WOMEN IN HISTORY (continued): • It’s hard to separate the fact from the fiction in the case of Calamity Jane. This rough-andtumble, cussing, drinking woman who dressed like a man is said to have been a crack shot. Born Martha Jane Cannary in 1852, she was a gold miner, scout, a soldier and a Pony Express rider. One claim states that she nursed several people back to health during an 1878 smallpox epidemic. Although she reportedly married Clinton Burke at age 33 and bore a daughter, it’s said that her last wishes were, “Bury me beside Wild Bill, the only man I ever loved,” speaking of Wild Bill Hickok, killed during a Deadwood card game. She lies beside the gunslinger in Terry, South Dakota. • Most of us have heard the children’s rhyme about Lizzie Borden, who “took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks, and when she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.” It was in 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts, that her father and stepmother were found dead in their home. Lizzie claimed she had been in the barn looking for fishing equipment when it happened. Because her father had no will, his nearly $500,000 estate was to go to his children, not his second wife. If Lizzie Borden really did the deed, she didn’t pay the consequences. Although this Sunday School teacher stood trial for the murders, with no weapon found, there was insufficient evidence to convict her. She was buried next to her parents in 1927. The family home has been operated as a bed-andbreakfast since 1992. Although reports vary, it appears as though Andrew Borden was only struck a fraction of the time the rhyme claims (10 or 11).

• The first American woman to win three Olympic gold medals had a rough start in life. Wilma Rudolph was born prematurely and suffered numerous illnesses throughout her childhood, including measles, mumps, scarlet fever, chicken pox and double pneumonia. The final straw was a diagnosis of polio. Rudolph’s mother refused to accept the doctor’s opinion that her daughter would never walk again, and she worked with Rudolph continually. After two years of physical therapy exercises, Wilma was able to walk with a metal leg brace. By age 12, she was walking normally without braces or corrective shoes. She made the decision to become an athlete, and excelled as a high school basketball star on a state championship team. Track events were next, and at age 16, she captured a bronze medal at the 1956 Olympics. Four years later, she took home three gold medals from Rome. Brain cancer claimed the life of this phenomenal woman at age 54.

• Elizabeth Dole, Shirley Chisholm and Hilary Clinton are all well-known names of women who have run for U.S. President. Belva Lockwood’s name is not quite so familiar. Lockwood was on the ticket twice, in 1884 and 1888, for the National Equal Rights Party, a party she herself founded. She was famous for winning the right for women lawyers to practice before the Supreme Court. Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color to serve in the U.S. Congress, received 2 percent of the votes in a May 1972 state primary for the presidential election. The very first woman to declare herself a presidential candidate was Victoria Woodhull in 1870. Woodhull actually spent election day in jail, accused of libel for an article she had penned for her family-owned newspaper. All in all, at least 35 women have thrown their hat in the ring for the office.

Do not be confused about "Buy Local". Buy Local means to purchase material or services from those businesses owned by people who live in the Cedar Rapids area. These owners are your family, friends and neighbours that could use your help. Some of them have been through the 2008 flood and others are battling the economy. Let us support these businesses by shopping at their establishments and in turn revitalize the great city of Cedar Rapids. We encourage customers to UTILIZE this free website for supporting local business owners and for the betterment of the Cedar Rapids community.

WHY BUY LOCAL?

Studies have shown that $45 of every $100 spent at locally owned stores stays in the community, whereas only about $13 of every $100 spent in chain (big box) stores remains in the local economy.

Medical Mall / Street Closing

Talk about a hot issue around town these days. It appears that the main issue is the closing of 2nd Ave SE in Cedar Rapids. I would hope that everyone would be in favor of expanded and or improved medical facilities in your own area. Closing a major street in a town can have many implications, some good some bad. I keep hearing opponents say why not use a skywalk? Without seeing the use of the land and building designs, it would be hard for me to make any real judgements about a skywalk. However has anyone considered what has been done in other parts of the country, or even world? Has anyone considered building above street level? Check out the Hennepin County Government Center and the Hennepin County Medical Center in Downtown Minneapolis. You can view both of these buildings by going to Goggle maps and after zooming in to street view, click on Earth view. There you can visually see the multi stories above the roadway while moving through the underside of the buildings. They have included a drop off-pickup lane and large sidewalk area below the buildings. In fact, HCMC covers several blocks and goes completely over two different streets. The HCGC is built over 6th St. using the edge of two separate city blocks. Then they used the remaining parts of both blocks to include a park like atmosphere on each side of the building. While surfing the net about this topic, I found an even more interesting building. The Gate Tower Building in Japan. This is a 16 Story building that was constructed with a freeway built right through the 5th - 7th floors. Now that's weird. Once a building is built, it could take decades to revert back to the way things are now if it was determined that it was a mistake to close a major street flowing into downtown Cedar Rapids. One way streets do help improve traffic flow. Currently studies could prove that there is not ample traffic in downtown Cedar Rapids to worry about the closing of 2nd Ave. Heck, often times I can walk diagonal across a downtown street at high noon without having to dodge cars. This is a sad thing and hopefully someday more businesses will get back downtown. This column is too short to get into this problem, but a vibrant downtown would greatly help this entire community. Since the mayor and Chamber of Commerce are behind this idea of closing a street, maybe they know more about the future of the downtown then most folks that I have listened to. I can only imagine that they would also want to see a real come back to the downtown area as well!

I have never understood why women love cats. Cats are independent, they don't listen, they don't come in when you call, they like to stay out all night, and when they're home they like to be left alone and sleep. In other words, every quality that women hate in a man, they love in a cat.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Hold Back Time If it works in mice ... it’s a good clue it will work in humans, right? So say Harvard University researchers who think they’ve discovered just how it is that human beings age. Restricting calories and getting enough exercise have been thought to hold back the effects of aging. But now there’s an explanation: synapses. These are basically junction boxes within cells that send messages back and forth. As we age, the “connections” between muscles deteriorate and complete messages don’t get through. They’ve discovered that there are vast differences in the synapses of the young and old, at least when it comes to mice. Scientists concluded two things. Restricted calories decreased abnormalities in elderly mice, and only one month of exercise (in this case, running on a wheel in a cage) reduced changes related to aging. Remember the “monkey study” from last year? Researchers studied primates for 20 years, dividing them into two groups: those that could eat what they wanted, and those that had their calories slightly reduced. Many more of the “low-cal” group are still alive. And what about the research that exercise helps to stave off cognitive impairment, especially in women? This is one more signal to us to eat a proper diet and get off the couch and get some exercise. We can, to some degree, hold back time when it comes to mental and physical aging. So where do we start? It starts at the doctor’s office. We need to ask for specific diet guidelines or a referral to a nutritionist who can map out just what we need to be eating on a daily basis. We need to ask about exercise programs suitable for our age and condition. Then we need to actually do what they advise -- eat right and get enough exercise.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver

~ It was 19th-century author Samuel Butler who made the following sage observation: “Morality is the custom of one’s country and the current feeling of one’s peers. Cannibalism is moral in a cannibal country.” ~ When the city of New York was concerned about leaks in its main watersupply system, it found a novel approach to the problem. Six experienced deep-sea divers were hired to live in a pressurized tank within the water-supply tunnel for a month while they investigated the leaks. ~ Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Popsicle was invented by an 11-year-old boy. ~ If you would like to get into modeling and live the glamorous life, you might want to reconsider: Researchers at Dow Jones MarketWatch have found that the average model makes a mere $11 to $12 per hour. ~ Statistics show that for every person born in the United States, there are 15 puppies and 45 kittens born. ~ In 1950, the average executive earned about 30 times as much as the average worker. Today’s executives earn 300 to 500 times as much. ~ Evidently wild monkeys are causing a bit of trouble for railroads in India. It seems that the monkeys board trains and run amok, causing no small amount of consternation to the passengers. To combat the problem, police in the city of Delhi hired a black-faced langur monkey to ride the trains and frighten off the wild monkeys. There’s no word on what wages were offered. ~ The most common surnames in the United States are, in order, Smith, Johnson, Williams and Jones. ¥ Those who study such things say that in just one of your fingertips there are approximately 3,000 touch receptors. *** Thought for the Day: “A conference is a gathering of important people who singly can do nothing, but together can decide that nothing can be done.” -- Fred Allen (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

What do you think of when you hear the name Barbra Streisand? Singer? Actress? This entertainer is also a producer, director, writer, composer, designer, political activist and philanthropist. Let’s take a look at the life of this multi-faceted artist. • A Brooklyn native, Streisand was educated at the Bais Yakov School as a child. Her father Emmanuel was a well-respected teacher and scholar who succumbed to a brain hemorrhage when his daughter was just 15 months old. She went on to Erasmus High School, where she sang in the choir with a young man named Neil Diamond. Although they weren’t close friends in high school, in later years they had a blockbuster hit duet, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore.” • Barbra has always seemed to get it right the first time. Her very first Broadway performance at age 19 netted a Tony nomination and the New York Drama Critics Award. Her first record album at age 20 earned her two Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year; at the time, she was the youngest artist to receive this prestigious honor. At age 23, Streisand’s first television special, 1965’s “My Name is Barbra,” collected five Emmy Awards. She was awarded a Best Actress Oscar in 1968 for her very first motion picture role, that of Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl.” Along came Streisand’s second Academy Award in 1976, when she became the first female composer to take it home. The song was “Evergreen,” the love theme for the movie “A Star is Born,” which she produced and starred in with Kris Kristofferson. • At the end of the 1970s, only Elvis Presley and the Beatles had sold more albums than Barbra Streisand. • Record holding is what Streisand does best. She’s the only artist to have a No. 1 album in five different decades, from the 1960s to the 2000s. Another record was set when she became the first person to achieve four major honors –a Grammy, an Emmy, an Oscar and a Tony Award. Her 1983 film “Yentl,” the story about a Jewish girl in Poland, brought her recognition as the first woman ever to produce, direct, write and star in a major film. She captured the Best Director Golden Globe for that film, again, the first woman to receive that honor. She is also the artist with Grammy nominations in the most categories, a record of nine. • With 51 gold albums, 30 platinum and 18 multiplatinum albums to her name, she tops the list of best-selling female artists in the recording industry. There were 33 years between her first No. 1 album (“People”) and her most recent (“Higher Ground”). • Actor Elliot Gould became Streisand’s first husband when she was just 20 years old. The eight-year marriage produced one son, Jason. Over the years, she has been romantically linked with Joe Namath, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Liam Neeson. She has been married to actor James Brolin since 1998. • Streisand’s latest movie role in the comedy, “Meet the Fockers,” is as the mother of Greg Focker, played by Ben Stiller. This blockbuster film sold three million copies of its DVD during the first 24 hours after it hit the shelves. • Streisand is proud to say, “I arrived in Hollywood without having my nose fixed, my teeth capped or my name changed. That is very gratifying to me.”

Jeff Burton Running Hard BROOKLYN, Mich. -- A typical first impression of Jeff Burton is that he’s got more sense than most race-car drivers. It isn’t to say that racers aren’t intelligent, witty and likable. They are. Burton, however, is thoughtful, reasonable and tactful. Those are the qualities that set him apart. At 43, Burton is the younger of South Boston, Va., racing brothers. Ward Burton won five Sprint Cup races in a career that ran from 1994 through 2007, highlighted by the 2002 Daytona 500. Jeff Burton has won 21 times at NASCAR’s highest level. Perhaps a rivalry among brothers is an excellent breeding ground for tact. Jeff Burton is one of six drivers in the current top 12 -- i.e., Chase for the Sprint Cup position with three regular-season races left -- without a victory thus far in 2010. Nonetheless, he ranks seventh in the point standings with four top-five finishes and 12 top 10s. A year ago, none of Richard Childress Racing’s three drivers made the Chase. This year all three are in position to do so, and Kevin Harvick is the point leader. “We’ve had to fight to climb back up the hill,” said Burton. “What we have to work on is not getting back down. This is a competitive sport. You’re not always going to be as good as you can be. ... You’ve just got to go to work and not accept failure.” As far as the Chase is concerned, he added, “Number one, you still have to make it. There’s still a lot of racing left to go. Number two, I just believe that this Chase will be like most Chases: You’ve got to run in the front. You have to avoid the bad races.” With the Chase just three races away, Burton said, “Some people are trying to protect positions. Some people are trying to go get bonus points. Some people are trying to earn their way in. The guys that are in 14th, 15th, they don’t believe they are out of it. They still have a shot.” Anyone who makes the Chase, of course, has “a shot” at the Sprint Cup championship. A championship would crown Burton’s entire career. He has finished third, fourth, fifth (twice), sixth, seventh and eighth in the Cup standings at various points in his career. “I hope that we can come down to Homestead,” said Burton, referring to the season finale. “I hope we can be in the midst of it, and it comes down to late in the race. That’s what we do.” ***

Funny Business

By Danny Franks Penguins Comedy Club has hosted national touring comedians for the past 22 years. Penguins open during the comedy boom in the late 1980’s when most medium sized towns had over 5 or 6 comedy nights every week. Now in the 2000’s you can only find 1 remaining in Cedar Rapids with live comedy shows EVERY WEEK. Some weeks are rocking, some weeks are kind of depressing to me. In 10 years of working at Penguins I have seen some great comics, who were not well known at the time, become the biggest stars in standup comedy. I have seen Tommy Johnagin (Before his “Last Comic Standing” run), Andy Kindler (Before Judging “Last Comic Standing”), Brian Regan, Jamie Kennedy (Before his TV show and Movie roles), Louis CK, Jay Mohr, Harland Williams, and Judah Friedlander (Before “30 Rock”). The point is that you never know who the next big comic is. Most of our popularity comes off of BIG TIME shows like Pauly Shore, Tom Arnold, Jennifer Coolidge, Jim Breuer and Norm MacDonald. These shows can be very memorable but a majority of my favorite comics are the lesser knowns like Jimmy Pardo, Mike Toomey, Carl Labove, and Pat Godwin. Not to insult these comics by saying they are unknown but they are just unknown to the general public and not to insult the BIG TIME comics because to be a part of “Saturday Night Live”, or any TV show you must be doing something right. These “unknown” comics are highly looked at as the best touring comics in the states today. So when you come across an advertisement for a comic coming up to Penguins and you say “I don’t know him, he must not be funny,” think again. There is a reason why we’ve been open for business for over 20 years. We know comedy. Trust us and stop out on any non special event weekend and see the true heart of standup comedy, you may see the next Jerry Seinfeld for only 12 bucks.

Don't blame me; nobody asked my opinion. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

• On Sept. 11, 1857, Mormon guerrillas, stoked by religious zeal and a deep resentment of decades of public abuse, murder 120 emigrants at Mountain Meadows, Utah. The conflict with the wagon train of emigrants from Missouri and Arkansas apparently began when the Mormons refused to sell the train any supplies. • On Sept. 10, 1897, 25-year-old London taxi driver George Smith becomes the first person ever arrested for drunk driving after slamming his cab into a building. Smith later pled guilty and was fined 25 shillings. • On Sept. 6, 1915, a prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. Little Willie was far from an overnight success. It weighed 14 tons, got stuck in trenches and crawled over rough terrain at only 2 mph. However, improvements were made to the original prototype and tanks eventually transformed military battlefields. • On Sept. 9, 1939, audiences at the Fox Theater in Riverside, Calif., get a surprise showing of “Gone with the Wind,” which the theater manager shows as a second feature. Producer David O. Selznick sat in the back and observed the audience reaction to his highly anticipated film. The movie was released a few months later. • On Sept. 7, 1950, Julie Kavner, perhaps best known as the voice of Marge Simpson on “The Simpsons,” is born in Los Angeles. Kavner’s first professional acting job came in 1974 when she was cast as Brenda Morgenstern in the TV series “Rhoda.” (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Four Freshmen Open CR Community Concert’s 80th Season In 1948 a new car cost $1,500, gasoline was 25 cents a gallon and a postage stamp was three pennies. Only one in ten Americans had ever seen a TV set. Popular songs included “Tennessee Waltz” and “Red Roses for a Blue Lady.” And at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, brothers Don and Ross Barbour formed a barbershop quartet, which eventually became The Four Freshmen. Today, after numerous hit records and many changes in personnel, the legendary group lives on. The Four Freshmen opens the Cedar Rapids Community Concert Association’s 2010-2011 season Friday, September 10, with a 7:30 p.m. concert at the U.S. Cellular Center. Considered a vocal band because the singers accompany themselves on guitar, trumpet, drums and other instruments, The Four Freshmen combine jazz arrangements with the big band sounds of groups such as Glenn Miller’s “Modernaires” and Tommy Dorsey’s “Pied Pipers.” The first hit single for the group came in 1952 with “It’s a Blue World,” followed quickly by “Mood Indigo” in 1954, “Day by Day” in 1955, and “Graduation Day” in 1956. Downbeat magazine named The Four Freshmen Best Vocal Group of the Year in 1953, 1954, 1955, and 1956, then again in 2000 and 2001 – proving the popularity and staying power of their legendary vocal harmony. They also placed tops in the Best Vocal Group category for the 2007 Jazz Times readers’ poll. After successful recordings, albums, movie and TV appearances in the 1950s and 60s, the group lost many fans to the British rock band invasion. But The Four Freshmen persevered, even after the last original member, Bob Flanigan, retired in 1992. (Flanigan now manages the group.) Loyal fans old and new have formed the International Four Freshmen Society – boasting some 3,000 members. During their 62 years, The Four Freshmen have recorded 49 albums, CDs and DVDs. They still perform at over 100 locations worldwide each year.
