It’s something that you do every single day of your existence, but how much do you really know about sleep? Tidbits has some lesserknown facts about one of life’s necessities – shut-eye! • When you’re asleep, your body may be resting but your brain certainly isn’t! It remains hard at work constantly giving orders to the body’s various systems to keep it breathing, pumping blood, and digesting. Short-term memories are recorded in the brain during sleep. Did you know that sleeping shortly after learning something new will actually improve your ability to remember it? • Rapid eye movement, or REM sleep, is characterized by rapid and random movement of the eyes and accounts for about 25% of a total night’s sleep, 90 to 120 minutes. Prior to that are stages of light sleep, when our eye movements stop and brain waves are extremely slow. The first period of REM occurs about 90 minutes after a person falls asleep and lasts about 10 minutes. A sleeper will experience about four or five periods of REM, with each lengthening toward morning. Brain activity is heightened and this is the time of intense dreaming.

• Sleep deprivation has numerous negative effects on the body’s functions and wellbeing. A recent Harvard study has tied insufficient or irregular sleep to an increased risk for colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease in those who slept less than six hours a night. A shortage of sleep can put the body into a state of “high alert,” which can drive up blood pressure, putting a person at risk for heart attack and stroke. Just one extra hour a night can decrease your heart attack risk by 33%. And consider what that extra sleep will do for your family, social, and work relationships when you are less irritable, impatient, anxious, and depressed! • Lack of sufficient sleep can even lead to obesity! The hormones leptin and ghrelin are instrumental in controlling feelings of hunger and fullness. Inadequate sleep can increase production of ghrelin, which stimulates the appetite, raising the sensation of hunger by as much as 25%. Leptin signals the brain when the body is full, but not enough shut-eye drives leptin levels down. Combine these two and it’s a recipe for obesity. • Even an increase in wrinkles can occur when you don’t get enough rest. Your body releases extra cortisol, the “stress hormone” when you don’t get enough rest. Cortisol breaks down the skin’s collagen, that substance that maintains skin’s elasticity. • It’s a little alarming to know that 23% of commercial airline pilots admit that sleep deprivation affects their performance at least once a week. One-fifth of those surveyed disclosed that they have made serious mistakes as a result. Fourteen percent of truck drivers confess a “near miss” due to lack of sleep, while 44% of them say they never or rarely get enough sleep on work nights.

Burnt Friends
One of the toughest hurdles in life is to get back on your feet after miscommunication occurs between friends. “An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars.” Proverbs 18:19 When we are hurt by words, actions, or events, the pain can be so severe that we see, feel, and respond as a result of the pain we are in. Reactions and responses that are rooted in hurt almost always have negative results and consequences. Relationships that go south can have the same devastating effects as death. Many of us have to learn to keep moving forward with unresolved conflict. Forgiveness is powerful for soul healing, even if the other person is unresponsive. Every burnt relationship we have experienced can make us stronger if we let it. Forgive yourself, forgive others, and keep moving forward in humility.

"Laugh and the world laughs with you; snore, and you sleep alone!"
• Staying awake for 17 hours leads to decreased performance equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.05%. No sleep for 21 hours is comparable to 0.08% blood alcohol content. • How do you know if you’re sleep deprived? A sure sign is if it takes you less than five minutes to fall asleep at night. The optimum amount of time is between 10 and 15 minutes. Other symptoms include irritability, nervousness, and inability to tolerate stress, and problems with concentration and memory. You might also notice blurred vision, hand tremors, or a change in appetite. • We each have an internal “master clock” in our brains that coordinates the rhythm of our body’s functions. Known as the “circadian clock,” it is affected by external environmental factors, with light as the main factor influencing our 24-hour circadian cycle. These rhythms influence our sleep cycles, hormone release, and body temperature, and function best with a normal light-dark cycle. This master clock controls the productions of the hormone melatonin, the one that makes us sleepy. When there is less light, the clock tells the brain to produce more melatonin, resulting in drowsiness. When a person’s work hours are scheduled during the normal sleep period, it’s difficult to stay awake, and it can also be a health risk. It’s believed that melatonin protects the body against cancer. For those who are exposed to light at night, melatonin levels are reduced, and researchers believe those people are more prone to colon and breast cancer. • Studies indicate that the risk of cardiovascular disease declines significantly when a person regularly sleeps seven hours a night.

It’s estimated that sleeplessness contributes to one in six fatal highway accidents. It seems that men are more likely than women to drive while drowsy and twice as likely as women to fall asleep while driving. Also related to gender, women need about an hour more sleep per night, yet are twice as likely to have insomnia. Unfortunately, the loss of that hour, coupled with stress level, biological stages, and responsibilities makes them more prone to depression. • A lack of sleep decreases your attention and concentration and inhibits the cementing of memories, so that you cannot remember what you learn from day to day. A scientific study has determined that a 60 to 90 minute nap can be as beneficial as a full night’s sleep for learning a new skill. A “power nap” can improve alertness, creativity, productivity, motor skills, and accuracy, as well as reduce stress and risk of heart attack, and aid in weight loss. • What about those folks who never seem to need an alarm clock to wake up in the morning? These individuals are awakened by the release of a stress hormone called adrencorticotrophin as they unconsciously anticipate the stress of waking up. • If you’re one of those who kicks and punches while asleep, you are more susceptible to neurological disease. Experts say that “violent sleepers” have a 50% chance of developing Parkinson’s Disease or dementia and should consult a neurologist to diagnose the problem. • If you think that drinking coffee will help you stay awake, consider that those folks who drink four or more caffeinated beverages on a daily basis have a higher risk for sleep apnea. Many years ago I had to do a presentation to 25 co-workers. I was up all night working on it. When I got to the meeting and opened my brief case, I realized I had been carrying around backgammon board all morning.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel ● On Sept. 27, 1540, in Rome, the Society of Jesus -- a Roman Catholic missionary organization -- receives its charter from Pope Paul III. The first Jesuits took vows of poverty and chastity, and made plans for the conversion of millions to Catholicism. ● On Sept. 23, 1875, Billy the Kid, born William Henry McCarty, is arrested for the first time after stealing a basket of laundry. He broke out of jail and roamed the American West, eventually earning a reputation as an outlaw and murderer, with a rap sheet that allegedly included 21 murders. ● On Sept. 29, 1907, Gene Autry, perhaps the greatest “singing cowboy” of all time, is born in Tioga, Texas. While Autry was no cowboy, he was a genuine Westerner who had lived on a ranch. His lasting fame came from films and his first movie, “In Old Santa Fe,” eventually was followed by nearly 100 other films.

A-1 Home Healthcare Proudly Presents
Senior News Line by Rick Struve
The ‘Independence at Home’ Series Part Five – Aids for Daily Living There comes that point in the life of a senior when the thought of moving into an assisted living complex or a skilled nursing facility becomes a reality. Quite often, you can postpone that move and remain independent at home with some basic adjustments to your environment. Let’s face it, as we get older, some tasks that we would not have given a second thought to have become increasingly difficult. Bending, reaching, and even dressing can develop into a major chore. Luckily, there are many inexpensive items that can aid us with common physical activities.
In the Vehicle
There are some people with very limited mobility that have great difficulty getting out or into of a vehicle, even with assistance of a care giver. For people that have trouble turning to get their legs out of the door, there are such devices as swivel seats. These are thin, cushioned pads that can be sat upon while travelling. Once stopped, these pads swivel to help a person better position themselves without causing pain or skin tears on the back of the thighs. If you have difficulty standing up from a car seat, or lowering yourself into the car seat, there is a device that creates a temporary support to give you optimal leverage. These items have several names, but commonly known as a ‘Handy Bar’. When a car door is open, these can be inserted into the ‘striker’ – which is where the door latches to the frame of the car when it is shut, which creates an ‘arm’ for you to hold on to for support.
In the Bedroom If you find yourself struggling to get out of bed, installing a bed rail is a great way to get the assist you need. There are several styles of bed rails available, but most of the common rails are made to fit in between the mattress and the box spring for simple placement. Installing a rail will give you support by grabbing the bar, and lifting yourself into a sitting position. Some people suffer from occasional minor incontinence accidents, especially at night during sleep. A smart idea is to use an underpad that goes on top of the sheets for a person to lie upon. There are disposable pads that are thrown away when soiled, and there are washable underpads which are less noisy when you move around as well as being reusable. This is the last of a five part series. I hope you have gained some insight into ideas for staying home a little longer. Obviously, it is nearly impossible to discuss the many products that will come in handy at your home. For further information, help or other ideas, please contact your local home health store. Please contact your current medical product supplier or give us a call at A-1 Home Health Care, 319-362-1084 My mind works like lightning. One brilliant flash and it is gone.

Privacy is shattered when an old friend takes up residence in your home. Lend them an ear, Aquarius, and set some boundaries. You don’t want them to get too comfortable.
February 19– March 20
Passion burns bright at home, and amazing things begin to happen. An assignment is a step up at work. Hit it with courage, conviction and zeal,Pisces.
March 21– April 19
Efforts to clean up and clear out at home begin. Not all parties are on board. Work to change that, Aries. Suspicions grow at the office. Don’t add to the fury.
April 20– May 20
Advice given does not necessarily mean advice taken, Taurus. Say what’s on your mind and leave it be. A senior receives interesting news.
May 21– June 21 Values change, and a principle you once clung to no longer applies. Let go, Gemini, so you can move forward. A sales tactic works in your favor.
June 22– July 22
Concerns grow over a loved one’s situation. An intervention may be in order, Cancer. A well-written piece draws fire from more than one source.
July 23– August 22 Work to foster a connection, Leo, and the relationship will grow. Tensions break at home and harmony reigns again. Take everyone out for a little fun.
August 23– September 22 Frustration reaches an all-time high at work. A meeting proves invaluable. Lady luck smiles on a friend. Be supportive, Virgo. The lunacy at home continues.
September 23– October 22
Fall outings bring family together. A master plan comes together at work, and your responsibilities grow. Take them seriously, Libra. It’s your turn to shine.
October 23– November 21
Halt, Scorpio. Some thoughts should stay thoughts. Your idea may look good on paper, but pan in real life. A financial matter is clarified.
November 22– December 21
Bravo, Sagittarius! You manage to swoop in and save the day on multiple occasions this week, and someone important notices. An auto issue persists.
One of the most popular and beloved First Ladies in American history, Jacqueline Kennedy was a symbol of style and elegance. Learn more about the life of a member of one of America’s most famous families. • Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy was the first First Lady to be born in a hospital. The daughter of a wealthy stockbroker, Jackie experienced a privileged childhood full of ballet lessons, French lessons, and equestrian training and events. At age 15, she was enrolled at the prestigious Miss Porter’s School, a Connecticut boarding school established in 1843 that stressed demanding academic courses, as well as proper manners and social skills. During her senior year, Jackie was named “Debutante of the Year” by the local newspaper. • Jackie’s choice of college was Vassar with studies in history, literature, art, and French, spending her junior year studying in Paris. Following a transfer to George Washington University and subsequent graduation, she took a job at the Washington TimesHerald photographing and interviewing local citizens. One of her final assignments with the paper was covering the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. • Jackie met Massachusetts senator-elect John F. Kennedy at a 1952 dinner party after he “leaned across the asparagus and asked her for a date.” They were married the following year. • Although she always wished to write a novel, instead she encouraged her husband to write Profiles in Courage, which she helped him edit, a book that won the Pulitzer Prize. • Jackie suffered a miscarriage in 1955, and delivered a stillborn daughter, Arabella in 1956. Daughter Caroline was born the following year. In 1960, John Kennedy was elected the 35th president of the United States, and three weeks later their son John, Jr. was born. • Shortly after the inauguration, Jackie began her famous project of redecorating the White House and historically restoring the public rooms, hunting down furnishings that had been removed from the White House. She was awarded an Emmy for her TV special highlighting the tour of the White House following the restoration. Jackie hosted many fine cultural events at the Executive Mansion – performances of opera, ballet, Shakespeare, and jazz. She had an elegant sense of style, and her fashions set trends around the world.

• Jackie was 34 years old in 1963 when her husband was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. She had experienced the death of her three-day-old son just three months before. After spending several months in Washington following his death, she moved to New York City to establish the John F. Kennedy Library. • In 1968, Jackie married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who was 23 years her senior, and the couple split their time among homes in Athens and Skorpios Island, Greece, and Paris. Seven years later, she was a widow once again. • As a widow in her mid-40s, Jackie returned to the literary world, taking a job as an editor with Viking Press, later moving over to Doubleday Books. At age 64, she was diagnosed with nonHodgkin’s lymphoma. She gave up her threepack-a-day smoking habit and cut back on her work schedule at Doubleday, but the cancer continued to spread. Just four months after her diagnosis, she passed away. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery next to JFK, their son Patrick and daughter Arabella.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver
● In January of 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of maggots as a medical device for cleaning wounds. ● If you’re planning a trip to Laramie, Wyo., you might want to make a pilgrimage to the Ames Pyramid. At the end of a 2-mile dirt road, in the middle of featureless pastureland, you’ll find this 60-foot-tall monument seemingly plunked down at random. The pyramid was built in 1882 near a line of the Union Pacific railroad and in honor of the railroad’s financiers. It was thought that the monument would be a welcome distraction to railroad passengers traveling through the plains of Wyoming. The decline of railroad travel, however, caused many tracks to be removed, including the line that ran by the pyramid. Now only cows are left to admire this relic of the industrial age. ● The 1979 horror movie “Alien” has become a cult classic, but not many people realize that it was originally titled “Star Beast. ● It was noted wit Ambrose Bierce who made the following sage observation: “All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philosopher.” (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Storing a Window Air
Conditioner
4045 Crestview Dr Solon
Q: This is our first year renting an apartment. I’m from the South, where air conditioning is used almost year-round. But my mother recommended that we put away our window air conditioner for the winter to save on bills. Do you have any tips for doing this? -- Janice in Mystic, Conn. A: Storing the air conditioner is one of the less-celebrated fall rituals in the Northeast. Sometime in between leafpeeping, apple-picking, autumn fairs and trick-or-treating, people must face up to the fact that they need to come home and drag the A/C unit out of the window. Here’s how to make it less painful. --Recruit a friend or three. Even a small 5,000 BTU unit should be tandem lifted. And if you’re hoisting a larger unit, you’ll need two lifters and a puller to make sure the unit is safely lifted into the apartment. (I’ll spare you the heartstopping tale of the time I tried to do this by myself and was discovered by my boyfriend struggling to stop the unit from flipping out of the window to the car roof three stories below.) --Prepare a storage box ahead of time. If you don’t have the original unit’s box, get a sturdy box that will fit the dimensions of the unit, with a little room to store its expander panels. --Turn off the unit a few days ahead of time. This allows for the condensed water in the unit to evaporate. --At the same time, remove and clean the air filter. Use a vacuum to get rid of dirt and debris. Soak a really dirty filter in warm water and dish soap, rinse and dry completely, and put back into the unit. --Clear a space to set down the unit after you’ve lifted it inside, and line the space with old towels. Place the air conditioner upright on the towels in case water from condensation is still in the unit. --Remove the expander panels and brackets from both sides of the unit. Put the screws into a small plastic bag and tape to the side of the air conditioner. --Wipe down the exterior of the unit with a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt. --With your friends, tandem lift the unit into the prepared storage box. Place the panels and brackets into the box and pad the sides with dry towels or bubble wrap. --Tandem lift the unit to a storage area that’s protected from the weather. --Buy your friends dinner, and be available to help lift their air conditioner out. HOME TIP: Clean a window unit’s air filter every two weeks during the cooling season to keep the air conditioner working efficiently. ● “While at a backyard barbecue now that the weather has turned nice out (down in the South, anyway), I learned this trick from a neighbor. Put hot dogs in the slow cooker. Don’t add water or anything. They taste really good without taking up space on the grill.” -- J.V. in Alabama ● To keep algae from growing in your backyard birdbath, add a few copper pennies. Or you can get a small piece of copper pipe from the home-improvement store. It keeps the algae from getting out of control. ● When you need an extra garbage bag, like during a party or while doing lawn chores, try this cool trick: Use a large popup laundry bin, and line it with a lawn-andleaf garbage bag. Use chip clips to secure it at the top if you need to. ● “We keep a regular-size galvanized steel trash can with lid out on our deck for the kids’ toys. It’s big enough to hold everything, convenient enough to drag around the yard to clean up, and the lid protects the toys from the weather and bugs!” -- W.K. in Illinois ●“I had a plastic storage bin that cracked, and I was about to throw it out when my son stopped me. He cut holes in either side and used it to cover the outdoor pipes that stick up out of the ground.
