Rubies Bar is expanding, come check them out at 817 Main Street for their 3rd Annual Smokin’ Up main Street BBQ Contest.

Main Street will be shut down for this event. There will be 7 plus vendors competing in three different categories. They will be vending food from noon till they run out!

There will be two bands playing outside. Challenger band will play from noon until 4:pm. Then there will be a Tae Kwon Do demonstration before the Hard Tellin’ Band starts at 6pm playing until 10pm This event has FREE ADMISSION!

You sit down at your desk, switch on your computer and get ready to start typing when suddenly you see it - dust particles everywhere, on your computer case, on your monitor and keyboard, even on your computer cables. Ugh. It's time to get out the supplies and clean up all of that dust before it wreaks havoc on your computer.

To clean your computer, you will need several supplies. These include compressed air, cotton swabs, glass cleaner, isopropyl rubbing alcohol, lintfree cloths and a screwdriver. Before you begin, you should turn off your computer and unplug it.

Next up are the case and the monitor. Remove the side cover of the case and spray away the dust with compressed air. If your computer has an air filter, remove it, rinse it with warm water, dry it with a lint-free cloth and replace it. Reattach the side cover and turn your attention to the monitor. If you have a CRT monitor, spray a lint-free cloth with glass cleaner and wipe down the screen. If you have an LCD monitor, you will have to purchase a special cloth to wipe it down.

A recent poll from the Pew Research Center revealed some interesting information about library users that I would like to share with you.

10% of Americans have never used a library but they still think that libraries are good for their communities.

E-book use may be on the rise but only 4% of Americans read only digital books. People that read both digital and print books prefer choose to read each format under different circumstances.

You may have heard publishing companies restrict public libraries access to e-books believing it will eat into book sales. The Pew Research data differs and shows that library users are more likely to purchase books in printed form than others. A single E-book for libraries can cost as much as five times more than printed copies. Most best sellers cost $80-95 per copy.

When you need a little extra money, chances are you can find some if you know where to look. Even a small change in habits can leave more money in your wallet.

• Check banks and credit unions to see if you can find a better interest rate than you have now.

• Go generic at the grocery store for one month.

by Freddy Groves Adaptive Sports Get VA Grant The Department of Veterans Affairs is putting up $8 million for grants to providers of adaptive sports opportunities for disabled veterans and members of the armed forces.

A lot goes into providing events and opportunities: training, supplies, coaches, equipment, recreation therapists, program development and more, right in the veteran’s community.

For more advanced athletes, there are the Paralympic and adaptive sport programs on Support the Springville regional and national levels.

“Last Chain on Billie: How One Extraordinary Elephant Escaped the Big Top”

There are few vegetables with a more storied past and debatable reputation than okra. This slender green pod comes from the lovely yellow flower of the seemingly impervious Hibiscus Esculentus plant. While this hardy crop would flourish almost anywhere, okra is grown mainly in the South. Those who’ve eaten okra love it, and when separated from it, for reasons of geography or season, miss it.

Known to some as ladies’ fingers, bhindi, bamia or mostly commonly as gumbo, which is its West African name, the okra plant is believed to have arrived in North American with the African slave trade. It’s possible that slaver traders or the captives themselves stowed away seeds to bring to the New World.

Okra was cherished by both slaves and slave owners. Southern agricultural journals, dating back to the mid-1800s, account that it was widely enjoyed and eaten frequently during the growing season in a variety of preparations.

The Cajun and Creole cuisines of Louisiana resulted from a New World fusion of foods from the diverse cultures of its early settlers. It was in Louisiana that okra gumbo, the famous dish named after its key ingredient, was born.

Okra was a predominant ingredient in the regional stew of vegetables and chicken, shrimp or crawfish. The gelatinous liquid in okra helps to thicken gumbos and soups. Slaves also used the seeds as a coffee substitute and the leaves for medicinal purposes.

Relatively easy to grow, okra tolerates high temperature and scant water, and also is nutritious.

Okra is an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamins B-6 and C, as well as folic acid, potassium and calcium. Okra also contains properties to help with diet-related illnesses like diabetes. The gelatinous interior found in okra helps to slow the absorption of sugar into the blood by forming a kind of gel coating inside the bowels. This slows down the absorption of food from the gut, evening out the peaks in blood glucose that occur after meals.

Even with all its health benefits and historical acclaim, okra has been controversial from its arrival in North America. There are those refuse to eat it or who think it’s a suspicious-looking pod of slimy repute. This is because of the gelatinous substance okra releases when cut.

Proper selection and cooking methods will eliminate that truly minor detail and showcase its delicious flavor. When choosing okra, it’s important to look for small, tender pods, as thick, long pods tend to be tough. Okra should never be sliced until immediately before cooking. This help to prevent some of its gelatinous interior from seeping out.

Once you’ve tried this delicacy properly cooked, okra will steal your affections, as it has for so many others who salivate at the mere mention of its name. My recipe for Okra and Shrimp Hush Puppies showcases the best qualities of okra in a historical Southern recipe that is packed with Creole flavors.

OKRA AND SHRIMP HUSH PUPPIES These hush puppies are the perfect side dish for baked, broiled or fried fish, or it makes a wonderful appetizer when served with a spicy dipping sauce. You can keep the fried hush puppies warm in a 225 F oven for up to 15 minutes.

1 cup self-rising yellow cornmeal mix 1/2 cup self-rising flour 1 cup medium-size raw shrimp, chopped 1/4 cup finely diced onion, 1/2 cup red or green bell pepper, chopped finely 1/2 cup celery, diced finely 1/2 cup fresh, chopped okra or frozen and thawed cut okra 1 1/2 teaspoons Creole or Old Bay seasoning 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1/4 cup beef broth 1/2 cup carbonated water Frying oil 1 teaspoon salt 1. Stir together the cornmeal mix and flour in large bowl until combined. Sprinkle shrimp, onion, bell pepper, celery and okra with 1 teaspoon of the Creole seasoning and combine to coat with the spices. Add the shrimp and vegetable mixture to the cornmeal mixture.

2. In a small bowl, stir together the egg, broth, water and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon Creole seasoning. Pour the egg mixture into the cornmeal mixture using just enough to moisten the cornmeal. Let stand 5 to 7 minutes.

3. Pour oil into a Dutch oven to a depth of 4 inches; heat to 350 F. Drop batter by level tablespoonfuls into hot oil, and fry in batches for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes, flipping hush puppies over and frying for another 2 minutes on the other side until golden brown.

4. Drain on a wire rack over paper towels; sprinkle with salt and serve immediately. ***

Instead of spending her life surrounded by family and free to wander the jungles of Asia, Billie was captured, fenced in, had all four legs shackled and likely was beaten into submission. Captured elephants also routinely are starved and sometimes kept awake for several days -anything to break the animal’s spirit.

The isolation, the food deprivation, the cruelty are all used to make creatures such as Billie “trainable.”

She arrived in the United States in 1966 at age 4, a purchase of the small Southwick’s zoo in Mendon, Massachusetts. Experts now know that severing the mother-baby attachments of certain animals too soon -- especially sensitive creatures such as elephants --- can cause incalculable psychological damage. This is what happened to Billie, and why most of her life she was labeled as a problem elephant.

Traveling in trucks, chained and barely able to move, and performing surrounded by harsh lights and blaring music was Billie’s nightmarish life.

The chains eventually were removed when she became part of the largest elephant rescue in American history.

Billie now lives out her life in Tennessee, free to roam through open meadows at a sanctuary for performing elephants and with the comfort of being part of a herd.

This remarkable book is difficult and, yes, painful to read, but necessary if we hope to improve the lot of performing animals in this country.

Beatty wrote, directed and stars as the eccentric, reclusive millionaire Howard Hughes, with Beatty’s wife, Annette Bening, playing Hughes’ wife. Also in the cast are Lily Collins, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen. Beatty’s last film was “Town and Country,” with an equally impressive cast: Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, Garry Shandling, Jenna Elfman and Charlton Heston. Unfortunately it cost $90 million to produce but only made $10.5 million.

Beatty won an Oscar and a Golden Globe award for directing “Reds” (1981), which cost $32 million and earned $50 million (a good sum for that time). In addition, “Dick Tracy” cost $46 million and earned $163 million, and “Bugsy” cost $30 million and took in $50 million. The as-yet-untitled Hughes biopic, expected to open in May 2015, cost a modest $26.7 million to make. *** The next rising star is Nicholas Hoult. I don’t know a young child who doesn’t love a hammer. Watch when kids grab one tightly in both small hands, lift it high and pound. Thud! They see it do something.

It might be only a nick on a board, or, if lucky, they’ll hit a nail square on.

Throughout the action, it’s a thrilling feeling of control and an introduction to the adult world.

Hammers can be the perfect tool for kids to make imprints of fragile flowers, too. When they tap, tap, tap a waxpaper-covered flower on fabric, they magically see the bloom’s natural colors and shapes appear before their eyes.

No wonder families recently filled the benches at a craft booth created by craft studio Heartfelt, at our local weekend farmer’s market.

Pounding natural designs of violet pansies onto fabric was the first step. Then the children learned to hand-sew pouches with simple stitches after the pounding. Even some pre-schoolers could sew

handily with adult assistance.

Here’s how: 1. Cut two pieces of plain white cotton or muslin fabric 2 3/4 inch wide by 3 inches long with pinking shears.

2. Put one of the fabric pieces on a cutting board or a flat piece of wood. Carefully set a fresh pansy bloom in the middle of the fabric -- front side down and stem side up. Cover it with a sheet of wax paper, and hammer over the wax-paper-covered flower until its color has been absorbed

into the fabric. Remove the wax paper and pansy to reveal the natural, colorful floral design.

3. It’s time to sew the two fabric pieces together to form the neck pouch. Thread a large needle with a 30-inch length of embroidery floss. Stack the fabric pieces with the floral print on top and, beginning at the top right corner, sew the sides and bottom together with a running stitch.

Guide your child’s hands when needed.

When complete, remove the needle and knot the end of the floss to the starting corner of the pouch.

Place the pouch around your child’s neck and put a coin or treasure inside.
