• In Baltimore, MD visit the Mount Vernon Museum of Incandescent Lighting. Highlights (pun intended) include the largest bulb ever made, throwing out 50,000 watts. It was manufactured to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thomas Edison’s discovery and could only be lit for 30 seconds at a time before overheating. It sits next to the smallest bulb ever made, which is the size of a pin point. Bulbs this tiny are still used in surgery and to inspect missile parts. The museum also boasts a cockpit bulb from the Enola Gay- the plane that dropped the bomb on Japan; a bulb from the Statue of Liberty’s original torch; and about 8,000 other lightbulbs of historical significance, including some of Edison’s early prototypes. What a bright idea! • In North Canton, Ohio, visit the Hoover Historical Center and see over 100 different models of vacuums. There’s the 1956 Walk-on-Air model which was lifted on its own exhaust and floated behind the user, a selection of early models which weighed over 100 lbs, and the computerized French model which understands four languages.

• In Minneapolis visit the Museum of Questionable Devices where you can be cured of what ails you. Grow back your amputated body parts using radio waves. Cure skin ailments with electricity. Revitalize your blood using magnetic adhesive bandages. There’s a wealth of baldness cures right next to items designed to increase your height. Read about a man named Eben MacBurney Byers who, in the 1920s, believed the claims made by the Radnithor Corporation which said their product would increase virility. He consumed 1,400 half-ounce bottles of Radnithor, which consisted of distilled water laced with radioactive isotopes. He died of radium poisoning. • In Columbus, OH, visit the Optometry Museum. A local professor of optometry wrote letters to celebrities asking for the donation of their used glasses. On display here are John Denver’s granny glasses, engraved with the words “Rocky Mountain High;” race car driver Bobby Rahal’s spectacles, broken from a crash into a wall; Elvis’s sunglasses, worth an estimated $7,000; Mary Kay’s glasses which are, of course, pink; Joan Collin’s glasses with matching earrings; and former President Bush’s glasses which became warped while he was reading in the sauna.
NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMS
•In the town of Angier, North Carolina, visit the Gourd Museum. Here you will find gourds that have been made into dolls, lamps, musical instruments, toys, and more. There are antique gourds, gourds shaped like animals, gourds that are works of art, and gourds of religious significance. There’s a “gourdian” knot, a gold-embossed gourd dating to 1804, a gourd Ferris wheel, gourd puzzles, and a depiction of the Last Supper made out of gourd seeds

Who’s That Knocking at My Door?
Christmas and New Years are a time when we invite a lot of people into our house. We never know who is going to come knocking. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in… Revelation 3:20 What if Jesus knocked on my door. Would I invite him in? What do you think would happen when He crosses over the threshold? Joshua challenged his family and friends; ” 15 But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”Joshua 24:15 Next week we will look at some of the results of a Godly remodel.
Merry Christmas!!!

• In Goodlettsville, TN, visit the Museum of Beverage Containers which displays 8,500 different beer cans and 18,000 soda pop cans. There’s the 1935 Krueger’s Cream Ale can which was the first beer can ever made, and the Cliquot Club soda can which was the first pop can and came out in 1938. There’s Pussy Pop for cats and K-9 cola for dogs, and camouflage beer cans made by the U.S. military. There’s even political pop: during the 1964 presidential campaign, candidate Barry Goldwater produced Goldwater Soda and billed it as “the right drink for the conservative taste” while Lyndon B. Johnson countered with Johnson Juice and hawked it as “a drink for health care.”

FOOD & DRINK MUSUEMS • In Columbus, GA, the Lunch Box Museum is now rumored to be closed. When it was open, visitors could view 3,000 boxes and 2,000 thermoses. Regular tin lunch boxes pails used to be the norm until Walt Disney came out with a Mickey Mouse lunch box in the 1930s. In the 1950s lunch box mania swept the nation when Hopalong Cassidy was pictured on the front of a metal box with matching thermos. Over 600,000 sold in the first year and over 120 million lunch boxes of all sorts were purchased across the U.S. over the next two decades. In 1987 steel lunch boxes were replaced with softer plastic models, reportedly after irate parents lobbied the Florida state legislature to ban metal boxes due to injuries sustained in cafeteria disputes when children used them as weapons. • In Mount Horeb, WI, visit the Mustard Museum. Here they display over 3,800 different kinds of mustard, making it the world’s largest collection. Samples of 150 varieties are available for taste tests. Beware of the habañero mustard, described frankly by its manufacturer as the mustard from hell. Watch the “Mustard-piece Theater” video and read the newsletter The Proper Mustard which is billed as ‘yellow journalism at its best.’ There’s also a recipe book which includes the recipe called ‘Crude Person’s Mustard Delight’ which consists of alternating swigs of cheap beer with spoonfuls of mustard. No ketchup is allowed and in Openvisitors Year Round! fact must pass through a ketchup detector before entering. No mayo, either. The museum sponsors National Mustard Day every August 5th. You can even see a modified Oscar Mayer Wienermobile now called the Lamborg Wienie. • The Donner Party Museum in Truckee, California, memorializes the doomed pioneers who resorted to cannibalizing their dead while stranded in the mountains over the winter.

Women in History
EMILY MURPHY & THE FAMOUS FIVE
December 24th 2013
December 22– January 19
The New Year about to begin. Time to make some waves, Capricorn. Confront the situation head-on and make your stance clear. You are in the majority.
January 20– February 18
Pish-posh, Aquarius. Just because so-and-so says something is true does not mean it is. Pay them no heed. A transportation crisis comes to a conclusion.
February 19– March 20
Surely you can do better, Pisces. Step up to the plate and show your team what you are made of. An audit uncovers a way to save for a rainy day.
March 21– April 19
Vacation opportunities are hard to come by these days, Aries. Don’t pass up a friend’s invite. A tickle of the ivories sets the stage for a wonderful party.
April 20– May 20
Efficiency is of the essence, Taurus. Take care with your approach. An elderly pal could use some one-on-one time. A letter bears praise for an idea.
May 21– June 21 Look out, Gemini. A mystery at work is about to unravel. A change in protocol at home provides a welcome change of pace. A mentor drops by for a chat.
June 22– July 22
Ask and you shall receive. It really is that simple this week, Cancer. A small modification at home boosts spirits big time. A deadline is near.
July 23– August 22 Uh-huh, Leo. Flattery won’t get you where you need to this week. Hard work is key. Dig in deep. A foe turns friend. Celebrate with a night on the town.
August 23– September 22 Yes, indeed, Virgo. Trouble is most certainly brewing at home, but it does not involve you. Steer clear of the mess and focus on a long-suffering friend
September 23– October 22
Listless Libra. Cheer up. A project is on the way. Menu choices expand as the budget grows bigger. Time to get out the recipe books and get cooking.
October 23– November 21
Party plans begin to take shape with help from an old friend. Bravo, Scorpio! Reward them for their efforts with an invitation to some-place nice.
November 22– December 21
Small acts of kind-ness do wonders for a senior. Make it a habit, Sagittarius, and the relationship will blossom. The clutter bug sets in at home.
• It all started back in 1916, when several
women in Alberta, Canada, were arrested for prostitution under the flimsiest of pretenses. Several of their friends wanted to attend the trial, including Emily Murphy. However, they were turned away at the door to the courtroom because the judge said the testimony “was not fit for mixed company.” Emily went to the Attorney General of Alberta, arguing that the government needed to set up a court presided over by women in order to try other women. He agreed with her, and to her surprise, appointed her as the magistrate.
• Unfortunately, when she showed up to her first day on the job, a lawyer for her first client dismissed her ruling because, under the law as defined by the British North America Act, only “qualified persons” were allowed to rule in court, and the lawyer said that “qualified persons” referred to men only, and not women, since “persons” elsewhere in the document were referred to as “he” and never “she.” Another portion of the law noted that, “Women are persons in matters of pains and penalties, but are not persons in matters of rights and privileges.” • Emily took exception to this, and carried her case to court. In 1917, the Supreme Court of Alberta ruled that women were indeed “persons.” However, this ruling applied only to Alberta and not to the rest of Canada. Emily Murphy decided to press the issue by applying as a candidate for Senator. The Prime Minister of Canada rejected her application, stating that Emily was not recognized as a “person” and only “qualified persons” were allowed to be appointed to political office. • Half a million Canadians signed a petition asking for Emily to be appointed Senator, but the Prime Minister rejected the request. • In 1927, Emily teamed up with four women’s rights activists, now known as the Famous Five, in order to take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada. They asked, “Does the word ‘persons’ in Section 24, of The British North America Act, 1867, include female persons?” In 1928, the Supreme Court answered, “No.” The decision said that in 1867 when the law was written, women did not vote, run for office, or serve as elected officials, and because the British House of Lords did not have a woman member, Canada should not have women members in their Senate, either. • Unwilling to accept that decision, the Famous Five appealed to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England, which was the highest court of appeal for Canada, in what became known as “The Persons Case.” • In 1929, the Council announced their decision that, “Yes, women are persons… and may become Members of the Senate of Canada.” The decision also said that “the exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours. And to those who would ask why the word ‘persons’ should include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?” • A few months later, the Prime Minister appointed Cairine Wilson to the Canadian Senate. Many expected Emily Murphy to be appointed, but the Prime Minister was a Liberal and so was Cairine Wilson. • Nearly 80 years later, the Senate voted to posthumously name the Famous Five Canada’s first “honorary senators” for their work on women’s rights. • Today, 38 out of 105 Senate seats are held by women.

It's Winter! Do you get SAD?
Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that affects a person during the same season each year. If you get depressed in the winter but feel much better in spring and summer, you may have SAD.
Anyone can get SAD
But it is more common in: • People who live in areas where winter days are very short or there are big changes in the amount of daylight in different seasons. • Women. • People between the ages of 15 and 55. The risk of getting SAD for the first time goes down as you age. • People who have a close relative with SAD.
What are the symptoms?
If you have SAD, you may: • Feel sad, grumpy, moody, or anxious. • Lose interest in your usual activities. • Eat more and crave carbohydrates, such as bread and pasta. • Gain weight. • Sleep more and feel drowsy during the daytime. Symptoms come and go at about the same time each year. For most people with SAD, symptoms start in September or October and end in April or May.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Dec. 25, 1914, just after midnight on Christmas morning, German troops fighting in World War I cease firing their guns and artillery, and commence to sing Christmas carols. At points along the eastern and western fronts, Russian, French and British soldiers even heard brass bands joining the Germans in their joyous singing. • On Dec. 23, 1946, President Harry Truman appoints an amnesty board to review cases of conscientious objectors who were imprisoned after refusing to serve during World War II. Of the 15,000 violators of the World War II Selective Service Act, only 1,500 were considered entitled to full amnesty. ● On Dec. 24, 1972, comedian Bob Hope gives what he says is his final Christmas show to U.S. forces in Saigon. The show marked Hope’s ninth consecutive Christmas appearance in Vietnam. ) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Light Therapy, or Sun Therapy is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder by exposure to artificial light. Light boxes are designed to filter out most UV light, which can cause eye and skin damage. Light/sun therapy works well for most people with SAD, and it is easy to use – normally just 20 to 30 minutes a day. You may start to feel better within a week or so after you start light/sun therapy. But you need to stick with it and use it every day until the season changes. If you don't, your depression could come back. During light/sun therapy, you sit or work near a device called a Sun Therapy box. The box gives off bright light that mimics natural outdoor light. The box should provide 10,000 LUX of illumination at a comfortable sitting distance. The light should be projected downward toward the eyes at an angle to minimize aversive visual glare. While it is not required, speaking with your doctor about light/sun therapy is a good idea. Some, but not all, insurances will allow you to file claims for light/sun therapy equipment with a proper prescription. You don't want to let those cold winter months get you down again this year. Having SAD can often be easily treated by just bringing a little sunlight into your day!

CR Community Concerts Delights Sold Out Crowd The Cedar Rapids Community Concert Association kicked off its 83rd season Sunday, October 13, with the Italian Saxophone Quartet playing to a sold out crowd at the Paramount Theatre. “We are thrilled with the outstanding community support,” said Bruce Western, CRCCA president. “Our mission is to provide quality entertainment at a cost everyone can afford, and the community responded.” Members pay one low price for the season’s series of five concerts. This season, a member can attend all five concerts for just $40. And, as a bonus, attend the Metro Community Concerts five-performance series at Cedar Fall’s Gallagher-Bluedorn absolutely free.

For example, in the steamboat port of New Orleans, 20 steamboat arrivals in 1814 increased to a whopping 1,200 arrivals by 1834. • The steamboat era in the United States continued until the 1870s, when railroads started supplanting the steamboat as the preferred transporter of passengers and goods.
“We sold out quickly this year,” said Western. “We encourage everyone to keep an eye out for next season’s membership drive and order their memberships early.” But don’t despair. Lucky Tidbits readers still have a chance to attend one of this season’s exciting concerts. November 3 we celebrated the American West with the Sons of the Pioneers on. Fireplace Tips Q: This is our first year in a house that has a working fireplace, but we’ve never used one before. We’d like to have a crackling fire during holiday get-togethers and throughout the winter, but so far I can’t get one to light. I just get a lot of smoke in the room and no flame. Any tips? -- Dale C., Madison, Wis.
Why does Father Christmas go down the chimney? Because it soots him ! Q: Why did the girl put her bed in the fireplace? A: Because she wanted to sleep like a log.

A: It can be a little tricky to get a nice fire going in the fireplace if you’ve never done it before, and there are some safety tips you need to follow as well. First, be certain the fireplace is safe to use. If it was inspected and cleaned when you moved in, you’re good to go; but if it hasn’t, or you don’t know when it was last inspected, contact a chimney cleaning service. Make sure the area around the fireplace is safe: move furniture, rugs, boxes, paper and other flammable items several feet away. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher nearby, get one and place it in an accessible spot. To light a fire, you’ll need several pieces of wood in various sizes, along with old newspaper or a firestarter stick. The small bundles of firewood sold in grocery stores and home-improvement stores are expensive, but they’ll do for a firsttime fire, as they’re medium-size and usually cut to fit most fireboxes. You should also go out for a walk and collect an armful of fallen, dry twigs and small branches. With your fuel ready, it’s time to get started. Open the fireplace damper fully -- this flap is located at the top of the firebox (the area in which the fire burns) and when opened allows air to flow up the chimney and outward. It’s probably the reason your house was filling with smoke when you tried to light a fire before. Twist a half-sheet of newspaper into a cylinder. Holding it inside the firebox, light one end. Hold the burning end a few inches underneath damper for about 30 seconds or until you see smoke from the burning paper flowing freely upward into the chimney flue. Stack your firewood prior to lighting the fire. Opinions vary on how to build the stack, but it’s important to make sure air flows freely between the logs. I prefer stacking four smallto medium-sized logs in a square or triangular pattern. Tuck an assortment of twigs, shredded newspaper and small branches between and underneath the logs. Don’t go overboard -- the kindling can flare up too high when lit. Carefully light the kindling, starting near the back of the log stack and working your way forward. Once the initial flame has died down somewhat -- but before it disappears -- carefully feed in more twigs and branches. Properly seasoned logs should catch within a few minutes, but don’t be disappointed if you have to repeat the process. Once a good fire is going, make sure the protective screen is in place. Remember to never leave a fire unattended. And once the fire is out, don’t remove the cinders until they are completely cold, and dispose of them in a fire-resistant container, away from the house or garage. HOME TIP: Avoid burning pine logs in your fireplace. They can cause creosote, a sticky substance, to build up in the chimney more quickly, creating a fire hazard. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
• My personal holiday rule is simple: When in doubt, leave it out. There is so much to do, and we want to cover it all, but my best memories of holidays involve the people whom I spend time with, not the place setting or the exact perfect gift. -- Happy Holidays, JoAnn • “Commit to spending one or two unscheduled nights per week during holiday break just hanging out with your kids. You can enjoy the toys they might have gotten for Christmas, read, play games or just relax in each other’s company. They will return to school (and you to work) less stressed.” -- E.G. in Massachusetts • Try this chef’s trick for a juicy bird: After seasoning, cover the bird with cheesecloth or muslin secured with string. Baste over the cloth every 15 minutes. In the last 20 minutes, remove the cloth so that the skin can crisp. • P.S.G. from South Carolina writes: “For holiday gatherings that you host, delegate table tasks to your children that are age-appropriate: place setting, condiment delivery, refilling water glasses at scheduled intervals, etc. Children like to have a job, and they are better behaved when they have a focus and can make a contribution.” • Plan now for leftovers: Have small plastic containers and zip-top bags in case your guests or family would like to take some home. This is an especially smart thing to do if you are looking to eat healthier. Send Grandma home with a turkey plate and a big slice of chocolate cake! It’s better to share. • “Wondering what wine to serve at your party? Order a case of mixed wines. You might get a hit on your hands!” -- C.C. in Oregon Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver
● If you leave a cold glass on a table, it’s likely to leave a mark. The Italians (of course) have a word for that mark: cualacino. ● A poll conducted by Gallup determined that 42 percent of Americans believe that people are sometimes possessed by the devil. ● It was American author Erica Jong who made the following sage observation: “Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t.

D A Just before Christmas, there was an honest politician, a kind lawyer and Santa Claus travelling in a lift of a very posh hotel. Just before the doors opened they all noticed a $5 note lying on the floor. Which one picked it up? Santa of course, the other two don't exist!
