Natural arches show the remarkable beauty of nature. It is phenomenal to see the rock structures that occur with only nature as the architect. The Natural Arch and Bridge Society (NABS) created a list of the “Big 13” natural arches that have spans over 200 feet (61 m). Of those, six are in Utah, four in China, and one each in Colorado, New Mexico and Chad. The NABS assembled experts to come up with standards and definitions for measuring natural arches, but a simple definition of the span is, “the horizontal extent of unsupported rock.” Their website is a great resource for information about arches: w w w. n a t u r a l a r c h e s . o r g . • According to the NABS, the largest arch in the “Big 13” is Fairy Bridge on Buliu River, Guangxi, China, with a span of 295 feet (90 m). Raft trips under the arch are a popular tourist attraction in the area. • Utah is home to Arches National Park, which contains over 2,000 natural stone arches. The 73,000-acre (29542 ha) area is full of spires, balanced rocks, canyons and magnificent sandstone arches. • President Herbert Hoover signed legislation on April 12, 1929, creating Arches National Monument, and then on November 12, 1971, Congress changed the status to Arches National Park.

ARCHES (continued): The park is a Mecca for hikers and bikers and arch-seekers in the fall and spring. Since this area of Utah has a “high desert” climate, the summers can be very hot. Delicate Arch is one of the most famous arches in Arches National Park. It is the arch seen on Utah license plates, advertisements, tourism magazines and pamphlets. One of the largest of the 2,000-plus arches in the park collapsed in 2008. Wall Arch was the 12th largest in size with an opening beneath the span that was 71 feet (22 m) wide and 33-1/2 feet (10 m) high. No one saw it collapse. Landscape Arch in Arches National Park is the second largest on the NABS list of the “Big 13.” It has a span of 290 feet (88 m) and in the thinnest section is only about 6 feet (2 m) thick. According to the NABS, “This arch could collapse at any time: any day, any year, any decade, or any century.” Plan a trip to see it now before it is too late! Next in line to Landscape Arch in size is Kolob Arch in Zion National Park, Utah, with a span of 287 feet (87 m). Another park set aside to protect natural arches is Arches Provincial Park on the western side of Newfoundland. There are three arches (There were four; one collapsed.) that are all 15 feet (4.6 m) high. Two interesting temporary bicycle arches were built for events in 2006 and 2007. Toronto had a bike arch that was constructed in the summer of 2006 at Queens Quay. The second bike arch was built at the Burning Man Festival at Black Rock Desert, Nevada, in 2007. The first monument dedicated to world peace is astride the international border between Blaine, Washington, and Surrey, British Columbia. The International Peace Arch, dedicated in 1921, represents the longest undefended boundary in the world with one foot anchored in Canada and the other in the United States.

ARCHES (continued): • The Peace Arch is one of the first earthquakeproof structures to be built in North America. It is 67 feet (20 m) high, made of concrete and reinforced steel. The foundation has 76, 14-inch (36 cm) pilings driven 25-30 feet (7-9 m) in the earth. The inscription on the east side of the Peace Arch reads, “May These Gates Never Be Closed.” It is one of the few world landmarks listed on the Historic Registries of two countries. • Jackson, Wyoming, (the area is known as Jackson Hole) has four elk antler arches at the corners of Town Square Park in the center of the Western town. The arches were first put up in the 1960s by the Rotary Club, using antlers gathered from the nearby National Elk Refuge. Male elk shed their antlers every spring and grow new ones in the summer. Each arch, made from about 2,000 antlers, weighs 7,000-10,000 pounds (3175 – 4500 kg). A campaign to replace the antler arches started in 2006. The Rotary Club of Jackson Hole has been auctioning off the old arches and replacing them with new ones. These are definitely tourist attractions worth keeping. Millions of tourists from all over the world have had their pictures taken under the arches. • By the way, elk antlers are gathered by Boy Scouts on the Elk Refuge property each spring for an auction the Saturday before Memorial Day each May. The scouts donate about 80 percent of the proceeds to the Elk Refuge. $25 off a lovable pet portrait! For the first 5 people this week who call and mention this ad.

● On Sept. 25, 1789, the first Congress of the United States approves 12 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, and sends them to the states for ratification. The amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, were influenced by the English Bill of Rights of 1689. ● On Sept. 23, 1846, at the Berlin Observatory, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovers the planet Neptune. The blue gas giant, which has a diameter four times that of Earth, was named for the Roman god of the sea. It completes an orbit of the Sun once every 165 years. ● On Sept. 21, 1938, without warning, a powerful Category 3 hurricane slams into Long Island and southern New England. All told, 700 people were killed by the hurricane, nearly 9,000 homes and buildings were destroyed and nearly 3,000 ships were sunk or wrecked. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Blood Pressure Drug Helps Build Muscles

A common drug for high blood pressure can help build muscles in seniors, according to researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. I saw one quote from a researcher that indicated a 70-year-old could end up with the muscle building power of a 30-yearold. Here’s how it works: In those who are young, eating a meal releases insulin, which then opens blood vessels, which then make amino acids available for muscle building. In seniors, that dilation doesn’t happen -- and often there is muscle loss because the right nutrients aren’t getting to the muscles. Muscle loss equals weakness, and we know what that means: loss of mobility, loss of balance and the resulting falls that can lead to broken limbs. While I wouldn’t want to have been a test subject in this particular bit of research, I do like the conclusions they’ve come to. Dilation of the blood vessels, along with the potential for increased muscle building, occurred in the study because of the high blood pressure drug that was given. The drug -- sodium nitroprusside -- causes dilation of the blood vessels, which sends nutrients to the muscles. Participants in the study had to be dedicated to get through the research. They had to endure catheters being inserted into leg muscles so that insulin could be dripped in, mimicking the insulin increase that would normally take place after eating. The test subjects who were also given the blood pressure medicine along with the insulin ended up with increased muscle-building protein. Additional studies are needed, of course, to check their results. I hope they hurry up. Imagine how beneficial this would be. No more struggling to climb stairs, no more balance difficulties.

I’ve changed my will three times!”.

It’s no surprise that Russia is one of them, but it seems odd that the other would be France. It’s true, though; once you take a look at a map of French territories around the world, you’ll see. There are French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean, the island of Reunion off the east coast of Africa, various holdings in the Caribbean, and New Caledonia off the east coast of Australia, among others. ~ If you had to choose, would you rather be bitten by a skunk or sprayed by one? The creatures can’t do both things at once. ~ Yes, there’s a word for it: The plastic tips you find on shoelaces are known as aglets. ~ If you’re a professional flute player, it’s likely that your instrument is made from sterling silver, 14-carat gold or platinum. ~ A snail’s teeth are located in rows along its tongue. ~ It’s a commonly held belief that the Coriolis effect causes water to drain out of sinks and toilets in one direction in the Northern Hemisphere, while it drains in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere. As it turns out, this isn’t true. Drains are so small that the Coriolis effect has no measurable influence at all. It’s the shape of the sink and whether or not it’s level that determines the direction of the drainage. ***

The fourth of 12 children, Dolly Rebecca Parton grew up in a one-room cabin on a tobacco farm in Locust Ridge, near Sevierville, Tennessee. Her hometown has benefitted from her in many ways, thanks to her generous nature and her celebrity status. • Growing up in a large family that attended the local Pentecostal Church, Parton started singing as a child. By age 10 she was already making appearances on local television and radio shows in nearby Knoxville. • Parton graduated from high school in 1964. She knew early on that she wanted a career in music and left for Nashville the day after graduation. She met Carl Dean her first afternoon in Nashville. They were married two years later and are still together now after 44 years of marriage. • Parton’s first album, “Hello, I’m Dolly,” was released in February 1967. That same year she joined the weekly “Porter Wagoner Show.” Porter was a superstar, and his show was viewed by over 45 million people in 100 markets. When Parton was invited to join him and started singing duets with Porter, her career took off. Parton and Porter recorded 14 Top Ten hits together, touring the country and even appearing on the Grand Ole Opry together. She remained on his show for seven years and then became a solo artist in 1974. • Parton not only became famous for singing her songs but also for writing most of them. She has written more than 3,000 songs. In her own words, “I’ve always been a writer. My songs are the door to every dream I’ve ever had and every success I’ve ever achieved.” Some of her early solo hits were “Coat of Many Colors,” “Joshua” and “Jolene.” • When Parton wrote and recorded “I Will Always Love You” in 1974, it topped the charts–for the first time. It did so again in 1982, making Parton the first artist to earn a No. 1 spot twice with the same song. Whitney Houston recorded the song in 1992, and “I Will Always Love You” hit No. 1 yet again, selling more than four million copies. • Parton has earned a very long list of awards for her talents as a songwriter and singer, but she also has awards for acting. Her big screen debut was in the movie “Nine to Five” in 1980, which was highly successful. She wrote the title track during the filming of the show. “Nine to Five” was also on Broadway in 2009, and Parton wrote 20-plus original songs for the theatre version. She starred in several other musical comedies, and then the 1989 unforgettable hit movie, “Steel Magnolias.” • If you want to know more about Parton’s many awards and honors, look on the internet. This Tidbits article isn’t long enough! • In addition to her songwriting, singing and acting, Parton is a successful businesswoman. She has given back a lot to the area she grew up in and continues to love. Dollywood, the theme park in the Pigeon Forge, Smokey Mountain area of Tennessee, is one of the top tourist destinations in the South. Dollywood has been open since 1988 but expanded to include Splash Country in 2001. She also has the Dixie Stampede Dinner Shows in Pigeon Forge as well as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Branson, Missouri. All of these venues have provided many needed jobs. • One of many great Parton quotes: “I’m not offended by dumb blonde jokes, because I know that I’m not dumb. I also know I’m not blonde.” The savvy businesswoman has definitely shown herself to be intelligent.

Johnny B Friday Jan. 23rd 8 pm A man and his music! Vickers Sets Return After Heart Surgery Brian Vickers, who made the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2009, competed in only 11 races this season. After a 10th-place finish at Darlington Raceway on May 8, he fell ill. Doctors discovered that Vickers, 26, had developed blood clots in his left leg, left finger and lungs. A regimen of blood thinners made it impossible for him to compete in his No. 83 Team Red Bull Toyota. Recently, Vickers underwent successful surgery to repair a small hole between the two atriums of his heart. He also was diagnosed with MayThurner Syndrome, in which blood flow is restricted because a vein and/or artery are pinched. After surgery, a stent was placed in a vein on July 13 to open it. Now, however, Vickers expects to return to fulltime competition next year. “Not only did we figure out what the problem was,” said Vickers, “but we were able to fix it. ... I’m going to be back in the No. 83 and very excited to be back with Red Bull.” Vickers, who has mostly stayed away from the track, has spent off time traveling and working out. “My main priority is getting back to racing next year,” he said. “I’ve been given a gift. Things happen for a reason. I’ve had some time to think back and look at my career, both personally and professionally. I don’t think I’ll change a lot when I come back, but I do think I will change some. I’m probably going to tolerate a lot less, but at the same time there will be areas I will tolerate a lot more -- just depends on what it is. I have a new appreciation for life. I’m looking forward to it. I feel great and can’t wait to race.” Vickers, from Thomasville, N.C., expects to be off blood thinners by January, at which point he will get back in a race car and begin testing to prepare for the 2011 season. “What I love to do is race,” he said. “It is not only my job, but my passion. I’ve been missing that need for speed, the competition, my people and friends in the industry, but at the same time, it has been nice to take a break.”

The Iowa Theatre Artists Company (ITAC)

is the “new kid on the block” in the Iowa professional theatre community. The co-founders of the company, however, are not. Meg Merckens and Tom Johnson are each veterans of many years of directing, acting, and promotion in the professional theatre. As co-producers for ITAC they are involved in company management, new projects development, and producing the artistic product of the company. The Company began its professional life in 2008 with productions in various locations in Eastern Iowa, including several at the Colony Village Restaurant in “Little Amana.” With the purchase of the former Barn Restaurant in October of 2008 in the “heart” of Amana,ITAC built a 102-seat theatre space that offers a wide variety of shows featuring professional actors in an intimate setting. The ITAC Season runs from May through December with theatre performances on Fridays at 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm, Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 1:30 pm. This Way And That By Tresa Erickson

You have a small home office with low ceilings that you would like to make appear larger and less boxy. You've read various design tips and have decided the best way to go is to add some tone-on-tone vertical stripes to the walls. The stripes will create the illusion of higher ceilings and make the room appear larger than it is. With stripes, you have two options. You can hand-paint or tape them off. Either way, you will probably want to measure and mark off the stripes. Be careful what size of stripes you create. Narrow stripes may blend in and disappear in a large room, while wide stripes may make a small room feel cramped. For the best results, sketch out the design on paper and create some samples. This will also give you the chance to play with color. When measuring, start in the least noticeable corner of the room and be prepared to make some adjustments as you get to the end of the wall. You may have to modify the width of the last couple of stripes. If possible, use a colored pencil in the same tone as the base color of the walls. Regular pencil lines could smudge and may be harder to cover up with paint. For crisp stripes, use painter's tape, making sure you seal the edges to prevent paint from seeping through. Place the tape right outside of the line so the colored pencil will get covered up. You are now prepared to paint. You should use similar colors for your stripes, particularly with a tone-on-tone scheme. For further depth and interest, you might want to use different sheens of paint. If the base color is flat, for example, you could use satin or semi-gloss paint for the stripes. When you are ready to paint, use long, vertical strokes, starting at the edges and working your way in. When done right, stripes can add drama to any room. However, they do take a little more effort than just painting a wall. Make sure you have the time to put into the project. You don't want to rush and end up with a design that does not enhance the room or create the illusion of space.

The broker begins to scan the sheet, and notices that the applicant has been fired from every real estate office he has ever worked for. "I must say," says the executive, "your work history is terrible. You've been fired from every real estate office." "Yes," says the man. "Well," continues the broker, "there's not much positive in that." "Hey!" says the guy as he pokes the application. "At least I'm not a quitter."
