PETS (continued): • African Gray parrots are said to be so smart that they can make up their own sentences. For example, one Gray, named Baby, knew his owner’s name and heard people ask the owner if she was leaving for work. He also heard her tell the kids to go to school. He put it all together and said, “Mom, go to work.” • Dalmatian puppies are born pure white, without their distinctive spots. It’s only when they start to grow that their black or brown spots begin to appear. • A dog’s whiskers are touch-sensitive hairs called vibrissae. They are found on the muzzle, above the eyes and below the jaws, and can actually sense tiny changes in airflow. • According to a recent survey, the most popular name for a dog is Max. Other popular names include Molly, Sam, Zach and Maggie. • An American Animal Hospital Association poll showed that 33 percent of dog owners admit that they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave messages on an answering machine while away. • According to ancient Greek literature, when Odysseus arrived home after an absence of 20 years disguised as a beggar, the only one to recognize him was his aged dog Argos, who wagged his tail at his master and then died. • An estimated 1 million dogs in the United States have been named the primary beneficiary in their owner’s will. • At the end of the Beatles’ song “A Day in the Life,” an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, was recorded by Paul McCartney for his Shetland sheepdog.

would like to thank everyone involved with our programs. With the help of many volunteers, our Annual Easter Egg Hunt was another success for many families with kids. The photo above will soon be our new Center to hold after school activities for children to help provide a safe place to interact with others. We will also be able to serve the homeless and those in need a weekday breakfast. This location is at 1445 Mt. Vernon Road SE, Cedar Rapids IA 52403. If you would like to help out with getting this facility operational and or help with the ongoing expenses to sustain our long term goal as a Community Youth Center.
We have many programs throughout the year that we need volunteers to help organize and participate to make these events great. If you would like to learn more about how you can help, please contact Henry at: (319) 329-8841

"Wonderful!" says the preacher, "but what happens if you pull both strings?" "I fall off my perch, you stupid fool!" screeched the parrot. DC’s

On April 12, 1961, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin shocked the world when he became the first human to travel into space in Vostok 3KA-2 (Vostok 1). • After the space flight, Gagarin became an instant, worldwide celebrity, touring widely to promote the Soviet achievement. He proved quite adept at handling the publicity. • Gagarin received so much fan mail the Russian authorities gave him his own zip code, Moscow 705. • Like John Glenn, Gagarin was considered too valuable to his country to risk in another space flight and was grounded from future space missions. Gagarin eventually became deputy training director of Star City, the Russian equivalent of Cape Kennedy and Johnson Space Center combined. • On March 27, 1968, Gagarin died in a MiG-15 UTI Russian fighter plane on a routine training flight near Kirzhach, Russia. • Contrary to popular belief, the moon does have an atmosphere. It is very thin. If you took all of the molecules in one cubic centimeter of atmosphere from the moon and lined them up, they would fit inside the period of this sentence. • The U.S.S.R. captured the first photo of the moon taken from space in 1959. The image was of the dark side of the moon. • The first spacecraft to send back pictures of the far side of the moon was Luna 3 in October 1959. The photographs covered about 70 percent of the moon’s far side. • In China, the dark shadows forming a face are known as “the toad in the moon,” not the “man in the moon.” The toad is considered one of the five poisons of yin. It is believed that eclipses occur when the “toad in the moon” tries to swallow the moon itself. • The temperature on the moon reaches 243° F (117 C) at midday on the lunar equator. At night, the temperature falls to -261° F (-163 C). • The first U.S. flag on the moon was deployed by Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin during their historic EVA on July 20, 1969 • The footprints left by the Apollo astronauts will not erode since there is no wind or water on the moon. The footprints should last at least 10 million years. • Astronaut Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon with his left foot. • The Apollo 13 Mission was planned as a lunar landing mission but was aborted en route to the moon after about 56 hours of flight due to loss of service module cryogenic oxygen and consequent loss of capability to generate electrical power, to provide oxygen and to produce water. It was later made into an awardwinning movie starring Tom Hanks. • Opposites attract? Not on the moon. The moon has no global magnetic field. • Due to its size and composition, the moon is sometimes classified as a terrestrial “planet” along with Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. • The last man to fly in space alone was Apollo 17 command module pilot Ron Evans, who circled the moon alone while astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt went to the surface.

● On April 23, 1859, William Byers distributes the first newspaper ever published in the frontier boomtown of Denver. Working with a hand press in the attic of a local saloon, Byers printed and distributed the first edition of The Rocky Mountain News, beating the first release of competitor The Cherry Creek Pioneer by only 20 minutes. ● On April 19, 1876, a Wichita, Kan., commission votes not to rehire policeman Wyatt Earp (of O.K. Corral fame) after he beats up a candidate for county sheriff. For much of his life, Earp worked in law enforcement, but his own allegiance to the rule of law was conditional at best. ● On April 21, 1930, a fire at an Ohio prison kills 320 inmates, some of whom burn to death when they are not unlocked from their cells. The prison, built to hold 1,500 people, was almost always overcrowded. At the time of the 1930 fire, there were 4,300 prisoners living in the jail.
