This week, Tidbits cracks open the geography books to study several points across the globe that begin with the letter “T”. • Nestled on the shores of Puget Sound, with a stunning view of nearby Mount Rainier, sits Tacoma, Washington, nicknamed the “City of Destiny.” In 1792, Captain George Vancouver became the first European to see Mount Rainier, originally called Mount Tahoma, from the Native American word for “mother of waters.” Vancouver named the peak for his friend Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. In 1911, Frank Mars and his wife Ethel began making and selling a variety of butter-cream candies from their Tacoma kitchen, a venture that would eventually become the Mars Candy Company, maker of the Milky Way. Another sweet treat, almond roca, also had its beginnings in Tacoma. turn the page for more!

• Florida’s state capital Tallahassee is the 128th largest city in the United States. Its name comes from an old Muskogean Indian word translated as “old fields.” The first European explorer to arrive there was Spaniard Hernando deSoto in 1539. Tallahassee became the capital in 1824, with a log cabin as the first Capitol Building. Out of Florida’s 497 verified species of birds, 372 of them can be seen in Tallahassee. • When Taipei 101 opened in 2004, this 101-floor skyscraper grabbed the title of world’s tallest building and remained so until 2010. It’s located in Taipei City, the largest city in Taiwan and capital of the Republic of China. The city was founded in the early 1700s and developed into an important overseas trade center over the next 100 years. It’s home to several ornate temples, including the Longshan Temple, constructed in 1738. In 1945, the temple was badly damaged when it was hit by American bombers who believed the Japanese were hiding armaments inside. • On the northwest shore of Lake Ontario lies Toronto, Canada’s largest city. The city takes its name from an Iroquois word meaning “place where trees stand in the water.” Toronto ranks high on the list of the world’s “most livable cities” based on quality of living. Its low crime rate also makes it one of the safest major cities in North America. The homicide rate there is about 3.3 per 100,000 people, compared with Atlanta, Georgia at 19.7. Covering an area of 243 sq. miles (630 sq. km), Toronto has about 2.6 million residents, 49% of whom were born outside Canada. It’s obvious the city’s residents enjoy ice sports, as there are 52 outdoor ice skating rinks in the city. • Canada isn’t the only place where you’ll find Toronto. There are five U.S. states with a community by that name – Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, and South Dakota. • Five U.S. states and a Canadian province have also honored the Native American leader of the Shawnee by naming a community Tecumseh. Born in Ohio, Tecumseh (“Shooting Star” or “Panther Across the Sky”) grew up to be a key figure in the War of 1812. He is quoted with these words of wisdom: “Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.” • Back in 1950, NBC radio was home to a popular radio quiz show known as Truth or Consequences. Looking for a creative way to celebrate the program’s tenth anniversary, the host Ralph Edwards announced that he would air the program from the first American town to rename itself after the show. Hot Springs, New Mexico jumped at the chance, and on March 31

of that year, the residents voted in favor of the switch, and the very next day, Ralph Edwards and the crew flew in for the anniversary broadcast. For the next 50 years, Edwards visited the town each May for their annual fiesta. Every April 1, Truth or Consequences, or “T or C” as the locals call it, celebrates Ralph Edwards Day. • A small Japanese fishing village named Edo founded around the year 1200 has grown to the world’s most populous metropolitan area with 8,949,447 residents. Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, when it became the imperial capital. Tokyo’s entire urban area has a population of 35,623,327. The city had already reached 1,000,000 people back in the 1720s. It’s not only the most populous city in the world, it’s also the most expensive, with the highest cost of living worldwide. • Texas is home to the towns of Telephone and Telegraph. Telephone, Texas was named because the only telephone in the area was in the community’s general store. About 210 people live there these days. Telegraph’s name was based on all the telegraph poles cut to build communication lines to the U.S. Army forts just east of town. Today, it’s pretty much a ghost town, population, 3. • If you like fireworks, you’ll love the city of Tondabayashi, Japan, home to the largest annual fireworks display in the world. Several displays are held every August, with the main display consisting of 120,000 shells fired in less than an hour. • The Native Americans gave Ten Sleep, Wyoming its unusual name. This Indian rest stop was 10 days’ travel, or “10 sleeps” from Fort Laramie to the southeast and Montana’s Indian Agency to the northwest. Today this little community boasts 260 residents. • Mahatma Gandhi called Thiruvananthapuram, India, that country’s “Evergreen City.” This ancient city has been a busy trade center since 1000 B.C. It is home to the temple of Vishnu, the richest temple in the world, with its monumental items and assets valued in the $15 billion range. • Edgar Rice Burroughs was 35, nearly broke, and selling pencil sharpeners when he wrote the first Tarzan book. Beginning in 1912, Burroughs published 26 novels about our favorite jungle hero. His success allowed him to purchase a 550-acre ranch north of Los Angeles, which he appropriately named Tarzana. Within in a few years, the city had grown to surround the ranch, and Burroughs sold off part of his property for new homesites. This small community, incorporated in 1917, is still known as Tarzana, California, with a population of around 35,000. ■

For Advertising Call (248) 423-1765 IT’S VAL- DAY

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but this week Tidbits is switching the focus to other words that begin with Val-. • According to ancient Norse mythology, Valhalla is a majestic hall where the souls of heroes slain in battle are received. The Valkyries are the maidens of the god Odin who choose which soldiers will die and then escort them to the afterlife. According to legend, the helmeted Valkyries descend from the heavens in bolts of lightning wearing waist-length armor carrying brightly-shining spears. In 1870, composer Richard Wagner wrote his wellknown opera “The Valkyries,” containing the famous piece “Ride of the Valkyries,” in which the mythological creatures greet each other and sing their battle-cry. Fans of the animated Elmer Fudd might know that he frequently sings, “Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit” to this tune as he stalks Bugs Bunny. • The adventures of another mythical Norse figure are chronicled each week in the Sunday newspaper’s comics section. Artist Hal Foster introduced Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur in 1937, and the story has continued for more than 3,900 strips. Prince Valiant is a Nordic prince from the Norwegian west coast who, in sixth-century England, journeyed to

Camelot, where he became friends with Sir Gawain, Sir Tristram, and Merlin. King Arthur respected Valiant enough to dub him a Knight of the Round Table. The Prince owns a magical singing sword named Flamberge, crafted by the creator of Arthur’s powerful Excalibur. Valiant met his lady love Aleta, Queen of the Misty Isles on a Mediterranean island. He married her in a 1946 comic, and they had children in 1947, 1951, 1962, and 1982, and a grandchild in 1987. The tale was made into a movie by 20th-Century Fox in 1954, starring Robert Wagner as Valiant. • Northeastern Italy is home to a wine-producing region that is the source for one of the most famous red wines in the world, Valpolicella. Only Chianti ranks higher in total Italian wine

production. Three varietals of grapes give this dry table wine its light fragrant flavor and aroma, the Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara. • Many people who suffer from insomnia opt to use an herbal supplement taken from the root of the valerian plant. Since ancient times, this medicinal herb has been used as a remedy for sleep disorders. Even Hippocrates was aware of its sedative properties. Some followers of alternative medicine also swear by valerian’s abilities to treat nervous tension, excitability, stress, intestinal cramps, and as a muscle relaxant. • There are two major varieties of oranges, navels and Valencias. So what’s the difference? Navels are available from November through May, while Valencias are in season from February through October. Navels are the ones with the button formation on the end and are seedless. Valencias are thin-skinned with seeds, and have a very high juice content. • Most folks know that the valedictorian is the student with the highest rank in a graduating class. But how many know that a valetudinarian is a person with a weak or sickly constitution, who is always concerned about becoming a chronic invalid? Another val- word, valediction, refers to the act of bidding farewell. ■ all - yo u - c an - eat pi z z a

Know the Signs of Senior Abuse Sometimes it takes watchful eyes to keep seniors safe. Whether it’s physical, emotional or financial abuse, or any other kind, those who come in contact with seniors can look for signs that all is not well. In banking, if you spot a senior who seems distressed and who repeatedly takes large sums of money out of an account (or changes his or her routine), that senior might be a victim of abuse or a scam. (Seniors, don’t use the drive-up teller window. Go inside so staff can get to know you. Sign a new signature card every six months so your handwriting sample is current.) If you spot personality changes in a senior, the cause might be physical -- or it might be a result of abuse. Ask what’s going on. If a senior who used to dress immaculately is now wearing the same clothes for days in a row, ask. If a senior is no longer as sociable or doesn’t participate in previous activities, ask. If you spot bruises or injury, ask. In a caregiver or hospital situation, you might see lack of care or physical abuse. A

neighbor who’s had relatives move in might suddenly change his or her routines. At home, the senior might be denied food or medicine or mail. If you want more information to help seniors, go online to the National Center on Elder Abuse (www.ncea.aoa.gov) or call 1-855500-3537. Learn about the signs of abuse and what you can do when you suspect it’s taking place. Check eldercare.gov, or call 1-800-677-1116. You’ll find information on getting help for housing, in-home services, long-term care, nutrition ... and abuse. Seniors, if you think you’re being abused in any way, call the police. You don’t have to put up with abusive treatment.

Tidbits® Michigan Dust Mites Can Stir Up Allergies By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Dear Dr. Donohue: What’s all this about dust mites? Do they carry disease? How do we kill them? A baseball bat? --R.H.. Dear Dr. Donohue: About dust mites -- I am getting nowhere with them because they are practically invisible. They crawl in and out of my mouth and on my face when I am in bed. I have suffered too long with them. --P.B.. Answer: Dust mites are hardly visible; they’re smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. They don’t transmit diseases, but they can create trouble for those who are allergic to them or their waste material. The mite skeleton and waste products can provoke asthma, skin itching, eye itching, sneezing and dripping nose. Most people, however, live in blissful ignorance of the mites. They have no symptoms. Dust mites don’t bite. They feed on dead skin cells, mostly cells that have fallen off the body. They don’t enter the mouth. You really can’t tell they’re around. They like living in bedrooms -in mattresses and bedding, including blankets -upholstered furniture and carpets. They can take up life in stuffed animals. Allow only washable stuffed toys into a bedroom. They prefer a

warm, humid environment, a preference that can be used to evict them. Keep the bedroom cool and dry with a dehumidifier, an air conditioner or both. The humidity should be less than 50 percent. Mites dehydrate at that humidity. Wash all bedding weekly. Vacuum mattresses and pillows. Encase them in coverings specially made from cotton, polyester or plastic. Mites don’t disappear overnight. The battle against them has to go on for months and months. A victory isn’t total elimination, but a reduction in their population. If after all these measures a person still suffers allergic symptoms, visit an allergist for desensitization therapy. Dear Dr. Donohue: My daughter is 58 years old. For the past 10 yI read that more heart attacks occur in winter than in summer. Why? If you dress warmly, does that protect you?-- N.C. Answer: Cold weather is a stress on the body and the heart. The heart has to work harder to keep the body warm by pumping more blood than it ordinarily does. That extra effort is too much for hearts not in the best of shape.

Dressing warmly lessens the risk. Dear Dr. Donohue: Both my sister and I take Synthroid. My doctor insists that I take it first thing in the morning, before I have had anything to eat. He also has told me not to eat for 30 to 60 minutes after taking the tablet. My sister didn’t get any similar instructions. She takes hers at noon with lunch. Who’s right?-- L.C. Answer: It’s best to take Synthroid, the mostoften-prescribed thyroid hormone preparation, on an empty stomach and to wait at least 30 minutes before taking any food. I have to assume that your sister’s doctor is checking her thyroid hormone levels from time to time. If they’re OK, she’s OK and her medicine-taking is OK. If she has to increase her dose of the medicine because of low blood levels, then she should adopt your method of taking Synthroid Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475.yearly in the United States. The Lincoln MKC is going to completely separate itself from the Ford Escape with a completely different design, glass roof, pushbutton gear shifter and more technology and standard equipment. Among the innovations is the introduction of approach detection, which senses the driver’s approach to the vehicle and activates lights in front and rear as well as the door handles, while also illuminating the ground below the doors.

Robert Curran Dear Robert: I owe slightly more on my mortgage than my home is worth at this time. Can I still list it as a short sale? -- Ellen M., Livonia Answer: Ellen, there are a number of issues to consider relative to short selling your property at this time: First is that there must be a qualified, documented “hardship” in the household. Second is that you must meet the lender’s requests for information and discovery, including copies of all bank statements, income, expenses, tax returns, etc. Third is that the lender has the final word on the sales price and terms when you do find a ready, willing and able buyer, and may not agree to accept the offer as written. (This usually results in the buyer cancelling.) And finally, there is the issue of “debt forgiveness” including consequential tax implications. As I researched the current status for you, About. com explained, “Since 2007, the federal Mortgage Debt Relief Act has helped distressed homeowners who have had mortgage debt forgiven after a foreclosure, short sale, or loan modification. The law made it possible for these homeowners to exclude the forgiven debt from their calculation of taxable income, saving them thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars, in taxes that could have been owed. But U.S. lawmakers have failed to revive the Mortgage Debt Relief Act, which expired on New Year’s Day.” According to Washington Post on December 25, 2013 “At the federal level, there are three bills — two in the House and one in the Senate — that call for the law’s extension. One of the House bills enjoys strong bipartisan support, with 29 Democrats and 23 Republicans on board. The Senate bill — which would extend relief through 2015 — is sponsored by Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Dean Heller (R-Nev.). Stabenow sponsored the extension last year.” My advice? Talk to Legal, Tax and Real Estate professionals to weigh your personal options and risks before you consider entering the short sale arena. If you’d like to know how much your home is worth today, or you’re thinking about buying a new home, Century 21 Curran & Christie would like to apply for the job!

methyst is the birthstone for those born in February. The deep rich color of the gem is perhaps the reason it is considered “the emotional gem” and is often used to symbolize passion and emotion.

Jenny

Dear Jenny: My husband and I have been living in our home for almost 10 years and we love our neighborhood. Everything was fine until last year when we got new neighbors. They are a married couple in their 30’s with no children. The problem is they fight constantly. Not a day goes by when we are not bombarded by the screaming and profanities. Then, like clockwork, they “make up”. Believe it or not, these make up sessions are actually louder than the fighting. Even in the winter with all the windows closed, we can hear them. I am glad we don’t have young children in our house to worry about the swearing, let alone the sex noises. How should I handle this? --Dawn

Dear Dawn: The simplest solution to your problem is to talk to them. Communication

is the key to resolving most conflicts. It very well may be that your neighbors are unaware that their voices are carrying over into your home. They may even be a little embarrassed when they find out. Approach them in a friendly and casual manner. Treat it as a conversation rather than a confrontation. Do not start by accusing, but rather, “I don’t know if you are aware of this but...” Even if they become argumentative, keep your temper in check. You will never get this resolved by fighting. Whatever you do, don’t make threats or raise your voice. This will only turn the case back on you. If they won’t listen, just turn and leave. Talk to the other neighbors surrounding them to find out if others are being disturbed by them. This will add credibility to your claim and help diffuse the situation. If all else fails, you check with your city to find out if this constitutes disturbing the peace. Next month: Your friend’s children are little monsters? Learn how to handle it in March’s column. The story is told that, Dionysus, the Greek God of Wine was once insulted by a mortal. Enraged, he called upon vicious tigers to exact revenge on the next mortal to cross his path. This, unfortunately, happened to be the maiden Amethyst who was on her way to pay tribute to the Goddess Diana. When the Goddess saw that this poor innocent maiden was being threatened by the beasts, she turned Amethyst into a statue of pure Crystalline Quartz. So beautiful was the statue, Dionysus wept tears of rich wine over the statue. The tears stained the Quartz thus creating the poetic gem which still bears her name Amethyst. The beauty of the Amethyst has been appreciated from ancient Egypt and Israel to modern day. It is believed to promote sobriety and clarity of thought. It was also used as an antidote to poison during the Middle ages. Amethyst is the State Stone for South Carolina and is majorly found in Africa and South America. As for daily wear ,Amethyst is considered good and is a fairly low maintenance gem.

Dear Paw's Corner: My neighbor insists that giving vitamin supplements and “homeopathic” treatments to her dog “Gracie” is key to her health. I disagree that a pet needs so much extra help. Doesn’t pet food provide enough nutrients? -- Les in San Diego Dear Joe: That answer really depends on the pet and the type of food it’s eating, and partly on the disposition of the owner. Dogs are living beings just like us, and need regular feeding, exercise and medications when they’re sick. Owners naturally want their pet to be as healthy as possible, which is why the pet supplement market continues to grow. Want your dog to have a shiny coat? There’s a vitamin for that. Vitamin and mineral supplements for pets are as varied as similar supplements for adults, and

should be given after an owner has done his or her homework on the best vitamins for their pet. Veterinarians often recommend specific supplements to help pets stay healthy or recover after an illness or injury. Senior pets also frequently are given certain supplements to help with sore joints and other health problems that accompany aging. Homeopathic remedies also are popular. Many owners swear by off-the-shelf general treatments like Rescue Remedy, which helps calm anxious pets. Pet foods, while providing all-around nutrition for dogs of different sizes, increasingly have added supplements to their formulas. Owners should be aware of which specific supplements are in their pet’s food, to avoid giving too much of a particular vitamin or mineral. And of course, check with your pet’s veterinarian about whether supplements are needed, what kind and how much.
