December 22– January 19

Home improvement jobs begin piling up. Grab some friends and get moving, Capricorn. An investment pays off. Look into making another one.

January 20– February 18 Career changes are in store. Be receptive, Aquarius. An elderly relative makes an unexpected move. Be supportive, even if you have hesitations.

February 19– March 20 The gorgeous colors of spring inspire you to make some changes at home. Start small, Pisces, and work your way up to bigger and better things.

June 22– July 22 Budget constraints ease with a windfall. Put on your detective cap, Cancer. A little snooping at home will prove fruitful. A receipt provides the first clue.

July 23– August 22 Prudence is required with a delicate matter at home. Watch where you step, Leo. A last-ditch effort to save a project at work is successful.

August 23– September 22 Your fitness routine could use some work. Look to a friend for guidance, Virgo. Lack of attention to detail wreaks havoc on a home repair.

APRIL BABIES (continued): • Back in 1991, Rodney King became famous overnight as a victim of police brutality at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department. He was pulled over for driving at speeds close to 120 mph on the freeway and up to 80 mph in a residential area. Officers delivered 56 baton blows and six kicks to the unarmed King. Four officers were acquitted of charges in the state courts, resulting in the 1992 Los Angeles riots, during which 53 people were killed and 2,383 injured. There were upwards of 7,000 fires and damages to 3,100 business, tallying $1 billion in financial losses. King later filed a civil suit, from which he was awarded $3.8 million. After years of struggling with alcoholism, King checked into the Pasadena Recovery Center and appeared on the reality show “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” followed by “Sober House.” In late 2010, he became engaged to one of the jurors from his civil suit. This April baby currently works with two non-profit organizations in Los Angeles. • Baby boomers will probably remember the eccentric ukulele-playing singer Tiny Tim. Born Herbert Khaury in April of 1932, he tried several stage names, such as Larry Love, Darry Dover and Judas K. Foxglove, before settling on the name of a Charles Dickens character. His big break came when he was booked on the television variety show “Laugh-In,” where he sang “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” in a high falsetto voice, a song that would become his trademark. At the height of his popularity in the 1960s, he earned $50,000 a week. He marked his 17-year-old girlfriend Victoria “Miss Vicki” Budinger on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” in 1969; the union endured eight years and produced a daughter, appropriately named Tulip.

• On April 25, 1719, Daniel Defoe’s fictional work “The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe” is published. The book, about a shipwrecked sailor who spends 28 years on a deserted island, is based on the experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who spent four years on a small island off the coast of South America in the early 1700s. • On April 27, 1865, an explosion on a Mississippi River steamboat kills an estimated 1,547 people, mostly Union soldiers returning home after the Civil War. The Sultana was built to hold 376 passengers, but reports say that there were as many as 2,700 people on board. • On May 1, 1931, New York City’s Empire State Building is dedicated. The idea for the Empire State Building is said to have been born of a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corp. and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors to see who could erect the taller building. • On April 30, 1948, the Land Rover, a Britishmade all-terrain vehicle, debuts at an auto show in Amsterdam. The Land Rover had a boxy, utilitarian design, four-wheel drive and a canvas roof. Seat cushions, doors, a heater and spare tire were considered extras. • On April 28, 1965, Barbra Streisand’s debut television special, “My Name is Barbra,” is aired. One sequence was shot on location in the fur department of Bergdorf Goodman, where Streisand vamped in exotic fur coats to a medley of poverty songs, including “Brother Can You Spare a Dime.” (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

More Generics Mean Lower Drug Prices Patents on some expensive brand-name drugs are set to expire this year, with an even larger number in 2012. That means the drug companies won’t have a lock on the market. Less-expensive generics are sure to follow as competition rises. Drugs set to expire this year and next include: Lipitor (expired in November 2010, generic due this year), Seroquel, Avandia, Lunesta and Singulair. Just before a patent expires, drug companies will renew their efforts to get doctors to prescribe their product. When your doctor prescribes something for you, ask if it’s one of the drugs that has come off patent, in which case an inexpensive generic might be available. Drug companies, however, do have exclusive rights to a generic version of their drug for six months after a patent expires. But after that, any company can create a generic, and the prices will fall. This can be very important for seniors who are approaching the doughnut hole, where Medicare won’t pay for coverage. Keep in mind that some of these companies are going to court and will be tied up in litigation. Still, from now on, when you get a prescription filled, ask the pharmacist if there is a less-expensive generic to be had. Another trick to keep patients on the brand-name drug is that the cost of the generic version sometimes can go up for a little while. Beware, and ask questions. A good way to keep track of the expiration of patents on drugs you take is to go online and do a search for the name of your drug and the words “patent expire.”

• In parts of Asia, tradition holds that if you sneeze once, someone is saying something good about you; if you sneeze twice in a row, something bad is being said; if you sneeze three times, someone is in love with you; and if you sneeze more than three times, you’re about to catch a cold. • If you’re like the average human, you have about 1,500 dreams every year.

• Even if you don’t remember it from its original air dates in the 1950s and ‘60s, you surely have heard of the iconic American situation comedy “Leave It to Beaver.” You might not realize, though,Graham that the original working title M. Campshure & Charger was “Wally and the Beaver.” The producers thought that made it sound like a show about a boy and his pet, so they changed it. ***USED CARS Thought for the Day: “A conservative is a man who believes that nothing should be done for the first time.” -- Alfred E. CARON BUTLER The 6’7”, 228-pound Caron Butler has done a lot of living in his 30 years. He has traveled from juvenile delinquent to forward for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, and this week, Tidbits goes down the road to see what has made him such a success. • As a child in Racine, Wisconsin, Caron Butler lived with his single mom and a younger brother. His mother worked two jobs to make ends meet, and the adolescent Butler was earning money raking leaves, shoveling snow and working a newspaper route. However, with two drugdealing uncles, he was lured into the world of hustling and made his first drug deal at age 11. By the time he was 15, he had already been arrested 15 times.

• Yet something good came from Butler’s time at the detention center. He discovered he loved the game of basketball. Upon his release, he joined up with Ghuari’s team and began competing in tournaments. • Butler’s rough road wasn’t over just yet. At 15, he became a young father, and went to work at the Racine Burger King, doing everything from janitorial tasks to cash register duties. • It was Ghuari who helped get Butler on the right road, arranging for a scholarship to a Maine college preparatory school. From there it was on to the University of Connecticut, where he led the Huskies to NCAA championships. At age 22, he was drafted by NBA’s Miami Heat, for whom he played from 2002 to 2004, moving on to the L.A. Lakers. It was on the anniversary of his sentencing for the drug and weapons charges that Butler signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the Washington Wizards. He was an NBA All-Star for two of his seasons with the team, before transferring to the Dallas Mavericks in 2010. • Today, Butler owns six Burger King restaurants, maintaining that it was there that he learned responsibility and professionalism. He says it’s been “one of the best business decisions he’s made.” In addition, he reaches out to young people, speaking at detention centers, urging them to “walk a straight line, no matter what it takes.” He is also noted for his many charitable contributions.

• As a young teen, Butler heard Jameel Ghuari, the executive director of the local neighborhood center, give a “Say No to Drugs” speech at his junior high school. Ghuari was starting up an inner-city basketball league and travel team and had heard of Butler’s athletic ability. Before he could enlist him as a team member, Butler, at 14, had been sent to the Racine Correctional Institution.

“Ain’t no other like a brother” goes the old saying. Tidbits brings you facts about some of the more famous male siblings. • If you’ve seen “Duck Soup,” “Horse Feathers,” “Monkey Business” or “Animal Crackers,” you’ve seen a movie starring the famous Marx Brothers: Groucho, Harpo and Chico. Although only three brothers appeared in the films, there were actually two other brothers, Gummo and Zeppo, who dropped out of the group to follow their own entertainment careers. Groucho was born Julius, Harpo was Adolph, Leonard changed his name to Chico, Milton changed to Gummo, and Zeppo was really Herbert. Harpo, portrayed as a harp-playing mute in a curly wig, was not really mute at all. Up until the 1914 vaudeville play “Home Again,” he regularly spoke, but when the playwright forgot to give him any lines, his new image was born. • You probably won’t recognize the names of the Eichelbaum brothers, Harry, Albert and Jack. The name they adopted after opening a Hollywood production company in 1919 is much more familiar. Calling themselves the Warner Brothers, these movie executives produced “The Jazz Singer” in 1927 and went on to bring us scores of other famous films. • Massachusetts brothers George, Charles and Edward Parker got into the toy and game business in 1883, and since that time, Parker Brothers has brought us more than 1,800 games, including Monopoly, Sorry, Trivial Pursuit, Clue and Aggravation. In 1934, in the midst of the Great Depression, they introduced Monopoly. It’s estimated that more than a billion people have played the popular board game. Can you name the elderly man in the tuxedo, with his cane and top hat that is seen in the game? It’s Rich Uncle Pennybags! • When the Sullivan brothers, George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1942, they stipulated that they all wanted to serve together. The Navy did not strictly enforce their policy of separating siblings, and all five were assigned to the U.S.S. Juneau. Just over 10 months later, during the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Juneau was struck by a Japanese torpedo, and all five Sullivan brothers were killed. The family, including the sole surviving child, sister Genevieve, was not notified of their fate until two months later. As a result of their deaths, the War Department’s Sole Survivor Policy was instituted to protect military personnel from combat duty if another family member has already been killed in action. •

The German-born Brothers Grimm, Jakob and Wilhelm, began publishing folk tales, legends and fairy tales in the early 1800s. Their volumes brought us hundreds of stories, such as Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and The Elves & the Shoemaker. “Good morning, Mr. Phelps” and “Good morning, Marshall Dillon” were greetings directed toward two brothers in their wellknown television roles. Peter Aurness, better known as Peter Graves, starred as Impossible Mission Force Agent Jim Phelps on TV’s “Mission Impossible” from 1967 to 1973. His brother James Aurness, who changed the spelling to Arness, was a familiar figure in the role of U.S. Marshall Matt Dillon on TV’s longrunning western “Gunsmoke.”

Quality Residential Lawn Care

Mowing, Raking, Spring Clean-up

No Contracts, Weekly or when you can’t mow. 10 Years Experience, Free Estimates

Peter Mulac 319-521-9002

As a busy, working mom, I haven’t paid much attention to my lawn over the years except to notice when it needs cutting. I usually cut it short, so I won’t have to cut it again for a while. I don’t have the greenest lawn on my block and there are a few weeds and bare spots, but it will come back, won’t it? Maybe not, as I’ve recently learned. Like other plants, lawn grasses need, air, water and food on a regular basis to survive. You can’t ignore your lawn and expect it to reward you with a healthy appearance. Regular lawn maintenance is a must and should include aeration, watering and fertilizing, not just mowing. The lawn gets a lot of abuse from children playing, pets romping and even you walking over the same space to and from the car every day. Over time the soil beneath the grass becomes compacted, unable to breath. There are two ways to aerate the soil. One method, though not the best, is the old-fashioned way of doing it by hand. If it is just a small area of grass, you can use a garden fork to puncture and aerate the ground. However, because this method of forcing the tines into the ground further compacts the soil, it is not recommended. A more effective method is to rent or buy a core aerator from a garden store or rental center. This device actually removes a plug of soil every few inches, allowing water and air to reach deep into the soil. Aerating in the spring and fall will help new seed get established and allow fertilizers to penetrate the soil.

Grasses need water to grow. It is true that some grasses go dormant in hot weather, but they don’t look very No big mower gouging your lawn nice. Always water in the morning. This gives the Climate controlled and grass time to dry, preventing fungus and disease. Water deeply. Watering to the depth of an inch will encourtraditional self-storage unitsage deep rooting systems, fostering a healthier lawn. www.greenacresstorage.net Cedar Rapids 364-7400 • Resident manager 5315 J Street SW, • Residential and commercial Just off I-380 &•Hwy 30 will sign for deliveries Office

Most homeowners make the mistake of mowing too low.

Cedar Rapids 364-7400 Three inches should be the minimum height. A good rule 5315 J Street SW of thumb to follow is to never cut more than one-third the Just off I-380 and Hwy 30

want a fertilizer high in phosphorous, such as 7-9-7.

Every lawn needs regular feeding to maintain its beauty and health. Fertilizers contain nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K) and fillers to help with distribution. During the growing season, use a fertilizer high in nitrogen, the first number in the series. For example, a bag of fertilizer may read 10-5-5. The first number is higher than the second and third, so you know this particular fertilizer is high in nitrogen. In the fall you’ll want a fertilizer with low nitrogen and higher phosphorous and potassium like 3-10-10. For a new lawn, you’ll

While a healthy lawn will be able to resist most weeds, an unhealthy lawn invites trouble. In the Midwest the worst kind of trouble is called Creeping Charlie or Creeping Jenny. This insidious weed can destroy a lawn quickly if left unattended. It reproduces faster than rabbits, by seed and by layering, and roots everywhere it touches the ground. The runners slowly slither just above the soil surface spreading like wildfire. It will climb annuals, perennials or anything else in its path, smothering them until they die from lack of light, air and moisture. Pulling the vines by hand, as soon as they are spotted, is the most judicious response. However, if even one leaf is left behind or accidentally dropped on the way to the compost pile, it will live to spread wherever it falls. Whether choosing to use pesticides or an organic method to stop the invasion of Creeping Charlie, it must be attacked with persistence and tenacity. There are several methods, besides hand pulling, for removing Creeping Charlie from your lawn. The first is to use a metal rake with tines that are very close together, raking the vines out of the grass. Repeated rakings are necessary to ensure positive results. You can also rent a power rake or dethatching machine to remove the vines. Again, it may be necessary to repeat the process before all the vines are removed. The third method is to use a boron treatment, altering the chemical balance of the soil, which will kill the weed but not the grass. The boron stays in the soil, weakening the plant and eventually starving it to death. However, because the chemical will not break down or leach from the soil for years, it could take you more than five years to actually wipe out the weed. In addition, too much boron in the soil will prevent anything from growing, including grass, while too little will not kill the weed. Therefore, it is best to contact your local agriculture extension office for advice before applying any amount of boron to the lawn. There are several chemical controls on the market today. Each needs repeated applications to completely eradicate the weed before re-seeding the soil. Ask your local garden center for their best recommendation. Pests can also wreak havoc on a lawn. In many parts of the country, moles have become a real nuisance. They tunnel through the lawn just below the surface, looking for food, especially white grubs. A white grub is actually the larvae stage of the June beetle. In large populations, grubs can be more damaging to your lawn than moles because they feed on grass roots. If you have dead patches of grass in your yard, dig up a square foot and flip the sod over. If you count more than 15 white grubs, you’ve got a serious pest problem and will likely end up with no lawn at all if left unattended. Your local garden center can recommend the latest products for killing grubs. It may take some time, however, before the moles realize the absence of grubs and move on. If you can’t wait, purchase or rent a live trap for relocating the moles to a more desirable location.

With a little extra effort, anyone can have a beautiful healthy lawn.

Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States!
