You’ve heard it said, “Two heads are better than one.” Apparently, all of these featured folks believed it. This week, Tidbits looks at some famous couples who made their way through life paired together. • David Starsky and Kenneth Hutchinson were fictional Bay City, California, cops who raced through the streets in Starsky’s red Gran Torino for 92 episodes on ABC television. Actors Michael Glaser and David Soul portrayed the police pair under the radio call sign “Zebra three” from April of 1975 until May of 1979. • In 1939, Batman was introduced in “The Case of the Chemical Syndicate” in Detective Comics as a crime-fighter who masqueraded as playboy Bruce Wayne. The faithful sidekick Robin (aka Dick Grayson) joined the Caped Crusader in 1940, and together, the Dynamic Duo waged war against Gotham city crime. The pair moved to television in 1966 for 120 episodes of a liveaction series. On the big screen, Batman has been portrayed by box office stars Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale.

FAMOUS DUOS (continued): • Although most famous for their “Who’s on First?” baseball sketch, the comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello appeared in 38 films together. They got their start in burlesque in 1935, moving on to radio, film and television. They were box office stars by 1941 and began their own TV series in 1952. However, fame didn’t come without its difficulties. Both comics were habitual gamblers, and Abbott managed the pain from his epilepsy with alcohol. Costello battled regular bouts with rheumatic fever, which forced him to take a year off from work. On the day he returned to work, his infant son drowned in the family swimming pool. Both men were charged for back taxes by the IRS in 1956, and both were forced to sell their homes and film rights to cover the debt. • Bonnie Parker was just 19 years old and already married to an imprisoned murderer when she met 21-year-old Clyde Barrow in Texas. During the Great Depression, the outlaw couple reportedly was responsible for at least 12 bank robberies, countless smaller burglaries and 13 murders, including those of nine police officers. On the day their lives of crime came to an end in 1934, Bonnie and Clyde were driving a gray V-8 Ford, which was ambushed by the law in Louisiana. Officers fired a total of 167 bullets, killing the pair and halting a three-year spree. Over the next several years, carnival and fair goers viewed the Ford for 25 cents. The car was later purchased by Nevada’s Primm Valley Resort and Casino for $250,000 and can now be seen at the facility just outside Las Vegas.

An Arctic explorer came face to face with a polar bear. Afraid of being eaten, he fell to his knees and started praying. When the polar bear knelt down beside him and started praying too, the man shouted, "It's a miracle!" The polar bear opened one eye and said "Don't talk while I'm saying grace."

● On Jan. 12, 1888, the so-called Schoolchildren’s Blizzard kills 235 people, many of them children on their way home from school, across the Northwest Plains region of the United States. The storm came with no warning, and the temperature fell nearly 100 degrees F. in just 24 hours. ● On Jan. 16, 1919, the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes,” is ratified and becomes law. Large-scale distribution of alcoholic beverages and organized crime flourished anyway. ● On Jan. 17, 1950, 11 men steal more than $2 million from the Brinks Armored Car depot in Boston. It was almost the perfect crime, as the culprits weren’t caught until January 1956, just days before the statute of limitations for the theft expired. Only a small part of the money was ever recovered; the rest is fabled to be hidden in the hills north of Grand Rapids, Minn. ● On Jan. 14, 1969, an explosion aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, the first-ever nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, kills 27 people in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. A rocket accidentally detonated, destroying 15 planes and injuring more than 300 people.
FAMOUS DUOS (continued): • Meriwether Lewis was 29 years old and cocommander William Clark was 33 when they were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 to explore the Louisiana Purchase all the way to the Pacific coast. Lewis and Clark were both Virginia-born veterans of Ohio Valley Indian wars. Their expedition included more than 40 other men and their Shoshone guide Sacagawea as they wound their way up the Missouri River. Over a period of two years and four months, the group traveled over 8,000 miles, using a 55-foot-long keelboat and two smaller boats, all the while making maps and studying the rocks, soil, plants and wildlife they encountered. After the expedition, Jefferson appointed Lewis Governor of the Louisiana Territory. At age 35, on a journey to deliver his journals to a Washington, D.C., publisher, Lewis died from multiple gunshot wounds, generally accepted as a suicide, although some believe he was the victim of an assassin. Clark served as Governor of the Missouri Territory and finally as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. • Barbie and Ken were the creations of Ruth Handler, wife of the Mattel toy company cofounder. Ruth named the couple after her own children, introducing Barbie in 1959 and Ken in 1961. Barbie (full name Barbie Roberts) has had more than 125 careers, including architect, astronaut, doctor and racecar driver. Ken Carson, who has had at least 40 occupations, first appeared with a molded plastic haircut with felt hair. In 2004, Mattel announced a breakup of our favorite couple, implying Ken’s reluctance to get married, but rekindled the romance in 2006 in conjunction with a makeover for Ken. Barbara Handler Segal is now a 70-year-old Los Angeles mother of two. Her brother Ken passed away at age 50 in 1994 of a brain tumor.
Finished and Unfinished Special builds (319) 294-4805 Main Floor In Westdale Mall 2600 Edgewood Rd Cedar Rapids, Iowa One January my wife and I spent a vacation in the Great Smoky Mountains. We were eager to get to our chalet, but the weather wasn't the best that year. The radio said that snow and freezing rain were expected. Although apprehensive about the conditions we might run into, we drove on. Sure enough, we had gone only a short way into the mountains when we saw a sign: "Ice: 10 miles." Five miles farther on there was another: "Ice: 5 miles." The next one was: "Ice: 1/2 mile." We practically crept that half-mile. We came to the last sign. It was outside a small grocery. "Ice: 75 cents."

FAMOUS DUOS (continued): • Most baby boomers will recall learning from the popular “Dick and Jane” readers during their primary school years — about 60 million children in all used the books. The brother and sister pair first appeared in 1930, and by the 1950s, about 80 percent of first-graders were reading the series. Written by William Gray and Zerna Sharp, the books also featured sister Sally, Spot the dog and Puff the cat. If you happen to have a first edition of one of the books, it’s worth as much as $200. • Daryl Hall and John Oates met in 1967 while attending Philadelphia’s Temple University. It wasn’t until seven years later that they achieved their first hit “She’s Gone.” Their first of six Billboard No. 1 songs came along in 1977, “Rich Girl,” followed up with “Kiss on My List.” The pair has racked up 34 singles on the Hot 100 charts and seven platinum albums, with sales of more than 60 million records.

• The German Grimm Brothers introduced Hansel and Gretel in an 1812 publication. The brother and sister were the children of a poor woodcutter who surrendered to his second wife’s plot to abandon the young pair in the woods. Wandering in the forest, the children happened upon a cottage made of gingerbread cakes, home to a cannibalistic witch. • Mickey and Minnie Mouse became an item in 1929 in the cartoon “Plane Crazy,” just four months after Mickey’s debut in “Steamboat Willie.” They went on to appear in 73 cartoons together. Their friend Donald Duck was single from the time of his 1934 premiere in “The Wise Little Hen” until Daisy Duck’s appearance in 1940’s “Mr. Duck Steps Out.” The sailor-suited Donald is the uncle of triplets Huey, Dewey and Louie, while Daisy is the aunt of their counterparts April, May and June Duck. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver ● It was British author Douglas Adams, best known for writing the science-fiction comedy series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” who made the following sage observation: “Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.”

About 21,000 tons of steel and 400,000 rivets were required, and 3,826,000 bricks cover the exterior of its 77 floors. Automobile-themed ornaments were chosen to highlight the exterior. The corners of the 61st floor feature stainless steel eagles, replicas of a 1929 Chrysler hood ornament. The ornamentation on the 31st floor’s corners copied the radiator caps of that year’s model fashioned into gargoyles.
COUCH THEATER -DVD PREVIEWS By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Ides of March” (R) -- Ryan Gosling and George Clooney stage a battle of the jawlines in this Clooney-directed political drama. Gosling plays Stephen, a young but experienced media man working on Clooney’s Democratic presidential campaign. When an old associate (Paul Giamatti) tries to woo Stephen onto another campaign, a series of scandals and disillusioning revelations put the young politico in the center of the controversy. The election year and the politics at the heart of the campaign matter less than the character drama. The true conflict is in seeing Stephen’s mantra -- that integrity and best intentions always win -- put to the test. Clooney’s direction steers the movie toward straightforwardness, but skirts around easy answers. “Courageous” (PG-13) -- This latest film from Sherwood Pictures follows up on its previous success with 2008’s “Fireproof” -- a sincere story about Christian characters struggling with life’s

• The Chrysler family sold the building in 1947. The skyscraper remained the auto company’s corporate headquarters from its opening until the mid-1950s. The building has changed ownership numerous times since then. The Abu Dhabi Investment council is now the principal owner of the property. • The Chrysler Building now ranks as the third tallest building in New York City and the 48th tallest in the world. It still holds the honor of the world’s tallest brick building. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1976. problems without miracles. This time, instead of a fireman with a failing marriage, four cops need help being better fathers. The film features capable performances and direction, but the message of the film is the real dividing line between audiences who love it and audiences who feel annoyed. The film wears its evangelical heart on its sleeve, and the longwinded preaching can please believers as much as it irks others. For a real movie depicting real Christians learning about faith and fatherhood, “Courageous” is your pick. For an accessible drama that examines the complexities of some real-life problems, look somewhere else. “Traffic” (R) (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] -This grittier-than-thou crime thriller released in 2000 uses a diverse set of characters to flip over the rock of the War on Drugs and see the mess beneath. It brought in four Oscars, including one for best director (Steven Soderbergh) and another for its script. Characters on either side of the border struggle personally and professionally with the demons of the drug trade. Soderbergh uses an up-close and visceral perspective, which is reciprocated by great performances from Michael Douglas and Benicio del Toro. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Ground was broken in September of 1928 in the midst of a fierce competition to build the world’s tallest skyscraper. Three shifts worked around the clock seven days a week, setting a pace of completion of four floors per week. Not one worker died during the building’s construction.
• The building was officially completed on May 27, 1930, at a cost of $20 million. Soaring to a height of 1,047 feet, it was the world’s tallest building at its completion, as well as the first man-made structure to exceed a height of 1,000 feet. It surpassed the Eiffel Tower, which had been the world’s tallest structure for 40 years, by 48 feet (14.6 m). Just 11 months after the Chrysler Building’s completion, it was outdone by the Empire State Building by more than 200 feet.

• In 1928, Walter Chrysler had built his company into the second largest producer of automobiles in the world, and he felt it was time for a company headquarters that reflected that status. Rather than building in Detroit like other automakers, he opted to move to New York City, where he obtained the property at 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. Because Chrysler wanted his children to inherit the building, the Chrysler Corporation paid for none of the construction, with the entire bill footed by Walter Chrysler himself.
• The walls of the elegant lobby are red Moroccan marble, while the floors are yellow marble. The elevator doors are inlaid with Japanese ash and American walnut, and the lobby is decorated with various Egyptian motifs. A 110-foot ceiling mural features a likeness of the building with planes flying around it, as well as painted scenes from the Chrysler plant assembly line.
