This week, Tidbits cracks open the geography books to study several points across the globe that begin with the letter “T”. • Nestled on the shores of Puget Sound, with a stunning view of nearby Mount Rainier, sits Tacoma, Washington, nicknamed the “City of Destiny.” In 1792, Captain George Vancouver became the first European to see Mount Rainier, originally called Mount Tahoma, from the Native American word for “mother of waters.” Vancouver named the peak for his friend Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. In 1911, Frank Mars and his wife Ethel began making and selling a variety of butter-cream candies from their Tacoma kitchen, a venture that would eventually become the Mars Candy Company, maker of the Milky Way. Another sweet treat, almond roca, also had its beginnings in Tacoma. • Florida’s state capital Tallahassee is the 128th largest city in the United States. Its name comes from an old Muskogean Indian word translated as “old fields.” The first European explorer to arrive there was Spaniard Hernando deSoto in 1539. Tallahassee became the capital in 1824, with a log cabin as the first Capitol Building. Out of Florida’s 497 verified species of birds, 372 of them can be seen in Tallahassee. turn the page for more!

“T” TOWNS (continued):

• When Taipei 101 opened in 2004, this 101-floor skyscraper grabbed the title of world’s tallest building and remained so until 2010. It’s located in Taipei City, the largest city in Taiwan and capital of the Republic of China. The city was founded in the early 1700s and developed into an important overseas trade center over the next 100 years. It’s home to several ornate temples, including the Longshan Temple, constructed in 1738. In 1945, the temple was badly damaged when it was hit by American bombers who believed the Japanese were hiding armaments inside. • On the northwest shore of Lake Ontario lies Toronto, Canada’s largest city. The city takes its name from an Iroquois word meaning “place where trees stand in the water.” Toronto ranks high on the list of the world’s “most livable cities” based on quality of living. Its low crime rate also makes it one of the safest major cities in North America. The homicide rate there is about 3.3 per 100,000 people, compared with Atlanta, Georgia at 19.7. Covering an area of 243 sq. miles, Toronto has about 2.6 million residents, 49% of whom were born outside Canada. It’s obvious the city’s residents enjoy ice sports, as there are 52 outdoor ice skating rinks in the city. • Canada isn’t the only place where you’ll find Toronto. There are five U.S. states with a community by that name – Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, and South Dakota. • Five U.S. states and a Canadian province have also honored the Native American leader of the Shawnee by naming a community Tecumseh. Born in Ohio, Tecumseh (“Shooting Star” or “Panther Across the Sky”) grew up to be a key figure in the War of 1812. He is quoted with these words of wisdom: “Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.”

Topeka Kansas; The meaning of Topeka is unknown and unrecorded. It is believed to be from the languages of the Kansa and the Ioway.

“T” TOWNS (continued):

• Back in 1950, NBC radio was home to a popular radio quiz show known as Truth or Consequences. Looking for a creative way to celebrate the program’s tenth anniversary, the host Ralph Edwards announced that he would air the program from the first American town to rename itself after the show. Hot Springs, New Mexico jumped at the chance, and on March 31 of that year, the residents voted in favor of the switch, and the very next day, Ralph Edwards and the crew flew in for the anniversary broadcast. For the next 50 years, Edwards visited the town each May for their annual fiesta. Every April 1, Truth or Consequences, or “T or C” as the locals call it, celebrates Ralph Edwards Day. • A small Japanese fishing village named Edo founded around the year 1200 has grown to the world’s most populous metropolitan area with 8,949,447 residents. Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, when it became the imperial capital. Tokyo’s entire urban area has a population of 35,623,327. The city had already reached 1,000,000 people back in the 1720s. It’s not only the most populous city in the world, it’s also the most expensive, with the highest cost of living worldwide. • Texas is home to the towns of Telephone and Telegraph. Telephone, Texas was named because the only telephone in the area was in the community’s general store. About 210 people live there these days. Telegraph’s name was based on all the telegraph poles cut to build communication lines to the U.S. Army forts just east of town. Today, it’s pretty much a ghost town, population, 3.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● It was noted Irish author and wit Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” ●The very first CD of a musical recording was made in 1982. The album was “The Visitors” by Swedish pop superstars ABBA.

● Immigrants arriving at New York’s Ellis Island in the early years (1892-1920s) were given bananas to eat. Many had never seen a banana and didn’t know how to eat one -- some ate the whole thing, peel and all. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

● If you’re thinking about moving to another country, you might want to consider Finland. In that country, employees are offered, on average, 44 paid vacation days every year. Of course, you might want to consider that even in the warm southwestern part of the country, winters last about 100 days, with snow covering the ground from mid-October to early May. ● The name of the state of Iowa (unsurprisingly) comes from a Native American language. The original word, “ayuxba,” means “sleepy ones.” ● Early science-fiction author E.E. “Doc” Smith wasn’t just a writer; he also was an engineer. He’s the guy who figured out how to get powdered sugar to stick to doughnuts.

FAMOUS CANADIANS:

MORLEY SAFER

It would be tough to find someone who hasn’t seen the face of Morley Safer on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Let’s trace his famous career back to his Canadian roots. • Toronto, Ontario, was home to an Austrian Jewish family, Max Safer, an upholsterer, and his wife Anna. In 1931, their son Morley was born. After Morley finished high school, he enrolled in the University of Western Ontario in London. At age 20, he landed his first job in journalism as a reporter for Woodstock, Ontario’s Sentinel-Review, and he dropped out of college. After a few other newspaper jobs, he was hired by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a correspondent. • Safer was an eminent war correspondent, beginning with the 1956 Egypt-Israel conflict. He joined CBS in 1964, and moved to Vietnam, where he opened the network’s news bureau in Saigon, where he would remain for two years. It was his report on a “search and destroy” mission to the village of Cam Ne that first alerted viewers to the traumatic conditions of the Vietnam War. President Lyndon Johnson reacted negatively to Safer’s report, calling the head of CBS to complain. Johnson ordered a security check done on Safer, certain that he was a communist. LBJ was informed that Safer “wasn’t a communist, just a Canadian.” • Safer moved to London, England in 1967 as the city’s bureau chief, holding the post for three years, while still covering the world’s conflicts. In fact, in 1968, he proposed to his future wife over the phone while reporting from Nigeria, where he was reporting on that country’s civil war. • In 1970, Safer received the job offer that has taken him to this day. CBS’ newsmagazine 60 Minutes was in its third season when Safer accepted the position. He is now in his 44th season on the program. While covering the news on the program, Safer branched out into writing, and became the author of a best-selling book in 1990, Flashbacks: On Returning to Vietnam. Twenty-five years after he left Vietnam, Safer returned in 1989 to film a report for 60 Minutes and ended up writing of his recollections as a war correspondent, as well as his observations of Vietnam then and now. • Safer’s 1983 investigative report on a wrongly-convicted armed robber sentenced to life in prison highlighted new evidence that led to Lenell Geter’s release from prison. Safer spent six months doing “the work the police didn’t do,” and contradicted their “proof” of Geter’s guilt. Within days of the broadcast, Geter was released. • Safer has expressed his opinion on today’s reality TV programming: “What have reality shows got to do with reality? It is beyond unreality; there is nothing real about it. Reality TV is sleazy, it is manipulative. It is as momentary as anything in popular culture.” • Safer is a 12-time Emmy Award winner, along with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and three George Foster Peabody Awards. During Safer’s tenure at 60 Minutes, the broadcast has been in the Top Ten highest-rated programs for 22 consecutive seasons. It’s the only program to finish first in three different decades. Nielsen ratings tell us that 16 million people tune into the program every Sunday night.

TENDERNESS®

Loving People More Today than Yesterday

30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Mark 12:30-31 Last week we learned about “Loving God.” This week we are focusing on loving others as we love ourselves. The message in Jesus’ words (love your neighbor) does not merely mean one who lives nearby, but anyone with whom one comes in contact with. If I lift my eyes up and extend my arms out I am replicating a cross: up loving God and out loving people. If I am connected to the cross vertically with my heart, soul, mind, and strength and

I am connected horizon-tally; there is a ripple effect of God’s love for me and others

Since 2009, Medicare has been tracking the best and worst hospitals for kneeand-hip replacement surgeries. Both are generally considered to be elective surgeries. It has identified 95 hospitals where patients are likely to have problems afterward, and 97 hospitals where patients are likely to have a good recovery. While Medicare has been long tracked other markers -- such as death rates, heart attacks and patient ratings of hospitals -- this is the first time it’s followed knee and hip surgeries. Of the 95 hospitals with problems, there were nine that also had high complication and readmission rates. On the flip side, of the 97 hospitals with good patient recovery, 25 ranked as being “better” in both complications and readmissions. This new information has been added to the Hospital Compare site at medicare. gov, a welcome addition for patients who need to choose a hospital. Hospital Compare recently added ratings for hospitals with two types of infections, so clearly the site is continuing to grow. These ratings are going to matter to hospitals as well -- if found to have less than stellar rankings, Medicare pays the hospitals less. Later in 2014, the hipand-knee replacement surgeries also will be counted when it comes to possible penalties. If you’re in line for hip- or kneereplacement surgery, you’ll not only want to pick your hospital, you’ll want presurgery advice. Most hospitals will refer you to a class on what to expect. Setting up your home environment, arranging for help, having a low bed ready, stocking up on food, moving things so you don’t have to reach high or bend low -- all of these, and more, can make for a faster recovery. Online, a good place to start is the “Knee Surgery Success” on Spryliving.com. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.
