• At age 33, J.R.R. Tolkien became a professor in the English Department at the University of Oxford. Always interested in languages, he actually invented several “artificial” languages, two of which, “Quenya” and “Sindarin,” he used in his novels. While serving with the British army during World War I, he was hospitalized with trench fever. During his confinement, he began writing fantasy tales. Years later, he published a novel he had written for his children, entitled “The Hobbit.” His publishers convinced him to write a sequel, and the result was the threevolume work, “The Lord of the Rings,” an effort that required nearly 10 years. What’s on Your Plate? The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been trying to help us eat healthier for a very long time. Back in 1943, we had “The Basic Seven” -- seven categories of food we needed to eat on a daily basis. Serving sizes weren’t included. In 1956, the USDA switched to “The Basic Four,” and in 1979 to the “HassleFree Guide to a Better Diet.” It added a new food category with fats, sweets and alcohol. In 1984, we got the “Food Wheel: A Pattern for Daily Food Choices.” This one included serving sizes. Eight years later, in 1992, the “Food Guide Pyramid” came along with those tiny pictures of food. In 2005 we got the MyPyramid Food Guidance System, which was supposed to be a simplified pyramid. Now, in an effort to keep us all eating correctly, we have “MyPlate.” The icon is cute: a plate divided into four unequal sections, with a fork on the left and a circle above the plate for “Dairy.” All this work, and I still didn’t know how much the USDA intends for me to eat. On the website www.choosemyplate.gov I clicked on the Get a Personalized Plan link and entered my age, weight, height and level of exercise. It came back with a diet plan for me, including information such as “Make at least half your grains whole grains,” “Vary your veggies” and “Focus on fruit” with specific tips on how to do that. While the “Plate” is a bit silly, as was the Pyramid, the information behind it is solid. Check the USDA website and see what it has to say. You know, of course, that an entrepreneur somewhere is busily creating MyPlate plates with the appropriate sections all outlined for us. RICK HANSEN British Columbian Rick Hansen had a dream — to represent Canada at the Olympic Games. But his life took a turn that he never could have imagined. Read on to see how Hansen triumphed over adversity by following his motto: “If you believe in a dream and have the courage to try, great things can be accomplished. Anything is possible.” • As a high school student, Hansen was a natural athlete and had excelled in five sports, winning all-star awards in each one. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman. One simple decision after a fishing trip changed his life. He and his best friend hitchhiked home, taking a ride in the back of a pickup truck. On a winding road, the driver swerved, skidded and went off the road, and the two teens were thrown out of the truck. The friend walked away from the crash, while Hansen received a spinal cord injury, and at age 15, was paralyzed from the waist down. • Hansen spent seven months in rehabilitation in Vancouver, B.C., and after high school graduation, enrolled at the University of British Columbia. There he became the first disabled student to receive a degree in physical education. It was at the university that Hansen met another disabled athlete, Terry Fox, who had lost a leg to bone cancer. Fox had an ambitious plan to run across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Fox’s cancer returned, and he was forced to halt his mission. But Hansen was so inspired by Fox’s courage, he made plans to circle the world in his wheelchair to raise money and awareness for spinal cord injuries. • Hansen’s impressive journey, dubbed the “Man in Motion World Tour,” began in March of 1985 in Vancouver. His trek covered 34 countries on four continents, a distance of more than 24,850 miles. It was 26 months before he pulled back into Vancouver, having raised $26 million for his cause. • Yet the Man in Motion tour is only one of his incredible achievements. Hansen has been the victor in 19 international wheelchair marathons. He is a wheelchair volleyball and basketball national champ and winner of six Paralympic medals. At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Hansen was selected as the torchbearer to bring the flame into the stadium.

Working out is not essential to lose fat - but it sure helps. A weight training workout boosts metabolism for the whole day and helps build lean muscle. Muscle is metabolically active - it needs fuel - and therefore helps you burn more calories all the time. Many people feel that they need to starve themselves to lose weight. This is where things get a bit confusing. Starve the body too much, and it gets the hint and slows down - you’ll feel irritable, fatigued, and begin to lose muscle as well as fat. After clawing your way through hunger pangs and dreams of food, the chances are you will binge, or start eating back how you used to. Guess what happens? The weight piles on because your body is still in “slow” mode. Fat loss is all about calorie reduction, but a calorie intake that is too low will cause problems. Proper lighting enhances a home, creating comfort and beauty. Lighting can make colors pop, set a mood, illuminate space and establish security. Most rooms in our homes use a combination of direct light for ambience and tasks and indirect lighting for an overall feeling of brightness. Direct lighting, such as an overhead downlight, illuminates without reflecting off other surfaces. It shines more brightly on the object of its direction than the surrounding area. The more concentrated the beam, the more light hits the object directly, casting dramatic shadows. A floodlight, on the other hand, spreads the light more evenly, blurring shadows and illuminating a larger area. Indirect lighting brightens a space by reflecting off other surfaces, such as ceilings and walls. A central ceiling fixture is a good example of indirect lighting, creating a general light in a room. Using direct light to create ambience through dramatic lighting is easy. Downlights placed strategically throughout a room use contrasting highlights and shadows to accent certain architectural or artistic features. Table lamps and candles provide low light with soft edges, creating an elegant romantic atmosphere. Conversely, a room washed evenly with light creates a relaxing, restful feeling. To achieve a washed effect, lighting needs to overlap from one source to the next. Multiple light sources are necessary. Lighting is used in different ways throughout the house. High-function rooms such as the kitchen require task lighting and general lighting for occupants to function effectively. Specific task areas, such as the sink, island, countertops and range, all require direct light so shadowy areas are obliterated. Undercabinet light fixtures are excellent choices for illuminating work areas. Track or recessed lighting will illuminate an island and a fluorescent strip or single downlight is perfect for over the sink. Downlights can be used throughout the space to create the general ambient lighting necessary to eliminate dark spaces between the task lights. A well-lit kitchen creates a light, airy space pleasing to most cooks. Living rooms function in a different manner than kitchens. They are used for more formal entertaining or socializing with guests, therefore different lighting is required. Living rooms usually have a visual focus whether it is a fireplace or an entertainment center. This focal point should be accented with lighting to emphasize its importance. Using track lighting is an easy and cost-effective way to make this distinc-

Bedrooms generally don’t require any specialized task lighting other than for reading or dressing. Most rooms have a central overhead fixture and lamps or scones by the bedside for reading. Closets, especially walk-in ones, do need special consideration. Make sure you follow the NEC (National Electrical Codes) when installing any additional light fixtures. Most electricians are familiar with the codes, but most homeowners are not. Bathrooms have their own requirements, depending on who is going to use them. For example, the lighting style in the master bath may be quite different from the lighting in a children’s or guest bath. All, however, need the same type of lighting, general and task. Because lights in the bathroom are used more often than those in other areas, and are the most often left on, the bulbs may require replacing more than in other areas of the house. For these reasons, consider using long-life bulbs or fluorescent. Fluorescent bulbs offer some advantages. They are less costly to operate, deliver better color range and diffuse light along a longer path. Side lighting is best for seeing oneself in the mirror. If overhead lighting is used, portions of the face will always be in shadow. Other areas of the home, such as an office, are likely to need the same type of lighting, only in different areas. Choose task lighting for workspaces and reading and indirect lighting to create overall luminosity. By selecting the right type of lighting for the right space, you can brighten your lives and the everyday tasks you face. Don’t live in a dark tunnel—turn up the intensity and open your eyes to the possibilities new lighting can expose.

“Yessir, mister, she’s my sister!” Here we present some details about some famous female siblings, past and present. • You’re probably not familiar with the names of Jayne and Joan Boyd, but more than likely, you’ve seen their faces. They were the original “Double your pleasure, double your fun” Wrigley’s gum Doublemint Twins. The girls began their Wrigley’s advertising stint in 1959 at age 21, a job they held until 1963. “People would stop and talk to us… grandmothers, small children, they all knew us,” said the twins. You can still occasionally spot the girls’ faces on some of Wrigley’s new ads, which highlight past twins. • Baby boomers might remember the names of Nan and Flossie from the girls’ 75-year history in children’s novels. These two sisters each had a twin brother — 12-year-old Nan was twins with Bert, and 6-year-old Flossie’s brother was Freddie. Together the four, known as the Bobbsey Twins, enjoyed many adventures in the fictional community of Lakeport throughout 72 volumes, making the stories the longest-running series of children’s fiction. • The tennis-playing Williams sisters have five Olympic gold medals between them — Serena with two and Venus, three. Serena leads her sister in career earnings; in fact, Serena has won more money than any woman athlete in history. The sisters were home-schooled and coached by their parents and both turned pro at age 14. • Thousands of U.S. troops were entertained during World War II by the Andrews Sisters, Laverne, Maxene and Patti. Their distinctive Dixieland swing style of music included such hits as “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” These “Wartime Sweethearts” had more than 1,800 recorded songs to their credit as well as appearances in 16 movies. • The Dionne family of Callander, Ontario, already had six children when they welcomed the world’s first living quintuplets in 1934. Five girls — Emilie, Cecile, Yvonne, Annette and Marie — weighed in at a total of 14 pounds . When the girls were just a year old, they were removed from their home by the government of Ontario when their father agreed to accept money for their appearance at the Chicago World’s Fair. They were featured in advertisements for everything from dolls to dishwashing liquid to war bonds, creating millions of dollars in revenue for the province of Ontario. The quints’ earnings were placed in a trust fund controlled by the government, which was misappropriated, leaving them in financial straits in their later years. During the 1990s, the three remaining quints were living together on $750 a month and approached the Canadian government for a settlement. In 1998, they were awarded a $4 million tax-free remuneration by Canadian officials. Emilie, who became a nun, died of an epileptic seizure at age 20, while Marie perished in 1970 and Yvonne in 2001. • Amidst gently floating bubbles and between Geritol and Aqua Velva commercials, the four Lennon sisters, Dianne, Janet, Peggy and Kathy crooned syrupy ballads to the audience of “The Lawrence Welk Show.” With their matching chiffon dresses and stiff bouffant hairdos, the California-born sisters appeared with the Champagne Music Makers from 1955 until 1967. The girls got their lucky break when Welk’s son began dating Dianne and informed his father of the girls’ potential.

24 (2 1/2-inch) graham cracker squares 3 cups (3 medium) sliced bananas 2 (4-serving) packages Jell-O sugar-free vanilla cook-and-serve pudding mix 1 1/3 cups Carnation Nonfat Dry Milk Powder 2 1/3 cups water 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 6 egg whites 1 cup Splenda Granular 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray 8-by-12-inch baking dish with butter-flavored cooking spray. Evenly arrange 12 graham cracker squares in baking dish, then 1 1/2 cups banana slices over top. 2. In large saucepan, combine pudding mixes, milk powder and water. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Spoon half of hot mixture evenly over bananas. Arrange 10 graham cracker squares evenly over hot pudding and remaining 1 1/2 cups banana slices over top. Spoon remaining hot pudding over bananas. 3. In large bowl, beat egg whites with an electric mixer on HIGH until soft peaks form. Add Splenda and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Continue beating on HIGH until stiff peaks form. Spread meringue evenly over top, sealing to edges. Crush remaining 2 graham cracker squares into fine crumbs; sprinkle evenly over meringue. 4. Bake 25 minutes or until meringue is golden. Place baking dish on wire rack; let set for 30 minutes. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Cut into 8 servings.
