• 1940, during World War II, rubber in the United States was scarce and the shortage began to hamper war production efforts, especially for truck tires and boots. American industry was called upon by the government to develop a synthetic rubber compound. James Wright, an engineer working for General Electric, experimented with combining boric acid and silicone oil in a test tube. The compound “polymerized,” resulting in a bizarre substance with unusual properties. It bounced, stretched and could be broken in pieces, yet it had no practical use.

• In 1916, Frank Lloyd Wright and his son John Lloyd Wright supervised construction of the Imperial Palace Hotel in Tokyo. The hotel was assembled with an inner frame of wood to withstand earthquakes. John was inspired by this method of building, and it gave him the idea to create a line of sturdy, interlocking toy building logs sold as Lincoln Logs.

• “What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs, and makes a slinkity sound? A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing, everyone knows it’s Slinky. It’s Slinky; it’s Slinky. For fun it’s a wonderful toy. It’s Slinky; it’s Slinky. It’s fun for a girl and a boy.” This catchy advertising jingle helped sell a quite simple toy that was created in 1943 by naval engineer Richard James. He was working with tension springs, and when one of the springs fell to the ground and “walked” end over end along the floor, an idea for a toy was born. After borrowing $500, James and his wife Betty started the James Spring & Wire Company. He designed a machine that he made himself to manufacture Slinkys. They began producing and selling the coiled wire as a toy in 1945. Each one is made of 80 feet of wire, and to date, over a quarter billion Slinkys have been sold worldwide.

• In 1949, the mixture eventually made its way to a toy-shop owner who put some of the “Nutty Putty,” (as she called it) in her holiday toy catalog. It out-sold everything but Crayola® crayons. The name was later changed to Silly Putty, and it is now sold by Binney & Smith, the makers of Crayola. More than 4,500 tons of Silly Putty, enough to fill the Goodyear blimp, have been made since 1950. • Back in the 1870s, a baker named William Frisbie of Bridgeport, Connecticut, had a clever marketing idea. He put the family name in relief on the bottom of the reusable tin pans his company’s homemade pies were sold in. The idea was that every time the pan was used, the person baking would see the name Frisbie. Mr. Frisbie’s pies were sold throughout Connecticut. It was at Yale University sometime in the 1940s where students used the pie tins to play catch, whizzing them through the air.

• What we know today as the Yo-Yo is possibly the second oldest toy in the world after dolls. Ancient Greek yo-yos made of terra cotta are displayed in museums and pictured on the walls of Egyptian temples. The yo-yo is known to have been popular with Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington. In the 1920s, a Philippine immigrant named Pedro Flores came to Santa Monica and worked as a bellhop. He had grown up carving and playing with wooden yo-yos, which was a traditional pastime in the Philippines. On his coffee breaks, Flores always drew a crowd playing games with his yo-yo. He became the first person to mass-produce the toy and is responsible for the name Yo-Yo, which means “come-come” in Philippine. An entrepreneur named Donald Duncan saw the Flores toy, liked it, bought the rights from Flores in 1929, and then trademarked the name Yo-Yo. Duncan changed the string from a tied knot to the looped slip-string, which allows the user to do advanced tricks. • In 1767 London, an engraver and mapmaker named John Spilsbury created the first jigsaw puzzle as an aid in teaching students geography. He glued a map of England and Wales on a sheet of hardwood and cut around the borders of the countries using a fine-bladed saw. The jigsaw puzzle was born. The idea caught on, and people began making puzzles out of pictures as a form of entertainment. These early jigsaw puzzles did not interlock; that wasn’t possible until the invention of power tools more than a century later. In 1880, Milton Bradley made the first jigsaw puzzle for children called “The Smashed Up Locomotive.”

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

• On May 24, 1883, after 14 years and 27 deaths while being constructed, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York is opened, the largest suspension bridge ever built to that date. • On May 27, 1894, Dashiell Hammett, author of “The Maltese Falcon,” is born in Maryland. He worked as a Pinkerton detective for eight years and turned his experiences into fiction. The novel was filmed three times: once in 1931; again in 1936 under the title “Satan Met a Lady,” starring Bette Davis; and finally in 1941, starring Humphrey Bogart. • On May 26, 1927, the final and 15 millionth Model T Ford rolls out of the factory, on the official last day of production. Introduced in October 1908, the Model T -- also known as the “Tin Lizzie” -- got about 13 to 21 miles per gallon of gasoline and could travel up to 45 mph. • On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, become the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on earth. At 29,035 feet above sea level, the low-oxygen summit of Everest reaches two-thirds of the way through the air of earth’s atmosphere -- at about the cruising altitude of jet airliners. • On May 25, 1977, George Lucas’ blockbuster movie “Star Wars” opens in American theaters. With its groundbreaking special effects, “Star Wars” was soon a bona-fide pop culture phenomenon, spawning five more feature films, five TV series and an entire industry’s worth of comic books, toys and video games. • On May 28, 1983, Irene Cara’s song “Flashdance (What a Feeling)”, from the “Flashdance” movie soundtrack, goes to the top of the U.S. pop charts. The song helped propel the relatively low-budget film to the No. 3 spot on the total box-office revenue list for the year. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Detecting Alzheimer’s in Earliest Stage

Researchers are moving ahead in their quest for a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. For the first time since 1984, they’ve come out with a new set of guidelines. It used to be that there was no diagnosis of Alzheimer’s until the patient experienced complete dementia. Two years ago, researchers from around the world came together to pool all their information and to rethink how they’ve approached the care of those with Alzheimer’s, as well as learn new ways to diagnose it sooner. From those efforts, researchers have been able to identify three specific stages of the disease: preclinical (brain changes that can show up as much as 10 years in advance), mild cognitive impairment (some mental declines that the patient and others can notice) and Alzheimer’s dementia. Mild cognitive impairment doesn’t always become Alzheimer’s. The new guidelines allow for a diagnosis much earlier, before there are even symptoms, when treatment might still be effective. The earlier diagnoses can make use of physical changes (biomarkers) seen in brain scans, spinal fluids and blood proteins. This doesn’t mean they’ve found a cure for Alzheimer’s, but it does mean that researchers can use the new information to help find a cure, or at least a treatment. At this point, researchers will focus, in clinical trials, on the “preclinical” biomarkers to try to determine which are specific to the development of Alzheimer’s and how they change. By learning just how early the first steps of Alzheimer’s show up, researchers can develop drugs that will slow the progress of the disease at a much earlier point. For more information on Alzheimer’s disease and a close look at the new guidelines, go to the Alzheimer’s Association website at www.alz.org or call them at 800-272-3900. Peter Mulac 319-521-9002 

Musicians call it a sharp, the telephone company says it’s a pound sign. In England they call it a crosshatch or hash, except for British Telecom operators who refer to it as the “square key.” And some of us remember when it was just a plain ol’ number sign or a tic-tactoe grid. However, this being the 21st century and all, the symbol requires an appropriately high-tech name, which is why people “in the know” call the # symbol an octothorpe.

£

a Speaking of pound signs, the British have bone to pick with us. It seems that on their American-made computer keyboards, the octothorpe is in a place where the pound-sterling sign used to be on British typewriters. How did £ get to be the symbol for pound, anyway? Before the gold standard, English money was based on a pound weight of silver (which is why they still refer to it as “sterso ling”). The Latin word for weight is “libra,” the Brits took a stylized letter L as their monetary symbol. By the way, libra is also why we use “lb.” as an abbreviation for the weight unit “pound”.

%

to The percent sign is something we learned dread in math class, but loved to see at department store sales. The symbol was used to beginning no later than the 15th century indicate profit, loss, taxes and interest. The on idea of charging a portion per one hundred goods dates back to the Middle Ages, when a even the Roman emperor Augustus levied tax on slaves sold. At one time, the taxed amount was written out as “XX per cento,” As which was later abbreviated as “P cento.” d time went on, different symbols were scrawle using a combination of the P and C characters to indicate “per cento.” An Italian manuscript dated 1425 shows an entry marked “per 0/00,” showing an early incarnation of the modern percen t symbol. The “per” was

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

INNER HUMAN STRENGTH

Each of us has the capacity to overcome the most extreme adversity in our lives. But perhaps no one more so than the brave men and women who have served and are currently serving in our military. Four U.S. soldiers tapped into their strength reserves with help from Camp Patriot and are inspiring others with their accomplishments. • Jason Redman, Bryan Stuart, Kevin Ivory and Mike Day are four distinguished U.S. service veterans who experienced horrific battles while in combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were severely wounded but overcame the odds of survival and found new physical and emotional strength through Camp Patriot — an outdoor program for disabled veterans. The program is designed to show veterans that in spite of injuries incurred in the line of duty, with the right help, their dreams are not lost. • “The mission is to renew the dreams and visions of our disabled veterans for a meaningful future. And to create relationships for them through outdoor adventures that will promote positive, life-changing experiences. It’s kind of giving them the light at the end of the tunnel and saying, ‘Life isn’t over; we’re just living it a little differently,’” said Camp Patriot’s founder Micah Clark.

• The camp provides a range of outdoor activities for veterans with an array of disabilities at no cost to them. • Each veteran is matched by Camp Patriot staff with potential activities, and special equipment is supplied for those who need it. Camp activities range from the extreme, like climbing Mt Rainier, to more moderate activities, like flyfishing in Montana. • Redman, Stuart, Ivory and Day are participants in Camp Patriot and have all trained together to climb Mount Rainier with the help of Iron90, Camp Patriot’s official fitness training partner. “I’m just humbled to be able to do this and give back,” Iron90 co-founder Robert Vera said. “I see the sacrifice they made for not only them, but their families and the community we have. It represents a fabric of support.” • The climbers say it is not just about support, it is also about inspiration. “It shows the wounded guys, ‘Hey if I can climb Mount Rainier, there’s nothing I can’t do.’ Even bigger than that, it shows Americans if they see wounded guys doing this, they should be saying to themselves, ‘If these guys can do this, what’s stopping me from accomplishing my dreams?’” Redman said. “Doing stuff like this will boost confidence, and it gets them on the track to getting back to what their new normal is going to be,” Day said. • The four wounded veterans made it to the summit of 14,411-foot (4392.47 m) Mount Rainier on July 10, 2010, with a team of devoted guides and other volunteers. Their individual stories are of bravery and heroism in the face of insurmountable challenges, both physical and emotional. With the help of organizations like Camp Patriot and their sponsors, these men have held onto their inner strength to overcome the disabilities that have changed their lives forever.

There are approximately 3,000 to 6,000 languages spoken by humans around the world today. Language is continually evolving, and the meaning of words has changed over the centuries from one civilization to another. Here are a few examples of how words of ancient times meant something entirely different from how we use them today. • From the Greek word para, “beside,” and pherne, meaning “dowry,” the word paraphernalia has its roots in Ancient Rome. A Roman law stated that when a woman married, her dowry became the legal property of her husband. Everything else she had, called paraphernalia or “goods besides the dowry,” remained her own personal property.

• “Grotesque” was originally used to describe the artwork decorating the walls of ancient Roman grottos, which was characterized by unusual and colorful flowers, fruits and animals. Over time, grotesque art went out of style, and the word came to mean “ugly.”

• The term pedigree comes from the French words pied de grue, which means “foot of a crane.” Old world French families were adamant about tracking their family trees.

• Sarcasm comes from the Greek word asrkazein, which means “to tear the flesh.”

• The disease malaria got its name from the Italian words mala aria, meaning “bad air,” because early sufferers of the disease thought that their illness was caused by the humid and foul-smelling air found in swamps, not by the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Sturdy Buildings

From the way a genealogy chart looked on paper, small at the top and branching out at the bottom, it looked more like the webbed foot of a bird than the roots of a tree. Hence, any Frenchman who came from a family prominent enough to have a family tree was said to have pied de grue. • Originally from the Latin word monstrum, which means “warning,” the word monster also comes from ancient Rome. The Romans believed that when a deformed animal was born to a farmer’s livestock, it was an omen of bad things to come. • “Amazon” can be traced to the ancient Greeks, who had a legend about a tribe of women warriors who were so fierce that in order to draw their bows more easily, they cut off their right breasts. They called these women Amazons: A means “without,” and mazon means “breast.” • Explode is formed from the Latin ex, meaning “out,” and plaudo, meaning “clap.” In the 17th century, the word explode meant to literally clap someone off the stage after a performance.

Most homeowners are intimidated by the tangle of pipes under the sink and the inner workings of a toilet. But with a little basic knowledge, it’s possible to make minor repairs without the help of a professional plumber. Even if you have no prior plumbing experience, there are some basic things that even you can do. Keep in mind that having the right tools and a certain amount of patience will make the job easier.

Carpet • Vinyl • Ceramic Hardwood

The number one kitchen plumbing problem is a slow or leaky faucet. This is caused by mineral buildup and/or worn o-rings. Single handle faucets contain a pair of plasFREE ESTIMATES tic or ceramic disks encased in a plastic cylinder. The disks themselves cannot be reSteven Vogt moved, but the rubber o-rings can be replaced and are typically the culprit, whether 3909 Center Point Rd NE the faucet leaks at the spout or the base. By following these easy repair instructions Cedar Rapids you can be back in business before you know it. 1. Before attempting any plumbing project, turn off the water supply, then turn on the water at the sink to empty the line. 2. Plan on taking the whole faucet to the hardware store with you, so you can be sure to buy the right parts for the style of faucet you have. 3. Many of today’s manufacturers offer repair kits to match their products. If you don’t see what you need, ask. If the parts aren’t available, try a plumbing supply company. 4. Take note of the order and the position of the parts that you remove, so you can put them back together the same way. 5. Remove the handle with a hex wrench by unscrewing the setscrew. Lift the handle and housing directly beneath the handle to reveal the disk cylinder. 6. Pull out the cylinder and remove the bottom plate to expose the o-rings if they are not already visible. 7. Remove the o-rings and any mineral buildup on the plastic cylinder, especially around the o-ring holes. Replace worn o-rings with the same size of rings (available in the kit). A little silicone spray will help ease the o-rings into place. 8. Replace the entire cylinder if it is cracked; otherwise, cleaning and replacing the o-rings should do the trick. 9. When reinstalling the cylinder, it should be in the same position as it was before. 10. If the faucet is leaking at the base, check the base of the spout for a large o-ring. It will probably be worn and need to be replaced. Remember to take it with you to the store—there are hundreds of different sizes available. Clean mineral deposits; replace the o-ring and reassemble. Most Delta faucet handles rotate on a ball of either metal or plastic. The plastic balls wear out surprisingly fast, sometimes within a year, and need replacing. The metal balls last for years though the initial cost is higher. To correct this problem, follow steps 1-5 above. Then do these steps. 6. Instead of seeing the cylinder under the handle, you’ll see a succession of smaller parts in this order: cam, cam washer, ball, springs and seats. Remove these parts. 7. Clean the inside of the faucet body and ball. 8. If ball is worn, it will need to be replaced along with the seats and springs. 9. Replace all parts. 10. Leaks at the base are a sign of worn o-rings. Twist the base to remove and replace o-rings. Cartridge faucets made by Moen, Peerless and Kohler are just as easy to fix as the two styles above. Follow steps 1–5, removing the decorative top to reveal the hex screw. Then: 6. Remove the handle attachment device if present to reveal the stem of the cartridge. 7. Using pliers, you should be able to remove the long cylindrical plastic or brass cartridge. Plastic cartridges may need to be replaced to stop water from leaking at the spout. Brass cartridges may just need new o-rings. (Follow the replacement directions above.) 8. If the faucet is leaking at the base, most likely the base o-ring is worn and needs replacing. 9. Apply a thin coat of silicone before replacing the cartridge, o-rings and handle. 10. Reassemble. Anyone can fix a leaky faucet, including you. Who knows—if word gets out, your neighbors may be calling you to fix theirs.

THE

OOLONY IN N Serving fine food family style “NATIONAL” WORDS (continued): for over 75 years!

• French: Chefs know what it means to “french” a food item. It’s a verb that means to cut into thin strips, like, well, french fries. (And yes, that’s how the finger-friendly potato dish took its name.) Green beans are another item commonly prepared in this manner.

747 47th Ave. Amana (319) 622-3030 Open seven days a week, 7:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m.

• Maltese: These tiny spaniels are easy to identify thanks to their long, silky coats. The American Kennel Club groups them with other “Toy Banquets • Meetings • Special Occasions Dogs” like Pugs and 20 Yorkshire Minutes From Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Terriers. Feline aficionados also use the term 6 Maltese to describe cats that have a similarly silky, grayblue coat. • Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. The prevalence of coffee shops throughout America is proof enough that many of us just can’t get along in the morning without a hot cup of Colombian.

• Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States!
