The 7-foot, 1-inch-tall Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain almost didn’t make it to the NBA. As a delicate child, he nearly lost his life to pneumonia and missed an entire year of school due to the illness. After his recovery, he didn’t care for basketball, but excelled in track and field. By the time he was 10 years old, he was already 6 feet tall, and when he entered high school, he stood at 6 feet, 11 inches. Chamberlain played a year for the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958, with a $50,000 annual salary, before heading to Philadelphia with the NBA in 1959. In 1962, he set the long-standing record of scoring 100 points in a game, helping Philly triumph over the New York Knicks 169 to 147. When he retired, he had 31,419 career points.

• Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon, turns 81 this month. Before he was an astronaut, he served as a U.S. Navy pilot, flying 78 missions over Korea at the ripe old age of 21. After leaving the Navy at 22, he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in aeronautical engineering and became a test pilot. His first space mission was in 1966 on Gemini 8. The Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong’s first words upon the craft’s landing were, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” As he stood at the bottom of the ladder before his first step, he said, “I’m going to step off the LEM now.” Then came his legendary words as he set his foot on the lunar surface, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Along with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Armstrong spent 2.5 hours exploring the moon. Shortly after the mission, he announced that he would not fly in space again and became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

• The words to another patriotic song were penned by an August baby, Francis Scott Key. During the War of 1812, as British troops invaded Washington, D.C., Key, the city’s 35-year-old district attorney, stood watching the attack on Fort McHenry in the midst of the Battle of Baltimore. After the smoke from the bombarding cleared, the American flag could be seen waving above the fort. On his way back to Baltimore after the battle, he began writing a poem on the back of a letter, words which would later become “The Star-Spangled Banner.” • Terry Gene Bollea gained fame using the stage name Hulk Hogan. We know him as the star of the World Wrestling Federation, but baseball was his first love. As a high school student, he was considered the best pitcher in the Florida school system, and was being considered for the pros. He majored in business management in college, then, prior to entering the ring, spent 10 years as a professional guitarist in several bands and as a studio musician.

• If you haven’t read the work of American poet Katharine Lee Bates, you’ve certainly sung it. While visiting Colorado’s Pikes Peak in 1893, the 34-year-old professor of English at Wellesley College was so moved by the view, she wrote a poem entitled “America,” which was published two years later. A church organist and choirmaster, Samuel A. Ward, composed the music, and in 1910, it was released as “America the Beautiful.”

AUGUST BABIES (continued): • Film director M. Night Shyamalan was born Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan in India but was raised in a wealthy Philadelphia suburb and educated at a private Episcopal Academy. He was born to a physician father and a physician mother, and his wife is also a doctor, as are nine other family members who are either MDs or Ph.Ds. Noted for movies with a strange twist at the end, he makes a cameo appearance in each film. He cites “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as his own favorite film. •

Melinda French Gates met her future husband while employed by his company, Microsoft. She had earned degrees in computer science and economics from Duke University before going to work at Microsoft, where she participated in developing some of their most celebrated products, Publisher, Encarta and Expedia. Bill and Melinda Gates met in Manhattan at a Microsoft press event. She left her job behind to raise their family.

• There was much more to Jimmy Dean than pork sausage. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1940s, he became a country singer, moving into variety show television in 1957. He frequently sat in as substitute host of “The Tonight Show.” He moved to acting in the mid-1960s and appeared in the James Bond film, “Diamonds Are Forever.” He and his brother started up the sausage company in 1969, with Dean appearing in the TV commercials. They sold to the Sara Lee Corporation in the ‘80s, but Dean continued in the ads until the corporation dismissed him in 2004, claiming that the 76 year old was too old for the job. When he died in 2010, he was buried in a 9.5-foot-long, piano-shaped granite mausoleum (a $350,000 item) on his estate on the banks of the James River.

• It was 20th-century novelist, literary critic and academic C.S. Lewis, bestknown for his series “The Chronicles of Narnia,” who made the following sage observation: “We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.” • A year on the planet Neptune lasts about 165 of our Earth years. • For reasons that aren’t clear, lawmakers in the town of Devon, Conn., once saw fit to outlaw walking backward after sunset. • You don’t often associate museums with beverages, but it seems that they’re fairly popular throughout the world. For instance, museums dedicated to coffee and/or tea can be found in London, Moscow, Paris, Sao Paolo, Zurich and Kyoto, as well as in China, South Korea, Colombia and Angola. Germany has three of them. Coffee and tea must be quite popular in the Netherlands; museums dedicated to the beverages can be found in five different cities there. • Are you an ailurophile? If you’re overfond of cats, you are. • You probably know that Bill Gates lives in a palatial house near Seattle, but you might not realize quite how big it is. The sprawling home is a whopping 66,000 square feet; the property taxes alone are approximately $1 million per year. It’s not unusual to have heated floors, but the Gates’ estate has heated driveways. Beats shoveling snow, I suppose. • Need another reason to buy food that’s grown locally? Studies show that 60 percent of what we spend on food is eaten up by transportation costs. ***

Thought for the Day: “What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do.” -- John Ruskin (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Exercise Isn’t Enough Many of us exercise for an hour a few times a week and assume that takes care of all our heart needs. Not so, apparently, according to a long-term study. Researchers wanted to know the correlation, if any, between the hours spent watching television and heart disease. A second part of the study looked at the correlation between those TV hours and higher Body Mass Index (BMI) and high cholesterol. What they found is enough to make you toss away the television remote control: Sitting too long is tied to risk of obesity, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. It’s the equivalent of smoking cigarettes in a lot of ways. And even if we get regular exercise, it doesn’t counteract the effects of sitting for long hours. Cardiologist Dr. David Cohen described prolonged sitting as the body going into “storage mode.” The longer you sit, the worse the risks. For those still working at desk jobs, he suggested delivering messages down the hall instead of sending email, and in general moving as much as possible. Some of Cohen’s suggestions also can apply to those of us who don’t work outside the home: standing up when talking on the telephone, taking stairs when possible, going for walks. Being up and about is good for weight bearing on long bones and building up bone strength. Moving, even just walking, increases blood flow to limbs, brain and heart. As a start, I’m still in favor of taking the batteries out of the television remote control. There would be no idle channel surfing, skimming for programs to watch. Instead we’d consult the show listings, get up, walk across the room and change the channel by hand. And who knows, while we’re up, we might even decide not to sit back down again. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. My wife doesn't care what I do away from home, as long as I don't enjoy it.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

TEAM HOYT

As if running a marathon wasn’t difficult enough, the father/son team of Dick and Rick Hoyt has a few added challenges. But this Massachusetts duo is extraordinary, as you’ll soon learn as you read up on their legendary road. • Dick and Judy Hoyt were given disturbing news on the day their son Rick was born. The baby’s umbilical cord had tangled around his neck, blocking the flow of oxygen. This damaged his brain to the extent that it was unable to send messages to Rick’s muscles, with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Doctors advised the Hoyts to place Rick in an institution, as he would always remain in a vegetative state. However, the Hoyts were encouraged by the fact that the baby’s eyes followed them when they moved and refused to give up on him. • As Rick grew, although he was confined to a wheelchair, his mother worked with him for hours every day, teaching him the alphabet. At age 11, he received a special computer that enabled him to communicate, allowing him to attend public school. Rick received a degree in special education from Boston University at age 31 and went to work at Boston College’s computer lab, developing communication systems for the disabled. • The father/son running team got its start as a result of another’s disability. Fifteen-yearold Rick heard of a five-mile run slated to benefit a young lacrosse player paralyzed in an auto accident. Rick approached his dad about participating, and, although not a runner, 37-year-old Dick pushed his son the entire distance in his wheelchair, finishing second to last. After hearing Rick comment, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped,” Dick began running on a daily basis. When Rick was in school, Dick added a bag of cement to the wheelchair for his daily runs. • That first five-mile run was in 1977. By 2010, the pair had competed in more than 1,030 competitive events, including 68 marathons and six Ironman triathlons. The 2009 Boston Marathon marked their 1000th race and the 25th time they had completed that event. Dick Hoyt was 69 years old when he pushed Rick across the finish line! • The highlight of their athletic career came in 1992 when they spent 45 days running and biking coast to coast across the 3,735 miles of the United States. • When competing in triathlons, for the swimming portion, Dick pulls his son in a custom-designed boat with a bungee cord attached to the waist of his vest for two and a half miles. During the cycling segment of the event, Rick rides in a special seat of a custom tandem bike for 112 miles, followed by the running, during which Dick pushes Rick in his wheelchair for 26.2 miles. • In 2010, Dick’s book “Devoted: The Story of a Father’s Love for his Son” was published, chronicling their family’s efforts to overcome the obstacles of having a child with disabilities. Dick likes to emphasize the fact that even with cerebral palsy, Rick has “accomplished things that would seriously challenge most people.”

Finishing Basements and Attics: Ideas and Projects for Expanding Your Living Space from the Black & Decker Home Improvement Library. This informative paperback gives you information on how to convert unfinished living spaces of the home. Filled with good ideas, it assumes you already know construction basics. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Finishing Your Basement: Illustrated. This is an excellent instructional guide for the do-it-yourself homeowner. It provides step-by-step instructions from planning to basic electrical. Grand Finishes for Tile: Home Installation Projects 101 written by Matt Nikitas. This comprehensive guide gives the homeowner complete instructions for tile installation for walls, floors and countertops. It includes helpful hints, tricks of the trade, information on materials and tools, and special techniques. With all the home improvement books on the market today, it is hard to narrow down your list of choices. The books mentioned above are just a few. Keep in mind that there may be books better suited to your needs, so it is a good idea to visit your local bookstore and browse the aisles.

How are you doing? A lone tourist who is passing through the suburbs on the way to town by car, unfortunately experiences mechanical problems with the automobile. The car stalls and the tourist parks the car by the side of the road and waits for help. Not much later, a farmer happens to pass by with a truck full of farm animals. The farmer offers the tourist a lift to town and proceeds to explain that he is bringing his farm animals to the town market, where they will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. Well, it so happens that on the way to the town, the farmer being so engrossed in his story, unintentionally wanders into the other side of road where another vehicle is approaching in the other direction. The farmer realizes his absent mindness and attempts to avoid the possible collision with the other vehicle. He just misses the other car, but unfortunately crashes the truck into the side of the road. The tourist winds up thrown into a ditch and suffers broken ribs and a broken arm and leg and is obviously in extreme pain. The farm animals are all messed up very badly and the farmer, although remaining inside the vehicle, still suffers cuts and scrapes. The farmer gets out of the truck and looks at his farm animals. The chickens all have broken limbs and can barely move. "These chickens are all useless! Nobody will want to buy these chickens anymore!" bellows the farmer. With that, he grabs and loads his shotgun and blows away the chickens. Next, he sees the pigs and they are all lame and bleeding profusely. "These pigs are all worthless now! I'll get nothing for them!" yells the farmer. With great rage, the farmer reloads his shotgun and blows away the pigs. The farmer looks at the sheep and they all have broken limbs and their wool is all bloodied. "Worthless sheep!" screams the farmer and with that, he reloads his shotgun and blows away the sheep. Meanwhile, the injured tourist witnesses all of this carnage in great horror. The farmer then moves over to the side of the ditch and looks at the tourist. "Are you okay down there?" asked the farmer. "NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!" the tourist yelled back.

Join Cindy and her guardian angels as they sing their way through life in The Old Creamery’s production of Suds: The Rockin’ 60’s Musical Soap Opera. Created and written by Melinda Gilb, Steve Gunderson and Bryan Scott with musical and vocal arrangements by Steve Gunderson, Suds opens Aug 4 and runs through Sept. 11. Set in a Laundromat, Suds will wash away your troubles with hit after hit from the 60’s like “I Feel Good,” “Chapel of Love,” “Color My World,” “Do You Want To Know A Secret,” “Johnny Angel,” “Wishin and Hopin” and so many more. The cast of Suds consists of Molly Hammer, (The Old Creamery’s Patsy Cline), Deborah Kennedy, T.J. Besler and Jessica Bradish and is directed by Sean McCall with musical direction by Ben Bentler. • Maltese: These tiny spaniels are easy to identify thanks to their long, silky coats. The 2 American Kennel Club groups them with other “Toy Dogs” like Pugs and Yorkshire Terriers. Feline aficionados also use the term Maltese to describe cats that have a similarly silky, grayblue coat. • Colombian: This term means different things to different people, depending on how you get your “jones.” Narcotics dealers may refer to their products as Colombian, although the actual source is often unknown. Luckily, the majority of us prefer a bit of legal Colombian, as in the coffee grown in the South American nation. The prevalence of coffee shops throughout America is proof enough that many of us just can’t get along in the morning without a hot cup of Colombian. • Chinese: The generic term “chinese” now represents types of food that are very different from the meals that are (or ever were) served in China. That said, the same argument could be made about what we consider “American” food. Hamburgers? Ice cream? Hot dogs? Pizza? Our national favorites seem to have originated everywhere except in the United States! Information in the Tidbits® Paper is gathered from sources considered to be reliable, but the accuracy of all information cannot be guaranteed.

• To those in the United Kingdom, a knickerbocker glory is an ice cream sundae. Invented in the 1930s, it’s a concoction of ice cream, jelly, cream, syrup, nuts and cherry. Some add meringue, fruit and even a smidge of alcohol to their recipe. • So many different meanings for the same root word! If you seem to have a natural ability or skill for a specific task, you have a knack for it. Maybe your occupation involves buying and slaughtering old horses and selling the hides, hoofs and meat. You are known as a knacker. If you’re knackered, you’re absolutely exhausted. • If you’re popping the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints of your fingers, you’re cracking your knuckles. • Men think of knickers as short, loose-fitting pants they might wear on the golf course. If a woman shows up on the green in her knickers, she might be slightly embarrassed, since to a woman, the term means bloomer-like underwear. • Tribesmen in South Africa use a short wooden club that has a knob at the end of it. They refer to this instrument that they use for throwing and striking as a knobkerrie.

• Those folks familiar with the terms monkey’s fist, Turk’s head and Solomon Man are knot tyers. The International Guild of Knot Tyers hosts events that feature a competition for this skill. The Six Knot Challenge is a timed contest featuring the Sheet Bend, Reef Knot, Round turn and two half hitches, Bowline, Sheepshank and Clove Hitch. Tying all six in less than 15 seconds is considered excellent, but the world record holder, Clinton Bailey, has completed the task in an amazing 8.1 seconds. • Members of the warrior class during the Middle Ages in Europe were called knights, a word that takes it origins from the German word Knecht, translating “servant” or “bondsman.” Their code of law called them to “protect the weak, defenseless, helpless and fight for the general welfare of all.” Although sons of knights automatically became eligible for knighthood, even a common boy could qualify and would be sent at a young age to a castle as a page, moving on to squire, before attaining knighthood around age 20. From then, their status was permanently controlled, and no disobedience was tolerated.

• The New York Knickerbockers were a baseball team long before they were in the NBA. They were one of the first organized baseball teams, founded by one of the original developers of modern baseball, and were the first team to wear baseball uniforms. Basketball’s New York Knicks team has been around since 1946, one of only two teams remaining of the original National Basketball Association. The other team is the Boston Celtics.

Tidbits heads to the dictionary for unusual facts about words beginning with the letters kn-. • The word knickerbocker traces its origins back to the early colonists of New York. It was a common last name of many Dutch colonists settling on Manhattan Island in the 1600s, and soon, folks living in the area became known by the term. In 1809, Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” also penned the novel “Knickerbocker’s History of New York” under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker.
