THE WHITE HOUSE (continued): • L’Enfant called the area the Capital City. To Thomas Jefferson it was Federal Town, while Washington referred to it as Federal City. The commissioners who were appointed to obtain the property gave the name of Washington to the city. • The name of James Hoban is not a well-known one, but his accomplishment lives on. When Thomas Jefferson organized a competition to obtain the best design for the President’s House, a striking entry was submitted by this Irish immigrant. Jefferson himself presented his own design; however, he and seven others were outdone by Hoban, who went on to design many other public buildings on the Eastern seaboard. • The first cornerstone of the house was laid in the fall of 1792, and it took until late 1798 to complete the exterior. While George Washington supervised the construction, he never lived in it. John Adams was elected president in 1797, and he and his wife Abigail were the first residents, moving in when the home was nearly complete in 1800. They only lived there four months before Adams’ successor, Jefferson, took residence. • Only one U.S. president has had his wedding in the White House. In 1886, Grover Cleveland married 21-year-old Frances Folsom in the Blue Room, and made her the youngest First Lady in U.S. history. Seven years later, she gave birth to daughter Esther, the only child of a president ever to be born in the house. But Esther wasn’t the first baby to be born there. That honor belonged to Thomas Jefferson’s grandson, born to Jefferson’s daughter during his term of office.

THE WHITE HOUSE (continued): • The East Room has served many different purposes during its history. Abigail Adams used it as a laundry room. During the Civil War, it served as quarters for Union troops. Years later, Jackie Kennedy used it as a theater for the performing arts. It was also where the bodies of both Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy lay in state following their assassinations. • Over the years, presidents have added what were deemed necessities to their home. Millard Fillmore established a permanent library during his term in the mid-1850s. He was also responsible for the installation of the first bathtub with running water. William Howard Taft, portly at nearly 350 pounds, had a custom-made bathtub installed, large enough to hold four average men. Electric lights were put in during the term of Benjamin Harrison, but neither he nor his wife ever touched the switches. They were both afraid of being shocked and called their servants when they wanted the lights turned on or off. • Teddy Roosevelt moved in with six children and found the home too small to contain them. He ordered the construction of a temporary building for additional office space for the staff. The greenhouses and conservatories were torn down to make room for this temporary addition that turned out to be permanent. Today it is known as the West Wing. • A Christmas Eve, 1929, electrical fire severely damaged the West Wing during Herbert Hoover’s administration. The roof had to be replaced and the charred interiors rebuilt, and in the restoration process, air-conditioning was added.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver

≈ It was 19th-century French author Pierre-Jules Renard who made the following sage observation about his craft: “Literature is an occupation in which you have to keep proving your talent to people who have none.” ≈ Guinness, that notoriously dark and bitter Irish brew, contains fewer calories than skim milk or orange juice. Stout for breakfast, anyone? ≈ Lawmakers in Phoenix once saw fit to make it illegal to walk through a hotel lobby while wearing spurs. ≈ It’s hard to imagine what life was like before the widespread availability of refrigeration, isn’t it? Some people have decided to find out -- and you might be surprised at how many. Although 99.5 percent of all households in the United States have a refrigerator, that still means that more than 1.5 million households are fridge-less. ≈ Swedish chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel, famed inventor of dynamite and originator of the Nobel Prizes, could speak five languages fluently by the time he was 17 years old. ≈ Those who study such things claim that the hair on people of European descent tends to whorl in a counterclockwise fashion, while on most Japanese people it whorls in the opposite direction. ≈ It seems that Warren G. Harding, the 29th president of the United States, was something of a gambler. During one hand of poker he bet the White House china -- and lost it. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Take a cowboy, a construction worker, a sailor, an Indian, a traffic cop and a biker, put them all together, and what do you have? The Village People, of course! Join Tidbits for a look at one of music’s most interesting combinations. • As French composer and music producer Jacques Morali strolled the streets of New York City’s Greenwich Village, he happened on to Felipe Rose dancing in an American Indian costume. Rose was of Puerto Rican and Lakota Sioux descent and worked part-time as a bartender, dancing as he served drinks. Morali conceived the idea of a musical group made up of individuals from the Village’s various social groups. While attending a Broadway production of The Wiz, he found his police officer, Victor Willis. Victor’s friend Alex Briley was commissioned to play the G.I., and a Brooklyn Tunnel toll collector, Glenn Hughes, was added as the biker. Morali placed a classified ad announcing auditions for the other slots, calling for “Macho Types with Mustache,” and the Village People were born. • Randy Jones was the group’s original cowboy, and was the only member to ever actually live in Greenwich Village, where he has resided since 1975. Although he was replaced in 1980, Jones made Entertainment Weekly’s list of Top Pop Culture Cowboys, along with John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Roy Rogers. • During the disco era, the Village People released ten albums and numerous singles, selling more than 65 million recordings. During their heyday, Madonna and Joan Rivers appeared as the group’s opening act in Las Vegas. Most people remember “Macho Man” and “In the Navy,” but the long-enduring “Y.M.C.A.” is by far the group’s biggest hit. • After visiting New York’s 23rd Street Y.M.C.A., Jacques Morali was inspired to write about it and composed the number in about 20 minutes. Victor Willis came up with the words, and the horns, strings and driving beat were added. This 1978 tune has been performed as a group dance everywhere from dances in the school gym to wedding receptions to sporting events. The New York Yankees began using it as a middle-of-thefifth inning break in 1996. The Village People themselves led the crowd through the motions at the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star game in Yankee Stadium. • “Y.M.C.A.” is even popular with politicians. In 2004, at a summit with Asian foreign leaders, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell entertained the dignitaries with a karaoke version at the closing ceremonies. • As the Village People were basking in the 26 weeks of “Y.M.C.A.” on the Billboard charts, Hideki Saijo recorded his own Japanese version entitled “Young Man” and hit Number One on the Japanese charts. • Only three of today’s Village People are the originals – American Indian chief Felipe Rose, construction worker David Hodo, and soldier Alex Briley. The current traffic cop, Ray Simpson, has been around 30 years, cowboy Jeff Olson since 1980, and biker Eric Anzalone since 1995. Anzalone replaced Glenn Hughes who died of lung cancer and was buried in his leathers per his request. • Stop by 6529 Hollywood Boulevard along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and you can view the Village People’s star, located between the stars of Liberace and Betty Grable. Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Genealogy Vacations It doesn’t take much for my genealogy bug to rise again, and I’m not the only one. What’s re-ignited my interest this time is a quotation I found online: To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root. Going on vacation to hunt for our roots is becoming very popular among seniors, but a genealogy vacation isn’t something you can do on the spur of the moment. You need to plan far ahead. For a successful trip, have a goal in mind, whether it’s to research a certain person or just to see what other family information you can find. Look into genealogy-specific tours, especially if you’re going to a foreign country. Translators will come in handy, and they’ll know details about the area. Check the genealogy tours by European Focus (www.europeanfocus. com). It will even do the photography for you! Elderhostel, now called Exploritas (www. exploritas.org), sponsors trips around the world. Also consider a visit to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. If you go, take copies of all of your records, not the originals. That name jotted on a scrap of paper might be the key to your research. Also, take along two digital cameras with extra memory. Take a handful of memory sticks and put the photos on those as duplicates. Mail them back to yourself, just in case. If it’s not possible for you to travel, or if your family tree is already completed, there are still ways for you to stay active in genealogy and help others at the same time. Consider teaching a how-to genealogy class. Hunt for genealogy books at flea markets and yard sales. Look at the index: Is your family listed? When complete records are unavailable, sometimes it’s enough to go visit the general area where our ancestors once lived.

A VISIT TO CANADA

How much do you really know about the ten provinces and three territories known as Canada? Tidbits takes a short visit to the place that takes its name from the Iroquois word, kanata, translating to “village” or “settlement.” • Canada is the second largest country in the world with an area of 3,855,103 square miles (9,984,670 square kilometers). Only Russia is larger, almost double Canada’s size. Six time zones span across its length, including the unusual Newfoundland Time Zone, which is an hour and a half ahead of New York City and Toronto and 30 minutes ahead of the other Maritime Provinces. • It’s a nice place to visit, and you might want to live there! The United Nations Human Development Index ranks Canada at the top of the list for highest quality of life in the world. Vancouver, British Columbia ranks as number one (tied with Zurich, Switzerland) for the highest quality of life of any city. Canada has the fourth lowest population density in the world. • From coast to coast, Canada stretches for 5,500 miles (8,850 km). If you want to drive the longest highway in the world, start in Victoria, British Columbia, and drive east along the Trans-Canada Highway for 4,860 miles (7,821 km) until you reach St. John’s, Newfoundland. • Part of the border between the United States and Canada is formed by the magnificent Niagara Falls. Horseshoe Falls, at a height of 173 feet (53 meters), is located entirely in Canada. The water is 184 feet (56 meters) deep at the base of Horseshoe Falls. American Falls is entirely within the U.S., and is 182 feet (56 meters) high. About 37 million gallons of water roar over the two falls every minute, with 90 percent of that amount thundering over Horseshoe Falls. About 20 million people visit Niagara Falls every year, and more camera film is sold there than anywhere else in the world. • Visitors to Edmonton, Alberta, can make a stop by North America’s largest shopping center, the West Edmonton Mall. Covering about 48 city blocks, the mall was the world’s largest for 23 years before being passed by in 2004. Shoppers can browse in more than 800 stores, choose among 100 places to eat, or splash in the indoor wave pool at the world’s largest indoor waterpark, covering 4.9 acres. An indoor lake houses a life-size replica of Christopher Columbus’ ship, the Santa Maria. • Canada’s province of Newfoundland is home to the oldest European settlement in North America. On the feast day of St. John the Baptist in 1497, explorer John Cabot discovered Newfoundland, which probably accounts for the name of the new settlement founded there, St. John’s. • The eastern coast of Canada is closer to London than it is to its own western coast. • You had better behave yourself in Rodney, Ontario, or you might just end up in what is believed to be the world’s smallest jail. It measures 14.8 ft. x 17.7 ft., a total of about 270 square feet. • Famous Canadians include Michael J. Fox, Dan Aykroyd, Paul Anka, Morely Safer, Sarah McLachlan, and Donald and Kiefer Sutherland. What do urine samples and Canadian beer have in common? The taste.

♥ On April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln succumbs to a gunshot wound inflicted by an assassin the night before, and he is pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m. During the autopsy, Mary Lincoln sent the surgeons a note requesting they cut a lock of Lincoln’s hair for her. ● On April 14, 1912, just before midnight in the North Atlantic, the RMS Titanic fails to divert its course from an iceberg, ruptures its hull and begins to sink. The Titanic’s hull was divided into 16 compartments that were presumed to be watertight, and the ship was considered unsinkable. ● On April 17, 1964, the Ford Mustang is officially unveiled by Henry Ford II at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The car debuted that same day, and almost 22,000 Mustangs were immediately snapped up by buyers. Named for a World War II fighter plane, the first models carried a starting price tag of around $2,300. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Start “NATIONAL” WORDS (continued): here • French: Chefs know what it means to “french” a food item. It’s a verb that means to cut into thin strips, like, well, french fries. (And yes, that’s how the finger-friendly potato dish took its name.) Green beans are another item commonly prepared in this manner.

• Maltese: These tiny spaniels are easy to identify thanks to their long, silky coats. The American Kennel Club groups them with other “Toy Dogs” like Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers. Feline aficionados also use the term Maltese to describe cats that have a similarly silky, grayblue coat.

• Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. • Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Paid for by U.S. Census Bureau. Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States!
