OVER THE MOON (continued): • The Honeymooners first debuted in 1955. Jackie Gleason famously portrayed Ralph Kramden in the series. But did you know his real name was Herbert Walton Gleason Jr.? Gleason made famous the catchphrase “Bang! Zoom!” and threatened to send his wife Alice “right to the moon!” The comedic shtick has been parodied by modern comedies, including “Family Guy.” Did you know there is a vintage clothing line in Roscoe, New York, called “Right To The Moon Alice”? • Buzz Aldrin is known for many things. He was the second man to walk on the moon, and he has dedicated his life to promoting space exploration. 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, and to commemorate the event, Aldrin teamed up with Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones to make “The Rocket Experience,” his rap debut and single. Proceeds from the song go to ShareSpace, a non-profit organization founded by Buzz in 1998. • A few more lesser known facts about Aldrin: It’s strange but true; Buzz’s mother, Marion Aldrin, was named Marion Moon before she married! Buzz Lightyear, from the animated classic “Toy Story,” was named for Aldrin. One more for the record books: Buzz was born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. but officially changed his name to Buzz in 1988. The moniker came from his older sister who pronounced the word brother as “buzzer.” • Does Mare Tranquillitatis mean anything to you? If you took a Latin class, you know that it means Sea of Tranquility. However, if you’re a space buff, you might know that it is the landing sight of the Apollo 11 lunar module. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their famous steps in the Mare Tranquillitatis, making it a famous landmark in American history on July 20, 1969. EAGLES CLUB

The sea, if you hadn’t guessed, isn’t actually a sea but a maria, which is one of the many dark spots we see on the surface of earth’s moon. It’s location will look different depending on which portion of the world you’re in, so be sure to look it up in your local library or favorite search engine. • Rabbit or man? This depends where you’re from. Many Asian cultures believe the dark marias on the surface of the moon form the shape of a rabbit. There was a time in England when the shapes were believed to be an old witch carrying a bundle of sticks on her back. Some Muslim cultures believe the name of Muhammed’s son is written on the moon, as Ali would be there to reflect the teachings of Muhammed (the sun) after Muhammed was gone. There is even a part of South East India that believes the face of stillliving guru Sathya Sai Baba can be seen in the

• Dr. Eugene Shoemaker was a well-known astronomer and astrogeologist in his lifetime. At one point, he was considered as a candidate for an Apollo lunar mission. He also co-discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. However, Dr. Shoemaker is also notably the only human being whose mortal remains have been laid to rest on the moon. A capsule containing his ashes was sent to the moon aboard the Lunar Prospector on July 31, 1999.

Monday,• In “More English Fairy Tales” by Joseph Jacobs, there is a tale called The Dead Moon (or The Buried Moon) June 15th about the moon. After hearing that monsters came out on nights when she didn’t shine, the moon came down & find out if this was true. She fell into a bog and June 29th to was trapped. While struggling, her hood kept falling 6:30pm in front of her face, causing her light to flicker. A
passing man saw the flashing light in the distance and it warned him of the bog and the monsters. Because dart she was trapped in a bog and not in the sky, the moon tournament stopped rising for a long time. The people wondered what had happened to her. It was a wise woman who $100 Added told the people where to find the buried moon, and at 501 the wise woman’s advice, the people freed the moon.

system, but what’s the largest? That would be Ganymede, a satellite of Jupiter. Ganymede is named after a character in Greek mythology. He was a hero and a Trojan prince. Ganymede the moon was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, exactly 400 years ago this past January 10th. One more neat fact: Did you know that the red giant has 63 confirmed moons in all?

• It’s official! As of September 2009, water was discovered on the moon. But don’t rush to get your bathing suits for the first swimming pool on the moon; our satellite is still drier than any dessert on earth. However, it has been discovered that there are very small traces of water on the moon, and that is an advancement for the ages.

After the Americans went to the Moon, Leonid Brezhnev announced that the Soviets would be sending a man to the Sun. The engineers objected. "If you send a man to the Sun, he will burn up!" "What do you think I am, stupid?" he replied. "We'll send him at night!"

• What exactly is a blue moon? Every calendar year, there are approximately twelve full moons, but because the moon cycles every 28 days and doesn’t fit into our monthly pattern, every 2.7 years there is an extra, thirteenth full moon in the year - a blue moon. So, the saying “once in a blue moon” really does mean something that doesn’t happen very often as a blue moon only happens about every 2.7 years. The next blue moon will occur this year on November 21, 2010, but the next one after that won’t be until August 21, 2013.

If you’re like much of America, you enjoy watching “American Idol” every spring. This week, Tidbits takes a look at some of the winners of years past and gives you an update on where they are now. • We first heard the name Justin Guarini back in the summer of 2002 during the first season of “American Idol.” Idol was originally scheduled during the summer as a replacement show. It first aired on Fox, and Season One is the only season not to air from January to May. Justin was runner-up to Kelly Clarkson in the final episode of that inaugural season. These days, you can find Guarini on the TV Guide Network hosting “Idol Tonight” and “Idol Wrap Up,” as well as providing live coverage of the Grammy and Emmy Awards. Guarini, a Columbus, Georgia, native, married Reina Capodici on September 26, 2009, and continues to work on his career. He has appeared on the “Today Show,” “Larry King Live,” the Style Channel and many more as a returning commentator. • Speaking of first season favorites, we can’t talk about Justin without talking about winner Kelly Clarkson. After her win on Season One of “American Idol,” Clarkson sky rocketed to super stardom and is still releasing hit singles. Her most recent album, “All I Ever Wanted” (2009) is the fourth of her albums to date. Clarkson appeared with Guarini in 2003’s “From Justin to Kelly “and has also had acting roles in television’s “American Dreams” and “Reba.” The 27 year old isn’t slowing down, either. She has won two Grammy Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards and four American Music Awards and has continued touring for her “All I Ever Wanted” tour since the beginning of the year. What’s next for Clarkson? We’ll have to wait and see, but we’re sure Idol’s first winner will continue to wow us with her career. • Another Idol alumni who rose quickly to stardom was Season Four winner Carrie Underwood. An Oklahoma native, Underwood released her first album just one short year after she won Idol back in 2004. She was one of the biggest debuts in country music in recent years, and her albums have continuously produced hit singles on both country and pop charts. Underwood has won four Grammy Awards, 14 American Music Awards and five Billboard Music Awards and just from the release of three albums! Looks like Miss Underwood has many things yet to show us, too! • The state of Alabama has played a key role in producing some “American Idol” favorites, included Season Five winner Taylor Hicks. Hicks isn’t the only Alabama native to gain attention through the show. Season Two brought the world’s attention to the big, cuddly teddy bear Ruben Studdard, a Birmingham native. Ruben was followed by Diana DeGarmo in 2004 and Taylor Hicks in 2006, both also Birmingham natives. There was also Huntsville’s, Bo Bice in 2005. Studdard and Hicks were the only two Alabama natives to win the show, although DeGarmo and Bice were both runners-up in their respective seasons. • The sixth season brought around Jordin Sparks, a smiling girl who rose to fame when she won “American Idol” in 2007. Sparks, a Phoenix, Arizona, native, is the daughter of former NFL quarterback Phillippi Sparks. To date, Sparks is the youngest winner of American Idol; she was 17 when she won. Something you might not know about Sparks, she actually auditioned twice for the show. She was also the opening act for the Jonas Brothers in the North American section of their 2009 World Tour.

Scammers’ New Weapon: Health Care Reform It never takes long for scammers to jump into new areas of fraud. Now, with health-care-reform legislation, they have a whole new way to try to get money out of the pockets of everyday people. Even if you already have Medicare, you’re still not safe from the scammers. Here’s what they’ve been caught doing already: • Selling fake policies door to door or on the phone. • Selling “limited enrollment” policies. Those don’t exist. • Selling fake medical discount cards. • Sending fake e-mails and doing phony online ads, with toll-free numbers to call. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has sent letters to insurance commissioners and attorney general's in each state, plus Health Care Fraud Prevention & Enforcement Action Teams (HEAT), warning them of the problem. She’s also notified the Senior Medicare Patrol Project -- senior volunteers who advise other seniors on how to detect fraud in Medicare. As an example, if you receive medical goods you didn’t order, such as special equipment you don’t need -- but that Medicare will probably have to pay for -- the Patrol can help investigators get to the bottom of it. But it’s up to us individually to make sure we don’t become a scam statistic. If you already have Medicare, you’ll be notified by mail if there are any necessary changes. Call Medicare to doublecheck. If you don’t have Medicare yet but get a call or mail saying you need to buy a special policy, call your own insurance company to ask if there are any changes you need to know about. To keep up with the new health-care changes, you can read the reports at healthreform.gov. Put “seniors” in the search box and look for “America’s Seniors and Health Insurance Reform.”

There are several conspiracy theories surrounding the death of America’s sixteenth President Abraham Lincoln. In this article, Tidbits highlights these theories as well as other fascinating facts. • Our first conspiracy is baffling and is one many might not have heard of: the theory that Andrew Johnson was involved. There was a purported letter from Wilkes left for Johnson at his residence in a Washington D.C. hotel. It is said that even Mary Todd Lincoln believed Johnson was involved in the murder of her husband and members of Congress had an official Assassination Committee formed to connect Johnson to the murder, though no incriminating evidence was ever found. • In some versions, this theory continues further to include the actual convicted conspirators not just as a fall back, but as partners in crime with Johnson in the murder of Lincoln. This list of conspirators includes the convicted and executed, including Mary Surratt, the only female tried in the assassination and the first woman to be executed by the federal government. Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s Secretary of War, is also later implicated in a book by Otto Eisenschiml. In actuality, Stanton was loyal to the president and stayed by his side as he slowly died in the Petersen House across the street from Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. Stanton famously uttered the line “Now he belongs to the ages,” when Lincoln finally passed away the morning after he was shot. • Other theories point to a grand conspiracy formed by the Confederacy. Not only does this theory pin Lincoln’s assassination on the South, it also claims the Confederates planned to blow up the White House. This theory claims that Booth, when he found out the mission to blow up the White House had failed, took matters into his own hands by assassinating Lincoln in Ford’s Theater. • Robert Redford’s film “The Conspirator” is about Mary Surratt’s role in the murder of Lincoln. The film has an all-star cast, and is set in Washington D.C. in the spring of 1865. However, the movie wasn’t filmed anywhere near Washington D.C. Redford chose scenic Savannah, Georgia, to represent 1865 Washington D.C., and locals of and tourists to Savannah were privy to Redford’s movie sets from October to December of 2009. Scenes of Surratt’s boarding house were filmed at a residence on the corner of Barnard and Taylor Streets, where cobblestone streets were covered with dirt and lined with horse drawn carriages. Surratt’s actual boarding house is currently a Chinese restaurant named “Wok and Roll,” and as of August 2009, is included on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. • Most historians today agree that the conspirators originally planned on kidnapping the President instead of actual murder. It was only after the South surrendered to the North that Booth and the conspirators turned to assassination. • Did you know there were even plots to kidnap Lincoln after his death? The 1876 plot was to steal Lincoln’s body from its tomb and hold it for a hefty ransom. The plot was ultimately foiled, and the villains caught, but they got so far as to actually make it into the tomb where Lincoln’s body was kept. Because of this, Lincoln’s casket was moved to a muddy grave in a room beneath the actual tomb. They dug a hole, buried the president’s casket and covered the ground with some lumber. The president remained here until 1901, when his remains, and those of his family, were permanently laid to rest in a rebuilt tomb.

• Greece’s Parthenon is a famous ruin, but many people today don’t realize that it wasn’t time that caused the destruction of the structure. In 1687, the Ottoman Turks occupied the Acropolis and used the Parthenon to store gunpowder. A mortar fired by the attacking Venetians hit the building and ignited the gunpowder, causing much of the widespread damage we see today. • Although Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, those who study such things say that there are 170 languages spoken in that country, most of them known well only by the indigenous people who grew up speaking them. • When city officials in New Orleans are estimating the crowds that turn out for Mardi Gras, they use the sanitation department’s figures on how much garbage was removed during the festival.
• England’s King Richard I, known popularly as the Lionheart, didn’t actually live in England; his residence was in Aquitaine, in the southwestern part of France. He didn’t speak English, either. • The next time you’re at a dance in Utah, remember not to get too close to your partner; in that state, by law, daylight must be visible between partners. • Thought for the Day: “The nuclear arms race is like two sworn enemies standing waist deep in gasoline, one with three matches, the other with five.” -- Carl Sagan (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc. Thought for the week: Did mother nature cause the flooding in Nashville or did man? The 1938 flood act would have protected Iowa in 2008 if the politicians would have left well enough alone. Consider draining the Coralville revisor during the winter and Iowa city would have stayed dry.

“NATIONAL” WORDS (continued): 812 6TH ST. SW. Cedar Rapids • French: Chefs know what it means to “french” a food item. It’s a verb that means to cut into thin strips, like, well, french fries. (And yes, that’s how the finger-friendly potato dish took its name.) Green beans are another item commonly prepared in this manner.
