THE ARMY (continued): • The Canadian Forces, formed officially on Feb. 1, 1968, was the result of the unification and merging of the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian AirForce. • An unordered “shot heard around the world” that occurred on April 19, 1775, at Lexington Green near Boston quickly started the War for Independence. At this battle, the first in the Revolutionary War, eight Americans were killed and 10 wounded. • On June 14, 1775, Congress approved the raising of 10 companies of riflemen to enlist in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia until the end of the Revolutionary War. These troops were known as the Continental Army. • Even before an open treaty was signed between Colonial Americans fighting for independence and France, the French had secretly helped the cause of the Americans. France sent America money and army supplies and, in addition, able Frenchmen had come across the Atlantic to join the American army. The most noted of these was the Marquis de Lafayette. • By the end of the French and Indian War, a new weapon had appeared on the frontier in Pennsylvania and to the south, one far better suited to guerrilla warfare than the musket. This weapon was later to become known as the Kentucky rifle. • Congress established the U.S. Military Academy along the Hudson River, at West Point, New York, in 1802. • In the early 1900s, General Samuel Young became the army’s first Chief of Staff and the first aeronautical division was set up within its signal corps. • The “Star Spangled Banner” officially became the National Anthem in 1931.

hank You to everyone involved with the Cedar Rapids Police Department & Linn county Sheriff’s Canine Divisions fund-raising event that was held on May 22nd. With strong support from many varied businesses who donated their services and products made this third annual event a big success. There are many great causes that need similar help to fund the needs of their missions. Because the city and county canine are funded by private donations, our mission here is to help protect the citizens of Linn County by providing the K-9 services with the Police and Sheriff departments. An individual canine trained by 2-4 years of age serves 6-8 years. The successful candidate, typically coming from Czech Republic, Holland or Germany, is a Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah) shepherd. The Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) active canine division in its 13th year, began with one, initiated by John McDaniel. The Linn County Sheriff Department (LCSD) today has 2 dual purpose canine, specializing in explosive detection and narcotics, as well as protecting their handler if endangered. They need 2 new dogs. Two reasons canine are so important to deputies is immediate backup and absolute detainment. Often two man-patrol CRPD backup response may be 3-4 minutes, whereas the single patrolling Sheriff’s deputy backup response may be as much as 15 minutes.

With a canine, the single riding deputy has immediate on-site backup. Working canine actually detain the wrong-doer more effectively than a human officer with gun drawn. That wrong-doer has greater immediate response and respect of the canine threat than the officer. We as individuals, our communities, need to step up, supporting our own protection. The individuals of the canine division are a tremendous resource for our law enforcers. The well-serving canines, a lower department cost overall than full time human officers, excel in: • traffic stops • defense against terrorism • drug detection • detaining/holding people • burglaries • officer protection Basic veterinary care is donated by an unnamed local vet. Special needs arising have to be paid. Beyond initial costs, the greatest expense is food. A bag of food lasts about 1 month. All the dog food is donated by Nutro® Natural Choice®, and Pet’s Playhouse. The event on May 22nd generated $15,000.00. This was made possible by 60 plus bussiness’s who donated, the 50 plus volunteers that participated before, during and after the event, and the thousands of people who attended the event and donated graciously to help the officers continue this K-9 program.

Thank You, Mike and Sheri Hunt owner’s Pet’s Playhouse Continued support is needed. Please consider a donation to the K-9 Benefit fund. Donations can be sent to the Ohnward Bank & Trust at:1211 Edgewood Road SW Cedar Rapids, IA 52404

• In late 1944, in the wake of the allied forces’ successful D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, it seemed as if the Second World War was all but over. But on December 16, with the onset of winter, the German army launched a counteroffensive intended to cut through the Allied forces in a manner that would turn the tide of the war in Hitler’s favor. This was The Battle of the Bulge, where the courage and fortitude of the American Soldier was tested against great adversity. • It’s a hit. The U.S. Army announced on Dec. 12, 1957, that “The Army Goes Rolling Along” (“Caisson Song”) was to be verified as their official song.

• It was something “special.” In 1952 Colonel Aaron Bank and Colonel Russell Volckmann, both former OSS members, convinced Army officials of the need for unconventional warriors. Bank established this new organization’s headquarters at Fort Bragg, recruiting former OSS officers, airborne and ranger troops, and seasoned war veterans. This new group was dubbed Special Forces, a designation derived from the OSS whose operational teams in the field were given the same name in 1944.

● On June 27, 1844, Joseph Smith, the founder and leader of the Mormon religion, is murdered when an anti-Mormon mob breaks into a jail where he is being held in Carthage, Ill. Smith claimed in 1823 that he had been visited by a Christian angel named Moroni, who spoke to him of an ancient Hebrew text that had been lost for 1,500 years. ● On June 23, 1902, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft first registers “Mercedes” as a brand name, feeling that the non-German name might sell better in France. The famous Mercedes symbol, a three-point star, was registered as a trademark in 1909. ● On June 26, 1948, U.S. and British pilots begin airlifting food and supplies to Berlin after the city is isolated by a Soviet Union blockade. By July 15, an average of 2,500 tons of supplies was being flown into the city every day. ● On June 25, 1950, armed forces from communist North Korea smash into South Korea, setting off the Korean War. The United States quickly sprang to the defense of South Korea. More than 55,000 American troops were killed in the three-year conflict. ● On June 24, 1975, an Eastern Airlines jet crashes near John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, killing 115 people. The Boeing 727 was brought down by wind shear during severe thunderstorms with heavy winds and rain. Seven passengers and two flight attendants survived the fiery crash. ● On June 21, 1982, John W. Hinckley, Jr., who shot President Ronald Reagan, was found not guilty of attempted murder by reason of insanity. In the trial, Hinckley’s defense attorneys argued that their client had a pathological obsession with the 1976 film “Taxi Driver,” in which there is an attempt to assassinate a fictional senator. THE ARMY (continued): • Did you know that Army soldiers no longer roll up their sleeves? In order to ensure a more uniform look, the brass decided that the sleeves would no longer be worn rolled up, even in the summer. First, this had a practical reason as it helped reduce sun and other skin injuries. Second, it was all part of the Army’s current initiative to instill a warrior attitude in the soldiers of always being prepared for combat. Most infantry units had never authorized the sleeves to be rolled up. Lastly, the design of the new ACU’s made rolling up the sleeve extremely impractical. • The largest army component is the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), which executes the land defense of the U.S., provides military support to civil authorities, and trains, sustains, mobilizes and protects strategic land forces worldwide. • The U.S. Army has over 400,000 enlisted soldiers and 76,000 officers. • With headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., the U.S. Army Reserve consists of about 250,000 soldiers. It fields a large portion of the support staff, especially in civil affairs, engineering, transportation and maintenance. • The Army National Guard fields approximately 370,000 troops (not including Alaska, Hawaii and Guam). It can provide eight combat divisions, one armored cavalry regiment and 21 combat brigades. • The secretary of the Army is the civilian head of the United States Army and reports to the secretary of defense for operational authority. He is named by the president and approved by the Senate. • The Canadian Forces were heavily involved in World War II and the Korean War, but since then, from the 1950s on, Canadian soldiers have generally been used in peacekeeping missions, assisting the United Nations.

Willie Nelson began performing music as a child growing up in Abbott, Texas. After his father died and his mother ran away, Nelson and his sister Bobbie were raised by their grandparents, who encouraged both children to play instruments. It sure paid off in the long run, didn’t it? • In Willie’s younger days he was a door-to-door salesman. He eventually got a job at a radio station. By the time Willie graduated from school, he had his own radio show. • Nelson began playing professionally at age 10 and joined a Western swing band as a teenager. In the 1960s he moved to Nashville, where he became a successful songwriter.

• Although he didn’t become a major star until the mid-1970s, Willie Nelson spent much of his early years in the 1960s penning songs that became hits for established performers like Patsy Cine (“Crazy”) and Faron Young (“Hello Walls”). He also released a series of records on Liberty and RCA that earned him a small, but devoted, cult following.

• Willie’s first album for Columbia Records, “The Red Headed Stranger,” was a concept album about a preacher, featuring only his guitar and his sister’s Monday, piano. The label was reluctant to release it, but they June 15th relented, and it became a huge hit, thanks to Nelson’s cover of Roy Acuff’s Classic tune, “Blue Eyes & Crying in the Rain.”

The fuel can be burned without modification in diesel engines.

he released “Stardust,” an instant classic record that was a collection of pop standards.

• Willie has had well-known tax problems. When the IRS seized his possessions to sell at auction to collect money to pay his tax debt, many of Nelson’s fans bought his stuff and then gave it back to him. The only major possessions not seized were his guitar and his tour bus so he could earn a living.

THE

OOLONY IN N

WEDDINGS

Millions of brides and grooms say “I do” each year in America and Canada. That’s a lot of wedding cake! • Thrice a bridesmaid, never a bride is an old charm that can be broken by being a bridesmaid seven times.

• For centuries, the month of June has been the most popular choice for weddings, but the original reason for this might surprise you. During the 1400 and 1500s, May was the month in which the “annual bath” occurred. Yes, just as it sounds, back then people were only able to bathe thoroughly once each year. ● If you ever go to Rome, one of the sights that must be seen is the Trevi Fountain, the elaborate Baroque installment that was completed in 1762. According to legend, anyone who throws a coin in the fountain is ensured a return visit to Rome. This is, evidently, a popular tradition; every night approximately $3,500 is retrieved from the fountain. The money is used to fund a supermarket for the city’s needy.

● In this era of ubiquitous technology and instant communication through e-mail and text message, the average American still receives 1.5 personal letters each week. Of course, you have to weigh that against the 10.8 pieces of junk mail that arrive on a weekly basis. ● Due to the rising prices of the materials used to mint coins, it now costs 2 cents to manufacture every penny and 9 cents to make a nickel. ● In 2006, an Illinois police officer was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
