MOUNTAINS (continued): • The Appalachian Mountains are made up of mountains, ridges and valleys. The Great Smoky Mountains are in this region, and they run from Tennessee to North Carolina. • The Blue Ridge Mountains are the backbone of the Appalachian Mountain system. They extend from Georgia to Pennsylvania. • Mt. Mitchell, in the Appalachians, is the highest mountain on the eastern coast. It is about 6,684 feet high. • The Andes Mountain range is an uninterrupted chain of highland that is situated along the western coast of South America. It is the longest exposed mountain range in the world and comprises two great ranges: Cordillera Oriental and Cordillera Occidental, which stand divided by a deep intermediate depression. • The Himalayas stretch across six countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, the People’s Republic of China, India, Nepal and Pakistan. Some of the world’s major rivers, the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Yangtze, rise in the Himalayas, and their combined drainage basin is home to some 1.3 billion people, including the people of Bangladesh. • The world’s highest peak on land is Mt. Everest in the Himalayas. It is 29,036 feet tall. When measured from sea-level, Mount Everest is without a doubt the biggest mountain peak on this planet. However, if one were to consider the height of a mountain from its base to its peak, there are few other mountains such as Mt. McKinley and Mauna Kea that are taller than Everest in totality. • Prior to being named Mount Everest, the mountain was commonly referred to as Peak XV. It was formally named Mount Everest after Col. George Everest who was the Surveyor General of India in the early 1860s.

• The highest peak in the U.S. Rockies is Mt. Elbert in Colorado, at 14,433 feet; in the Canadian Rockies it is Mt. Robson in British Columbia, at 12,972 feet. • The Continental Divide, located in the Rocky Mountains, separates waters flowing into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico from those flowing into the Pacific Ocean. • The Rocky Mountains include at least 100 separate ranges, which are generally divided into four broad groupings: the Canadian Rockies and Northern Rockies of Montana and northeastern Idaho; the Middle Rockies of Wyoming, Utah and southeastern Idaho; the Southern Rockies, mainly in Colorado and New Mexico; and the Colorado Plateau in the four corners region. • The Canadian Rockies are quite different in appearance and geology from the American Rockies to the south of them. The Canadian Rockies are composed of layered sedimentary rock such as limestone and shale. The American Rockies are made of metamorphic and igneous rock, such as granite. • Alberta, Canada, is named after Princess Louisa Caroline Alberta, the fourth child of Queen Victoria. The Princess was born in 1848, and married the Governor General of Canada. The princess is also the namesake of Lake Louise in the Rocky Mountains.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver
• It was journalist, entrepreneur and philanthropist Esther Dyson who made the following sage observation: “The Internet is like alcohol in some sense. It accentuates what you would do anyway. If you want to be a loner, you can be more alone. If you want to connect, it makes it easier to connect.” • In China, the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, which issues license plates, has recently stopped allowing the number 4 to appear on the tags. Evidently the number sounds like the word for “death” and is therefore considered to be unlucky. • Here’s a startling statistic: If your family is average, you throw out about $600 in unspoiled food every year. • If you’re planning a vacation sometime in the near future, you might want to keep in mind Travel & Leisure magazine’s most recent city rankings. These rankings didn’t involve food or culture, though. For this particular list, readers voted on the cities with the most- and least-attractive people. If you enjoy people-watching, head to Charleston, S.C., which reportedly boasts the most attractive populace, followed by San Diego and Savannah, Ga., in second and third places. The U.S. cities with the least attractive residents? According to the survey, they’re Memphis, Baltimore and Philadelphia. • Have you ever wondered what the largest irrigated crop in the United States is? It’s not soybeans, wheat or even corn; it’s grass, mostly in lawns, parks and golf courses. *** Thought for the Day: “The secret of life is to appreciate the pleasure of being terribly, terribly deceived.” -- Oscar Wilde (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

MOUNTAINS (continued): • Five national parks are located within the Canadian Rockies, four of which interlock and make up the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage site. These four parks are Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho. • The world’s highest mountain, from its base on the ocean floor, is Mauna Kea, on Hawaii. It is 33,474 feet high, but only 13,796 feet are above sea level. The summit of Mauna Kea has been a celestial observatory since ancient times and is considered to be one of the best astronomical sites in the world. The summit of Mauna Kea is above approximately 40 percent of Earth’s atmosphere, which not surprisingly, allows for exceptionally clear and amazing images of the night sky. Additionally, the peak is well above the inversion layer, which leads to approximately 300 clear nights per year. • Standing at 4,406 feet, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles, and as such is the major challenge for any United Kingdom climber or walker. In Gaelic, the mountain’s name Beinn Nibheis has been linked with Irish and Gaelic words meaning poisonous or terrible. •
As the most recognized mountain on the European continent, the roughly chiseled rock pyramid that is the Matterhorn is a defining geographical landmark. With a near perfect pyramid, its absolute symmetry distinguishes this mountain. It is considered the birthplace of climbing.

An airliner was having engine trouble, and the pilot instructed the cabin crew to have the passengers take their seats and get prepared for an emergency landing. A few minutes later, the pilot asked the flight attendants if everyone was buckled in and ready. "All set back here, Captain," came the reply, "except the lawyers are still going around passing out business cards."

past lessons turns lives, and to those I did face Looking out from the shadows, it’s easy for an old fool to see a far better place With a world passing by, I had learned to build walls with the same old bricks Later in life, only dreamers believe an old dog will learn to master new tricks Scratches on a vinyl record can’t be fixed, so are life’s mistakes all set in stone Do overs in the digital age, can living be made that easy, I ‘d chew on that bone Wisdom may not always be wise, I’ll pray all old sayings are not absolutely true Can a soul be redeemed, is hope a passion that heals the scars that bind like glue With age, walls do crumble, renewing the soul, liberation, once all old habits die Each time my fingers touch the keys, I will try to peer through an adolescent eye Possibly with a little love, a reason for hope, I would gladly give life a new look Then I would passionately tear out the tattered pages from that boring old book

Vibration Therapy for Bone Loss Vibration therapy is said to address a number of ills: prevent varicose veins, break up cellulite, rev up the lymph system and reduce knee and leg pain. The big benefit, however, is that it’s possible for vibration therapy to address the problem of bone loss. Here’s how vibration therapy is thought to work: The machine platform that one sits or stands on vibrates at 30-90 cycles per second, the same rate as muscles in the human body. The vibrations in essence mimic the body and do what the body isn’t doing anymore -- creating bone, in this case. The studies are numerous and come from all over the globe. In China, a 24-week study in postmenopausal women show an increase in the bone and mineral density of the hip. In Belgium, researchers compared vibration therapy with regular resistance training, and the vibration therapy showed that strength increased. In Florida, a study concluded that whole-body vibrations “improve quality of life, walk, balance and motor capacity in elderly patients.” Even NASA has gotten into the act with LIV, or Low Intensity Vibration. With astronauts spending long periods of time in space with no real way to exercise, bone loss has been a serious concern. Via various contraptions, NASA has been able to let astronauts work out, but the results haven’t been satisfactory when it comes to bone loss. Enter vibration therapy, and a way for astronauts to maintain bone strength while in space. I found some of these alleged machines for sale online. This is one item that needs a doctor’s advice, though, as a vibration level that’s too high can be very dangerous. The man from Ely was in no shape to drive, so he wisely left his car parked and walked home. As he was walking unsteadily along, he was stopped by a policeman. "What are you doing out here at 2 A.M.?" said the officer. "I'm going to a lecture." the man said. "And who is going to give a lecture at this hour?" the cop asked. "My wife." said the man.

James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942 and died on September 18, 1970. This American guitarist, singer and songwriter is often considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music and one of the most important and influential musicians of his era across a range of genres. • The first formal band Hendrix played in was The Velvetones, who performed regularly at the Yesler Terrace Neighborhood House in Seattle. He played without pay. His flashy style and lefthanded playing of a right-handed guitar made him a standout. • Early in his career, Hendrix joined the very popular Isley Brothers band and went on tour, where he was eventually hired as part of Little Richard’s backup band. • The Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham and later, producer Seymour Stein, both passed on managing Hendrix. They didn’t like his music. • Hendrix then met Chas Chandler, who was ending his tenure as bassist in The Animals rock band and was looking for talent to manage. Chandler was enamored with the song “Hey Joe” and was convinced he could create a hit single with the right artist. He liked how Hendrix played the song. • Producer-manager Chandler helped Hendrix move to London, where he joined with English bass player Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell to form his new group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. • In London, he gained a reputation as a great player. He jammed with Eric Clapton during an appearance with his new band, Cream. Hendrix’s fans included The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones. • Jimi recorded “Hey Joe” as his first single with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, followed by “Stone Free,” “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary.” (The last three are all Hendrix compositions.) • In March 1967, Hendrix set his guitar on fire on stage at the end of his act as part of a tour by The Walker Brothers. • In May 1967, the group released their first album, “Are You Experienced,” which reached No. 2 in England behind The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” • Although very popular internationally at this time, the Experience had yet to crack America. Their first single there failed to sell. Hendrix’s big chance came when Paul McCartney recommended the group to the organizers of the Monterey International Pop Festival. • Hendrix’s Monterey Pop Festival performance was filmed by D. A. Pennebaker and later shown in some movie theaters around the country in early 1969. The movie immortalized Hendrix’s burning and smashing of his guitar at the finale of his performance. • The last Experience concert took place on June 29, 1969, at Barry Fey’s Denver Pop Festival, a threeday event held at Denver’s Mile High Stadium that was marked by police firing tear gas into the audience as they played “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” The band escaped from the venue in the back of a rental truck that was partly crushed by fans trying to escape the tear gas. The next day, Noel Redding quit the Experience. • Hendrix died in London under somewhat mysterious circumstances on September 18, 1970.

• Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. The prevalence of coffee shops throughout America is proof enough that many of us just can’t get along in the morning without a hot cup of Colombian. • Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States! www.localshoppingcedarrapids.com Do not be confused about "Buy Local". Buy Local means to purchase material or services from those businesses owned by people who live in the Cedar Rapids area. These owners are your family, friends and neighbours that could use your help. Some of them have been through the 2008 flood and others are battling the economy. Let us support these businesses by shopping at their establishments and in turn revitalize the great city of Cedar Rapids. We encourage customers to UTILIZE this free website for supporting local business owners and for the betterment of the Cedar Rapids community.
WHY BUY LOCAL?
Studies have shown that $45 of every $100 spent at locally owned stores stays in the community, whereas only about $13 of every $100 spent in chain (big box) stores remains in the local economy.

Hanukkah Hanukkah is celebrated around the world for eight days and nights. As in many other celebrations of many other cultures, it’s about family gathering together and sharing food, blessings and good times. • It’s a celebration of restored freedom. Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees or Israelites over the Greek-Syrian ruler Antiochus about 2,200 years ago. • The holiday starts on the 25th of the month of Kislev. But because the Hebrew calendar is lunar rather than solar, it can fall anywhere from November to December on the standard calendar. • The date for Hanukkah this year is December 1 (sundown) to December 9. • Though Jews around the world commemorate Hanukkah, in Israel, Hanukkah is particularly festive. After all, to celebrate Hanukkah in Israel is to celebrate it where the story of the Maccabees took place. It’s a national holiday; schools are closed, menorahs are publicly displayed, and parties abound. • One of the most recognized symbols of Hanukkah, the chanukkiah is a special ninebranched candelabrum. It is different from the standard menorah, which holds seven candles and is the emblem of the State of Israel. • The chanukkiah or hanukkiyah symbolizes the time when the Maccabees wanted to rededicate their temple by lighting the “eternal flame,” but they only had enough consecrated oil to burn for one day. Miraculously, that little bit of oil lasted for eight days until more purified oil could be found. • Today, Jewish families light candles or burn oil in the chanukkiah for the eight days of Hanukkah, adding one candle each day. The ninth candle, the center one, is used to light the others.

The pro football team had just finished their daily practice session when a large turkey came strutting onto the field. While the players gazed in amazement, the turkey walked up to the head coach and demanded a tryout. Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line. When the turkey returned to the sidelines, the coach shouted, "You're terrific!!! Sign up for the season, and I'll see to it that you get a huge bonus." "Forget the bonus," the turkey said, "All I want to know is, does the season go past Thanksgiving Day?"
• Each night of Hanukkah, an additional candle is placed in the chanukkiah from right to left, and then lit from left to right. On the last night, all the candles are lit. • A dreidel, or sivion, is a four-sided top that has a Hebrew letter on each side. Spinning the dreidel is a popular Hanukkah custom. • During Hanukkah, families eat latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly donuts) or other foods that are fried in oil to celebrate and commemorate the miracle of purified oil.

• Gifts are also exchanged during the festival of Hanukkah. This tradition is adapted from the Christmas tradition of gift giving. • Hanukkah gelt, or money, is often distributed to children to enhance their enjoyment of the holiday. The amount is usually in small coins, although grandparents or other relatives may give larger sums as an official Hanukkah gift. • Unlike most spelling words you remember from school, Hanukkah can be correctly spelled many different ways, including Chanukah, Chanukkah and Hanukkah. • In North America especially, Hanukkah gained increased importance with many Jewish families in the latter half of the twentieth century, including large numbers of secular Jews who wanted a Jewish alternative to Christmas. Some Jews in North America and Israel now celebrate the environment along with Hanukkah, using the holiday’s “miracle of the oil” to reflect upon energy conservation.

Walk into any flooring store and you will be overwhelmed with the choices of contemporary solid flooring products. With so many options available, choosing the right materials, patterns and colors can be difficult. Learning the difference between vinyl, laminate and linoleum flooring will help you select the perfect flooring for your needs. Generally speaking, all three types of solid flooring can be found in a range of prices to fit almost any budget. Vinyl flooring was typically used for kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms and entryways. But with modern manufacturing techniques, homeowners can now choose from a large array of patterns and colors, including vinyl flooring that mimics ceramic tile or slate, making it suitable for any room in the home. There are two types of vinyl flooring. Inlaid, the more expensive of the two, features color and pattern throughout all layers of material whereas rotogravure has color and pattern printed on the visible side only. Most vinyls are constructed with a top layer of urethane for durability and some have an additional layer for stain resistance. The wear layer is measured in mils with the more expensive vinyl floors having a thicker wear layer for added strength, durability and stain resistance. Typically, inlaid vinyl has a high wear layer of 25 mils. As a result, it is easy to clean and will last a long time. Because of the knobby texture of rotogravure vinyl, scuff marks and stains are more difficult to remove, and with a thinner wear layer of 15 mils, life expectancy of the floor is lower than that of inlaid vinyl.

Vinyl can be installed as sheets, typically in 6' or 12' widths or installed as tiles. A knowlMove in this year edgeable homeowner can do the installawhile rates are low. danseda.org tion themselves but manufacturers recommend professional installation. Most home Reduced 431-1010 centers carry a large selection of colors and patterns ranging from $10 to $40 per square yard. If you’re looking for a surface that’s easy to clean, experts recommend sheet vinyl over tiles because spills are easily cleaned with just a swipe, whereas the seams of tiles collect dirt and grit, making them more difficult to maintain. Additionally, water or other liquids can seep between tiles, damaging the subfloor. For a seldom used area of the house, however, they may be perfect.

If you are looking for a wood plank floor but don’t want to break the bank, a laminate floor may be the right choice. What is laminate? Simply put, it consists of many layers of materials pressure bonded together. Similar to laminate countertops in construction with added resins for strength, laminate flooring is available in dozens of patterns and colors, most replicating hardwoods. As a floating floor, a laminate floor is not directly attached to the subfloor, but instead lays over it, which means it can be installed over almost any existing floor, including carpeting, vinyl, concrete or ceramic. Similar to hardwood floors, it is installed as individual boards with the newest tongue-and-groove styles making installation a cinch as many do-it-yourselfers are discovering. As with any floor, preparation and layout is an important step. Laminate flooring can be installed over any surface, but the subfloor needs to be clean, level and solid. You might want to consider a foam underlayment to help deaden sound. For installation over concrete, experts recommend a plastic vapor barrier first be installed. Planks should be installed to run with the length of the room. Environmentally friendly linoleum is another reliable hard surface that homeowners have been using for years. It is manufactured from all-natural products, such as linseed oil, cork powder, rosin and pigments, and provides a suitable surface for high-traffic areas. Today’s manufacturing processes provide an endless variety of colors and patterns to choose from. Because of its high durability and ease of maintenance, it is often selected for industrial and commercial use, with some applications lasting 30 years or more. Made from natural materials, linoleum is completely biodegradable and emits no air pollutants. If indoor air quality is a concern, consider linoleum for long-lasting beauty.

• On Nov. 30, 1886, the Folies Bergre in Paris introduces an elaborate revue featuring women in sensational costumes. The theater spared no expense, staging revues that featured as many as 40 sets. Among other long traditions, the show’s title always contains 13 letters and includes the word “Folie.” • On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and bringing an end to the national prohibition of alcohol. Mississippi, the last dry state in the Union, ended Prohibition in 1966. • On Dec. 4, 1945, in an overwhelming vote of 65 to 7, the U.S. Senate approves full U.S. participation in the United Nations. Some senators proposed a resolution designed to force the president to receive congressional consent before approving U.S. troops for any U.N. peacekeeping forces. The resolution was defeated. • On Dec. 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Ala., Rosa Parks is jailed for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man, a violation of the city’s racial segregation laws. Parks’ refusal was not merely brought on by her tired feet, as is the popular legend. Local civil-rights leaders had been planning a challenge to Montgomery’s racist bus laws for several months. • On Dec. 3, 1967, 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky receives the first human heart transplant in Cape Town, South Africa. After surgery, he was given drugs to suppress his immune system and keep his body from rejecting the heart. He died 18 days later from double pneumonia. • On Dec. 2, 1972, the Temptations earn the last of their four chart-topping hits when “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” reaches No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Earlier hits by producer-songwriter Smokey Robinson were “The Way You Do the Things You Do” (1964) and “My Girl” (1965). • On Nov. 29, 1981, actress Natalie Wood, who starred in such movies as “Rebel Without a Cause” and “West Side Story,” drowns in a boating accident near California’s Catalina Island. It was believed she somehow slipped overboard while untying a dinghy attached to the boat. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
