UNUSUAL SPORTS (continued): • Cheese rolling is a sport in England that takes place annually on Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire. This isn’t just any ordinary hill. Cooper’s Hill is so steep that it’s at a 70-degree angle in places. The sport involves a wheel of cheese that’s rolled down hill. The rules are simple: Run after the cheese, and try to be the one that has the cheese at the bottom of the hill. • Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian sport that was developed during the time of African slavery in Brazil. It’s actually a form of fighting and self-defense, but is done through music, incorporating rhythm and dance. A group of people gather in a circle and take turns getting in the center to spar. In modern times, there is usually no contact, but rather near misses as the sport is more about technique and style than it is about beating up your opponent. • Underwater hockey? You betcha. Invented in 1954, underwater hockey is exactly what the name implies, but this form of hockey is noncontact. There are two teams of 10 people, but only three from each team are in play at one time. All players wear snorkels and flippers while playing the game. Another difference between underwater and regular ice hockey is that the underwater stick is one foot (30 centimeters) long as opposed to four feet (1 meter) long. • If you think underwater hockey sounds tough, you haven’t seen underwater rugby. This is a sport with two teams of six players. The object is to get a ball filled with saltwater into a goal to score. The ball must never leave the water. Each team has six players in the water and six substitutes that can switch with a player at any time. A player in this game must have extreme endurance, speed, mobility and strength.

UNUSUAL SPORTS (continued): Disc golf or Frisbee golf has been around since the 1960s but has gained a lot of popularity since then. The rules are similar to golf in that it’s played on a course, the strokes are counted, and the lowest score wins. However, instead of a ball, the players use discs. Instead of a green with sand traps, the course is usually not groomed and may be out in the woods, or at least has wooded terrain. Instead of trying to get a ball in a hole, you try to get your disc into a metal basket. Unicycle hockey is like ice hockey or roller hockey but with unicycles instead of skates. Unlike ice hockey, there’s no physical contact with other players. Though there are unicycle hockey teams in the United States, Australia, Canada and other countries, there are only two countries that currently have national leagues: Germany and Great Britain. Curling was originally an outdoor sport that originated in 16th century Scotland, but it is now an indoor sport. Since 1998, curling has been an Olympic sport. Two teams of four people each throw polished granite stones down an alley of ice, and then their teammates can help the stones along by sweeping them down the alley with brooms. Scoring is calculated by the way that the stones are strategically placed, and for this reason it is often called “chess on ice.” Extreme croquet is closely related to lawn croquet, but the biggest difference between the two is that extreme croquet isn’t played in someone’s backyard. Instead it’s played in rough terrain. The rules are similar, but there are two wickets in extreme croquet as opposed to the single wicket in the backyard version of the game.

~ On Aug. 30, 31 B.C., Cleopatra, queen of Egypt and lover of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, takes her life following the defeat of her forces against Octavian, the future first emperor of Rome. Although Cleopatra had no Egyptian blood, she alone in her ruling house learned Egyptian. ~ On Aug. 31, 1888, Mary Ann Nichols, the first victim of London serial killer “Jack the Ripper,” is found murdered in Whitechapel’s Buck’s Row. On Nov. 7, after a month of silence, Jack took his fifth and final victim, Mary Kelly. In 1892, with no leads found and no more murders recorded, the Jack the Ripper file was closed. ~ On Sept. 1, 1983, Soviet jet fighters intercept a Korean Airlines passenger flight in Russian airspace and shoot the plane down, killing 269 passengers and crew members. The KAL flight had veered onto a course that was close to one being simultaneously flown by a U.S. spy plane. ~ On Sept. 2, 1996, Michael Jackson earns his 12th and final solo No. 1 with the R&B ballad “You Are Not Alone,” written by R. Kelly. A court in Belgium ruled in 2007 that Kelly had plagiarized “You Are Not Alone” from a Belgian song called “If We Can Start All Over.” ~ On Sept. 3, 1777, the American flag is flown in battle for the first time, during a Revolutionary War skirmish at Cooch’s Bridge, Maryland. The national flag, which became known as the “Stars and Stripes,” was based on the “Grand Union” flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776. ~ On Sept. 4, 1951, President Harry Truman’s opening speech before a conference in San Francisco is broadcast across the nation, marking the first time a television program was broadcast from coast to coast. ~ On Sept. 5, 1972, at the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, a group of Palestinian terrorists storms the Olympic Village apartment of the Israeli athletes, killing two and taking nine others hostage. The terrorists, known as Black September, demanded that Israel release more than 230 Arab prisoners being held in Israeli jails. Changes to Medicare If you’re about to sign up for Medicare, beware. Because of the new health reform laws, there are changes you need to research before you decide on your plans. Some highlights: With Medicare Advantage, next year there will be a cap on your out-of-pocket expenses for Medicare services. Plans won’t be allowed to charge higher copays for patients receiving services such as chemotherapy. The election period is going to change: You’ll be able to sign up for Advantage from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31 only, not during the first three months of the year as you previously could. Medigap has changes as well. Plans E, H and I have been replaced with Plans M and N. Hospice is covered as a core benefit. Plans K, L, and N will require you to pay for part of the Part B co-insurance and co-payments, but it could result in lower premiums. Plan K will cover 50 percent and Plan L will cover 75 percent of the costs. Those who have Part D, the drug plan, will get a 50 percent discount on brandname drugs when they reach the socalled doughnut hole. Starting next year, that gap will be gradually closed, a little each year, until 2020. If you plan to make changes during open enrollment this year, be careful because of the shortened enrollment period. There may be more changes coming later to the Advantage plan. On September 23, 1949, Bruce Springsteen was born, of course, “in the USA.” With his gruff but powerful vocals, the energetic singer has secured his spot on America’s list of rock superstars. • Springsteen was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and attended Freehold Borough High School. His father, Douglas Frederick Springsteen, was, amongst other things, a bus driver. • The first song a young Springsteen learned to play on the guitar was allegedly the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.” • In the late 1960s, Springsteen performed briefly in a power rock trio known as Earth, playing in clubs in New Jersey. • Also around that time, Springsteen acquired the nickname “The Boss.” While playing club gigs with a local band, one of his tasks was to collect the band’s nightly pay and distribute it amongst the members. But Springsteen has never liked the nickname, due to his dislike of bosses. • Springsteen’s E Street Band has roots in reality. The actual E Street runs northeast through the New Jersey shore town of Belmar. According to Springsteen lore, the band took its name from the street because original keyboard player David Sancious’ mother lived there and allowed the band to rehearse in her house. • The Boss meets the King? After a 1976 concert in Memphis, Springsteen went to Graceland at three in the morning, jumped the wall and ran to the front door. Security grabbed him before he could make it to the door and sent him packing. Knocking wouldn’t have done much good, anyway. Elvis was in Lake Tahoe at the time. • In May 1977, Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt went to an Elvis Presley concert in Philadelphia. A few days later Springsteen wrote “Fire,” and allegedly sent a demo of the song to Presley that summer, hoping he might cover it. Whether the tape got sent or not, Presley died that August, and Springsteen wound up giving “Fire” to Robert Gordon. Gordon’s version of the song was covered by the Pointer Sisters who made it a hit in 1979. • One of his most famous songs, “Thunder Road,” was inspired by the 1958 Robert Mitchum movie of the same name. • Springsteen has been listened to all over the world, and even in space. During a December 1999 flight of the space shuttle Discovery, his song “Rendezvous” was played as the crew’s wake-up call. It was the third day of the mission, and the crew was scheduled to rendezvous with the Hubble Space Telescope. • Springsteen inspires some pretty extreme acts of fandom. Recently, “No Retreat, No Surrender,” a “worst-to-first countdown of every album cut in Springsteen history” came out. In all, the creators of the list ranked and wrote about (sometimes at length) 200 songs. They ranked “Real Man” from the album “Human Touch” last and “Born to Run” first. • Springsteen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Bono of U2 gave the induction speech. When U2 was inducted in 2005, Springsteen gave their induction speech, returning the favor. • To date, Springsteen has sold more than 65 million albums (including CDs) in the United States and 120 million worldwide.

Allmendinger Wants to be “Top Guy” A.J. Allmendinger hasn’t enjoyed many NASCAR weekends as successful as the one he just completed in Watkins Glen, N.Y. The Los Gatos, Calif., native was highly successful in the Champ Car World Series, but the Sprint Cup Series has been a struggle since he joined Team Red Bull in 2007 and Richard Petty Motorsports in 2009. Allmendinger finished 24th in the 2009 Sprint Cup point standings and currently resides in 22nd place. Just days after Petty and Foster Gillett of RPM announced that Allmendinger’s contract as driver of the No. 43 Ford has been extended, he celebrated by finishing fourth in the Heluva Good at the Glen. His career best, by the way, was a third in the 2009 Daytona 500. “We are definitely not where we want to be ... right now, but I see the potential and want to keep building a team around me that continues to get better,” said Allmendinger, 28. “We want to reach a point where we compete for a win every weekend and hopefully, eventually, get a championship. That is the goal.” A championship is certainly a long way off, but Allmendinger doesn’t shy away from the task at hand. He said he talked to other teams, but decided to remain at RPM, in part, because of Kasey Kahne’s departure at season’s end. Allmendinger wants to be “the guy.” “Yeah, that was a big selling point,” he said. “I am ready to be a leader of this race team. It’s something that I thrive on and excites me every day to know that I can be the guy. I have the confidence in myself to know I can lead this team and represent it to the best of its abilities.” After finishing fourth at Watkins Glen, Allmendinger said, “The car was really strong all day. We didn’t have anything for the ‘42’ (Juan Montoya). He was on another planet. But for the others (runner-up Kurt Busch and third-place Marcos Ambrose), I felt like maybe we had something for them. “It was a solid day. It was a good day in the pits. We need to build on this. It’s really cool to sign a multi-year deal and have a great weekend.”

THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (MOUNTIES) Sitting straight atop majestic steeds in their bright red coats, the Mounties present an image that’s almost synonymous with Canada. • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began in 1873, when the Canadian Government formed the NorthWest Mounted Police. They were to ensure peace and order in a wilderness jurisdiction that stretched from the western border of Manitoba to the Rockies and as far north as anyone could go. • The son of the famous English novelist Charles Dickens was a member of the North-West Mounted Police. Francis Jeffrey Dickens joined on November 4, 1874, and served in the Force until March 1, 1886. • Today, the RCMP are famous for their distinctive Red Serge, referred to as “Review Order” (of dress uniform) consisting of a high-collared scarlet tunic, midnight blue breeches with yellow leg strip, Sam Browne belt with shoulder cross strap, white sidearm lanyard, brown riding boots, brown Stetson hat (wide, flat-brimmed), and brown gloves. But in the 1800s, the uniform of the North West Mounted Police was similar to the one worn by the British Army. In fact, the very first uniform used by the NWMP was issued from militia stores in Ottawa. • Stuart Zachary Taylor Wood, the 8th commissioner of the RCMP, was the great grandson of Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States. • King Edward VII granted the prefix “Royal” in 1904, and the force became known as the Royal North West Mounted Police. • The more familiar name, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, came about in 1920. This is when the Royal North West Mounted Police absorbed the Dominion Police, and headquarters were transferred from Regina to Ottawa.
