the wash and be part of their life.
know…it works just fine. I did do Architecture, but found I loved rendering the buildings more than designing them! The name is a mix of my two names…Marley is my maiden name and Lockyer, my married name. Family is huge for me and this reflects that wonderfully.
I have always, right from a little girl, styled my surroundings. It is something I have always been able to do along with drawing/painting/molding etc. It’s part of my soul and totally raw and untaught - it’s just always been there. Art and design, especially interiors has always been my ‘thing’ and at school my Art master told my Mum after I won an award for excellence that I could “not be taught”. It was said in a good way, but everything the art teachers taught I done the opposite! I do what I tickletheimagination.com.au |

I don’t think I have a ‘style’. I love pieces that are classic, real, have a soul and beautiful. inspired by...
creative passions...
Tricia Foley and Nancy Fishelson have been my long time inspirations. Their sense of colour, form and texture just amazes me. Pairing new with vintage and keeping it all fresh, anchored by white and keeping it all homely is what I love about these two amazing Women.
I would love to one day be able to put enough time into a big artwork piece to go for something like the Glover Prize or the Archibald Prize. Art has always been something I have done and I just love it, but these days I just don’t get the time. The last time my work was in a gallery exhibition was in 2010. My other ‘job’ is being a Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor. I do this in the evenings and it’s a great headspace break from M&L. …but styling, designing and decorating remain my passion.
tools of the trade... Vintage linens from around the world feature heavily in my work and have become the signature of Marley & Lockyer. I use pieces that are over 100 years old for the ‘everyday’ linen texture on my tags, bowls, plates etc and also in my cushion range. Velvets and linen are now being paired with my porcelain buttons to give a touch of class to the fabrics. My ceramics are made with a snow white clay and I also love working with porcelain. Vintage embroideries from all over the world are featuring in my new ‘Embroidered Series’ and also in some of the jewellery pieces. The tools are just my trusty sewing machine, ceramic tools and homemade tools which suit the purpose of what I need….I make them up as I go.
66 | tickletheimagination.com.au
describe your style...
I don’t think I have a ‘style’. I love pieces that are classic, real, have a soul and beautiful. Basically I choose what I love and it has always worked well. Picture things like vintage linens, old pewter, blown glass, stoneware, old decorative silverware, candles, chunky throws, worn wood, white and wood floors covered in natural fibres, ticking, zinc, copper and shades of white, greys and linen. Greenery and grasses in vases and loads of hydrangeas. tickletheimagination.com.au |
67
secret of success...
Having an amazing support group around you. My Family are my rock and give me the thumbs up or down on things I am working on. Also treating your clients how you want to be treated as a customer is important. I talk to them like they are my friends. I don’t pretend to be important…I’m just living my dream!
68 | tickletheimagination.com.au
My blog will always be my number one love though…that’s where it all began... typical day...
favourite websites...
Ok, first thing that happens after the boys head off to school is a tidy up of the house…I can’t work if beds are unmade and dishes in the sink…just can’t.
Well, let me just say, my favourite websites list is long, but Father Rabbit, Supply Paper Co, Absolutely Beautiful Things and Tricia Foley’s pages all inspire me. The cleanness of how they market their products is wonderful. I adore Atlanta Bartletts books and Instagram keeps me inspired everyday.
Then it’s into the studio. I usually load up some music and check emails etc and then get stuck into what ever I have written on the blackboard the day before. I am a list writer and it helps me not stray onto something else…but sometimes I let that happen. I always make sure I have my lunch outside, away from my desk to just have a little break…it helps. Then back into to finish whatever I was working on, head to the post office to post orders, pick up the boys from school. Then the Marley & Lockyer day ends. I try not to let this creep into family time. Once dinner is sorted and my husband, Mic comes in from work, I go and teach either Bootcamp or Zumba, Boxing etc. Home to read with the boys and get them to bed, shower and then it’s on the sofa with Mic to chat about the day and update the blog and Facebook etc.
I love using social media, particularly Instagram and Facebook. I love being able to interact with customers of Marley & Lockyer. They are such an amazing support network and spur me on all the time. My blog will always be my number one love though…that’s where it all began. I recently changed the host site for this and my feed got muddled up along the way, but it is starting to get out there again and I am so pleased.
I have a certain day to wrap orders and upload the shop and this has been the best thing. I need a system to keep it all on track. Weekends are weekends and I don’t ‘work’ those days, except for maybe pack the kiln. You have to have structure it takes over.
lessons learned... Like I said above, having some structure and sticking to it has been huge. Networking with like minded people helps a lot too. Making a set day to do paperwork, instead of it all piling up is great too. Any new thing I do is a new skill…as I mostly just figure it out myself. Be confident in your work and know your product and market. tickletheimagination.com.au |

I am totally open to whatever the future has in stall…..I have a few ideas up my sleeve though. favourite and least favourite things about owning a creative business... Favourite- having creative control over my work is wonderful. Being the driving force behind it and taking it to new places is very exciting…also meeting customers at markets etc always gives me a buzz…it’s like we already know each other. Least favourite- when the Tasmanian weather doesn’t play along with the drying of the clay on time or when they come out of the kiln cracked… that’s annoying!
future plans... That’s a good one. I would love to be able to do more styling/interior work, but am happy to just let it all happen. I am totally open to whatever the future has in stall…..I have a few ideas up my sleeve though.

Just eighteen months old, Down That Little Lane has quickly established itself as the go-to destination for unique and made-to-order items Tessa’s role as owner and curator of Down That Little Lane is quite a contrast to her previous careers in modelling and personal training. “I started out in modelling when I was just 16, and it took me around the world. But when we moved to Australia in 1999 I found there wasn’t a lot of modelling work here, and so I retrained and moved into to massage therapy and personal training.” After starting a family, Tessa soon realised the early morning starts were not quite so fun anymore. With an eye for detail and a love of handmade, she set about finding something new. “I am always seeing holes in the market. I love unique and bespoke products and spent many hours on Etsy, but found it difficult to find Australian sellers and could never be sure of the quality. I saw an opportunity to create a carefully curated collection of sellers offering quality, bespoke products to an Australian audience.” After extensively researching the market, Tessa invited a select group of sellers to join her new community, and so Down That Little Lane began. tickletheimagination.com.au |

tessa’s top tip for designers and makers
“Carve a niche...find something that makes you different...that makes your product stand out from the crowd.” Just eighteen months on, and DTLL has landed firmly on it’s feet, establishing itself as the go-to online destination for unique and made-to-order items. It has quickly grown to support over 550 sellers and established a social media following of over 40,000 with half of that also subscribers . “I love supporting small sellers and helping them to grow their business, in fact I have found my role has expanded to that of ‘small business mentor’, offering advice on everything from best postage options to what colour options or designs work best” This year saw DTLL used on the television program ‘The Block’, which has helped to establish their brand as a household name. “It was an amazing experience, such a once in a lifetime dream for so many of our stores”

And what does the future hold?... “We are now really happy with the way the website performs as a shopping experience for our customers, so this year our focus is on working with sellers to build a community feel and help make stores work better for them. We have lots of exciting plans for the future, but for now they are all top secret”

about my creative space... I had this creative space custom built when my new kitchen was installed. It was our old formal dining room which had not been used since we had kids so I decided to turn it into a space of my own which is close enough to the action that I can keep an eye on the kids and kitchen but separate enough that everyday life can stop at the door. My main focus was on creating lots of storage, a sense of space and a clean finish. It’s very white and bright so I can easily redecorate by changing accessories such as the folders and china. Funnily enough I actually didn’t go out and buy things to decorate the room with, I just used items I have been purchasing that I like and they all seemed to pull together. As well as the drawers on either side of the desk, the bottom few shelves in each cupboard are pull out shelves which make accessing my baking supplies a dream. The upper shelves behind the solid doors are movable so I can store tall awkward equipment. There are a number of power points including some inside one of the cupboards that I use to charge electrical equipment.

about my creative space... From humble beginnings in a nook in our hallway, to a tiny corner of my girls playroom, I have now commandeered over half the playroom ... much to the girls dismay! After working out of plastic boxes & one rickety old bookcase for far too long, we delved into the world of ikea & gave our workroom a full make-over. Plastic boxes from kmart & dollar stores now contain all our treasures within arms reach, & our centre work table doubles as excess storage.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY AMY TA SEVENTH TREE SOAPS
meet amy.. I make natural, handmade, vegan soaps and balms. A couple of years ago I started getting a rash that would never go away. About a month before my wedding the rash had broken out severely and I went to the doctor and did some tests. He advised me to look into my wash products (i.e. laundry, dishwashing, body wash, hand wash) and start eliminating and replacing them. Once I started using cold processed soaps my rash has virtually disappeared. I started to make my own soaps and have enjoyed doing it ever since. My previous positions were as an administration assistant. I had become increasingly frustrated with what I was doing and decided to take the plunge and start my own small business. It was a risky move but has definitely paid off at the end.

Amy is a regular stallholder at East is East Boutique Markets in Kensington, Sydney.
inspired by.. I am inspired by books, music, movies and nature. Patti Smith, Fiona Apple, Alison Goldfrapp, Sofia Coppola and Anne of Green Gables are great sources of inspiration for me.
other creative passions.. I am an absolute foodie. I am a tour leader for I Ate My Way Through Cabramatta and I’m having so much fun talking to people about my childhood suburb and the Vietnamese cuisine.
tools of the trade I work with vegan only ingredients. The less we rely on animals the better it is for the future of our planet.
typical day My morning and afternoon usually consists of answering emails and preparing orders with a cup of coffee sitting next to me. My soapmaking is usually left for the evening. I am at my most creative at midnight, so most of my product ideas and scents are conjured up in the dark when no one is around and there isn’t any other sound besides my mind running away with itself.

lessons learned.. Dream big, believe in yourself and don’t do things in halves. No one believed my small business would take off the way it did, including me! But I stayed true to my dreams and ideals and made sure that I wasn’t being influenced by negativity and other peoples perception of what my products/business should be.

favourite websites & books I enjoy Facebook and instagram. I like the visual nature of their sites. One of the disadvantages of operating an online store is that customers can look like a number or an email. It’s fabulous to be able to connect with the customers and put a face to the name. I read Just Kids by Patti Smith a couple of months before I started my business. It helped me realise that you don’t need much to start somewhere. Just your soul and freedom.

favourite and least favourite things about owning a creative business.. I love that I can work from home. Princess Ladybird how one little
continues to make wishes come true
The creator behind inspiring hand-made local business Imogen’s Angels, Fiona Holmes, announced that for the second year she will be hosting Princess Ladybird Week commencing 24th April 2013 to raise funds for Make-A-WishŽ Australia.

100% of the profits go directly to Make-A-Wish® Australia
In 2010 Fiona’s daughter Imogen earned her soft feathery wings and joined the other angels after a courageous journey through illness. Known as the Princess Ladybird, Imogen was a loving, determined, smiley, loud, boisterous, happy, bossy character who was literally “louder than life” says mum Fiona. “While Imogen left us nearly 3 years ago, she is still very much with us and by creating Princess Ladybird I can help myself and my family to remain close and connected to her and at the same time we have a chance to give back to an organisation that helped Imogen to fulfil a wish of her own.” During the week of 24th April to 1st May each year, Fiona sells Princess Ladybird brooch pins to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Australia with 100% of the profits going directly to the foundation. This helps to support MakeA-Wish to grant wishes to other seriously-ill children and their families so that others can experience the magic that Fiona, her husband Jason, big brother Kody, little brother Ashton and Imogen were able to experience when they went to Queensland thanks to Make-A-Wish in 2009. Imogen lives on each and every day in the creative magic Fiona shares with her range of high quality products she hand-makes with love and sells through Imogen’s Angels.
For more information and to find out how you can purchase your own Princess Ladybird visit www.imogensangels.com.au
Imogen

storage bucket
TUTORIAL & PHOTOGRAPHY MEGAN PRICE ROBINTAIL
96 | tickletheimagination.com.au
A chic and unique way to store bibs and bobs, fabric buckets are perfect for the craft room and play area. Or even for product display on a market stall or serving some rustic savoury muffins in alongside a dab of butter...the options are endless! This nifty little style can serve a variety of purposes and the fact that it is easily machine washed and can be folded away in a cupboard for storing only adds to the versatility! This method is quick and easy and you will soon be whipping up families of buckets. The technique is simple and by altering the measurements, a variety of sizes can be made! The fabric bucket we are making today is sized at a cosy 18 by 22 centimetres.
getting started
you will need: + 1 fat quarter (~50x55cm) pretty cotton for the bucket + 1 fat eighth (~ 25x55cm)contrasting cotton for the top band + 1 fat quarter (~50x55cm) linen for
Pre-rinse then press your fabric with an iron before cutting to remove any wrinkles Cut fabric to size: • Cut 2 strips 25cm x 9.5cm for the top contrasting band • Cut 1 strip 25cm x 43cm for the bucket • Cut 1 strip 25cm x 46cm for the lining
the lining + 50cm crocheted lace + General sewing notions
note: A 1cm seam allowance is used throughout unless otherwise stated
(Interfacing is optional and will add stability. However, left without wadding, the bucket can fold away for easy storage)

bookshelf REVIEWS EMMA PERRY MY BOOK CORNER
As a self-confessed book lover, reader, hoarder, talker (urm, you get the picture right?!) ... I am more than delighted to be joining Tickle as Bookshelf Editor. This first edition illustrates beautifully my vision to bring you a myriad of books which stay oh so true to Tickle’s philosophy of celebrating Australian designers and makers. Here I’ve covered arts and crafts, garden design AND a beautiful first book for young children. Eclectic? Yes. Exciting? Most definitely.
Find & Keep Beci Orpin Hardie Grant Books ISBN: 9781742704555
The intriguing opening pages guide Orpin’s readers gently through her working space. It’s always fun to take a peak at how others work and organise themselves! Within the introductory pages Orpin takes us through the inspiration she discovers through a myriad of everyday shapes, colours, patterns and graphics with short yet informative paragraphs, all accompanied by stunning visual content. Find & Keep is neatly divided into three clear sections ‘Studio Projects’, ‘Home Projects’ and ‘Out & About Projects’. True to Beci’s aim, it is brimming with inspiration. The accessibility, and range of Orpin’s projects make this one a winner for me. Projects include drift wood wind chimes, a skateboard ramp, kites, embroidery and even a few picnic recipes tucked in at the end.
When Beci Orpin describes her book as ‘a little trip through my stream of creative consciousness’ on the opening page, I’m already falling just a little bit in love.
The personal style to her writing garners interest and excitement; Orpin’s instructions are clear and detailed without being dry or condescending. Towards the end are a useful set of templates, together with a page of cute stickers.
Find & Keep is a craft book from Melbourne based Beci Orpin. It’s an absorbing guide to tapping into your creative spirit.
This is a book for inspiring your creative energies, for projects which delight in the creative inspirations emanating from everyday items.

Urban Sanctuary Janine Mendel Hardie Grant Books ISBN: 9781742704173
Janine Mendel is an award winning landscape designer. Hailing from Western Australia, she has built a reputation for cutting edge designs. Her book, Urban Sanctuary, is focused on making the most of smaller gardens with her unique designs. Mendel’s strong architectural approach results in the ‘wow!’ factor as she uses geometry, style and texture to transform ‘modest rectangles of space’ into integrated areas. Her philosophy is to provide the impression of the house itself having ‘been ‘planted’ in the garden’. The breadth and variety covered in this book is commendable. Divided into two sections. ‘the gardens’ allows Mendel to showcase fourteen very different projects she has created. Each is accompanied by wonderful photography, and Mendel’s compelling discussion on integrating her designs with the aesthetics of the house, the needs of her clients ... and even the positioning of their interior furniture to create spaces which seamlessly integrate the indoors with the outdoors. Part two takes on ‘the elements’ where Mendel expands on seven key elements to creating a garden. She begins with geometry, firmly believing it is the foundation, ‘the very essence’ of a garden.
Animal ABC Maria Harding
Maria Harding is a Sydney based freelance graphic designer and illustrator, specialising in design for print. This is her first children’s book, and I fell head over heels in love with it. As you may have guessed, each page takes on a different letter of the alphabet paired with an animal beginning with that letter. This forms the springboard for a vibrant illustration and short alliterative sentence to accompany it. I loved the Wallaby resplendent in bright pink wellies, and that cheeky ‘upside down urchin’ definitely made me giggle! Harding’s illustrations are gorgeously warm and comforting, utilising an wonderful colour palette. ‘Owl in an orange tree’ demonstrates this beautifully with a wonderful blend of colours. Stylish and fun, Animal ABC would make a wonderful present. Animal ABC can be purchased directly from Maria Harding’s etsy store, here. a peek inside Animal ABC
This is not just a book to flick through as you admire the wonderfully created gardens, but also one from which you will soak up Mendel’s energy and passion through her words, advice and wisdom.
Emma Perry is a freelance writer, reviewer and founder of the popular My Book Corner, a children’s book review and price comparison website, (just enter the ISBN of any book into the search field). A Melbourne dwelling book lover, she can be found buried under a mountain of books.

the importance of designing and building
your online home WORDS ELLE ROBERTS AND ROBYN KYBERD STUDIO EXSTO
If you sell handmade or creative products it has never been easier to get yourself an Etsy shop, a MadeIt store, a Facebook page or Twitter account and be selling online it no time. Small businesses rely heavily on sites such as these as a means of reaching target markets and expanding our reach to new, potential customers. This reduces the barriers and investment of starting a business, which is a great thing. Keep in mind though, if you really want to take your business seriously, a Facebook account and an Etsy store just are not enough on their own. You need an online home of your own, and here are some of the reasons why:
1
it is all about the brand
Sure you have a great logo, a beautiful cover photo, and maybe you got professional product photos done. Unfortunately, on third-party sites not only is your logo and photos etc. masked by an ocean of other stunning logos, stores, products and photos, but most of what you see is the site’s own branding. Think “Facebook” and you instantly see blue in your mind. “Etsy” and you see orange! Your brand will never be more important than their own brand. On your own site your brand gets to play front and centre and you decide how you are going to be presented.
104 | tickletheimagination.com.au
Do you want your customer to remember to shop at your store – or on Etsy (where you are fiercely competing with hundreds of others similar businesses)?
2
who can find you – and for what?
Good luck trying to manage or master the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) on a Facebook or your Etsy store. If you are active enough your Facebook page can rank well in a Google search, but for what terms? Often it will be only your business name or your most popular post, which may not be relevant to what you do or sell. With your own website you have control over your SEO, over how the search engines will see you and the target keywords that will get people finding your business. If you have a strong presence on the various social network sites with links back to your website, Google will see those links and will improve your rankings.
3
playing by other people’s rules
Social media sites and other online stores or directories are always changing their rules, often making it tough for the little guys who don’t have the time to be researching the Terms and Conditions on a regular basis. This leaves many businesses facing a situation where their accounts can be instantly closed or cut-off due to breach of site usage, often never to be reopened.
Recently Facebook bought in a rule that limits the amount of text used in a cover photo or a sponsored photo to 20% of the total image size. If you don’t comply with this new rule, which you might not even know about, your page could be shut down without any warning. Which brings me to the next point.
When you have your own website you have much more control over the data you collect and keep. Sure your site can crash or be hacked, but the information people provide on your site is yours to keep, and can be restored or recovered.
5 great reasons for building an online home for your creative business
4
What happens when things go wrong?
Any social media site, e-newsletter platform, or other online business directory/ storefront that you are using could go belly up or shutdown tomorrow. Suddenly you have lost contact with all of your customers, sales records, contacts and followers. Or, perhaps you broke a rule (knowingly or not) and you get permanently locked out of your account or your page gets shut down. Your followers don’t receive a notification to say you are no longer there or where they can find you to buy your products. Their life goes on blissfully unaware of the occurrence. Meanwhile, you might have just lost access to your biggest customer base with no way of contacting them to explain or informing them how to contact or buy from you.
*
5
It looks more professional!
It is important to give your customers, potential customers and media, the opportunity to take you seriously. When you have dedicated time and effort to creating your own website as the core online home for you and your business – even just something small like your own domain name - your business comes across far more professional and customers get the impression that you are a business and you take that seriously. When magazine editors, bloggers etc. are sourcing content they may find you somewhere on social media, but chances are they will pass you by if you don’t have a beautiful online home they can send their readers too.
don’t be scared!
Starting your own website can be a daunting task, but it isn’t as hard or as expensive as you think. You can start simple and build on it as you learn more.
Creating an online home to showcase your talents and products can often be done for very little money and with limited technical knowledge required. With content management systems like Wordpress, Joomla and others, this too is becoming easier than ever before. tickletheimagination.com.au |
