Mr. Ridwan Kamil, an architect and a lecturer in Bandung Technology Institute (Institut Teknologi Bandung) was recently elected in 2013 as the Bandung city mayor. His background training in urban design provided him a unique approach of using urban planning, instead of mere policies, as the foundation for the city’s development. Ridwan Kamil took a special interest in the development of arts and culture in the city, especially to encourage community bonding.

ISSUE : Bandung is a small city in West Java, Indonesia, which is a thriving area for creative entrepreneurs. It is a place where innovation and artistry flourish. In Bandung where 60 percent of the population is below 40 years old, communities with many young creative and have opened businesses catering to the young market.In a creative city or space there is a sense of openness where people can think creatively and at the same time nurture distinctive identities.
It is a place where opportunities are grasped and problems are solved inventively. There is a lack of infrastructure in Bandung but it has become an artist’s haven. Bandung citizens have converted their homes into cafés and mini galleries, T-shirt shops are sprouting from garages at home and festivals are held in the streets because of a lack of an appropriate space and yet all these businesses are thriving. People flock to see what’s new in Bandung. Many young tallented creative in the city, coming together and establish some communities -BCCF (Bandung Creative City Forum) as a main based community-. BCCF has a goal to be able to provide benefits to society in general, especially the creative community in the city of Bandung. Public spaces for the community has become one of the efforts initiated by BCCF to increase the potential of the culture and creative economy in the city. Today’s, The existence of initiatives space and existing communities has a significant contribution in the culture development of the city. However, the fact that creative communities and initiatives spaces, which can survive is very slightly. This shows that sustainability of creative communities and initiatives spaces became a serious issue to response.
