Early in the morning, late at night, when a fire breaks out of control, you can count on your local fire department to be there. While some departments consist of paid employees, others are a mix of paid employees and volunteers. There are about 800,000 volunteer firefighters in the United States, accounting for more than half the total of firefighters, and you could be one of them.

That’s right. There may be an opportunity to serve as a volunteer firefighter in your area.

While some fire departments do not permit volunteer firefighters, others do. Some, in fact, depend heavily upon volunteers due to budget constraints. To find out if such an opportunity exists in your area, call your local fire department. The staff there should be able to let you know where the nearest opportunity is and how you can go about applying for it.

There are several steps to becoming a volunteer firefighter. First, you must decide whether you are willing to commit to the endeavor. It is not one to be taken lightly. You will have to undertake several hours of training, and should you complete the process and become a volunteer firefighter, you may have to put your life on the line. To ensure you are serious, your local fire department may suggest you ride along on one of their calls. This will give you a good feel for what you might be in for.

The willingness to commit is not enough. You must also qualify. Criteria vary by fire department. You may need to be a certain age and pass some physical tests. You may need to be certified in CPR and basic first aid. On top of this, you will also have to do some training. Again, this will vary by department. All firefighters, however, must complete a 110-hour National Fire Protection Association-certified course.

Volunteer firefighters do not get paid, and depending upon where they serve, they may have to work more than a couple of shifts per month.

They do get experience, however, which could lead to a full-time paid position in the field later down the road.

Serving as a volunteer firefighter is by no means an easy job. You must be ready to serve at a moment’s notice and willing to risk everything to ensure the safety of others. Apply only if you are seriously interested and be prepared to put in the time.

Avoid Last-Minute College Expenses If you have a just-graduated high-school senior going off to college, what might give you additional sticker shock when you unload your student at the dorm is discovering all the extras you still need to buy.

Start now and space out your purchases over the summer.

The local stores near the college will be all ready for you to do your last-minute buying, but their prices won’t necessarily be what you want to pay.

The first step is to contact the school and get a list of what is provided and what is allowed in dorm rooms. Some questions to ask: If the space is a suite or triple/quad dorm, is there a stocked kitchen? How much closet space is allotted for each person? Is cooking allowed?

What size are the mattresses?

What is the approved method for hanging pictures or bulletin boards/dry erase boards on the wall? How high off the floor are the beds?

Here’s a partial list of things to buy or bring: Under-bed clear storage bins Bed risers to elevate beds a few inches Desktop storage -- stackable trays Clothes hangers, Fan, Alarm clock, Basic tool kit Flashlights and batteries (also good for walking across campus at night) Trash can, Desk lamp Sheets (2 sets), Extra pillows Laundry bag/basket HDMI, computer cables, WiFi adapters Power-surge protectors, extension cords Space Bags for bulky seasonal items (think puffy coats in November) If your student will have a roommate, the two need to compare notes in advance about who will bring what: coffee maker, small refrigerator, microwave, printer, television, behindthe-door mirror, matching decorations, mini stereo, area rug and tap lights.

The Bravest

It is with much respect and deep sadness that I write this article this month. As most of you may know Springville Fire and Rescue lost two of its members over the past month. Ray Wyman passed away on May 3. Ray Wyman joined Springville Fire and Rescue on Sept 1, 1957, during that time he served in many capacities, the highest being as Chief of Springville Fire and Rescue. He also served as a mentor to many young and aspiring firefighters just starting out. He was one of those that you could always go to with most any question pertaining to the fire service and he would have an answer for you. Ray, also brought with him his two sons Doug Wyman and Todd Wyman, who have also served the community of Springville, but it didn’t stop there. Doug brought with him two sons Cal Wyman and Curt Wyman.

Cal is currently working as a full time firefighter/paramedic for Mason City, IA. Curt still lives and actively serves the community of Springville as an Asst. Chief for Springville Fire and Rescue. Todd Wyman brought with him his daughter Katie Wyman, who started out with Springville Fire and Rescue as a junior firefighter and then gained full membership after her graduation from high school. Katie is now a full time student and athlete playing softball for Wartburg College.

Ray Wyman was a true firefighter and dedicated member of Springville Fire and Rescue and will be greatly missed by all that had the opportunity to know him.

THE CITY OF SPRINGVILLE is seeking applicants for the part-time position of Utility/Deputy Clerk. Position consists of 20-24 hours per week. Principal duties and responsibilities: process utility billing, monthly newsletter, cemetery, assist customers, answer phone, process reservations, and assist the City Clerk with general duties of the office. by Freddy Groves Deported Veterans Put yourself in this scenario: You’re a small child, maybe 3 years old. Your parents bring you to America from a foreign country. You grow up, go to school, lose whatever smattering of your original language you ever knew, play basketball, graduate from high school and then, in a gesture of gratitude to the only country you’ve ever known, you enlist in the military as a green-card holder, a permanent legal resident of the United States.

Fast-forward a few (or many) years, and suddenly you’re a U.S. military veteran. Maybe you marry, have a couple of kids, maybe start a business or go back to school on the GI Bill. Life is good.

Or, maybe life isn’t so good and you commit a crime. Maybe you get into drugs to fight the PTSD you don’t understand, and end up in jail. Maybe you steal some food for your kids. When you finish serving your time, having paid your debt to society, you’re told you will be deported -- back to the country where you were born, the country where you don’t know anyone and don’t even speak the language because you haven’t been there for 20 years or more.

It’s mostly ignored by the mainstream press, but hundreds of U.S. military veterans, maybe thousands, have been shipped off to foreign countries this way.

They’re either put on a plane or taken to the border and dumped -with nothing more than the clothes on their backs -- without legal counsel or anyone to help them with their rights or benefits. Some of them are highly decorated; some of them are ill. There’s an enclave in Mexico right now, supporting these service members who served our country ... and then were deported.

Under the regime of Scion, having any psychic ability at all is a crime, but having a rare dreamwalking talent like Paige’s means an even bigger target on your back. Paige scratches out a dangerous living reporting on others for her underworld boss, but after she accidentally kills a Scion guard, that precarious protection is shattered.

She is captured and taken away -- but instead of the execution she expects, she finds herself in a secret prison at the heart of a centuriesold conspiracy. It turns out there is an even greater power behind Scion, a godlike race called the Rephaim that wants not to destroy the voyants’ powers, but to control them for their own dark purposes.

The penal colony is a hole of brutality and despair, where beasts lurk beyond the gates and monsters just as frightening hold the keys.

Paige tries to look out for her fellow inmates while avoiding the attention of the cruel Rephaites, especially their vicious leader, who wants Paige’s ability for her own, and her inscrutable guardian, whose own motives are dangerously unclear. But Paige is a survivor, which is the power she’ll need most as she tries to get a handle on what exactly she is capable of and how far she is willing to go for her freedom.

“The Bone Season” takes place in an alternate timeline that uses a dash of the supernatural to rearrange history into a completely unpredictable future. The story starts weird and just keeps getting weirder, and it requires some patience on the part of the reader to suss out how this world works.

The author claims this is the first in a planned seven-book series, so there may be a ways to go before all secrets are revealed. But the questions are intriguing enough to suggest that the answers are worth waiting for. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

In February 2014, Coggon Area Betterment Association was notified that it was one of 31 area non-profit organizations to benefit from the Linn County Board of Supervisors Witwer Trust. Funding was awarded for the purpose of constructing a canoe/kayak launch at Buffalo Creek Park, located west of Coggon on County Road D62.

Linn County Conservation will oversee construction of the launch and has the project scheduled for completion in early August.

Additionally, Linn County Conservation has secured funding to conduct an analysis of the low-head dam in Buffalo Creek Park.

This project proposes to “study alternatives for mitigating the safety and environmental impacts,” taking into consideration the creek’s habitat, safety, and connectivity. The public is invited to learn more about the dam mitigation study at a public meeting on Thursday, June 19, at the Coggon Center. When the time of the meeting is confirmed, it will be announced and posted on www.coggonaba.com.

Buffalo Creek Park offers 13 campsites and a 1.2 mile nature trail as well as an open-air shelter equipped with picnic tables and grills.

It is the first park developed in Linn County and its location along the banks of the Buffalo Creek provides a scenic background for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and nature study. He’s currently onscreen in “Godzilla” and on Broadway playing Lyndon Baines Johnson in “All the Way,” for which he’s already won a Theatre World Award and may receive a Tony Award on its June 8 telecast. His next film is “Get a Job” with Miles Teller, Anna Kendrick, Marcia Gay Harden and Bruce Davison later this year, and as Po’s father in “Kung Fu Panda” next year.

Cranston also is set to play blacklisted screen writer Dalton Trumbo, who was dragged in front of The House Committee for Un-American Activities, in “Trumbo” opposite Helen Mirren, who has been cast as famed Hollywood columnist Hedda Hopper. Trumbo was eventually cleared of all charges. In 1993, he finally received an Oscar for writing “Roman Holiday,” which was presented to Ian McLellan Hunter (who fronted for him) in 1953, and an Oscar for “The Brave One” in 1956, which he wrote under the pen name of Robert Rich. *** The Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas took a cheap shot at Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Ben Affleck because “he was counting cards” (which is not illegal), while playing blackjack and winning big. The Hard Rock Hotel should be boycotted because when you’re losing they love you, and when you’re winning they ban you from ever playing blackjack there again.

Affleck has bigger fish to fry. He’s completed the new “Batman,” which will be released May 6, 2016, against “Captain America 3,” and he’s just announced his first directing project since winning the Oscar for “Argo.” Ben will direct and star in “Live by Night,” which he adapted from Dennis Lehane’s novel about the son of a police chief who descends onto a life of crime. *** Emma Stone is bouncing from “Spider Man” to Woody Allen. She’ll star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in an untitled film that Woody is producing, writing and directing. Five actresses and one actor have won their Oscars for Woody Allen films. Can you guess them? Food is a real and delicious way for people to share themselves and engage with each other and a greater cause, as my neighbor, Emily Torgrimson, has found.

She is co-founder and executive director of Eat for Equity, a nonprofit that builds a culture of generosity through sustainable community feasts (eatforequity.org). By inviting people to gather to eat and give what they can, the organization raises thousands of dollars for local and international nonprofit causes.

Emily’s creative approach to cooking features flavorful and simple recipes for busy families and her own household, developed by cooking for hundreds of people in home kitchens.

No wonder I was eager to join her on a recent Sunday afternoon to prepare a week’s worth of “salad-in-a-jar.” Improvising with the resources at hand, she scanned the refrigerator for the forgotten carrot, leftover black beans and other fresh odds and ends of inspiration. She lined

up a row of sparkling pint and quart size canning jars and together, we packed them to the brim. The carrot went into an Asian salad with sesame dressing, tofu, oranges, spring onions and spinach. The beans became a Southwestern salad with roasted poblano dressing, corn, tomatoes, cilantro and greens. The result was a rainbow shelf of grab-and-go meals.

Make salad-in-jar with your kids for healthy portable lunches, or use a large quart-size jar for a last-minute complement to an evening meal.

Gather the ingredients and get layering.

You’ll have salads for the week, with only a meal’s worth of clean-up and dishes.

SALAD-IN-A-JAR BASICS For one salad, use a wide-mouth pint-size jar such as a canning jar with tight-fitting lid.

Here’s the hands-on fun: 1. Pour 1-2 tablespoons of salad dressing into the bottom of the jar.

2. Layer small handfuls of your favorite raw vegetables such as grated carrots, chopped celery, sweet peppers, scallions and cucumbers on top of the dressing.

3. Add softer ingredients such as cubed tofu, pasta, grains, grated cheese, beans, cooked vegetables, tomatoes, citrus, berries and dried fruit.

4. Pack the remaining space with salad greens or spinach. Screw the lid on and refrigerate upright for up to 5 days.

5. To serve, shake the salad into a bowl. Add croutons and nuts, if you wish.
