FALL FACTS

by Kathy Wolfe Here in North America, autumn is defined as “the period between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice.” Learn more about this beautiful season and its events as Tidbits examines the month of October. • The first day of Autumn occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving south, either on September 22nd or September 23rd. On that day, the light and dark hours are exactly the same length, hence, the term “equinox.” Autumn ends with the winter solstice, December 21st or 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere. • The word “autumn” has its origins in the Old French word autompne. “October” takes its name from the Latin, meaning “eighth month.” Under the old Roman calendar, when March was the first month of the year, October was in fact the eighth month. • We all love to see the leaves change in the Fall. The bright foliage is a byproduct of chemical changes in a tree as it begins to go dormant for the colder weather. Leaves actually have just as much yellow pigment during July as they do in October. But in July, the darker green pigment, chlorophyll, masks the yellow xanthophyll. As sunlight decreases, a tree stops producing chlorophyll, and the other colors begin to show through. turn the page for more

FALL FACTs (continued): • When a period of unseasonably warm weather occurs in October, we call it Indian Summer. The nights are cool and may bring frost, but the days are sunny and clear with warm temperatures. The National Weather Service defines it as temps above 70 degrees F. following a hard frost. • The Peanuts comic strip debuted in seven newspapers in October, 1950. It grew in size until it was featured in more than 2,600 papers in 75 countries, translated into 21 languages. Running continuously until February, 2000, with a total of 17,897 strips in all, it’s considered the most popular and influential comic strip in history. • The month of October marked the premiere of several familiar television series “back in the day.” I Love Lucy aired for the first time in 1951. Captain Kangaroo and The Mickey Mouse Club debuted in 1955, and Leave It to Beaver came along two years later. Long-time favorite The Andy Griffith Show hit our TV screens in 1960. In more recent years, Saturday Night Live, now in its 38th season, premiered in October, 1975, with George Carlin as the first guest host. • It took 14 years of grueling labor to carve the busts of four U.S. Presidents into the granite hillside in South Dakota’s Black Hills. Begun in 1927 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, 60-ft. busts of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln were painstakingly created. The initial objective was to feature carvings from head to waist, but lack of funding abbreviated the project. The task was completed in October of 1941. Unfortunately, Borglum passed away in March of that year, but his son Lincoln brought the project to completion.

ConfliCt Resolution

“Pizza Style”

I love pizza especially when each slice has its own savory flavor. In a recent study of Proverbs 19:11-12, I took a bite of 12 of the best pieces of conflict resolution “pizza style”. I invite you take this combo supreme out of the oven and enjoy the ingredients that will help us all become better communicators in our struggles with conflict. Slice number ; 1) Walk away, 2) Spread Dew (a result of cooling in hot air), 3) Don’t be foolish and don’t look for an argument, 4) Seek understanding, 5) Be alert and sober minded, 6) Be disciplined in the Word, 7) Give, it takes your eyes off your own circumstances, 8) Draw the line and stick to it, 9) Don’t enable 10) Get Godly counsel, 11) Give your plans to God, and 12) Stay Loyal. Solomon has given us great advice. It is up to us to apply it.

FALL FACTS (continued): • Americans like to think that North America’s first Thanksgiving was in the 1620s in Plymouth, Massachusetts. But the Canadians had their first Thanksgiving in 1578, 42 years before the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower. English explorer Martin Frobisher landed in Newfoundland in 1578 and held a feast of thanks for his safe arrival in the New World. Canada declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1879, but its date changed several times before 1957, when it was officially declared to be the second Monday in October. • The Chinese thanksgiving celebration is known as the Moon Festival and frequently lands in October. It’s held on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese calendar, during the full moon, in gratitude for the harvest. This Chinese ritual has been observed since the Shang Dynasty, as early as 1200 B.C., and includes evening offerings to the moon, as the ancient Chinese believed the moon was source of rejuvenation. • In October of 1908, Henry Ford introduced his Model T to the nation. With a price of $825, over 10,000 were sold that first year. In 1912, the price dropped to $575, and sales skyrocketed. In the first 18 years of production, sales were upwards of 15 million. • The final piece of the St. Louis Arch was put into place in October, 1965. It marked the end of two-and-a-half years of construction at a cost of $13 million ($94.7 million in today’s money). The arch was built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States. Situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, at 630 feet, it’s the tallest man-made monument in America and the world’s tallest arch. If you’re interested in climbing to the top, prepare yourself for 1,076 steps.

FALL FACTS (continued): • Winston Churchill became the Prime Minister of Great Britain in October of 1951, but it wasn’t his first go-round in that office. He was first elected in 1940 and served through the critical World War II years. He was re-elected at age 77, and served another four years. Despite a severe speech impediment, he triumphed in politics, entering that domain at age 26. He’s the only British Prime Minister in history to have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1953), and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. • In October of 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. became the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. Just 35 years old, his efforts at combating racial inequality earned him the honor. He turned over his prize money of $54,123 for the furtherance of the civil rights movement. • The Beach Boys released “Good Vibrations” on October 10, 1966, and it quickly became the group’s third number one hit. (“I Get Around” and “Help Me, Rhonda” were the first two.) The single sold over 230,000 copies during the first four days after its released. Rolling Stone magazine lists the tune as Number Six on their list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” • Rowland Macy opened his “fancy dry goods” store in October, 1858 on New York’s Sixth Avenue. First-day sales totaled $11.08, about $293.47 in 2013 currency. Macy’s became the first department store to have an in-store Santa for the Christmas season in 1862. Today, Macy’s operates 798 locations across the United States. (2012 sales 26B)

● On Oct. 12, 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus reaches the New World. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world’s size. The expedition probably first landed at Watling Island in the Bahamas. Columbus later sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China. ● On Oct. 10, 1845, The United States Naval Academy opens in Annapolis, Md., with 50 midshipmen students and seven professors. Known as the Naval School until 1850, the curriculum included mathematics and navigation, gunnery and steam, chemistry, English, natural philosophy and French. ● On Oct. 8, 1871, flames spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary, igniting a two-day blaze that kills hundreds of people, destroys 17,450 buildings and leaves 100,000 homeless. Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

High-Tech Relief for Winter Blues Many of us don’t want to do too much outdoors during cold weather, but there are plenty of ways to stay busy. Hightech devices can come to the rescue! Here are a few ideas: --Learn a foreign language online. Check OpenCulture.com and look for courses developed by Yale or Carnegie Mellon. Look at www.bbc.co.uk/languages/ if you want to brush up on a language you already know. This one is very well done with videos. Do the lessons with a friend. --Learn how a new electronic gadget works. There are many to choose from. I’m surprised, as are those who know me, but I’m enjoying my Kindle, an e-reader. I’m a diehard book lover, but I’m running out of space for more shelves. The Kindle holds thousands of books, is easy to carry, the text is expandable to huge sizes if necessary, the battery lasts a long time, and on Amazon.com there are lots of free books to get started. To enjoy books on an electronic device, it doesn’t need to be a Kindle. Amazon has free apps (little software applications) for a number of e-reader devices, such as iPad and Android tablets. Check your local library, too, for free book lending on your e-reader. It might even have devices you can check out and sample. --If you have a Roku that streams programs to your television, you might have missed the hundreds of free channels available. Look in the channel store for Pub-D-Hub for vintage commercials, movies, cartoons and more. Check the Lecture Kings channel for course seminars from Yale University and Missouri State, as well as audio books of the classics. Sit in on recorded seminars on the MIT Open Courseware channel. Once you get started, you might even decide to try other high-tech toys! Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

Angling for a position, Aquarius? So are many others. In order to succeed, you will have to set yourself apart from the competition.

February 19– March 20

Some promises were meant to broken, Pisces. Go ahead and divulge what you know. Your friend needs to be aware of what is going on. A procedure is reworked.

March 21– April 19

June 22– July 22

You, Cancer, and only you have the answer. Look deep within. A run-in with a pal starts the walk down memory lane. Could a reunion be in store?

July 23– August 22 Fire up the grill, Leo. People are coming over. Be a gracious host, and you will be blessed in more ways than one. A late-night call settles a matter.

August 23– September 22 Finances shape up and family conflicts come to an end. Celebrate with loved ones, Virgo, in particular the apple of your eye. A book inspires change.

September 23– October 22

Music inspires you to reach out to a friend. Treat them with kid gloves, Aries. They have been through quite the ordeal. An e-mail offer is enticing.

Love has been put on the back burner for long enough. Focus on the people who matter most and work to strengthen your bonds with them, Libra.

April 20– May 20

October 23– November 21

Pretense is your best defense in a situation at home. Feign ignorance, Taurus, and others will follow suit. The mood will change before you know it, and calm will be restored.

May 21– June 21 Your credibility is called into question. Stand your ground, Gemini. A conflict continues to simmer at home. Someone you least expect comes to the rescue.

Mildred Ella Didrikson’s road to professional athlete fame began when she was 17 years old, when she read about the upcoming 1928 Olympics in her father’s newspaper. That day she made it her goal to one day compete in track and field at the Olympics. Let’s follow the journey of this talented and versatile athlete. • Mildred was a natural-born athlete, playing baseball with the neighborhood boys. Because she hit so many home runs, they gave her the nickname “Babe” after slugger Babe Ruth. There was hardly a sport in which she didn’t excel – baseball, basketball, diving, and track and field. After setting her Olympic goal, Babe practiced hurdles by jumping over hedges in her Texas neighborhood. • When the 1932 Olympics rolled around, the 21-year-old Babe qualified in five events. Unfortunately, at that time, women were only allowed to compete in three. In her three events, she took the gold medal for javelin and the 80-meter hurdles, both with new world records, and the silver for the high jump.

November 22– December 21

Uh-uh-uh, Sagittarius. You cannot sweep the issue under the rug. You must deal with it, and you must deal with it now. A youngster needs some advice.

• Although Babe was a fine Olympic athlete, as well as achieving All-American status in basketball, she’s probably best known for her achievements in the world of golf. She took up golf the year after her Olympic success, practicing eight to ten hours a day, hitting over a thousand balls daily. She entered ladies’ golf tournaments, but was soon judged a pro because she had given advertising endorsements, and was disqualified. At the time, there was no pro golf tour for women. She entered a particular men’s tournament in 1938, and was paired with a professional wrestler named George Zaharias. He became her husband 11 months later. • With the financial security George offered, Babe was able to give up endorsements and re-establish amateur status. In order to do so, she had to play no other sports for three years. Once she was an amateur again, she dominated golf with victory after victory. She won 17 straight women’s amateur tournaments, a feat yet to be equaled. She became the first American woman to win the British Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament. • In 1949, Babe became a founding member of the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association. She held the position of president of the organization from its second year through the remainder of her life.

You’ve placated a coworker long enough. Time to get real with them, Scorpio. They messed up, and the sooner you call them on it, the more progress you will make.

• By 1950, Babe Zaharias had won every golf title available. Her amateur and professional triumphs totaled 82 championships. Just three years later at age 42, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Three months after colostomy surgery, she was back, bravely wearing a colostomy bag on the course. And she continued to win tournaments! However, unbeknownst to Babe, the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Her final tournament was the 1955 Peach Blossom Open. The following year, cancer claimed her life at age 45. • Babe remains the only woman to qualify for the Los Angeles Open, a men’s tournament, in 1938. Sports Illustrated named her the Female Athlete of the 20th Century in individual sports. In 1975, a film based on her life was made, with actress Susan Clark in the lead role and former Detroit Lions football great Alex Karras in the role of George. The couple met during the production and were later married.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● One of the former Duchesses of Windsor, when asked to reveal the secret to a long and happy life, replied, “Fill what’s empty, empty what’s full and scratch where it itches.” ● You might be surprised to learn that Italians spend more time on social media than people of any other nationality. ● In medieval times in Great Britain, those accused of a crime could prove their innocence (or guilt) in trial by battle. This law was unused and nearly forgotten for centuries. Then, in 1817, a man named Abraham Thornton was charged with murder in the death of a young woman named Mary Ashford. The evidence against Thornton was nearly overwhelming, but he claimed the right to trial by battle against his accuser. Since the law was still on the books, the court decided it had no choice but to grant his request. Thornton’s accuser was William Ashford, the victim’s brother, but since he declined to appear on the field of battle, Thornton was freed. Shortly thereafter, trail by battle was officially abolished in the country. ● Cats can bark, too. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Vine Gets Tendrils Into Brick Columns

Q: The brick-lined columns outside my front door attracted some kind of climbing vine a few years ago that looks pretty embedded in the mortar. Can I remove the vines without damaging the brick or mortar? -- Carol in West Virginia A: Pulling the vines away from the brick surface might cause some of the mortar to be pulled away with them. The tendrils can be pretty tenacious. Instead, cut the vines away from the surface of the brick. Gather up the parts that fall away along with the remainder of the plant. Stems and tendrils that stay attached should be left alone until they’re completely dry and shriveled up, then scrub them away with a stiff bristled brush and soapy water. If some mortar crumbles away during this process, note the damaged area. This should be repaired as soon as possible after the brick is cleared of vines, using a process called tuckpointing. Tuckpointing can sound a bit complicated, but it’s really worth it to learn the process for small patch jobs. It can save you hundreds of dollars in masonry repairs and potentially thousands of dollars by protecting your house from water entering via the damaged mortar. Head to the home-improvement store. You’ll need to buy a concrete-fortified mortar mix (just enough for a smaller patch job), a mortar pigment to match the existing mortar color, a trowel and a jointing tool. If you don’t already have them, you also should get a hammer, masonry chisel and a stiff brush. Finally, ask for a grout bag. This is a cheaper alternative to common masonry tools like a joint filler and pointing tool. It works just like an icing bag used for cake decorating, only larger. Clean the damaged area with a stiff brush. If more mortar crumbles, don’t worry. You want to remove as much of the loose mortar as possible, to at least 1/4 inch deep. Mix up the mortar and pigment in a sturdy bucket, to the consistency given on the instructions on the bag (or until it just slides off the trowel). Fill the grout bag about half full of the mixture. Wipe the area to be repaired with a wet rag or wet brush. Cut off the pointed end of the grout bag and twist the wide end tightly. Pipe the mortar mix along the damaged area, getting as deep into the groove as you can. Smooth the newly piped-in joint with the jointing tool. Repeat the process, piping in mortar and smoothing down, until the new mortar is flush with the old mortar joint. Finish the job by brushing away excess mortar with a stiff bristle brush. Finally, let the repair area dry for several days. Unlike other types of repairs, you want to slow the drying time -- this allows the mortar to bond more securely to the brick and the older mortar. Either spritz with water a few times a day, or cover the area with damp rags for several days.

HOME TIP: Old paint drips or spills on brick can often be scrubbed away; newer paint can be cleaned off with a solution of trisodium phosphate and water.
