• In Baltimore, MD visit the Mount Vernon Museum of Incandescent Lighting.

Highlights (pun intended) include the largest bulb ever made, throwing out 50,000 watts. It was manufactured to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison’s discovery and could only be lit for 30 seconds at a time before overheating. It sits next to the smallest bulb ever made, which is the size of a pin point. Bulbs this tiny are still used in surgery and to inspect missile parts. The museum also boasts a cockpit bulb from the Enola Gay- the plane that dropped the bomb on Japan; a bulb from the Statue of Liberty’s original torch; and about 8,000 other lightbulbs of historical significance, including some of Edison’s early prototypes. What a bright idea!

• In North Canton, Ohio, visit the Hoover Historical Center and see over 100 different models of vacuums. There’s the 1956 Walk-on-Air model which was lifted on its own exhaust and floated behind the user, a selection of early models which weighed over 100 lbs, and the computerized French model which understands four languages.

FOOD & DRINK MUSUEMS • In Columbus, GA, the Lunch Box Museum is now rumored to be closed. When it was open, visitors could view 3,000 boxes and 2,000 thermoses. Regular tin lunch boxes pails used to be the norm until Walt Disney came out with a Mickey Mouse lunch box in the 1930s. In the 1950s lunch box mania swept the nation when Hopalong Cassidy was pictured on the front of a metal box with matching thermos. Over 600,000 sold in the first year and over 120 million lunch boxes of all sorts were purchased across the U.S. over the next two decades.

In 1987 steel lunch boxes were replaced with softer plastic models, reportedly after irate parents lobbied the Florida state legislature to ban metal boxes due to injuries sustained in cafeteria disputes when children used them as weapons.

• In Mount Horeb, WI, visit the Mustard Museum. Here they display over 3,800 different kinds of mustard, making it the world’s largest collection. Samples of 150 varieties are available for taste tests. Beware of the habañero mustard, described frankly by its manufacturer as the mustard from hell. Watch the “Mustard-piece Theater” video and read the newsletter The Proper Mustard which is billed as ‘yellow journalism at its best.’

There’s also a recipe book which includes the recipe called ‘Crude Person’s Mustard Delight’ which consists of alternating swigs of cheap beer with spoonfuls of mustard. No ketchup is allowed and in Openvisitors Year Round! fact must pass through a ketchup detector before entering. No mayo, either.

The museum sponsors National Mustard Day every August 5th. You can even see a modified Oscar Mayer Wienermobile now called the Lamborg Wienie.

• The Donner Party Museum in Truckee, California, memorializes the doomed pioneers who resorted to cannibalizing their dead while stranded in the mountains over the winter.

women in Alberta, Canada, were arrested for prostitution under the flimsiest of pretenses.

Several of their friends wanted to attend the trial, including Emily Murphy. However, they were turned away at the door to the courtroom because the judge said the testimony “was not fit for mixed company.” Emily went to the Attorney General of Alberta, arguing that the government needed to set up a court presided over by women in order to try other women.

He agreed with her, and to her surprise, appointed her as the magistrate.

• Unfortunately, when she showed up to her first day on the job, a lawyer for her first client dismissed her ruling because, under the law as defined by the British North America Act, only “qualified persons” were allowed to rule in court, and the lawyer said that “qualified persons” referred to men only, and not women, since “persons” elsewhere in the document were referred to as “he” and never “she.” Another portion of the law noted that, “Women are persons in matters of pains and penalties, but are not persons in matters of rights and privileges.”

• Emily took exception to this, and carried her case to court. In 1917, the Supreme Court of Alberta ruled that women were indeed “persons.” However, this ruling applied only to Alberta and not to the rest of Canada.

Emily Murphy decided to press the issue by applying as a candidate for Senator. The Prime Minister of Canada rejected her application, stating that Emily was not recognized as a “person” and only “qualified persons” were allowed to be appointed to political office.

• Half a million Canadians signed a petition asking for Emily to be appointed Senator, but the Prime Minister rejected the request.

• In 1927, Emily teamed up with four women’s rights activists, now known as the Famous Five, in order to take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada. They asked, “Does the word ‘persons’ in Section 24, of The British North America Act, 1867, include female persons?”

In 1928, the Supreme Court answered, “No.” The decision said that in 1867 when the law was written, women did not vote, run for office, or serve as elected officials, and because the British House of Lords did not have a woman member, Canada should not have women members in their Senate, either.

• Unwilling to accept that decision, the Famous Five appealed to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England, which was the highest court of appeal for Canada, in what became known as “The Persons Case.”

• In 1929, the Council announced their decision that, “Yes, women are persons… and may become Members of the Senate of Canada.”

The decision also said that “the exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours. And to those who would ask why the word ‘persons’ should include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?”

• A few months later, the Prime Minister appointed Cairine Wilson to the Canadian Senate. Many expected Emily Murphy to be appointed, but the Prime Minister was a Liberal and so was Cairine Wilson.

• Nearly 80 years later, the Senate voted to posthumously name the Famous Five Canada’s first “honorary senators” for their work on women’s rights.

• Today, 38 out of 105 Senate seats are held by women.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that affects a person during the same season each year. If you get depressed in the winter but feel much better in spring and summer, you may have SAD.

Anyone can get SAD

But it is more common in: • People who live in areas where winter days are very short or there are big changes in the amount of daylight in different seasons.

• Women.

• People between the ages of 15 and 55.

The risk of getting SAD for the first time goes down as you age.

• People who have a close relative with SAD.

What are the symptoms?

If you have SAD, you may: • Feel sad, grumpy, moody, or anxious.

• Lose interest in your usual activities.

• Eat more and crave carbohydrates, such as bread and pasta.

• Gain weight.

• Sleep more and feel drowsy during the daytime.

Symptoms come and go at about the same time each year. For most people with SAD, symptoms start in September or October and end in April or May.

Light Therapy, or Sun Therapy is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder by exposure to artificial light. Light boxes are designed to filter out most UV light, which can cause eye and skin damage. Light/sun therapy works well for most people with SAD, and it is easy to use – normally just 20 to 30 minutes a day. You may start to feel better within a week or so after you start light/sun therapy. But you need to stick with it and use it every day until the season changes. If you don't, your depression could come back.

During light/sun therapy, you sit or work near a device called a Sun Therapy box. The box gives off bright light that mimics natural outdoor light. The box should provide 10,000 LUX of illumination at a comfortable sitting distance. The light should be projected downward toward the eyes at an angle to minimize aversive visual glare.

While it is not required, speaking with your doctor about light/sun therapy is a good idea.

Some, but not all, insurances will allow you to file claims for light/sun therapy equipment with a proper prescription.

CR Community Concerts Delights Sold Out Crowd The Cedar Rapids Community Concert Association kicked off its 83rd season Sunday, October 13, with the Italian Saxophone Quartet playing to a sold out crowd at the Paramount Theatre.

A: It can be a little tricky to get a nice fire going in the fireplace if you’ve never done it before, and there are some safety tips you need to follow as well.

First, be certain the fireplace is safe to use. If it was inspected and cleaned when you moved in, you’re good to go; but if it hasn’t, or you don’t know when it was last inspected, contact a chimney cleaning service.

Make sure the area around the fireplace is safe: move furniture, rugs, boxes, paper and other flammable items several feet away. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher nearby, get one and place it in an accessible spot.

To light a fire, you’ll need several pieces of wood in various sizes, along with old newspaper or a firestarter stick. The small bundles of firewood sold in grocery stores and home-improvement stores are expensive, but they’ll do for a firsttime fire, as they’re medium-size and usually cut to fit most fireboxes. You should also go out for a walk and collect an armful of fallen, dry twigs and small branches.

With your fuel ready, it’s time to get started.

Open the fireplace damper fully -- this flap is located at the top of the firebox (the area in which the fire burns) and when opened allows air to flow up the chimney and outward. It’s probably the reason your house was filling with smoke when you tried to light a fire before.

Twist a half-sheet of newspaper into a cylinder.

Holding it inside the firebox, light one end.

Hold the burning end a few inches underneath damper for about 30 seconds or until you see smoke from the burning paper flowing freely upward into the chimney flue.

Stack your firewood prior to lighting the fire.

Opinions vary on how to build the stack, but it’s important to make sure air flows freely between the logs. I prefer stacking four smallto medium-sized logs in a square or triangular pattern. Tuck an assortment of twigs, shredded newspaper and small branches between and underneath the logs. Don’t go overboard -- the kindling can flare up too high when lit.

Carefully light the kindling, starting near the back of the log stack and working your way forward.

Once the initial flame has died down somewhat -- but before it disappears -- carefully feed in more twigs and branches. Properly seasoned logs should catch within a few minutes, but don’t be disappointed if you have to repeat the process.

Once a good fire is going, make sure the protective screen is in place. Remember to never leave a fire unattended. And once the fire is out, don’t remove the cinders until they are completely cold, and dispose of them in a fire-resistant container, away from the house or garage.

HOME TIP: Avoid burning pine logs in your fireplace. They can cause creosote, a sticky substance, to build up in the chimney more quickly, creating a fire hazard.
