A recent poll from the Pew Research Center revealed some interesting information about library users that I would like to share with you. 10% of Americans have never used a library but they still think that libraries are good for their communities. E-book use may be on the rise but only 4% of Americans read only digital books. People that read both digital and print books prefer choose to read each format under different circumstances. You may have heard publishing companies restrict public libraries access to e-books believing it will eat into book sales. The Pew Research data differs and shows that library users are more likely to purchase books in printed form than others. A single E-book for libraries can cost as much as five times more than printed copies. Most best sellers cost $80-95 per copy.

Butter Molds Q: At a farm auction several years ago, I bought three butter molds that were obviously quite old. Each has a pattern, with the most elaborate depicting a cluster of roses. Are these collectible? -Emporia, Va. A: It was during the reign of Charles II in Britain that decorating butter became popular. In America, this practice thrived due in no small part to farm wives who marked the homemade butter they sold so it would be readily identified as their product. No two farms used the same mold in the same county or area. The more detailed the pattern of a mold, the more expensive it can be. For example, a rare Amish hexagon mold with intricate pattern of acorns and oak leaves recently sold for $650 at auction. Crenshaw, Musk, Honeydew, Casaba, Water, Persian ... the list of melons that are grown these days is long. Melons come in a many sizes, shapes, colors and flavors. Sweet, watery and cooling, they’re a gift of the summer harvest that quenches our thirst with a food we can practically drink and eat at the same time! Melons prefer hot, dry days and cool evenings to produce the sugar that gives them their nectarous flavor. Depending on where you live, a ripe, juicy, truly sweet melon may be a gift of the harvest at your local grocery store. While melons transport well, they must be harvested for shipping while still green. Sometimes this works well, other times not, and it can be just another case of falling for beauty that is only skin deep. When choosing melons at the store, press and smell the spot where the fruit was severed from the stem. It should give slightly to the touch and exude a pleasant perfume. Almost all melons, except watermelons, can be judged this way. Looking for a good watermelon is a little more difficult. There is science behind the “thumping” of a watermelon to test for ripeness. A ripe melon will give off a hollow sound, which indicates that the melon has developed its water content. All melons should feel heavy for their size, a sign that they are full of juice. Locally grown melons also will have a flat, yellow spot on one side where it lay as it ripened in the field. Melons are an ancient fruit, first cultivated in Asia and Africa over 4,000 years ago. From there they were introduced to western and northern Europe. Watermelons in particular provided an important source of water to primitive people, and it is believed that the first watermelons were brought to the Americas by African slaves. As a group, melons are a truly beneficial food. They are low in calories and high in potassium, as well as vitamins A and C. They also are a delicious source of fiber. Watermelons are high in lycopene, the pigment that gives them that beautiful pinkish-red color. Lycopene has been shown to help prevent heart disease and some cancers. Even though most melons are known for their sweetness, their flavor melds well with savory ingredients: mixed with herbs and vinegars in salads, or paired with cured meats such as prosciutto and salami for an appetizer. For dessert, the options go from simply scooping the seeds from half a cantaloupe and replacing it with a dollop of ice cream or yogurt, to combining melons with other fruits to serve with a pudding or cream, or pureeing melons for sorbets and ices. JELLIN’ MELONS Fresh or frozen pineapple, papaya, kiwi, figs, guava and gingerroot all contain enzymes that prevent gelatin from setting, so never use them in gelatin recipes. If you don’t have strawberries on hand, you can use a cup of any canned fruits or juices, since the canning process kills this enzyme. 1 large cantaloupe or honeydew melon 1 package (3 ounces) strawberry-banana gelatin (or your choice of gelatin flavor) 1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries, leaves and stems removed 1. Cut the melon in half lengthwise from bud to stem end; discard seeds. Cut a thin slice off the bottom of each half so the melon sits level. Pat the inside of the melon dry and turn it melon-side down on a paper towel to drain thoroughly. 2. In a large bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in applesauce and strawberries. Pour into melon halves. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. 3. Just before serving, carefully slice each melon half into three wedges. Any extra gelatin can be poured into a bowl, covered with plastic wrap and chilled until set. Now John Wayne Enterprises is suing Duke University because the school thinks it owns the title to all things named “Duke.” The Wayne family claims that, “Duke does not own the word ‘Duke’ in all contexts and for all purposes.” It contends that the North Carolina university believes products bearing John Wayne’s world-renowned image and signature will somehow be confused as being associated with Duke University. Case in point: “Duke” brand Kentucky bourbon whiskey. The bottle is imprinted with “Monument Valley Distillers,” and John Wayne’s image and signature are prominently featured on the label, along with the image of a shotgun casing. The university doesn’t market or sell alcohol, but it objects to ANYTHING sold with the name “Duke.” We checked with a lawyer, who said, “If they don’t use the name ‘Duke University,’ the Wayne family is not infringing on their name.” *** Gwyneth Paltrow is spearheading the “Stand Up to Cancer Telethon.” The show will air Friday, Sept. 5, on four big networks in Canada and 26 cable outlets in the U.S., including HBO, Showtime, E, Ion, Lifetime, Logo, Oxygen and TNT. But where are ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox? Thanks to the success of “Maleficent” ($650 million and climbing), Disney is giving the 1941 animated classic “Dumbo” the live-action treatment. “This one is really rare,” says 5-yearold Jude, as he examines one of the pieces of cornflower blue sea glass he and his brother and grandmother collected along the California shoreline. “Oh, wait, this one might be rarer!” chimes in 7-year-old brother JD, as he sets a teal piece to the side of the mounds of sorted glass they dumped out on the kitchen table from a big bowl of treasures. “Spending time with my seven young grandkids is about learning together and making discoveries that ignite the human spirit,” says Jan Bowman, retired teacher. “Whether you are 6 or 60, connecting with one another around an activity we all enjoy is catching. That’s what the hunt for sea glass does for us.” Recently, after a big storm, I said, “Let’s go to the coast this morning. I bet we’ll find some rare sea glass that was churned up in the ocean and landed on the sand, just for us to find.” Sure enough, nature’s jewelry was dotting the beach. That’s when they found a piece of yellow glass, possibly from Depression glass tableware. “It is considered

extremely rare,” she says. What is sea glass and what is the allure? Plain and simple, it’s discarded glass that was cast into the ocean and lost at sea -until some pieces came back in interesting shapes and sizes after being tumbled and chemically weathered. It’s often castoffs from glass factories, or discarded bottles from shipwrecks that broke and tumbled in the sea, decades and centuries ago. Nowadays, it’s a hobby that knows no bounds, popular stateside to global shores from Australia to the U.K. Whether your family gets hooked on collecting sea glass, seashells or pretty

rocks and pebbles along streams and around lakes, there’s always fun to be had when you return home with pockets full of finds. Enjoy these easy-to-do crafts using sea glass, shells or stones: ¥ Frame a photo of your child at the beach where the sea glass or shells were found. Embellish the plain frame with a select few of the treasures glued to a corner. ¥ Glue “finds” on the top of a small box in interesting patterns. Fill it with more summer souvenirs. ¥ Tie thin cording around a find, knot it, and glue the knot in place for a memoryfilled necklace.
