This week, Tidbits cracks open the geography books to study several points across the globe that begin with the letter “T”. • Nestled on the shores of Puget Sound, with a stunning view of nearby Mount Rainier, sits Tacoma, Washington, nicknamed the “City of Destiny.” In 1792, Captain George Vancouver became the first European to see Mount Rainier, originally called Mount Tahoma, from the Native American word for “mother of waters.” Vancouver named the peak for his friend Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. In 1911, Frank Mars and his wife Ethel began making and selling a variety of butter-cream candies from their Tacoma kitchen, a venture that would eventually become the Mars Candy Company, maker of the Milky Way. Another sweet treat, almond roca, also had its beginnings in Tacoma. • Florida’s state capital Tallahassee is the 128th largest city in the United States. Its name comes from an old Muskogean Indian word translated as “old fields.” The first European explorer to arrive there was Spaniard Hernando deSoto in 1539. Tallahassee became the capital in 1824, with a log cabin as the first Capitol Building. Out of Florida’s 497 verified species of birds, 372 of them can be seen in Tallahassee. turn the page for more!

• On the northwest shore of Lake Ontario lies Toronto, Canada’s largest city. The city takes its name from an Iroquois word meaning “place where trees stand in the water.” Toronto ranks high on the list of the world’s “most livable cities” based on quality of living. Its low crime rate also makes it one of the safest major cities in North America. The homicide rate there is about 3.3 per 100,000 people, compared with Atlanta, Georgia at 19.7. Covering an area of 243 sq. miles, Toronto has about 2.6 million residents, 49% of whom were born outside Canada. It’s obvious the city’s residents enjoy ice sports, as there are 52 outdoor ice skating rinks in the city.

• When Taipei 101 opened in 2004, this 101-floor skyscraper grabbed the title of world’s tallest building and remained so until 2010. It’s located in Taipei City, the largest city in Taiwan and capital of the Republic of China. The city was founded in the early 1700s and developed into an important overseas trade center over the next 100 years. It’s home to several ornate temples, including the Longshan Temple, constructed in 1738. In 1945, the temple was badly damaged when it was hit by American bombers who believed the Japanese were hiding armaments inside.
• Canada isn’t the only place where you’ll find Toronto. There are five U.S. states with a community by that name – Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, and South Dakota. • Five U.S. states and a Canadian province have also honored the Native American leader of the Shawnee by naming a community Tecumseh. Born in Ohio, Tecumseh (“Shooting Star” or “Panther Across the Sky”) grew up to be a key figure in the War of 1812. He is quoted with these words of wisdom: “Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.”

(continued): • Back in 1950, NBC radio was home to a popular radio quiz show known as Truth or Consequences. Looking for a creative way to celebrate the program’s tenth anniversary, the host Ralph Edwards announced that he would air the program from the first American town to rename itself after the show. Hot Springs, New Mexico jumped at the chance, and on March 31 of that year, the residents voted in favor of the switch, and the very next day, Ralph Edwards and the crew flew in for the anniversary broadcast. For the next 50 years, Edwards visited the town each May for their annual fiesta. Every April 1, Truth or Consequences, or “T or C” as the locals call it, celebrates Ralph Edwards Day. • A small Japanese fishing village named Edo founded around the year 1200 has grown to the world’s most populous metropolitan area with 8,949,447 residents. Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, when it became the imperial capital. Tokyo’s entire urban area has a population of 35,623,327. The city had already reached 1,000,000 people back in the 1720s. It’s not only the most populous city in the world, it’s also the most expensive, with the highest cost of living worldwide. • Texas is home to the towns of Telephone and Telegraph. Telephone, Texas was named because the only telephone in the area was in the community’s general store. About 210 people live there these days. Telegraph’s name was based on all the telegraph poles cut to build communication lines to the U.S. Army forts just east of town. Today, it’s pretty much a ghost town, population, 3.

Tools 4 life By DR. Jim coyle Loving People More Today than Yesterday
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Mark 12:30-31 Last week we learned about “Loving God.” This week we are focusing on loving others as we love ourselves. The message in Jesus’ words (love your neighbor) does not merely mean one who lives nearby, but anyone with whom one comes in contact with. If I lift my eyes up and extend my arms out I am replicating a cross: up loving God and out loving people. If I am connected to the cross vertically with my heart, soul, mind, and strength and
I am connected horizon-tally; there is a ripple effect of God’s love for me and others
The greatest difference we can make in this life is to “Love God and People More Today than Yesterday”

• If you like fireworks, you’ll love the city of Tondabayashi, Japan, home to the largest annual fireworks display in the world. Several displays are held every August, with the main display consisting of 120,000 shells fired in less than an hour. • The Native Americans gave Ten Sleep, Wyoming its unusual name. This Indian rest stop was 10 days’ travel, or “10 sleeps” from Fort Laramie to the southeast and Montana’s Indian Agency to the northwest. Today this little community boasts 260 residents. • Mahatma Gandhi called Thiruvananthapuram, India, that country’s “Evergreen City.” This ancient city has been a busy trade center since 1000 B.C. It is home to the temple of Vishnu, the richest temple in the world, with its monumental items and assets valued in the $15 billion range. • Edgar Rice Burroughs was 35, nearly broke, and selling pencil sharpeners when he wrote the first Tarzan book. Beginning in 1912, Burroughs published 26 novels about our favorite jungle hero. His success allowed him to purchase a 550-acre ranch north of Los Angeles, which he appropriately named Tarzana. Within in a few years, the city had grown to surround the ranch, and Burroughs sold off part of his property for new homesites. This small community, incorporated in 1917, is still known as Tarzana, California, with a population of around 35,000.

February 4th 2014
December 22– January 19
Congrats, Capricorn. You’re tested, and you pass with flying colors. A promise of long ago is kept. A small purchase gets the weekend off to a great start.
January 20– February 18
Excellent, Aquarius. You set a goal, devised a plan and stuck to it, and you will soon reap the rewards. A project finally gets the green light at work.
February 19– March 20
Imagine, Pisces. Time to do whatever you want. Don’t think it’s possible? Think again. You’re about to get a well-deserved break. Enjoy!
March 21– April 19
Ooh-la-la, Aries. Someone has their eye on you, and they are about to extend you an offer you can’t refuse. A youngster is much too inquisitive.
April 20– May 20
Whew, Taurus. You manage to dodge a bullet, a big bullet. Show your appreciation to those who helped. A trip down memory lane revives interest in a hobby.
May 21– June 21 Jump for joy, Gemini. You’ve got the magic touch this week. There is nothing you can’t do. A financial goal is met, and you can finally start investing.
June 22– July 22
Cool it, Cancer. You’ve said all that you need to. Actions speak louder than words anyway. A minor windfall paves the way for a major makeover.
July 23– August 22 Be careful, Leo. All is not as it appears to be. A mission in organization begins at home. Get all hands on deck. A text clues you in.
August 23– September 22 Easy, Virgo. Baby steps are the best route to success. A friend proves their dedication to a craft. Invite them out for a meal to celebrate.
September 23– October 22
The to-do list grows. You have two choices, Libra: to tackle it alone or take up a cantankerous friend’s offer to help. Weigh the pros and cons carefully.
October 23– November 21
Busy, busy, busy. You’re a busy little bee this week, Scorpio. Lucky for you, there will be very few obstacles in your path and many helping hands.
November 22– December 21
Passion ignites, and gifts are exchanged. Perhaps it’s time for a mini getaway, Sagittarius. A home improvement project nears completion.
It would be tough to find someone who hasn’t seen the face of Morley Safer on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Let’s trace his famous career back to his Canadian roots. • Toronto, Ontario, was home to an Austrian Jewish family, Max Safer, an upholsterer, and his wife Anna. In 1931, their son Morley was born. After Morley finished high school, he enrolled in the University of Western Ontario in London. At age 20, he landed his first job in journalism as a reporter for Woodstock, Ontario’s SentinelReview, and he dropped out of college. After a few other newspaper jobs, he was hired by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a correspondent. • Safer was an eminent war correspondent, beginning with the 1956 Egypt-Israel conflict. He joined CBS in 1964, and moved to Vietnam, where he opened the network’s news bureau in Saigon, where he would remain for two years. It was his report on a “search and destroy” mission to the village of Cam Ne that first alerted viewers to the traumatic conditions of the Vietnam War. President Lyndon Johnson reacted negatively to Safer’s report, calling the head of CBS to complain. Johnson ordered a security check done on Safer, certain that he was a communist. LBJ was informed that Safer “wasn’t a communist, just a Canadian.” • Safer moved to London, England in 1967 as the city’s bureau chief, holding the post for three years, while still covering the world’s conflicts. In fact, in 1968, he proposed to his future wife over the phone while reporting from Nigeria, where he was reporting on that country’s civil war. • In 1970, Safer received the job offer that has taken him to this day. CBS’ newsmagazine 60 Minutes was in its third season when Safer accepted the position. He is now in his 44th season on the program. While covering the news on the program, Safer branched out into writing, and became the author of a best-selling book in 1990, Flashbacks: On Returning to Vietnam. Twenty-five years after he left Vietnam, Safer returned in 1989 to film a report for 60 Minutes and ended up writing of his recollections as a war correspondent, as well as his observations of Vietnam then and now. • Safer’s 1983 investigative report on a wrongly-convicted armed robber sentenced to life in prison highlighted new evidence that led to Lenell Geter’s release from prison. Safer spent six months doing “the work the police didn’t do,” and contradicted their “proof” of Geter’s guilt. Within days of the broadcast, Geter was released. • Safer has expressed his opinion on today’s reality TV programming: “What have reality shows got to do with reality? It is beyond unreality; there is nothing real about it. Reality TV is sleazy, it is manipulative. It is as momentary as anything in popular culture.” • Safer is a 12-time Emmy Award winner, along with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and three George Foster Peabody Awards. During Safer’s tenure at 60 Minutes, the broadcast has been in the Top Ten highest-rated programs for 22 consecutive seasons. It’s the only program to finish first in three different decades. In October, 1881, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona, between the Clanton Gang and the Earp brothers, Virgil, Morgan, and Wyatt, aided by Doc Holliday. Three outlaws were killed in the gunfight, during which about 30 shots were fired in 30 seconds. The fight didn’t really take place in the O.K. Corral, but rather six doors west of the corral’s entrance.

● On Feb. 3, 1959, rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson are killed when their chartered plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff. Holly and his band, the Crickets, had just scored a No. 1 hit with “That’ll Be the Day.” ● On Feb. 7, 1964, Pan Am Yankee Clipper flight 101 from London Heathrow lands at New York’s Kennedy Airport -- and “Beatlemania” arrives. It was the first visit to the United States by the Beatles. The British rock-and-roll quartet had just scored its first No. 1 U.S. hit with “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
Since 2009, Medicare has been tracking the best and worst hospitals for kneeand-hip replacement surgeries. Both are generally considered to be elective surgeries. It has identified 95 hospitals where patients are likely to have problems afterward, and 97 hospitals where patients are likely to have a good recovery. While Medicare has been long tracked other markers -- such as death rates, heart attacks and patient ratings of hospitals -- this is the first time it’s followed knee and hip surgeries. Of the 95 hospitals with problems, there were nine that also had high complication and readmission rates. On the flip side, of the 97 hospitals with good patient recovery, 25 ranked as being “better” in both complications and readmissions. This new information has been added to the Hospital Compare site at medicare. gov, a welcome addition for patients who need to choose a hospital. Hospital Compare recently added ratings for hospitals with two types of infections, so clearly the site is continuing to grow. These ratings are going to matter to hospitals as well -- if found to have less than stellar rankings, Medicare pays the hospitals less. Later in 2014, the hip-and-knee replacement surgeries also will be counted when it comes to possible penalties. If you’re in line for hip- or kneereplacement surgery, you’ll not only want to pick your hospital, you’ll want pre-surgery advice. Most hospitals will refer you to a class on what to expect. Setting up your home environment, arranging for help, having a low bed ready, stocking up on food, moving things so you don’t have to reach high or bend low -- all of these, and more, can make for a faster recovery. Online, a good place to start is the “Knee Surgery Success” on Spryliving.com. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. • In 1802, at the urging of Robert Livingston, U.S. minister to France, Fulton turned his attention to steamboats. After two steamboat trials in France, one a failure and one a success, Fulton returned to America in 1806 and proceeded to build his famed steamboat the Clermont that successfully plied the Hudson River in New York. The Clermont’s first significant trip was from New York to Albany, a distance of approximately 150 miles. The Clermont left New York on August 17, 1807, and completed the voyage in 30 hours, including an overnight stop. • The first voyage by the Clermont was met by the public with suspicion. Many referred to the boat as “Fulton’s Folly” due to its unusually long length and the smoke and fire associated with the vessel’s newfangled steam engine. Many thought it would blow up or sink on its first voyage; they were wrong! In fact, because Fulton wisely paid attention to passenger comfort, the Clermont became a very profitable vessel for transporting passengers to destinations on the Hudson River. Fulton subsequently formed and led a company offering services on six major rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. • Following Fulton’s success, steamboats became a prime transporter of passengers and goods across the country. For example, in the steamboat port of New Orleans, 20 steamboat arrivals in 1814 increased to a whopping 1,200 arrivals by 1834. • The steamboat era in the United States continued until the 1870s, when railroads started supplanting the steamboat as the preferred transporter of passengers and goods.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver
● It was noted Irish author and wit Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” ● Immigrants arriving at New York’s Ellis Island in the early years (1892-1920s) were given bananas to eat. Many had never seen a banana and didn’t know how to eat one -- some ate the whole thing, peel and all. ●The name of the state of Iowa (unsurprisingly) comes from a Native American language. The original word, “ayuxba,” means “sleepy ones.” ● The very first CD of a musical recording was made in 1982. The album was “The Visitors” by Swedish pop superstars ABBA. Q: I’m thinking of switching from a traditional hot water heater to a tankless water heater. With three teenagers in the house, the current tank heater is just not adequate to keep hot water available. Will a tankless heater solve the problem? And which is better, an electric or gas heater? -- Sal in Southern California A: While I like the concept of tankless water heaters -- they provide hot water on demand, rather than storing water in a tank and keeping it warm -- it’s really important for homeowners to do their research before deciding to jump to this system. Electric tankless heaters, for example, look like a good deal up front. They cost about a third to one-half as much as gas tankless heaters. However, installation can be expensive: most electric heaters require a dedicated 30-amp circuit, meaning an electrician will have to come in to properly wire the house. In older homes, the installation can be pretty painful on the wallet. Gas tankless heaters cost more up front, but installation may not be as expensive. A qualified installer will need to set up the gas connection, and your gas system may need some modification. With either type, you still will have to deal with the problem of adequate hot-water supply. Placing high demand on the heater -- such as running a shower, the dishwasher and the hot water tap in a sink at the same time -- will make it more difficult for the unit to heat water to the correct temperature, meaning everybody starts getting tepid water. Homeowners I’ve spoken with who have tankless heaters are generally pretty happy with them. But they have experienced a few issues, such as not knowing they need to flush the heating system once per year (and more often in a hard-water environment). None complained about having inadequate hot water -- either they selected the rightsize system for their house, or they adjusted their water use to the rate at which the water gets heated. Because of the expense involved, find out how much water your family uses and track how much hot water is used during each day. Talk with the tankless heater dealer about the right system based on your needs, compare average annual costs (in electricity or gas) of the system compared to a traditional tank heater, and make sure you know up front what installation will entail and how much it will cost. HOME TIP: Tankless heaters can suffer from mineral scale buildup in the heat exchanger. Talk to the manufacturer about installing a flush valve so that you can flush out buildup annually and extend the life of the unit.

● Here is an ingenious way to store markers: Collect enough toilet paper rolls to fill a shoebox standing upright. Paint or decorate the outside of the shoebox with brightly colored paper or paints. Fill with the rolls. The markers stand upright in the toilet paper rolls and they are kept standing uniformly across the box. Much better than a messy bin, where you can’t see the colors that are on the bottom.
