• You may remember South African runner Zola Budd who, at age 17, broke the women’s 5000 meter world record. She was especially noted for the fact that she ran barefoot. While competing at the 1984 Olympics in the 3000-meter race, Budd had three collisions with U.S. runner Mary Decker, with Decker falling, injuring her hip and withdrawing from the race. An international athletic jury found Budd innocent of any wrongdoing in the incident. 380

• Little did Ken Jennings know when he stepped onto the set of the game show “Jeopardy!” on June 2, 2004, that he would be appearing in 75 episodes and set a record for the longest winning streak on the popular program. During his tenure as champion, the Utah software engineer earned $2,520,700, plus $2,000 for second place on the day of his defeat and another $500,000 prize during the program’s Ultimate Tournament of Champions. Barbara Walters featured Jennings on her 2004 ABC News Special “The Ten Most Fascinating People of 2004.” In addition, Jennings chronicled his success in a 2006 book “Brainiac: Adventures in the Curious, Competitive, Compulsive World of Trivia Buffs.” Arizona. “ Donkeys may not, by law, sleep in bathtubs.” (But republicans can?) A lawyer, an engineer and a mathematician were called in for a test. The engineer went in first and was asked, “What is 2+2?” The engineer thought awhile and finally answered, “4.” Then the mathematician was called in and was asked the same question. With little thought he replied, “4.0″ Then the lawyer was called in, and was asked the same question. The lawyer answered even quicker than the mathematician, “What do you want it to be?”

• Who hasn’t heard Bing Crosby croon “White Christmas” in his distinctive bass-baritone voice? Born in May, 1903, Crosby was a descendant of Mayflower passenger and Pilgrim spiritual leader William Brewster. At age six, Harry Lillis Crosby became a fan of “The Bingville Bugle,” a column in the Sunday edition of Spokane, Washington’s SpokesmanReview. A 15-year-old neighbor and fellow fan began calling him Bing and the nickname stuck. Crosby had his first No. 1 hit at age 25. His success continued as 10 of 1931’s top 50 songs featured his voice, either solo or with others. He made 1,700 recordings, and 383 made the Top 30, and 41 were No. 1 on the charts. Known as an avid golfer, he was also part owner of baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates.

• At age 24, Tina Fey became a writer at NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” and by 29, she was the head writer. The next year she joined the cast, where she remained six years until 2006. She is the creator of the TV series “30 Rock” and is the winner of seven Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes. Her daughter was born in 2005, and she returned to work just one month later, saying, “NBC has me under contract. The baby and I only have a verbal agreement.” • Clint Eastwood turns 81 this May and seems to have no intention of retiring. He spent his early years in a series of jobs, including lifeguard, grocery clerk, forest firefighter and golf caddy. He was almost 30 before the turn in his career came along with the role of Rowdy Yates in television’s “Rawhide,” a character he would play for the next six years. After starring in a string of Western movies, he moved on to the “Dirty Harry” films. When Sean Connery left the role of James Bond, it was offered to Eastwood, but he declined, stating that Bond should be played by a British actor. Eastwood has had a lifelong love of music and the piano which he has composed the music for many of his films. • The family of Henry Kissinger fled the persecution of Nazi Germany in 1938 and moved to New York when he was 15. After serving in the U.S. Army for three years (where he was a Bronze Star recipient), he went on to Harvard University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1954. For the next 15 years, he was a member of Harvard’s faculty before entering the political world, serving as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford.

In England they except for Britwww.call it a crosshatch or hash, refer .com to it as the ish Telecom operators who “square key.” And some of us remember when it was just a plain ol’ number sign or a tic-tac y toe grid. However, this being the 21st centur the symbol requires an appropriately and all, Your Name ch name, which is why people “in the high-teHere know” call the # symbol an octothorpe.

a Speaking of pound signs, the British have bone to pick with us. It seems that on their American-made computer keyboards, the octothorpe is in a place where the pound-sterling sign used to be on British typewriters. , How did £ get to be the symbol for pound anyway? Before the gold standard, English money was based on a pound weight of silver (which is why they still refer to it as “sterfor weight is “libra,” so ling”). The Latin word signed and framed the Brits took a stylized letter L as their monetary symbol. By the way, libra is also why we use “lb.” as an abbreviation for the weight

The symbol was used to beginning no later than the 15th century indicate profit, loss, taxes and interest. The on idea of charging a portion per one hundred goods dates back to the Middle Ages, when a even the Roman emperor Augustus levied tax on slaves sold. At one time, the taxed amount was written out as “XX per cento,” As which was later abbreviated as “P cento.” ed time went on, different symbols were scrawl using a combination of the P and C characters to indicate “per cento.” An Italian manuscript dated 1425 shows an entry marked “per 0/00,” showing an early incarnation of the

How did the dollar sign come to represent U.S. currency? Until 1794, the Spanish dollar a. was the main coin in circulation in Americ Properly known as the peso de 8 reales, it was “p” commonly abbreviated as a lower case and “s”, with the “s” written to the right and d above the “p.” Often the two letters crosse one another, and eventually, they melded into one symbol. It is a small bone of contention among international computer geeks that the standard key boards feature the dollar sign cy. and not the symbol of their native curren of They feel that it’s just another example American domination on popular culture.
● Broad audience: Tidbits’ universal
appeal and broad reader audience means you reach every demographic target every week.
● ●
¢
The cent sign evolved after the dollar sign, and was simply designed as the letter “c” (for cent) with a vertical line through it to match the dollar sign. Today’s computer users may notice the lack of a cent sign on their keyold boards. (Some of us will remember our typewriters that featured the ¢ above the numeral six on the keyboard.) With the advent of computers, programmers needed certain to symbols that were regularly used in coding no be readily available. The cent sign was of on use to them, and was therefore replaced modern keyboards with the circumflex (^).
@
The “at” sign was so under used when it was an added to the keyboard that it was stuck in odd spot (over the “2”) and wasn’t even givin en a name. The @ symbol was only used et English-speaking countries until the Intern came along. Suddenly, the little symbol that resembled a snail was used worldwide by anyone who wanted to send email. Even though the @ is one of the most-used character keys ofon the keyboard, it still doesn’ t have an ficial name. (Suggestions are welcome, send them to us c/o Tidbits@ameritech.net.)

Strength Training Is the Real Deal A recent study at the University of Michigan has convinced me to get started at the gym again. It concluded that while muscle loss is to be expected with age, we don’t have to accept it. Researchers even pinpointed exactly what we need to do to regain lost muscle tone and strength: resistance exercises, also known as strength training. With strong muscles we can continue to climb stairs and mountains, dig in the garden and row a kayak into advanced years. With muscle loss we might experience shaky balance, falls and bone fractures -- which can lead to loss of independence. The study from UM’s Physical Activity and Exercise Intervention Research Laboratory talks about how few seniors take part in strength training, and faults previous studies for not making it crystal clear just how great the benefit is. Maybe this is what has sent me back to the gym: the researchers’ absolute certainty that resistance training can bring gains in strength and development of lean muscle mass. They were even able to specify how much muscle we lose: nearly a half pound per year after the age of 50. So, I made an appointment with a personal trainer at the gym. He was very young -- but very smart: His first question was whether my doctor had approved my exercise plan. (Answer: yes.) Then he let me set my own initial weight levels on the machines and incorporated those into an overall plan of repetitions and sets for the next six weeks, at which time we’ll review. Even though many of us stop and restart exercise programs, the main thing is that we keep trying again, right?

EDWARD P. JONES It’s hard to say where Edward P. Jones would be today if he hadn’t been fired from his job. He devoted his “down time” to writing a novel, a decision that changed his life. Tidbits gives you a glimpse into the timeline of this award-winning author. • It’s ironic that a New York Times bestselling author would be raised by a single mother who couldn’t read or write. His father, a kitchen worker, abandoned the family when Jones was a preschooler. Growing up in poverty in Washington, D.C., he read a steady stream of comic books until he was 13, when he discovered novels. A good student, Jones spent much of his time in libraries and earned a scholarship to Massachusetts’ Holy Cross College.
• Jones took a job as a proofreader and columnist for Tax Notes, a journal publication for tax professionals. On his days off, he continued to write. His collection of short stories about Washington was finally published in 1992, and “Lost in the City” was nominated for a National Book Award. But it was a full 10 years later before he began writing a novel in earnest.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:
• Following his college graduation, Jones began writing a few short stories depicting life as he knew it in the D.C. area in the 1950s and 1960s. He was living with his terminally ill mother, and following her death, he was unemployed, suffering from depression and living in one of the city’s rescue missions.

• Jones, an African-American, had a great interest in the history of slavery and began researching the subject. It especially fascinated him that there were free blacks who became slave owners during the time of the Civil War. He started a short story about it during his Tax Notes employment, but it was shelved for years, although he continued to ponder the idea. • In 2002, the staff at the tax journal was reduced, and after 19 years there, Jones was fired. He dug out the 12 pages of the slavery story he had begun and set a goal of writing five pages per day. With only a small savings account, two months’ severance pay and a plan, he started putting on paper the plot he had been pondering for a decade. It took him just twoand-a-half months to complete it. He entitled it “The Known World” and dedicated it to his late mother. • In “The Known World,” published in 2003, Jones penned the story of a former Virginia slave who purchased freedom and became the owner of 33 slaves and landowner of 50 acres. The novel was declared the winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and became one of the choices for “The Today Show’s” Book Club series. Oprah Winfrey declared it “the best book I have read in 10 years.” • Edward Jones followed up his Pulitzer winner with a second collection of short stories, which also was nominated for various awards. Overcoming the odds, he has progressed from proofreader at Tax Notes to Pulitzer winner and an instructor of fiction writing at several universities, including George Washington University and Princeton. President Obama could not state that the Mission was accomplished when discussing the end of Osama Bin Laden because George W. Bush already has that one copyrighted.

• It was Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein who made the following sage observation: “If people never did silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done.” • Much like farmers of today, ancient Egyptians who worked the land worried about a variety of animals that could destroy their crops: locusts, sparrows, mice and worms. Unlike the typical Midwesterner of today, though, they also had to worry about hippopotamuses. • The fierce Apache warrior we know today as Geronimo was not originally so named. His given name was Goyahkla, which means “one who yawns.” • We’ve all seen pictures of African women carrying heavy loads -- up to 75 pounds in some cases -- balanced securely on their heads. But you might not realize that these women can carry more, relative to body size, more efficiently than pack mules. • As the end of the school year approaches, this might be a good time to remember that it was Americans who came up with the idea of summer camp. • The name of the country of Iraq is derived from the Arabic word meaning “origin.” (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Two of Major League Baseball’s greats claim May as their birth month. Willie Mays turns 80 this month, and Yogi Berra will celebrate his 86th birthday. Let’s take a short look at each of their lives and careers. •
The professional baseball career of Willie Mays, the “Say Hey Kid,” began while he was still in high school. He started playing on Tennessee’s minor league Chattanooga ChooChoos during his summer break in 1947. After a stint in the Negro American League, he joined the New York Giants’ Class B team in 1950. He missed 266 games when he was drafted during the Korean War but was back in the game for the 1954 season. The Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958.

The Letter All of the times she changed your diaper, or wiped your tears Nursed you to health, comforted you, calmed your silly fears Quietly held her tongue as you found fault in those early years Expecting the impossible, demanding a Mom immortally strong A measure of Motherhood, took the blame for all that’s wrong Praise and love for a child, the tune not sung, a different song Hand written, several pages long, a life time of love and regret A side of her hidden, the one you always longed you had met Read and reread, every words meaning you will never forget Regrets will always linger, over the words of anger you’d cast Tough times discounted, judgments were made way too fast Tears now flow, a new appreciation for Mom, one that will last Copyright ® 2011 Robert A. • Many consider Mays to be the greatest allaround player of all time. He played in 24 AllStar games and had a lifetime batting average of .302. He ranks fourth on the list of career home runs with 660 and had 3,283 hits. During two seasons, he blasted 50 or more home runs, and he was named “Player of the Decade” for the 1960s. • One of Mays’ best friends on the Giants was right fielder Bobby Bonds. When Bobby’s son Barry was born in 1964, Mays was asked to be his godfather, and he has remained close to the younger slugger his entire life. (Bobby himself was no slouch in the home run department, having hit 332 during his career.)

• After 17 years with the Giants, Mays was traded to the New York Mets at age 41. The Giants were in financial trouble, and Mays couldn’t be guaranteed an income after he retired, whereas the Mets had offered him a coaching position upon retirement. • At his induction into the Hall of Fame in 1979, reporters asked Mays who was the best ball player he had seen over the course of his career. His reply? “I don’t mean to be bashful, but I was.” And in the words of baseball great Ted Williams, “They invented the All-Star Game for Willie Mays.” • Lawrence Peter Berra’s famous nickname Yogi has nothing to do with a bear. His friend told him he looked like a Hindu holy man, or “yogi,” because he always sat with his arms and legs crossed as he waited for his turn at bat. Berra’s parents came to America from Italy, arriving at Ellis Island in 1909 and later settling in St. Louis. • Berra lost a spot on the St. Louis Cardinals to his best friend Joe Garagiola in 1942. Instead, he played Class B ball until he entered the Navy during World War II, where he served as a Gunner’s Mate during the D-Day invasion. • Berra has been called the greatest catcher in baseball history. His career with the New York Yankees began in 1946. He played in the AllStar game 15 times, was the league’s MVP three times and appeared in 14 World Series. His lifetime batting average was .285, and he slugged 358 home runs. • Berra is noted for many memorable quotes, perhaps the most famous being, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Other wise advice was, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” His reason as to why the Yankees lost the 1960 World Series to the Pirates was, “We made too many wrong mistakes.”

In 1938 Congress enacted a flood control act. As I understand it and will point out some items here, the country should have been covered by proper flood control by now. Please understand that I have little written facts to back up what I will write here as some is simply retrieved by the Internet and some is hearsay by individuals, Steven Vogt however most seems to be rather accurate and true. In 1938 Congress passed a flood control act requesting the Army Corps of Engineers to control flooding on 3909 Center Point Rd NE navigable rivers across the country. After a few years, the Army Corps of Engineers developed a plan to accomplish Cedar Rapids this by controlling the flow of water from tributary rivers. They determined that the best approach for many of these rivers would be to construct a flood control water reservoir. Each reservoir would only be designed for flood control and not recreation. The concept was to hold back water as necessary and slow release the water when possible, and allowing the reservoir not to hold any water during the winter months. (Please note that this should be reviewed by the Army Corps of Engineers as if this is true, then the life expectancy of the current reservoirs needs to be re-examined as the original designs may not have included the pressures of year round water saturation of surrounding soils and could allow for breaches as in other man made project failures). Shortly after the Army Corps of Engineers submitted their plans, we entered World War II and funding was not approved until well after the war ended. Discussing the Coralville water reservoir, ground breaking begin in 1950 and was finished in 1959. However construction was halted during the Korean war which may have been as much as three years right in the beginning of the project. Without any urgent need to complete the project, the time to construct this project was obviously less than 10 years. By the time this and other reservoirs were completed, congress revised their plans and set minimum water levels for the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain for water recreation. Well the Army Corps of Engineers are very smart and realized that they no longer could properly control flooding of the navigable rivers. Therefore why continue to build more reservoirs if the current ones could not contain all the excess water during the summer months. The Army Corps of Engineers seemed to know that someday water would need to be released in excess of desired amounts and possible overflow past the spillways. (Speaking of spillways, as I understand it, the amount of water that went over the Coralville spillway in 2008 would only fill the reservoir by less than a quarter of its total capacity. The amount that would have been captured to prevent flooding had the reservoir been empty in the spring would have only filled the reservoir half way.) Other problems with the higher water level in the spring is regular flooding upstream also. I understand that Marengo always has had problems with spring thaws as the area is rather flat. However since 1950 they have experienced worse flooding as the river now exceeds it’s banks regularly and that they have had to install dikes along the river because of this higher water level. So people upstream of reservoirs have had to pay a high price for people who want to use the reservoir for recreation. (I myself have a boat and enjoy using it, however I would not like to think that it is at other peoples expense that I would get any pleasure by using the reservoir area to boat in). Sure, people who live along the reservoirs may see a slight property value decrease, however they will not be completely wipe out as thousands were and will again someday lose everything when the water exceeds the limits of the reservoir. People who have built or purchased a home or business can adapt to the new and originally planned wildlife area that sometimes has varying water levels. 2010, the Nashville flood should have been prevented by not allowing the reservoir there to keep water year round as they also have a flood control only reservoir. That reservoir was also not designed for recreation. We the people (Tax payers) have allowed congress to allocate money to build very expensive flood control only structures. But we the people have allowed for these flood only structures to not be properly be used. Thus causing we the people to allow our government to spend billions of dollars to rebuild what was destroyed by floods that could have been prevented. Federal tax money is being spent all the time including by some people reading this letter when all along we should have been protected by proper flood control that the Army Corps of Engineers spent tax money to devise a great plan to prevent these problems. The reservoirs were not meant to save cities like Coralville and Iowa City. But with good sound planning, that was the spin off benefit for protecting the Mississippi from flooding. However the Army Corps of Engineers would need to build additional reservoirs along hundreds of other rivers across the country in order to complete their original goal to protect rivers with barge traffic. As I understand it, the Army Corps of Engineers had planned to put a reservoir upstream of Waterloo. The Cedar River will never flood Cedar Rapids with only localized heavy rain. High waters from upstream need to be present before Cedar Rapids could ever flood. If a water reservoir was built north of Waterloo, then all communities and farm land could be protected from flooding downstream. (Considering that the reservoir was only used for flood protection or if it would be designed as a dual purpose reservoir with recreation water levels figured into the original plans). Then all of our worries and planning would be resolved and we could concentrate on other issues to better our way of life. In fact with better control of river water levels, plans for river walks and other recreation along the rivers could flourish since flooding would no longer need to be considered for these types of projects. The city of Cedar Rapids sent out a weekly flyer after the flood. I’m working from memory as I don’t have that flyer at hand now. But it listed various flood measures they are considering. The number one item they listed that would protect the city by 100% was a water reservoir. Keep in mind this was shortly after the 2008 flood and they obviously knew of the flooding that was below the Coralville water reservoir. Now they stated in the flyer that they will need to take ten years to plan what to do. However as stated above, the Coralville reservoir took less than ten years to construct and now they stated that a reservoir would take too long to build. They also stated that a reservoir would be too costly to build. I strongly disagree with this statement since the payer is the Federal Government and the Federal Government is the one who will be paying for most projects along the Cedar River. I’m sure that the cost of a single water reservoir would not exceed what both Waterloo and Cedar Rapids planners have in mind. However Cedar Rapids planners are probably only considering that they want Federal money spent in this town and not somewhere else. This would be very short sided of people as a reservoir would protect all communities, including those that will never see any separate flood control measures installed around them. Next on the flyer had several different projects, and if all were completed (Levies, flood walls, neighbourhoods let to flood etc..) they stated that they would prevent future floods by 70%. What is wrong with this concept??? Why would anyone even consider anything less than 100% protection when it is possible to achieve? Moving levies and building high flood walls will only cause flood waters to flow around them further upstream. The sheer volume of water that came through our communities during the 2008 flood was so great that it is hard to fathom the height needed to protect the communities, but yet could be held back by a reservoir. I have sent off my comments to many politicians, but only one has ever responded. He has some good ideas about establishing wet lands and other areas to temporally flood, however when a single project could be all that is needed, why spend all the time, energy and tax money to reinvent a flood plan. If anyone has comments, facts or other information they would like to share with me I would gladly appreciate it as I cannot back up much of what I have written here. But all that I have written seems to make sense and I currently stand behind it all. It is obvious that something does need to be approved and started as soon as possible. • French: Chefs know what it means to “french” a food item. It’s a verb that means to cut into thin strips, like, well, french fries. (And yes, that’s how the finger-friendly potato dish took its name.) Green beans are another item commonly prepared in this manner.

• Maltese: These tiny spaniels are easy to identify thanks to their long, silky coats. The American Kennel Club groups them with other “Toy Banquets • Meetings • Special Occasions Dogs” like Pugs and 20 Yorkshire Minutes From Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Terriers. Feline aficionados also use the term 6 Maltese to describe cats that have a similarly silky, grayblue coat. • Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. The prevalence of coffee shops throughout America is proof enough that many of us just can’t get along in the morning without a hot cup of Colombian.

• Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States!
