• Canadian Theodore Witte of Chilliwhack, BC, was pretty good at home repairs but he sure got tired of trying to smooth out putty around windows using a putty knife. One day in 1894, he was at the bakery, watching a baker put icing on a cake using a cake decorator’s gun to force the frosting into a smooth, controllable line. Why couldn’t putty be that easy? Witte went home and designed what he called a “puttying tool” that allowed putty to be applied in one continuous smooth seam. Unfortunately, the putty industry didn’t pay much attention and Witte never made much money from his invention, today known as the caulking gun.

• The word ‘smith’ comes from the Saxon word which means ‘to smite.’ In the olden days, a smith was anyone who worked with a hammer, whether he was hammering wood, metal, or stone. Thus there were blacksmiths, clocksmiths, coppersmiths, goldsmiths, gunsmiths, locksmiths, silversmiths, and so on. And since all these smiths needed a hammer, there were also hammersmiths. continued next page!!

• Henry, a businessman from Portland, Oregon, noted that sometimes screws and screwdrivers just didn’t work like they should. They were fine for home repairs and general carpentry, but there were problems when it came to assembly lines. In the 1930s, automobile manufacturers were screwing millions of screws per minute with power screwdrivers. With power tools, not only was it difficult to fit the screwdriver into the slot of a standard screw, but centrifugal force tended to force the screwdriver to slide out of the slot. Once the standard screw was screwed in all the way, the power screwdriver continued to spin, which either stripped the screw, stalled the screwdriver, or damaged the part. • Henry invented a screw with a crossshaped slot that could be driven with more torque and would hold tighter than regular slotted screws. He named it after himself. His new screwdriver, with its pointed tip, engaged the screw much more easily and did not slip out. The indentation in the screw was so shallow that when the screw was finished screwing, the screwdriver tip simply popped out. • The new screw was first used in building the 1936 Cadillac and proved so effective that within two years all car manufacturers had switched. In 1936 Henry received patents for both the screw and the screwdriver, but it was so widely copied that he lost the patent in 1949. Henry died in 1958 at age 68 after seeing his screw- named after his last name- become an industry standard. What was his name? (answer at bottom of this column)
BLACK & DECKER
• In 1910, Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker set up a small machine shop in Baltimore. In 1917 they invented a portable handheld drill which led to them becoming one of the most successful tool companies in the U.S. Henry Phillips invented the Phillips screwdriver.

Tools 4 life By DR. Jim coyle
Makin it Real
Death Valley, the hottest place on the west coast, is a desert floor that provides false hope and life in the form of a mirage. The more intense the heat gets the more beautiful the mirage becomes. People today are chasing and putting their faith in false securities turning over every rock along the way to try to find the secret. Some seek it through money and success, others pursue it in pleasure and success, The Apostle John (1 John 1:1-7) unwraps 4 guidelines that provide hope and purpose in “Makin it Real” The first is to secure the right foundation, the Word of Life. The second is to surround yourself with the right companions, having fellowship with one another. The third is to have the right source, God is light and there is no darkness. And the fourth is to have the right goal, to walk in the Light as He is in the light. So here is the ground work for “Makin it Real”: the right foundation, the right companions, the right source, and the right goal. How real is your life?

• Russian immigrant Akiba Horowitz changed his name to Conrad Hubert when he came to America in 1891. He was fascinated by the invention of electricity. Hubert began to tinker. He invented a number of electrical novelties, such as a portable fan and an illuminated flower pot. He named his business the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company. • Then he hired an inventor name David Misell, who had invented the bicycle light. While working for Hubert, Misell invented the flashlight, assigning the patent to Hubert. It was called the flashlight because at first it would only light up for a moment or two before going out. Hubert tinkered with the invention, improved it, patented it in 1903, and handed out samples to New York City cops, who gave him rave reviews. Within a few years Hubert was a millionaire. • In 1914 the National Carbon Company (which supplied Hubert with his materials) bought half interest in the company, and the name of the firm was changed. Production of the batteries used in flashlights overtook production of flashlights. During the Great Depression, advertisements for the company consistently depicted a child, a pet, and a flashlight in various Norman Rockwell-like situations. One such ad showed a young girl checking on a litter of nine kittens using her flashlight. This image became so popular that thousands of posters were sold, giving the company a new icon: a cat with nine lives. What is the name of the company? (Answer at bottom of this column.)

Famous Canadians
NORMAN BREAKEY
• Norman James Breakey was born February 25th, 1891 in Pierson, Manitoba. Around 1940, he came up with an idea that would make painting large areas much easier. • At the time, the standard paint brush was the only method available, and the labor was difficult: “Take a paint brush in your right hand, or your left hand if you are left handed, or both hands if it is a big brush. Dip the brush into a can of paint and raise it above your head, being careful not to let the paint roll down your arm. Dab it on the ceiling, repeat the process hundreds of times. Then—take a bath.” Norman Breakey devised a cylinder covered in fabric that picked up more paint than a brush. It was the pre-curser to the modern paint roller. • Breakey approached Tom Hamilton, an executive for A.B. Caya Fabrics, for advice on what type of fabric to use to cover his roller. Years later, Hamilton recalled: “He wanted my opinion on the best kind of fabric that offered a stiff bristly nap. I asked for what purpose, and he said ‘For rolling paint.’ I scratched my head at that but he resolutely went on and described to me something with a handle shaped like a ‘7’ that would hold a cardboard, fabric-covered cylinder. ‘If my theory is right this thing will revolutionize painting in Canada,’ he said. Well, the best thing I could think of was that bristly green mohair velour that was used to cover railway touring coaches in those days. So I sold him a bolt of that, told him how to cut it on the bias, suggested some glues and away he went, beaming out the door. Later he came by and thanked me for my advice. He gave me one of his original rollers and a tray that had been hammered out by a local tinsmith. Neither of us knew then how big his invention would get to be.” • Unfortunately, Breakey lacked the money to produce a significant supply of rollers on his own. Attempts to persuade investors to back him failed. Meanwhile, people started tinkering with the design, altering it just enough to that they were able to apply for their own patents. • When hogs’ hair bristles became scarce during World War II, an inventor named Richard Croxton Adams working for Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland, Ohio, made a paint roller called a “Roller-Koater” that did not use bristles. Adams became the first U.S. patent holder for a paint roller. • At least one account claims Breakey died poor and unknown not long after he came up with his invention. He went without public notice until 1967, when he was listed in both the inventors volume of McClelland & Stewart’s Canadian Centennial Library and a Maclean’s feature called “Who’s Who of Canadian What’s His Names.” Breakey may have been under-heralded in life, but his work has aided generations of painters. • Here are some tips for the next time you use one of Norman Breakey’s rollers: Use a lint roller on your paint roller to get loose bits of fuzz off it prior to painting. Use a Swiffer on your walls to collect dust before painting. Line your paint tray with a plastic bag so you won’t have to clean it, then put the paint tray inside a cardboard box tray, such as the ones that come underneath a flat of water bottles. Paint large surfaces using a pattern of large ‘Ws’ across the wall, back and forth. Cover places like hinges and door knobs with Vasoline to prevent paint from sticking. If the painter’s tape won’t peel, put it in a microwave for 10 seconds. Alcohol wipes such as those found in first aid kits will wipe up paint drips, and Q-tips will touch up tiny spots. Store the paint roller in a Ziploc baggie in a Pringles can to keep it fresh over night.

January 20– February 18 A confrontation sends the rumor mill into high gear. Don’t add fuel to the fire. Do whatever you must to maintain your neutral-ity, Aquarius. Someone is watching.
July 23– August 22 Idle chatter makes the chores go faster this week. Join in the fun, Leo. Travel plans shape up with news of a solid financial report. A mission is accom-plished.

Painters in a town in Wisconsin were painting the word “elevator” on the town”s grain elevator. Winter closed in when they were half way through, and only “Eleva” was painted there. By the time spring came, half the state thought the name of the town was Eleva. Eleva it remains today.
Could your experience of the 2008 floods help someone else?
An Iowa doctoral student is seeking study participants for her dissertation regarding "Secondary-Direct" victims of the floods. She has defined a Secondary-Direct victim as anyone who directly experienced the disaster in the moment it occurred but ends up, by chance or luck, to not be a primary victim after the fact because they were not seriously injured, did not have major property damage, and did not lose a close loved one in the event. Participation in the study would involve 5-8, Total, hours of face-to-face interviews regarding your experience of the flood and how it seemed to affect your life in the first days, weeks, months, and year after the event, as well as--briefly-how it might have impacted your life in the years since. All information collected would be confidential and all interviews would occur in private, public locations within your area. So, if you were at least age 18 at the time of the flood, feel you meet the description of the secondarydirect victim, and you are interested in sharing your story, please contact Sydni Grauberger at: (641) 751-9147 or sgrauberger@capellauniversity.edu.

5-Minute Daily Run?! I wonder about some of these studies. A new one out claims that if we run five minutes a day, we’ll live a longer life. The 55,000 participants in the study (which went on for many years) ranged in age from 18 to 100. Runners had much lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, with a bonus three years tacked on to their life span. Even runners who ran approximately 51 minutes a week had this same reduced mortality. Their conclusion: Running five to 10 minutes a day results in this reduced mortality. Despite its conclusion, the research doesn’t actually say “five minutes per day.” The study also didn’t say why it has to be running. I wonder, too, about the people who participated. If they were healthy enough to run for a half hour, maybe they were already in a health category that would give them a longer life. In terms of impact on the body, I don’t understand why a five-minute run multiple times a week is as good as a half-hour run when it comes to cardiovascular strength. This is one time I’m going to give a thumbs-down on research study suggestions, at least for us, and point to another study (2011) that calls for 15 minutes a day or 90 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity ... like walking. A brisk 30-minute walk a few times a week has benefits. Or spending time on a treadmill or stationary bicycle, or swimming in a pool. Best bet: malls that open their doors early for morning walkers. That environment is warm/cool (depending on the season), has a level surface and is safer than being out on the streets. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. • The first voyage by the Clermont was met by the public with suspicion. Many referred to the boat as “Fulton’s Folly” due to its unusually long length and the smoke and fire associated with the vessel’s newfangled steam engine. Many thought it would blow up or sink on its first voyage; they were wrong! In fact, because Fulton wisely paid attention to passenger comfort, the Clermont became a very profitable vessel for transporting passengers to destinations on the Hudson River. Fulton subsequently formed and led a company offering services on six major rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

● The next time you’re planning a trip to Indiana, keep in mind that in that state it is illegal to talk behind a person’s back or engage in “spiteful gossiping.” ● It’s been claimed that prodigy William James Sidis had the highest IQ ever recorded (though any record of the test has been lost). At the age of 18 months, he was reading The New York Times; by the time he was 8, he had taught himself Latin, Greek, French, Russian, German, Hebrew, Turkish and Armenian and had invented his own language he called Vendergood. At the age of 11 he became the youngest person to enroll in Harvard University, and when he was 12 he lectured the Harvard Mathematical Club on four-dimensional bodies. He graduated cum laude at 16.

The alien-looking centipedes also are known as house centipedes, and while they do look like something out of a nightmare, they are voracious eaters of other bugs like beetles and spiders. Still, you don’t want to find any of those pests lurking under a pile of laundry. Ants, house centipedes and spiders all can sting or bite. The first thing you’ll want to do is find where many of these pests are entering the basement. Even if the walls and floor are structurally sound and appear dry, very small cracks or holes may have developed over the years. Ants are the easiest to track: Find one of their trails, or create a trail by placing a small amount of crumbs in a pile on an otherwise clean floor. The trail will typically lead back to the perimeter of the basement where the floor and wall meet. Mark each entry spot with tape or chalk. Next, test how bad the house centipede or beetle population may be, by setting down sticky traps in the areas you last saw these pests. Even if you just catch one, it will confirm their presence. A pest-control professional can do the most thorough job of eliminating these creatures, or you can find bug sprays specific to these pests at homeimprovement stores. But if you don’t want them coming back, you’ll need to close up entry points and reduce the amount of moisture. The basement may seem dry, but the appearance of house centipedes often signals a moisture problem. Have a contractor specializing in basements evaluate the floor and walls to find out if water is seeping in. Small cracks and gaps need to be sealed using correct mortar or cement patching material to allow for expansion and contraction. Meantime, look around the outside foundation of the house for potential water and bug magnets, like piles of leaves or old mulch, drain spouts that are pouring water directly down into the foundation rather than being extended out several feet away, or firewood stacked against the wall. These issues can be dealt with quickly and easily and can reduce both bug and water issues. HOME TIP: Store boxes and place dirty laundry containers on platforms or shelves that keep them off the ground in areas that centipedes and spiders frequent. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
● Line your pots and pans with plain paper coffee filters to reduce scratches. Replace as needed. ● To keep clothing on the hanger in your closet, try the thin, velvet-lined ones. If you can’t find them, add strips of rubber shelf liner to the tops of your hangers, secured with a little duct tape or safety pins. ● If you have solar lights that stick in the ground, you’re going to love this: Grab one right out of the ground and flip a flowerpot over, stick it into the hole in the bottom of the pot, and you’ve got a nice little table lamp. Great if the power goes out! ● Here’s an easy and healthy way to add moisture and fiber to your burgers or meatballs: oatmeal. Add instead of package bread crumbs, which can include way too much unnecessary sugar or oils. The oats keep the meat nice and moist. ● Fruit salad can be frozen in small portions in the wells of a muffin tin. Press down and include juices. When frozen, it can be removed and the resulting frozen cups put in a freezer safe bag for use in smoothies later.

While the origins of Kiss and Make Up Day are unknown, it is an annual holiday observed on August 25th. So go and put aside any disagreements or arguments for the day and make it a day to remember. Life is too short!!
● Tank tops or scarves can be stored on a hanger to which you’ve attached plastic shower rings. Simply thread the scarf or the tank straps through the ring. They make a nice presentation, and you can fit many on the same hanger. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. ● On Aug. 31, 1888, Mary Ann Nichols, the first victim of London serial killer “Jack the Ripper,” is found murdered. The police were at a complete loss for suspects. However, two letters alluded to facts known only to the police and the killer. These letters, signed “Jack the Ripper,” gave rise to the serial killer’s nickname. ● On Aug. 27, 1937, George E.T. Eyston described his built-for-speed Thunderbolt as having two 2,000-horsepower Rolls Royce motors geared together. ● On Aug. 26, 1944, French Gen. Charles de Gaulle enters Paris, which had been formally liberated from the Germans the day before. As he entered the Place de l’Hotel, French collaborationists took a few sniper shots at him. ● On Aug. 29, 1962, Robert Frost leaves for the Soviet Union on a goodwill tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department in an effort to thaw Cold War relations. Frost’s poetry has established his international reputation as American’s unofficial poet laureate. ● On Aug. 30, 1974, a train entering a Zagreb, Yugoslavia, station derails, killing 153 people. The train should have slowed to 30 mph as it approached the station; however, the engineers not only failed to slow the train, but went through a red signal at about 60 mph.
