• ‘Hula’ is a Hawaiian word meaning simply, ‘dance.’ Originally, only men were allowed to dance the hula. It originated as a method of passing history down, with every single movement carrying a meaning that helped tell the story. The movements were accompanied by drumming and chanting. (Modern hula is more commonly accompanied by ukeleles and guitars.) Hula dances also honored and appeased the gods in religious ceremonies (particularly the volcano gods) and paid homage to leaders. The hula was once outlawed by missionaries who considered it sinful. But David Kalakaua, King of Hawaii from 1874 through 1891, reinstated the tradition of hula dancing, thereby earning his nickname, the ‘Merrie Monarch.’ Each year, the Merrie Monarch Festival is held in his honor. The peak of the festival is the hula competition, with both men and women dancing. An authentic hula skirt requires the leaves of about 60 ti plants, takes about four hours to weave, and wears out in 3 to 5 days of use.

DANCING SHOWMANSHIP • In the 1800s people were fascinated with Native Americans, so P.T. Barnum imported a band of Sioux from Iowa to perform in his New York museum. He hired them to perform their ritualistic dances on stage in front of an audience. Their favorite was the war dance, but they performed it so convincingly that Barnum was afraid someone would get hurt. So he asked them to perform the more sedate wedding dance instead. They agreed, as long as Barnum agreed to provide a new red woolen blanket so the bridegroom would have a gift to give the bride’s father. Barnum agreed, since the blanket cost only $10 and his box-office receipts were very good. But then they informed him that he must buy a new wedding blanket for every performance. Since the show was performed twice a day, six days a week, Barnum was spending $120 a week on blankets. Soon the tribe got homesick for their native land. Barnum paid their passage back to Iowa. • In 1942, the impresarios for Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus decided they wanted to teach their circus elephants to dance. They contacted choreographer George Balanchine and told him to find a composer to help him. He chose Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, and the telephone conversation went like this: “I need you to compose a piece of music for me.” “What kind of music?” “A polka.” “For whom?” “Elephants.” “How old?” “Young!” “OK, if they are very young, I’ll do it!” The result was “Circus Polka” and it was performed 425 times. • Aristotle told the story of the city of Sybaris, where the horses were taught to dance to the music of a pipe. When the Sybarites went to war against the Crotonians, the Crotonians brought along a lot of pipes. On the battlefield, the pipers began to play, the Sybarian horses began to dance, and the riders were easily slaughtered.

Tools 4 life By DR. Jim coyle

You Are Good Enough

One of the many harsh labels we get in life is “you’re good but not good enough”. It’s like filling a balloon and then stabbing it with a needle and popping it. There was a young boy named David who was told that his whole life by his dad, brothers and others. His label sent him to the fields where he was isolated and instructed to care for the sheep while the others did their thing. In his loneliness he got very good at some things and started believing in himself. During a crisis he stepped up to the plate and took down a giant while others watched. His tool was a slingshot. In his isolation he practiced with all he had. You may not be the most gifted but the lesson here is to use what you have and do your best. YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH to remove the giants that are standing in front of you. Accept yourself, get up, and keep moving forward with all you have.

DANCE WORD ORIGINS • The old English word ‘jouk’ means to dance, and from that we get our juke box. • Thespis was a poet, dancer, and theatrical manager around 500 BC. He did so much to promote theater that he is still honored today in the word ‘thespian.’ • The word ‘carol’ comes from the Middle Open Year word Round! ‘carolen’ meaning to sing English joyously. That word originates with the Greek word ‘choraulein,’ which was a ring dance accompanied by flutes. • ‘Polak’ means Polish man, and ‘polka’ means Polish woman. In addition, the Czeck word ‘pulka’ means ‘half-step.’ When a new dance originating in Bohemia took the world by storm, it was called the Polka. The polka was very popular and many different items were named after the dance. When a new fabric was invented, the manufacturer decided to name the new design ‘polka dots.’ FAST FACTS ABOUT DANCE

DANCE ANTICS & ANECDOTES

• In France in 1960 a new disco opened up called Chez Régine. For weeks everyone who showed up at the door was turned away. A sign out front perpetually announced that the disco was full. Finally the sign was removed, and customers flooded in. It was an instant success. The ‘Disco Full’ sign was a gimmick designed to get people’s curiosity up. • In 1971 jazz composer Roger Kellaway wrote a modern ballet entitled mysteriously “PAMTGG.” Audiences soon realized the acronym stood for the TV commercial jingle, “Pan Am Makes the Going Great.” The entire ballet was based on airport life, including takeoff, landing, and baggage scramble. • Dancer Marie Guimard was famous for her style of dancing which mostly involved graceful movements of the arms as she struck poses. When a piece of falling scenery broke her arm, French opera singer Sohie Arnould remarked, “What a pity it wasn’t her leg; then it wouldn’t have interfered with her dancing!” • British ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn went to see a troupe of black ballet dancers. One of the male performers invited her to join him on stage and she gamely tried to keep up with the rhythm and movement of the vigorous dance as he guided her through the steps. He took her back to her seat saying, “You’re an attractive girl; it’s too bad you can’t dance!”

CANADIAN DANCE FACTS

• In Canada, the number of people who report earning a living from dance grew from less than 400 in 1971 to over 6,000 in 2001. • Over a million Canadian adults take dance classes or perform in their community.

The Ronneburg is one of the original restaurants in Amana Colonies opening its doors to the public in 1950. Still today, we offer many very authentic food items from the era of communal kitchens. We invite you to try our homemade potato dumplings, soups, tender oven baked steak, and of course our sweet and sour cooked kraut. Our kitchen is very proud to perfect wienerschitzel, one of The Ronneburg Restaurant best liked entrees. Seasoning is hand blended in our restaurant and this cutlet is then grilled to golden goodness. Come - try our famous tiny pickled beets and so well liked pickled ham. The Ronneburg Restaurant offers a very nice variety of German and American meals. Join us Friday nights for our famous catfish fry and always at the best price. The Ronneburg Restaurant proudly sponsors the Becky and Terry show, hosted almost every month, throughout the year. Great music and great fun! Ronneburg Restaurant offers various dining rooms to accommodate for small or large parties. Experience the ambiance of this historic landmark, please give us a call, we would be more than happy to help you plan your special event. Celebrate your anniversary, birthday, graduation, wedding rehearsal or company party with us. Remember - Ronneburg Restaurant gift cards make a wonderful well received gift for any occasion. To make a reservation call 319 - 622- 3641. We would like to thank all of our customers for their continued support. Sincerely, Yana, David and all of our staff.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel ● On Oct. 17, 1906, Wilhelm Voigt, a German shoemaker, impersonates an army officer and leads an entire squad of soldiers to help him steal 4,000 marks. Voigt humiliated the German army by exploiting their blind obedience to authority and getting them to assist in his audacious robbery. ● On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari is executed for espionage by a French firing squad. Her military trial was riddled with bias and circumstantial evidence, and it is probable that French authorities trumped her up as “the greatest woman spy of the century” as a distraction for the huge losses the French army was suffering. ● On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. Yeager’s X-1 rocket plane was lifted to an altitude of 25,000 feet by a B-29 aircraft and then released through the bomb bay. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

A-1 Home Healthcare Proudly Presents

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Medicare Advantage

More seniors are choosing the higher quality Medicare Advantage plans, according to a news release by Health and Human Services Department. Now, for the fourth year, that number is expected to increase. The average monthly premium is expected to go up just $1.64, which will bring it to $32.60 a month, with more than 99 percent of beneficiaries having access to a plan. Medicare Advantage plans often (but not always) include Part D prescription plans, as well as expanded health coverage that the original Medicare doesn’t cover. The Part D prescription-drug plan will be approximately $31 for the fourth year in a row. Open enrollment starts Oct. 15 and closes Dec. 7 for health and drug plans. Plans change from year to year, and so do individual needs. Take some time to research the plans to make sure you get what you need. If you need help picking out a plan, call 1-800-633-4227 for more information. Or you can go online and compare plans at www.cms.gov (click on Medicare) or at www.medicare.gov (click Sign Up/Change Plans). Remember: If you already have Medicare, you do not need to enroll in Obamacare. (Hang up on the scammers who call.) *** On Another Note: Have you had your flu shot this year? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu season could start as early as October. There are differences in vaccines this year. There are “trivalent” vaccines with three vaccines, “quadrivalent” vaccines with four types and a high-dose trivalent for seniors age 65 and older. Ask your doctor which you should have. There won’t be nearly as many doses of the quadrivalent vaccine available. The CDC website explains the differences in these vaccines, but doesn’t explain why there are two types this year. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

VIRGINIA McMATH

October 15th 2013

December 22– January 19

Feel like a psychiatrist? You will this week, as people lean on you left and right. Be sympathetic, but honest, Capricorn. It’s the only way to make a real difference.

January 20– February 18

Volunteer work brings satisfaction along with opportunity. Don’t miss out, Aquarius. Progress on a home improvement project wanes. Call in the pros.

February 19– March 20

Call it quits? Never, Pisces! You’ve got the goods to get the job done. Believe in yourself and your crew, and there is no way you’ll fail. A shopping jaunt uncovers a real find.

March 21– April 19

Anxiety on the rise? Not with you in charge, Aries. You know just what to say to alleviate concerns and keep everyone on task. A promotion could be in order.

April 20– May 20

Trusty Taurus. People look to you for assistance in good times and bad, and you do not disappoint. Many blessings are sure to follow.

May 21– June 21 Jeepers, Gemini. You’ve got everything you need and then some. Someone near and dear to your heart, on the other hand, does not.

June 22– July 22

Health issues plague a senior. Be supportive, Cancer, but don’t coddle them. They need to know the extent of the damage in order to get serious about the treatment.

July 23– August 22 Money woes ease with a windfall, and personal issues are resolved. Hooray, Leo. A shakeup at work proves beneficial to the bottom line.

August 23– September 22 Your managerial skills are requested for the planning of an event. Don’t say no, Virgo. Work it into your schedule, as it could lead to a more lucrative opportunity.

September 23– October 22

Hobbies are calling your name, Libra. You need a break, and you need one now. Grab that paintbrush or knitting needle, and put your frustrations to work.

October 23– November 21

Adopting the viewpoint of an acquaintance could prove troublesome. Do your own research and form your own opinion, Scorpio. A financial review turns out well.

November 22– December 21

Passion ignites with a gift, and the flames of romance burn bright. A newcomer gets the ball rolling on an account. Celebrate with a night on the town, Sagittarius.

• When Virginia Katherine McMath was born in Missouri in 1911, her young cousin had trouble pronouncing the name ‘Virginia,’ saying ‘Ginga’ instead, so Virginia became Ginger. Her mother divorced her father, and later married John Rogers, turning Virginia McMath into Ginger Rogers. Ginger’s mother was very actively involved in theater, writing Hollywood scripts for a living and touring with theatrical troupes, so Ginger grew up backstage. She got her first taste of the limelight when she won a Charleston dance contest, which allowed her to tour the Vaudeville circuit extensively. Her mother went along on the tour, acting as her manager. • Upon arriving in New York City, she landed a role in a Broadway play called “Top Speed,” and then immediately landed the leading role in the Gershwin play “Girl Crazy,” which made a star out of both herself and Ethyl Merman. One of the crew members hired to help with choreography was a young dancer named Fred Astaire. In 1930, Ginger signed a 7-year contract with Paramount Pictures. She was 19 years old. In the decades to come, she would make over 70 films.

• In 1933, she teamed up with Fred Astaire for the first time, making a film called “Flying Down to Rio” which turned out to be the first of ten films they made together. Although they played supporting characters in the film, their dance chemistry was so remarkable that audiences clamored for more. A string of feature films followed, including such hits as “Top Hat” and “The Gay Divorcee.” Although the two worked well together, they were never close off-stage. However, as Astaire later reflected, “All the girls I ever danced with thought they couldn’t do it, but of course they could. So they always cried. All except Ginger. No no, Ginger never cried.” • By the mid-1940s, Ginger Rogers was Hollywood’s highest paid performer. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1940 for her role in “Kitty Foyle.” In the 1942 film “The Major and the Minor,” she played the part of a woman who disguises herself as a 12-year-old. In the movie, her real mother played the role of her film mother. She starred with Ronald Reagan in the 1951 anti-Ku Klux Klan thriller, “Storm Warning.” • By the 1950s as her film popularity began to fade, she returned to the stage for long successful runs in plays such as “Hello, Dolly!” and “Mame.” Her final film was the 1965 biopic “Harlow” in which she played the mother of actress Jean Harlow. In 1985, she fulfilled a lifelong dream when she directed the off-Broadway musical “Babes in Arms.” She was 74 years old at the time. Along the way, she married and divorced five times but never had any children. Her autobiography, “Ginger: My Story” was published in 1991.

• Ginger Rogers died of a heart attack in 1995 at the age of 83. Her ashes, interred next to her mother’s, are in the same cemetery where Fred Astaire is buried. • Garson Kanin wrote of them, “The magic of Astaire and Rogers cannot be explained; it can only be felt. They created a style, a mood, a happening. They flirted, chased, courted, slid, caressed, hopped, skipped, jumped, bent, swayed, clasped, wafted, undulated, nestled, leapt, quivered, glided, spun - in sum, made love before our eyes. We have not seen their like since.”

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Garbage Disposal Unit Is Jammed

Q: I have a food disposer in the kitchen sink that came with the house. Yesterday while grinding up some food, it just stopped working. Does it need to be replaced? -- Carmen in Albuquerque, N.M.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● It was Albert Einstein who made the following sage observation: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ● Many people believe that one should never remove one’s wedding ring. However, one superstition holds that doing so is perfectly acceptable -- as long as the ring is being used to ward off a witch. ● There’s nothing surprising about the fact that upon the death of British novelist, poet and essayist D.H. Lawrence, the author’s body was cremated. What is unusual is that, at Lawrence’s request, his ashes were mixed into the plaster used to build the D.H. Lawrence Ranch in Questa, N.M. ● As Halloween approaches, if you live in New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Iowa, you might want to keep in mind your state’s tax policy. If you’re buying a pumpkin to carve into a jack-o’-lantern, you’ll need to pay tax on the gourd. Pumpkins used for food purposes, however, are subject to no such tax. *** Happy baking everyone, I imagine there will be many pumpkins this year being sold at the check out lines for pumpkin pies and pumpkin bread! A: Food disposers are very reliable appliances, but if they’re underpowered they may be prone to jamming or, when under a heavy load, will shut off. Turn the disposal switch on the wall to the on position. Do you hear a humming sound, but no grinding? Or do you hear no sound at all? If you hear a humming sound, it’s likely that the grinder is jammed. Turn the switch off, and then turn off power to the disposal at the main circuit panel. Now, open the sink cabinet and look underneath the disposer. You should see a reset button and possibly a small round hole or slot in the center of the unit. The slot is likely an access point for the impeller. It’s accessed with a small handheld wrench (like the Allen wrench that often comes with assemble-yourself furniture), which hopefully is stored on or near the unit. Insert the wrench into the impeller slot and turn it clockwise to try and unjam the unit. To see if it worked, turn power to the unit back on at the circuit panel. Then climb under the cabinet again, locate the reset button and push it. Go up to the power switch and turn it on. The grinder should operate again. What if you can’t locate a wrench or an access slot for the impeller? You could always try my mother’s favorite fix. Turn off power at the circuit panel, then grab something with a wooden handle, like a broomstick or plunger. Insert the handle into the disposal from the top, place it against one of the blades, and try to turn it clockwise. Then reset the unit as above and test. If neither method works, turn off power to the unit again and look inside the disposal to see if anything is blocking the blades, like a metal utensil or a large object like a bone or avocado seed. Carefully remove any such object and test again. And if all else fails, you may need to replace the entire unit. If so, look for one that has a motor with at least 1/2 horsepower, overload protection and a self-reverse feature to reduce jamming.
